The following review was published under my byline in the Florida Times-Union on Thursday, November 6, 2014. This is an original, unabridged version of that review. Not long ago, Jacksonville's Mexican dining options were largely greasy-spoon, strip-mall affairs offering little more than the basics in a hard shell or flour tortilla. Nowadays, gourmet operators such as Cantina Laredo, TacoLu, Flying Iguana and a plethora of food trucks have blown up those basics with fusion tacos, small-batch tequilas and other higher-end options. The Southside's Tinseltown area now has its own gourmet-Mex destination in Papi Chulo's. The eatery opened in late September on the site of the former Taste Food Studio and Urban Flats, at Touchton Road and Deer Lake Court. Papi Chulo's hasn't yet firmed up what it will do with theme dining (think Taco Tuesdays), live entertainment, even closing times. The menu, though, is ready to rock for lunch and dinner with an exotic assortment of guac mashups, tacos, burritos and bowls, fajitas, enchiladas, ceviches, tortas and homemade desserts. My trusty review crew braved the rain last Thursday night for our orderly menu dissection. We began with the almost-obligatory complimentary basket of chips and salsa. While the yellow corn chips were lightly salted, substantial and satisfying, the basic, mild salsa tasted like little more than tomato paste. Heat-seeking diners can ask for the "chile de árbol" red salsa for a major bump-up in flavor and spice. You also can heat up your arrival with Happy Hour, which runs weekdays from 4 to 7 p.m. with two-for-one margaritas and $2 street tacos. Two-dollar Dos Equis drafts are available all day. Our dipping ways continued with the Guacamole Flight ($9.50), starring smaller portions of the Fresh Guacamole ($7.50 a la carte), Caribbean ($8.50 on its own; with mango, diced peppers, cilantro, habanero and clover honey essence) and New England ($11.50 solo; with lump crabmeat, aromatics and roasted corn). All were satisfyingly creamy and chunky, but the Caribbean's mango just made it a tad sweeter than my liking. The Chicken Flautas ($7.50 for 3) were jumbo-plump, perfectly golden outside and melty inside, and served with dallops of pico, sour cream and fresh guac. They were addictive treats. Entrée-wise, the Chile Relleno ($12) were two substantial mild poblano chiles--one stuffed with Chihuahua cheese, the other with picadillo--and topped with salsa rojo and chile verde. They had a nice, flaky texture and, especially with the mildly seasoned picadillo meat, a delicious finish. You can get any of 14 specialty themes as a taco, burrito or bowl. Tacos are roughly half the cost of bowls, or upgrade a bowl to a burrito for a buck. The Duck Dynasty Taco ($5.50) brought together chunks of roasted duck, chipotle cherry sauce, Napa cabbage slaw, pickled red onions and cotija cheese. The desperately seeking seasoning duck meat needed a little something else. The Taco Loco ($4) did better in the flavor department, adding shredded guajillo chicken, roasted serrano peppers and guac. My entrée, the Fajitas de Camarones ($15), featured a hot skillet of blackened shrimp atop sautéed red onions, poblano chiles, lettuce, Chihuahua cheese and the usual condiments. The lightly seasoned shrimp were plump and bursting with fresh flavor. I resisted the temptation to finish them off alone with my fork, without dressing them up fajita-style. Out of four desserts on the menu, we went for two, both suitable for sharing. While not as moist as I would have liked, the Tres Leches Cake ($6) was a mild, sweet treat. Spiceaholics will jump for the Aztec Chocolate Cake ($6) with layers of spicy ganache throughout. Papi Chulo's offers gluten-intolerant diners a hemp tortilla option for tacos and burritos. In a welcoming gesture to families, kids under age 7 eat free, too. For classy, gourmet Mex with an innovative menu full of flavor (and heat, if that's your thing), Papi Chulo's is a great pick. Fourth trip here. This trip was 4 of us on a sat night about 8:15 Buisness was slow maybe four other parties. We were greeted cordially by the hostess and given our pick of seating which was nice. Our server was very plesant and helpful and the manager came over and chatted us up for a few minuites which was nice. Started the meal with taco fries calamari the mexican street corn and a cheese chili relleno. Chili relleno was very good one of the better ones ive had very cheesy and fried well Mexican street corn was awesome very flavorful Calamari while good was a bit tough The taco fries were good just picture beef loaded nachos but with fries The entres we ordered took a bit longer than id like to cone out I think we waited 45 min and they weren busy and there was a big fail ill get to. Ordered the korean bulgogi, bob marley, duck dynasty, don juan tacos and a siuthern bell burrito. Don juan taco was amazing to me Bulgogi was awesome Bob marley never dissapoints Duck dynasty was great Now for the fail On the southern bell burrito the chicken was dry and tasted like it was made hours ago and the black beans were so underdone they were still crunchy for waiting 45 min it was rather dissapointing. Sent it back and was removed from the bill. Drinks we had the horchata alcoholic drink which was omfg and a alcoholic rootbeer float which was equally as awesome. Dessert we had the fried ice cream man was it awesome. Over all was a good dinner with the exception of how long it took and the burrito. I have to say my only quam with the place is its a little inconsistent one time is amazing and the next is eeh

What a great place. Absolutely everything we ordered was great. We had a classic guacamole, several different tacos, churros, and tres leches. 5 people in my group and we all liked the food. The tres leches was a little dry but good flavor. That was the only complaint I gave it 4 stars because the table was a bit sticky, other than that we will be going back, in fact, this is now our #1 mexican option. Keep in mind, this is real mexican food, not a texmex chain The service was also excellent and friendly

The star rating I am giving is based solely on the food, not the atmosphere or service. Service was fine, atmosphere was unfortunately atypical for a bar scene type of restaurant. The food we tried: Street Corn - terrible. Covered in some kind of white mayonnaise cream sauce, then served with some other pink sauce. If you do want this corn, I suggest requesting no white creamy sauce. Street Corn version 2 - terrible. They offer the corn to be already removed from the cob, so we requested it prepared this way. When it came, it was basically a bowl of the white creamy sauce with corn mixed in. Could hardly taste the actual corn. Carnitas taco - Not very good. Carnitas marinade is just too sweet. The flavor of the sweetness overwhelms the taco, and it almost tastes like a fruit taco with some carnitas mixed in. Fish taco - the salsa they put in is some kind of fruit salsa and much like the carnitas, is too sweet. It overpowers the fish in the tacos. Tasted alone, the battered mahi mahi by itself wasn't too bad, although a bit dry. Carne Asada - the flavor was not bad, but they were a bit on the dry side. For 2 happy hour drinks, 3 street tacos and 2 cobs of corn, $50 feels pretty high for us, especially considering the food. We won't be coming back.

Worst meal in a long time. I went to try a new local restaurant. Don't waste your time or money. The taco and queso are not tasty but you can be your own judge. There are better places to spend your money!

The music was amazing the live entertainment was very well needed and the song selections were nicely chosen. My waitress saved the day was far as food go. I Came in on taco Tuesday and it was my first visit. The taco presentation was nice but the beef tacos were horrible. It had too much powder and seasoning on the tacos. My southern taco was great but it was missing all the toppings. My boyfriend only ate 1 taco needless to say. The grit taco should not be a taco. I only tried the all you can eat tacos but I will definitely try again off the regular menu. The margaritas were on point and full of tequila!! The best taco of the night was the BOB MARLEY. The waitress explained and kept us updated so the customer service outweighed the kitchen.

Looking for great Mexican tacos and a cool atmosphere? Papi Chulo's is the place! Been here a few times and we're never disappointed. The service was super, the waitress came back often to check on our needs and was happy to answer questions for us. I can't say enough about the Mexican street corn, which we ordered off the cob...so good we got a second order!! One day I'll try a burrito....nah, the tacos are too good!

I was so impressed with this last visit that I had to update. When a friend first suggested going here, I was going to skip out on the whole dinner. Somewhat last minute, my inner sloth tells me I won't have to cook if I go. I enter and immediately this place has upgraded. I heard bachata! Unlike last past visits, I was greeted at the door. Then asked if I was joining a party. I couldn't see anyone so I waited. Host made sure to check on me and offered me a menu to place a drink while I waited. We get salsa and chips - I doubt that was offered in the past. Not sure if I was THAT hungry or was the salsa THAT good. I was trying not to devour that while roaming the menu. Past memories gave me a bad taste for most of the menu but I settle on a shrimp burrito after I hear what everyone else orders. I wanted to make sure that several options were at the table. Our staff member was in all black and had a friendly smile that made her easy to talk to and identify. Favored margaritas were all over the table. I sipped on a refreshing frozen peach. And chatted up with new folks. Cheese Quesadilla - I can't get excited about it as a dish. But it was good. Guacamole - Much improved. Great chunky mix with perfect balance of heat. Veggie Enchilada - tasted as good as it looked Camarones - This was so good! This burrito was filled with giant seasoned shrimp. The sauce inside the burrito was everything. Nicely seasoned without overpowered heat. The burrito was huge! Outside of some needed sour cream this was great. *Temporarily given up meat so wasn't able to try the other meat dishes. I was pleasantly surprised by décor, service, food, and bar. I'll wait to see if this change was a fluke or the new standard.

The best taco bowl I've ever had. I ordered the Bob Marley bowl and it was every bit of a master piece. I'll be back again.

I had the taco fries, mmmmm awesome, and enough to share. Peach sangria was delicious too. Brandi, the server, was so helpful and on top of everything. Everything was super fresh and lots of it. Kind of bummed they were out of tortilla chips. I love salsa and was so sad when I found out I couldn't try it. But enough of the peach sangria and you'll forget all about that! I'll definitely be back......if they let me in !!.. Churros!!!!

