Awesome Crab Cakes. The prime rib was nice and rare and the service was great too. all around great experience. My wife and I went there for our anniversary dinner and were very pleased. Thank you.

I have been going here for years. It is a solid 4 stars and sometimes five. I always take out of town company here and none have ever been disappointed. I don't talk the place up. No expectations, no disappointments. I just take them and watch their faces when they start tasting their food. The entire road home is I would have never expected that! They always enjoy it.

I love this place. The restaurant is inside an old house. Crab cakes are huge hunks of crab but you can tell its canned crab. Bruschetta is delicious. All the fish dishes I've had were great. The crab and corn chowder is delicious. I love the little patio. The service is friendly and helpful. My wife loves the prime rib and mashed potatoes. The kids salmon was a hit with our daughter. The server was accommodating when she didn't want apple sauce and gold fish, he let her sub mashed potatoes. I know lots of people love their crab cakes but I will be sticking with the fish dishes in the future. We will be back again!

DIRTY ICE! BEWARE! So, a group if friends and I made plans today to have dinner at Backfin during the Gecko fest. All of our party was not present when our table was ready so we ended up having to give up the first available seat and wait for the next 6 seat table to open. We ended up waiting an hour to sit. We waited because the reviews on here said the food was really good so it seemed worth it. I ordered water to drink, a crab dip appetizer and the veggie burger. When the waitress brought my water I took a big drink and felt some bits of something solid. I spit out the bits and it was small black plastic looking pieces floating all in my drink. I figured it was just a dirty glass and asked for another water. The second glass comes, same bits of black floating. By now, everyone in my group is examining their drinks. Another friend pulls out what looks to be part of a bug. The waitress apologies sincerely and says that its been such a busy day all the ice was mostly gone so it was the ice at the bottom if the ice maker and bits of dirt had gotten in there. She says she must take back everyone s drink at the table because everyone got the dirty ice. She brings out our drinks again without ice in a frozen beer mug. We all sip our luke warm drinks waiting an hour for our food thinking they'd make it up to us some how on our bill. My appetizer never comes, we have to ask our waitress about it which she again apologizes and brings it out free of charge. We figure we'll share it and it makes up for the nasty water. What happens next is UNBELIEVABLE! So, we see all these other customers with ice in their glasses. We figure they got the ice situation fixed and ask to now have some clean ice. The waitress tells me she's serving the dirty ice to the other customers! !! We are in shock and ask to speak to the manager. She walks by our table 5 times before my friend asks if she's the manager, could we talk to her. I explained about the water. She literally screamed at the whole table! She said the ice maker sits outside next to the bathroom and under an oak tree so dirt constantly gets into the ice machine. She repeatedly stated "I'm doing the best we can, what do you want?". I tried to calm her down, none of us were angry and her tone was coming across harsh, and sympathized with it probably being a long busy day. Our only problem was that she was allowing all these other customers to drink the dirty ice. She admitted she did not care and accused us of having an attitude earlier when we were waiting for our table. I explained we were in no way upset at the restaurant, but annoyed at our always late friends. I told her we would not be paying for any of our non iced drinks (ice teas and water) and would never come back. She said that was fine and left. The owner came out shortly and sincerely apologized. He took off all drinks off our bill even the beer one friend ordered and discounted 10% off our bill. It was fair, we were not looking for a free meal. The manager a young tall blonde repeatedly gave us bad looks until we left. I have never met someone in the restaurant business who is more unprofessional. The fact is, dirty bits in your ice can make you sick! Lastly as to the food, my veggie burger was good and tasty. However, my friends ordered dinner entree $22/plate and their signature side 'garlic mash potatoes' were instant flavored variety you can get at the grocery store for $1. The tilapia was extremely dry and they could not finish the dish. In conclusion, on slower nights the food is probably much better but don't order drinks with ice because its dirty and a hazard.

