Harpoon Louie's is great! There burgers are awesome, wings too. Just a good old fashioned bar. TVs for sports and 2 for 1 bears everyday all day. Definitely a must do!

I don't go here enough. I guess that's a good compliment for a restaurant and actually what pushed me to give five stars--everytime I go here or even hear it mentioned, I think, "Dang, I don't go there enough." My husband is sold on the Backyard Burger [$5.99 and its Angus Beef]. Like seriously, he don't even need a menu. He knows what he wants, sold on it. I like to mix it up a little more, but usually go with the blackened fish bites or wings. Also worth mentioning is the seemingly constant drink specials, always a deal. When the weather isn't too hot, the deck over looking the water [its just a small creek, but, man, its a deck over water, I'll take it] is the place to be. Entertainment comes in the form of the resident cats that seem to live under the porch and hunt the creekside and scavenge the deck. For a relaxing good time with good food [especially midweek] its hard to beat this place. Seriously, I don't go enough.

I love Harps! This is my husband and mines favorite place to eat after a long day at work. Totally relaxing environment, fabulous food, good 2-4-1's. Everything is good here. Blackened fish nuggets are to die for. Fresh and spicy. The backyard burger is always perfectly cooked. Honestly I can say that I have never had a bad meal here, EVER. This is a great neighborhood joint. It is especially nice during the early spring and late fall when the weather is beautiful. Ohh how I love this place.

This place isn't bad but it isn't great. We both had burgers that were big, juicy and tasty. The server wasn't too invested in us. The menu wasn't all that interesting. The best part was the outdoor seating! Great on a pretty day and pet friendly. I was thoroughly enthralled with the woman who brought her cat and a bag of Meow Mix. It riled up the dogs on the patio, but I loved it. Way to go, crazy cat lady!

Went there with my dog. We sat outside. She was as rude as could be but the waitstaff was very kind about it. They suggested a burger which was very satisfying. I would definitely go again, just leave the dog behind. The patrons were excessively pleasant.

I had a relaxing dinner outside on their porch last night. I was surprised by all their vegetarian options and one vegan option. I had the fried shrimp which was definitely fresh and not frozen. I'm looking forward to going back to try the Vegan BBQ sandwich.

Harpoon Louie's is the love! Its within walking distance for me, which rocks, and the outdoor seating by the water is really nice. I've never sat inside, but from what I've seen it looks nice. They have a good beer selection and two-for-one specials on domestic drafts at times. The food is great, too. Their burgers are really tasty and the onion rings are huge! My friend says the grouper nuggets are amazing but I haven't tried them. I recommend the chicken parm panini, really great! The service is good, too. The servers are really sweet, timely, and efficient. They have live music sometimes, too, and the bands are good.

Good place, had a acoustic singer out singing some good tunes. I recommend sitting on the patio over looking the creek.

We came here to kick off my boyfriend's birthday month instead of our usual Brick or Perfect Rack dinner gig. The food was OK. Not terrible, but really just OK. Somehow the burger just didn't do it for us. Perhaps it was the burger and definitely the bun. If you do not enjoy a toasted bun on the outside, you probably won't enjoy this one. Pasta salad was simple and good. We had also ordered the sampler appetizer (all fried, but the sauces were yummy) and the chicken special with a white sauce. The PLUS SIDE, the service is impeccable when we went, we enjoyed all of the sauces they offered, the outside patio area where one can smoke, have a cold pitcher of beer and enjoy the weather is a treat, the one man band that afternoon was really, really good (sang some great songs & had a super nice voice) and a very laid-back atmosphere add to our experience. It just didn't seem like the food was made with a whole lot of love and was apparent for our first time here. That sucks. However, since it is within our neighborhood--we will probably give this place another try as the weather becomes cooler...I mean, everyone deserves a second chance, right?

First of all, I don't take pictures of my food, I think it's weird and I never do it because when I am actually out having dinner with people I really want to be with, I don't take the time to even have my phone at the table...with that being said, I love Harp's! Some of the best Ranch you will ever eat, the hamburgers are awesome, fish nuggets at lunch time are unbelievable and service is always great. I can also tell you the prices at happy hour are totally worth the visit and I would say go after work for some cold draft beer.

