My mom works very close to Salsas and we checked it out for lunch recently. The easiest way to describe it is as a wannabe La Nop. The place itself is nice, high backs to the booths, lots of seating, etc. We were seated right away even though it was lunch time and pretty busy. Our waiter was very nice but didn't seem to speak much English (to the point where I was concerned our orders would be wrong). My mom ordered the crunchy chicken tacos lunch special, I got the shrimp quesadilla lunch special. My mom was disappointed when her tacos arrived with literally just chicken in the shell and beans and salsa on the side (that's it). My quesadilla, on the other hand, came with rice, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. It seemed a little backwards since a quesadilla is already closed up and hard to add toppings into, no? My quesadilla was very good, not a ton to it (shrimp, peppers, onions, and whatever seasonings they use) but tasty. The serving size was a little more than I could finish but good for the price (the total per tip was around $15 for both of us). Not a bad option for a quick, tasty bite.

Arrived at 2 pm on a weekend and was seated right away. Friendly staff took our drink order and a few minutes later our food order. Most mex restaurants are fairly quick but the food came out slowly and out of order. When it arrived by two staff, the waitress was not present to direct the order to the correct customer so we ended up redirecting the hot plates to one another. The enchiladas were overly greasy and the rice was bland. The salsa was excellent and fresh. A good thing considering the name of the place. Chile Relleno was small a bit greasy but had good flavor. Second time will be the last. Lots of better choices in Jax.

Terrible service! Worse I've ever had. I had to actually get up to get my food. The food was also not very fresh and had a bad taste to it. Improper seasoned and frozen food!

When it comes to Mexican food, I think I'm a little hard to please. I'm not an expert in Mexican cuisine. I just know what I like. I grew up in Orange Park, so the La Nop on Kingsley will quite possibly always hold a place near and dear to my heart. The original La Nop in the tiny, quaint location. (I wish they would have kept it open.) I've also had some of the best Mexican food traveling. It's hard to beat Mexican from Mexico and Texas. Just saying.. This place is about two minutes from my house and recently opened, so I decided to stop in. (The San Jose La Nop just doesn't do it for me...) The staff seemed a little swamped, but they were quick to seat me. Though, once they seated me -- I didn't see them very often after that. We ordered cheese dip, steak tacos, chicken tostadas, and quesadillas for my son. The steak taco was the best part of my meal. The steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned, but the rest of my meal was pretty bland. The cheese dip tasted watered down, which is pretty gross. The salsa needed salt. The chicken needed something. The rice needed more seasoning. And the beans weren't good. Overall, my meal was pretty upsetting. I ended up paying around $40, which isn't bad for a meal. But at La Nop, I can eat like a king for close to $25 with a tip. Needless to say, I don't think I'll be returning to Salsas unless I want a single steak taco.

Horrible horrible experience. Dined this past Sunday. We have frequented the Salsas on Beach blvd. Thinking it would be similar, we decided to try it out now that we have moved to this side of town. Guess it will be our first and last time here. Service was fast... but almost too fast. As soon as the waitress was explaining that the plates were not, she dropped my burrito loco on my lap. Scalding hot queso all over my leg and shorts. Awesome. To top it off I found a chicken bone in my burrito. Waitress kept apologizing and explained that she had never done such a thing before (in her 2 weeks of waitressing, lol). I understand that mistakes happen but she didn't even suggest offering a discount or removing the item from our bill. We will not be returning.

I came here with some friends not really expecting much, the reviews weren't great, and to me seems like every other cheesy Mexican restaurant, but i was feeling some nachos and I always like to try places I have never been to before so in we went. It is decorated brightly with paintings, we were seated quickly, our server could really barely speak english ( which I like! good sign) We got a bunch of things fajitas, taco salad, sampler app plate, and a steak....I have to say no one was complaining about their food....we were all happily chowing away....I got the sampler app plate and it was huge....shredded chicken nachos, cheese quesadilla, 2 fried beef chimichangas?, and a nice scoop of guac, sour cream, and pico on lettuce....it was way more then enough for one person, i ate some and the guys finished it.... Pretty good, not the best Mexican but good stuff.

Okay, I have to come clean, I did not mean to come to this restaurant. I was taking my kids to a new place for lunch, and while Yelp said "open", the actual restaurant was closed on Sundays. Oh well, what to do? Yes, go next doora nd try Salsa's Mexican Restuarant. When we walked in, I was skeptical, was this another La Nopalera knock off, or something original and tasty like Senor Fresh Mex? Well guess what, it was not a knock off and while it was not quite as good as SFM, it certainly is not somewhere you should avoid. My actual rating of the food was 3 stars, but I found a silver lining, they serve their lunch menu on Sunday. Now who does that anymore? Every where I eat on Sundays, with few exceptions, does not serve the lunch menu past week days. So Salsa's gets an extra star for serving a lunch menu on weekends. Now onto the food. My son had the Super Lunch, a dish he would learn to call "the Sampler" because it had a number of differnt mexican dishes on it, plus he fell in love with the sweet tea, which is usually not a strong point of any Mexican menu. My youngest got the Kid's Buritto and was completely satisfied and full. Not an extensive kids menu, but for her, it was perfect. I decided on the chicken fajitas and was glad I did, lots of onions, peppers and chicken, along with rice and beans. A few misses here and there. When I asked for a tiny cup of guacamole for my daughter, the waiter brought out a small bowl and charged $3.99. I understand the need to charge, but it seemed much too expensive for what was delivered. Also the kids plate did not come with beans and rice, only rice. Okay, that is just a preference, but not biggie. Service was good and the server made appropriate suggestions when asked. The decor is interesting and kind of "cheesy" in a very fun way. While I would not run to this restaurant, I would walk their when I am in the neighborhood.

