Great place for a budget friendly meal! The only thing better than the food was the true Southern hospitality. Finding a dining establishment that serves great food at affordable prices while also making you feel at home is a rare now days. I suggest requesting a young man by the name of Zach to be your server upon your next visit!

I was craving BBQ and I wanted something I knew would melt in my mouth. I typically wouldn't drive across town, but I wanted to get out of the house, so Sonny's was worth the drive. I didn't go in, I just drove through, so I can't comment on the atmosphere. However, the girl working the window was very pleasant. I ordered the beef brisket dinner and if I could have teleported home, it would have been perfect. The dinner came with two sides and two pieces of garlic bread. I also ordered a sweet tea, which was just how I liked it - extra sweet. For my sidekicks, as Sonny's calls them, I ordered fries and fried okra. The fries weren't anything special. The okra were tasty, and surprisingly not that soft after the drive home. Now the main attraction: the brisket. It was tender, smoky, juicy, and oh-so-tasty. It melted in my mouth. I didn't even have to add any of the mustard or sweet sauce that I asked for. The flavor they cooked into it was more than enough. I loved it. My puppy loved it too; at least the little piece that I gave her when I was finished. I would definitely drive back.

This is the first time we stopped at Sonny's in a few years. We don't have one that is convenient to where we live. So we took the opportunity while we were in the area to stop at this one. There are a lot of choices for BBQ in Jacksonville, and I don't think that Sonny's can compete anymore. Almost all the other BBQ places will serve you better BBQ for less money than we had. The ribs were obviously not slow-cooked, or fall off the bone. There was very little smoked taste and it seemed that it was just fast cooked over an open flame. The sides were good, but our order took a long time in coming. We had eaten at Bono's just a few weeks ago, and these two just cannot compare any more. Bono's served better BBQ in greater quantity than Sonny's, and Bono's prices and service are much better. This will be our last time at Sonny's.

I have to say I was disappointed with the food and this was not the first time I have eaten here. I am glad they do not boast that their ribs fall off the bone. I had the rib dinner and the meat was clinging to the bone in fear. They tasted like they were reheated in the microwave rather than made fresh that day. They did not have much taste. I ended up putting them in the oven for more than 30 minutes and then they were tender and separated from the bone easily. The baked beans did not have a good flavor. The sauce tasted like it had to much vinegar and barbecue sauce. The cornbread was not warm. I believe it was also not made fresh. If I had been dining in, I would have sent the food back. It seems like they are offering fast food at restaurant pricing.

The service was warm and welcoming. However ribs were old and dry, as if they had been sitting out for days. I wouldnt call it ribs it was more like jerky. I liked their fried catfish, corn nuggets, mac and cheese and fried okra. But if i had a choice i don't think i would ever come here for BBQ. What makes it even worse was that a male server was playing around in the back near the fridge and fountain drinks was SPITTING on the floor. He was SNAKING his water on the ground in the establishment. DISGUSTING. YES I SAW YOU AND YES I SAW YOU HIDE AND TELL YOUR CO-WORKER.. NASTY..

I pass by this place multiple times a week and I've been interested to see what quality of barbecue they serve. So, I decided to finally stop in and try the ribs. I cashed in on the lunch special which was available on the weekend! For about $9 I got four sweet and smokey ribs, macaroni and cheese, baked beans and cornbread. Not bad. The ribs were actually quite tasty but certainly not tender and nowhere near "falling off the bone". In fact, the meat was unfortunately a little firm. The beans however, were absolutely delicious. If you're a sweet baked beans lover, you'll love this side order. The mac 'n cheese was forgettable. Overall, Sonny's has great flavor on their ribs but a little tenderness on the bone is needed!

Excellent barbeque even for a chain. Reasonably priced clean and fast courteous service. We took advantage of a VIP Mother's Day special on baby back ribs and were very pleased. Fresh salad bar available and delectable banana pudding. Definitely a great choice. And fresh sweet tea.

I finally allowed a local friend to talk me into trying out Sonny's; I was against it since another friend from the mid~west out here didn't recommend it, I'd actually like to give it 2.5 stars but since I can't 3 for fast/friendly service via the drive through. I opted for the the sampler: smoked pork, beef brisket, chicken and ribs (sweet & smokey), two sides: tater salad & baked beans, garlic bread & sweet tea. Let's go! Smoked pork: I didn't detect much of a smokey flavor here; however, it was tender although somewhat fatty, Ribs: not fall off the bone tender as described on the web site, a hint of smokey flavor detected, one particular bone was entirely too tough and I like "burnt ends", brisket: tender with a good flavor to it, made a great sandwich for lunch, Chicken: nothing special noted, the leg was hard and dry, tater salad: I love a good potato salad, this was lacking/missing something...flavor? it didn't tickle the taste buds, beans: a can of Bush's much better! tea: a winner, ding ding!

