This place is nestled in the heart of Brandon, Florida. I decided to eat here for dinner one weekend evening and was amazed by the results. For starters, they have sake flights which I've never seen and any other sushi place I've been so far. The remaining drink menu is pretty extensive with your choices of other different types of sake, beer, wine, and Japanese/Korean inspired cocktail drinks. They have a very nice selection of Japanese and Korean entrées and appetizers. The sushi, of course, is the most popular item on the menu. My favorite is the dragon roll they have there. Good stuff! The waitstaff is very timely and friendly. The atmosphere has an incredibly trendy vibe with black-and-white decore and LED lighting. I enjoy glancing over at their LED bubble fountain every now and then. All in all, a very aesthetically pleasing and tasty experience. I would totally recommend this to anyone who happens to be in the Brandon area and also enjoys good sushi and/or Korean/Japanese cuisine.

I'm in love! Yes we finally found a fantastic go to place for sushi and a lot of other fantastic Asian food! The restaurant is updated, clean and easy to find. The food is awesome and I can't wait to try more! If you're looking for a great place, this is IT!

This is my second time visiting Sushi Maru. My first time, about six months ago, wasn't good. It took some time, but I did want to try it again. The second visit was much better than the first. I don't like writing three star reviews, because I feel like it's a bad rating, though, it's not. It's an average rating. I didn't find Sushi Maru had anything special to offer. If anything, I feel they fell short of expectations considering the price. This place is super expensive for an average strip mall sushi restaurant. This time, we had the crab rangoon, Playboy, Red Dragon, and Sake Rotika. All three were good, but I didn't really notice anything different between the Red Dragon and the Sake Rotika. One is made with salmon, and the other has tuna, but the taste was nearly identical. They were just loaded down with the sauce, it was a little overpowering. The crab rangoon were okay. Not bad, but I wouldn't order them again. Overall, I think this is a good restaurant that gets a little overzealous with the sauce, and has an overpriced menu.

Very accommodating to special requests. Did not care for the ginger dressing, was very sweet. I wish there were more cucumber wrapped or low carb options. There is a bell to ring when you have a question or are ready to order-- a little weird. Fish was very fresh. The spicy tuna left a lot to be desired; interesting as its a standard and shouldn't be hard to mess up. Had a nice, reasonable lunch offering.

The sushi is awesome. The dumplings are also good. The teriyaki chicken was dry and bland. Good atmosphere and service.

This restaurant is located in the same strip mall as Outback. The parking lot is not very big and was full when we came for dinner. There was street parking available and also additional parking in the next lot over (still very close by). The décor is modern and we were seated at a comfortable booth. The wait staff is nice and friendly. There's also a service button at the tables near the walls that you can push for service. Brilliant! I've been here a few times and the food and service is consistently good. Scallops - $9 Yum!! Good scallops are hard to find, so I give Maru a big ole high five for this. The texture was nice and dense. The salad that came with it was also very good! Volcano - $10 - Fantastic!! There was so much to love about this roll. It's big and had great flavors. The pile of shredded imitation crab on top was surprisingly good. Buddah Roll - $11 This roll is quite large and filling. It is deep fried, but there were a few bites that tasted a little fishy. I give it a B for flavor. The waiter said it was a very popular roll. Salmon Nigiri - $4.25 (2 pieces) - Wow!! Fresh, buttery and delicious. I must say, this is what got my 5 stars review. St. Patrick Roll - Not sure if this one is seasonal, but it was pretty tasty. Maybe I'm just a sucker for avocado. On Tuesdays, there's a buy 1 get 1 free drink special for certain beer and wine, e.g regular price for a bottle of Asahi is $5 and a glass of Merlot is $9. This is a pretty good deal, especially if you want to share with your dining companion.

I first ate here several months back while on a date. The date was a complete bust, but I remember enjoying the sushi quite a bit. Everything was ordered for me so I didn't know what I had, but I enjoyed everything enough to want to return. I came back this week, and this time took part in the selections. We ordered the Bahama Mama Roll, the Super Mexican Roll, the Volcano Roll, and the Bagel. They were all delicious. The Bahama Mama is an oddly enjoyable and sweet concoction, with shrimp tempura, pineapple, and sweet coconut flakes. The Super Mexican is wonderfully spicy, the Bagel tasted as expected, and although not my favorite Volcano, it was definitely enjoyable. I am eager to return and try other items on their menu. Parking can be a challenge. The buttons on the wall behind the table are to summon your server...had no idea they were there until my son started playing with it and the server promptly came over.

