We were hungry after the beach and stopped at the Seafood Shack for lunch. We started with a basket of hush puppies which were amazing. I had the shrimp and scallops and chose to have them sautéed instead of fried which was a mistake. They were cooked fine but they lacked taste. My husband ordered the Reuben and ate every bit and my friend loved her blackened chicken sandwich. She had it lightly blackened which made it less spicy and it was nice to have that option.

On the water in Cortez before crossing the bridge to the island. Restaurant is very casual but loud when crowded. Had the blackened grouper. Specifically asked them to add more spice. They did and even yummier. Wait staff seemed tired and understaffed. Did a good job trying to keep our table of 6 satisfied? The view over the water isn't bad and yes, it d I e's smell fishy, because you're on the water and they serve fish. Nothing remarkable but decent for seafood if out of town.

Took a little long to get our food, but worth the wait. Staff friendly. Chicken sandwich with sun dried tomato aioli was awesome! Nice atmosphere.

This place deserves zero stars. When ordering a burger I informed the server that I was allergic to onions so to make sure they were not on it. When my burger came out it had fried onions on it. I let the manager know (since she is the one that brought the food out) and the manager replied with "they are fried onions not raw" then walked away. When the server returned I gave her my burger and let her know I could not eat it due to onions being on it. She told me they would make me a new one and returned in under a minute with a burger (I knew something was wierd because it takes more than 45 seconds to make a burger ). IT WAS THE SAME ONE THEY GAVE ME BEFORE. All she did was wipe the onions off. I could see the onion out line in the cheese and there were still small pieces in the burger and on my plate. When I told her what she did she tried to blame it on the cook. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS PLACE AGAIN. They are unprofessional and don't care about the safety of their costumer. If I would have eaten that burger I would be in the hospital and this would have been way worse!

This restaurant has new owners. There is NOTHING on the new menu that was on the old, so if you are coming here for an old favorite, you will not find it. Gone are favorite things like the best clam chowder, famous fish fingers, and seafood au gratin. You will also have to take out a loan to pay for your dinner - average price is $20.00 now. The owners obviously have not spent much time talking to their customers and researching other restaurants/menus/prices in the area. ISadly, we won't be back, but if you know where the former cook works now, please let me know!

On a beautiful evening we decided to visit the Seafood Shack, eat, and enjoy the sunset. The patio was crowded so we decided to go inside and find the hostess and see about a table. She was completely overwhelmed with what her hostess duties were. She had no idea when a table would be available, no beeper to notify us should a table become available, and no paper to write our name on a waiting list. When I questioned her she vaguely said she would find us. When I asked if other guest would just take an empty patio table before we were seated she had no answer. The hostess is the first impression a guest experiences. We quickly decided this was going to go no where and left the establishment. In a tourist area, with a plethora of excellent eating establishments the Seafood Shack cannot afford such poor customer service. This restaurant needs hands on management and customer service training. I would not recommend this restaurant.

Went there for the first time last month with some friends that were down from New England. The new look and atmosphere are perfect....the service on the other hand was slow and frustrating. As we were waiting for a table we went to the bar to order drinks. Bartenders both looked at us several times but didn't acknowledge or try to take our order. Fifteen minutes later (still no drinks) we were seated and ordered drinks from the waiter with our dinner. Eventually had to go BACK to the bar because our waiter was non responsive and didn't check on us at all after taking our order. The food was pretty good, but it took a very long time to come out. We were there for two hours and most of that time was spent waiting. As this place was recently reopened, I assume that the customer service issues are being addressed, but when paying so much for dinner and drinks customers expect quick, responsive service. Not satisfied....

