WOW!!!!! Talk about amazing food. EVERYTHING is on point here. BEST SOUL FOOD IN JAX BY FAR!! I literally Can't think of anything I'd change about my experience . The atmosphere, food, customer service; everything about this place is on point. This was my second time visiting and it was just as good , if not better than the last visit ! First off, When I walked in they were pretty busy but I was still immediately greeted by somebody welcoming me back! It was the same guy from my last visit around 3 months ago too!!! There was also a guy playing a saxophone like a pro!!! He even walked around and played at the tables ! I noticed that the manager was even walking around asking the people how they are doing .The customer service is SO on point here, I was really REALLY impressed. I absolutely love the atmosphere too,I left in such a great happy mood! I felt like I just left a family reunion or something , it was great!! There were people painting on one side of the room too! I've never seen so many smiling faces I'm seriously so impressed . I will definitely be returning here. Atmosphere was so refreshing; great food , great music and smiling faces ! I would recommend this place to everyone . I noticed tons of take out orders too which is very impressive as well!

Hands Down the absolute Best Soul Food in Jacksonville!!!! It reminds me of The Historic Sylvia's restaurant out of New York and The great Busy Bee in Atlanta. This place the Potters House in Great company. I see that so many others feel the same way so, I'm not going to add much more about the food it self other than Awesome ... The Service was none other than top notch....Andrea behind the counter ran that front line like a champ, she had the biggest smile and made sure we had more than enough per serving. Our waiter left no stone unturned, he was phenomenal. This place is classy, great soul food, and amazing prices.. If you have that itch for some down home cooking please look no further. I'll post our pics below... NOTE**** Ladies if your like me watching your figure, you may wanna go about once a month for your cheat meal lol...

Fantastic! Soul food heaven! Excellent fried chicken, mac and cheese, greens and cornbread. Smothered pork chops are awesome too! The family meal will save you a little money if everyone can agree on fried chicken and two sides. Very busy on Sunday after church, but worth the wait. Friendly folks work here!

From the moment you enter the door you instantly feel welcomed. If you are ever in a bad mood and need an uplift, this is the place to be. The food itself will lift your spirits right up! This is definitely the kind of place you visit weekly. Thank you Potter's House Soul Food Bistro for existing and being so wonderful!!

Loved this place. As a Southern boy who's been away from home a little too long Potter's really hits the spot. It reminds me of the food my grandma made growing up: made with a lot of love and saturated fat. They really hit the highlight reel of Southern classics with entrees including fried chicken, oxtails, and smothered pork chops. The sides are things like butter beans, field peas, sweet corn, candied yams, string beans and collard greens. If your mouth isn't watering already the desert aisle is packing peach cobbler and red velvet cake. On my last visit I had the fried chicken with mac and cheese and mashed potatoes and gravy. Big thank you to Sharon S. for giving me the recommendation on the mac here. It is killer - super creamy with a thick crust of melted cheese on top. The mashed potatoes with brown gravy were pretty standard. The fried chicken is probably the best I've had in Jax. I had a breast and a drumstick. Breasts tend to be one of the driest pieces because they are so lean, but the breasts here are tender and really juicy. It was so good that I ate everything, including the free cornbread in a matter of about 5 minutes. I don't even think I used silverware. People were staring. Had a hard time picking 4 or 5 stars for this place, but at the end of the day I probably wouldn't change a thing. I'm not saying its 5 star dining, but I can't imagine a better cafeteria style soul food spot existing in Jax. Delicious food and friendly service. Keep up the good work!

Wow!! I went with a party of 7 people and from the door we were treated like family coming home for thanksgiving. I ordered the fried fish (made to order), mac and cheese, collards, yellow rice with gravy and the corn bread. Each item was seasoned well and my server even threw in an order of fried shrimp. The customer service was excellent! ! Go here if you want excellent soul food.

Where do you even start with this amazing place. I really want to try the oxtail, but I can't get past the yummy chicken. Their collard greens and cornbread are absolutely delicious. Friendly staff.

To be brutally honest..... The food here is AMAZING! A family member of mine had mentioned several times to me that I had to try this place so I finally did and have been back three days in a row. Their mac and cheese is neck and neck with my grandmothers (just don't tell her that). They prepare each piece of fish to order and ooooooh yea its so amazing! The yams are amazing, the red velvet cake is amazing its like walking into big mamas house for sunday dinner..... Except you have to pay for this plate! There is a guy that "directs" the line who is annoying as hell but everyones in a better mood when they know their eating so 2 mins of him vs the plate I'm about to go hame on is a fair trade.

There aren't very many soul food restaurants I've gone to here in Jacksonville that have impressed me but I have to admit that Potter's House Soul Food Bistro may be number one to date!!! The food was delicious, very well seasoned, and reasonably priced! They serve your quintessential fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, smothered pork chops, and greens. They also had ribs on the menu and I may have seen fish as well but don't quote me on that. I ordered the oxtails with gravy and yellow rice and they were amazing!!! The meat was so tender and seasoned to perfection! They had a great variety of veggies as well. The greens and cabbage were some of the best I've had from a restaurant and the sweet potatoes were great too! On top of the food being delicious, the service was awesome as well. There was definitely southern hospitality being offered the moment we walked in. If you're ever in Jacksonville and are looking for some good ole' southern home cooking, I recommend you go to Soul Food Bistro.

