After reading excellent reviews from Yelp friends I had to check out Bow Leg'z. This place should really be named "4Rivers Killer." I mean that. Everyone loves 4Rivers because it's fast and good. Bow is faster and better, and it's not filled with a bunch of coconut customers. I ordered the two meat platter with wings, ribs, mac n' cheese and collard greens. The mac and greens are better than Potter's Soul Food. Yes it really is. The wings are on point. The rub and glaze are so delicious! The ribs are tender and moist, unlike 4Rivers' dry ribs. Bow Leg'z also has three fantastic house made sauces, which were all fantastic. I won't lie to you, this place CRUSHES 4Rivers and puts Bonos on McDonalds level. I chatted with the owners for a minute and they've only been in business for nine months. Please keep them alive! Support small business. Stop being pretentious, drive to University (no you will not get shot) and eat here! I can't wait for football season because I will cater a boat load of their wings for the house parties! A+ I wish you guys all the luck and I'll definitely be back and spread the word!

I travel frequently for business. I also love BBQ so I'm always looking for good Q. While I'm not a fan of order at the counter restaurants as a rule I'll make an exception for this one. I had the one pound rib dinner with mac n cheese and the absolute best greens I've ever eaten. We were greeted as soon as we walked in the door and offered samples of whatever we wanted to try. When the owner handed me a rib I knew without tasting they were perfect. A friend had the brisket and was equally impressed.

I feel horrible being the first person to post a negative review HOWEVER this is not 3, 4, or 5 star bbq. The 2 stars is based on the food being fresh and the quality service. The ribs, pulled pork, and brisket needed seasoning. All three had great color and appearance but no flavor. The ribs were dry and the brisket had too much fat. I'll keep going to 4 Rivers or Monroes. The texas toast didnt even have butter on it! Just a plain untoasted slice of white bread (I would only expect this at a bbq place on the side of the road). All the sauces were delicious but I do not rate bbq on sauce. The meat should taste good without the sauce. What I will return for is a quick side dish because the macaroni and cheese and green beans were delicious. They also have great service. They also have Cheerwine!

Found this place through a times union article. Very pleased with the food the mac and cheese is the best I've had at any restaurant and I love mac and cheese. The co2 was out for the drinks and they were nice enough to give us Gatorade free and was very apologetic for it being out. I am sure we will be back.

I found this place thanks to Yelp, and the high rating it had was MORE than justified! Walking in, the first thing one notices is the amazing aroma of bbq brisket, pork, turkey and chicken. The decor is nothing special, but WHO CARES when the food is so incredible. Lots of choices--I went with brisket with sides of Mac and cheese and baked beans. Everything was awesome. Of the three bbq sauces they offer, I liked the sweet and spicy best, and the jerk seasoning was tasty but lacked spice. Great customer focus, too. I didn't feel like I had to wait too long for my order, but the woman working the counter apologized several times and gave me pudding for being so patient. And the pudding was great! Go eat at Bow Legz as soon as possible. You'll be glad you did.

Sides included collards, green beans, Bow Beans, coleslaw, potato salad. We tried ALL of these items in our group. Before ordering, you can actual sample whatever meat or side you please. Staff was enthusiastic about the food, convicted that everything they made was top-notch....good to hear. [ Brisket: A/A- ] The Brisket was delicious, though slightly too dry for me, the fat content was higher and melty with outstanding dry rub, saving it from being chalky and dry overall. Everyone in our group loved it. [ Pulled Pork: A/A- ] Same deal, excellent flavoring, but a bit too dry for me. Others thought this was the best of show and talked about it for days. [ Smoked Turkey: A ] Moist and simple, delicious. [ Bow Beans: A ] Not too different from regular baked beans, but they have special spices added like nutmeg and cinnamon. Not soupy or watery. [ Potato Salad: A ] Again, cinnamon and nutmeg spices, sweeter than expected, creamy and delicious. [ Green Beans: A+ ] Definitely your "grandma" style southern green beans stewed with bacon and what seemed to be black pepper and garlic. I inhaled them. [ Collard Greens: A+ ] Outstanding. This is my favorite part of BBQ, and these collards were wicked. Not over seasoned, not overcooked, bright and semi-crunchy with pulled pork added to the pot. Overall, I would give this 5-star if I tried it one more time and got some seriously dope brisket, my favorite. For now, I'm giving it a very high 4-star and hope to see them continue to amass a local following. ProTip: Cheerwine soda on tap