I love coming to this place! The sushi is great. Atmosphere is laid back, the Manager is so sweet and always takes good care of us! My favorite is the Red dragon and the Lava roll. The dumpling is a must have.

Lord knows, I do not eat out ANYWHERE WITHOUT first researching yelp. I found this place searching by proximity. I just had to see what place had nearly perfect rating. A SUSHI JOINT WITH KOREAN FUSION?? ERRR...WELL JUST TAKE ALL MY MONEY WHY DON'T YA? I stopped in after a little shopping on my way home. I ordered the Dynamite Roll and Mt. Fuji. I won't lie. I GOT MY ENTIRE LIFE FROM EATING THIS FOOD! ALLL OF IT! THE BAN CHAN AND BOTH ROLLS!! ERRRRMUH GAWDT!! (It was quite a bit of food so I had left overs for the next day. The rolls can be shared in my opinion) I started talking to one of the girls that works here named Christine and she was just a sweet as can be. Look...THIS SUSHI IS AHHHMAAZZINGGGG!!!! THE SERVICE IS GREAT!! However, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention price. Uh...$13 COLD HARD ones for both rolls I ordered. It's a little pricey. Even for good sushi. (I was about to require some after hours action from myself when the food rang up. Sheesh) This is a good quality establishment and by next year, I will be able to claim them on my taxes. Plenty of my money will be spent here. I want some as I type this. UGH! I can't wait to go back!!

    * important note: if you are a sushi connoisseur and crave things such as Uni,eel, or sashimi then this is not the place for you. The sushi is very Americanized and covered with wasabi mayo and Panko crumbs. * it was only after our waiter noticed our annoyance that he became very attentive which should not be the case or the need in order to get good service. After seeing all the great reviews of this place we thought we'd check it out. The first sign of discontent came when we waited nearly 20 minutes for our waiter to take our order. Once the waiter knew of our annoyance he was very attentive. The table next to us had patrons that had a gluten allergy. It was sad to watch someone who is new to the gluten-free diet having to shift through the menu to find something only to be brought the wrong thing repeatedly. Even though she made it very clear to the waiter and the person who I assume was the manager that she had a gluten allergy. No one offered her options on the menu to help her navigate for a gluten-free diet. Overall service is slow and unresponsive. While the manager person talks loudly with patrons at the sushi bar she ignores all others except those who spoke Japanese. We will not be returning.

Excellent sushi!!! Super impressed with all the options we ordered. Only giving 4 stars as the wine/beer options were limited.

Never knew this place existed until recently. The first time I went I placed a to go order: lunch special with three rolls. The second time I sat down for a meal with my family. Very happy with both experiences. The last time I dined in. Its a small place, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. You have the option of sitting at one of the tables or at the sushi bar in the back. Each table is equipped with a button that you can push to call for service, although that wasn't needed because the staff was attentive and very personable. I ordered a seaweed salad, the Dynamite roll and a pot of hot sake. The food was delicious once again and I'll definitely be going back for the next sushi night!

Came for a late lunch, initially place is clean kinda of dark and overall the atmosphere is quiet and quaint. I sat at the sushi bar which appeared clean and in order and there were two sushi chefs. The TV was nice since I was alone and the volume was quiet. Server came quickly and ordered my usual volcano roll, ginger salad, potstickers and my drinks. Salad came very fast and in appearance it was average. The salad was fresh and crisp very light and delightful to my palate. The dressing was great and very flavorful but not over done. Off to a good start! My pot stickers otherwise known As guyuza came fast and appearance was good and the flavor was average, a bit under seasoned imo but a good eat none the less. I have had better in other sushi houses. The potstickers did taste fresh not frozen and they were cooked well. I would order them again. My roll came and the appearance was impressive and a great portion size. When I say great I mean large. I'm a big boy and like to eat hearty meals. The taste WOW a party in my mouth, the volcano roll is topped with warm spicy crab meat and a ton. It says spicy but it is very mild and flavorful. I have had a lot of volcano rolls and this is in my top 5 good stuff. The sauce they drizzle over top was awesome. Every bite left me wanting another this volcano roll was absolutely delightful to place in my stomach. Lin was my server and she was most accommodating and pleasant to talk to very kind and attentive. I would say she is an asset to this business. I will be back and will most definitely order the volcano roll again. If your close stop in you won't be disappointed. Good food and quaint and quiet atmosphere. Ask for Lin

It was really good! We got the crunch munch (really recommend!) tuna and avocado, and the spicy conch. For dessert we had the fried ice cream, a large serving enough for three people for only $5!