I have never had anything that wasn't good here. One tip though if you get fried shrimp ask them to hold your sides because if you start your sides you won't enjoy the wonderful shrimp as much. The corn bread is the best I have ever eaten! Take your dessert to go so you can really enjoy it when you are not so full. Reasonable prices and great portions.

I went with my entire family after my daughter's ship returned from deployment. We were warmly welcomed, treated like family and the food was great! The prices were also extremely reasonable for our large family, a party of six everyone left well fed and happy. Great fried chicken, great yams, mac and cheese! The people behind the counter went out of their way to help you get your plate together and the gospel music was a wonderful and welcome touch. Truly added to the peaceful dining experience. Excellent for families and really great food at a fair and cheerful price.

Called in here for lunch today and discovered a little bit of heaven! Oh my goodness what a wonderful find, beautiful decor, the happiest most friendliest staff and the most wonderful food ever. I tried the Oxtail and it was fall off the bone tender and totally delicious. The gravy was perfect and there is not a thing I would change about it. Had the wonderful cheesy ooey gooey mac n cheese and sweet corn as sides and they were just amazing. And the corn bread - it was to die for - I wanted to bring a whole slab of it home. Hubby has the combo of fried and grilled chicken and said it awesome. Come hungry as the portions are huge but you will love every mouthful and they also offer senior discount - we actually got $7.80 taken off our bill which was almost like a free meal - what could be better than that? Something to remember - they are closed on Mondays but open every other day for tummy tempting delights.

All I have to say is I've died and gone to soul food heaven!!! The food is absolutely delicious!! We had the Mac and cheese, collard greens, cornbread, fried fish (basa), black eyed peas, oxtails (which are fall off the bone) and sweet tea.

I have to start by saying I've never been to the Potters House on the west side, but I'm totally in love with this place. It is in what used to be Johnny Carrinos on Atlantic and Kernan. To be very honest, I'd rather have a bowl of greens and cornbread ANY day over most of the gourmet places I've eaten at. There's just something warm and cozy about this type of food that brings me back to my mommas kitchen. I was warmly greeted by a gentleman right at the door. He explained the cafeteria style type of service, specials and how to cash out. I had the chicken tenders with collard greens, Mac and cheese, and broccoli chicken cheese rice. It came with a nice sized portion of cornbread as well. The meal comes with one meat and two sides, but you pay separately for drinks and desserts. However, still super affordable. The spouse had mixed two piece fried chicken with steamed broccoli and mac n cheese. The greens were truly deep in flavor, funk and had thin pieces of what I guessed to be neck bone. The pot likker just begged to be sopped up by the lightly sweet yellow cornbread. The Mac and cheese was awesomely rich and creamy, and super cheesy. The broccoli cheese rice casserole had soft tender flavorful small pieces of chicken throughout. It was topped with crispy melted cheese. I tried a bite of the fried chicken, it was super juicy, flavorful, tastefully seasoned like straight from granny's kitchen. We both had a slice of the double strawberry cake. Super moist, light and super tasty. All in all, we will be frequenting this place more often now. Can't wait to try other things on their menu. I also have to say, I truly have never walked away after a meal feeling happier and that the food in my tummy was really made with love. I also want to add that the service here was spot on. There was a young man who checked on us was so friendly, sweet and made us and others nearby feel like nothing was too much of a request. Nearly half filled drinks were not neglected, and we had a tall to go drink right as we we ready to leave without even askin. Kudos to these guys.

This food is AMAZING GRACE! We had it the nite before at a wedding reception and had to return back the next day to get a food blessing. If God is not proud of them, just know that me and my husband are. Do yourself a favor and get the Mac n cheese along with anything else on the menu. The staff is exceptional which makes it even better.

Heard of this Gem in Jacksonville decided to check it out. I was skeptical.....being a foodie and all....Well I was not Disappointed! I recommend the Oxtails with the Oxtails Rice, Greens, Mac N Cheese, candid yams n the peach cobbler. Enjoy!

I'm going to keep this simple. Read any of the glowing 5 star reviews you want...but go here. The food is simply awesome. The services is so very kind and good. They carried my wife's tray to the table because they saw she is on a cane. How cool. the best collards I've ever eaten. The juices ran out of the chicken when I bit it. I can't wait to get back here for the oxtail.

