The decor left a lot to be desired but the food was pretty tasty and authentic. I got two tacos and rice with beans. They also gave us complimentary chips and salsa which was appreciated. I was visiting from Gainesville so it wasn't super convenient but I would try it again if I was ever in the area.

I was glad to see this place open recently. I decided to try them out. I was pleasantly surprised. The food is good, more like home made. I got the combo plate of 2 Tacos. Rice beans chips salsa & a drink for $6.99. Prices are reasonable and the people are nice. It's a family owned business & they fixed up a old building pretty nice. It's got a sort of down home casual feel. I recommend them if you want more authentic Mexican food. They strive to achieve that. And I see they are pretty popular with the locals. The decor is from Mexico. It's a nice little place with good food & service. :-)

OK, I admit it. Based on creds no stronger than a couple of vacations in rural Mexico and two years' living in San Antonio, Spouse and I have become Mexican food snobs. Spare us your fancy decor and your mariachis (tho' a margarita or two won't be dissed). Our favorite places are divey, preferably where we are among a handful of Anglos in the room. Well, we didn't find that at Cilantro - yes, its decor is informal, the servers are friendly, but everyone except the owner/chef was definitely Anglo. We were there today on the basis of Yelp -- and boy were we pleased. The menu is small, but everything - everything - is totally fresh. Their barbacoa was excellent, and the fish tacos were to die for. Beautifully marinated fish, which the chef recommends you try with their absolutely fresh pico de gallo. (She says they make it at least 2-3 times a day.) The beans are like what I know as charro beans, none of those lardy refritos . . . and the rice was your basic, properly cooked Mexican rice, golden and yummy. Unless you specify otherwise, everything comes on homemade corn tortillas - and our only issue is that they are so fresh they crumble when you try to eat them. We ordered the combo plate - two tacos plus rice and beans, $7.95 -- and had our tacos with the works - cheese, tomatoes, cilantro, onion -- flavors blended beautifully. Oh yes, you do have to ask (and pay a bit extra) if you want chips and salsa. The salsas are all home made - green comes gentle or fire-roasted, and the red is fire-roasted fire. The chips are from a grocery bag, not really worth it - I'd rather have a plate of tortillas to dip. Our only quibble: Cilantro Taco would do well to take a page from some of the divey-er places we've frequented, and double up on the tortillas for the tacos - we'll ask for this the next time. Because yes, admitted Mexican food snobs that we are, we're already planning when we can take the 25-minute drive to Newberry again. There are other things on that menu I can't wait to try.

Very nice employees. Food was delicious. The Barbacoa was the best dish served. The employees were extremely friendly, warm and welcoming. The home-like environment was one that will leave a lasting memory and will definitely bring us back!

So I've been to Cilantro Tacos twice now and each time the food was delicious, however the service sucks. No one hardly ever comes to check up on you and you have to get up to ask for a refill. Seriously? Obviously the employees have never been in food business before. They slack and make excuses for their bad service or for taking forever to bring you your salsa. In addition to bad service, they always seem to have run out of something I wanted. The food was great but I end up leaving pissed off. Next time I will get take-out.

So what does it take to drop a 4 star review to a 1 star? A truly terrible experience. Tonight I dined there for dinner with my wife and son. While we were eating the tortillas and queso a waiter wearing flip flops, sunglasses, and athletic shorts brought us more chips from the kitchen. We can hear the table beside of complaining of the lack of appropriate attire in the kitchen staff too. A minute later I hear a waitress telling him those chips had been intended for another table. He promptly grabs them off of our table and takes them to another family. I'm sure they were thrilled to have chips off of our table. A few minutes later they bring out my son's meal which clearly has hair stuck in the cheese. We sent it back to the kitchen and tried to decide whether to stay. A few minutes later my wife's meal is brought out. No silverware though. I had to get up and go get it myself. My son's replacement meal comes out a few minutes later. I still have to wait another few minutes before my taco combo comes out. I take a bite and nearly break a tooth on a piece of bone the size of a grape in my taco. When I advise the waiter, he did not look at all surprised, and explained to me that they cook meat on the bone and then cut it off so that must be why. As if that made it ok. While telling us that we didn't need to pay was a nice gesture, it in no way makes up for the experience. Previous Reveiew: What it lacks in decor it makes up for in taste. Cilantro Taco may appear ordinary, but their authentic mexican food is anything but. I suggest the soft tacos (authentic style). There are many meat choices but the shrimp and the carnitas are particularly outstanding. I'm not a fan of their chips. They are obviously not made fresh, which is disappointing considering how good the salsa and entrees are. Service is normally solid here. They go out of their way to accomodate children. They also have become popular for call ahead take out.

Cilantro Taco brings authentic mexican food to Newberry, FL. I order the El Pastor soft tacos with onions, cilantro and cheese. They are incredible! Their homemade red sauce has an excellent bite and flavorful taste. Everything is made fresh, so you may have to wait a little longer, but well worth it.

My friends and I make a trip out here once a month because their food is so good. The owners are incredibly nice and try their best to make sure you've enjoyed your food.

The Carnitas are PERFECT. I also enjoyed the steak tacos. I suggest getting them "authentic" or "street" style, which means cilantro, onion, maybe pico de gallo. Good salsa, great tacos, good value, and family owned.

  • Kelly G.

Every time I come here, I have amazing service and spectacular authentic fish tacos. The hot sauce is the perfect amount of spicy. Wish there was a Gainesville (or any city I visit often) location. My meat eating friends are in love with the the Barbacoa and El Pastor tacos. Highly recommended!!!!