This was a really hard decision, the food is a solid 4 star but the service was closer to a 2 star knocking it down to 3 stars overall. I really REALLY really enjoyed the crab cakes (on special, not on the menu), lots and lots of meat, too much meat for my fiancee, but just right for me. Lobster Ravioli was also top notch along with the Fish Spread (both appetizers). The restaurant feels very home grown and it fits perfect into the downtown Gulfport, FL scene. I have spent a decent amount of time there over the past few years and was surprised that I never tried Backfin Blue Cafe. I was very impressed with the food and I will likely be back. Complaint is from the service. It was slow with not a lot of smiles. The hostess was not cold, but not overly warm and friendly either. Our waitress was not quick to refill drinks or check on us. The place was rather busy on a Friday night when we arrive, but by the time we left it was empty. The "neglected feeling" lingered as the restaurant quieted down, and therefore I don't blame the poor service on being busy, I just blame it on being plane old poor service. I was have a blast talking and was distracted by the food, but towards the end of the meal my fiancee pointed out how poor the service was and as soon as she pointed it out, it became very clear. So long as you have some time and don't set high expectations of service and don't mind waiting around to get your glass of beer or cup of water refilled and want some good sea food, this place is just fine, but pay attention to the service.

Tho it was busy at 7 pm, the service was good, efficient and friendly. We shared the macadamian nut encrusted mahi mahi, very tasty with garlic potatoes and fresh salad. A bit loud inside, but the place was packed full of families.

This is one of my favorite places to eat. I have eaten here about 4 times over the two years I have been in St Petersburg. The food is quite good. You can't go wrong with the seafood or the prime rib. The mosquitoes can be a bit aggravating at times, but the staff provided bug repellent to my friend who was visiting from Chicago. You go here for the food, not the ambiance. Love it!

Used to adore this place for a few years after it opened, but then it stopped being great. They do their crab cakes very well. There's no doubt about it. If that's all you come for, you won't be disappointed. They also do good desserts. The atmosphere is unique. It's similar to Peg's with the restaurant operating out of a house. However, I've been with family whose steaks were under/over cooked. I've had fish that wasn't cooked quite right and lacked a lot of flavor. I also think prices here are a bit high considering the quality. If you want crab cakes and solid dessert, though, you can't go wrong here.

Why 4 stars? Because it was more solid than a block of a porcelain. --- --- --- You know, with nearly 500 reviews, sometimes the first line is hard to come up with. I still love it though. I'm living temporarily in Gulfport with a friend while I wait on my house to close, and this was meal #1 after finally being settled in with my move. I scanned through my bookmarks and remembered Eugene L's review about a prime rib sandwich. I did not need to read anymore information. The PRS was definitely tasty... but I question the label of calling it prime rib. J Alexander's makes a prime rib sandwich, which is essentially a giant slab of prime rib, betwixt two pieces of bread. At Backfin, it's basically a standard steak sandwich. Here's the thing though - it was tasty, the waitress was friendly/prompt, and the place had a nice, homey vibe. I was definitely the only patron under 50 years old, but I guess that's what you get with my new (temporary) neighborhood. I probably won't be back within the next 3 weeks because I'd prefer to try other new spots, but I'd recommend it to others in the area.

Great meal starting with Crab Cake. I had the barbecued salmon and she has the portobello imperial. Both were excellent. More good stuff bringing us to Gulfport. We too often forget about Gulfport as a dining option.

