Stopped here for lunch and was not impressed. I had a shrimp poboy. It had six shrimp and lots of lettuce. My husband ordered a grouper salad and it was lots of croutons and not much else. We would not go back.

Sam's has great fresh seafood, any way you like it. Can't go wrong here!

Sucked. Horrible. Intensely displeased. If there was one word for "I'll never go there again for as long as I live because I was incredibly disappointed after years of wanting to try that place only to be very let down", I'd use that word right here. You know... for a place being literally ACROSS THE STREET from a fish market, you'd think they could get some seafood that wasn't previously frozen AND genuine AND cheaper! Been coming to Pensacola for a lot of years and passed this placed many times and always thought I'd really like to try that place. Looks nice. Looks like where the locals go. Looks like it might be reasonable on their prices. Looks can mislead. NEVER judge a book by it's cover. So we decided to give it a shot among our MANY other choices we could have made. BAD MOVE. We walked in the joint and it was small and cozy, much like a mom and pop seafood diner one might see in Southern Louisiana, the decor was nice with the taxidermy all around, the waitstaff was polite and sat us immediately. Then we took a look at the menu and pondered over the next 5 minutes if those SKY HIGH prices were gonna be worth it, but we figured, "Hell, good food is worth the price". So we ordered. My father and I got the New York Strip and I got a side of grilled Scallops (note for later, I LOVE scallops), my step-mom and Brolaw got the stuffed grouper and my sis got fried shrimp and fries. I ordered a beer and it was cool, but not cold, so I got a sprite instead after that. When the food came out, everything LOOKED pretty good except for little things that just didn't sit right with me. Like.... why was my medium-rare New York strip a pale grayish color? Why were my scallops perfectly round and all the exact same size? I'll tell you why. Because the meat was old, it WASN'T prime and probably previously frozen and the "scallops" were probably cut stingray AND previously frozen. This place is literally ACROSS THE STREET from a fresh fish market, I remind you. My dad and I ate our steaks and he actually had to put salt on his. Made it taste a little better, he said. My sides of baked beans were ok and the cooked green beans were the only thing I actually enjoyed to it's fullest. My step-mom said her grouper was the nastiest fish she ever tasted and she loves grouper. Also, she wasn't sure there was any cheese in her cheesegrits! My poor brother in law will eat ALL of just about anything he orders and he couldn't even finish the first piece of fish. All of this stuff was probably frozen. Brother in law took maybe 3-4 bites of his fish and barely ate his sides. When the waitress came to take his plate, she just took the plate; she didn't even ask him why he didn't eat his food. I don't know about you, but in Louisiana, if you barely ate anything off your plate, the waitress is gonna want to know why, AND she's gonna want to know what that restaurant could do to please you. This left a very bad impression on all of us. The only thing that was what we would call "Good" was the hushpuppies that my sister had gotten with her fried shrimp. She said even her fries were too salty and overcooked to eat. Look, maybe this place is a hit with the locals and maybe they go there when they get tired of fresh seafood, I don't know, but this place and their high prices wouldn't last in New Orleans or anywhere near southern Louisiana, so if you're from here, don't bother. For the $34 I paid for a 14oz New York strip and six "scallops", I could have gone across the street and got a better cut of cow, at least a dozen REAL scallops and took them home and had a damn fine meal and got a six pack or two of fine brew on the way home. Lesson learned.

After reading the reviews on yelp, we were excited to go to a local seafood restaurant. We were very disappointed. The highlight was the bang shrimp appetizer. Blackened amberjack, which was a house special, was dry and overcooked. The special, which was grouper, was bland and didn't taste fresh. We spent $100 on dinner for three; not happy.

Food was expensive for what you get, lunch shrimp had no seasoning whatsoever and they did not remove the vein. I paid extra for the steamed veg and again no seasoning, i used alot of salt. The cheese grits were the best part of the meal, i doubt we will return anytime soon. The key lime pie was tasty but it looked thrown on the plate and seemed a little runny and melted to me.

Order the broiled seafood platter. Everything was wonderful: shrimp, grouper, oysters, scallops - flavorful, but not to overwhelm the seafood. Also exceptional hush puppies & Lohr chardonnay. Good coleslaw, cheesy grits, key lime pie. Two of us shared the meal. The casual decor @ exterior understate the quality of the food.

I've been to SAMs many times through the years. Prices have gone up, but the fish is fresh and prepared very well. Only three stars because some things cost extra: like having fish broiled instead of fried or having steamed veggies. Lots of locals in this place, so don't act like a tourist! :)

Onion rings home made...delish Gumbo is okay... Nothing to rave about Scallops grilled were delish My husband had the platter and he enjoyed it.