Potter's House Soul Food Bistro, how did you open right down the street and I never knew? Your macaroni and cheese and crispy fried chicken could have been in my belly months ago. Last night it was rainy, gross and we were rushed, all good excuses for not cooking. Lo and behold we are driving home when I spot a restaurant in the old O'Charlies location AND, it says Soul Food. Upon closer inspection, it says Potter's House! I always wanted to try the original location and had no idea this location at the corner of Atlantic and Kernan was open. We were very warmly welcomed when we came through the door and the cafeteria style dining was explained. The kiddos were happy that there was a face painter available. I decided on the fried chicken with mac & cheese and collards. Chicken was crispy and juicy without too much grease, mac & cheese was the best I've had in Jax, greens were good but not as good as the ones at Mojos. I was happy to see they had the vinegar with peppers I like and hot sauce available for the greens. Hubs had the chicken too with broccoli and mashed potatoes, he was happy. Kiddos had what else? Chicken tenders with fries. Once we were seated a server greeted us and checked on us throughout our meal. Super friendly and helpful. My only complaint was the really small plastic silverware, I would have preferred more substantial plasticware or real metal. Otherwise Potters House is a hit!

WELL, THE VERDICT: Arrived around 3:30 and we were greeted at the door by a friendly girl and asked if this was our first time and proceeded to give us directions. The line was at the first left turn buckle and took us 23 min to reach our trays and silverware. While in line we were just observing the process and the servers were yelling for Mashed Potatoes , Macaroni n Cheese and the kitchen was not replying so it held the line up again. Finally was asked what I wanted - Wife got chicken dark and I got Pork Chops with gravy on rice with mac n cheese and mashed potatoes and corn bread. Wifes chicken was very small pieces, leg and thigh. We sat in a booth and the cushions had no support. Will probably pick a table next time if there will be a next time. Pork chops were very thin and way over cooked and hard to cut. Gravy was good, Mac n Cheese was very cheesy almost too much but was Fine. Potatoes were warm not hot and the wife got the cabbage which she said was Fantastic. I also got a Coconut Cream Pie hoping it was as good as my Mother in Laws but that struck out as well. We finished and headed home. Now, I understand this place is not Ruth Chris or 3 Forks but from what I saw the speed to get everybody to the line and register was Snail Slow. Dark Chicken, was very small, Pork Chops very thin and tough and Gravy tasted like it was out of a can which it probably was as is most restaurants because I use to service many eateries over the years and saw the products they bought and the conditions of the kitchens etc.....SO, Donnie, I guess maybe we just got them on an off day but if it comes down to a $30.00 check and fried chicken I will have to stick with Beach Road Chicken Dinner. This was an Honest review because I know how reviews are calculated in the business and they are very important to the customer as well as the establishment.

Now I'm from the south and never did I expect to get some true soul food right here in Jax! I stopped in here yesterday for dinner and instantly saw how clean the restaurant was, how friendly the staff is, and the gospel music playing over the sound system haha. The prices were reasonable, especially for the caliber of food you get! I ordered the fried chicken (white meat), Mac and cheese, and collards. Everything was superb! I definitely hurt myself and washed it down with the best sweet tea I've had in a while! Everyone that worked there was really friendly and it was as if I had went to my aunts house to grab some eats. I will definitely go back to at least save a little room for dessert.

These guys do soul food right! From the moment you walk in you're treated like family. The folks at Potter's House truly make you believe that they about your experience and you as a person. The food is served cafeteria style with customers walking through a line with a tray and picking out what they'd like. From smothered pork chops to oxtail they offer a wide variety of the true southern favorites. Their candied yams really taste like candy. Sooooo sweet! I always have to have some. As someone who's not a cabbage fan, I would make a special trip to Potter's House for theirs. It's stellar. My favorite item they offer though is the oxtail wontons. These things are addictive! Tender oxtail meat wrap in a little pocket and fried. How could that be bad? If you love soul food and haven't been to Soul Food Bistro you're slacking.

If you are looking for some down home country cooking, this place is the best! Be prepared to be full beyond belief and have a siesta lined up afterwards. It's not the cheapest place in town but the value is in every bite. I recommend the smothered pork chops with mac n cheese and mashed potatoes covered in gravy. And if you are in the mood for a little dessert afterwards you should try the peach cobbler. The staff is also a group of good folks. You are greeted as you walk in the door and made to feel at home by every employee there. Don't just take my word for it go see for yourself.

I have tried this place twice. The first time was on New Years Day. Food is bland and extremely over priced. Fried chicken has no taste. Fried pork chops no taste. Collards have sugar in it and I didn't care for that. Mac and cheese bland. Black eye peas nasty. My bill today came to $19 and change. I was starving and decided to give it one more shot. I had a side salad, 2 fried pork chops, Mac and cheese, Yams. Sweet tea and a slice of red velvet cake. The cake is good. Bottom line this is food minus the "Soul".

Some of the best fried chicken I've had. I don't normally like veggies but I love all the veggies and sides they offer.

I am now officially OLD. They gave me my very first Senior Citizen discount. So I have heard about the Potter House from just about every yelper out there. I finally made it and it is pretty darn good. Upon arriving I was greeted by a nice young lady and asked if I have been here before. Finding out no she gave me the whole run down on ordering and service. Now I decided on the fried pork chops and the yelp famous mac n cheese with some steamed cabbage to go along side. First the chop was cook well. Juicy with a thin crust that was quite tasty. The mac n cheese was also really good. Creamy and full of a good cheddar. The cabbage was just the way I like it, soft but not mushy. The whole meal was good maybe except for the fact that I'm old now.