I really wanted to like this place. Sadly, for me, they're taking the casual, sleepy beach town approach far too literal. No real uniformity in their apparel (most looked like they pulled some random T from the dresser and booked it to work), oddly young staff and a "here's your food" kind of position when it comes to the actual service. When we got there we were given the worst seat. As soon as you open the door to come in and you could sit with us. But OK, it's small, we'll adapt. The patrons were quite loud and we had to ask the server to repeat what she said three times because of the noise. I finally flipped my menu closed and said "I can't hear anything." And then she just said "excuse me" and left for a few minutes. The food was pretty pricey for a little seafood shack and you certainly didn't pay for ambiance or service-with-a-smile. Then, to add insult to injury, they charge $2 for bread on top the high food costs. The $2 won't hurt but it's the point. I mean come on. So, bill time came and they never gave an itemized list of food. We've all had the wrong check come or the server accidentally added a drink or whatever so I always double check. Sure enough, the handwritten bill was different from the charge printout. The server was put off by us, you know, being city slickers and all... Maybe we just had a bad cloud over us that night as that is sometimes the case. Sadly, I don't recall the deliciousness of the food because every step of our experience was hindered by hiccups. This is just one review so take it how you may. But we didn't enjoy this place and I'm not going back for a redux.

Dined there on Saturday night with another couple highly recommending the food. Short wait. Service was ok but without personality. We ordered two specials...one was the crab cake with stuffed shrimp. The other was mahi mahi. The crab cake itself was very good. The sauce on the side was awful; way too powerful to compliment the sweet but delicate crab meat. The shrimp were covered in similar sauce that again overpowered the shrimp/crab meat. The other couple mentioned that they were disappointed with the mahi mahi. At $22 - 25 per entrée, "just ok" isn't acceptable.

We went last night, it was my first time but my husband and his family have gone for years. I will be back and will definitely get the crab cakes, which my husband got. I had the macadamia crusted fish, last night it was Grouper, the macadamia nuts could be chopped finer, there were big pieces and it was too nutty but the fish itself was very good. The bread we ordered was ok, they charge $2 for it but I wouldn't get it again. After paying $120 for 4 people to eat you woukd think bread would be complementary. The corn chowder was ok, I think the corn chowder at Bonefish is far superior, my husband liked it though. Mashed potatoes were very good. Our service was not very good, the server acted like he was out of it and we constantly had to ask for our drinks to be refilled, my mother in law had to ask for a second glass of wine four times. This is an old small house and as soon as you walk in you are standing on top of people earing inside, we asked to eat outside and it was very nice and comfortable. The atmosphere is very relaxed, the waiters in my opinion could have been dressed nicer, some of them looked like they rolled out of bed and cane to work. The crab cakes are so good & full of crab meat that I will go back.

Had to go in for the crab cakes best I have ever had!!! Apparently they are known for those little love cakes!! Wasn't real happy with the shrimp cocktail.... Sangria was extremely good!!! Service was a little bland... She was attentive checked on drinks... Over all it's a 3 star experience.

As is mentioned by almost every patron of this restaurant, the crab-cakes are fantastic! However, at the price, they are not substantial enough to be an entire meal. The rest of what we had was pretty bland. The building and property could use a little tidying up. Simple things, like removing fallen leaves and not leaving garden hoses in a heap, could make this place more welcoming. Overall, it seemed apparent that this establishment focuses all of their attention on one small aspect of their existence... Crab-cakes.

We spent a few days in Gulfport over New Years. Our first evening we stopped in at Backfin Blue Cafe. It was a cold night but the porch area where we were seated was nice and warm with all the heaters. Food was AMAZING. I had the special for the evening... two nice pieces of salmon with a crab cake in the center. Everyone in our group said there meal was terrific. I'm just sorry we weren't in Gulfport long enough to eat at the Backfin a 2nd night.

We are regular vacationers in Gulfport; always visit this restaurant at least twice while in town. We can't get crabcakes that even come close to the freshness and tastiness of these. All of the food here is amazing. The Owner/Chef has a definite handle on the food...the crabcakes have been amazing every year that we've stopped in. The other menu items seem to match up. We agree this is the best restaurant in Gulfport, perhaps the best in the St. Pete area. We had the opportunity to meet and talk to the owner a few times this trip...such a nice, approachable person! We even asked him about shipping crabcakes to my mom and his response was, "yes, I ship them to my mom." Thank you, Backfin Blue, for the continued consistency of wonderful food.