Well.... The waitress we had was super nice & attentive. They were out of the vegi burgers which is our whole reason for the 3 of us going. Plan B. Two of us got the Spring Salad. Huge disappointment. Small serving size, & nothing fancy about it. The home made dressing was average at best. Kind of watery taste.. Neither were impressed. Fish tacos were tasty but dry. Had to get extra salsa to help. I wouldn't go back... The BBQ sauce is a popular store bought brand, so the vegi burger is just that.. A vegi burger ripped apart & bbq sauce stirred in to it. Not super original. I went home & had lunch after...

I've been to Harpoon Louie's before... but had no idea the deck wrapped all the way around the back like that! Killer space to sit outside and enjoy the Florida weather... and my little yelper was welcome as well. Harpoon Louie's definitely has that "neighborhood pub and restaurant" feel.... We started off with a few brews, the chicken nachos and some Cajun ranch wings. The chicken on the nachos was really tender and moist, seasoned with some nice Mexican spices, but this needed more (a lot more) of the cheese sauce. And maybe some jalapenos. They were ok... but not the greatest. The wings, oh man. I am pretty picky about my wings. What they had going for them is there was just enough breading (not too much), cooked perfectly, they were a good size, but the Cajun ranch flavor was a bit of a let down. It seemed the ranch mellowed out the Cajun flavor so much, there was no spice to it. Meh. I would come back to try the "hot" flavor... spice me up baby! For our entrees, we decided to order the chili cheese dogs and one of their "famous" burgers, with intentions to share. It is pretty awesome that for under 10 bucks, you get not one, but two chili cheese dogs! The dogs were good, chili was solid, but next time I will ask for some raw onions sprinkled on top. The burger was the blackened bad boy... and it had a lot of blackened spice to it. Not hot, just spiced. We ordered medium rare, was cooked as such. It's not a mind-blowing experience though, if that is what you are looking for. The fries were hot and crispy and delish, pretty good onion rings as well. This would be an ok spot to hang out casually, with the pup outside, over a few beers and their hottest wings.

Love love love this place. Haha okay probably not that much but this place is awesome. They have some pretty good food. Carls way wings are pretty delish and the burgers never seem to disappoint. They have a pool table which is pay per game. The juke box can be user controlled(country is always a good choice) enough tvs to allow you to watch whatever you want from wherever you are sitting. Drinks specials on the daily. There has only been one bad waitress there and gave her a chance twice so whenever we go we would just ask for someone else. Great place to bring some friends or just casually dine!

Harpoon Louie's is a neighborhood staple, but it's suffered from its old owner's shortcomings for years. The "new" owners have had it for over a decade, and have combatted the establishment's former reputation with higher food quality, with simple preparations that hide great flavor, and slow but steady improvements to the restaurant. Harp's (as it's known by all long time locals) is the kind of place that only locals know about, and while they're glad to have a neighborhood following, they always seem to welcome new faces! Boasting a solid menu prepared by their line cooks and Allison (the long time matriarch of Harp's grill), it's food that can surprise newcomers because of the casual surroundings. For a long time it was the only place in Riverside that I would eat fish or wings. The selection of burgers is also solid, but there are two stand out items on the menu: 1. Their grouper nuggets (prepared grilled, lightly blackened or blackened) are great with the freshly cooked veggies for a light lunch selection. *Pretty much any catch of the day is going to treat you right. 2. Their "Carl's Way" wings are my absolute all time favorite wings! With a great sauce with a bit of bite that includes garlic and Parmesan cheese, get these whenever you see Allison in the kitchen and you will NOT be disappointed! Don't mind the daily regulars at the bar. They're here for the same reason you are: Good food, good people, and (if you're so inclined) cold beer.

I love this place. They have a great happy hour with food and drink specials. Nice outside deck with music on the weekends. Also one of the only places in Avondale that has delicious blackened fish. Check out the catch of the day. Yum. Wings, burgers, salads and steak tacos are awesome as well.