The BBQ was okay, a little too salty and the meats lacked a little flavor. Unfortunately, they don't have cornbread and don't make their own sweet tea (which I am used to BBQ places having). However, the sides are really good, with the green beans being absolutely delicious. They also have Cheerwine on tap, which is great! The staff is really friendly, and if it's your first time visiting, they will give you free samples. The sample of the wings were really good, and their BBQ sauces are good as well.

This place is such a hidden gem! The food and service was much more than I expected. Immediately upon entering we were greeted with a smile. The lady behind the counter was very nice and patient while we made our selections. The hubby decided on the brisket platter and I got the ribs platter, we got emma the chicken wing lunch special. For sides we got French fries, bow beans, potato salad and Mac and cheese. Let me start of that these were some of the best ribs I have had in a very long time! They were juicy, moist and tender. I hardly got any meat stuck in between my teeth which is what usually happens with tough meats but their ribs were soo good. The order came with three ribs but these ribs were huge! And full of meat! Let's put it this way, I couldn't finish them and I can eat! The brisket was soo good too. Moist, delicious and very flavorful! And to those who complain about the fat, well then don't get the brisket because brisket is a fattier piece of meat and for us it's exactly what we expected and honestly it wasn't even that fatty. The wings were soo good too. They were moist and juicy and the meat was fall off the bone good. The flavor was good too. Now the sides, can we just talk about the Mac and cheese? Because seriously that stuff was soo good. It was a cheesy concoction of goodness. My child ate is right up! The seasoning was good and the strings of cheese I would get when pulling my fork away was proof of its deliciousness. My bow beans were pretty good. The flavor was spot on for my taste, but I can't explain the flavor, sweet but not so sweet that your teeth hurt. The potato salad was cold and creamy and had good flavor, they were nice enough to let me try it before hand which was very nice of them. The French fries were your typical fries nothing special about them but seriously just get their homemade stuff! Even though they were out of Pepsi from the fountain it wasn't a big deal and plus they were very apologetic. It's something that can happen to anyone and it was out of their control and they were waiting on the Pepsi guy. Overall I would definitely recommend this place to people. I look forward to bringing the rest of my family sometime soon. :-)

Based upon the sterling reviews of this BBQ venue, I picked up a mixed group of plates for me and Amanda B. to try out for lunch today. We found the Ultimate Brisket/Pork sandwich, the Pulled Pork, and the Rib Snack to be exceptional. While being ably supported by tasty and sweet baked beans and a gooey Mac-n-cheese, we were loving our take out. Applied with generous helpings of loving care and portions, Bow Leg'z really put a well dressed shine on their platters with neat food wrapping and a very clean venue from which to serve. I am pleased to find another BBQ place that does their job well, unlike some of the "usual suspects" (chain restaurants) in Jacksonville. I will be eager to return here in the future and I hope the local culinary specialists in Yelp will like this too.

I knew the name from somewhere but had never been in the restaurant so since we were in the area and Yelp said it was a winner we decided to stop for lunch. My husband had the brisket with 2 sides and I had the Smoked Chicken salad. The salad was only $6.99 where I had paid up to $10 at other places and this was just as good. My husbands brisket was wonderfully cooked to falling apart consistency. The only thing I would change was maybe add another BBQ sauce that was not mustard based or so sweet as the jerk even though the jerk sauce was my choice that day.

We tried just about everything on the menu at Bow Leg'z recently and really enjoyed the works. The smoked chicken wings are delicious, smokey, and perfectly seasoned. The beef brisket was tender and moist and worth going back for more. My favorite at any bbq place is the pulled pork and Bow Leg'z did not disappoint me at all, it was awesome. The best sides in our opinion were the baked beans with a sweet and gently spicy sauce, and the macaroni and cheese which would compete with my grandma's southern homemade recipe. Even the sweet tea was made perfectly southern strong and sweet unlike so many other restaurants in town. The potato salad was heavy on the eggs, which I like but may be a matter of preference. The coleslaw also gets high marks for a high quality side item. Finally the fresh sauces, sweet, jerk, and mustard, all taste homemade, interesting and delicious. Not that anyone needs dessert after such a good meal, but the banana pudding and the strawberry pudding also deserve an honorable mention.