Lots of buzz on this place, and we'd been meaning to go for a while, but we were careful to manage expectations. It was as good or better than we'd been led to believe. There was no wait at all on a quiet Monday evening in October, but the place was at least half-filled, which is a good sign. Our server was competent and mildly friendly, and overall, service seemed fairly efficient. We sat on the patio of the old house, nicely rustic and set back just a bit from Gulfport's main shopping street. We had three things, and they were all terrific! The tomato and artichoke salad is a bowl of Italian-dressed loveliness. The meatloaf is delicious, with a thin strip of Gorgonzola running through it, bacon and brown gravy on top. The "instant" mashed potatoes that some reviewers grouse about were fabulous. If those were instant, bring 'em on! They actually have a better mouth-feel than most "homemade." And then there was the Club Blue sandwich: prime rib, bacon, and portobello, with provolone, lettuce, tomato and garlic mayo on a roll. Okay, THIS is a sandwich I'll be coming back for. At $10.5 it's a bit dear, but comes with mashed or cole slaw, and is not small. And the taste is worth every penny. We didn't try the famous crab cakes; saved that for next time. But the folks at an adjacent table had them, and we overheard the oohing and ahhing as theirs arrived and were devoured. I'd have to say Backfin Blue is a somewhat quirky, (Gulfport) Florida-style eatery with some marvelous dishes. This is not a "gourmet" high-style place, but, with reasonable expectations, you can have a wonderful dining experience here.

If I'm in Florida, I want seafood. These are by far the best crab cakes I've ever had at a restaurant! The crab corn chowder is also delicious. The rest of the table had the crab martini appetizer and it was tasty! Also has reasonably priced wine! Lost a star because it was a chilly night and the outdoor heater near our table was not working. It was chilly!

My family loved the food. I ordered the Trio special which included bacon wrapped shrimp, lobster ravioli and crab cakes - all very good (except a bit too much BBQ sauce on the shrimp). Both my wife and I agreed that the crab cakes were excellent and the Remoulade sauce was a perfect complement to the crab meat. The Lobster Ravioli was my favorite, and I would highly recommend it. Not to be outdone by the food, the service was fantastic and the special attention Bryna gave to our daughter was truly appreciated.

Best crab cakes ever! 85% crab, 15% other stuff. Grouper sandwich was ok. Not bad, but sogged the bread. Sangria (by glass) was pretty good. Just wished the offers a pitcher. Kids meal was appealing (kids ate 100%). Waitress was nice. This was he first day they were open for lunch so it wasn't crowded. Will definitely try it again.

Homey atmosphere, instant mashed potatoes, service does not match price point, decent prime rib, odd policies. We are Gulfport residents and will often try our Gulfport restaurants. What we tend to find is that either the establishments become jaded ( everyone loves us, why try to improve) or they just don't train staff properly. Not sure which, but unfortunately, we notice this is a growing pattern at these places. I worry that Backfin has fallen into that category. We arrived about 10 minutes before my grandparents and were told we couldn't be seated yet. Hmmm. So we go to the bar "area" and wait quite awkwardly for someone to acknowledge us and serve us. My wine was $6.50... Should have been $5.50. As we gaze upon the empty dining room that we cannot sit in yet...we notice the staff having to scurry around quite a bit as there is not official bartender. The rest of our party arrives and we are allowed to sit. I ordered the wild mushroom ravioli .....very blah. Quite dry. Others in the party got the prime rib. Decent, but what is up with the garlic mashed potatoes! A box, really?? With entrees running between $15-20, that is very bizarre. Yes, the corn crab chowder is very good, but I think they can't ride that coat tail much longer if they want return business. Some people will go back to all the gulfport restaurants even if they are sub par to the price, but ....

What happen to Backfin? Went this evening with friends,we all agreed not to do it again. The waitress was so flipping and not very welcoming. Some of the food was cold. They must have new owners. The service was really bad.I really liked the place at one time,a turn for the worse. The crab cakes was still good.