Harpoon Louie's has been a staple for my group of friends that have lived here basically their whole lives. One of our own moved to Seattle a few years back, and he's in town for the week and wanted that same comfortable atmosphere that Harpoon Louie's can provide. A few nights ago, the temp was just below freezing. Today, it is absolutely gorgeous out so the five of us opted for an outdoor table on the patio. There is just enough sunlight and shade for whatever your preference is. In any case, there was no way that we were going to be sitting inside today. As for food, everyone else ordered some vegan mozzarella sticks and while I got a cup of chili for appetizers. The chili was good. I like a bit of a kick in mine, which this didn't have, but it wasn't bad. Everyone in our group ordered a burger for their meal and boy were they juicy. While it was good, it really wasn't a grand slam for me. I wish there were more choices when it came to burgers. There are only four that you can choose from, and none really caught my eye. There wasn't much on the rest of the menu that seemed to float my boat either. Just seems to be plain American faire at Harps. I was also a bit confused by the daily special menu that left out both Monday and Tuesday. I really wasn't impressed by the service. We seemed to be left alone for a lot longer than I think we should have been. I guess I'm used to waiters and waitresses stopping by periodically just to see if everything is okay. Here, though, there seemed to be long stretches without our waiter coming by. I'd have to agree with the "what you see is what you get" attitude about Harps. I feel they could do so much better, though.

I've been here 3 times hoping that the last time was just a bad night. All 3 times I ordered the same thing. Bacon cheeseburger and fries. I was told the restaurant was known for its burgers and figured it be a good choice. I have yet to get a burger that wasn't cooked "well done". First I ordered medium, then I tried medium rare, then I just said "as pink as you can make it". Every time it came out the same. The bacon was hard each time and the fries were always over cooked. Not only was the food a disappointment, but the service was always horrible. It was so bad once that I had to walk to the bar to ask if my server got cut and accidentally forgot to pass us off. We had been sitting at the table with empty glasses and no food for the entire 3rd quarter of a football game. People keep telling me to just order something else or sit at the bar. But if a place can't cook a burger correctly I'm not even going to bother with anything else.

It's all about expectations, folks! My husband and I come here with our daughter and friends about once a week. The service is always weird, the high chairs are always sticky, but the beer is cold and cheap, the French fries are amazing and the porch is so relaxing. It's a hole in the wall, and if you can take it for what it is you'll have a great time.

I went for lunch last Sunday with friends. It was my first time there so I was optimistically expecting a good meal. Instead we got a server who seemed less than enthused to want to practice good customer service. Her attitude was unprofessional and everything was delayed-- coming to our table to take our drink order, refilling drinks, taking our food order and bringing out our food. A table that was seated 15 minutes or so after my table got their food at least 10 minutes before ours came out. We were so hungry. Not once did she come and explain the delay in our order, or regularly check on our table. I got a feta burger that maybe when prepping the ground beef the cook used an ounce of feta per 5 lbs of meat (and i'm being pretty generous when saying an ounce). The burger supposedly had spinach in it as well. When I brought it to the server's attention she assured me that it was in there. I guess I should have carried a microscope. Overall, a less than mediocre experience. My friends were underwhelmed with what they ordered and by the sogginess of the fries and the buns, it was just obvious that our food spent quite awhile under the heat lamp. Next time I will go to The Loop.

Love the blue cheese burgers. Just the right amount of blue cheese and cooked to perfection! With the lightly battered onion rings you've got a perfect burger meal. I've eaten at Louie's twice in the last two weeks. It's laid back atmosphere and great service makes it a great place to meet with friends. The seafood is great and also the shrimp salad on croissant with pasta salad. You can be sure that I'll return to Louie's for the best burger around.