I had a blast, Sami and Luis will give you the best sushi experience, they're really nice and friendly! Don't miss this place for one of the best travel to the land of the rising sun! Gamsahabnida!

Absolutely my favorite sushi in Brandon!!! I've been living in Brandon for over a decade and dined at all the sushi restaurants, none of them hold a candle to Maru. They have so many delicious specialty rolls and a combination menu for those of us in a budget. Service is always top notch also!

  • Claudia C.

Rolls were good. Juicy and filling. Portions were good. Salmon sashimi was yummy but could have been better. Place is Nice and clean ! A bit pricey in my opinion, although it was happy hour and rolls were $10 each (compared to $12.99).

I had the assorted fish bim bim bap. It was pretty good except I wish it came with Side dishes. Normally once you order anything Korean , you get side sides but not this one! But It was fresh so I didn't mind. The fish was not bad. We also have a variety of sushi dish. The dynamic was really good. I highly recommend this place . The price is a bit higher but since your paying to quality and the atmosphere, it's not that bad.

Would have never expected this type Of quality and creativity in sushi from this little joint nestled in a strip mall of route 60. I hade the playboy and red dragon rolls and will definitely be back for the same order!

Very good.. I was surprised by the decor inside.. it was very cute and trendy.. The customer service was excellent and the sushi rolls were sooooo Good!! They give you a big menu with Big rolls that cost no less than $11.99.. If you look on the drink menu on the table there are smaller rolls for $5-$7.50. I got the Bagel roll which is basically a philli roll and the Mexican roll with shrimp tempura. Both choices off the smaller menu.. I didn't like the Veggie tempura appitizer very much.. It was less crunchy and more just plain battered and fried.. The oil was still dripping off the veggies at the table.. Over all it was a very nice experience..

Came to Tampa for business and happened to stumble upon this place after yelping for sushi nearby - wasn't disappointed. It's what I believe great sushi! The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is pretty good. Try the Sake Rotika! #amazing

Loved the sake rotiki. Very friendly service. Love that each table has its own bell in case you need service!! If I lived in the area I would be a regular! !

Sushi Maru is the best that you can get here. The prices are average sushi prices but the quality and quantity far makes up for the prices, which, in turn, make the prices very reasonable. They give actual sashimi on the rolls! Huge generous, FRESH, slices! I must admit that I'm a sushi-snob. I refuse to eat sushi from just anywhere, but this place definitely passes the test. But then again, I think only true sushi eaters can truly appreciate what I mean. If you're looking to get a Philadelphia cream cheese roll, then any place can offer that to you. This place has a good variety of rolls- from your crunchy-somethings to your sashimi-topped California rolls. SO yum.

Decided to try this place out for lunch since I was in the area and glad I did. There was an option of a salad or soup to start off with so I went with the salad. It came out chilled with a very tasty home made ginger dressing on it. I ordered the Mexican and spicy white tuna roll and everything was very fresh. Even the rice was nice and fluffy! The server and all the workers were super friendly and made sure everything was ok for me. I'll definitely be going back to try out other rolls!

I came to Sushi Maru with low expectations. Most of the Sushi places in Tampa are very average. And for traditional sushi (quality vs variety) is even more difficult. Here I met Sang Ling. The sushi chef. He assured me he would make sure I would have a great dining experience. And he delivered! I simply order a Sashimi combo, some additional pieces, like sashimi Ika and salmon row and a simple roll. The fish was excellent. The tuna had that buttery texture, fresh very colorful. All the variety was excellent. This is definitely the go to place when in the East side of town.

Loved it! It's hard to find good sushi in Florida (we're visiting from California). I can't say how thrilled we where to find Sushi Maru. This will be our new favorite every time we visit our parents here in Tampa. We ordered a couple of delicious spicy rolls - very nicely done and actually spicy! Fresh delicious fish, nicely done ginger. Also the kimchee soup and seaweed salad, both very good (I highly recommend the kimchee and tofu soup it was excellent). Nice Korean sides and a good sake selection too. Thank you! We are looking forward to coming back.

