I've eaten killer Mexican in Sonora, So Cal, Tucson AZ and all up and down the Buford Highway in Atlanta. El Jacalito is exactly what it calls itself - Home Cooking. Better than 95% of the above. This is the Mexican equivalent of what we call a meat and three in the South. Momma in the kitchen cooking it right. Had the Lengua (Tongue) and Barbacoa tacos and they were melt in the mouth wonderful. My companions had the enchiladas with green sauce and the shrimp fajitas. Rave reviews all around. The salsa bar has several choices to liven up the main dish and they are all good. Don't expect chips and salsa, it ain't gonna happen. Ambiance has more of a pool hall feel, but that's part of the charm. You would pay 3x what they charge for food this good in a trendy Mexican restaurant in a major city. All the Atlanta, Montgomery and Birmingham new money couples spending spring break and the summer on 30A have no idea that a great kitchen like this is a 20 minute drive away. If you go, don't tell your friends. Lets keep this jewel to ourselves.

Saw the other 5 star Yelp reviews and decided to try it for dinner. Wonderful, best Mexican food I have tasted in many years. Authentic flavors - the real thing! Don't miss it! It's simple, very clean, with new booths and tables too. There is a small Mexican market there as well. The kitchen looks modern, clean and well equipped. Super happy nice people; looks family owned. Everything is cooked fresh and the salsa bar is well stocked and also very fresh. $7.99 for a full dinner and they have a great selection of unusual drinks. Absolutely great!

This is the kind of find my husband and I love to make. I swear the best tacos I've ever had always came from a little hole in the wall. It's not fancy but we aren't there for the decorations! My husband and I got carne asada which was amazing. Out son got enchilada and taco and he says they were the best he ever had! If we lived here, we would be regulars. Alas, we head back out of state tomorrow. Don't let the outside fool you, and don't you dare pass up this delicious food.

Wasn't sure about this place. It didn't look very gringo friendly! I mean, just look at the front! Thought I'd have to brush up on my Spanish if I walked into the joint! I didn't need to call Mexico, which looked like all this place was good for. WOW was I wrong! My family ate there. It was incredibly authentic, exceptionally friendly, and absolutely delicious! We had the chimichanga, tamales, quesadillas, and tacos. It was all good, but the tacos have to be the best tacos south of the border, pun intended! They were fantastic. The atmosphere? There is none. But plenty of room to sit down and it is very clean. Owner is extremely friendly and came out to the table to talk with us. They have been there 7 years, and we plan on going back often! Oh, and they speak English!! :-)

Omg!!!! So good and I'll be back. Homemade and fresh cooked. Highly recommend and everything is equal well done. Fluffy rice, Hot salsa, fresh guacamole and homemade Chips. A great place in a little unknown spot. If you are in our town stop in, looks may be deceiving but don't drive by because of that.

Very authentic food with reasonable prices that clearly caters to the local Mexican community, as well as some locals. You know you found a decent spot when people who grew up in this culture are waiting in line. They have a salsa bar with about 15 different homemade salsas that you can help yourself to. The atmosphere is interesting, part convenience store selling phone cards to tortillas, then a small open kitchen and seating area. We get "to-go" rather than eat in. The menu is expansive for such a small operation. Give it a try, no Taco Bell aqui!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