As a local, I am always weary of touristy seafood restaurants. I came to this establishment because my parents wanted to and they win in food decisions. I didn't have any expectations but unfortunately, even with no expectations I was still let down. We got sat after a 10 minute wait or so which was fine. Our waiter took a hot minute to show up and was just plain awkward. He took drink orders, brought those to us and then didn't reappear for at least 10 minutes. We finally ordered appetizers and finally received them but alas, we had not gotten any silverware. When my brother asked the hostess for silverware she gave him attitude and said he shouldn't have just seated himself and should have gone to her for seating, which we did when we got there... We saw our waiter talking to someone and motioned we needed silverware and he just stared at us from across the room like we were absurd for needing utensils. Someone I presume was a manager or something saw our distress signal and brought us our utensils and we ate the appetizers (fish dip and coconut shrimp) which were quite delightful. My brother and I were anxiously awaiting our blue crab Mac and cheese dinners though and to our dismay were disappointed simply upon first sight. This Mac and cheese resembled gritty, runny, Alfredo instead. This is also what it tasted like. There was no seasoning whatsoever and I had to put embarrassing amounts of salt on it just to get a little something out of the dish. The crab didn't seem like crab, more like crab flavored mush. No one at my table said anything positive about their meals, which is quite the "accomplishment" seeing as my family is usually easily pleased when it comes to dinner. I will say that my side order of truffle fries were awesome. But I do know of other places I can get them, along with an outstanding entree. I'm sad my dad had to pay for such an expensive meal that didn't have a taste to match the price. This is certainly one of those tourist restaurants I wouldn't recommend to people. The view is great, but not the only great view in the area and not enough of a reason for me to go back.

Food was good although several items on the menu were not available. Enjoyed the local catch of the day. Margaritas were a little disappointing. Staff was friendly and pointed out dolphins in the bay.

We have been coming to the Seafood Shack for years. The last time we were there after the new owners, we saw some changes (to the good) but the menu hadn't changed, (thankfully) and the food was as good as in previous visits. The service has always been a bit spotty but not terrible. However on our last visit (27 Jan 2015) everything had changed and not for the better. The service was normal. But the menu is now just a piece of paper, (stains are free) Gone are the fish fingers, mussels, (but you can get over-sweetened chili) and the key lime pie is now store bought (at twice the price) with soggy crust. They have added a huge pile of meringue to try to compensate but to no avail. We scraped ours off. The cole slaw is boring and un-appetizing. Be sure to bring a "Brinks" truck with you to pay for your meal. Our lunch was $64, and we went home hungry. Sorry to say, we will NOT be back. I would like to know where the old chef went so we could go there.

Awful, where to start.....The staff was friendly but very under trained, they had no idea what they were doing. If you like burping up gross food all night then you're in business. Sorry but really bad.

Don't come here for fast service. Our waitress has apparently had more to drink than I have, and I'm the one on vacation. Drinks were out in a few minutes. It then took 15 minutes to take our order. I may edit this after we eat. But I have had time to write the review waiting on our food.

I should have know something wasn't great when I went for lunch and only 3 other tables were occupied. I ordered the clam chowder I didn't take to long to come out but it was warm not hot. It was not all that tasty and not full of clams like some of the area restaurants. The decor is dark and boring. I know it's dockside but this is just not inviting. I paid and left because I just didn't want to spend any more time here

  • Megan F.

Staff was friendly but everything else left much to be desired. Not busy at all and our food took quite some time to get to the table. I also ordered soup and it never came. I ordered the grilled grouper and was not impressed. The view is great, and again, the staff is kind! Just need to work on service and food quality.

    (1)
  • Karen R.

My grouper was seasoned well (blackened) but the texture was bad. The blue cheese dressing was so thick it wouldn't pour. My daughter had shrimp Alfredo and it was flavorless and dry with pools of butter on the bottom. The service was super slow.I would not recommend this restaurant!

Wow! Its Wednesday night and there is two other small groups here and we've been waiting 25 plus minutes for our food!

  • John B.

The service was very good. The meals came out quickly. I had the lightly blackened grouper and my wife had the grilled grouper. My meal was prepared correctly. Just the right amount of seasoning. My wife's grouper had a slightly fishy taste, but that may have been due to the lack of seasoning. Overall a very good meal. Will visit again.

Was really looking forward to a great seafood dinner. Was extremely disappointed. The calamari wasn't fresh and the lobster was way over cooked.

New manager from 'up north" firing everyone from the cook to the dockmaster, ruining the chances for a successful rebirth of this old Cortez favorite. Frozen seafood, fried in beer batter ridiculously over priced

Average food and bland atmosphere. Had dinner here recently and first impression was confusion. Took a minute to figure out how to enter the restaurant side. Upon entering, it was a shock of old wood - everywhere. The tables, chairs, ceiling, just a bunch of blah. It's all dark brown. The lighting was terrible and a bit hard to read the menu. I had fish and chips, minus the chips because they are not fresh, but frozen. Baked potato was great. Fish was good, seemed fresh. two at my table had the prime rib. They said it was good, but both wished the beef juice was on the side, not drowning the meat. Other friend had the seafood platter and said it was average. Near the end of our meal (thankfully), the entire place filled with smoke from the kitchen. Seemed like something in the fryer. It smelled terrible and had to shower and change clothes pronto! Overall, will not go back. I think there is better seafood for the same price.