  • Michelle M.

It's not terrible. It's a definite "meh". 2 for 1 margaritas were watered down. You sort of expect that to happen since its a BOGO but honestly it was so devoid of tequila I would've felt fine letting my 17 year old have one. The cerviche was fine. My husband's chimichanga was actually a burrito overstuffed with rice--way too much rice. The brisket they used was flavorful and really well seasoned but it was overpowered by the rice. He was very irritated that he ordered a chimichanga and got a burrito. Did they seriously not know the difference? The kids' chicken flautas were okay. We were really bummed that the taste and quality just wasn't there. We'd heard good things about it but we were extremely unimpressed. With so many other good Mexican places out there, this one doesn't compare. I'm not saying we wouldn't return, I'm just saying there's no reason for us to.

So we decided to pop in and try this place again....saw a movie and headed over. It was nice to be greeted at the door. Robert, who said he was new, was a great waiter. He was friendly and in top of things. Very attentive and super sweet. We got chips and salsa this time, which we didn't have last time, and ordered both mild and hot. The mild was good. The hot was very hot and loved by the guys. They said they would come back just for the chips and salsa. My husband got the brisket taquitos. He loves brisket and like the taquitos. He said they were good but not great. I had the steak bowl. It was fresh and tasty. A little dry but otherwise had good flavor. My son had the brisket bowl. Again, the brisket was good. Not everyone can make a good brisket but they nailed it. My daughter in law got the biggest yellow fin burrito ever. She said it was good. She ate about half of it. She said it would be better with less beans and rice but it was good. Final verdict- MUCH better than our last experience. We will come and try again. My husband will be back for the chips and hot salsa.

Had the beer battered Mahi taco. Was awesome. The staff was even better. Tabitha, Mitsy, and Kyannah were great! They made our experience all the better. We'll be back for sure.

I had been to Papi Chulos for a special event before but hadn't written a review on it, mainly because I don't believe the treatment would be the same as if I'd just walked in any old time. A friend announced that she's going to Happy Hour and asked if anyone wanted to join her. 2 for 1 Margaritas? $2.50 street tacos? How could I resist? We had a sizable group with us and towards the back on the entrance. I really wasn't in the mood for tacos because I had my eye on something I had previously, the New England Guacamole. Man oh man, who would have thought to use crab (note that it's crab with a "c" and not a "k") in guacamole? Add in roasted corn and old bay seasoning and you got yourself a tastebud trip from Mexico to New England. Absolutely fab! I was challenged to finish the entire dip and while I did struggle a bit at the end, I did it. Yay me! I also ordered the Taco Fries based on my last experience but a friend told me it was changed a bit. When I first had it, it were topped with steak pieces but now it's topped with beef picadillo. No problem. It also came with shredded cheddar cheese, pico de gallo, and a huge dollop of sour cream. Between the people sitting on my end of the table, we could not finish it all and left about half of it. We ate, drank, and laughed well into the night and our server Kirsten was great. Next time I will definitely get some tacos on Taco Tuesday.

Everything was great here. The food, the service, the appearance of the restaurant, all good. I rarely give 5 star reviews, and I was tempted to give a 4 star because it is a little pricey, but I think they deserve it. It is the best eclectic-mex I've found yet around Jacksonville. I will be back. For the record, I had the Bob Marley taco, the Taco Loco, and the Carne Asada Street Taco, all with soft corn shells. All the ingredients were fresh and of high quality.

Today we decided to hit up Papi Chulo's for lunch. I have gone a few times for happy hour and have enjoyed the $2.50 street tacos along with the drink specials. Although, I did enjoy my lunch I was a bit disappointed that my lunch partner's taco didn't come with a side such as rice, beans or both. I ordered the Bang Bang Shrimp burrito and it was pretty freaking good. This huge burrito was filled with rice beans and sweet flavored shrimp. It was also topped off with cheese and chimichurri-type sauce that gave it a good kick. I also got a taste of my friends Pollo Flautas and thought they were very tasty as well. Although my meal was good, I did have an issue with the ONE taco costing $6.00 without an additional side. Needless to say, I would definitely come back especially for happy hour. If I do decide to order one of the specialty items and have a hankering for some rice and beans, I'll just have to order it as a burrito or a bowl. I'm hopeful they will succeed.

As is evident from previous reviews (below), I have now been to Papi Chulo's multiple times and I think I've figured it all out. The food is good, no question about that. The key is to come in for lunch on the weekends. Same food but much faster and superior service. On my most recent visit I tried the bang shrimp bowl. Very tasty and after some chips I only finished about half. Very generous serving.

The good; chips and salsa were good. They give you two types of salsa. The service was good. The bad; Way over priced! This place is more Caribbean than Mexican. Their chimis and burritos are filled with flavored beans, flavored rice and virtually no meat, but what's in there is flavored. It's simply too many flavors at once. This place isn't like your typical Mexican place. They serve black beans, not re fried beans. The food made our stomachs hurt almost instantly. I attribute it to just too many contrasting flavors. This was not a good experience after the chips and salsa. We won't be back, not only because the overpowering flavors, but because I feel we were ripped off with their skimpy meat portions. I can't reiterate enough how little carnitas were in my chimi. Step up your game Papi!

Haven't actually eaten IN the restaurant yet, but we've gotten take-away several times now. LOVE their chorizo tacos. We've enjoyed everything we've gotten so far. First time we got food there, we craved it so much we got it again the next night!!

Great time with good peoples! Went in for some Taco Tuesday specials. Turns out they have a great Happy Hour too! Noshed on about a dozen tacos, drank about a bunch of margaritas, maybe even had a couple shots?!! Best taco I had? Probably the Carne....

I went to Papi Chulos for the first time today. Checked in with Yelp app and got a free margarita! The margarita was good. I ordered the bang shrimp bowl and it was awesome! I liked that it came with black beans and rice. We also ordered some of their queso and it was great! You could tell that it's freshly made. Overall, the meal was good and service was good as well. I will be going back!

When I recently visited this new taco spot in Tinsel Town I was afforded the opportunity to try an array of menu items!!! Of course you can't get the night started off right without a good cocktail so my friend, Nate ordered a watermelon martini and I had the "RICK JAMES _____"! (I always want to finish his name with that famous yet inappropriate innuendo but as always, I'll keep it classy!) The Rick James was pretty good! It was like a peach flavored frozen margarita. Very good! For starters we had the Guacamole and Ceviche Flights. They included a sampling of all three types of their Ceviche: Papi's Ceviche, Mango & Mahi Ceviche, and my fav, Shrimp & Avacado Ceviche. However, the hit of this course was the Guacamole Flight which included their Fresh Guacamole (original), Carribean Gaucamole, and everyone's fav, the New England Guacamole which was filled with lump crab meat and roasted corn! My BF came with me and ate up all of the servings of New England Guac'! It was amazing! Next up was a real treat, the Mexican Street Corn! You get a whole ear of grilled corn, dipped in a garlicky lime Mexican mayo and sprinkled with cotija cheese and chili powder. I didn't think I'd like it but I LOVED IT! Chicken Flautas were next! One thing I can say about Papi chulos is that they season their food to perfection! Every thing was very flavorful! These chicken flautas were delicious! The shredded chicken was flavored with guajillo and the flautas were made with flour tortillas! YUMMM!!! Now Papi Chulos is known for their tacos so naturally, we tried some of their specialty tacos! Taco 1: Taco Loco: This taco came with shredded guajillo chicken, napa cabbage slaw, pickled red onions (YUM), roasted serrano peppers, cilantro, and cotija cheese! I don't know what it is about Guajillo, but I think I'm in love! Taco 2: Steak Fajita Taco: This taco was made with marinated skirt steak, thickly sliced and sauteed red onion and peppers, with queso sauce! I mean come on, of course it was good! Fajita indeed! Taco 3: Duck Dynasty Taco: This taco was made with roasted duck, napa cabbage slaw, pickled red onion, cotija cheese, and a pineapple slaw. I'm not the biggest duck fan because it's a bit too fatty for my liking but this taco wasn't bad at all! It had great flavor! Taco 4: Bang Shrimp Taco: This was my favorite taco!!! It was made with fried shrimp, napa cabbage slaw, sweet chili crema, black sesame seeds, and chopped scallions! I could've eaten like 5 more and been good!!! Taco 5: Bob Marley Taco: This taco was pretty fancy! It was made with jerk chicken, mango salsa, black beans cooked in pork fat, napa cabbage slaw, and a nice sliver of fried plantain on top! It wasn't bad but it had a lot, maybe too much, going on for me! You cant end a great meal without dessert! We had the Tres Leches Cake! It was incredibly moist and you could taste that home made flavor! It was iced with whipped cream and lime zest! It was great! Overall, I was very pleased with Papi Chulos. They have a large menu with a plethora of choices and I was most impressed with how nicely seasoned everything was. With that being said, you probably won't go wrong with anything you order. I am definitely going to be visiting again for more chicken flautas, bang shrimp tacos, and Rick James of course! This would be the perfect spot to stop in before or after a movie at Tinseltown!!!

If you like Moe's, this is your place. If you want authentic Mexican food, go some place else. The service was great, the food was horrible. But let me be more specific. I love Picadillo. I have had it many times. Never at a Mexican restaurant tho. As an enchilada why not. Not, the flavor of a burned pan and more cheese then anything else. My boyfriend loves Carnitas. As a chimichanga not so much. There was almost no meat inside. All rice and beans. The flavor a were all over the place. By the time we got home, we were both sick. As a side note: the person responding to reviews, should take notes and not bash the people writing it. Not every restaurant is perfect and not everyone will like the food. That's why it's our review not yours.