  • Chris N.

Wanted to like this place, but concerned with how long fish stayed out of the cooler - sitting at the bar it was too obvious. Overly soft fish texture noted. Petit Chirashi - funky taste. The food worries me. The people and decor were very nice. Nevertheless i am unlikely to go back with a nervous first impression.

Food was great! Very good portions of fish in the sushi rolls. We also had the cold udon salad with shrimp and it had excellent flavor with a little spice from the wasabi. We had great service too so I would def recommend giving them a try.

Second time here. Korean with a sushi twist! Nice people, good food. I'm a sushi purist and this is not a Japanese joint. Having said that, the fish is very fresh and presented nicely and the Korean food is outstanding!

I've been to a lot of Sushi restaurants but this place is number one on my list. Their nigiri is delicious and fresh. Our favorite rolls are the Dragon Roll and the Lava Roll. Service is always great too! Recommend this place for date night or a quick lunch.

Awesome sushi!!! Ordered the Super Mexican roll to satisfy my pregnancy craving... WOW I'll be back! They add 2 samples of other cooked rolls... Delish! I'll be back post-pregnancy for the real stuff! Ambiance- great inside! It's in a strip mall, but DO NOT be put off by this.

This was my second time at Sushi Maru, so for what it's worth, they've gotten my repeat business. While the parking had tendency to be a bit nightmarish at times (they're located in the plaza on 60 with Outback and Smoothie King), once you walk in the first thing you notice is the definite improvement on decor from the sushi place that was here before! One thing you may want to keep in mind is that it is nice and cool inside! While this is a great thing in this Florida heat, having a light jacket or cardigan may be necessary for some. The first time I went it was later at night and my party and I all ordered sushi. I remember it being pretty good but I pretty much stuck to the more frou-frou cooked rolls as I was still pregnant at the time. Still, from what I remember it was tasty. My friend's wakame seaweed salad specifically comes to mind as being yummy! However, this time I wanted to try their Korean fare as I've never had Korean food, and while I can not speak for authenticity as some have, I can talk about taste! I ordered their Bul Go Ki lunch special based on my mother's suggestion and I'm glad I did. It was a pretty great introduction to something I've never tried. I will go on the record to say there is a small chance my perception was a tad skewed based on I was starving from having to fast for a doctor's appointment and it was nearing two o'clock at this point :p They started by bringing out my ginger salad which had a bit more of a creamier goner dressing than I'm used to, but while still good, there wasn't much of a ginger flavor to it. Next they brought out a bento box with the rest of the lunch special components. The bul go ki is essentially sliced beef with white onion and scallions in a sweet sauce (the sweetness wasn't too over powering thankfully). The fried rice that accompanied it was very rich and one of my favorite parts of the meal honestly. The steamed veggies that came with it were super fresh and delicious, though undressed. Despite being super heavy on the onion I enjoyed them just the way they were. It also came with two gyoza which were particularly yummy and had great ginger flavor with just the right amount of salt. The outside was super crispy and I was such a fan I may have ate both of mine and my mom's as well. Lastly there was a super crispy spring roll type of deal though I don't remember the actual name from the menu to be honest. What I do remember is it being delicious! The whole meal comes to you with a tiny bit of what seemed like a thin yum yum sauce but honestly nothing needed anything added to it in my opinion and it went mostly unused.. As far as service, I can't complain. Everyone was very friendly and my water glass was never empty for long (I drink A LOT of water so I commend them for keeping up with me). The two meals with a coke and tip came to roughly thirty two dollars or so. A bit more than I'm used to paying for a "lunch special" but I was satisfied with everything so there really is no complaint there either. And I'm sure that I'll be back, probably for more sushi next time!

I'm such a fan of this place. The lunch specials are really great, I love how they give you so many options to choose from. I don't have one negative thing to say about Sushi Maru. The staff is friendly and attentive, the food tastes fresh, the decor is inviting and modern, service is quick and prices are reasonable.

Thanks to Yelp for the enticing food porn, I gave Sushi Maru a try. It was everything my fellow Yelpers said it would be! Fresh, exquisitely crafted, and deliciously concocted. I've been back several times since then, each time better than the last. I've tried almost every roll and love them all. I especially enjoy the $10 maki special and half off Sangria. The owners and staff seem like such nice people. Best sushi experiences I've had since I moved here from New England.