We ended up here after walking out of another restaurant. Everything here was amazing. We will be back for sure! Grouper, Scallops, Shrimp, Coleslaw, Fries, Cheese Grits....nothing disappointed at all!

***AVOID THIS RESTAURANT ***. I got 2 grouper dinners TOGO. . 21.99 apiece and then they charged me 4.50 "TOGO CHARGE", WTF, really to put my over priced food in a styrofoam box! And let's talk about the food, grouper was bland, slaw was ok and grits were far from cheese grits more like instant grits! Certainly NOT a meal worthy of $54.00! More than disappointed more like pissed! Will NEVER visit this establishment again. Oh, and to top my experience off, I called back to inquire about charges and the girl put me on hold and never came back!!!!! UNFREAKIN' believable!!!

First time experience and was a little disappointed based upon the reputation. Divey appearance on the outside however clean on the inside. Came for a late lunch and was told before I sat down they were out of mullet. I ordered a blackened shrimp po-boy with cheese grits and a cup of gumbo. The gumbo was terrible. No seafood in it at all... Claimed to be shrimp gumbo but not 1 shrimp and no rice... The rue was think and tasted like it was several days old. The shrimp po-boy was served on super thick bread.. Too thick. The shrimp were of good size but the blackening was not done right and over powered the po-boy. Not sure if the cook was new or what. The cheese grits and service was good. I doubt I will be back. Much better options available for a better price.

I'll give it 2 stars, but, that's it. If you like soft shell crabs, get those. They are your best bet. Fried scallops were overdone and oysters did not taste good. The fries weren't crispy, but that was ok with me, because you could tell they were fresh and hand cut. The slaw was sweet, with a mayo base and I enjoyed it. Onion rings are a specialty, but, I found them flavorless. Shrimp tacos started with a slice of american cheese, then lettuce and shrimp on top. WTH? Pretty pricey for what they are putting out. We won't be going back.

The greater Pensacola area is littered with restaurants that claim fresh seafood. Some do. Many don't. We came to Sam's because it was across the street from Joe's Seafood. And, at first sight, it's not appealing. The outside is uninviting and actually likely scares most off. I don't even remember seeing any windows. It looks closed. In fact, inside isn't much better. Restaurant Impossible needs to come here and bring life to the place. Even the TV's inside are from the 80s. Fortunately, we didn't judge this scene from the outside and let the cuisine do the telling. Sam's purchases much of its seafood from Joe's and other local fishermen and is much better than you'd expect considering the decor. We enjoyed every bite. In fact, it was leaps better than The Fish House (which we ate for dinner and had a price tag that was twice what Sam's charged). Sam's, meanwhile, doesn't offer any atmosphere. You come here to eat. That's it. Eating is enjoyable here, fortunately. The fresh seafood makes up for the bland decor. We tried the blackened blue crab claws and the jumbo Gulf shrimp which were very fresh. The gumbo is awesome and the amberjack salad is very good. They do a wonderful job at seafood dishes here. Come for seafood and not the scene and leave happy.

Good. Fresh. Solid. Good example of a local Pensacola seafood restaurant. Generous portion sizes. Definitely fresh. Fair prices. We'll be back...

Came for lunch hoping to grab an inexpensive bite of my favorite food, seafood! Interior is clean and welcoming and honestly the exterior doesn't do it justice but this isn't the place to stop for an inexpensive bite. At first glance of the menu I briefly thought about leaving because of all the $20+ items but I stayed for the fish tacos 10.99. They were tasty but as you may see in the pic they are so simple, even being served with chips and cup of salsa as the side. The minimalist amount of mahi mahi they could get by with and only two tacos which for 10.99 I was honestly picturing 3! The service was pretty good but I'm sad to say I probably won't be back...

Always friendly service, and it's good fresh seafood. The cheese grits are lovely, and the blackened mullet is as tasty as mullet can get!

Had the best Grouper Po-boy sandwich!! The waitress was wonderful. We will be back! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the floor was sticky!

  • Andy D.