Called to place an order to go. Denzil answered with a clear and upbeat greeting. (I do appreciate when people have good phone manners). Ordered the rib platter and the wing platter with high hopes that it would not only impress me, but impress the husband for our picnic lunch break. When I arrived, my order had just been finished and was ready to go complete with everything needed for a picnic. The cashier added the sauce (mustard bbq) and I was good to GO. I was hungry when I ordered it at 11am but having to endure the savory smell of bbq wafting throughout my VW had me ravenous. Thank God it took only 7 minutes for me to get to Memorial Park from Bow Leg'z. When we opened up the containers and saw wings stacked high looking perfectly caramelized next to home cooked mac n cheese it felt as if a ray of glorious sunshine beamed down from the heavens. We felt the same way when we spied the ribs, neatly stacked and meaty, the dark brown and cinnamon colored red of promising BBQ. The mac n cheese had a layer of cheese on the top and the collard greens looked fresh, the leaves still firm and not mushy. Verdict: had I an extra stomach, I would've eaten it all. The wings were my favorite. I don't believe I'll be able to eat anyone else's wings after these. These wings were chubby and juicy (and by chubby I mean it was the opposite of wings you sometimes get that seem shriveled up, taste dry and seem overcooked). The skin on these wings were perfectly seasoned and smoked that even eating them without sauce was a delight. The ribs were the same (meaty and tender). The seasoning was a blend of southern and Caribbean spices just as they advertise. It was smoky with an underlying tropic sweetness. Two thumbs up! Add the sauce and it's even better. My only critique is that the collards were a bit on the salty side. Not too salty that I didn't finish them but just salty enough that it had me wishing it were less so. Regardless, whenever I find myself craving BBQ, Bow Leg'z is going to be my first choice.

The local newspaper wrote that this restaurant is a "tasty fusion of Caribbean and Southern-style barbeque", so that is the reason I decided to visit Bow Leg's bbq. One of the owners of this place is from Barbados, that is why some of the menu items taste a little different from the regular southern style bbq. For example, the Bow beans have this orangy flavor that I consider good, but I prefer the standard/regular flavor. If you are not ready to try a new flavor for baked beans, do not try them. I had the chicken platter and bow cole slaw and bow beans. What I like was the big side portions and the tasty chicken. When I arrived to this restaurant, I was welcome with a chicken wing! That was a free sample! Everyone else was very nice and helpful. This is a big plus for us, the ones who enjoy great customer service. One note, they had three different sauces, all of them have an expiration date. I enjoyed this restaurant very much. I intend to be back soon.

Southern BBQ with a Caribbean flair served up naked, enrobed in a hint of dry rub spices from the islands accompanied by a selection of sauces that aren't normally found table side. The all-star line up including a ketchup base tangy jerk sauce infused with a Jamaican influence that reminds me of the roadside chicken grilling on a barrel outside Dunn's River Falls, they also offer a mustard based sauce with the same spirited ideology that gives the pork it's own unique identity it's not complicated but it is a complex combination when applied sparingly with the meat's smoky undertones. Lastly the ketchup based sweet sauce that tethers the most reluctant BBQ aficionado from experiencing the true definition of succulent BBQ by camouflaging the natural juices and aromas that can only be achieve using wood and slow low temperature cooking. If this is your first visit you're in for a real treat they offer up free samples while your making up your mind and I don't mean a pinch it's your choice a rib bone or whole smoked chicken wing or anything else you want to try you can then decide what you want. I'll make this easy for you everything is tender, moist and fall off the bone, I tried the Chicken wing sample but ordered the turkey and pork ribs along with a side of collard greens and Mac and Cheese everything was excellent as was the service actually the service is outstanding. The restaurant is very clean they weren't very busy early afternoon with customers but I noticed instead of standing around they were cleaning what a concept. Le meilleur du meilleur is definitely finishing with the banana pudding.