Wow the wait at this place was FOREVER. But then we went during their gecko fest, and every single restaurant in this town was at the least 45 minutes. The hostess was the nicest person there. That would explain why she has that job. Then again, our waitress who looked like carrot top was extremely unfriendly. For example, my husband said how big is the prime rib, well it is 9 ounces. Well visually, how big is that, oh I don't know I just serve the food. Later on, she was trying to be nice but that's too little too late lady. Hubby did not like his prime rib, there was more fat than meat on it and it did not have seasoning. I ordered the meatloaf. I asked myself after the fact, why did I order that when I can easily make it at home. The answer is that everything was too expensive. That was the cheapest on the menu at 11.99 It was okay. It came with mashed potatoes. They also have you choose a tomato artichoke salad or mixed green salad. I got both bc my husband does not eat salads. The tomato artichoke salad with some type of oil and vinegar was honestly the best part of the meal. Also, the outside patio as well was nice. The restaurant next door had nice music so that is what I was listening to.

We went for dinner and were seated immediately. The food was spectacular but everything else was horrid. So, fellow yelpers, here goes. The Good: FOOD! We had the fish spread (good, but if they would pass it through a ricer and firm it up it would be an awesome pâté) for an appetizer. My husband ordered the crab cakes and I ordered the Cajun red fish topped with jumbo sea scallops. We then exchanged halves so we had a good mix. We both agreed the crab cakes were superb and definitely worth the price. The Cajun redfish was a special and honestly it wasn't as good as it could have been. It wasn't spicy at all, and the fish was poorly seasoned. The scallops were completely undercooked. They were limp, had not been allowed to caramelize at all, and weren't seasoned. I also ordered a side of asparagus with hollandaise. The asparagus was too firm, and needed a proper cook, but the sauce was fantastic. It wasn't from a can or bottle, and I appreciate the heck out of that. The Bad: Wait staff was not friendly. The hostess was great, but the waitress never made eye contact. The waitress also kept refilling my glass without asking (I was having unsweetened tea and adding Splenda so I had to constantly adjust the flavor) and she was reaching over my plate to grab my cup. I ended up just giving up and moving my cup over to the edge of the table to prevent this. The cups are just that, big ugly plastic cups like you find inside a cheap pizzeria. The chairs were $15 cheap plastic pool chairs from Walgreens. All in all, the furniture wasn't what you expect from a place averaging $50 for two (that was $50 without drinks or dessert). The Skinny: I won't be going back. The food, while awesome, is far too pricey for the uncomfortable seating and cheap feeling. In an area where great seafood is easy to find, I am shocked they were the best of anything.

A good meal here, solid but not special. We were seated immediately on the porch, which was a pleasant surprise since it was an Art festival night. I ordered the house favorite crab cakes, my husband had prime rib topped with crab meat. Both were good not great. House salads were mediocre. The ball shaped crab cakes were a bit dry, but were loaded with large chunks of crab meat and a minimum of filler, and not at all heavy. I did need the accompanying dill dressing to counter the dryness of the crab cakes, however. I liked the unusual "edamame salad" side dish, which turned out to be chick peas, black beans, corn and edamame in a cumin flavored dressing, quite sweet but interesting and unlike anything I have had before. Husband said prime rib was very good and it looked it. The chunks of crab met that topped it off were so big I mistook them for artichoke hearts for a moment. The atmosphere is charming, especially the outdoor porch, and I would eat here again, but not before trying some other local spots first.

