We went after church February 1. My wife had a traditional Reuben, and I had the Metropolitan Burger. It's quite nicely decorated, black & white checkered tile floor, mostly booth seating, fairly bright, and quite clean inside. The entry is a little unusual, as visitors enter by the deli area and walk back about 30 feet to the hostess station, a bit different than most dine-in places. My wife's Reuben was tasty, but with an unusual presentation: the meat, sauerkraut and cheese were rolled together into a tube-shape, and then placed in the sandwich. Partner said she'd rather it were laid out normally for an easier bite; it does make for a thick-ish sandwich. She also couldn't detect any Russian dressing, hence wanted more (or even some, I couldn't see any dressing at all. She prefers her Rueben grilled; this one was not. My burger did not include the promised chipotle-mayo nor the arugula. It did come with nice green leaf lettuce and a lovely slice of tomato. It was a decent burger, our thick cut fries were good and the pickles were excellent. The cole slaw was unremarkable, bland and went tasted but uneaten. Prices here tend to be higher than typical for Lakeland and I don't see any good reason why. Crispers has a nearly perfect Reuben, and locals know the Chop Shop downtown is our go-to for burgers. Both are less-expensive options, Crispers is just a few hundred yards west in Lakeside Village. I see that Toojay's is well-regarded at other locations in Florida. Reviews here and on TripAdvisor have been kind of extreme on both ends for this location, some love what they have, others not so much, plus the usual haters and bad-luck stories. I think that going forward they'll hit their stride and become regarded as an upscale go-to. But, we don't live in New York, or SE Florida, and don't like to pay those prices, so that will remain an impediment for my family and our prospects for returning. This location does catering, so that might be good. It does have outdoor seating, but I don't know why anyone would bother, cars at high speed are noisy and your views are the Publix parking lot and the Polk Parkway and N. Frontage Road.

I have eaten at Toojays in Orlando many times and always enjoyed it. This location is the polar opposite. Service was slow and the food was mixed. My dinner companion had the chopped salad and was happy with it. I had my usual go to, the salmon with the dill sauce. After waiting 15 minutes the waitress informed me they were out of rice. No problem mashed potatoes are fine. Ten minutes later she brings the dish of over cooked dry salmon with hot dill sauce. I have eaten this meal many times and the dill sauce has never been hot? I had asked for extra dill sauce when I ordered and had to ask again after the food was served. It came out HOT with the oil separating on top. Not sure I will come back to this location after my experience and reading the reviews of other diners here.

tried it twice, first time it was ok but today the service and food quality was terrible. the corned beef was dry and flavorless, Matzo Ball Soup had a less than golf ball sized ball in it and the cheese cake was curdled. I'm Jewish and have eaten at Jewish Delis all my life but to ask for a manager and never have one show up! Don't waste you're time or money as this place will fold do to crap management

Brought the family to Toojay's for Sunday dinner and it was pretty bad. The food was worse than mediocre. The service was spotty and the quality of the deli meats was questionable. First problem we noticed was the way they handle customers waiting to be seated. You have to just stand in line and wait. No taking your party count and name and waiting to be called. Just a line. Not a big deal whatsoever but it was a sign of things to come. We ordered the pastrami sandwich, the meatloaf, two cheeseburgers, a bowl of chili, and the combination appetizer. I'll start with the positive. The thousand island dressing/dipping sauce was great. Best I've ever tasted. The cole slaw was cold, crispy, and creamy. The dill pickles were also very good. The cheeseburgers were completely tasteless even though they had bacon and mushrooms. The pastrami in the pastrami sandwich tasted like mediocre supermarket deli variety. Although the menu says it's "piled high", it was not. Looked like someone grabbed a fist full of pastrami and threw it onto the bread leaving the sides of the sandwich with no meat whatsoever. The meatloaf was one of the worst tasting meatloaves I've ever had the displeasure of tasting. The chili tasted like it came out of a can or bag. We informed the waitress about the cheeseburgers having no taste and our displeasure with the meatloaf and did not even receive an I'm sorry. We usually never leave a restaurant without ordering at least one dessert but we were all so let down by this experience we all decided not to keep throwing away our money. We will not be returning to this restaurant. Two out of our party of 4 had stomach related issues within 20 minutes of leaving the restaurant. I'll leave it at that....