I love it here. I'm new to the city but this place is definitely a must try. I visit at least once a month. The staff is fun and friendly but of course that's not the first reason I visit so frequently... The food is AMAZING. I have never had a bad experience or bad meal. The flavor and authenticity of everything I've had here is perfect (to my palate). You must try the sangria...it's the best I've had so far. I wish they had the recipe for the queso because it's world-class.

So I finally got the chance to experience Papi Chulo's for myself. I kept hearing varied opinions about this place. Some people said it was great while others weren't too excited. I myself am not too impressed. I don't loathe the place but I won't be a regular. As I walked into the restaurant the first thing I noticed was that this place was huge maybe too big. The art and decor is eye-catching and cool but I wasn't there for the art I wanted to eat some tacos. I ordered the Bob Marley and the Bang bang shrimp tacos. The Bob Marley had jerk chicken, beans and rice and mango. It was pretty good. I was packed with flavor and freshness. The bang bang shrimp taco is exactly what you would expect a Bang bang shrimp taco to be: the shrimp was equally sweet and spicy. Their fries are great- battered, crispy and seasoned well. Regular drinks are $3. While the tacos are tasty they are pretty small and so It left me a little...hungry. Is it wrong to expect more from a $6 taco? Service was a miss as well, our server dude was not "on point". Things were slow despite the place not being packed at all. I might go back but I'm in no hurry.

I was a little upset that for Taco Tuesdays you couldn't "share" tacos with your dining companion. I wouldn't have been an issue had I known upfront. The service was friendly and the tacos were amazing! I had the Bang shrimp, Southern bell, Chorizo and Carnitas. The Bang shrimp wasn't an option for Taco Tuesdays. It was my first time and I will be going back!

I wanted to find a Mexican Food place for lunch...found Papi Chulos...walked in...first off it was a great atmosphere, well stocked bar. Ordered the Chicken Enchiladas with a fried egg on top...DELICIOUS!!!! Very close to authentic Mexican food. Katie, the bartender, was very attentive also. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone and will come back!!

Food is great! California Dreamer, Bang Shrimp and Asian Pork Belly. The Mexican Street Corn is also a good try if you're willing. Our server Ben was AWESOME! We had a lot of fun with him being our server. Definitely coming back. Great place to hang out for a lunch get together with some good friends.

Food is really good. You get a lot of food for the money. Our waitress tonight was rude. School bell was ringing! First we asked for queso with chorizo added. Very scarce amount was added so we brought it to her attention. Then she schooled us on the exact measurement. So I guess she was ticked. So no tea refills for me. Had to get another waitress to bring me a refill. Then went to the restroom. Two toilets were full of "stuff" and we're unusable. Brought it to our waitresses attention. Yes you guessed it - schooled again. She asked me if I had seen toilet #3 and I could go use that one!! Disgusting. I am a nurse and professor. Concerned about the sanity of our food. So my husband spoke with the manager who was terrific. He followed up and tried to do service recovery by taking our appetizers off our bill. Waitress strikes again- when our meals come out - no plate for me. My husband and I were sharing Fajitas. Had to get someone else to bring me one. Manager is working on improving his wait staff. So beware of the service.

Honestly the experience here overall was awful. We were sat and waited 15 minutes for anyone to come over. Once we ordered our margaritas they came and we're basically just sour mix. Our server was so spaced out she never checked on us. My friend and I ordered burritos and they gave us the incorrect orders and no one was friendly. The manager checked on us and we explained what happened and he basically did not care and didn't even understand what we were saying. The only positive experience was the queso. I also hate tomatoes and they placed in and around my burrito after I asked them not to.

I heard about this place a month or so back. A friend of mine told me he was painting the mural on the wall. Well he painted his part and they painted a couple of other place and left the place almost alone. I mean the place had me thinking I was still in Taste. But, then I guess it wasn't very old. Ok, I read a lot of the reviews hell all the reviews and I wanted to give it a shot. I went in today and looked around and the place is big and open. I decided on the bar there are TV's there. The bartender is there and over there and over here. Heck a pinball machine would have been happy. She stopped and got my drink and off she went. I did snag a menu too. Then I looked at it and looked at it. I could have learned Spanish if it was written that way. Let's just say I had some time to burn before she took my order. I was starting to wonder if she was the only one there but no. There was 3 other servers and only 2 guys at the bar. I did get to order. I went with a pork belly (my fav) and a Bob Marley tacos. Just a light snack because I still had other things to do today. Oh yea the lady that came in and sat next to me asked for chips and salsa. The tarbender said that they are making them and it will be about 10 minutes. It's 12:30 and you don't have the staple of a Mexican Restaurant ready. After reading the reviews I really wasn't missing the chips and salsa. They were right the salsa was bland and tasted canned. Taco #1 Bob was pretty good it had some kick but the mangos all 3 pieces of it were hard not ripe at all. Then the pork taco that was supposed to be pork belly was not pork belly. The tarbender even said yea that's belly. Lady I think I know pork belly. I stayed at a Holiday inn last night. Ok this place is not long for this world of town in my opinion. But, nice art Sean.

WORST service EVERY time. My first visit the food was good but the server was unbelievably slow, and we were one of the only people in the restaurant. I had to get silverware and refills from the hostess multiple times. Didn't pay attention to us at all. Food took longer than 30 minutes and I had to get a bar tender to find our Waiter for the check. HOWEVER I decided to return. We thought maybe it was just our server. I have never been treated so poorly by every single employee in a restaurant before. We returned on cinco de mayo expecting it to be busy and having a lot of grace. The hostess couldn't have been more clueless. She didn't know her behind from a biscuit. They didn't have a clue what reservation we were talking about but said they would seat us in a private room. 45 minutes after they continually lied about them getting up soon the back room was just ordering. In the five minutes I stood waiting for someone at an unmanned front desk SIX people hunted down management to complain. One table had been waiting for food for 90 minutes only to find the food was never placed. Another had been seated 25 minutes without so much as even a "hi I'm your sever I'll be with you in a moment" another didn't have silverware for 15 minutes and the hostess just stared at them and said "sorry". Nobody could be bothered to help and the staff was completely clueless. Everyone was confused and had no response to the multiple tables leaving the restaurant without paying. I was not expecting it to be a calm experience on cinco de mayo at a Mexican restaurant but I am appalled by the service. Come to find out this has happened to many of my friends . I will not be returning and it seems to me that the reputation of the snail speed service is not a big secret around town. Don't go unless you wanna be there for a minimum of 3 hours and do the servers hostess and managers job for them.

This was our first time here, and we loved it. We both had a smothered burrito, which was excellent, and we also had the trio of guacamole/queso. Their chips, guacamole, queso and salsa are all amazing fresh and delicious. We are definitely coming back.

As far as Mexican food is concerned. This is now my go to place. Great food. Tacos better then Taco Lu's. And you have to try there fresh guacamole. They actually have three different types of guacamole. The menu is pretty cool you can order your food either in a taco, burrito or bowl. Happy hour two for one margaritas.

I have to say that the taco (Korean Bulgogi) was fresh and full of flavor however I think the price was way overpriced. I chose one taco so that I sink my teeth into the tres leches cake and I was terribly disappointed! The milk covering tasted heavily of coconut and the cake was hard and not at all as I know tres leches to be. The service is also terribly slow so don't go if you are on a time crunch b

The food is okay , their customer service is awful!!! I was told my to go order would be ready in 20 min but it took over 40! That is ridiculous for to go, and for telling me it would be 20 min max! Will never be going back

I first tried this place last night with my fiancé and BFF for trivia night. The chips and salsa was really good. My fiancé and I got burritos (he got a beef burrito and I got the carnitas) the burritos were big and very filling. We took our leftover burritos home. We also got an infusion tequila shot. He got the orange candy and I got the cherry jolly rancher. Both were pretty good. My BFF got a chimichanga and an infusion shot and a regular margarita. She liked all of it. We plan to make this place our Friday night trivia joint. The service was really good. We had Tabitha as a waitress. She was always coming by to check on us.

Papa Chulo's is by far one of the best Spanish restaurants in town. The quesadilla is the best we've ever had. Made with authentic Mexican cheese. The flavor is spectacular! We also got the all American Bowl served in a taco shell bowl with beans, rice, ground beef, sour cream and pico. Simply the best!

I stopped in here for lunch and had the bang bang shrimp bowl. It was a large portion! I enjoyed it very much. The atmosphere of the restaurant reminds me of a bar without the smoke for some reason. The service was really attentive. I would return if I were in the area.

Food is very salty and that comes from my husband who looooves salt. Got burrito and enchiladas. Nothing special about either. Beans are not cooked well enough. They only offer cilantro lime rice for everything which is not very Mexican. Enchilada plate looked pretty but was dry. Will not return. Decor inside has a lot wanting still....very empty.

This restaurant was "no bueno." It took an hour and a half for the meal to arrive from the kitchen and the waitress was MIA the entire evening. After the extremely long wait time the food was only so-so. What a disappointment! Papi Chulo's should be called Papi nunca mas.

Torn on this review. I'd probably have given 3 stars until seeing my bill was $75, even after a free margarita. Nope. Definitely not worth it. Service was painfully slow. Drinks took way too long and were fairly weak and watery. The guac with mango had a great flavor, but weird texture, like it was mixed in a blender (or worse, was store bought). The street corn was tasty but soggy. I had a chicken chimichanga which was delicious. No complaints at all - the tortilla was perfectly crispy and the flavor was great. Husband had the scallop taco which he thought was OK, and the mahi taco, that he couldn't even stomach due to the fishy taste. For the cost, I'd go to La Nop instead and get tons of food and strong drinks (and still pay less). The service really needs to step it up a notch as well.