My friend told me about Sam's, said they make the best Gumbo, he said that the place will surprise you. Well, the exterior is just like the interior. Nothing fancy, it's a locals spot, that come for reliable comfort food. There is nothing that jumps off the menu at me, so I ordered the Gumbo and a Oyster Po Boy. The Gumbo was good and I could have stayed with that, as the Po Boy, was ok, it had a large amount of oysters on it, but the bread was burned, so all I tasted was the burned bread. Service was very good and presented no issues. The interior of Sam's needs a huge revamp, it's old, feels old

Went to Joe Patty`s to take a look and spotted Sam`s across the street, first mistake. We were seated promptly but waited for service. We looked at the menu, not impressed for a place in the bad part of town, pricey and lackluster choices. I had the shrimp po boy, 6 small shrimp, all lettuce and she had the grouper sandwich, bread with little pieces. I went to the bathroom to wash the sticky off my arms, tables not cleaned, and saw that they had a specials menu, Why wasn`t I told about that. For what we got the prices were too high considering that he gets his fish from his dad across the street.. DON`T WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME AT SAM`S......

On a recent trip to Pensacola a friend of mine told me this was a "locals only" type of restaurant. Not far off the beaten path it was easy to find. The staff was awesome. I ordered a sampler with several types of seafood. I usually shudder at the idea of fried scallops and oysters because they are usually way overdone these came out perfectly cooked. I was a little put off by the vein still being in the backs of the shrimp. It's definitely worth a stop in if you're in town.

Two visits in the last four months with out of town guests have earned Sam's a 'Go To" rating. We first visited Sam's several years ago and came away unimpressed. So when our guests suggested Sam's we were apprehensive but it's location was the most convenient. Everyone on both occasions walked away happy. The service was prompt, the food came within a reasonable time and the prices, while not cheap, were commensurate with the portions and quality. As for the food, the gumbo was as good as advertised, the seafood platter overflowing, the scallops and shrimp dinners were fresh and right out of the fryer. Our northern friends were somewhat surprised everything came fried, but Sam will broil by request. They also found the green beans to be on the spicy side. No problem for me, tasted like home cooking. The baked potatoes were very warm with the butter cup set inside to melt. Cheese grits and cole slaw were also very good. Finally, on both occasions were saw Frank Patti having dinner there, so what could be a better endorsement!

This place was recommended to us, and we were wanting some where fun to eat for lunch. My husband and I had the blackended grouper sandwich and it was decent but it wasn't anything special. It definitely wasn't worth the price we paid. My sister and niece had one of the poboys and the crabcakes. The crabcake was small, and it wasn't worth it either. The poboy was rather large though, and my sister said it was pretty awesome. I wouldn't go back, the service was pretty terrible. Our waitress was rather rude, and like I said just not worth the price. I'm willing to pay for food that is obviously going to be more closer to a tourist area, but I could have went somewhere else and been more satisfied.

Okay, so yes, I walked into this restaurant and was immediately like, they serve food here? It's not the most impressive location i've been inside, then looking at the prices I was even more confused. These menu's cannot be right? Who charges this much when the place looks like this? I was with a Pensacola native who insisted that we eat here and I kept looking at her like, I hope you're right. For food I ordered the Cheese filled Jalapeno Poppers, a salad and the Grouper with a baked potato. Everything was fried and everything was DELICIOUS! I feel like I don't eat enough fish on a regular basis but I was so impressed with my food it almost made me forget how crazy everything looked around me. My companions ordered Crab Claws and had Stuffed Shrimp and Lobster. I cannot comment on their dishes, but we did not really say much while the food was out. I was not thrilled with our waitress, she did not provide bad service but she was not very lively or particulary friendly. The food is delicious so it is well worth coming here but if you're trying to impress someone I would try somewhere else unless they don't care what a place looks like because the food is very impressive.

We went there because I heard that they might have collard green ice cream for dessert. They didn't. That's ok though because their fried shrimp, coke slaw and cheese grits were nothing less that superb!

This place is not much to look at, but WOW the food is great!!! The crab claws are wonderful, the shrimp was lightly fried and fresh -hot - and delicious! The salad was crisp and fresh. My hubby had the mullet, because he loves strong fish, with cheese grits. The whole meal was perfect !

Great little seafood dive! Ambiance: Laid back and dive-y. My wife and I attended on a Saturday evening. There was a decent crowd and parking was not an issue. The inside is decked with stained wood and alcohol neon signs. The crowd seems like a local crowd and ranged from flip flops and tees to jeans and polo shirts. Service: Outstanding. Waitress was very polite, but was not necessarily as "dolled up" and professional looking as I like to see when paying $16.00 for a dish. Food: I ordered the blackened Amber Jack for $15.99. There was too much blackening sauce left over on the fish and it kind of stole the flavor, but it still had great flavor and was maybe cooked a tad too long. My wife ordered the blacked scallops and they were AMAZING! They were the light order and only around $9.99, I quickly wished I had ordered them instead after tasting hers. The cheese grits were good but will need salt. The Cole Slaw, was some of the best I've had in my live TRULY DELICIOUS! Recommend: Gumbo and drink for starters, then the blackened scallops, with slaw. Summary: I will absolutely go back to Sam's on my next journey to P-Cola.