I had my first trip to Toojays yesterday and I was very happy to have a true NY style deli in Lakeland. The matzo ball soup was excellent as well as my hot pastrami and corned beef sandwich. Our server (Stephanie) was a delight. We will definitely return.

My soup came & it wasn't hot & barely warm. Had to send it back. My meal came, & IT was a lot of food & tasted good, but cold. Had to ask for it to be heated. The dessert was excellent!

Slow service, mediocre food, and freezer burnt chocolate cake. NOT my idea of a good time.

Service was slow, food was mediocre. Not really kid friendly (my kids hated the kids meal cookie.) Not planning to go back.

The deserts and pastries are on point! But the lunch I had was far from great. The waitress commended me for ordering the beef brisket sandwich as it was "everyone's favorite" but the bread was stale and what little meat was on the sandwhich, was flavorless. Of it weren't for the dipping sauce I would have choked on it. Nonetheless I'd go back and try other things, probably breakfast

Four people four different dishes, nothing was fresh no one was happy. Soup came with two meals took 20 mins to get the soup two mins later the meals came. I hear the bagels are good though.

First up the Cheese Blintzes which came with a dish of canned blueberry pie filling. Which was not great but the best in show for entire meal. Next was the Loaded Latkes which were the broken potato pancakes fried up semi greasy. Our main meal I ordered the TooJay Classic on challah with the potato pancake as a side. I got the Classic on rye and fries. The less than knowledgeable waitress took it back and return with the same plate with the bread changed haphazardly and still covered with fries that I did not want. I asked again for my potato pancake and got it 10 minute later. My partner got the Pot roast, Mash Potatoes, green beans, and Matzo ball soup. The Pot roast was dry and flavorless, Mash Potatoes were ok and the green beans were awful. The Matzo Ball soup tasted like Campbell's chicken broth with a sad excuse for a Matzo ball in it. It was suppose to come with her meal but they tried charging on the bill. We will not return like I usually give new places a second chance. To over priced for lackluster food and terrible service.

I'd give it no stars if it would let me, the service was very slow. The food is nothing special. My wife goes to one in Tampa and loves it. I hope they get their act together but three strikes and I'm outta here. Go to the publix deli and get a sandwich,Ike's ahead

Not like the other TooJays. Smaller dessert and deli section and the service is always slow no matter if you are there for lunch or dinner or sometime in between. Food is usually overlooked do you know why it took so long. I don't think it's the waitstaff' fault as opposed to the kitchen staff. Management is never out and about. I've tried this place 5-6 times in Lakeland since it opened and finally "just said no".

  • W L.

Eh. Overpriced and wasn't impressed. It was honestly just "ok". I've had better subs and sandwiches from Panera and Publix. They do seem to have an ok bakery selection (I guess).

very nice place; food was great. got cobb salad, $10.29 roast beef w/ chz $.99 sw. $9.59, cup of chilli $4.59 one knish $3.49, dessert combo $6.99 and a fountain drink $2.49 total bill w/ tax $41.12. plus tip(A few things I didn't like. $ .99 for chz on a sandwich. paying extra for FF $2.49. if you buy a burger in comes w/ff and chz. so why charge extra for it when you order a dehli sw. also, the server was not real friendly) again it's a great place to eat, but it's not cheap. (so share a meal)

Tried the establishment again with a group. Once again I ordered the Roasted Vegetable salad. My parties entrees were served while my salad order did not. Twenty minutes later my salad was served. The vegetables that were suppose to be roasted were raw. The asparagus was raw and very bitter. A lot of hype for crap food. Your Previous Reviews 1.0 star rating 11/24/2014 Edit " Ordered Roasted Vegetable Salad to go. 'Roasted Veggies' were from a jar/can. No almonds, no salad dressing and the greens were slimy and wilted. Another bag salad that sat too long in the walk in. Total gross. Not worth the $8.99 This is definitely not a NY quality, just another Florida franchise.

