We had a great experience. Fish & Chips, shrimp cocktail and coconut flan were all amazing! Perfect cole slaw! Atmosphere just fabulous... Loved the service too!

Here on an educational conference with an hour and a half to eat between sessions. We waited an hour and 10 minutes for sandwiches. While the food was very good...the service was incredibly slow and they did not seem too worried that we only had 20 minutes to eat and pay and that we were very upset. It was also rather pricy as is everything else in this hotel.

Bear in mind I did not have to pay... Ahi ahi was slightly overcooked with barely any raw meat in the center. Never the less, it was still delicious! I cleaned up every inch of the plate Palm Chardonnay Silver spring was very sweet... yum!

Not bad. The setting (and the resort, for that matter) are kinda schlocky, but the food was acceptable. If I could break down this review, I'd give 5 stars to the service. Really high quality, personable, and timely.

We decided to have a special family holiday meal on the boat of Sunset Sam's...so we booked our place on the boat as well as 4 rooms at Gaylord Palms Resort. We arrived for our 7:15 reservation only to find that they instead had a private party & our 7:15 reservation on the boat would not be honored. We were offered a table not far away in what looked like a decades old fast-food restaurant. We ordered drinks, some of which took approximately 1 HOUR to make it to the table & that was only after we started to complain about the wait. The food arrived another HOUR later & half of it was completely inedible fish. They had what appeared to be approximately 20 servers/waitstaff and all of them seemed confused about what they were supposed to be doing throughout the night [this with the restaurant full of empty tables]. So in essence, the 4 rooms booked for this dinner + dinner was about $2,000.00.

Sunset Sam's at the Gaylord Palms has two different ambiances which don't quite equal out. The inside is comparable in design and decor to a bar/restaurant like Chili's or some other huge chain restaurant. However the outside, which is actually inside, feels like you're out on a sailboat and is quite a romantic ambience. It's unfortunate if you sit in the less appealing side of the restaurant. Their menu offers mostly seafood and is quite expensive. In order not to go over per-diem, I ordered a glass of white wine and the Cedar Key Clams over Linguini ($20) where I would have preferred a filet mignon ($45). The clams and linguini were served in a sweet garlic clam emulsion topped with pepper flakes. It was a good meal but Sunset's Sam is quite overpriced.

Food was good but SERIOUSLY overpriced; service was VERY SLOW. Our table of six arrived AFTER the dinner rush and did not order multiple courses, but service took nearly 3 hours from seating to exit.

Thank gawd for expense accounts and show-off coworkers, cuz your gonna need both to endure this dining "experience." The menu was limited on selection but not on price. The tuna tartare was very good. The ceasar salad was very goopy (is that a word?). The crab bisque was rich. And barely luke-warm. "Sea Salt Fries" for Five Bucks? How much does salt actually cost? That, plus the wafting smell of burning sterno torches (or from some source) makes a richly and expensively deserved 2-star rating. Did I mention the chairs? I've sat on tree branches in the woods that were far more comfortable, even without the benefit of a boat cushion.

Waitress was sweet but our food took a long time although it wasn't busy. Food was okay... Nothing special. Wouldn't recommend coming here to anyone.

Another OK dining experience at the Gaylord. I tried both lunch and dinner. Pro's service is nice, (though not fast), and the live tarpon are cool to see. Con's: The food isn't very good outside of some of the salads. One of my guests had fish and chips which were so greasy they were sent back.

Took the family to Gaylord on an overcast day in Orlando. Hotel is wonderful to explore inside and just wander. Had lunch on the sailboat, felt like we were outside. Food is pricey but decent. Kids menu available. Timed our lunch during fish feeding which was a nice bonus(1 pm mon/wed/fri). Overall a nice half day at Gaylord.

Island Nachos: Pulled Pork, Key West Krackers (kettle potato chips), Black Bean Relish, Mango Salsa, Mozzarella Cheese, and Avocado Sour Cream. You have no idea how good that is. Seriously, when we have guests in town, a visit to Gaylord Palms is always a must. And our visit always ends with an order of the Islands Nachos at Sunset Sam's. OMfreakyfreakyG I'm getting hungry just thinking about them! It's too bad this place has a bit of a bad rap on Yelp. I think it is a beautiful restaurant, set in the Key West atrium of the resort, and complete with a full size sailboat where you can be seated for your meal. While I haven't explored their entire menu, I have to imagine it is more than acceptable. Nevertheless, I will continue to return to Sunset Sam's, and recommend it to anyone who will listen, if for no other reason than the Islands Nachos. Yes, they are that good. freakyfreakyG!