Amazing sushi. Fantastic atmosphere. (considering it is in a stripmall) Good prices. I highly recommend the following rolls: Tampa, Mexican, Playboy, Spicy Tuna Dragon I was also really surprised by the fried cheesecake. I'll definitely get that one again.

Found this restaurant after seeing it's reviews and it was everything they said it would be. The restaurant was nice and clean and the staff was friendly and efficient. That however is secondary to the delicious food. I had the sushi dinner special California roll and the Mexican roll... Outstanding!! They plated the sushi beautifully. The ingredients were so fresh and yummy. We also had the mango mochi and it was refreshing and the perfect ending to this perfect dinner!

Was looking for a place close by to my Nonni's. It was pretty slow when I got there, so the service was fantastically quick. My waiter was friendly and polite, and they have a nifty little button system you can push when you need assistance. I ordered the edamame, crab Rangoon, dragon roll, and the volcano. The edamame was cooked perfectly but a little over salted. The crab Rangoon filling was savory and creamy, and delicious. The plum dipping sauce was pretty subpar however. Maybe a handmade orange sauce of some kind would be better. The volcano was fun to look at, and I loved that the avocado gave it a creamy texture to combat the bite of the spice. The dragon however, I felt had very little flavor. A lot of spice, but not a lot of depth to the combination. Overall, I will definitely visit again on my next vacation.

Okay there is a secret you should know about Sushi Maru. Most people will walk into this joint looking for some acceptable sushi (as I did) only to discover there are a few dishes on the menu that you typically don't see on a Japanese sushi restaurant menu... Its Korean Food! I actually was fortunate enough to discover Korean food at a young age and this is the best available in Brandon, Fl (in my humble opinion). The sushi is fine and I am sure you will enjoy it as I and my dining companions did, but please don't pass up the chance to enjoy Bibimbap, Bulgogi, and of course the delectable Korean side dishes. Service was quick and polite. Also, I enjoyed there Saki flights, of which blueberry was particularly good.

My husband and I went here for the first time last night looking for good sushi by our new house. We didn't feel like driving to downtown where we usually eat sushi and I was a little wary of strip mall sushi. But I was elated to find high quality food and impeccable service. The server continuously throughout our meal gave us tips on what to try and what their best sellers are and she was dead on every time. We tried the st Patrick's roll, volcano, Mexican and tekkyu and all were fresh and well prepared with great flavors going on in there. I can't wait to be a regular and I definitely can't wait to try their tuna nachos next time.

My boyfriend and I used to go to the sushi restaurant that was here before Sushi Maru, so while we were disappointed when that closed, we were more than ecstatic after trying this place! The sushi is so fresh. They really do a good job with every roll I have tried. I love their spicy tuna, the Crazy roll, the Buddha roll. My boyfriend sticks to basics like the Tampa, Mexican, California and they are very good too. The dumpling soup is also phenomenal! Oh how I love a good dumpling! Also, the decor is so cute, really overhauled it to create a beautiful new look. If you're looking for fresh, delicious sushi in a comfortable, chic environment, look no further.

This is one of the better spots I've found in the area after relocating to Brandon Florida. From the outside you wouldn't expect the atmosphere that you get on the inside. It's clean and the people are super nice. Sushi is damn good, why else would I keep coming back??

Great sushi here! Their dragon roll was awesome! I also tried their spicy tuna roll and yellow tail, all were great! They have the brown rice which is a plus! The staff is great and really seemed like a great bunch to work with. A def must try!

This is my husband and I's go to sushi place! Ever since we moved here in Brandon, we satisfy our sushi cravings here Sushi Maru. Our favorites: Mt. Fuji, Crunch Munch, Shrimp and Veggie Tempura, Firedragon. Just by mere naming these dishes makes me wanna head out and head out for some sushi! Hope they give out complimentary hot or cold tea though, just like in Japan. Nonetheless, its all good.

The ambiance begins the culinary journey and continues with the top notch food. The wait staff is a well oiled machine that works together to keep all going smoothly. Everything had great flavor from the spring rolls to the curries. I ventured out and tried the pumpkin curry and won my boyfriend over with it. Will be back to try some other specialties.