Went there for lunch today. The food was outstanding, ordered the 2 piece Fried dark meat chicken, corn bread, mac and cheese along with corn. The chicken was moist nice fried skin. The other order was fried shrimp along with filet fish fry, also totally outstanding fresh and tasty. The service was first class all the way from the time you walked in till you left. For those that have not tried it you need to try this place. Prices are very reasonable and portions are large.

We have a Soul Food Bistro!! We first went to the one on the Westside and loved it, but we've only been once or twice because it's ALL the way across town. JVille probs. So when we saw they were opening one right around the corner from our house (literally) we were excited, and just hoped it would be as good as the original. It is! We both had the fried chicken (what else?) and of course yummy sides. Everything was fabulous, what else can I say? Service was wonderful, they're very attentive, keep your drink filled, overall just a wonderful experience! We will be back, as soon as I get off this diet....

First time here since moving to J'ville and I have to say this place was really awesome. My mover had suggested we stop by and pay this place a visit. Glad we did. I've had my share of southern comfort food and I must say this was on my top list. Brought the family here (17 people) and we were all delighted. Who cares if it's cafeteria style it was succulent and scrumptious and delectable. The bestpart about there was no wait and the server was excellent for meeting our needs. Will be going back. Keep up the excellent job Potter's House.

The food here is consistently great. Always fresh. Tonight I had the fried chicken dark with yams and macaroni and cheese. The server talked me into getting the red velvet cake and it did not disappoint. We don't get here often since we've move, but it's always a treat.

I understand why this large, busy place is popular, but frankly I think the food is good or mediocre, not great. I was delighted to see that they had fried gizzards. While I prefer Potter's spicy, tasty breading to that at Beach Road Chicken Dinners, the actual gizzards are scrawnier here. My two side dishes were mediocre: the collard greens and the steamed broccoli (since I was eating fried gizzards, I tried some healthy sides!) Finally, in my opinion the cornbread is far too sweet to be really good; again, I would call it mediocre. The staff all are busy, friendly and in good spirits (and they have to work hard at a place this busy!) You can see all the other menu items in front of you (cafeteria style) and nothing else looked especially appealing to me aside from the fried fish. I will try some other places before I come back.

Food was great!!! I had the BBQ ribs and they were fall off the bone tender. Mac & Cheese was cheesiest I have ever had. Sweet potatoe pie was silky smooth and service was great. I'm definitely going back cause the Smothered Pork Chops and the fried chicken looked delish.

Where do I start, yesterday we stopped at this location for the first time. My husband wasn't feeling too well, he sat while my daughter and I went in line to get food to go. We are use to eating at the other location which is another great experience however; this review is for this particular location. If you have eaten from this restaurant before you already know it is southern hospitality and food at its finest. As usual we were greeted kindly and the atmosphere was calm and soothing even though it was packed. After we got our meal we head back to where my husband was sitting waiting on us, he had this glow on his face and told me he was asked by the pastor that work there (possible owner not sure) if he needed a prayer, of course my husband said yes... Never thought he was about to receive a prayer right here and there where he was sitting. When my husband told me this I was wowed, and the look in his face said it all. Thank you pastor! For I didn't get to see you before we left to thanked you personally. We got more than great food and hospitality that evening.

Service is amazing. The staff is incredibly friendly. The chicken tastes really good and is hard to beat anywhere else. The mac n cheese is amazing. However other than the latter items i don't see much out of the food. It's a little over priced in my opinion. For a simple meal with an extra side of corn I paid around 15 bucks for not that much food. I'd come back, but it wouldn't be real high on my list.

i was so excited that they opened another location here down the street from my home, id been going 30 min. out the way to the other location on the west side of town. id come here once a week! the food and customer service is always great, every time just how i liked it! & every visit i order double mac & cheese & it would be gone in a heartbeat considering its so delicious! but for the past 3 weeks my food has been bland, tasteless chicken, cold collard greens & my mac & cheese was gooey, on my last visit, i've been disappointed, i brought it to my partners attention that maybe the original cook hasn't been in, she agreed i took to a manager, come to find out they let go of the head chef exactly 3 weeks ago!! no wonder why... needless to say potters house on atlantic is a clean environment, friendly staff, with now what i call "ok soul food" bring back the head chef!!! every time the food was on point but with the new chef, its like a hit or miss, one week its great, 2 days later dont count on it....

We have been to the original location before, so we were expecting the same awesome food. And this location did not disappoint. We went with a couple of our friends, and the four of us got a bunch of food to try. I decided to try their oxtail this time and OMG it was soooo delicious and such a huge portion as well. It's probably a good thing that we don't live so close of one of these locations or I probably will be there every other night and probably would not be quite so good for my health lol....

  • Chelle R.

It's soul food. I think that their mac & cheese is great, and I could make a meal from it, but the candied yams were just too sweet. The staff is pleasant and always asking you if you need a refill on your drink.