My review is based on the sailboat. I've read other reviews and don't understand all the complaining about price, hello people it's Disney area... Duh! I loved it! Had drinks there a few times. I also enjoyed the food. Such a neat setting, the whole place has got such great ambiance. I'd go back again and again.

Eh. The Gaylord in general doesn't have many options for vegetarians but Sunset Sam was the only restaurant that had seating available when we went soo this is where we ended up. The live musician was my favorite thing about this place - and the slanted glasses. The chef did his best to come up with vegetarian dishes for us which was really nice of him but still. The dinner was only "okay" for how much we paid. Great ambiance though, they did an amazing job with that.

Fish n Chips were greasy and under done and because you are in the resort they charge stupid high prices. Walked down to Logans Roadhouse for better food at a good price.

Very cool ambience. Waiter was okay, had to get someone to find him in order to get our drinks. The crab bisque was the best part of this experience. Little lumps of blue crab were a nice touch. It started with the water... Which tasted like it came out of a river. I worked at a place in south fl with a vero water filtration system which made the water taste like smart water. The fact that a place like this can serve water that taste like this is unimaginable. I wouldn't serve that water to my sister. So then we ordered $4 sodas so we wouldn't drink that. Waiter tells me they have a filter and it's fl water. I call bull. Next the calamari was underdone. I enjoyed the sauces that came on the side but wished it would have been left in the fryer a little longer. Was hoping for a nice surprise here and walked away disappointed. Lots of better food outside of the resort.

This place is pretty cool. It's located in the Key West wing of the Gaylord Palms hotel so the outside part of this restaurant is on a replica of a large yacht. There are palm trees dotting the area, the wooden boardwalk leading up to the restaurant check in helps set the mood. The boat is located on a bed of water about a foot or so deep. It might be actual tropical water cause I think I saw a parrot fish swimming around. I came for lunch and had a mango iced tea, the conch chowder (didn't really like it since it was in the red broth, I think in the Keys, they make the real conch chowder in a white broth), and the mahi sandwich which was served with fries. The sandwich wasn't bad and the fries were good. I stopped in quickly for lunch before returning to the conference so didn't get to sample dessert. My waiter was nice and the setting they set up inside the hotel for this place is really cool, they did a great job.

The kids loved Sam's Fish Camp because it looks like Key West and is designed to look like you are dining on a boat. The adult food tasted delicious and the menu is set up a la carte--you order a type of fish, then you pick whichever sauce/seasoning and a side to go with it. The kids Mahi really disappointed me because mine tasted so great. I can't believe the cooks don't season the fish so that the kids actually enjoy the entree. The kids Mahi tasted bland and fishy, while the adult entrees were seasoned, excellent pieces of white fish. My nephew didn't complain about his food, but he didn't eat it either. When I tasted his piece of fish, I let the waiter know just how much it disappointed me. To their credit, they comped the kids meal. We ate the banana split dessert which tasted better than any banana split I've ever had.

imagine you're on a boat, adrift at sea... you're able to catch plenty of fish to survive on but you only have one side preparation that you serve with the fish each time -- this restaurant is not at sea and the ship is clearly anchored indoors

This restaurant has been re-modeled since our last visit and is now re-named Moor. We went for dinner on a weeknight and were seated immediately. All the servers and hosts seem to be wired with intercom earphones and microphones. We had an awkward moment when we thought she was talking to us but she was really talking to another employee. :-) We were seated on a table on the "ship" out on the water. Very nice, but use caution depending on time of day. The sun might be bright and in your eyes. My wife complained that the wooden chairs were uncomfortable, but the other side of the table had a padded bench to sit on. We were there at sunset and it was nice to see the transformation from bright sun to evening with all the lights they have in there. Our server was soft spoken and a little difficult to understand. However she was very attentive and gave great service. We had two burgers, a fish sandwich, a shrimp cocktail, a salad, a couple of soft drinks, and two desserts. Total was $82 with tax. The food tasted great and was served in nice presentations. We did not feel like wine, beer, nor cocktails, and noticed they had an extensive menu to select from. Next time we come we will bring an appetite for the beverages and give them a try. Our server validated our parking ticket, which is a must since parking at the Gaylord Palms is expensive. Visiting the Gaylord is always a nice treat since the "grounds" indoors under glass is always so beautiful.