Some of the best barbeque I have ever had. I have ordered the pulled pork and spare ribs, both are amazing. The sides are also good. The collard greens and bow beans are my favorites.

I have only tried the ribs so far. Thick cut, nice bark, great flavor. So good I almost ate the bones. Everything else I saw looked good too. I will definitely be back. Quick, friendly service.

As soon as you enter the door, you are warmly greeted by the staff with "Welcome to Bow Leg'z" and smiles. The young lady took our order and before we could have a seat our meals were ready. Friendly and quick was a great way to start this thing. Well, we then sat down to our meals. Everything smelled wonderful and I was quite eager to dig in. My friend ordered the pulled smoked chicken sandwich, baked beans and coleslaw and it looked very tasty. I was the pig of this session and ordered the wing platter with collard greens and mac n cheese. This meal was HUGE! It was a meal I could have easily split and still been left with ample. The wings were amazing. They were perfectly smoked with a sweet-like sauce and did not require any additional anything. My mac n cheese and collard greens could easily have been mistaken for Mom's or Grandmom's. Yep, they were that darn good. I can not forget to mention that the prices were very good too. If you are ever in the area and would like some tasty, homestyle cooking this is the place to go. Even if you aren't in the area, THIS is the place for some good eats. I will definitely be back. I gotta check out their banana pudding.

Greeted as soon as I walked in..mentioned it was my first time and was given a free rib to sample as I was reviewing the menu. Southern hospitality at its finest. The food was amazing! The rib was fall off the bone tender, brisket was moist and the pulled pork was very tender. Home made sauces, jerk, sweet and spicy and tangy mustard which was my favorite and a popular since I was fortunate to have the last bit made for that day! Overall a good place with even better food and service.

Wow! Pete and his staff are amazing. Friendly, Fast, and Delicious. Who could ask for more? I live over 300 miles away and was passing through Jacksonville, when I stumbled across this restaurant on yelp. The reviews enticed me to try this place. I am so glad that I did. I had the turkey plate with a side of ribs. The flavors were like nothing I ever had before. Everything was made with a Caribbean flare, which was a pleasant surprise. The baked beans and coleslaw are award winning. I forgot to mention, when I arrived, Pete let me sample a wing, it was love at first bite. Be sure to try the homemade BBQ sauces. I can't wait to return.

They get 5 stars because of the portion I ate for two days off that food. 15$ got me 3 huge bones of ribs, omg some juicy brisket Macaroni and cheese and baked beens with bread and strawberry banana pudding.. man.. I smashed it and was full. I felt defeated but I was the winner because I basically had a full meal to eat the next day. i lived in Jax for 3 years and I wish I knew about this place sooner.. GO HERE NOW.. #BBQ

5 stars for service and food quality and value. Had the brisket. Tasted better than 4 Rivers. My brother got the ribs. Very very tasty. The people who served us were extremely friendly and even gave us samples to taste. Portions are very generous. Really happy that we stopped in. Oh one more thing. The BBQ sauces were great! They were sweet and delicious. Thankyou

Love this gem! I heard about this place from 2 of my patients and they wouldn't stop bragging so of course I had to try it out. We were greeted with a welcome the moment we walked into the door. The menu is short, sweet, simple. Everything looked so yummy! It was hard to decide BUT this place lets you SAMPLE! I'm not talking about like a forkful, they gave us a whole wing and a rib. It made deciding easy. I got the pulled pork sandwich with cole slaw and mac and cheese. My boyfriend got the two meat ribs and brisket with beans and collard greens. GOODNESS! I'm a huge mac and cheese lover and theirs was up there. Cheesy! I also love the collard greens when I tried them off my boyfriends plate. One of the ladies accidentally added baked beans as a side by mistake but kindly just let me keep it and said to feed it to my son (but of course I ate it lol). The service was amazing! Though my son couldn't sit still and ran out and jumped on the chairs, the women there were understanding and just laughed about it. One of them gave me a sample of banana pudding to feed him. I ended up eating myself and ordering a side of it. It's a big deal because I'm not a huge fan of banana anything besides the fruit alone but this banana pudding I can definitely eat again! Overall, I would recommend this place. So glad it's down the street from my job as well... Can't wait to come back! P.S. I could eat the food without the additional sauces but the sauces can't be skipped out on if you're here! lol.