This restaurant truly has amazing food, wait staff, manager, owner and well everything you want in a wonderful restaurant. We went for Taco Tuesday and let me tell you we were not disappointed at all. The food is some of the best food I have ever eaten in my life. I will never go to another Mexican restaurant again. So many yummy tacos to choose from. If you ever go and I can recommend you should, try the Southern Bell taco. Mmmmm!!! Our waitress Michelle was the best waitress we have ever had at any place we have eaten at in the past. The margaritas were so good. If I could give this restaurant more than 5 stars I would. Go check it out for yourself, I think you will love it!!!

The house margaritas are pre-made and poured from a pitcher. Perhaps it's because of that, they feel watered down. You pretty much need at least two to enjoy any buzz. The tacos are ok. The California was by far, the best. It was flavorful and the meat was tender. The pork belly was a little tough, which is odd with pork belly. The steak fajita taco was pretty darn bad. The steak was tough and the cheese was basically nacho cheese, which is NOT appetizing. The service was prompt. Overall it was a fine dinner, but not great.

  • Alex V.

Salsa had kind of a weird after taste not bad just off. Carnitas chimichanga and the Chorizo chimichanga were TERRIBLE. There was an entire forearm sized burrito filled with 70% completely undercooked and hard rice 20% beans 10% meat. The little meat that was in the burrito was delicious. HOWEVER the tacos had wonderful presentation and tasted great which is the only reason this place got 3 stars. Undercooked anything is bad even if its just rice. Papi Chulo's? more like Pappy's Coulo.

So I was looking for a last minute place to spend my birthday with my family, and I mean last minute. We came across this restaurant Papi Chulo`s I was kinda sceptical at first (you know Mexican food) but though it was late they welcomed my family in. I ordered the nachos with chicken and the works. Not to mention my free Margaritas for checking in with yelp. The food was absolutely delicious. The Drinks were awesome. Thank you papi chulo you made my birthday an evening to remember.

I absolutely love Mexican food, and although I prefer more traditional Mexican dishes, it was delicious! I had the Mexican street corn and the Duck Dynasty burrito and they were both amazing. Our waitress was super sweet and the food came out quick. I'm definitely going back to try other things and to redeem my free margarita!

When I saw Papi Chulos come up on my radar, I had envisioned a small, hole in the wall Mexican joint, so I may be writing with some misplaced expectations. I plugged it into to my GPS and was a little surprised to find myself at the old Taste Studio. Yup, Taste is gone... well, repainted in bright colors (and in some parts badly) but there is a cool skeleton mural on the wall. Don't get me wrong, the space is still open and pretty cool, with plenty of seating inside and out, but it's not an authentic Mexican eatery. I wanted to pick up a few things to take home, so I bellied up to the bar and had a Dos Equis while I waited. I checked out the menu, but asked for several recommendations, and ended up ordering: Al Pastor, Shrimp, Carnitas, and steak tacos, guacamole, salsa and queso, a steak quesadilla, and why I was really there: chili rellenos. Let's start with the good. The guacamole was fantastic! Chunks of avocado, a little jalapeno and enough citrus to make it nice and tangy. The salsa was just ok, as I prefer a bit of a kick, but I do understand that's not for everyone. Queso was just ok as well. For the tacos, the Al Pastor was completely inedible. I tried two times to get a bite, but the pork was so tough, gristly and there was no was I was going to be able to chew through it. I actually had to spit it out. The carnitas and steak were ok, but I must admit I'm a little spoiled with housemade tortillas, but the overall flavor was ok. The quesadilla was burnt. :( And the chilli rellenos? You get two huge chillis with the order, and they are filled with cheese, but the chilli was just a tad crunchier than I was looking for.... and needed a bit more red sauce. When I looked at the check again, I'd spent close to $60 bucks for all of this, and while I ordered a lot of things, the quality wasn't there for me. If I went back, I'd just order the quac. I hear they have two for one margaritas though....

  • Brandie D.

We started with their fresh guacamole which is extremely good and then I enjoyed the Bob Marley bowl and some margaritas. We sat at the bar and service was great. Within a couple hours they had a Colombian festival with a DJ and dancing that we were fortunate to be able to enjoy without having to pay the cover charge due to us already having dinner. It was a blast!

So headed out to Papi Chulos after work, as a party of 7. We went for taco Tuesday, and showed up around 8:30. We requested to sit outside as music was too loud inside. The place was about a third full. I don't know if out issues were waiter or kitchen related. We didn't receive our food order for 45min to an hour. Drinks took forever to come too. We made a second order almost immediately and they still took the same amount of time, with probably only 2 tables still in the restaurant. The tacos once we finally got them were alright, but the service was enough to deter a return trip.

My friend Angela (who I have known since 1st grade!) told me about Papi Chulos recently, so we decided to go out there and check them out. The restaurant is located on Touchton Rd, where Urban Flats used to be. We sat down and started looking at the menu, which is huge, and ordered drinks. Now I'm going to get this out of the way first, because it tainted my whole meal...my drink glass was dirty. Like dirty dirty. Like someone's drink was in there previously and it wasn't washed, dirty. And the worst part is that it wasn't noticeable until after I drank a little bit of the drink. The only way to describe how this feels is to use an 80's quote....grody to the max!! The waiter gave me a new drink but I was grossed out about it for the entire meal. Now that that is out of the way, on to the food! They brought out chips and salsa, and I ordered some queso. We really liked the salsa, it tasted super fresh. The queso was also really good. But really, can queso ever be bad? I decided on a few different things, the first was Chicken Flautas. I am always looking for flautas, so I was so excited to find them here. Well I ordered chicken, but I got beef. I ate it anyway because I am not opposed to beef, but I reallllllllly wanted chicken. Still, it they were very tasty and I enjoyed the guacamole and sour cream that came on the side. My second item was the California Dreamer taco, which is Mahi (beer battered or blackened). nappa cabbage slaw, cilantro, pickled red onions, avocado, cilantro lime sauce, pico de gallo and cotija cheese. I actually ordered mine without the red onion, but it came on there anyway. I scraped it off and moved on. The taco was absolutely delicious!! One of the best fish tacos I have ever had. The fish piece was huge and very tasty!! I also ordered a Carnitas taco. The pork was very flavorful and juicy. I thought it tasted great! I also ordered some Fried Plantains thinking I was getting tostones. What I actually got was sweet plantains. They really need to update their menu or add a description, because fried plantains are tostones, period. I am not a fan of sweet plantains, so I can't really judge this one. Angela liked them, and said the sauce on there was really good. Verdict: Liked it The food was really good and they had a variety of different menu items. They are still new so they have to work out the kinks, but I think they have potential. If you are in the area, give them a shot!

Awful service, awful food, awful attitude pretty much the worst restaurant experience in years. We will never go back. One star is extremely generous. The service was so bad we waited almost 2 hours just for a couple of tacos.

Waited for 2:30 for my food, the waitress said it was shift change, The manager didn't even come to the table to apologize for the delay....,the tacos are ok, not even worth the wait. Very disappointed.

  • Jessica A.

A couple of days after my 1st visit, the manager contacted me to apologize for the service I had received and invited me back. I was reluctant at first, but I'm glad I gave Papi's a second chance. The Mexican street corn was delicious! I enjoyed every bite of it. I also ordered the Bang shrimp taco and steak fajita taco. My favorite was the Bang shrimp,it was amazing! My boyfriend ordered a steak quesadilla and the Mexican street corn as well and he loved them both. The service and the atmosphere was great. Apparently on Saturday's, they have a band performing from 9pm-close. All in all, I'm glad I have this place a second chance.

I like Papi Chulo's. I wish I could say that I loved it. Papi Chulo's has a gigantic menu, but they really just make a few things. The way that the menu works is that they have a set of ingredients. Let's take the Bang Shrimp for example: Fried shrimp, napa cabbage slaw, sweet chili, crema, black sesame seeds and chopped scallions. They can use that set of ingredients to make tacos, a burrito, or a bowl with rice. The tacos are alright. I've had a few specialty ones. Bang shrimp is tasty, as is the Southern Bell (chicken, avocado ranch and cabbage). They also make street tacos, which are only $2.50 ea if you order before 7PM. I'm a big fan of al pastor tacos, but they are a bit dry here. I'd recommend the carnitas, chicken or shrimp over the steak or pastor. Burritos are massive here and very filling. You can also make any burrito a "wet burrito" by covering it in cheese dip for a dollar. I haven't had a rice bowl, but they look pretty tasty. The other menu items I've tried are the street corn, guac and queso. The street corn looks so awesome, but falls pretty flat in terms of taste. It is crisped up and dipped in a garlic mayo sauce and sprinkled with spices. The guac is also pretty bland, and the queso was just ok. I'll probably keep coming back every now and then because it's convenient to work and where I spend a lot of afternoons, but I wish they'd scale back the menu and just work on really nailing a few dishes. I think the price is a little high for the quality of the dishes they are bringing to the table. Happy hour is a good deal with $2.50 street tacos and 2-1 margaritas until 7.

    (3)
  • Stephanie T.