I usually like to frequent a place at least a couple of times or sample many items before a review. However, I don't think I will be returning to Sunset Sam's again unless I am stuck at the Gaylord again and have no other choice. The nautical setting, on a boat in the middle of the "Key West" atrium is pleasant. Our server was lovely and really tried to please. I do not think it was her fault that it took ages for our food to arrive at our table. When my Crab Encrusted Grouper arrived it was overcooked and somewhat cold. I was so famished after waiting so long for it that I did not send it back. The accompaniments were not bad. The grits were tasty, although cold. The Brussel Sprouts were very good. This is one time I was truly thankful that the meal, which came to $45 for one dish (with tax and tip) was covered by an expense account!

The appeal of this place is its décor and ambiance. You can eat on a ship (i.e. a decent mock-up of a ship) set in the water with fish swimming around it. It looks neat. That's pretty much all this place has going for it. I ordered the Fish & Chips. It was the most ridiculously under-portioned service of fried fish I've ever been given in a restaurant. Fries tasted like they were standard frozen out-of-a-bag fries. All that for $20. None of the rest of the members of my dining party seemed particularly impressed with the cost or size of their meals either. Menu is surprisingly small and weak on selection. Pricing is elevated for no better reason than it is seafood, it is in a hotel, and it has a captive audience that they are betting would rather pay elevated prices than get in their cars and drive somewhere to eat. Do yourself a favor and use Urbanspoon to find a better rated restaurant in the area and drive there to eat. Service was friendly and attentive. Restaurant is clean and well-maintained.

The decor is nice . That's the highlight . I ordered the "filet" and lobster tail . Worst meal I have had in a long time . It is not a tenderloin filet, it's sirloin that they are calling a filet. When I asked the chef what cut of meat It was , he said it wasn't from the tenderloin but from the shoulder. Yeah, the shoulder is sirloin. The steak was over cooked, the lobster was so over cooked it was nearly impossible to scrape the lobster out of its shell. The cost was outrageous at $90 for the meal and 2 beers. They forgot one of the sides and never brought it out . So very disappointing . I pointed out how unhappy my friend and I were with our meals and there was no attempt to remedy at all . Horrible food.

This place is a major part of the grand allure of the Gaylord hotel. The restaurant on a ship IN a hotel is unique and seems like a fun experience. Despite the poor reviews I decided I would attempt to try it out anyway. Yes, I said attempt. I made a restaurant reservation over the weekend and was all excited to stay at the hotel with the ship in the lobby which you can dine on. I told family and friends what a fun unique experience it seems like....then Tuesday morning comes. I get an email from Open Table saying my reservation has been cancelled and to please enjoy using them again! :) WTH?! I didn't cancel my reservation so I called the hotel and sat on hold for 10 minutes while they figured out what was going on. Ten minutes later the lady gets back on the phone and says sorry but they are going to close it down for routine maintenance. Ok....They can maintain this place after dinner hours or before lunch hours. Apparently they think it is better to cancel peoples reservations with no explanation so they can tidy up during business hours. This doesn't totally surprise me after reading all the bad service reviews from other Yelpers. Since the food has received some pretty bad reviews too maybe this is a blessing in disguise. Guess I will never know.

I KNOW this is a hotel and I expect to overpay for food but.......I expect decent service and decent food and at least a decent portion. Eaten here twice in the last 2 months and disappointed both times. Had the fish fry 1st time ($19) and it was probably a 6 oz piece of fish and an order of average fries. It wasnt' terrible but def nothing special. On my 2nd visit a few days ago, we found ourselves stuck here, as its really the only reasonably (somewhat) priced place to dine at Gaylord if you don't want a fancy steakhouse, Sushi or a buffet. On 2nd visit, it took almost 10 min to get a server's attention, she forgot my beer order, forgot my wife's request for bread (actually she admittedly brought bread to the wrong table and apologized and then came back and said we have to wait for the next batch from the oven) and she just seemed harried and confused the entire meal. My daughter had Salmon which she liked and my Mahi sandwich was ok enough, but again a small piece of fish. And with a very limited menu, there was not much else appealing to me. If you can get off-site for dining, I would suggest you do so. The hotel itself is interesting to say the least....the rooms are nothing special but you are paying for everything outside your room, which, depending on your viewpoint, is either magnificent or cheesy (I find it a little of both)

Took my cousins family here last night including 3 young children. TERRIBLE experience. Waited 25' to be brought water and a menu. After ordering, food did not come for 35', then came in waves with half of us waiting another 15'. Kids were hungry, squirming, and bored (and so were the adults). The waitress was only slightly better than the kitchen. Food was only so so. May have been an off night for them, but I will never go back.