Totally cool little family taco joint. The food is good and surprisingly filling. The staff was really friendly too. I've got at least 4 other menu items I need to go back and try. Baha Cali inspired flavors cal to me.

This food at Cilantro Tacos is amazing. They make fresh food NOT fast food as everything is made to order. The trip is worth it from GVL and you must try the barbacoa tacos.

Thank you Cilantro Taco! Newberry is/was in desperate need of more GREAT restaurants and you fit the bill. In the 1+ year you've been open, I've eaten there at least a dozen+ times. I have never been disappointed in the food. I've made sure to try all the meat options and they are ALL great. I really love the barbacoa. Freshly made every day! The service is awesome. Always met with a friendly face. Thanks for choosing Newberry!

We visit Gainesville often and while they have no shortage of Mexican options, this place is actually authentic and has the freshest ingredients. Everything is made to order. We tried the chicken, steak and fish tacos and the taco salad with chicken. Since it was our first time, they set up a salsa bar to try. It's reminiscent of the mom and pop taco shops you find in San Diego. You can't go wrong with this place! It's family run and everyone is really friendly! Bonus is they have real authentic coca cola without the high fructose corn syrup in the glass bottles!

Just stopped by to pick up dinner on the way home, & a man came into the restaurant with a yellow order slip as we were dining. He was clearly coming fresh from working outdoors. The mother/wife/owner of the restaurant came rushing out to greet him saying, "Oh thank you, thank you, we were just about to have to come for these!" He replied with, "It's my pleasure ma'am, I thought it'd help ya out a bit." Even though his shirt was dirty she gave him a big hug & thanked him again for delivering whatever it was himself. She walked with him outside &, I could see out the window beside me, the man lifting a crate of tomatoes off the back of an old pickup truck, & carrying it towards the back door as the woman guided & laughed & chatted with him, the man picking out a couple very green leaves. After a quick conversation between the brother & sister of the Cilantro Taco family, I learned that this man was a local farmer who sells them freshly picked tomatoes & other veggies every week. So not only does this place make the most delicious food I've ever experienced, but they use fresh & local veggies? I think I'm going to start a fan club. Side note: the woman was wearing a different colored apron when she came back out to the front. I was kinda glad to see that.

Such nice people! Gave us salsa taste test with specially made tea, the tacos were so good! The shrimp tacos were the best, closely followed by the fish tacos. Much recommended.

We found this lil hole in the wall while driving thru this small town. We were promptly greeted & given chips & salsa on the house since it was our first time there. (I think chips & salsa are $1.99) the brought us 3 different salsas & the green was our fav! Reasonable prices & a very friendly atmosphere. We'll back!

A small family owned restaurant present the best tacos in town! For tacos, I think three factors matters: freshness, flavor, texture(of the protein). Cilantro Taco nail it in all three factors. The only thing I want to complaint is: I have to drive over half an hour to get here! Otherwise I would love to eat there five days a week!

  • Isabel W.

This place is a little out of the way but if I'm in the area, I have to stop by! It's definitely a hole in the wall, but the food is made fresh. The chips come with two salsas. One is the cool, refreshing one with actual chunks of avocado and the other is more chipotle flavored with a kick of spice at the end. Sometimes they offer a 3 for $5 deal so ask just in case! Today, I got the barbacoa and carnita tacos and it was amazing. Both the meats are very tender, juicy, and full of flavor (savory with a hint of sweetness). I always ask for them authentic style which comes with onions, cilantro and lime. You can get them regular with cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes but if you're going to eat here I definitely recommend trying them authentic. It really enhances the flavor of the meat. definitely stop by :)

  • Joe R.

In no way is this place on the level of La Tienda. To start with the chips are out of a bag and not very good. The food is good but nothing great. The guac was ok but lacked flavor. The one thing that was very good was the rice. The staff was nice and explained how the rice was from scratch. Wish the chips were as well.

I don't make it out to Newberry too often to eat, but a friend recently recommended that I make a trip to try Cilantro Taco. I found the drive well worth it as their tacos were some of the best I've had around here. Fresh is the operative word when it comes to describing their tacos. You can clearly tell that they use high quality fresh produce, and it's always a good sign to me when a restaurant uses corn tortillas by default. The proteins (I recommend steak, my wife recommends fish) are well seasoned and finish off this great taco experience with flying colors. At first I was skeptical because we started off our meal with chips that tasted like they came out of the bag. The salsa with the chips tasted fresh but lacked much flavor (the hot salsa is a little better than their mild), and the amount of salsa they give you is so little it feels like they're rationing it. I hope they take a page out of La Pasadita's book and eventually go to made-to-order chips which patrons can pay for. You want the first bite of food you serve guests to knock them off their feet. Luckily their tacos easily make up for this. I like hole-in-the-wall places, and this is definitely one. Come for the food, not the ambiance. The staff has been very inviting and friendly, and the food comes out quick. You can tell this is a family affair, which adds to the appeal of Cilantro Taco. While eating here I feel their passion to serve high quality food and make sure guests are happy. I get the impression that they are easing into the business, and with great tacos as their cornerstone, I feel like they'll do quite well.

I absolutely love this place! The staff is so friendly and welcoming. I always get the burrito grande carnitas! I never really got into carnitas meat with my mexican food until I came here. This place never disappoints with food. The burritos are very filling to say the least. I usually get take out when I would go there and it was always done in 15 min or less. I loved this place so much I would go once a week at least to get my burrito fix. When I come home again to visit I'll be stopping in for my carnitas burrito like old times :)
