A few months ago, my wife and I decided to give Genes a try as we had heard good things about their seafood, a staple we happened to love. We now have Gene's Seafood on our list of places to take our out of town guests. An average selection of items were available to try, but after several "I'm going to try" conversations, we settled on their combo for two. Although we know it's not the best for our health, we opted for the "fried" option with fries and cole slaw as sides. On this particular occasion, our male server was OK. Could have been a bit more attentive. Made us feel a bit rushed as well. Hard to fault a food establishment for service personnel as this was the only time we had what I would call sub par service from Genes. Anyway, the food arrived on a huge platter with our individual plates carrying out sides. Portions were very large. The shrimp was some of the best we had ever had. The clam strips were actually tender and the scallops melted in out mouths. The flakey white fish (not sure on the type) was perfectly fried (not the least bit greasy) with a delicate taste. Even the hushpuppies ( the best flavored hushpuppies we have ever had) and seasoned fries were delicious. My only complaint was the cole slaw. The taste was very much to my liking as I prefer sweet slaw. The only issue I had was the texture. Seems to be a growing trend with slaws as most )including Genes) use a processor to chop up the cabbage. I don't like the texture of this as opposed to the shredded cabbage slaw. Bottom line is, we would highly recommend the seafood combo for two. As a matter of fact, we can't get ourselves to try anything else for dinner at Gene's Seafood. The pricing is very reasonable and the fresh food is excellent. We have tried the fish sandwich for lunch ($5.00 with 2 sides / coupon). Love the fish, both blackened or fried (again, fresh, flakey and not greasy). Not a fan of the bun they serve it on. It's too big and overpowering for the fish. It's a shame when you taste more bun than fish. They need to rethink the bun and lighten it up do diners can enjoy the great fish underneath. Not a good balance as it currently is.

If you want a substantial southern style seafood dinner for very reasonable price try this place. Been established many years; seems to have many loyal customers. We had a very good fish dinner, with good fresh sides, and could not eat it all; our to go box was two more meals! Not a romantic setting, but service is fast & courteous. They have a adjoining bar I would not recommend going in there; prices are great, but clientele is uncomfortable to be near due to much swearing etc.

The good thing is that this is a very affordable restaurant. Lunch for two can cost only $20.00. I had the sesame tuna with two sides, green beans and potato salad. The tuna was ok, 3.5/5, beans 3.5/5, needed more flavor, they were too simple, and the salad was good, 4.5/5. Well, it is easy to understand that when one does not pay much, one can not get much, but if you are craving for seafood, and do not feel like spending much, this is the place to be.

I always have been a fan of Gene's, hubby not so much. Tonight though they hit it out of the park. I had the most amazing blackened mahi with crabmeat stuffing and a Parmesan white sauce. Even honey had to admit it was high on the yummy scale. So give them a try, and check out the house specials. We actually came over here to hear the band (Firewater Tent Revival) tonight who are some friends of Mark's.

Being a seafood lover I rarely complain about seafood but this restaurant unfortunately has forced me to. It's not the service since I had a takeout and they were quick and very friendly nor was it the awesome shrimp. It was the unwashed baked potato that came as my side. Not only was it old and the size of a baseball it was also very dirty! It had dirt all over it which ended up my meal. What I recommend is that the potatoes are cleaned then wrapped in aluminum, and don't try to hold on to an old potato it just does t help business! Also the flounder could use a new style batter when fried .

We went to Gene's Seafood to listen to The Firewater Tent Revival. The wife likes Gene's and I'm not a big fan. We have eaten at a few of the Gene's at the Beaches and Arlington and they just don't do it right for me. This time it was just about the same. My fried shrimp were terrible over cooked and tough. On the other hand the wife's Blackened crab Crusted Mahi was fabulous. The fish was cooked well and the white parmesan sauce was fantastic. The place was clean and well maintained with the standard very cool saltwater tank. I love saltwater fish tanks with a dogfaced puffer, some tangs, and a few other very colorful fish. Now to the band. The Firewater Tent Revival is a different band. They call themselves (all 10 of them) a bunch of punk rockers gone rogue. They are truly a knee slappin, beer drinking, good times band. Their music is funny with a Kentucky Bluegrass Twang.

We tried Genes seafood on University Blvd West tonight it was Disgusting!! The food was soggy and greasy with No flavor. The service was horrible. We were not greeted when we came in the manager was to busy playing Candy crush on her iPad , the server was sitting at a booth with a male guest who must have been rather interesting. The server we did get was so lazy he acted as if we were disturbing him. The food came out lacking any kind Of taste or warmth. I have never been to this location and I will never return again. I now understand why the place was completely empty except for the ONE other guest! Maybe if the manager was as good at her job as candy crush the food might be decent !

I'm a huge fan. However, this night we did not eat. We went to the bar and played trivia with my father in law and his "Back Porch Crew". They take their trivia seriously! We had a great time. Service was exceptional and the drinks were very reasonable.