Nice neighborhood place to have a few beers and a bite to eat. Burgers are consistently good. The other sandwiches I have tried were fairly good also. For some reason I love their pasta salad that comes as a side with the burgers or sandwiches. It's nothing fancy but I really like it as do several of my friends. Nice place to sit outside when the weather is right grab a good burger and a couple brews. Service can be iffy. Sometimes it's really good & sometimes leaves something to be desired. Overall it's a great place for what it is..a neighborhood place that has a friendly crowd and decent food ( :

One of my favorite places to eat! I recommend the fish sandwich or even the fish nuggets. The staff has always been friendly and helpful. I tried the burger because of the best burger contest, but I wasn't impressed. I'm sticking to the fish sandwich or the taco salad. The outside seating is nice and when they have live music playing it's even better.

A lot of people must really love this place because every time I pass by, especially on weekends, the parking lot is full. This is always a good first indicator of how good a restaurant is. It could be the nice outdoor seating areas where people can bring their canine friends or maybe the large selection of beer. The first time we pulled in, I was craving good fried fish in particular and seafood in general. We never made it in the door. As we waited for some people to exit, we heard really loud rock music coming from inside. Several years ago this would not have mattered to us and would have actually been preferred, but now that we get the senior citizen discounts and since we had our 7 year old grandson with us, we hopped back in the car and headed on down the road. Several months later, we decided, what the heck, we would see what all the fuss was about. As it turns out, the classic rock music comes from a juke box which does not play all the time. We arrived about 2:30 pm on a Saturday, just right for a late lunch or mid-afternoon nosh. We sat inside where we still had a good view but were protected from the unpredictable weather. The interior is not fancy but clean and comfortable. We were not expecting and did not want a fancy place. We were there for the food. The staff were friendly, but our waitress forgot to bring my husband's beer and he had to flag her down. Although all the stools at the bar were taken, the rest of the place was almost deserted. I was disappointed to find that oysters were not on the menu! I figured that with several big motorcycles in the parking lot, loud classic rock on the juke box, good cold beer . . . I guess that serves me right for making quick assumptions. I had a cup of the crab bisque and, although the base was a bit thick, it was fresh and the flavor was good. I thought I detected a hint of nutmeg or other spice. Whatever it was, it worked! I also had a side of their pasta salad which was a huge portion and made with mayo and chopped green bell peppers--also very tasty. My husband didn't see anything on the menu that tickled his fancy, so he ordered a Corona with chips and salsa. I'll bet that if they had raw oysters on the menu, we would have probably eaten at least 4 dozen or more between us and washed them down with several cold ones. As it was, I had only water, and we didn't linger. All in all, this place wasn't too bad, just average, and I will probably go there again.

Ouch. I have worked in this area for years and only dined here once before. Quite honestly, it looked the same as the last time I was here, fairly disheveled, marginally clean with uncleaned tables sitting to the side. However, what saves this place are the wings. We got wings that were fantastic and plentiful enough to take some back to the office. In fact, my coworker dropped me a note during a meeting that he had to have a mid-afternoon snack, which he promptly snuck out pretending he needed to use the restroom. While I am not hurrying back because of the decor, I would like to try more menu items to see if they do more well than just wings.

Love Harpoon Louie's! Helps that I live down the street but I love beer and they just added 25 taps or something. I bring my kids and they love to sit outside and see the creek and listen the live music on Sundays. I like their veggie burger and their wings...love that they have a kids menu and that kids eat free on Monday! The salads are pretty good too and burgers are always a go-to as well. Just had the clam chowder last night and it was delish. Harpoon Louie's is an awesome BOA (between Ortega & Avondale) establishment. Happy to have it in the hood!

The grouper nuggets are great! the sandwiches are also very good. This place is casual with a gourmet flair. The beer is cold and you can sit outside and watch otters in the creek. used to go to this place all the time but moved, still this is worth the drive every now and then. Try the grilled chicken club and get it blackened! Yum !!!

Harpoon Louie's is not trying to be fancy. They might be located in a ritzy part of town, but Louie's is keeping it simple, and it works. I went with three friends, and we all enjoyed our meals. The 2-for-$4 beer special was a pleasant surprise! Our waitress was friendly and receptive to our brand of humor, so that's a plus. As for our meals, I had the hot dogs, which might not seem like much, except that I had been really craving a slaw dog all day, and when I opened the menu and saw that you can get 2 angus beef hotdogs with slaw for 8.99, I was thrilled to say the least! They came with deliciously crispy fries, and I tried a side of the pasta salad as well. The pasta salad is simple, but it was really good! One friend had the fish sandwich, and she really enjoyed it. It was pretty big, she needed a to-go box. The other two both had the Backyard Burger and both really liked it. All in all it was a quick, affordable meal with cheap drinks on the side. We popped in late on a Monday, so the place wasn't exactly hopping, but that seemed to be to our benefit. We'll be back!

