This review is for a trip we took to my wife's home town last year. I remembered to write this (belatedly) after scooting around for ingredients to make my version of IFG's Onion Crusted Grouper, which I am having a serious crave for. We read the reviews of this place and decided to give it a go. The genius who came up with the concept for cooking grouper this way needs to have a place in the seafood cooking hall of fame. Crispy and balanced spicing on the outside with tender, moist, and subtle flavoring in the firm grouper fillet. The sides are average. Indescribable, but I'll try to approximate it to, if nothing else, purge my system of turkey and dressing later this week.

I waited a long time to dine at Islands and I'm sorry that I did. I tried the jerked grouper and my wife had the blackened grouper. Both were awesome, but try the jerked if you prefer spicier foods. The potatoes were also very tasty. My only criticism is the vegetables lacked flavor, which seems to be a common problem. The prices are far less than other fine dining establishments and I found the quality of the food to be higher than those other restaurants.

Just had to change my review. Old ownership was bad but the new ownership is great. Had one of the best meals I've ever had on my recent trip back to the sunshine state. My fish dinner was so fresh it slapped me in the face. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to come back.

This was the best meal in Florida so far! Grouper, Cobia, and a mussels appetizer that could've been our meal! The service was also perfect which is rare these days. These people know what they're doing!

Awesome food. The management is great, the food was fresh, customer service impeccable. There is a lot of pride-in-ownership going on here.

We had crab cakes first which were very good. I had cobia with dill sauce with fried spinach and garlic mashed potatoes. Friends had salmon, snapper and grouper. Everyone enjoyed their meal and we will return. When leaving they had lots of people waiting on a table and I now know why. We have found a new place to go. This was my first time for fried spinach but I will try that at home it was fabulous and melted in your mouth.

This place is perfect. We started our dinner a little frustrated due to other events. Our waitress "Kristie" turned our evening right around with an excellent wine choice and superior service. The scallops and salmon were perfectly cooked by expert chefs. Finally, we decided to give the manager our compliments and spoke with the very friendly and welcoming owner "Jack". Eat here, trust me please.

I'm not a local, but the Islands Fish Grill owners & staff make me feel like one...every time I'm in town! My business brings me to Melbourne about twice a month for a week at a time, and I make a point of dropping in for a meal or two because it's that good! This fabulous find was recommended by my hotel (which has a shuttle to/from, so no problem having a couple glasses of wine!) the first time I came to Melbourne, and I thank them frequently for bringing it to my attention. The staff is ALWAYS welcoming and up to speed on the nightly specials--which change depending upon what comes off the boat that day. I've had just about every seafood offering on (and off) the menu--all fabulous--and as others have noted am partial to the fried spinach. Can't get this anywhere else! Islands Fish Grill defines unpretentious fine dining without the associated beachside pricetag. Simply Amazing!

There is no doubt of my rating for this amazing, little place. We had one of the best meals I've had in a long time. Beer & wine only but a nice selection of both. We started with conch fritters ( fabulous) & the most amazing mussels in a marinera sauce. Bread & roasted garlic olive oil ( we had 2 baskets) were simple but oh so good. We all has Cobia - oh sweet, awesome Cobia glazed in a bar-b-que sauce topped with a sautéed mushroom & onion salsa. Fabulous coconut rice & perfectly pickled fresh vegetables. The most amazing food I have had in a very long time. Dessert was a simple Creme brûlée & key lime pie both superb! My fear is the next time we go here it will be too busy because this places rocks. Fresh food, great wait staff & a wonderful evening!

Place is one of the best kept secrets in the Melbourne Beach area. Fresh fish and excellent preparation methods make this joint a must try if you are visiting. Cozy atmosphere, cool staff, great specials and some of the FRESHEST fish you will ever have.

Absolutely fantastic. I had the Cobia special and my date had the Mahi. I could not recommend this place more highly. Our waiter, Yanni, provided great service and his recommendations were spot on. Like many reviews here I will sing the praises of the fried spinach. My date got her dinner with sautéed veggies and loved them. We both has the garlic mashed potatoes and found them perfectly balanced to the rest of the meal. I was impressed by the reviews I had read before visiting and I am happy to be adding another positive write-up.