I've been here four times since they've opened and the service has gotten progressively worse. On each visit, I've had to wait at least 10-15 from the time we were seated just to get a waitress. On three visits they were either out of food or got the order wrong. On this last visit, we waited forever and after ordering breakfast, they got the order wrong, forgot one of our drinks, and severely overcooked everything (corned beef hash was hard and crunchy). The waitress never returned to check on us so we told another waitress. When I pointed out the missing food (no toast for either of us, missing an egg and no sausage as ordered), the original waitress brought one undercooked egg ten minutes later and actually asked if we still wanted the rest!!! When we asked to speak with a manager, she came over with a hand full of dishes and clearly was not focused on us. About 5-10 minutes later she finally returned hands free and listened to our issues. She comped out meal and we left. Incredibly disappointing how fast this restaurant is going down hill.

I was really excited about this place. First experience was a let down. Matzo ball soup was okay. Blintzes were okay, lox and bagel was rock hard with poor quality lettuce onion and tomato, and the sandwich was horrible. Felt like a waste of a meal

Tried this place for the first time today. Read about it online. Way over priced. $15.00 for sandwich and a bowl of soup. Bowl of soup would not fill a small coffee cup. Not sure what the big deal is about a sandwich with meat rolled tight as a fist and unable to get it your mouth. Could have eat at Silver Ring for less than half the price. Won't be returning.

As I hoped, breakfast at Toojay's is a world apart from dinner service. My wife and I almost did not go but we are happy we did. I think this solidifies my opinion that some places should probably stick with one meal of the day and not try to do everything. We arrived around 9AM on Sunday. When we went in there were about 6 or 7 groups in front of us. My only complaint with this trip was right now - they did first come, first serve, and had everyone stand in a line. They didn't take names and check with groups behind the first one to see if they could be seated. Everyone was nice enough, but it took longer than it should have. And when we left the line was out the door! Once we sat down we were greeted very quickly, and got some iced tea and coffee. (The coffee isn't too bad!). We placed our order and didn't wait too long for food. I ordered a create your own omelette (onions, peppers, bacon, cheddar) with home fries and an everything bagel. Omelette was good, home fries were delicious (they are definitely fried, but come with some onions and peppers, mmm). The bagel.. well, it's not an authentic NY style bagel. Wasn't too bad but I probably wouldn't get one again. (I'd put it in line with Panera bagels, not the great local bagel places around). My wife got two eggs over easy (she said they were just a tad bit undercooked but it was okay, better than overcooked!) with their challah (potato) bread. The bread is very tasty. I would get that instead of a bagel next time, and definitely try their french toast that uses it. Unfortunately we both avoided the potato pancakes after the dinner fiasco. We didn't see anyone else with them either. We both love potato pancakes but I guess we will continue to make them at home. So, long story short - we will be back for breakfast definitely, but not for lunch or dinner.

Not impressed with this place. Ordered the stuffed cabbage dinner. The cabbage was so tuff a knife could barely cut it. The green beans were ok. Salads were ok, but nothing great. Our party of three will rate this place at two stars. Been to the Orlando location and it was good. May try again in the future and will update my review.

This is my 3rd trip too this location. Certain deli sandwiches are great (Reuben & Rachel) but service is terrible. Today waited 10 minutes in a line. They should have a seated waiting area. Then once seated have too wait too long to be greater by server. The food took forever to come. Once it came, my youngest child had no meal. It took me having to ask TWICE about his meal, and finally came after about seven minutes after the other meals were laid down. Our server was nice bout everything just moved at a snails pace. When we had to search for someone to ask our waitress for the check and the wait and wait to get the check. The last time I ate there for lunch, we ordered some dessert but a prolonged wait made us grab our check, take it up front our self where we found our ticket still hanging and unaddressed. The decor is terrible. Brand new place looks like it's been there years.