I have to agree with most of the people on here. I got the guac and wasn't upset with how it tasted and luckily we went on a Wednesday and it was $2 house margs for ladies. SCORE!!! I got a bowl and didn't think to myself - WOW this is the best, but it was pretty decent. The only thing is that we went a littler later than normal and our service wasn't the best. For no one being in the restaurant you'd think they would have been faster, but they weren't. For the price, I'm not sure I'd go unless it was happy hour or something like that where there'd be better specials to choose from.

So I decided to stop by for some brunch after seeing their menu and was extremely excited. I ended up getting the chipotle eggs Benedict. You can't go wrong with eggs Benedict.. WRONG. It was overflowed with chipotle. The eggs Benedict was a volcano and the chipotle was the lava. And there was lava everywhere.. Not only was the food awful but the service was almost as bad as the food.

Went for the first and probably only time on a Saturday around 4pm. There was only One waitress. Need I say more? A manager was helping her but when I asked Her for a plate (that I shouldn't have had to ask for based on my order) she forgot and I had to grab a busboy. And while the food was not bad per se, EVERYTHING was heavy on the cilantro. Even on the Nacho fries. When I first saw the menu I thought the queso amd guacamole prices were high BUT the portion sizes are pretty large. We took most of everything home. On the other hand my sister ordered a taco and it was the usual smaller size that all mexican restaurants serve but I believe it cost 6 bucks. All in all I wasn't too impressed.

The food is good but not worth the prices or bad service. We got take out here but the tacos were so soggy that they completely fell apart. So we decided to try it in person to see if it was any better. We went on a Friday night, the place was literally half empty. We waited a good 15 minutes before the waitress even came to take our drink order. We then ordered the taco fries as an app. They took forever but tasted delicious when they came out. The waitress came out again 2 minutes later and said that we would need to change a part of our order because they ran out of meat. She then realized that there was meat on our taco fries and said "hmm I'm not sure where they got that meat from then. Does that taste old?" Ummm gross. Not something you want to say to your customers, joking or not. So we changed the order and also ordered another drink. We then waited......and waited.......and waited...... No food and no drink. We waited for over an hour and a half. We asked to speak to a manager. Right when we asked, the food came out, including the cheeseburger quesadilla we originally ordered because they ended up "making more meat afterall". The waitress then admitted she forgot about the drink. We told her to forget about it. We then told the manager how we waited 1.5 hours for tacos and said that we understood it was a Friday night but asked how long their usual wait time is on a typical Friday night. He said about 45 minutes if it's busy. Well, this particular Friday night they were half empty but we waited double the wait time. His response was "what would you like me to do about it?" with the rudest attitude. He ended up taking a taco and margarita off the bill. Big whoop. Never going there again. Not authentic Mexican food anyway. Its good food but not good enough to make up for the crappy service.

My GF and I decided to try this restaurant after we had heard several positive recommendations and read many good yelp reviews. I wish our experience has been one of those. My GF got there about 755 and was seated promptly was served chips and salsa and her drink and didn't see our waitress again for 30 minutes. I showed up about 815 and after 10-15 minutes of having our waitress pass by our table, had to physically go up to her and say we were ready to order. She took my drink order got some more chips and salsa and refreshed my GFs drink and said she would be back promptly to take our dinner order. After another 10-15 minute intermission she returned with my drinks again offering apologies and took our dinner order. At exactly 9pm our dinner arrived again with more apologies for being delayed. I don't mean to insinuate that our waitress wasn't doing her job. We saw her coming and going at all times. It's not like she was smoking crack with the cooks in the back, far from it. However she was clearly overwhelmed with customers which of course is the managements fault. We could see that she had at least two tables she was working with six or more customers by herself. Yes I know we should have left much earlier in our ordeal but like a train wreck I couldn't pull myself away. I just had to see this thing through. Now to the food. The chips and salsa were nothing special. I really appreciate good salsa and I'm sure this was straight from a can somewhere. My GF had two All-American tacos which she liked very much. I had one street taco and one bang shrimp taco which initially I thought were pretty good. However about an hour later I got stomach cramps followed by explosive diarrhea which told me my initial assessment of my dinner was incorrect. The reason I gave my experience one star was that I was not killed and am still alive today.

I had been hearing for a while that Taste Food Studio was going to be closing down and that a Mexican restaurant would be taking its place...when I finally saw the new banner/sign go up for the new restaurant I was thinking in my head are they serious with that name (Papi Chulos -translation-Sexy Daddy's)! I was like come on are they aiming for a Mexican restaurant or a club? One Friday my friends and I decide to give this place a shot. Yes the menu has changed to Mexican fare but the restaurant is still owned and managed by the same people who ran Taste Food Studio. If you ever went to Taste when they had there taco Tuesdays going on you will notice that they have a lot of the same taco offerings. The good side to this visit- our waiter was nice, attentive, seemed to know what he was doing, knew all the specials, and we didn't wait forever to get our food! Also we went during happy hour so it was 2 for 1 margaritas plus the kids ate free. Also the manager did come to check on us to make sure that everything was going well. I ordered the Mexican street corn as an appetizer which was really good, for my meal I had two tacos 1 shrimp and 1 asada. The shrimp taco was pretty good but the asada taco was a bit cold(the flavor was there)...had it been hotter it would have been great. The manager also came out towards the end of our meal and we explained the issue with the 1 taco we each had, he offered to make us new ones but we were full and glad that he had taken the time to listen to our feedback...he even gave us each a coupon for a free taco on our next visit.

So, I always pride myself in being ahead of the culinary curve as it relates to new businesses opening in town..although I may take a while to be in the mood to try them out. I typically crave Mexican and head over to la nopalera but today we decided to try out the new papi chulos since it's near the barber my hubby uses. (Prestige). Total score! Not only is the menu innovative but familiar, it's also seriously TASTY! Today was Sunday Funday, so I indulged in a pineapple mojito, and the hubs in a classic/house frozen margarita. Instantly I could taste this wasn't the cheapo tequila, and def wasn't the standard sour bar mix, kudos guys for making your own flavor sour mix! It works and makes the drink smooth! (Later found this is tastier on the rocks, trust me, plus there's a yelp check in offer of a free margarita). We started off with queso and chips, with salsa. Maybe I'm a weirdo but I like when the cilantro isn't strong. Too much cilantro tastes like dish soap. Through talking to both our server and the super friendly manager, Jorge, I found the make large fresh batches daily..along with their bar sour mix. I admire this guy. We then decided on an app of the cheese and picadillo empanadas, and moved onto taco heaven. I had two corn soft tacos in the creative southern belle and the Bob Marley jerk chicken. Amazing corn tortillas, perfectly seasoned and sauced chicken on both. The Napa cabbage was crispy and fragrant. The hubs had the bang shrimp crunchy taco sans scallions, the diver scallop and the yellowfin ahi tuna all on crispy corn tacos. Of the three, he raved about the PERFECT sear and temp in the ahi, he even said it rivaled most sushi places! Each had great texture and bursted with flavor. Tl;dr? This place is on point! Solidly constructed and creatively carried out tacos. You can taste the care and LOVE put into these bites. Also, I seriously enjoy and respect when a manager comes and pulls up a chair just to chat. Jorge taste tests his creations and cares about this place. Hands down, give this place a try, you won't regret it. Also, ladies night and bogo margaritas are coming soon. ;)

We love coming here. The food is great, although some I feel are over seasoned (my personal opinion). I love most of the food. They staff is friendly and informative.

Ohhhh yeahhhh! I really enjoyed this new restaurant. THE RESTAURANT It is located in a plaza, but has outdoor seating. The restaurant has lots of windows and lively colors painted indoors. The furniture seemed refurbished, with a few blemishes on them. I sat at a comfy booth and felt as if I had plenty of privacy. It was not crowded because it is still very new, but even if it was a full house, I would still not feel crammed into the restaurant because they spaced the tables out very well. THE SERVICE The host was very pleasant and greeted us with a happy hello before seating us. The server was fantastic and knew the menu well. He was very happy to serve us and seemed genuinely happy to know that we were enjoying our meal. During our meal the host asked my husband in a friendly tone, "Is everything okay, Boss? Do you need anything?" He was just checking to make sure that we were happy. THE FOOD Give me more Papi Chulos! ;) The food was fantastic! They seem to add their flare to all of their food. Even the white cheese dip (queso blanco) has a very different, yet yummy, taste to it. I ordered the Chile Relleno. There was only one restaurant in Jacksonville that could make a good Chile Relleno, but thanks to this restaurant, I now have a new favorite! I received two of them: One was filled with Chihuahua cheese and the other was filled with picadillo. Mmmmm... My husband ordered a burrito and thoroughly enjoyed it. He also ordered a corn on the cob. Was it a regular corn? NOPE! It was presented beautifully with this amazing magic chipotle sauce smothered over it. My meal was $12.00. The portions were large and I genuinely believe that this restaurant could charge more for their meals. Whoever made our meals made them with pride in their work. Dress casually, or dress up to dine at Papi Chulos. It seems like a great place to meet up for drinks or to go on a date. It has an upbeat feel to it. I will be back!

We tried this place because we wanted something new. Waited a LONG time for our food. Service was not good...our waitress was really sweet but must have been new. The restaurant wasn't busy for 'ladies night'....tons of empty tables at dinner time. Management took care of our bill which was good but didn't make up for the two hours we were there for a total of five tacos. I had the bang shrimp taco which was delicious and the mahi taco which was pretty good. The chips were good and the salsa is fresh. My first drink was a warm Corona - should be ICE cold. The margaritas are great. My other half didn't like his beef tacos. They aren't traditional tacos...the lettuce is on the bottom so that was kinda strange for him. I was really excited to see the menu...maybe one day we'll give them another try.