I am such a fan of the original Soul Food Bistro location in Murray Hill that I was excited to try the new location at Kernan and Atlantic. It's located in the former Old Charley's building next to the overpass at the edge of the Walmart parking lot. I came for a Friday lunch and the place was busy but there was plenty of seating. It's the same set-up as the original location - you are greeted warmly, then get in line to select your food cafeteria-style: one entree, 2 sides, cornbread or roll, then your dessert and drinks are additional. Everything looked good (especially the fried chicken) but it's hard for me to turn down my usual order of fried pork chops dipped in gravy (not the ones already smothered... I like my pork chops with some texture), yellow rice, collard greens (a tad saltier than the other place but still delicious), green beans, corn bread, and of course, sweet tea and a slice of red velvet cake (although my friend recommended the Key Lime Cake, not pie). My meal came to about $15. Lots of booth tables to choose from after you pay for your food and same as the original location, there is a section with moveable tables to fit larger groups. My friend and I received attentive and friendly service - our attendant Everett stopped to joke with us, refill our drinks (even putting our last refill directly in a to-go cup), and got my friend an extra side of gravy. The highlight of my trip was meeting Donovin Darius, former NFL/Jaguars player, who stopped in to have fried chicken wings. I can't remember what sides he ate, but I just remember thinking those fried chicken wings look so good I might have to try them next time! Delicious food, excellent service, clean and comfortable ambiance, and plenty of parking. I will definitely be back!

If you have been to the Potter's House on the Westside of Jacksonville, then you know exactly what to expect. If not, you are in for a treat. Slight differences, instead of getting on line, you put your name on a waiting list until your name is called. Then you wait in line. The line winds around like a Disney cue, but service is fast friendly and your wait is minimal. This place is probably half the size of the original but it has all the same food, the same service and the same huge portions. My favorites are the drumettes, smothered pork chops or the baked chicken. For side I like yams and the broccoli casserole (my fave) but everyone else at my table loved the collards and macaroni and cheese. I have never ever ever had enough room for dessert, so you are on your own there.

  • Jalene F.

The food is simply amazing and the staff and very friendly and accommodating! We were looking for good southern food and this exceeded expectations. The Mac and Cheese - I'm very picky on this, has to be real cheese.....it's absolutely amazing. The green beans are so flavorful. The yellow rice is good, fried chicken is above average the smothered pork chops are my favorite entree. You cant forget the dessert - the cakes are all very very moist and flavorful but the peach cobbler is the best!

Smothered pork chops, greens, and mac and cheese. Hands down the best soul food around, just make sure to bring your cholesterol meds and stretchy pants.

We're always on the lookout for some good, real, fried chicken and decided to try SFBII after reading a few reviews and looking at the pictures. I'm not sure if I just lucked out, will have to go back to know for sure, but that was the beast fried chicken breast I've had in a really long time. It was cooked perfectly and the seasoning was just right. Often the fried chicken we get tends to be on the salty side. The sides we're pretty good, the greens seemed a little fibrous but had good flavor, the corn bread was great if you prefer the sweet cakey kind, i.e. Jiffy brand, which I do when I'm eating salty food. Anyway, will definitely be back.

I was raised in the South and the food here is authentic and the real deal. It is also great! Today was my first visit and I chose the herb roasted chicken with mac'n cheese, field peas and collard greens as my sides. The meal also features 'slap ya' mama' cornbread and it lived up up its' name. Somehow we found room for a hunk of hummingbird card for dessert and it was also delicious. The menu is varied and the sides are many and I will keep coming back until I have tasted them all. Price for meat, two sides and cornbread start at $7.99. Throw in a $1.79 glass of tea and the deal is hard to beat. Staff is the nicest and friendliest you will find. If you enjoy real Southern food, check it out.

Ladies and Gents, get you some of this! Fried chicken, off the chain! Roasted chicken, moist, tasty and rivals the fried chicken! It's healthier also! The yams are unreal, I mean unreal! Cabbage, wow, best cabbage I've ever had. Seriously, I've been here 4 times and I have ordered the same thing every single time. Dessert, no need to order it because they give you one of the best pieces of corn bread you will ever eat. Please support the best soul food I have ever eaten. DId I mention the prices are phenomenal?

BEST SOUL FOOD IN JAX!!! There is honestly no contest! My family went on a Sunday expecting it to be packed. It was...however, the servers and hosts were super hospitable and got us set up quickly. With us having 4 boys under the age of 7 getting situated can be a task. Our waiter was super gracious and helpful. There was quite a long line, but I honestly didn't mind because it gave me time to wrestle with what I was going to order. Seriously, you will swear that EVERY side is your favorite! I ended up getting the fried chicken, yams, mac'n'cheese, and greens. My wife and I split an order of peach cobbler. The chicken was hot and fresh! The sides were full of flavor and well portioned. The cobbler was so good I could've sworn my grandmother was back in the kitchen throwing down. Make sure that you give yourself time for a good Sunday afternoon nap afterward...each meal comes with a side of the "itis". My only complaint is that this location is so close to my house...the temptation is strong! If you're looking for the best soul food in Jax you know where to go...Potters House Soulfood Bistro!