I came for dinner last night 12/15 prior to seeing ICE at Gaylord Palms. This was my first time for dinner, we usually just go for drinks. I have to say it was pretty good. My only complaint would be the price, but you kind of have to expect that in a high end hotel. This is the case with the other 4 or 5 restaurants on property as well. The decor is great. I love sitting and looking at the boat, while Christopher Cross plays in the back of my mind. I would definitely recommend the Ahi Tuna. i got two pretty large pieces of sushi grade tuna that was cooked perfectly.

Ok seafood. Located in the back of the hotel. The fish and chips were lackluster and needed Salt and a napkin for the oil. The bisque was good thick& creamy. When you walk in the restaurant it smells like a dirty fish tank and rotten filter due to the fish pond in front of the restaurant. EW. I asked to eat as close inside as possible . Pricey and long john silvers blows it away.

  • Michael B.

The ambience was fun, but the food was a huge disappointment. Most of it was very bland and not worth the price. And the attempts at "fusion" were poorly made - who wants "jerk" cocktail sauce. And the key lime, which had almost no tartness, came with a blackberry and a bit of white chocolate??**!! We won't be coming back and also told a group of 12 scheduled to come in a few nights to PASS and find another restaurant choice.

This place was way over priced for how poor the quality of food was. They didn't even have real ice tea. The server was the lone bright spot. Run don't walk away from this place.

I have eaten here a few times when I have stayed for optometry conventions. The food is good, but I'm not a seafood fan so I'm not especially crazy about it. However, it is a memorable place because you have the opportunity to eat on a large sailboat in a pool of freshwater inside the giant Gaylord Palms atrium. The place is fun for families. The glasses are oddly angled and the drinks light up. A really tall guy (on stilts) walks around and makes balloon animals for the kids.

Everything I had here was good! I had the shrimp Cobb salad one day and the pulled pork nachos. I'm sure they had a better name than that. It was good food and a great atmosphere.

A nice restaurant for seafood, burgers, wraps, etc. at the Gaylord Palms when you are not in the mood for a buffet. It is hidden in the back of the hotel. It is a fun place for families, but the service is slow, and very inflexible. I had the Cuban sandwich which was good but not an authentic Cuban.

    (3)
  • Dan W.

We watched a football game while sitting at the bar. Had a beer and a plate of pulled pork nachos which were pretty good. Pretty generic place overall. Would never have come if not staying at the hotel.

  • Jamie F.

Really overpriced, but that's kind of the norm for Orlando. I paid $50 after tip for an entree and hot tea. I had the cobia fish, which I think is also known as kingfish, which was served with sticky rice and mushrooms. It was quite good, and I would recommend it. They try to pull off a whole you're on a boat atmosphere but I don't think it works too well.

Got the Tuna appetizer and the Tuna salad. Was very disappointed that the waitress didn't tell me that those 2 things were exactly the same thing. It was pretty good though. Just not happy that I ate it twice. My colleague had the fish and chips and I had one of the fish. It was actually pretty good. Not a bad place.

Supposed to be a Key West atmosphere. But the menu has no conch on the menu anywhere. Really bizarre menu. So bizarre, we decided to finish our drinks and find somewhere else to eat.

  • Lisa P.

Sunset Sam's is excellent. Looking at the menu my first thought was that it was an overpriced hotel restaurant, I also eat allot of seafood so I can be fairly picky - but Sam's lived up to the hype, the serving portions were large and the quality of food superb. We had the crab dip and the 3 tier appertizer for 2. The dip was near perfect but i would pass on the homemade chips and ask for more of the bread to eat with it. The 3 tier was my fav, with a nice variety of choices, mostly fresh fish - the conch fritters were nice, and the tuna tartare and shrimp were fresh and delicious! Definatley worth a stop to try. It is casual and you eat on a sailboat inside the resort which has a great atmosphere. They did offer a kids menu, but it was overly pricey for the bad choices and there was plenty of food to share if your little one isnt picky. 5 stars!

    (5)
  • David O.

The food was outstanding. We ordered the sampler appetizer and the conch fritters were well prepared, with good sized pieces of conch in them. The ahi tar-tare was outstanding, the best thing on the plates. I had a whole fried yellow tailed snapper. It was prepared and seasoned perfectly - text book. The side dishes were just OK. My biggest complaint (had two meals there) was the service was painfully slow. Our dinner took three hours, completely unacceptable for the caliber of the food - this wasn't a nine course tasting menu. Also, as this is at the Gaylord, prices are very high.