My wife and I are on our honeymoon, we found this place on yelp. I was extremely pleased with the service and food. You have to stop in and get the grouper. Their pumpkin fish was to die for (says the wife). When we are in the area again well will go out of our way to eat here! A++ all across the board. They made the 1st night on our honeymoon very special, I cannot say thank you enough.

Also visiting from DC and went looking for local place to bring a coworker. When coming to Florida I try to find grouper and this was listed has a house special and had great yelp reviews. Talked with the ownership while there and found the fish is supplied from local sources and the grouper was indeed very good. The sides were well done with a nice chilled vegetable combo to go with the hot fish and rice. The rice was pleasantly sweet instead of the usual bland side that I've come to expect when getting seafood entrees. Good wine selections and ok bottled beer list, no drafts or mixed drinks.

Here on business they accommodated our group of nine easily and without hesitation. Conch and shrimp fritters were very tasty, signature onion crusted grouper was exquisite. All fresh fish always so they may not have everything every day but they will sub up to please. All enjoyed their meals. Yanni was a great server, very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Decor a little dated but it did not detract from the meal in any way. Bottled beer and wine bar only.

I was visiting from DC on business and stumbled upon this fantastic restaurant. I'm so happy I did because what an absolute gem! The seafood is so fresh and grilled to perfection, it truly melts in your mouth. It instantaneously became my go-to restaurant for the rest of my week in Melbourne and the highlight of my trip! Can't wait to go back!

Not a huge menu but everything is local, freshly prepared and delicious. Must have their flash fried spinach!!! Lot's of great surprises and Jason our server was great!

The house specialty is the grouper and that definitely was the best choice of the evening. They had a nice two for one beer special which was a pleasant surprise. The staff was friendly and efficient. The prices were in average and the food was worth coming back for.

Great service! Miss the black bean salsa. Miss the mashed sweet potato. Smaller portions.... Different feel to the environment... Miss you Islands. I've been a patron for 15 years.

This was an excellent meal with awesome service. As a single diner I was given just as much attention as others. The yellow fin tuna was amazing. The house salad was tasty. Very reasonable pricing for the quality of the food. Writing this at my table before I leave and I'm already looking forward to another visit.

Wow! If you appreciate well prepared local fresh seafood with a knowledgeable and friendly staff, this is your place. We started with the spicy Thai shrimp appetizer followed by a couple a salads and split the jerk grouper. Everything was excellent and fresh. If we were local, we would be regulars. Wonderful atmosphere and we did not feel rushed by staff. A very nice evening.

Some of the best meals we've ever eaten. Onion crusted grouper and cobia over risotto. Just the risotto would be a fantastic meal. The steamed clams were excellent as well. Served with a very good Riesling (nice and fruity). Definitely recommend.

Had a delicious dinner with my Sweet Grandma tonight. The blacken Mahi-mahi is aahh-amazing , My Grandma had the Salmon with special dill sauce. We both ate all of our fish which was plated beautifully , The flavors melded wonderfully for this dish . The server was great , he was on the ball and observant . This is was a true treat for the two of us. We will be back . :)

Went because yelper's average was good enough and because we wanted seafood. It was just 'ok'. Our server was extremely nice, but it didnt' take away from the fact that the place is relatively expensive for the atmosphere you get (more like a small ale house atmosphere). The chips/white bread that was served with some cold bean 'dip' was ehhh, the 'probably Melbourne's best Caesar salad' didn't have croûtons and was just 'ehhh', the creamy seafood chowder was ehhhh, the black bean soup my wife had was quite good, and the onion crusted grouper that they are known for was good, but came in a super sweet, orange duck sauce that i actually used some of the bland vegetables to scoop away the sauce and build a damn so my fish wouldn't drown in it. The fish itself was pretty good but nothing to write home about (which is ironic since i'm writing about it!) Recommendations to owner: Limit the sauce, go light. It just needs a hint of it and probably not so thick. Refresh the decor. Change the bread.

The service here is always great even when they are busy. The onion encrusted grouper is so delicious I order it all the time. The scallop appetizer was really spectacular, we shared it but could have had it as a main course, 4 large scallops with mango bean sauce. They have swordfish on the menu and said is was "No longer a sustainable seafood concern", not the case. Prime rib was very fatty. Prices were really great, good value , just don't get the prime rib. Small, nice atmosphere, could not finish it all, went home with my grouper. Agree with other reviews who gave it 3 or 4 stars.