Timing was not good. Arrived 20 minutes before closing. Happy greeting. Then got to the line. We chose fried chicken and the smothered pork chops. The lady serving really had a displeasing 'tude going. I asked for fries and was told No! Kitchen not making any more, we close in 20 minutes. Chose to have collards and broccoli. Wifey had collards and carrots. Collards are AWESOME!!!! Some of the best I've ever had. The other vegetables were so overcooked they were almost mush. Coconut cake as the finisher was very tasty. Not as sweet as many but so full of flavor. Everyone off the staff but one were warm and charming. I was asked by the chairs so nicely about my age so she could afford us a senior discount. Great to have it fine with offending. I would come back but not so late in the day and hopefully on the day that 'tude lady is off.

Great spot! Casual, cafeteria style soul food. Everyone loved the food. I got herb roasted chicken that was unbelievable. For sides, I got cornbread, Mac and cheese (amazing) and green beans. My only complaint was that the vegetables weren't fresh. Will definitely be back!

Stop here for Soul Food! As the name indicates, this location near the Kernan overpass is the second installation of the West Jax classic, and though I've yet to make it to the original location, I was very pleased (and stuffed!) after visiting this one. Soul Food Bistro is cafeteria style, so be prepared to grab a tray and wait in line. (And there will be a line!) Choose from family style spreads, or feasts for one with meat choices of Fried Chicken, Roast Chicken, Smothered Pork Chops, Tilapia and more. I went with a friend and we decided to split everything, so I went roasted and she went fried. They have all the sides you'd expect from collards to carrots to mac n cheese. You get two with each meal, so we selected four different ones to split. (Field Peas, Mac, Carrots, and String Beans) We also threw in some crispy, melty peach cobbler just to torture ourselves. Everything was fabulous! Though I enjoyed the roast chicken, I'm definitely going fried next time. Despite it's popularity, really good fried chicken is no easy feat. It gets burnt, soggy, or dry so easily, but Soul Food Bistro clearly knows what they're doing. A beautiful layer of crispy skin encased a delectably juicy chicken breast that was piping hot from the first bite. All the sides were delicious and seasoned perfectly. The string beans were probably my least favorite, but I'd definitely get the other three again. You can choose cornbread or a dinner roll with your meal and, while I LOVE a good yeast roll, I'd highly recommend going cornbread here. It was golden, buttery, and so bad! (in a good way) In fact, that sums up everything about SFB. This is not the place to stick to your diet, but the cheat is oh, so worth it. You can really throw your waistline to the wind and get your fried chicken smothered (aka dunked!) in gravy as well. Whoa! All in all, this place is awesome. I'm so glad Yelp led me to this butter-filled oasis, and I can't wait to visit the original location on the Westside.

We went here for our Easter Lunch. The food was outstanding and the service was out of this world. It was extremely busy and the staff was calm and kept the line moving. Even though we Live in Green Cove Springs we will definitely be going back to this restaurant. Worth the drive. BTW- the prices are low for the amount of food they put on your plate.

The family and I visited the Lenox Ave location a few days ago. The food was great there. It's great here as well. The decor here is to be honest, much better than the other location. It has a classier feel to it. It's almost like an upscale soul food restaurant! It was reminscent of Red Lobster in a way.I had the herb roasted chicken with oxtail rice and cabbage, and their signature cornbread. Delicious as expected. The only drawback is that it's really far from home for us. But I would definitely say it was worth the drive in my opinion. The staff here are a little friendlier than the Lenox Ave location. I'm not saying that the Lenox Ave staff is rude or anything like that. Far from it. Just felt a little more welcomed here is all. Overall, I was very pleased with my experience and will be back. One more thing I think their business would skyrocket if they made their service a buffet! I can't get enough of their food, and would love to see the Lenox Ave location become a buffet as well. Like I stated in my review for the Lenox Ave location, I really truly hope they will give the buffet suggestion some SERIOUS thought because you just can't get enough of food like that!

I would have to rate this place a four star meal. It's a cafeteria style restaurant. Grab a tray and pick what foods you want. The fried chicken is seasoned perfectly and juicy. All the sides I tried where delicious. All though the food is well prepared, I don't understand the waiter concept. I brought my own food to the table and seated myself. A waiter asked what we would like to drink. I suppose there supposed to be tipped since he showed the wad of money in his pocket. We received our drinks but was an after thought after the polite greeting. I hope I'm not a scrooge if I really don't feel like tipping someone for filling my drink once and disappearing. If it wasn't for that, I would have rated it a 5 star.

The food here is absolutely amazing. I felt right at home! Don't be intimidated by the cafeteria look and layout.. This food is made and tastes like they made a whole batch just for my plate! Outstanding service as well: the staff took time to explain the menu items and specials. Definitely coming back!