So on the downside, the place is kind of old and feels like an "old school" florida seafood restaurant. You'll find way more families, grandma, grandpas than hipsters, but this place is one of the great values in Jacksonville. I have had the fish sandwich for lunch. But, the $10 Fried shrimp special is the best bargain in town for dinner and so delicious. If you are looking for a family friendly, local kind of hole in wall with great seafood and prices, then give Genes a try!

dont ever try the fried foods here its no difference to other fried foods u eat at a fast food. I think fast food is a lot tastier than their fried (shrimps, frogs, etc). The fries is the only tasty food to eat. Friendly staff though but the fried food is a no-no, a waste of money

Gene's is located in a strip mall so get there early if you're with a large group of people. We had a going away office luncheon with about 20 of us. The fried and broiled seafood is just ordinary -- nothing different compared to any other seafood house. However, we did have to send back the coleslaw as it had a 'spoiled' taste. Guess that may have stirred the bad temperament of our waitress because she was short tempered after that. Our waitress forgot 2 orders. When we mentioned this, she got a little snippy about it. We had ordered early before we arrived so its not our doing. So I had to deduct a star for service and the bad coleslaw. I won't be going back to Gene's but if you're looking for cheap eats and no atmosphere, then Gene's is the place you're looking for.

This isn't a gourmet restaurant. But its GOOD. Real good. They feature FRESH, WILD CAUGHT, Mayport shrimp, and serve it better than almost anyone in town. And you can certainly taste the difference quality ingredients make. Its a busy little place, with many good entrees from which to choose, but really, fried fish is their forte. Catfish, grouper, soft shell crab, even dolphin, Its really all good. Portions are big, prices are low. Service is prompt and friendly. This place is the best at what they do in the southside of JAX in my opinion. And in spite of all the frying odors and grease, the place is CLEAN. Other Jacksonville eateries should take note of this. This location, the only one I have visited, is on University Blvd @ San Jose, but there are other locations, too. I just have to keep coming back, again, and again, and again.... Edited 1/2013 to add: REAL ATLANTIC OCEAN Shrimp $9.95 Mon, Tue, and Sat. Print the coupon here: genesseafoodlakewood.com You'll never be able to stomach Red Lobsters frozen pond shrimp from Asia again.

I've been to several of the Gene's around town over the years. My last visit to this location (5/26) was a disappointment. The shrimp I ordered were terribly overcooked -- tough, chewy, and mostly tasteless. The grits were just average, but the broccoli was interesting -- some unusual (and so far unidentified) spices had been used. The florettes were quite tasty. They get 3 stars on the strength of my past visits.

One of our favorite family dinner meeting places. Gene's has a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere that truly let's the delicious seafood shine. If you love fried gator tail - they have the best in town. And the crab cakes are enormous and amazing. It's no "gourmet" restaurant by any means, but if you are looking for great seafood at a great price...Gene's is the best in Jax. And make sure to try the "Voo-doo Juice" bucket - 7 rums and HEAVEN after a long day in the office :)

If you enjoy saving money while satisfying your seafood craving, then Gene's seafood is the place for you. It's a great place to dine in for lunch! The servers are friendly and the wait time for your food isn't very long at all! (: I recommend getting the fried oysters with a side of coleslaw and baked potato. There are other sides you can choose from: sweet potato, French fries, apple sauce, and green beans. If you like chicken strips, then try the gator tail. In my opinion, they look and taste the same but the gator tail is more tender and has a slight more flavor. The only downside about the orders is that you get more sides than seafood. It would be awesome if they let you choose the option to get more seafood in replace of one of your two sides. I enjoyed the fried oysters but would have enjoyed it more if the fried oysters weren't disappearing from my plate so quickly haha! Other than that, go grab a bite during lunch break for work or in between classes and enjoy some quick, money saving seafood :) !

It seems I have been self assigned two yelp quests. One to seek out the best fried shrimp in town and the best ribs. I want to make those my first 'best of ' lists. So, based on what else but prior yelp reviews, I had to try Gene's. I ordered a combo platter of fried shrimp and broiled scallops. Here's my break down; Service - 3 Stars - I had to send my gumbo back as it tasted sour. My server did not apologize, she just offer, it was just made today. I immediately remembered that old saying, "never order fresh fish on Monday". But I digress, it wasn't Monday. Ambiance - 2.5 Stars - I was seated close to the door of the attached bar/lounge and some loud mouth drunk kept interrupting my dinner. Fried Shrimp - 3 Stars - The portion was fine, I was served 8-9 and they were cooked perfectly They just weren't as flavorful as I would expect a Mayport variety to be and somewhat small. Thats why they call them shrimp. I hate to say the tartar sauce made them passable, but I'll say it. Scallops - 3 Stars - I had asked my server what size to expect and she indicated a half dollar to me. I was disappointed because they were more like quarters. The portion was fine, 8-9, the texture wasn't the best but they tasted good. Cole Slaw - 4 Stars - Nice small chopped, not shredded consistency and a cream, slightly sweet dressing. Hush Puppies - 3 Stars - Good but if there were any onion in them, I missed it. Pups have to have onion. Tartar Sauce - 4 Stars - Very good in it's own style. It had a coconut milk sweetness to it. Completely opposite from the pickle/onion variety I prefer. But it you like coconut fried shrimp, you'll love this dipper. Beer - 5 Stars - $1 a mug for draught, must have been happy hour. The Gumbo - 0 Star - I really tried to eat it thinking it was just fooling my taste buds, but it was very unpleasant, just not palatable. I kept thinking, will this come back (literally) to haunt me sometime in the tonight? I sent it back. I'd love to think based on other reviews that this is a 4 Star restaurant but it adds up to a weak 3 for me.

My waitress was ANJELICA and she was very nice. She stopped by several times to ask how everything was and when I asked her for my check she did that promptly too. I had the blackened Mahi with Cole slaw and cream peas. Overall a nice lunch for $9.99.

We have dined at Gene's for years. Enjoyed the food with out of town guest, who were very pleased with their meal. But tonight we ordered the seafood platter for two, the meal had very little taste, even the hushpuppies were soggy. No consistency, good quantity, bad quality today.