  • Karl S.

It so unfortunate that I can't give less than one star - we waited for over an hour for a pretty non complicated order and of mediocre quality. The wait staff was great - the management left something to be desired. Unapologetic and honestly quite ridiculous in their approach to customer service. We have been going here for a number of years - sadly we won't be back.

My family and I had dinner the other night and were pretty disappointed ! Despite the poor food quality and cheesy touristy island decor, the management has a "better than everyone " attitude! This place does NOT represent the real Cortez!!! If you are looking for real food, I suggest staying away from here. I've been coming to Cortez my whole life and this is by far the worst restaurant in the vicinity! We thought we would give it a chance since it had been taken over by new ownership. Do your research, there are some wonderful restaurants in the area and this is definitely not one of them.

GET THE SHRIMP AND GRITS. It comes with a ton of Andouille sausage and other yummy stuff, best I've ever had. My husband's grouper sandwich was huge and very good. My compliments to the chef! My only complaint is the atmosphere could be slightly nicer...casual is fine but the tables shouldn't be sticky...

  • Amber A.

I'm not sure about the previous negative reviews, but we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. We ordered the crabby nachos, fish and chips, and the fisherman's platter. Everything was really good and the service could not be beat. My husband was disappointed with the portion size of the fisherman's platter, it could have been bigger go the price but other than that, we could not have been happier. We will return.

I went here with my family while on vacation. A couple of my brothers and I got there Fisherman's basket and it was extremely over blackened. My family had been here before and really enjoyed it. I am not sure if it was a different crew in the kitchen or what. One of my brothers sent is food back to the kitchen as he could not stomach how salty and over seasoned the food was. I honestly should have returned mine as well as I did not enjoy it. The tropical rice that was served with very tasty. I would be willing to go here again but I would get my food grilled.

Plenty of parking. Nice view. Casual, basic but good assorted menu. Parmesan truffle fries on the side are crispy and tasty...are our favorite. Bloody Mary's are good for $6, especially when they dress up the drink, with salted rim, hot bean and olives. Steamers are delicious with the Toast to soak it all up. Fresh shell fish shucked from bins in the dining area. Great location to float up on with your boat. Waitstaff are friendly and accommodating. An outside bar area would be a good idea since the view is so enjoyable.

Tequila Bloody's and Breakfast on the water with a beautiful view and a gorgeous girl, what more could one ask for? We're locals and, despite the few lame but negative reviews, we love this place!! The food, oysters and drinks are always on point!! Keep up the good work guys!!

Have passed the sign for this place every time we visit Anna Maria Island the other day I pulled in to make a turn around and decide to give it a try. It was wonderful! We sat at the bar with the intent of just having a drink and an appetizer. The bartender Zack was so welcoming and friendly knowledgable about the menu and the area. We had the fried clam app. These were not frozen type but locally dug clams that were in a great breading and fried to perfection not a hint of grease just perfect. After the appetizer we were hooked and decided to have dinner. My wife had a lobster roll which was a little different then she is used to at home but she said it was very good., I had the fish and chips which was being done that day with grouper I substituted rice for the fries and it was all wonderful not at all heavy and greasy but fried perfectly light and crisp a home run. We shared a creme brûlée for desert once again great. Zack told us this place changed hands a while back and is totally different than it use to be no hot dogs on the menu. I have to say the food was outstanding but Zack made the place he is just who you want up front he is an asset to this place.

The Seafood Shack is supposed to have changed owners and we heard that food was better. It was not. Clam chowder was like wall paper paste except thicker and more tasteless. The crab cakes were tiny, finely ground up mush institutional patties and deep fried sitting on a base of (probably bottled) tarter sauce - boring! The Lobster and Shrimp Salad appeared to have some tiny chucks of seafood and the dressing was rather bland and overpriced for what you receive. I must say that the table next to us ordered burgers and rubins and they looked pretty good the this is the "Seafood Shack!" The the service was good and the location is nice. This is the only reason to give them one star. There are four superior restaurants within a 5 minute walk from this place.