Sunset Sam's is actually a boat and restaurant situated INSIDE the Gaylord Palms resort in FL. Check out the sting rays and cat fish swimming around the indoor pond! We had really friendly service but of course the vibe is super-touristy (being a hop, skip and a jump away from Disney prob. has something to do with it). When the waiter approached us on one occasion, he said "I'm Joe, and I'll be your captain today." I'm sure he enjoys saying that 20 times a day ;-) I had drinks / food here four times during the course of my stay, and it was quite good (but pricey given the resort location). You won't be steered off-course if you stick with a fresh caught seafood dishes. Drinks were also pretty decent. Additionally, we enjoyed the people-watching. At any given time, expect a cheesy cover band, stilt-wearing fire-breathers, jugglers or animal balloon makers. Incredibly contrived -- yes, but still fun and worth a stop if you're staying at this resort.

  • Sarcastic T.

One of the better options at the Palms for dinner. I like the option to choose a fish, choose the sauce and keep it simple. Over-priced like everything else and the veggies were swimming in butter. Wine selection was OK, cocktails were all syrupy sweet drinks. Our server was super nice and did a great job handling a huge unruly table.

Was there for our 25th wedding anniversary April 9th-10th. Started off with a "flat"coke for me and wife .. sent it back 2 times and still couldn't get my $3.50 glass of coke right so i just said i'll have water. Waited for 45 minutes and finally FOOD ... was cold and my wifes salad sucked . The entertainment was really hokey . Was there 5 yrs ago and had real nice experience . This place went down hill . Paying alot for crap. Save your money ... go to rt. 192 and find a much better reataurant

Was staying here for a convention and so one of the choices on sight. Its a bit goofy with the giant ship with the lagoon surrounding it, and jugglers and corny music. Good place to meet for some drinks and must say the entree I ordered was fabulous. Had the seared tuna and was given two huge pieces of delicious tasty fish. My friend said his entree wasn't too memorable, so it might be a hit or miss at this place.

Decent, but not great restaurant. Depending on what you order, this is a nice, and low fuss restaurant inside the Gaylord Palms Resort. I think it would be more fun to eat on the sailboat vs inside the restaurant, but there were no open tables when we were there. I tried the calamari appetizer and had a cheeseburger which were both pretty good.

  • Kelly P.

This review is based on the sailboat bar area of this restaurant. Sunset Sam's was booked for the night but that was OK with us. We found 2 seats on the sailboat and they served a full menu. The bartender was friendly and we ordered some "signature" cocktails. This bar is very laid back and it is easy to mingle with the other guests. We ordered some appetizers and relaxed for a few hours. My one problem with this place was the lack of music. A bar without music is just awkward. Around 6:30 an acoustic singer did start playing but by that point we were ready to move on. If they got a little island music on that boat it would have been perfect.

Our waitress, Jackie was amazing! The food is average but the friendly service and nautical atmosphere make it a great place to casually dine with kids. Also love the slanted water glasses!

I LOVED Sunset Sam's Fish Camp. I went there for a business lunch, but the atmosphere was so fun, bright, lively and tropical. Our table was on the sailboat, and our waitress -- "Captain" Jackie -- took us over to the railing to point out all of the different kinds of sea life in the surrounding pond. Jackie couldn't have been more friendly or accommodating. Our lunch was perfectly paced to allow space for conversation, and she was always ready with a recommendation on the menu. We started off with a shrimp appetizer (can't recall the actual name) over some slaw and the calamari strips. Both were excellent. The calamari was the best I have ever had, and the flavors in the shrimp were outstanding. I did not order a cocktail, but my colleague immensely enjoyed his fruity concoction, and I was perfectly content with my unsweetened fresh brewed iced tea with lemon (the iced tea at the Gaylord Palms ranks among my favorite). For my entree, I ordered the fish and shrimp tacos. Outstanding. The blackened fish was seasoned so well; I could have probably eaten the entire fish prepared that way! The shrimp came with a spicy sauce that brought the Mexican to the tacos. The presentation was beautiful with three tortillas, the fish and shrimp, with all of the "sides" in individual cups hanging off the side of the skillet: slaw, sauce, guacamole. I would definitely recommend these. My colleagues had the crab-cake salad, which also looked delicious. The portion was pretty large for lunch. Everything on the menu looked wonderful, and I'm sure it was all prepared to perfection.