This place is delicious. Eat here. The Google reviews for some reason are not that great but they are WRONG. The J&J sandwich is my favorite. Good stuff!! Very friendly staff too.

Whenever I eat here, I always ask myself "Am I waiting for my lunch? Or the Second Coming?" Because I bet the latter will happen before the former. I'll put money on it. My last straw was when I was picking up food and while I waited in front of the dessert case, I noticed flies inside of it. I pulled one of the kids working aside and said "you really ought to take care of that...there's flies in there." Kid proceeds to get some hand broom to try to swat it out - dropping god knows what debris ALL OVER the desserts, letting about 5 more flies in in the process. That whole scene left me disgusted and I won't return.

We've been about eight times since it opened and only once had everything went smoothly. Food can be good but it's hit and miss. The service is poor to fair. We decided we're not going again soon.

Hmm. Well. A place that appears to tout itself as a New York style deli yet does not offer a bacon, egg, and cheese bagel is questionable in my eyes. The place was quiet for breakfast on a Saturday morning. Walked in and got a table no problem. The server was very sweet and attentive--I never saw the bottom of my coffee cup (which was brewed perfectly). I ordered the western scramble. I was a little put off with the slightly overlooked latkes in the bottom of my dish and the mountain of cheese atop my eggs. I agree with other reviews--my sesame bagel was fresh, but more of the Panera variety. Overall, not a bad experience. I would come back again. I saw some elements that felt very New York that would be off putting to Lakeland locals (sandwich styles/options, etc). If you're looking for something different than the mass chain fast food places in town, give Toojay's a shot (just don't expect an authentic NYC experience).

I am from New York...maybe that's why I can't give them a great review. I didn't try the sandwiches so that I can't comment on. I did, however, have a knish that tasted super plain and a Mandarin Chicken salad that tasted a step above bland. When I walked in I wasn't greeted, by any of the 3-4 people that we right there at the entrance. My server was nice but didn't try to sell the place or suggest anything on the menu. the prices are crazy too for how the taste was I should've paid 10$ less than I did. Most likely not coming back.

Awesome food, wonderful service and great prices. They were able to accommodate 14 of us seated together and our waitress made sure we had everything we wanted. We will be back.

This place didn't blow my socks off at all. Service is amazing but the foods kinda lacking. I love the kids menu. I got a burger and it tasted like burnt socks and it was suppose to be medium. The fries are average and the tea was a little UNsweet so I was sad :( My daughter loved her pizza which is like a triangle piece of toast with good toppings. She loves it and the side options for then are super healthy ! The cake I'm not blown away at all it wasn't moist it wasn't flavorful it was just there. There aren't a whole lot of options cause it seems like this is different type of sandwich joint and I wasn't feeling it. I haven't heard amazing things but it's one of those places some like sme don't So I'm not saying don't go. Try once. Then review. Just one of those places

I actually really like Toojay's, but this location has some problems. It's pretty new, so hopefully they will work the kinks out soon. My friend and arrived at 2pm on a Friday and the place was packed. We waited nearly 20 minutes before we were sat. Then, we were sat our table was very wobbly so we asked to be moved. The hostess walked us to another table, but it was still dirty and she just left us standing there in the aisle. After about 2 or 3 minutes, we decided to sit down at the dirty table. The waitress then came to clean it off. We gave our orders to the waitress, and I ordered a sandwich and matzo ball soup. 10 minutes later, the waitress returns to inform me that they are out of matzo balls! How can Toojay's be out of matzo balls on a Friday at 2:45?! That just blows my mind. I told her not to worry about it. She brought me a salad to try and make up for it, which was very nice and I appreciate that, but really? Out of matzo balls? Again, I'm hoping these are just bugs that need to be worked out and that they will be shortly.