My friend has just moved to Brandon. So we yelped sushi restaurants and we weren't disappointed with sushi maru. I lived in San Diego where we've had amazing sushi so my sushi standards are pretty up there Our server was awesome and attentive. We got seaweed salad which you can never go wrong with. We then got the Diablo roll, tres amigos roll, and the red dragon roll. we both agreed the tres amigos came first then the Diablo roll and then the red dragon. All were so good. They definitely don't skimp out on the fish. The tres amigos roll had so much fish, so much flavor, and was very light. The Diablo roll is no joke. I like spicy but don't underestimate Diablo. It has so much flavor and was just so good. The red dragon was very good too but nothing very special about it compares to the other two. The restaurant was clean and modern. The staff was awesome and everything came out relatively quickly. Definitely will be going there again!

Upon walking in, I was shocked by the decor of this place. I used to go to the Japanese restaurant that used to be in its place, Kabuki. It looked absolutely fantastic in there, definitely a 5/5. There's much better use of space and everything looked like it was step higher in class than your typical Japanese restaurant. At each sitting area, they even had the button you push to alert your waiter/waitress to come to your table (which is something convenient that a lot of Korean restaurants have). The waiting staff spoke good English, which was a nice bonus. They were very polite and relatively attentive towards us. The menu gave me a slight surprise. The sushi rolls had the most choices, then the Korean menu, and lastly the Japanese menu. I was a little disappointed to see that they didn't have the typical udon noodles (of any sort) nor teriyaki beef (although there was teriyaki chicken and salmon, I believe). Nonetheless, I am an avid fan of Korean food so I tried their Galbi dinner. Nothing extraordinary really, it was pretty similar to other restaurants...although the sauce seemed a little on the heavy side. The banchan it came with was pretty good, I especially enjoyed the kimchee radish cubes. Along with the Korean dish, I also tried two pieces from two sushi rolls, the Caterpillar Roll and the Sake Rotika roll. The Caterpillar Roll was pretty good, although I found there to be too much eel sauce on it, perhaps I picked one that was sitting in the sauce? The Sake Rotika Roll I surprisingly enjoyed more, even though I don't handle spicy-ness that well, I enjoyed its taste and crunchy texture. Overall, it was a pretty good experience. The atmosphere of the place was excellent and the food was quite tasty, definitely worth a try.

Saw this place on my way to lunch, and decided to try it the same evening. This place rocks. Good service, extremely good sushi. It was a joy to eat here. I ordered three rolls, that was a mistake: wayyyy too much. But so tasty. I can highly recommend this place.

Food pretty good, but WAYYY overpriced. Their happy hour sucks, the first time I went there they only had red wine on special....who does that. For what you pay it's not worth it. Decor is really nice, but I would rather pay less with better quality at a restaurant that isn't as well decorated. You should try crazy cafe, the sushi is ebtter and so are the prices.

Great sushi in Brandon. If you like Matoi Sushi in Tampa, this place is awesome, because the owners are related to the owners of Matoi, so the food quality is similar, but the ambiance is much more new and modern. Staff is friendly and attentive. They have a decent sake list, including both Japanese and Korean sake. They also have a bunch of beer options. The sushi list is largely special rolls. I'm a purist, so I generally go for nigiri, but I tried the wasabi roll, and it was very good. I do wish they had more rolls that did not have mayonnaise as an ingredient. My husband is not a sushi eater, which is why we like Maru and Matoi. He can have Korean food while I get my fish fix. He had the bul go gi, and he cleaned his plate. I stole his kim chee and bean sprouts, and they were awesome. This place is very convenient to the big AMC, so start your dinner and a movie here.

From the outside you would never think the decor could be as nice as it is inside. Overall nice set up, excellent service, delicious sushi, and yummy mochi

Friggin fantastic sushi. Soooo goood!! Went there for the first time and enjoyed a great service and a flavorful experience. This place is a medium size restaurant with a quiet comfortable atmosphere poured over just a smidgen of formal decorum. Did I mention he sushi is the best I have ever had, and I have eaten a lot of Sushi. I definitely recommend this place, and no, I don't own the place, but I wish I did.