Compared to the one off of Lenox, the feel is more restaurant than cafeteria. Possibly, because the restaurant is an actual building and not part of a strip mall. Aside from the safer location, the food is just as good at this location. I got the chicken tenders and they are just as great as the fried chicken! The customer service is superb as the original location. I went on a Friday and was so excited for the mashed potatoes. Unfortunately, they did not have any made that day! I got fresh french fries instead. No matter what location you go to, you will be full from the serving sizes. I did not think I was going to get full from the tenders, but I did! Again, this is a great location to take tourist and people from out of town. They never serve old food and it taste homemade, southern style!

I don't usually eat pork but I am sucker for smothered pork chops and let me tell you, Soul Food Bistro II does them right! Their collards are delicious and I love their sweet sweet tea. I've always been satisfied when eating here and will def recommend their great southern soul food!

Great food, great service, great prices. Working my way through the sides, but the collards, Mac and cheese, and candied yams are all delicious. Smothered Pork chops are very tasty, and the ribs are just fall off the bone delicious. Leave your diet plan at home! Haven't made it to dessert yet, portions are huge! Good stuff.

It was a Sunday, and I was hoping for some fried chicken livers, but that is the one day when they aren't available. Sooooo...I opted for the smothered pork chops with rice and gravy instead. YUM! Had mac n cheese and cabbage as well. All super tasty and fresh. The cornbread is delicious. My husband had the chops as well, but with their killer greens and candied sweet potatoes. My daughter had the fried shrimp, which was probably the best I've tasted in many many years, along with field peas. Everything I tasted was top notch. We were all full, happy, and excited to visit again. Need to plan on a day for those livers...

I can't praise this place enough. From the moment we walked in we were greeted with kindness. It was our first time in and the employee at the front gave us the run down on how things went. It's a cafeteria style set up so you go and get a tray and pick what you want. The people behind the food were so sweet and made us instantly feel welcome. As though we were in their home and it was time for a family meal. At the check out one of the other employees who made rounds on the floor came up and helped our younger children with their trays and guided us to a table. THe food...let's talk about that for a minute. I do not generally eat friend chicken...I mean EVER. My husband went to the Lenox location and raved about it so we went to the new one by our home. I will never be able to express how good that fried chicken was. It was crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. The sides were tasty and the peach cobbler rounded out our meal. There was nothing that any of us had that we did not enjoy and wish we had more of.

I created this account just to give Potter House a review. The food is amazing! The service is so welcoming and warm. The first time you go, the only conversation you will have will be about how good the food is, that is after you ate everything on your plate because it is too good to talk!

AMAZING FOOD. Everyone who works here is so sweet, and the food is stellar. I got the fried chicken (dark meat) with Mac and Cheese and broccoli as my sides. The chicken was tender and fell off the bone, and the breeding was light but deliciously crispy. The macaroni was arguably the best I have ever had...so cheesy and delicious. A generous helping, too! The broccoli was perfectly steamed and well-seasoned. I'm not a fan of cornbread but my boyfriend said it was fantastic. I topped it all off with true southern sweet tea. Prices were great for the amount and quality of food - two of us ate for less than 20 bucks and I couldn't even finish. A MUST TRY for anyone in the area - my half hour trip was totally worth it!

Let's me start by saying this restaurant and location is the best!! Love the food , staff atmosphere! The other location I don't like because they aren't ever open when the other location is open . I've been five times to the Lenix location and have yet been able to ever catch them open . Plus very hard to find in the parking lot . I once entered the church then when I finally found it nope they'd just closed for the night They close early on Sunday , Wednesday and its extremely frustrating so I'm done trying to go to that location. The southside location is amazing always open when they post they're open . Can you tell I'm pissed . Please don't hold that against the restaurant.

Today's visit @ 12:15n two ... Very disappointed and looking like bcuz I invited a coWorker. I talked sooo good about SFB, judging from my previous 5 visits (1 Dine in, 4-to- go) Oxtail dinner: Oxtails were just ok...they weren't tender nor were they BURSTING with flavor. The MacNCheese was beyond (SALTY) and overly clumped with cheese and the Mash potatoes w/gravy were also SALTY and they were dry...and they were skimp on the yellow rice...SMH... The Crab salad, not creamy enough and for the price $3.25 and the small container, they could atleast use real crab... BUT the yams are ALWAYS onPoint!!! $14.99+Tax isn't cheap... In addition, I got a fried chicken dinner to go 8.99+Tax...got home, chicken drummetts and flats were under-cooked, my Husband had to finish cooking it in the oven... My Coworker said it was good but not great and her food was too salty and too pricey(Oxtail dinner with greens and mash potatoes). She also ordered rib and chicken dinners to go as well for the Fam... I would go back bcuz now I need redemption of my previous visits... Plus I Oxtails...

This place was amazing. We went on a Sunday at 1pm (probably the busiest time to go), but it didn't take long for us to go through the line. I love the buffet type set up they have, so you see your food before you order it. It was might cheat meal, so I ordered the fried chicken, mac n cheese and mashed potatoes. It was all absolutely delicious. The customer service was also great. You're greeted when you walk in the door and the before you get on the actual food line. Even the cashiers were extremely friendly. As we ate, we were approached several times about the quality of our meal, and given refills. All in all, it was a great experience and when I'm back in Jacksonville, I will be returning.