Service was great. My server was very attentive. I had the Turkey dinner. Turkey was really dry, the stuffing was overcooked, the green beans were undercooked, the mashed potatoes was actually really good. My husband had the Chicken Marsella. The chicken was cooked well not dry, the Marcella had only mushrooms in it (they were cooked well), the green beans were undercooked and the garlic butter on top did not go with the rest of the meal. I did get the Banana Dream Cake for dessert and it tastes like it's name!!! Very moist, lots of banana flavor, with chocolate chips. Definitely recommend!!! My husband got the Rugalah flakey, buttery, filling!

I like to consider myself a knish connoisseur so I'll say that although this is not a New York knish, it's pretty good. The Sandwiches have not disappointed and the service is great.

Just wanted to give my take on my breakfast at TooJay's. I visited on a Sunday morning, seated promptly, hostess was pleasent. I ordered the Nova on a Bagel. Presentation was perfect and as ordered. Out of the selection of about ten choices, plain is the way to go with Nova, dont want anything taking away from flavor of the smoked fish. Generous portion of thinly sliced nova, bagel toasted and buttered as requested. Cream cheese, sliced tomato, lettuce in the side. PERFECT. Shout out to my server, Courtney, very refreshing to be served by someone with such a joyful disposition. Great place.

I have eaten fare from here a few times. Once when "Corporate" was still in for the Friends and Family night. My Boy friend has a food allergy. Even though their ticket machines have alerts buttons for food allergies, nobody uses them. Nobody can tell you what foods have what allergens either. I had the meat loaf, which was good for what it was. The gravy on the potatoes was not overly tasty tho. My boyfriend had a modified Tilapia. Which was fantastic. I have eaten the Brisket Dippers. The first one I had was FANTASTIC. The meat was soft and perfectly cooked, the onions where caramelized correctly and melted in with the Swiss cheese. The only down side was there was too much wine in the au jus. I loved it so much I ordered it a second time a few weeks later. The meat was over cooked, but the onions and cheese did their best to compensate. The au jus still had too much wine in it. While restraints do their best to put out their best quality, sometimes they have an off night. Which is ok. So my boyfriend and I ate in on Christmas Day. Our server (who is my room mate) was quick an efficient. Kept or drinks full, and joked around with us and the rest of her tables. Our food took awhile, and our appetizer arrived AFTER our entree. Much to the annoyance of my server. I ordered a Ruben, my boyfriend got the Turkey Ruben and we had ordered the Loaded Latkes. The Ruben was ok, meat was over done. The kraut and dressing where good but I was unable to taste the Swiss chess. The fries where great (no salt) and the cole slaw was crispy and creamy. Needed some cracked pepper and salt tho. My boyfriend enjoyed his meal, however he had been on an isolation diet. So a night where he could have something different was probably why he enjoyed it so much. The latke was awesome. While I could have done without the bacon, the latke itself was crispy on the outside (looked almost black.. Time to clean the fryers?) and soft on the inside. The chess, sour cream and green onions tied in nicely. I would go back, it seems to be a game of cook roulette though

I have eaten breakfast, lunch and dinner here. All were a great experience and I will definitely go back. My daughter loves the kids meals, the matzo ball soup is excellent and for being a vegetarian, their are so many things to choose from. If you want dessert, go for the chocolate mousse, cheesecake. It's to die for.

Tried them the first week they opened and was very disappointed. We ordered two sandwiches at almost $10 each at lunch. The lunch meat was very low quality. It was very fatty and we had to pick through most of it so that we could at least eat the sandwich. They were very crowed and it was very confusing on where to order. No one was directing customers that were wanting to eat there versus those that wanted to place a to go order. We ended up waiting 20 minutes in the line to be seated before I went to the counter to ask if we had to wait just to place a to go order. The lady said no, that she could take my order. Not sure if we will go back. Our lunch was definitely not worth the wait or price.