Solid BBQ. The brisket was very tender and decent bark. Spicy bbq sauce was great. The ribs were very tender but a little on dry side. Expectations were a little higher because it was my first bbq joint on the easy coast. I like to bbq myself so maybe I'm a tough critic. Overall good value and satisfactory food. Probably not gonna rave about it to friends back home.

Omg! Love love love Sonny's! We came here last year for our vacation and came back again... because it's that good! We usually eat so much that we make ourselves sick lol, but we wouldn't change it for the world! I suggest Sonny's Sampler. That's my all time favorite! You get the best of many worlds... smoked pork, beef brisket, bbq chicken and ribs with your choice of 2 sides. Also, get the cornbread!! Yummm! I'm hungry again. The service is pretty good. The waitress was very patient with us, as a few of my friends didn't know what to get. I highly recommend! I will be returning again on my next trip to Jacksonville.

One of the worst restaurant experiences in Florida so far! We just moved here a few weeks ago and decided to try this place out for the BBQ. We ordered lunch plates on their lunch menu which read that they were $7.99, when we went to pay after our meal, we were charged different prices. The cashier said "oh yeah our prices changed but we haven't changed the menus". Uhhh don't you think you would want to give your customers correct information before they order?? On top of that, our waitress was very rude and made ridiculous comments to my husband being on his phone. She also gave us the death stare when we asked to split the check on two cards since we were with our friends and said that she would need to get a manager involved to do so. Funny thing is, a manager never got involved and the cashier was able to split the check. Just overall, a very bad experience.

Sonnys is my favorite barbecue spot. It's one of the few things I miss about living in the south. Their sweet sauce is divine, the portions are plenty and the meat (pork at least) is always tender. Good food for cheap and service with a smile

My husband and I were in the mood for barbecue, and didn't want to spend a fortune as we often do at 4Rivers, etc. We decided to give Sonny's a try, as we had never been and were in the area. We were sat right away and our waitress was very friendly. The atmosphere, however, left a lot to be desired. Old and dingy, it definitely needs some updating. We ordered some appetizers, which were delicious. I highly recommend the corn nuggets and their egg rolls. If I were to ever go back, this is all I would order. For dinner, I got the pulled pork, ribs and brisket platter, along with 2 sides. The pork and brisket were okay, but not very flavorful. The ribs were super tough, and pretty much inedible. As for the sides, I got Mac and cheese and a baked potato. I've never had bad Mac and cheese in my life.. Until then. I couldn't eat it. It had a very weird taste, but I'm not one to complain, so it just sat there. My husband ordered the Gone fishin' platter and the catfish was super dry and bland. The shrimp were okay, but overall the dish lacked flavor. And the cornbread left a lot to be desired. Overall, it felt like a meal we could have gotten at Golden Corral. And had it been that cheap, it would have been fine. Our bill came out to just under $50. Which is more than we were looking to spend, especially for mediocre food. Needless to say, we weren't pleased and won't be back.

So in all my years living in Florida I have never been to a BBQ pit. I know, for shame, right? Well, it's just never been on my to do list. Even my boyfriend, who is one of the pickiest eaters I know has at least had their pulled pork sandwiches. Today, he surprised me with an impromptu lunch date here. He tends to do that a lot. Plus, he had been craving some pulled pork the last few days, so he needed so satiate his persnickety palate. Our server, Stevie, a sweet young lady with a personable demeanor, smiling and polite, took us to our table quickly since it wasn't very busy when we went. I perused the menu to see what would catch my eye and make me hungry and I came across their Sonny's Annual Pitmaster Showdown menu exhibiting three finalist sandwiches where only one would be a permanent menu item winner after voting ends. Of the three is chose the Triple Threat. The Triple Threat sandwich was smoked turkey, pulled chicken, crispy bacon and cheese with lettuce, tomato, red onion and pickles with a tangy sauce on it stacked tall between two delicious slices of bun. I chose to order just the sandwich because it was already $7.99 alone. I really didn't feel that paying an extra $2 for the big deal was worth it since I really wasn't in the mood for anything else. The boyfriend chose the pulled pork sandwich big deal with fries and an extra side of cornbread. I told him he had better share. We didn't wait very long for our food. And my sandwich tasted fresh and warm. It was HUGE, though and I seriously considered using a fork and knife to eat it. My mouth isn't THAT big. I mean, c'mon man, when you order a sandwich that needs to be held together by a big toothpick, that's a pretty big sandwich. LOL. The bacon was crispy and cooked to perfection. My smoked turkey was yummy and blended in perfect with my pulled chicken. The chicken was moist and delicious. Seasoning was amazing. As I tried to devour my sandwich it fell apart somewhat. As pieces of chicken and red onion fell from it my boyfriend simply stated, "Can't take you anywhere" and we shared a good laugh. The cornbread was moist and felt thick, almost like the way peanut butter sticks to the roof of your mouth and it was perfectly warm and sweet. Highly recommend it if you like cornbread. I will be going back to try some other things on the menu that I saw, because now I know why people get so addicted to it. I enjoyed the service, the food was good, and the prices were pretty decent for the servings being so huge. So you should probably try it out if you haven't been. You might not be disappointed.