I have eaten here before outside in the evenilng, with live music playing, and really enjoyed it. My advice is to go when it is slighlty dark and you can eat outside. This time I went for lunch on a cold Saturday afternoon and in the bright daylight I could see how dirty this place really is. My companion had a Philly cheesteak and did not really enjoy it. I had the Shepard's Pie, which is vegetarian, and I am glad they have this option, but I think it was mainly frozen vegetables and commericially prepared potatoes. The shrimp dishes are better here. I would only go back when the weather conditions are conducive to eating outside.

Went to Harps a week ago. Ordered 20 wings half hot and half med. absolutely no difference. Waitress response, (ya there's not much difference between the two. Then chicken wings taste like fish, (horrible), 2 half filled blue cheese cup per 20 wings, (really). Waitress had no concern of our dislike, did not even offer to bring any extra sauce after asking. Even at a charge. Hands on top of my wine glass. (Gross). Wrote my complaint on my receipt with name and number, no call. Been going to Harpoon for a very long time, don't think we will be going back for a while. Definitely going down hill. Waitress or owner with a phone call could of change this review very easily. Not even an apology. Sad.

After a very positive visit here I thought I would give then a try on some carry out due to being stuck at work. Order the Back Yard Burger and as soon as i opened the container I knew it was going just as good as it looked. Cooked right / 2 big bacon slices. Great job guys will be there a lot more.

I've eaten here twice and so far have not been disappointed. The fish tacos are very yummy, fresh with mango sauce... mmm delish! Last time, I had mozzarella sticks and the grilled wings. The sticks were usual fare, nothing spectacular but the grilled wings were awesome! Very meaty wings with a nice spice rub and kudos for it not being too spicy (yes i order mild!). I already know I'll be coming here on a weekly basis so I'm sure i'll be ordering from the menu a lot. Nice place and the wait staff is very friendly!

It's like a dive bar converted into a restaurant. I love it! There's a jukebox, pool tables, arcade games for the kiddies, and nothing fancy anywhere in sight. Just good ol' fashioned burgers, wings, and beer. There's also outdoor seating available, making Harpoon Louie's a fine place to enjoy a beer on a nice, warm day. I rolled in for dinner with a couple pals on Saturday night and, though I wasn't in the mood for bar food, I figured I could find something I liked. I asked the waitress about the Shepherd's Pie, and she told me that, though it was vegetarian, it was delicious. I went for it, and she was right! Sauteed broccoli, cauliflower, onions and other veggies were nestled underneath a pile of warm, comforting mashed potatoes topped with shredded cheddar cheese. So yummy! Added bonus for giving me a great idea of something to recreate at home. I had an Angry Orchard Cider to drink, which was tasty as always. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience at Harpoon Louie's. From the food, to the service, to the atmosphere, this spot gives off a "what you see is what you get" attitude, and they deliver. I'll definitely be back!

Love the BBQ Bison Burger, Fish Tacos Etc. I've never had a bad experience here. The wait staff is always right-on with their service and they have a good selection of beers (mostly craft selections) if your into that as I am. Also, the patio by the creek is a great place to sit on a warm day and enjoy your meal.

Wow, what a dump! I almost turned and left when we arrived, but because of the reviews, thought I'd give it a shot. What a mistake. It was filthy! The floors were dirty, the tables on the deck were old and cracked. The deck looked like it hadn't been pressure washed in years and there we about a dozen cigarette butts under our table. I ordered the shrimp and grits and it was horrid! The grits were lumpy and I am at a loss as to what sauce they used over the shrimp. It was some gelatinous blob. My wife had the blacked fish and it was way over blackened and too salty. She couldn't even finish it. The only positive is our waitress was attentive and friendly. Frankly, I'd be embarrassed to work there, so kudos! Save yourself the money and go somewhere else.