Recommended by our shuttle driver. Best Grouper I have ever had. The onion crusted grouper was just amazing. My wife ordered the crab cakes which she said were some of the best she ever had. We spent almost a week vacationing in the area and this was far and away the best restaurant we dined at.

Food was very good! However service was awful! Waited 10 minutes before server even came to table. Server for table next to us walked by several times and didn't say anything . Only beginning , waited and ask for things multiple times . I went to talk to owner when we never saw in this very small place on a sat . Night. He told me he was in office working on billing ! We saw another couple leave waiting their server. Oh by the way this place was ok ambiance across A1a . Not on water and very expensive! Owner have me a free entree and won't go back ! He didn't care about his customers especially locals. I won't waste my time or money! I would go to Dijon's which is way nicer atmosphere and worth my $ 120 tab for two . Good luck jack ! You will need it!

This was one terrific restaurant. Great seafood, great waitress (Jennifer), and reasonable prices. I had mahi, my wife had grouper, both were terrific.

  • Chuck A.

Food is what you would expect from a seafood restaurant on the beach. But the service and attitude of staff is less than to be desired. Waited 30 mins just to get drinks, and waited over 45 mins just to get an attitude when asked what is taking so long Limit menu, no fried shrimp. If have children I wouldn't recommend at all.

Long story short; we ended up walking out after 30 minutes of being ignored. Our order was never taken, in fact the waiter walked away from the table mid-order to attend to another table. I would not recommend this restaurant to anybody. It should also be noted two items were not available on an already very small menu.

After much discussion and suggestions from family, my wife and I settled on dinner here. We had the crab cake appetizers which were wonderful. For the meal my wife ordered the Cobia blackened and I had the onion crusted grouper. Both were absolutely fantastic. For dessert we shared the key lime pie.....it was fantastic! Our server, Jason, was very friendly and informative. The seafood was fresh and amazing. A bit pricey, but worth it in my opinion.

We passed by this place a million times but never went in because we did not think we would ever find parking--well, surprise to us...there is a lot in the back! Six of us dined, and six of us were satisfied and stuffed with our delicious meals. I had the soup of the day which was a spicy fish chowder--it rocked, and the spicy shrimp appetizer for my entree. It was perfectly seasoned and came on a bed of rice, it was big enough for an entree! The rest of my peeps either had the grouper which they are known for or the fillet. All were nice-sized portions that came with mashed potatoes and a veggie side. We had a friendly waitress, whose only flaw was not putting our order in promptly, which she admitted to us as we finished our appetizers! Despite that snaffu, we will be back!

The prices here are through the roof for less than average food. Chips and cold bean dip are served instead of bread or anything and it was below average. I had a Ceasar salad that was named "the best in Melbourne" and it was below average with too much dressing... Shared a fish dish with the girlfriend that had sun-dried tomato artichokes and a medley of vegetables, it was the special of the night at $28.00 and it was less than average. For the child we ordered the child's chicken fingers which came with 3 strips and veggies and they were below average and they charged $10.00 for them. We mentioned to the waiter that we thought that was way over priced and they lowered her price to $6.00, but even at that, we were at another restaurant in the area and ordered a child's shrimp plate for $5.00 and there were enough shrimp to feed an adult. Overpriced for below average food. Seems like Melbourne's choices are limited, but I'd suggest you try some place else. Disappointing.

Had the Mussels Putanesca, and the Mahi Mahi special ... It was very good!!! Loved the food, as well as the service and ambience. Definitely worth coming back to.

This place may be the best good seafood restaurant in the area. That may not be saying a lot, but it may also be true. It's got a nice intimate setting and kind of feels like those older classy seafood places. I wouldn't haul a pack of kids in there, but it's a good place for a couple or two to sit comfortably over a good meal.

Excellent place. We had a great time and the food was outstanding. For starters we had the mussels. They were done in a tomato based broth that was so good, we wanted to lick the plate. Had a little bit of a kick to it that rounded the dish off nicely. The portion was massive - over a dozen large mussels for $8.95. Then came our dinner - onion encrusted grouper and grilled grouper. Very nice cuts - living in Florida, we know what grouper is - it should be thick and this stuff was. Large portions we could barely finish. Don't know what dessert is like - we were too full. Definitely would go back to this place again.