Salsas is so good! First of all, they have a completely adorable interior. I love the bright colors, and the booths. Very Cozy. Service is VERY fast. I get the cheese quesadilla and its completely amazing. Fiance gets the fish tacos and they are really good too. This is a fun and easy, not to mention cheap place to have a fun dinner. Lots of tvs and a cute bar. Also you really can't beat the convenience to 95 that this place offers. Also right next to the Movie theatre, which is perfect for dates!

I walked into this restaurant and I loved the gorgeous paintings on the wall and the craftsmanship around the bar area and on all the booth ends. Our service was quick, delightful, and fast and the food was inexpensive. We ordered the Mexican guacamole dip which was chunky, instead of the typical blended guacamole, and I loved it. We had steak fajitas and the "pick two" platter (we picked a pork tamale and a chicken enchilada with rice and beans) from the lunch menu and both meals were very good.

I love Salsas. They don't use the heavy lard that La Nop does. Their chicken tacos are great especially on Tuesdays where Tacos are $1. Their Cheese dip is real and the guac is fresh.Decide for yourself and come by for a superb Margarita!

The following review was published under my byline in the Florida Times-Union on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014. This is an original, unabridged version of that review. More than six months after Speckled Hen Tavern & Grille flew the coop near The Avenues Mall, Salsas Mexican Restaurant has repainted the proverbial henhouse to debut its second Northeast Florida outlet. In November, the small Ormond Beach-based fast-casual chain expanded from a single Jacksonville store in the busy Beach-and-Hodges corridor to a restaurant-heavy strip center on Philips Highway, just north of Regal The Avenues Stadium 20 theater. Salsas offers an extensive menu of enchiladas, burritos, fajitas, do-it-yourself combos and specialty plates for lunch and dinner, as well as seven signature margaritas and a full bar. If you've dined at another local Mexican chain, whose name rhymes with "jaw drop," you'll probably spot a few similarities on this menu. What sets Salsas apart, aside from an arguably brighter color scheme inside, is the sophistication and variety of its higher-end dinner plates ($6.75 to $20.99). You'll find numerous steak and seafood selections, including T-bone steaks and ceviche, along with the traditional favorites my wife and I sampled. Otherwise, Salsas plays a familiar fast-casual hand: no frills, automatic chips and salsa delivery and, at least on our visit, very fast service. While the top-shelf behemoth 60-ounce Margarita Grande ($24) beckoned, I avoided the super-sized temptation with the Hornitos Margarita (my regular was $6.50; jumbos are $8.50, pitchers $20.99). This tasty twist on the traditional Mexican cocktail boasts Triple Sec and cranberry juice for added tang. The Quesadilla Salsas ($11.95) means business, and you need a fork and knife to respectfully conduct it. Otherwise the melty combination of shrimp, beef, chicken, mushrooms and cheese would spill out like molten magma from the flour tortilla. It's competent in the flavor department and more than enough for two, with the requisite refried beans, rice and guacamole salad. My wife opted for the Fajita Salsas (for one; $13.25) with steak, chicken and shrimp. In a nod to her gluten-intolerance they offered her corn tortillas in lieu of flour. This almost made up for a previous ding, unfortunately frequent in Mexican restaurants--Salsas cooks their tabletop tortilla chips in a common fryer, a no-no for gluten watchers. The skillet meats were well seasoned with spicy steak and larger-than-expected shrimp, and an overall air of freshness. Salsas offers five desserts ($2.25 to $3.99), which include Mex standbys such as sopapilla and churros; we opted for the flan ($3.25). The custard was less dense and more flaky and egg-like in an easily sharable portion that did its job with little fanfare. As mentioned before, service was lightning-quick, which wasn't unexpected since we dined on a Sunday night just before closing time and only competed with a handful of tables. Salsas also offers daily lunch specials from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. ($5.25 to $8.95) and specials from the full bar, which include the margaritas, draft and bottled beer and wine. Pepsi products rule the fountain ($1.99; free refills), alongside off-fountain authentic Mexican beverages such as Jarritos and Orchata ($1.95; no refills). For quick-serve, no-nonsense, fresh Mexican fare, Salsas should fit the bill with the clock-watching lunchtime crowd, busy families and moviegoers from next door. I don't eat Mexican food very often, but wanted to have a nice dinner for my birthday. I saw Salsa's while driving home from work and decided to give it a go. I was seated right away and brought chips and salsa. The waitress took my order and I got my food rather quickly. I chose the steak ranchero. It was good. My only complaint on it would be it need more "kick" the sauce was a little bland for my taste, but it had good flavor. I added a dash of salt and that helped. The steak was cooked rather nicely. I usually don't eat but a cursory bite or two of the beans and rice, but the beans were really good and I ate all of them. The rice was ok. The portions were fairly large. All in all it was a good meal, I'll go back and try something else.

This place is Mediocre at best. We got our food before our drinks, not to mention the food was below average. And the waitress never checked on us. All around horrible!!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
