When I pulled up to this place, I felt like I was visiting one of those country side-of-the-road / off the beaten path places in South Carolina. Or maybe walking back in time to the TV show Sanford & Son. But then I ate the food and...WOW! That has to be some of the best pulled pork I've ever had. Other sides really tasty too. I need to try some of their other meats, but each time I go I just HAVE to get more of that pork sandwich! I first met Gary at an event where he was catering for 500 people and I still remember how good the food was. He and his staff are very friendly too. They have managed to recreate that Southern, country BBQ experience which is sort of rare nowadays. Don't mind the appearance of the place - it's part of the charm. One thought: if the restaurant bothers you, use them for catering. All that insane food at your event = awesome. Give G's a try!

Gary does it right. There is nothing that is bad here. I eat here at least twice a month. I've had the oppotunity to eat BBQ all over the south. This place is one of the best. I had them cater a larger party of 40 people. We had the pork, brisket, BBQ beans, mac n cheese, and slaw. Everyone, and I mean everyone, loved it! Prices are perfect with the portions. Heads up, this place is small and sometimes runs out of certain foods later in the day.

It was pretty good. Other reviewers are correct, don't wait until the last hour they are open if you want brisket. Sold out when I visited at 7pm on a Friday. Not a ton of options if you have picky children with you. BBQ chicken, ribs, pork or brisket. The BBQ beans were delicious. Banana pudding, just OK. The pulled pork sandwich was my main dish. It was good, but not so awe inspiring that I would likely travel down from O.P. just to get it. Seating is limited, but there were seats outside as well. I ate some of my kids mac and cheese, it had a nice crusty part to it. It not really very cheesy and not a show stopper either though. Based on the other yelp reviews I was hoping for more.

Great BBQ! Brisket and pulled pork are awesome. Has 3 different house sauces to top if you like sauce, but meat is so moist that it doesn't need it. Real country style side like Mac & Cheese, potato salad, greens and of course BBQ beans. Don't forget to save room for some banana pudding. Wash it all down with a sweet tea. Support this small, locally owned business as his BBQ tops any chain restaurant's Q by far!

I've eaten here 3 or 4 times and I can't seem to get a decent meal. The ribs are terrible, dried out and no meat (2 times). The pork sandwich is ok but very small. And the bbq is sweet baby rays? Some days you can get brisket and others you cant. Same thing with Mac n cheeese...wierd. I wish the food was better here, their nice people but I'm done trying.

I love this place. The food is great and the owners are super nice! It's a little small inside and they only do brisket on Wed and Fri during the week, not sure about the weekends.

I've eaten BBQ all over the US at some of the most famous bbq restaurants and many dives that are not so famous. G's BBQ ranks up there with the best of 'em. You won't find better BBQ in Jacksonville, nothing even close! I'd eat there 3 meals a day if they were open. Highly recommend!!

I really enjoy G's bbq. Gary is super nice and friendly. Everyone that works here is very friendly! The place is small but it almost feels like I'm at a family members house eating. The last time we were there he even had a smoker outside cooking and there were patrons and friends drinking tea and talking to Gary as he cooked. I have not noticed that in the past visits but they were still as good as this one! And when they run out of something, that's it, of that one thing, for the day. G's does serve their food on styrofoam plates with plastic forks. This is not a draw back for me. The food is great! We have tried almost everything on the menu and I have enjoyed it all. The sweet tea is a must! I really enjoy the chicken most and my son loves the ribs and brisket. They run out of brisket quick though. I highly recommend this place! Also, I think they make their own sauces. They are awesome!

Visited for the first time on Friday - yes it is a little hole in the wall and yes, it has got to be the best BBQ I've had around here. We did take-out - pulled pork and ribs. Pork was smokey and tender and the ribs - the ribs! Fall off the bone heaven! So glad we found it and can't wait to go back.

Best BBQ in North Florida and he has the tournament plaques on the wall to prove it. I've had everything and it's all delicious and reasonably priced. My favorite is the simple yet amazingly scrumptious pulled pork sandwich. The place is small and unorthodox looking, but don't let it scare you the staff is very friendly and helpful.

Wow!. OK, I have eaten BBQ all over the state of Florida, mostly bad barbecue. And the Jacksonville area for the most part is a vast wasteland of BBQ joints. All I can say is that G's has the best pork I have had this side of Birmingham, I had almost given up hope. The pork was nice and moist with a good smokey flavor, and was properly rough chopped, some of it seemed pulled. The sides of collards and bbq beans were filled with more pork and the beans were outstanding. Likewise, 3 homemade sauces were pretty good, one mustard sauce was terrific and I don't like mustard BBQ sauce, but it was the inspiration on learning how to make my own so thanks. Served with a corn dodger that was great for dipping the sauce. Just a wonderful experience, with great service and friendly staff....in fact, I ordered at the counter and my plate was ready before I could pay the tab! This place is tiny, about 5 small tables inside and another 5 tables outside. Several people came in for takeout while I was there. Big selection of hot sauces too. Now, for what I didn't like. 1) plastic plates with those little portion control compartments 2) small and cheap plastic forks, and 3) the buns for the pork sandwich is just too much. All I could taste was bread, so I chucked the bun. They really need to correct this. I am baffled as to why nobody in the whole state knows how to make a friggin BBQ Sandwich? 4) the Collards, I may try these again but they were awful. It was about 10 bucks for a sandwich and 2 sides and a drink. I plan to make this a weekly trip. It was an 8 mile drive out to Middleburg but it was well worth it. My highest recommendation, the BBQ here is just fantastic. Edit: 2nd visit - Had the 1/2 chicken dinner and it was excellent. Very moist and tender and paired well with the mustard sauce. BUT, next time I go back I'm going to pass on the Collard Greens, they are nothing but mush. They ought to take these off the menu, they really are terrible. OK, thats it for the cons, the barbecue is the star here anyway. Cheers.