Oysters were huge and juicy, but not very briny. Mignette was wonderful, but not cold enough. Chef Gerard was very kind to pick out the very best and biggest oysters for me. Bartender Donna was very nice too and had a long chat with her. Bloody Mary was ok, but a little weak.

My wife and I showed up 20 minutes before closing on a Sunday evening. Hostess was happy to seat us and waiter was wonderful. I ordered Gulf Shrimp, my wife had the Fisherman's Platter, and we loved it. Not sure about the negative remarks, but our experience couldn't have been much better. They've really set the bar high for our next visit.

The owner took back over late last year and the place is AWESOME now. I had stopped going there in 2011, and 2012, but I eat there twice a week now. The views are beautiful, on the water, and prices are very good now. The food has always been excellent. They have a prime rib special that is $12.95 and the cut is always nice, it comes with a nice house salad, a baked potato or fries and a few other things. I eat out almost every night and this is my pick in the entire town. More so if I have out of town guests. The staff can be a little rude-depending on who you get--just ignore that, everything else is far worth it.

We are locals and I had heard about the new owners, remodel and new menu so I waned to give it a try. Took my little girl there for a late lunch on Sunday before picking up bait at Annie's. Good kids menu, she had the chicken fingers and they were plentiful and good. Me, grouper sandwich, grilled, very good. The other food being served around us looked good as well. So, my wife's brother and his wife flew in from Boston yesterday and I suggested we have dinner at the newly transformed Seafood Shack. Big mistake, from the beginning. Took 15 minutes for a waiter to even recognize our presence. Took another 20 minutes to get drinks. Ordered the Crabby Nachos as a start. Don't get this as it looked as if the cook drizzled a very light layer of melted white Velveeta over the top with a very, very light sprinkling of something I think was crab. After a bite of about two chips each between the four of us, we were left with a pile of chips with nothing on them. Oh, and we were done with the nachos before the waiter even brought us plates and silverware after asking several times. My wife's brother ordered a side salad, which never came, he finally had to ask. We politely told the waiter about what we thought of the nachos and he abruptly said "fill out a comment card." Not apologetic at all. Now, on to the entrees, which took nearly an hour to get even though the place had slowed at nearly 8:30. Little girl's pizza was good. My blackened grouper was overcooked and tough, sides of potatoes and greens were nasty. An order of fish and chips was OK, not spectacular. Grouper sandwich was OK. My wife ordered the lobster mac and cheese; the sauce was very bland and we struggled to find any lobster meat. This morning, she said she was "burping it up" all night. Not pleasant. Prices are very high and the service staff needs substantial training. The atmosphere is good, but it is very loud. Like the new décor. We'll stick to Tide Tables across the street for the near future and hope the new owners can get this worked out as it could be a great venue with the location.

Came once before with a large group and there was a wait, so we went to the bar to grab drinks. The wait was probably 45 minutes and by the time they called our name to be seated, we still hadn't been served at the bar. Once we were seated at the table, we had to wait eons for drinks so my party started ordering them 2 at a time. Tried it out again last night, drink service was still very slow but my biggest issue was that our waitress was clearly high out of her mind. She could barely form a sentence and her eyes were rolling all over the place. I recognized her as a former bar tender at another AMI establishment, where I would watch her chug beers and smoke cigarettes while working (she no longer works at the other place and that restaurant has since been remodeled and is under new ownership). She made me feel pretty uncomfortable and I thought about alerting the manager or something but in the end did not. They were out of the first 2 things I tried to order, so I went with the lobster mac and cheese which was fine.

We arrived for dinner on 7/23 at 6:30. We had a party of 14, we were seated pretty quickly for the size of our party, this is the last good thing that happened to us during the evening. After being seated we were asked about out drink orders, when they finally arrived 2 at a time, half of the drinks were given to the wrong people and 3 drinks were missed. On top of that we had to go to the bar to ask for our waters. I would think having a buser or a helper asking the table if anyone wants water would be the right thing. This was the first time our group had eaten here under the new ownership as we had eaten at this establishment 2 other times under the previous owners. Thought the food under the new ownership would be a lot more to talk about, our thoughts were wrong. Oysters on the half were good, but nature made them that way. Ordered house Caesar Salad, dressing came on the side, might as well ordered a side of ranch, croutons were soggy. Clam Chowder was a salt lick. Management set the staff up to fail, food on the other hand- maybe a new chef.