It was my first time visiting the area and as one of the other reviewers described the town Blackfin Blue fit perfectly. Rolling in on a Saturday at 8pm with a party of 4 and no reservations can be disastrous but we were seated immediately on the patio where we wanted. Service was prompt & friendly though I had a more difficult time deciding a wine pairing for my main course our waiter took my order after bringing my friends their drinks and delivered the glass before the salad course. The item I really loved here was the edamame salad. I've add this variation before but there's is really unique using other vegetables such as corn to give texture and an almost slaw like dressing to add brightness. I had the mushroom ravioli with chicken and enjoyed it very much. Arguably it's nothing amazing but the chicken was succulent, the mushroom stuffing had a broad base of flavors and the sauce wasn't overwhelming the in volume or taste of the pasta. There is a lot to be said about a simple dish executed well. I would not have this dish with the Zin Sin Zinfandel as it's too fruity to really pair correctly. Try the Ravenswood or a pinot noir. Lastly, order dessert. The key lime pie is executed well with more of a cheesecake consistency but the Mississipi Mud Pie is fantastic. Two people can easily split one slice, such is it's richness. The service was very tolerating that our party lounged on the deck for some time and we never felt rushed, only as we left did we notice the chairs stacked on tables already.

For the past roughly 23 years I have been visiting my family in the St. Pete Beach area about twice a year. Each time it is about a week...so give or take a week or two I've spent about a year in Florida. I've seen parts of it grow and of course the majority of it either stagnate or pass on. One part that has grown is the appetite for better dining experiences...effin thank God. Seriously, up to about 5 years ago there were few eating options outside: a national chain (read Applebees), a buffet w/ an early bird special, a transplant who opened up a pizza place but wasn't retired yet, or...your grandparents cooking. The pizza places are always just passable. Grandparents' cooking usually rocks but its difficult to meet other sexy fun singles near their china hutch and eating over doilies. So...places like the Backefin Blue Cafe have started to spring up. Its menu is very Floridian w/o the 4pm eating time or buffet feel. That is to say the menu reflects the culture and food Florida has to offer, e.g. seafood or Caribbean. The service is always pleasant and they do well with large or small parties. They also know that a portion of their patrons may be elderly and accommodate them well too. The portions are just right w/o being too large and it is always a tasty place to go when you are in town. The prices run about $10-15/plate but it is inexpensive for what you get. Patio seating is a must for a true Floridian/Gulfport dining experience. Go...you won't be disappointed.

The Crabcakes are GREAT... however, I was really disappointed by the mashed potatoes. I swear they were instant. They just had "that" flavor and texture. Not a particularly good deal for the price if that is the case. Service was attentive and courteous. Key lime pie wonderful.

Great crab! I had the crab cakes and the portabello stuffed crab. Both were delish. My wife had a crab salad. Besides tasting excellent, it was so large she couldn't finish it all. The Key Lime Pie was one of the best I've had in a long time. I've been trying to convince her to come here for awhile. We'll definitely be back, even with the half hour drive for us to get here.

This place is located in the artsy, bohemian area of Gulfport, a little enclave of St.Pete. The place is always crowed, expect a wait if you don't have a reservation, and the tables are a bit too close together. However, the food has always been pretty good. They have very good crabcakes and other seafood. Definitely a "Florida seafood" feel to it and a local fave but I feel that for the price and wait time/ hassle, there are others that surpass. The only reason for the 3 star rating is the food quality.

Decent food, nice ambiance. Wait staff friendly. Had crab cake sandwich. Very little bread crumbs mostly crab. Very good, diminished by the fact that garlic mashed potatoes were made with an instant mix.

DIRTY ICE!

  • Ed D.

Went there on vacation with the bf and his parents. It was fantastic! His dad had one of the best porterhouse steaks he's ever had, his words. I had the crab cakes, and the whole table agreed they were some of the best we've ever had as well.

Awesome Crab Cakes. The prime rib was nice and rare and the service was great too. all around great experience. My wife and I went there for our anniversary dinner and were very pleased. Thank you.

Tho it was busy at 7 pm, the service was good, efficient and friendly. We shared the macadamian nut encrusted mahi mahi, very tasty with garlic potatoes and fresh salad. A bit loud inside, but the place was packed full of families.

Crab-cakes.

This place is so cool looking, it's a little house turned into a restaurant. Gulfport's downtown is nice and this has got to be the coolest looking place to me. The food was good and the service too.