I was really excited to see a Mexican restaurant open in Tinseltown and had such high hopes for Papi Chulos. Unfortunately I could not find much to love about this place. First the good news, the carnitas street taco and the bang shrimp were both really good. Now the bad news, pretty much every else we tried was sort of just okay. The salsa was a bit bland, like a chunky tomato paste. The service was lackluster at best. I typically ask when trying a new place what they recommend and getting a response like "whatever you like", tells me that they either do not dine at the restaurant personally or they just do not care. Perhaps I tried the wrong margarita but the house frozen was pretty must just like ice with no flavor at all. If it was not for the salt and the sliver of lime on the rim, there would have been no taste at all. I asked for no salt but was not going to complain since the lack thereof would not have saved it. I got the happy taco with crab meat and avocados which might have been alright but it was served entirely cold, including the tortilla. The Camerones, blackened shimp, was also bland without a sign of the chipotle creme on it and the Al Pasto pork taco was under-cooked. All the tacos were sparsely filled and a bit overpriced for the size. Hopefully they will step it up a notch and make it here. I would really like a good place to get some better quality tacos in the area.

Not good. The menu was enticing and I had high hopes, but it stopped there. 6 of us went for a pre-movie meal. I had a peach margarita. $11 for a sugary sweet peach smoothie. Not a drop of tequila or Cointreau to be found. Promised to be garnished with fresh peach and it was instead garnished with a dried out lime wedge. I ordered the taco salad with chicken. The salad shell was greasy. The lettuce was shredded iceberg lettuce that tasted a lot like the plastic bag it was dumped out of. The chicken was soggy which in turn made the salad soggy. The extent of the vegetables on the salad was the lettuce. No tomatoes. Nothing else. The bright spot was the dressing. Thankfully it was on the side though or it would have made the salad that much mushier. A friend ordered chicken fajitas with no cheese or sour cream. She ended up with cheese & sour cream, but no peppers. Another friend ordered the fish bowl and got shrimp. The waitress clearly needs to work on her listening skills. What a bummer.

Hey, check in on Yelp and you get a free reg marg when you buy 2 tacos. I pretty much think I'm in love. Salsa wasn't amazing but the staff was attentive and courteous enough.

Mexican Street Food and it's delicious! I went for lunch and was pleased with what I saw on the menu. a nice variety of typical Mexican fare and then much more. I went with just three tacos Garden (roasted veg), Bang shrimp, and El Pastor. All three were great I liked that they lightly toasted the flour tortillas and the bang shrimp had just a light batter on it. Another thing I liked was all the Tacos were also available in a bowl or as a burrito. Looking forward to coming back and eating my way through the rest of the menu.

Freaking good! I went up here to meet my brother here today after church. Let me just say their Carnitas taco with the corn tortilla is Bomb!!!! So delicious!! Seasoned just right and juicy!! I also ordered the carne asada taco with a corn tortilla and it was solo yummy! The price for the tacos was 3.50-4 a taco And I so worth it. It was just the perfect amount. Only complaint was the side of queso was a little pricey at $7. Also when I checked in I got a free margarita. I asked for it frozen and it was yummy in my tummy!! I definitely recommend Eating here. The menu was a little over whelming but I just ordered simple and it turned out to totally be worth the visit here. The also have a Mexican band play on the stage during the week. I will be coming back to see them.

We went to Papi Chulo's today after seeing some good Yelp reviews. I think this place has potential, but they just didn't seem to have it together. We were one of about three parties in the restaurant. We used the free Yelp check in Margarita deal, but they were out of the frozen margarita several people ordered. We also could see the food come up from where we were sitting and it was not brought to us for several minutes. Not surprisingly it was only warm by this point. I had the pork belly and shrimp tacos. They were good in spite of not being as hot (temperature) as they should have been. I may give this place another try at a busier time.

Decided to go to Papi Chulos after reading about it on yelp, seeing the guy with the sombrero holding the sign on Southside and hearing about it from a family member. I looked up the menu prior to arriving and was very excited and had no idea what to get, it all sounded so good. Upon arriving, it must have been a slow night because we were honestly the only people there. We sat down and ordered the fresh guacamole which was delicious, but NEEDS TO BE PROPORTIONED BIGGER for the price ($7.50). I can go to Cantina Laredo and pay 10 bucks for 3 or 4 times the guacamole. The salsa was fantastic snd the chips came out warm. We then ordered the street corn small plate for 4 dollars and that was amazing. The mayonnaise based sauce that came to the side was perfect by itself! I ordered the Wet Southern Bell Burrito ($9.00). The burrito itself is delicious with the fried chicken inside, however it can seriously do without the nappa cabbage slaw, which I think took away from the "southern" aspect in the burrito. The other person in my party ordered 2 tacos, the Al Pastor ($3.50) and the Carnitas ($3.00). I tried both and they were delicious. Our waiter was fantastic, very helpful and funny! I enjoyed his presence during my dining experience. The vibe of the inside of the restaurant is very nice and I hope to come back when it's buzzing with other customer's energy! All in All, A- but still 5 stars. If the two suggestions I made are fulfilled, Id give this place an A++ and 7 Stars, We'll wait and see!

Nice place and it is got a good front patio for enjoying the Florida weather. The food was bland and I ordered for a fajita which was not sizzling but full of OIL when I was served(the waitress who served us food told us that the fajita was sitting in the kitchen for long time and all the sizzling was gone !!!!) - I did not expect something like that to be told to a customer. The only thing I like about the place a nice patio in the front !

Went here after I saw the Margarita check in special. Very disappointed with everything overall. Service was slow, the manager had to step in several times when food or service was taking awhile, food was bad including a burrito with mostly rice and only 3 pieces of steak, it took 15 mins to get 2 beers and a margarita, and it took 10 minutes to cash our check. And there were only 3 other parties in the entire restaurant. If it was busy, I understand things happen, but this is ridiculous.

this place has every Mexican dish imaginable and in every combination. I had the teriyaki pork belly taco bowl and it was very flavorful . the decor hasn't changed since this place was urban flats except for the pictures. waitstaff was knowledgeable and attentive.

We visited twice a month ago and I reviewed them well but mentioned areas for improvement. The managers listened and applied the suggestions. The salsa this time has a full balanced flavor but my kids could still enjoy it, and the margaritas were now strong enough that my kids could NOT enjoy them. The great things: vast and cozy outdoor seating great for family with kids or just a chill party. Attentive friendly service. Really great tacos with lots of options for reasonable prices. Also, kids eat free! Our little one got a cheese quesadilla that was fabulous; they didn't hold back on quality cheese for the one year old! Every element of the tacos is thoughtful. The lightly pickled cabbage adds some sweet and sour to counterpoint the fresh proteins, then the bite of the cheese puts it over the top. Choose flour or soft or crunchy corn tortilla for the perfect texture for each. I recommend the diver (scallop) and the bangin shrimp. My go-to Mexican order is the chiles poblanos and they did these right. The batter is light and crisp and just the right amount of cheese. The rice and beans are worth eating, and it is plated beautifully and for function. Overall, a great place to go for tacos and street corn and ceviche. We have gone three times and will go again as the tacos are all as good as or better than Tacolu's.

There has never been a restaurant that I have given one star as I always can justify poor quality...until now. The service was absolutely atrocious. I think we saw our server once in a thirty minute period. When we finally did get service, it was another half hour to see her and get our food. After the meal, we went to the bar. As hard as it is to believe, the experience got even worse. The bar was extremely understaffed, the bartenders were taking shots behind the bar, and the average wait to be recognized was 20 minutes. When we did have a bartender come to us, we ordered two tequila shots. The bartender brought them to us, with the tab - he had upsold the shots without even asking- twenty one dollars a shot, and there was no management on site for us to dispute. I would never go here again or recommend this establishment.

The service was pretty decent. LOVED the cheese dip and the salsa. Both have a lot of flavor. It's clean inside and out. Has a very nice outside dining area. At about 10 o'clock they turned the lights down and the music up so turned into a club kind of scene. I had the chicken quesadilla. It was really good and very juicy. The margaritas were decent. The special price beers came in a pretty small cup so about the same price as a regular prices beer which comes in a normal glass.

Went there for lunch with my coworker and we both were very disappointed by the quality and taste of the food. The meat inside the tacos was super dry and almost tasted like it was left overs from the day before. Definitely not coming back!

Loved it! After a loonnng, frustrating day at work I was delighted to have the BEST SHRIMP ENCHILADA OF MY LIFE! It has a nice kick to it and the proportion was perfect. I usually don't each much but I just couldn't stop eating. Can't wait to try something else on the menu! Taco-Lu can't compete with this food.

Were should I start? This was my first time at this restaurant I have heard a lot of good things about the food and drinks. Me and my wife came for dinner yesterday. The chips and salsa was ok but very spicy,so we asked are server and she had gave us the wrong salsa. We had the margaritas that was horrible tasted like water and sugar. My wife had three tacos the bang shrimp, pork belly, and fish all were not that good to much of there slaw is what they called it. But I don't know what it was. I had a steak and chicken fajitas the steak was over cooked. Me and my wife will not be returning to this restaurant.

I love funky tacos, but there's just some flavors that don't mix. Never order the slaw on your tacos. The seasonings are really awful and leave a terrible after taste. I'm not sure how great the rest of the food may taste, but make sure to leave off the slaw/greens on your tacos. Yuck!