We had a group of 10 people. We called ahead but they don't take reservations unfortunately, but luckily it's the off season so they were not very busy at 7pm on a rainy Wednesday night. Everyone was very very friendly, from when I called in, to when we were seated, to who waited us. The food was pretty slow at getting to us, but we were a big group. I wasn't super hungry so I just got coconut shrimp which was very yummy, I just wish it had come with a few more shrimp! It was not greasy like some coconut shrimp can be. My husband got the Fishermans Platter with a crab cake, cod I think, shrimp, slaw and coconut rice. You get the choice of fried or blackened and he got blackened. Everything was really good except the shrimp. It was horrifically over seasoned and was pretty inedible. You couldn't even taste the shrimp it's self, it just tasted like pure salt. His two brothers got the same thing and their shrimp was all the same. One brother couldn't stomach it at all and the waitress was very nice about getting him something else. Some of us ordered dessert and they took dessert off the bill as well. I didn't have any dessert so I can't make any comments about that. Despite the over seasoned shrimp it was all very very good, great friendly service and I would certainly come back again.

My review is a simple question..... If you get a drink, take a sip, and spill it...should you you pay full price.for the replacement? This is that kind of place...full price for the spilled drink. Maybe it's right. Maybe it's wrong. But it sure makes you feel crummy about the experience. Lesson: don't spill anything.

August 24, 2015 Kevin was our server, very informative. Excellent margarita 5.00. I had grouper with braised collards and hash potatoes. All very delicious. With view of water and sunset. We were happy happy.

We tried the catch of the day which were the Sheep's Head and Mahi Mahi. Both were wonderfully prepared and served at a perfect temperature. Our server, Amanda, took great care of us. The only reason for my four stars instead of five is the time it took to be seated when the restraint wasn't even very busy.

The wife kids and I Just ate at the seafood shack. We had the clam strips and hush puppies for appetizer. Mound of clam strips seasoned well and tender, and hush puppies just a little over done but still good. I had a piña collada that was good. Entree was a prime rib and seasoned well with garlic mashed potatoes for me. We would return and recommended for atmosphere on the water and decent food.

Decided to give the Seafood Shack one last try. We were a party of 5. The place was not busy at all maybe 3 tables. The waitress was a nice person but didnt know if there were any specials as they had been wine tasting upstairs.!!! Service was slow and parts of our order were missing. Such a shame. This place could be a gold mine. Beautiful location...water views..and decent parking.

The location is nice but the food was not good it lacked taste. It was not worth the 90 dollar bill there are other restaurants much better than this one I tried the lobster roll and tacos where without taste and the like stet roll was hard to finish.

My family has been patronizing the Seafood Shack for literally decades - we used to visit almost every Monday night and sit upstairs - back when the Shack was really the only place to go enjoy a nice dinner with a waterfront view. As such, we all hold a soft spot for this place. The redesign is refreshing and the owners should be commended. I'm a graphic designer and love their new logo/brand. The Sea Hagg led the interior redesign and it's fabulous. Nautical and a little kitschy without being cheesy or overdone. But you're wondering about the food... To preface this, our family is typically a "special order" table. Everyone seems to want "no THIS, but THAT on the side," and so on. I had the Grouper Reuben. It was good, not great. Fish & chips ordered by a companion looked good. The snapper entree didn't disappoint. Fisherman's Platter was ordered lightly blackened, but was definitely full-strength. Which is a point I'd like to make: the server was friendly and prompt, but basically 75% of our special requests were NOT accommodated. Whether fault lied with the kitchen or service staff, not sure. I've worked in the restaurant business for a long time and I understand how challenging these types of tables are. But we're nice people and tip well, so it shouldn't matter... we want what we want, and we're willing to pay for it. Bottom line: my sister put it best when she said "they have all the ingredients" (pun intended) of bringing the Seafood Shack back to glory. Fresh look, comfortable feel, interesting menu. I just wish the deliverables were stronger: food was better for the price (AMI prices, Cortez location) and service more on point. Hopefully it does well so we have one more place to pull up on the boat and have a couple beers & burgers.