Sorry to disagree with the reviews but we've tried this place twice, with guests and have sampled 8 different meals plus probably the same number of appetizers. If anything is memorable it's the fact that everything we ordered is way overcooked. We spoke to one of their waitresses and she sort of acknowledged they hear the above a lot. If it's full, it's noisy, an issue of acoustics, not the people. The blond at the bar can be about as friendly as a pit bull. Perhaps it's a place for regulars who enjoy rubberized fish. Too bad as the cooking destroys good to excellent ingredients.

Haven't been here for a while (the last time didn't stick in my memory) so decided to go again since maybe things have improved. Well they didn't! The atmosphere and uniforms are very outdated. I mean I know it's Melbourne, but other restaurants here manage to get it right. We sat in an awkward side room, no music and hearing other people's conversations. Ok fine, I can get over the poor atmosphere and awkward room if the food is worth it. Nope! Food is very overpriced for what you get. I got the sea bass and for $32 you get a mediocre piece of fish, small scoop of crappy mashed potatoes, and mixed veg. The thing that really put me off was the mango salsa I got with the fish. it was a JOKE! it looked like mush out of a can... and tasted like it too. My boyfriend got the onion crusted grouper and it was "eh". It was probably soaked with some high fructose corn syrup sauce. The thing that made us both really upset was the bill. We both got a drink and was a grand total of $75. In my eyes this meal was worth $18-20 a plate (being generous). There are way better restaurants where you will pay this much and get better quality and quantity (like continental flambé). I usually don't write angry reviews but this was such a ridiculous waste of money. Definitely will not ever go back!

Servers were pleasant, thou noticed at the next table "eh, who gets this? and who gets that?" for a group of five, Definitely need training on service. My filet was "ok" - but came with two pieces of meat stuck together - definitely NOT a filet, My date ordered tuna sesame crusted. No flavor whatsoever. Asked for soy sauce in trying to revive it - but then, with just a touch - all tasted was the soy. Presentation on his white plate was " flop - flop - flop" of the tuna, veg & potato. Was someone in a rush, or are dishes usually plated in haphazard way? Not at all appealing. More like a diner. Check was somewhat high, experience definitely not a repeat stop or referral. Hadn't been in a couple of years, perhaps different kitchen staff or owner?

Not much in Melbourne. This place has tons of fresh fish. I had a special Sea Bass in white wine tomatoe sauce. GOOD not great. My company had the grouper special and said it was the best fish he ever had. Large portion of fish, small side of veggies and whatever that smashed stuff was on my plate. Sweet potatoes?? Place is pricey. $32 for the sea bass special that was really that special. LOL Overall GOOD experience. Id go again.

Good food but poor customer service from the tall bald waiter. We were a party of 3 and asked to have separate checks. The waiter agreed but with an attitude and automatically added 20% tip on each bill. I will never eat here again.

  • Thomas M.

Overall the fish (blackened Mahi-Mahi) was great. Decent sized portion as well. The location was a bit difficult to find. It's on the main drag and parking is in the back or at the beach lot. They only offered the two side items they had with the fish (no substitutions), so that was a bit odd. I don't care for mixed vegs or mashed sweet potatoes and was hoping for some rice. Regardless, the fish was terrific and they have several fresh choices each day.

I have dined at the Islands Fish Grill several times. As one who likes fresh seafood, I have never been disappointed. They have a "Cheers" type of atmosphere, (everyone knows your name). The owner is pleasant and the staff well trained.

Onion crusted grouper is the best fish you'll ever eat.

  • Ian S.

I eat a LOT of fish. This is the best place to get it in Melbourne, hands down. One of the best places in Central Florida actually. Most of their dishes are excellent (I do not recommend the salmon however). Their Cobia is the best I have ever had anywhere. Their mango salsa is great. Their chips and salsa pre-meal could be replaced by some good bread, but beyond that, this place is the fish place to go. And I find their prices to be pretty good (the Cobia is only $18 as I recall). BEST DISH: Cobia (get it with mango salsa or blackened)