We went there Saturday night to enjoy the Latin band. The music was great, but that's where it stops. I showed up with a large party, while we were waiting for our table we got some drinks from the bar. Their sangria isn't good, very weak. Their margarita basically tasted like I was sipping on pure sugar water. So I gave up on drinks that night. We finally get our table and the server didn't give us menus, or utensils. Finally we received everything after about 15 mins. We order the queso, grilled corn, the camarones street taco, and a pulled pork burrito. My husband enjoyed the burrito. The queso was barely warm and tasted like it had been sitting in a pot all day, the camarones soft taco was soggy and under seasoned, the corn was pretty good. Service was just terrible! We won't be returning.

I went in late at night, an hour before closing on a Friday night and got the worst service I have ever experienced. Not one server could help me at the host stand with my to go order, after at least 2 saw me standing up there looking at a menu i grabbed myself, because none of the servers got one for me. After going to the bar to try and place my order since no one would help me up front, the female bartender only talked to her 2 co-workers that were up there too. I stood directly in front of her with money in my hand, we made eye contact, but that was it. She never finished her own conversation, which started after i got there, and never acknowledged me. The conversation was about a bachelorette party, so it wasn't even relevant to work. II was the only customer at the bar as well. I got pissed off and left. It was a complete waste of my time to stand in there for 10 minutes to get ignored, while there were only 4 other customers in there. First time visit and i will not be back nor recommend it to anybody.

Worst food and service ever! I don't even know why they are even classified as Mexican food because they are far from it, from the quality, price, portions, and flavor. They are completely off. Their tacos are overfilled with unnecessary toppings to compensate for the low quality and quantity of meat. I ordered quesadillas , and I'm not exaggerating when I opened the quesadillas to check the quantity of meat, I only saw 1 small slice of meat per quesadilla. They made a new order and the meat was uncooked. I simply asked to disregard my order.. They didn't even offer a complimentary or discounted meal. Overrated and over priced!!

Pretty good tacos, good tasting tortillas. Carnitas tasted a little funny, scallop taco was good but was hoping for great. Carne Asada had good taste but the meat was in strangely shaped chunks. Chips and salsa were better than most places. This was a late lunch on a rainy Saturday with not many diners there, may be better for dinner.

I am not a fan of Mexican Food, it's in the same category as Haggis, Camel, and Rattlesnake all of which I have eaten. But when my friends Jerry Watterson and Gary Kovar the brains behind Jacksonville Restaurant Review and Jacksonville Foodie Adventures put on one of their feasts I never miss the opportunity to attend if I am in town. I was wavering on Papi Chulo's thou but I am a big Guacamole and Tequila fan so I had nothing to loose and something to learn. There was a great turn out about 35 to 40 people. That's how respected this dynamic duo is when it comes to food. Once everyone was settled and had a few very nicely made Margaritas, which were included in the ticket price, them food started to flow. We started with the Guacamole Flight - 3 amazing handmade guacamole. These were served with some of the tastiest chips I have ever sampled. Made fresh in house it was very different f some of the commercial chips served around town. Next we moved on to the Carne Asada Fries - Like Nachos, but fries, these were served with a spicy queso blanco.....Already I am being converted but we still have a way to go. For our third sample Mexican Street Corn - Whole Ear Corn. This was the exact moment of conversion, well at least for this restaurant. I was introduced to Mexican Street Corn in Oaxaca Mexico one Christmas, and ate 3 to 4 ears each day I was there, 7 days exactly. Having tried this dish in several of the more popular restaurants around town. Papi Chulo's came the closest to being authentic. I would have been happy to stop there, but we moved on to even more food. Duck Dynasty Taco - It's a Duck Taco...Tacos are meh to me but Duck is one of my favorite proteins. This hit the mark a delightful combo of Duck breast, mahogany sauce, Napa cabbage slaw topped with cilantro lime sauce, pickled red onions and cotija cheese. The combo of flavors was delightful, Southern Bell Taco -Fried chicken tossed in the mahogany sauce, Napa cabbage slaw topped with avocado ranch. I tried to get the gentleman sitting next to me to give his up but he was not very cooperative. next up a nod to Jamaica via the Bob Marley Taco - Jerked Chicken, Plantains this was my favorite, spicy with a kick needed nothing added. Just when I thought I could hold no more I looked at the planned menu and realized there was still more to come. Carnitas Enchilada - Brick Oven Baked, a killer combo of pulled pork, topped with queso, ranchero salsa served with cilantro lime and beans. The meat tender and well seasoned salsa rich and tart and the beans well flavored. Finally for the last flavor of the night Dessert Flight - Traditional Flan, Tres Leches Cake, Aztec Chocolate. I saw the word Chocolate and became dizzy with delight. No Flan or Cake for me it was the Chocolate, well the chocolate was not this gigantic piece of heaven I had in my mind but a nicely flavored chocolate cake. I had to pass but others delighted in each of the offerings. This was a somewhat ah ha moment for me. There is a place in town I can now say yest to when my friends suggest we do "Mexican". I also would be remiss if I did not give a nod and shout out to the staff. They had a full restaurant as well as our large group to keep happy that night. IMHO they did a jam up job and I would feel comfortable taking my dining group there for dinner one night.

To sum it up, great tasting food, service could definitely improve, and they were out of a few things on the menu. I would come again for the food, but not sure how long this place will last. Food: They brought out the usual chips and salsa for starters. Salsa was decent, comparable to La Nop or Salsas without a kick. We were in a big group, so we ordered a flight of guacamole and flight of ceviche for appetizers. They had 3 different types of guac-- regular, honey mango, and with crab meat. Although they were all pretty tasty, I liked the honey mango the best. They also had 3 types of ceviche and honestly, I don't remember what the different flavors were because I didn't order it and it was far away from where I was sitting, although I tasted some and liked that as well. I also ordered their Mexican street corn, which I was expecting to be in a bowl, but it was actually on the cob. It was pretty delicious. I also had a carnitas and carne asada soft tacos on corn tortilas, which had a great flavor too. Aaaaand... I also ordered tres leches (I was obese in my past life... and might end up being so in this life). Received a big ass piece, which was also tasty, but it was more dense than I would've liked it to be... and almost maybe put me into a diabetic coma because I ate most of it myself. Service: A few people in our party were waiting for us at the bar when we got there, then we moved to a table. We had menus and sat for at least 10-15 minutes before someone in our party had to get an employee's attention to ask for service. It's possible they were waiting for everyone to arrive before serving us, but no one even came by to greet us or ask for drinks. When we did finally order, they were out of one of the dishes one of the guys had his heart set on, heh. :( When I ordered dessert, me and a friend each ordered fried ice cream only for the server to tell us they were out of that also. The server was really nice and ended up not putting our drinks on the menu to make up for their lack of items, but overall, service was pretty slow and I would cut them more slack if it was busy, but it wasn't busy at at all and it was a weeknight. I also understand larger parties are harder to serve, but I think we were pretty easygoing. I would like to come back and try other options--- hopefully they'll be available -- but like I said, not sure how long this place will last if the service and marketing for it don't improve soon.

Highly recommend going on Taco Tuesday. The tacos are pretty big and really good. I tried 4 different tacos and all of them were good. The best one was a jerk chicken taco. The queso was alright, however I prefer the white Mexican cheese queso. Happy hour drink specials were really good but I just missed them by a few minutes.

Definitely worth a shot. Been there twice and both times had the ceviche and the guacamole flights. First time was amazing the second the ceviche was off the charts great the guacamole was so so. Service was ok the guy that took our was maybe there to fill in. The girl that came back was awesome. She brought the owner over when we said that the guac was off. He not only took it off of our check but bought us two shots of cabo. Those kind of touches Will keep us coming back for more.

Last time I was at Papi Chulo's I wasnt that happy. I can say now that last time must have been a fluke. Today my friends and I went in for lunch after a movie. The chips were warm and the mild and hot salsa was great. The hot salsa has a "kick" to it which I love. The guac is some of the best I've had in a Jacksonville restaurant. Again I tried the Bang Shrimp and American tacos and they were excellent like the first time I had them. Not only was the food visually appealing but much like the 1st two times I went the ingredients tasted fresh and flavorful. One friend had the Garden Burrito and the other also had the American taco. Both said their food was good and that they'd be back. The service was great. Kirsten was amazing and kept the refills coming before we even had to ask. I will definitely be back and I will definitely keep bringing folks in cause the food is really that good.

Great, fast service, really unique items not offered in the usual Mexican restaurant and they use quality, fresh ingredients. The Mexican Street Corn is so good I tried to go home and try to replicate it. The guacamole flight, was a great way to try all three flavors which were delicious! I had the yellow fin bowl and my boyfriend had the duck dynasty bowl. Both we will go back for. Excellent, food and a great menu that is different than what you're used to getting.

I have been there three times since they opened and haven't had one bad meal yet. The customer service is impeccable and it's a friendly non-threatening atmosphere. Their drinks and food make it. It's great for a date, casual get-together or for after movie drinks since it's near Tinseltown. Oh and did i mention...their Tres leches cake is a must have!

The food was good. The service was excellent. We had some ceviche, guacamole, tacos, and margaritas. Highly recommend the street corn, favorite thing we had. My GF is gluten free, so we got the corn tortillas. They may have some wheat in them though so watch out if you are truly allergic and not just gluten sensitive. Margaritas were also really good. Great location next to Tinseltown so a good spot for dinner/drinks before a show.

Excellent food at a good price. My wife and I ate lunch here yesterday and were both very pleased with our meals. She had a fajita salad, which she loved, and I had the absolute BEST chile rellenos I've had in 20 years! They were listed as a dinner only choice, but the waiter said they would be happy to make any dinner selection at lunchtime on request. We will be coming back soon. Also, the margaritas were very good.