Was greeted by Cindy who as always is quick to get you seated. Sat at our table for fifteen minutes before walking out, due to never being greeted. The remodel is beautiful. Not crazy about the new staff or the looks of the new menu. Probably will not be returning. It's a shame Ham Jones sold the place before he passed away.

Went here on Easter Sunday after a day at the beach. The food was delicious!!! We tried a little of everything. We tried the mahi mahi (blackened), sirloin steak, crab cakes, wings, and mussels. I truly recommend the mussels. The sauce was white and one of the best sauce we have tried. This is a must go to restaurant if you in the area.

I spent the previous two Snowbird seasons in this area and probably should have filed a Yelp on this place before leaving. Better late than never. This was my go-to place for seafood without the frills. You want atmosphere, quiet, dimly-lit and questionable seafood? Go somewhere else. This place is always busy and for a good reason. It's just great food at reasonable prices. You will notice a sea of white hair as you enter. This is usually a sign that the prices are good. The White Sea begins to dissipate and color up after its peak dinner time of 4pm, when the families and touristas begin to flock in. Every time I had company in from out of town or wanted to go someplace with a local, this was the first choice. I'm especially fond of the blackened Grouper sandwich and have to fess up to ordering it every time I went cause I loved it so much. My dinner guests ordered an array of choices over our visits, all of which were ample and tasty. Revel in the boisterous, down-home, unpretentious atmosphere while you enjoy a gorgeous sunset over the bay outside, chow down on chowder, munch your Mahi and gum your Grouper. It doesn't get much better.

Nice place. Beautiful scenery (if your able to get seated by a widow). They have delicious food(especially their shrimp). There would have been a wait, but the hostess offered to serve us as long as we didn't mind. We have come here twice before and definitely will return! Recommend to others. Resonable prices for the amount of food!

I have been here several times and I have to give it the creditit is due. WE have tried several things and almost all of it has been good. Their service is friendly and attentive. Once or twice when it was busy - the service does slow down. We have tried their fish and their burgers as well as some apps. The only thing I had a problem with once was the broiled scallops. And that day I think it was the scallops. As I did have fried scallops next time I went and they were delicious. The burgers are good as is the fish. The seafood au gratin was really thick and rich. The fried stuff is always good! They're clam chowder was pretty good. Nice chunks of clams. All and all - It's not out of this world but it is good and I would have no problems sending someone there for a meal or a few drinks out on the deck. The place has a beautiful setting - right on the water with boats all around. Picnic tables serve as outside seating with umbrellas. Nice place to sit for some good food and drink.

The Seafood Shack is one of a few places that make for decent boating pitstops. Ample docking makes for an easy in and out, the atmosphere is very laid back, and the food is pretty good. If your boating to and from Sarasota to Tampa, mark this spot in your chart plotter. You'll want to make a stop here.

First time on the west cost of Florida. Excited to get my seafood eat on and this place was meh. Went for dinner on a Sunday. Service was ok, our waiter must have been in a bad mood. He was very short with us. Still we were there for the food. We ordered crab cakes, calamari, as an appetizer and grouper for dinner. The crab cakes were more bread than crab and bland. The calamari was super greasy n the marinara sauce was bland. The grouper dinner was ok, it could have been cooked longer since I ordered it charred grilled..dinner was disappointing.

I had to chuckle at the previous reviewer who complained about her Philly cheesesteak. This is a seafood place in Florida, get what they know, and WOW do they know seafood. Start with the clam chowder, savor the real chunks of clam you get in it. 5 stars just for that. I had a grouper sandwich fried which was done to perfection and the fries were fried just right. A very nice lunch. I asked the patrons at the next table how their meals were (all seafood) and they raved about them. A table of seniors who obviously live in the area (I was a tourist) so they cinched the deal. I will be back.

The view is nice, but that's about it. The food and staff are quite unremarkable. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak; which I was told was the best item on the menu, but there was nothing special about it.

We ate there with 8 of us. The fish fingers were very good. Nicely fried and the french fries were good too. Someone in the party got the streamed shrimp and said they were really good and fresh. The fried scallops were great as well. We would definitely go back. The serve was on the slow side but then again we are on vacation we have time.