Bow Leg'z BBQ is a surprisingly unique and refreshing brand of BBQ. It's hailed as Florida-style BBQ and if you're anything like me, you're wondering "What the heck is that?! I've heard of Kansas City, Texas, Carolina, St. Louis, et al...." This is almost like a fusion between Jamaican/Carribean Jerk and Southern BBQ. The sweet and spicy sauce is my favorite and the heat builds as you consume it. They also have the best mac and cheese and green beans of any BBQ place I've frequented. DEFINITELY give it a try!!

  • Rebecca N.

I walked and was greeted with a warm "Welcome"! I told the man behind the counter that it was my husband and my first time there. He gave me a free wing to try and my husband a rib to try. The wing was delish! It did not need any BBQ sauce on it at all. I ordered pulled pork dinner that comes with two sides. I chose macaroni(oh my God-it was so good & cheese and greens(which are considered "premium sides"). The sides rocked! The pulled pork was good, but not hot enough for my satisfaction. I think a slice of Texas toast to go with the meals would be good. Now, on to the BBQ homemade sauces-hence the the Four star. I did not like any of the sauces. But, the one I ended up using more of was "Jerk" flavor. I had to wash my hands and the restroom was very clean. I liked the picnic style tables that can be pulled together for groups. I think they could add a roll of paper towels on each table. You need that while eating BBQ. I usually drink water, but decided to get a cold drink tonight. I got the "CherryWine"! It was great. I never had that before. I like the sweetness of the BBQ. I also treated myself to a desert:banana pudding. It was fresh, bananas were firm and a nice color, but the pudding part lacked flavor. I saved half of my dinner for my lunch tomorrow, as I was too full to finish. The greens needed a little less salt. I can add my own. I talked with the Owner, he is a very good Man. He was in corporate rat race at one time and his real dream was BBQ. I am glad he followed his dream. Job well done sir! I will be back soon.

I've had BBQ all over the country and I'm honestly not usually impressed with Florida. Bow Legz has a bit of a Caribbean flavor, but serious BBQ roots. The smoked wings were the best I've ever had, hands down. Perfectly done, well seasoned and the skin was the exact match of crispy and chewy. The sauces were homemade with excellent balance and a bit of jerk inspiration. The coleslaw had the same rich seasoning and wasn't overly sweet like most creamy sauces. The collard greens were traditional and perfect. I tried my fiancées brisket and it was excellent too for what Florida typically has to offer...probably the closest match to Texas brisket I've had here. 150 mile BBQ-I'd drive two hours to eat here.

I am new to the area and only knew about Bow Legz because of their Groupon special and I am so, so glad I went there. Their food is phenomenal! I had the ultimate sandwich. I tried all their sauces with it and each one was incredible! Their sides were amazing too. I will definitely be a returning customer! You all need to go there and give it a try. You won't be disappointed!

I came in for a quick work trip and a friend ordered food from this restaurant. We had ribs, smoked wings, mac n cheese, potato salad and collard greens. I am a bbq lover. This place is by far the best Southern food I have eaten. I live in Fort Lauderdale and I have my favorite down there but I think Bowlegz tops my favorite! The ribs were meaty and succulent. I didn't even have to put any bbq sauce albeit the sauce was good too. Then I took a forkful of the Mac n cheese and had 3 additional servings. The Mac n cheese was full bodied and delicious. I am not a huge fan of potatoes salad but since everything else was good, I took a small bite. That too was pretty damn good even though I am not a fan of potato salad all that much. I ended up taking a servings to satisfy my taste buds. The collard greens made me sit back and really think about purchasing another plane ticket to come back for it. The flavor was really good. The only thing I would change about the greens is that I wish they would chop it smaller. By this point I was pretty full but I had to try the smoked wings. They were great and were like chicken wings on steroids. They were big and juicy. I can't wait to go back to eat there. The last time I was in Jacksonville I had eaten at another place in downtown somewhere but that place cannot come any where near Bowlegz. I can't wait to eat this food again!