I seriously didn't think I could find more Mexican fare that I would say is my new favorite. But here it is. First it's always all about the Salsa and they deliver. The mexican corn is soo tasty. Great service. Off the beaten path but worth looking for. Shredded chicken you find in most Mexican restaurants can't hold a candle to Papillion Chulos.

Cons: very expensive. Horrible service. if you order 2 for 1 happy our drinks, and your server doesn't come by to get you your second one before 7, they consider it your loss, and you won't get your second drink without an argument. Pros: food is good. I had seen their food posted all over my Instagram several weeks. It was a cluster F!! On NYE, we finally had the time to try it. It was 6pm and only three tables were full. We were seated, then 15 minutes later, the girl who sat us asked if we'd been waited on. She left, came back and took our order, not telling us about anything, knowing this was our first visit, since I told her on our way to our table. She asked if we wanted cheese and salsa, and it's a good thing I'm accustomed to Mexican food or I would have thought the cheese was free. Anyway, My husband sees its two for one happy hour so he orders a margarita. She still told us nothing about any specials or what she's recommend. I fact, I'm certain she was drunk, since she kept getting words mixed up and forgetting things, and not in a "I'm brand new here" kind of way. We order our food and it's good. I'm not sure about $4-$6 a taco good though! My Asian pork taco had the fattiest meat on it, I could hardly eat it. The Bob Marley was really good and so was the street corn. Moving on, we sat with our drinks empty for about 20 minutes until my husband asked her for refills. Also? He ordered the 2 for 1 margarita at 6:15 and when he asked for his second one, because it's 2 for 1, she said "is it 7 yet? If it's not 7 you can get the second one free." Wait?! What?! That's not AT ALL how that goes. During our 1 hour visit, two other tables were sat and both tables had problems, not to mention the couple who sat at their table for 20 minutes and walked out because nobody said a word to them. This wasn't the end, our server brings our check...well, she brought the black book but no check. Seriously, this girl was drunk. We were there for well over an hour, ordering one alcoholic drink, 5 tacos, and an order of street corn. $56!!!!! I've never spent more than $20 for more food at a Mexican restaurant nor have I waited longer than 10 minutes.

So excited to try this place after hearing good reviews, and I was not disappointed! The chips and salsa were perfect. The fresh guacamole was ok, but a little too wet. (I like mine mostly avocado with fresh add-ins). The Mexican Street Corn was tasty, if a bit messy, but the Bang Shrimp taco was absolutely divine! My friend got the California Dreamer bowl, and it was loaded with yumminess! Plenty to choose from, but definitely worth the visit. I will be back soon!

This was just an OK experience. We went for Taco Tuesday and were surprised that a Mexican spot was playing live rock music on Taco Tuesday. I ordered the Margarita which was horrible. And we ordered the all you can eat tacos. The combinations of the tacos either had too much of one thing or not enough of another. The jerk chicken taco was so spicy, but didn't have enough cilantro and cabbage to keep it cool. I also ordered the queso which claims to be Chihuahua cheese. I've been to Chihuahua and had that cheese, and it tasted nothing like this. And lastly, we ordered the Mexican street corn. So much garlic, you can barely eat it. It was basically all garlic and mayo. They have a great concept and the ability to be great, but they need to take their time on food prep. The service is extremely slow, nothing comes out as planned. I would go back to give it another shot, but def wasn't a good experience.

We were a little skeptical at first because the restaurant was empty. But to our surprise this worked to our advantage. Our server was able to provide us with extra attention and we very much appreciated it. When you walk in, you will immediately notice that the restaurant decor provides a nice Authentic Mexican appeal. It is vibrant and colorful and there are subtle displays of Mexican art throughout. There is good variety on the menu. From flautas to tacos, quesadillas to burritos, and ceviche to guacamole. This restaurant is sure to have something for everyone at your table. We had a party of 7 and a baby. The salsa and chips tasted fresh. Almost like it was prepared right before they brought it out. Each plate came out hot and had it's own unique plating. We ordered chicken enchiladas, chicken quesadillas, fish and shrimp tacos, scallop tacos (UNIQUE!!), duck burrito (very UNIQUE!!), taco bowls, and fajitas. All were so awesome! We also liked the fact that you can try the same dish three different ways. For example the duck dynasty dish can be eaten as a taco, a burrito, or a taco bowl. There were at least a dozen different dishes like this. The portions are pretty large. So make sure you are hungry or look forward to leftovers! We are in town for a few days and look forward to going back and trying new items on the menu before we leave. The duck dynasty burrito is a must!!!

I expected a lot from this place. Reality, the interior of the building is well put. Now let me get to what really matters, their food. Not Mexican AT ALL!!! I am from Mexico, and the quality of the food here is just HORRIBLE. It literally taste as if i opened a can or box of food. I honestly rather go to the Nopalera! on them Margaritas...I ordered their Signature Margarita, which took, literally 20 minutes to make, and I had to send right back, it tasted like Crystal Light Lemonade, then the manager or who ever the short guy is, came by with a shot of tequila. THAT'S NOT WHAT I WANTED. Instead, I asked for a Corona. How do you NOT MAKE GOOD MARGARITAS? come on!!! That same evening I saw a roach on the floor. On my end I WILL NOT BE BACK FOR NOTHING. Which caused me to feel some kind of way regarding their food, I didn't eat, i ended up leaving with my friends. They were grossed out as well. On a more positive note to whoever is the owner, nice place, but poor service, bad food quality and CLEAN UP THE PLACE.

I would not call this Mexican food, more like a want to be Mexican place. First off, we had made reservations a few days in advance so the staff should have been ready for a big party. They were not, we waited a good 3o minutes before we sat down. It took a long time for everything including drinks, chips and everything in between. It seemed like they were very short handed. The chips were good and the regular salsa was ok, kinda of on the sweet side. The menu looked like a fast food menu. Most of the food had a twist to it. As in fruit in it or sweet something in it. The food took forever to come out. And I will have to say it was not worth the time. The fajitas were taste less, the chicken, stake and shrimp were very blah. It was not worth the $19.00 for the meal. The black beans had a sweet taste to them and the rice was definitely no where close to Mexican rice. The service was slow but I think it was because they were very short handed. Our server was fantastic when he did not forget things. All in all, it was an OK place but definitely not Mexican food. And not a place to go with a big party unless you are OK waiting.

My husband and I were excited to try out this new place. It's been there for a little while now, so we were confident they had worked out any menu and service kinks by then. We went on a Friday night, and while we were on the later side of things for dinner, around 8:30pm or so, the place was pretty empty. We took up residence at the bar, and were served with a smile and friendly conversation by the bartender. We enjoyed a cocktail, and upon the his recommendation, discovered a favorite new bourbon. We ordered the queso with chips and salsa; it had more depth of flavor than your typical white cheese based queso. I ordered the brisket taquitos and my husband had the shrimp ceviche. We enjoyed both items quite a bit! Brisket was very flavorful, and the taquitos were nicely cooked. This was my husband's first time trying ceviche, and he was rather impressed by it, though with nothing to compare it to, he said he'd definitely go back and have it again. Thank you, Papi Chulo's for a nice dinner out! We enjoyed it, and we'll be back!

Ate there on a Saturday night at 8pm, the restaurant only had two other tables there and the musician did a sound check for almost an hour. Our service was poor, the waitress was incredilbly unattentive. We ordered a steak burrito and a taco bowl, it took 45 minutes to get our food which came out cold and flavorless. We got the mexican street corn too and it was a burned corn cob rolled in mayonaise, also cold. No spices, or anything to add flavor. We were really disappointed, the menu looked fantastic.

This taco place is amazing. I think it's just about as good as taco lu. My husband thinks it's better in some ways. Love the bob Marley, bang shrimp, California dreamer. Quesadillas were good as well.

They had great reviews on Yelp and a free margarita with check in, so we went Sunday afternoon. We were one of only a few tables, but the food came out slowly. Our waiter was great though. With the free margarita, you had to get two tacos which were ok. The salsa was fresh, but if you like it spicy, ask for the green salsa to mix it with. I've heard they have salsa dancing, so I'd probably be more apt to check it out on a weekend night and not midday.

I had the most amazing tacos today for lunch! The Duck Dynasty, Asian Pork Belly and Bang Shrimp were my favorites. The food came out quick which was a plus for my lunch break. The prices are cheap and my server was great! I'll definitely be back again with my work crew next time.

Opted to try out Papi Chulo's as I had heard a few decent experiences, as well as wanting Mexican before going to see a movie at nearby Tinseltown. Being that it was a Saturday night we decided to make reservations...definitely not needed considering the place was not busy at all. Granted the space is large, however there was ample staff on hand. Ended up ordering a few different tacos and a Mexican Cobb salad. The beef brisket tacos were decent, however rather salty. Pork taco was good, and last the carne asada was not impressive in the least bit. Very poor cut of meat, and just poor presentation of a easy to conquer Mexican dish. Both my girlfriend and I decided that the Mexican Cobb Salad was the best item we received, even though the dressing that is stated to come with the salad per the menu is apparently either not available, or not a true representation of the dressing itself. Both myself and the waitress were equally confused. Considering the lack of tables our server had, I wouldn't expect such poor service. 20 minutes after we were clearly done with our meal(s), our waitress finally appeared after the manager finally cleared our plates. The quickest service of the night was her bringing the check, and running my card. I will say, I am a very reasonable client for a restaurant to take care of. This is largely due to my extensive hospitality experience in various capacities. However, I will not be heading back to Papi Chulo's in the future, especially given the numerous choices of Authentic Mexican we have in Jacksonville, with far superb service and food quality.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