Do y'all want Southern cuisine? Then bring y'alls booties over here! Every time I go out of the country, I always come back to the USA wanting FRIED CHICKEN. I made the mistake of going to a fast-food chicken place and I regretted it. This time, now that this restaurant is in my 'hood, I finally got to satisfy my fried chicken craving. Their fried chicken is the real deal!!! The bomb-diggity!! Like, foreals, finger-licking good fried a$$ chicken. GET AT IT!!! The sides... you can't go wrong with the mac-n-cheese, collard greens, butter beans, and cornbread! The dessert... shut the front door! Good ol' cobbler. Get at it! Go, go, go! #MERICA!!!

Absolutely yummy!!! Yes it's cafeteria style but it doesn't take away from the amazing food you will soon enjoy! I tried the smothered pork chops as recommended in previous post---amazing!!! I was in town for a wedding and this was my first stop after checking into my hotel...I came here because of all of the great reviews. Must try if you're ever in town.

If you sold your soul at the crossroads you find a better replacement here at this place. Today I had fried chicken, cabbage and lama beans. Outside of Hip-hop Chicken, it's probably the best fried chicken in town. The cabbage was flavorful, and the lama were perfect. My prior visit I had the ox tail and yeah, it's awesone.

You never forget your first Potter's experience. Mine was at the original location, but when a friend suggested the new spot for lunch, how was I to say no? The newest Potter's location is big, bright and airy, and easy to find. Walk in and peep the menu board, and get ready to make your selections. This is cafeteria style, and someone will usually ask if it's your first time in, to walk you through the ordering process. And then, get ready for some food. Your dinner gets you a gigantic plate full! I went with the ox-tails this time, which came with rice, and selected mac and cheese and collards for my sides. Mac and cheese was exactly how I remembered it, so good! And the collards, still my favorite collards in town. Just delicious and filled with flavor. (It's the meat in there... so if you are a vegan or vegetarian, you will need to steer clear.) The oxtails were plentiful and had a good flavor. While I usually prefer them in curry and a bit spicy, these were still great, meaty, and tender. There will be someone coming around to check on you as well, to make sure you food is good and your drinks are filled. Our server was awesome, and even made sure we had a couple of drinks to go. And when you go, your belly will be bustin' with amazing soul food... so you might need to take a big nap.

I've heard so much about the Soul Food Bistro 'family' and I finally had an opportunity to try it with some fellow Yelpers when we were taking over the city. I wasn't too hungry when I showed up, but I knew I wanted to dive in to some of the mac & cheese. It's a buffet/cafeteria style set up but with options you may not find on your typical buffet. On this visit I went with the fried shrimp with mac & cheese and oxtail rice. While the fried shrimp were a bit of a let down the oxtail rice and mac & cheese knocked it out of the park. The mac & cheese lived up to every expectation I had from other Yelpers telling me about it. So cheesy & creamy, but not too saucy. Well cooked noodles and not overly soggy or dry from having sat in the serving pan. Excellent. I could have easily eaten a whole plate of the oxtail rice alone. The meat was so tender. It was packed with flavor and the rice was cooked just right. I hope this wasn't a special side and is there the next time we go in because I'm definitely getting more of that.

I'm a huge fan of Potters, however my last visit was merely okay. There was an old asian couple ahead of me in line and the lady serving the food was being incredibly rude. I couldn't help but to feel slightly offended. She was yelling and talking in a mock-asian accent. It was really bothering me, but I wouldn't let her ignorance ruin my meal. I ordered the mac n cheese, collard greens, and smothered pork chops. The pork was dry as it usually is but the rest of the meal was great. Make sure you tip the cashier well if you dine in, as you will have a server that gets that tip. It's good. "Hands down best soul food in Jacksonville!!!" - no it's not. However, it's good.. wish the people behind the counter weren't so racist against asians.. I mean.. come on.. it's 2015.. tsk tsk.

The best soul food restaurant in Jacksonville Buffet line style Recommendations: Great smothered pork chops Mac and cheese The BEST cornbread Oxtail rice The food is consistent at both locations except for the red velvet cake Good portions Good prices The desserts are a bit overpriced! Turkey wings on Sunday's Different specials every day The staff is nicer and it's less busy at this location I recommend :)

Hefty portions. I usually only take a trip for the oxtails, although the chicken wings and smothered pork chops are good too. The oxtails are a little pricey now. I remember when an oxtail tray was $12.99, now you're paying nearly $16 a plate (with tax). But hey, I'll pay for it lol Gotta have my sticky oxtail fix. The location on Atlantic is very nice. The workers are extremely polite. Nice, musical ambiance. It's very busy, but I'm in and out in no time. I wouldn't recommend going to either location on a Sunday!

Best Mac n cheese in jax! I come here for the southern food and it never disappoints! The fried chicken is great and so are the collards. I always grab a slice of the lime frosted cake. Sweet cornbread and tea too. Yum!