I rarely give out 5 star reviews so do not take this 4 star rating lightly. Before we recently moved here from Minneapolis I lived in Des Moines, IA. Before that I spent 15 years in Kansas City. SO I KNOW GOOD BBQ -- and well, look at me -- I like to eat. The burnt ends here would stand up to any I had in KC. Keep in mind BBQ novices, these chunk/cubes of heaven are not really "burned"...so don't be afraid to order them. The ribs were fall off the bone tender. And neither needed ANY sauce. But it seems like on the days they have the homemade mac & cheese, you need to get there early! I missed out on that one -- but I'll DEFINITELY be back. Oh, and the earlier reviewer was right, if you're looking for some white tablecloth, upscale BBQ in a sit down restaurant type experience -- keep looking. But if you want some REALLY GOOD slow-smoked BBQ served by friendly folks? This is the place! And in my experience the best BBQ places were usually small "BBQ joints" in old buildings...like "LC's BBQ in KC". Park in the dirt, or under a tree, get there early because when they're out that day -- they're out...and enjoy some great BBQ basics.

This place is country BBQ. It's not the place you enter wearing your Google Glasses, little Tyler and Cassidy in the double stroller in tow, American Express shoved in the guy's face, asking for "gluten-free" cornbread and for lo-fat kale, not collards and PLEASE(!) hold the salt pork! This is "Southren" BBQ all the way and that is why it's so good! You park in the yard, under some trees. There's not really a parking lot proper so to speak of, so prepare to have the Range Rover washed after having visited here. You enter through a creaky door where the counterman (most likely a co-owner and one of the pit-masters) will personally take your order. As for the BBQ it's pretty good. It is very tender and fall-off-the-bone, especially the ribs but I've had BBQ cooked all sorts of ways before and this BBQ kind of reminds me of the stuff I've had that's been pressure cooked (or God forbid, boiled???) prior to being BBQed. Tastes good, but I'm wondering... Venue is fun, North FL crackerbox and the people who work there are all delightfully friendly. Same goes for the clientele but if you're expecting San Marco hipsters, you're gonna be sadly disappointed. Everyone who eats here is about as real as people get! Just don't be a douchebag while here and you'll fit in fine. You'll also get to enjoy some very tasty BBQ, too! I will definitely be coming back for more!

Like all the others posts this is a small mom & pop joint. The only thing I cared about is how the bbq tasted. I've been here twice and ordered the brisket the first time and ribs the second time. I'm a backyard bbqer myself and have been at it for a few years. I was excited to see a bbq joint other than the chains close to my house. The brisket was pretty good, almost like the brisket I had in Texas. I've had most of their sides and haven't had a bad one yet. Now we get to the thing that let me down about this place. The ribs, small portion (3 bones) lunch portion. When I got home and opened the box up I was dissappointed. Very small ribs that looked overcooked and they were. Dried out and tough. Ribs are one of the easiest meats to cook and they screwed it up. I don't recommend the ribs here. Hopefully you have a better experience than I did.

Read the reviews and decided to see for myself, It deserves the praise. I love to cook, and to eat, and the love of cooking can be tasted in the Ribs. Gary (G) meet me at the counter and shook my hand and we had a little small talk, good guy. I plan several more trips to try everything here. The portions are very nice and the price is real good. A real BBQ restaurant that takes pride in the slow cooked flavor.

I've been here a couple of times and yes it is a dive, basically a converted old milk stand with very little room and very little parking (you just park wherever). But, however, incidentally, if you get there and the still have any (they often run out), their BBQ is some of the BEST around. Based on my experience, the quality and portions on the ribs and briskets vary a bit, but their pulled port is the best I have found and the portions are excellent. All of the sides I have had have been very good, fries hot and crisp, mac and cheese excellent (we are NOT talking Velveeta on noodles). The banana pudding taste a little bit institutional, but heck they often just offer it up for free. The guy/family that runs the place is always checking to make sure you are happy with the food and you will not go away hungry. Oh, and get this, most meals INCLUDE a drink so you do not have to drop and extra two-three dollars just for flavored water. On one hand, I can't wait until they get a bigger place, but on the other I hope growth does not mess up what makes this place special.

Great little BBQ joint! I had the pulled pork sandwich. It was very good along with the baked beans and collard greens. The owner also gave me a free banana pudding to try, which was also great. The staff was very friendly and made us feel welcome.

The food here is the best BBQ in Jacksonville, and I have tried many. If you want upscale BBQ, this is not your place. If you want finger licking, smoky, slow cooked BBQ, fall off the bone BBQ, then you have found nirvana. As a BBQ addict, when we moved to JAX last year, I began searching for "real" BBQ like you see on the cooking shows on TV. I know BBQ, having lived in the west and have eaten good BBQ in NM, CO, TX, TN, etc. Chanced upon this gem, and have been back a dozen times. Can't get enough. The dude wins many of the BBQ cookoffs around here, and there is a reason. Its a small, family run place, not fancy. Maybe 10 tables, if you count outside. My favorite is the ribs, and you can put homemade sauce of your choosing on them (I don't - the flavor is that good). Compliment it with your favorite side (collard greens, potato salad, cole slaw, etc. - all made in house). Service by his wife. Cashiered by his daugthers that my mid-20s banker son says is the hottest thing around. Only problem with Gs - they aren't open for dinner, on Sundays or Mondays. Guess he wants a life outside of the restaurant. When my kids come to visit from the northeast, they demand a visit to Gs. Get in your car and treat yourself - its great AND affordable. BTW - Gs caters!