Last Thursday I had the opportunity to attend a food blogging event at Sonny's Real Pit BBQ off of Atlantic Blvd. To be honest, I hadn't been to a Sonny's in at least 15yrs. The last time I was there I wasn't that pleased. I remember it was dirty and the food was just too sweet. So I jumped at a chance to try Sonny's after a long sabbatical. Everyone deserves a second chance right? Let me throw this disclaimer out there. While I can't be bribed to give a good review, I can be coaxed by free food to come out and try your food. Just because you are feeding me, it doesn't guarantee I will say nice things. Check out jaxfoodcritic.com for the video and pictures along with other reviews. They started us out with some Corn Nuggets and Fried Okra (it's the south right?) If you like creamed corn, you will probably like the Corn Nuggets. I'm not a fan of the sweet food until it's time for dessert. I know, I know...looking at me, you can see I'm fat and think "no way does he wait to eat sweets until later". Get off my back! Don't judge me! HaHa, just kidding, judge away. While the corn nuggets aren't necessarily my thing, I can definitely see how a lot of people like them. Now, on to the Fried Okra. It was great. It had a nice crisp coating, you know how it has to be done just right because the inside is usually slimy. They got it right. Hot and crisp. The ranch dip was good too. For some reason I tend to like my ranch a tad on the thin side. Does that mean it's cheap? **Gasp** Do I like cheap ranch dressing?!?! Next, they brought out some dry rubbed chicken wings. I had no idea until very recently that they even offered chicken wings. It's a good idea they did because they were awesome. The rub wasn't sweet, very spicy actually, and they were done nice and crispy. I hate undercooked chicken. I recommend trying them as a wing option. Once we finished up with that, they brought out some rib samples. They brought the baby backs, some sweet and smokey ribs and their classic dry rub ribs. I tried one of the sweet ribs and they were pretty good. I'm more of a mustard based BBQ sauce guy. But if sweet is your thing, try these. Now, the dry rub ribs (say that 10 times...fast) were very good. The ribs are big and meaty, probably the biggest I have had lately. I have tried Bono's and Woody's and these are the biggest and meatiest. These are now my favorite, I just wish they had mustard sauce to dip them in The last main course that we got to try was the pulled chicken, pork and brisket. These are all coated in their signature sweet BBQ sauce. It was pretty good, but the sauce just isn't my thing. Everyone else loved it. The final thing I got to try was the Fruit Cobbler with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Good lord, that was good. The cobbler was nice and warm with a nice sugar crust on top and then the cold ice cream. It was REALLY good! I think I will have to bring the wife in to try it, it was that good. Make sure you end your meal with this, you won't regret it. Extra Info: While sweet BBQ sauces aren't my thing, there were plenty of other options for people like me. So go give it a try, I was very pleased with the quality of the food and portion sizes. Just writing about the freaking cobbler makes me hungry again. The hazard of writing reviews sometimes. The Good: -Lots of options -Nice portion sizes -Friendly staff The Bad: -All BBQ sauces are sweet (personal preference) -The salad bar wasn't very clean -My wife ate my leftovers (meanie)

This is the closest BBQ place to our house and we have become a fan over the years. Love that they have drive-thru & offer corn bread instead of garlic toast. I've never gotten a bad order and when we use drive-thru I've never gotten home to find a wrong order or missing items in the bag. THe sweet tea is delish, too. Our fave is the shredded chicken.

Came to Jacksonville with the boyfriend & his fam to take care of some stuff (they relocated to Cali 3 years ago). Apparently, the boyfriend loves this joint so we had to go here before we left. Met up with one of his friends and his friend's girl.. Atmosphere was cool. The workers were nice. We had the "feast for four" which stuffed all four of us. Mac n cheese, mashed potatoes, fries, corn bread, four different meats: sliced pork, pulled pork, chicken, and ribs.. In my opinion, the food was DELICIOUS! I would come back.. Great prices, great quality, overall outstanding service! :) Can't wait to come back!

I didn't eat here though I have eaten at many other Sonnys in the past. I entered on a rainy Sunday late afternoon. No one greeted me so I went to the ladies room- not a pleasant experience: papers on the floor, soap and water all over the sink , no paper towels available without dismantling the dispenser, and the ladies product disposal bins were in my face when I sat down- ugh. When I returned to the entry, I told the manager of the restroom problems and asked to be seated. I was shown to a dirty table. I picked my menu up and moved to another booth- it had a clean table but the seats and floor were littered with food. Strike three- I'm out of there. So, the food may be good- I don't know. But until the operational stuff is addressed, I won't be back.