Best Seafood In Pensacola !!! We are a family group aged 5-98. Some of us live in Pcola, others used to live in Pcola. The younger generation lives in New Orleans and San Francisco. We love to eat out and Have tried many Pensacola seafood restaurants, but we all declare that Sam's is our favorite for seafood. Always fresh and, as we compare the same dishes in the various restaurants, Sam's wins. It is authentic, gets a local crowd, and is comfortable, although certainly (thank goodness) not fancy. On Saturday we were a group of 14, we were welcomed, served their delicious food by pleasant, efficient waitresses. The owner and/or his son are usually there to make sure all is done well. Today we were there for lunch. Again, yummy grouper, crab claws, shrimp, hamburger (? Only a local would eat hamburger instead of seafood), gumbo, even their French Fries are great. Sam's Seafood Shack!!!!!!

I could not ask for better service or fish. We had the mullet, triggerfish, and tuna. No disappointments at all. I will be back for sure. I had read the previous reviews and was skeptical but I don't have anything bad to say.

The staff was super nice but the shrimp tacos were gross. A pile of cheese, Cole slaw and 3 shrimp per taco. Served along side some inedible chips and salsa. All this for 11.99 around 2$ per shrimp. Wouldn't have been so bad if the shrimp had been fresh, but they were either frozen or old. I shouldn't have eaten both tacos but I was hungry so I crammed them down. I feel sick to my stomach now. This was my first and last visit to Sam's. Maybe I just chose poorly cause other folks around me seemed to enjoy their meals. Aside from the tacos everything else about the place was nice and clean.

We found this on my IPhone when looking for a seafood place. When you first drive up you'd think it is a bar but it is a restaurant with a small bar inside, nothing fancy. The service was very fast and good. The food was great and reasonably priced, we had blackened amberjack. We would definitely eat here again.

You will see my review for Joe Patty's across the street (*****). I will unfortunately never come back to his son Sam's place ever again. While the service was AMAZING and the food was okay (oysters, yum, fish, blah), I had the most racists and horrifying experience in my 46 years of living on earth while in the men's restroom with another patron. No need to go into it here, but, needless to say, that one experience, and the gentleman offender asking me if "I was a friend of Sam's...", will leave me forever with a bad/sour/awful taste in my mouth. Best of luck Sam's.

This is actually my favorite place to eat lunch. The food is crazy fresh and the waitstaff is always friendly, efficient and knowledgeable about the food. The decor is exactly what you would expect from a beach seafood diner. The prices are incredibly affordable too!

My husband and I decided to stop in for lunch and I am glad we did. I ordered the deviled crab, cheese grits, slaw and hush puppies. My husband ordered the large boiled shrimp, fries, slaw and hush puppies. The service was great and the food was great with only one exception. The hush puppies were very small and tasteless. Nevertheless, we will definitely be coming back the next time we are in Pensacola.

Sometimes when you're at the beach, you just want some fried seafood to satisfy that craving. Sam's Seafood Restaurant will certainly satisfy any craving you may have... Our meal started with a dozen fresh East Bay oysters -- these guys were HUGE and ridiculously tasty. We were able to mix up our own cocktail sauce as we were provided the "mixins" to do it tableside -- I like doing this because I can dictate how spicy it is. I had a fried plate for my meal, literally a fried plate -- scallops, shrimp, french fries, and hushpuppies. See? I told you. All fried and ALL good. Had a side of slaw as well -- slightly on the sweet side as I prefer a more vinegar-y based slaw, but eh minor complaint. Sam's has a full bar as well and I decided to have a vodka soda with my meal. The drink came with a homegrown lime, which just a small sliver produced more juice than some of the crappy limes you purchase at Kroger and end up costing $1 a piece. It honestly made the drink. SUPER casual place, nice staff, and I'd recommend this place with no reservations whenever you're in the Pensacola area.

Great place to have a private party with family and friends! Management and staff were excellent and ensured my husband's 29th birthday / deployment party was flawless and done to perfection! Thanks Sam and Sam Jr.!

  • Jack B.

Although the fried shrimp were OK, the place has very little appeal considering the menu prices. They upcharge for broiled or grilled menu items (instead of fried) which is complete and utter BS. No wonder 98% of the staff and customers were obese. A better business model should instead discount the healthier options so that their regulars live a little longer......

Great hole-in-the-wall joint! The grouper and steaks were fantastic. The ranch dressing was amazing.