OMG. After a rough road trip up from Miami, with dogs/car trouble/I95 delays, stopped here for takeout b4 checking into hotel (just based on search for close by BBQ). Fast and very friendly service, and super-large portions for price. Ribs, wings, brisket, collards and mac&cheese all AMAZING. I might not eat the rest of the weekend.

I saw a restaurant review in our local paper and the writer gave a sound endorsement of Bow Leg'z and I just had to try it as I love good bbq. Bow Leg'z is billed as Caribbean spices and Southern bbq and the combination is great. I went with two friends for lunch and since it was our first time there we were given a chicken wing in order to sample the Bow Leg'z taste. We all liked it a lot and ordered rib sandwiches; when the orders came out, the ribs were fall off of the bone tender. They offer pulled pork, chicken wings and brisket as well, which means more trips to sample more of their fare. There are sauces for the table, none of which is hot. Their sweet and spicy sauce is a combination of many flavors with a sweetness to it, and was our go to sauce. I highly recommend this restaurant, especially if you are into trying and enjoying good variations bbq.

Having tried about 8 places here in JAX, this is the one you want to try. Ribs were perfect. Amazing rub, great homemade sauces, all dated when made, amazing sides, all the best on their own..mac and cheese homemade, beans, slaw, collard greens. Had to take my little girls to the bathroom. Totally clean w/ a sheet w/ times and initials showing when they clean it like 6 x's a day! The Carribean influence is suttle, but maybe the winning factor. I'm a big guy, BBQ condisuer sp?, but I'm gonna say it....THE BEST BBQ I HAVE EVER HAD. + GREAT SERVICE W/ A SMILE. TRY IT, YOU'LL LOVE IT.

I am from the South, am picky about BBQ, AND pregnant. My gut told me to try Bow Leg'z out today. Honestly, everyone was so friendly and welcoming and had such amazing customer service, I thought, ohhhh this is gonna be bad. They insisted on a sample of pulled pork and my heart leapt with happiness. Beautifully tender, flavorful pork that went well with any of their in house sauces. The Mac and cheese is truly home style and not that powdery boxed crap that some others have. The greens tasted like my grandma's which should be taken as the hugest compliment ever. It is definitely worth noting that they have CHEERWINE ON TAP!!!!!!!! I was so pleasantly surprised at my experience from start to finish I couldn't wait to finish eating to write this. What a great find in this part of town where options are slim pickins for great, southern style food. Soooo good I will be back! The baby is happy!

Do you like to walk in a place and immediately feel genuinely welcomed? Bow Leg'z surprised me with their great service and good Caribbean/Barbecue fused food. The service: We immediately walked in and were greeted by welcoming staff that helped us through the menu and offered samples. They also checked back multiple times while we were there to make sure we had what we needed. The food: I had the pulled pork sandwich and "Bo Beans" and Macaroni and Cheese. They were all really delicious. I especially enjoyed the Jerk sauce which is something that I think is unique to this place. It's nice to find a local place where nice people are serving good food. Give it a try.

I always order delivery from this place. I always order the wings with jerk bbq sauce platter. They have healthy size portions. I love the sauce. I have tried the collard greens, bow beans, and the macaroni & cheese. I can't say anything bad about them. I was surprised about the beans. They cook the beans the way I love baked beans cooked. The only negative I can say about this place is that they run out of food a lot. So I tend to order early in the day.

Had excellent, moist tender pulled pork plate ($10) for a good size portion, certainly more than you would get at S, W, or B's. The sides were excellent -- mac & chz the way you know you want it, very good potato salad, and the green beans!! Might be the best side of beans in NE FLA. I would seriously go back here just for the seasoned green beans. Very happy - two superb adult dinners w/ sides for $21. Wish I had found this place months ago!

#BBQ

Consistency is key and Bow Legz has always been consistent in all aspects of service, from customer service to flavorful food which is why I am a repeat customer.