A group of us at work went here for lunch on a reccomendation from one of the people in our group. I ordered some fried mushrooms for an appetizer and the backyard burger blackened with fries for my entree. The mushrooms came out nice and hot, but the breading was chewy in a way that you knew that it had been frozen for some time and my burger came out well-done instead of the requested medium temp. The rest of our party wasn't pleased with their meals either including the person who recommended it!. Who knows, it could've been an off day for Louie's, but I don't think I'll be coming back.

I was looking forward to this, because I had a few people recommending this place to us. So let's get right to the burger. Out of our group I'm mainly the one who is looking for that wow factor, meaning, what can I put on it or order that makes it different. As you can see from the picture I got it loaded up in addition to chili all over my fries. This was a good burger. It had good taste and was what you are looking for in a burger. Now of course we are not looking for the average burger, but for the ones that stand out. Did this one stand out? Well, it was good all around, but didn't stand out.As one of the burgergeeks uses this for giving his rating. Would I eat a burger here if I'm here, yes. Would I drive here for just the burger, no. So in short do we recommend it? Yes. You won't be disappointed. Is it the best burger in Jacksonville? No. Check us out at burgergeeks.blogspot.com to see other reviews on the hunt for the best burger in Jacksonville.

Could have just been me, but that was the worst "taco salad" I've ever had in my life. The lettuce was wilted, the chips were stale, and I'm pretty sure that the chili came from a can. I was expecting more from all the reviews. The atmosphere was nice and the price ok, but afraid b\c of that salad never going back.

I must say I was a bit disappointed. The Time Union claimed "Best Burger in Jax", that's what I get for listening to a dying medium. Don't get me wrong, the service was just fine, the atmosphere felt like a Clarks Fish camp from 15 years ago before that place turned touristy. Outside seating was a plus as we brought our pup, so... yay for dog friendly places. Back to the matter at hand. I felt brave on this afternoon and ordered the Cajun ranch wings as an appetizer but lo and behold I was met with further disappointment. Though tasty and edible, spicy heat was absent and the lady even gave them a , "meh".

One of my favorite places in Jax. I've never had bad service at this place and I've been going here for over 5+ yrs at least once a month. The food is great. My favorites are the chimichurri steak and the pasta salad. You must go here the 1st weekend of each month when they have their trolley night specials - $1 WINES- need I say more? Plus there's a trolley stop nearby which will be a whole other adventure. Great trivia host on Tuesday nights also. The have multiple vegetarian and vegan options to suite any crowd and have multiple craft beer selections from the local breweries. Great neighborhood place that will always have my business.

Tons of outdoor seating, friendly staff, an expansive menu, great prices - what's not to like about Harp's (that's what the locals call it)? I started with a cup of chili (served w/ tortilla chips) and wings (served with celery and blue cheese or ranch), Karl's way (was instructed to do so by several friends) and both were delicious. Karl's way means that the wings are fried, tossed in a tasty special sauce, THEN grilled and tossed in more sauce then topped with shredded parmesan. Very unique. Very tasty. Double win! Boyfriend had a fish sandwich and fries, his dad had a salad, and I ordered the fish of the day (two HUGE pieces, at that) with vegetables. Everything was good. There is an occasional stray cat, but then again, it is Riverside/Lakeview. It's bound to happen. Great happy hour, too. Bold City Duke's on tap!

I love this place! People are way too finicky in this neighborhood and a good hole in the wall restaurant / pub is hard to find. You've got to try one of their burgers. Angus beef and always cooked to temperature. Sometimes they can undercook and that's ok, better to be safe than sorry.... Best deal though is their lunch. $5 and you have your choice of what to order. I highly recommend their grilled cheese panini....and their pasta salad. Yum, yum, yum! Of course you need to have a few brews there too. Try one of the craft beers, the Full Sail or the Mckenzie's Cider. And the best part is they're all cold. Can't beat a neighborhood dive!