I am still sitting in the restaurant as I write this, I can't express enough how good this sushi is. I've been everywhere in Tampa, I've tried so many different sushi restaurants but this one is definitely in a class of its own.... Me and my daughter ordered the volcano, red dragon and crazy. No substitutions, exactly as it is on the menu. The fish is so fresh, everything came out perfect and our server Alicia is incredibly attentive. They have great choices for the little ones as well. My little one just loved their tempura chicken with their amazing sweet and sour sauce! Last but definitely not deserving of any less, their crab Rangoon is the best that I've ever had anywhere. Every bite was delectable, the cream cheese wasn't overpowering and the crab meat was chunky in the best way possible. All in all, if I could give 10 stars they wouldn't be deserving of anything less!!! Food, atmosphere, service.... I absolutely recommend!!!

The Best Sushi I have found so far in the general area. I'm a lover of good fresh Sushi and this place is really tops. Doesn't look like much from the outside, but real nice inside with generous pieces of Nigiri and other rolls etc. it's my favorite!

Been coming here faithfully since early summer, and usually we just get the different types of sushi, but tonight I went for the Korean cuisine. For my first experience with Korean food, I was very pleased, absolutely delicious! I ordered the Tofu Ma Po with medium heat on the spice, received a very generous portion along with a bowl of white rice and four Korean sides (kimchi, radish kimchi, sprout kimchi, and a type of bean, I think they were mung beans), I had never tried Korean food at all, so it was an experience that I will happily remember! I can not neglect to mention their amazing sushi, friendly & attentive staff, over all great atmosphere and a clean & tidy restaurant.

This place was amazing! I had the diablo roll based on a waiters recommendation and it was amazing! Spicy tuna and shrimp tempura wrapped in avocado with spicy tuna! They really pay attention to detail and the food can't be beat! The fish is fresh and I liked their miso soup! I can't wait to come back! A plus for both food and service!:)

Sooo I chose this place based on the good reviews. It's open late and for the Brandon area that's a plus. Well I am definitely not impressed. I pick up my to go order(which was not ready when I arrived) and there is PLASTIC in my food. 2 bites of sushi both wrapped in plastic!! I return to the restaurant, the waitress explains that the chef must've accidentally left it on there when he used it to form the sushi roll. She quickly takes it back, and acts like it's no big deal. She ask the chef to remake it, she did apologize however but didn't offer any discount, no drink while I waited no appetizer, nothing. I'm not going back a 15 minute to go order turns into a 45 minute ordeal. Customer service is key folks.

From the outside this place doesn't look like much but once you walk in side it's really nice. The staff was friendly and seated us right away. I ordered the Bul Go Ki which is a traditional Korean dish and it came with 4 Korean sides. The sides were broccoli, cabbage kimchi, cucumber kimchi, and bean sprouts. Everything was delicious. The flavors were amazing and I ate all the sides and wanted more so I ordered a second round. My mom ordered the salmon teriyaki and raved about the flavors and how everything was done. Since we lived in Korea we were happy that this is the real deal when it comes to Korean food. Sushi Maru is definitely one of my favorite finds and I know I'll be bringing people there to try Korean.

We went here on Saturday and I wish we had tried this place sooner. Finding a parking space can be a little tough in this complex, but not impossible. The decor is nice, Christina our server even nicer. The chefs appeared to be a little less than enthusiastic, but they put out some decent rolls so hopefully that was not the norm. We ordered a Crunch Munch, Crazy, and Spicy Conch Roll which were all pretty tasty. The call buttons are a nice touch and could be really useful when they have a full house. We will be back because it's the best place we have tried in The Bay Area thus far.

Good sushi, I've been there multiple times and have gotten the Tampa roll, spicy tuna roll, st. Patrick's roll, playboy roll, and the red Dragon roll. But my favorite thing about that place is the friend green beans with yum yum sauce :-)

  • David T.

I really wanted to love this place and I've been several times. The service is always excellent and it's a great local story. Unfortunately I find the sushi a bit bland and fairly expensive. I'd happily pay the price for great sushi but I can pay less and get a better meal at many other places in the bay area.

One of the best authentic Japanese sushi place here in Tampa. It's a little pricey BUT it's totally worth it. The service is really good too.

I thought that this place was incredible! We had a large party of 14 people and they were very efficient and accommodating. The wait staff was very friendly and the food was amazing. They have some unique rolls on the menu. Everyone in our party was very pleased and would love to go back!

This is the second time I have been here and will be back again. Sushi prices are very reasonable and the fish is very fresh! The service is great because each table actually had a buzzer if you need service. How often have you been to places where it takes forever to find someone because you just want a refill on water. Haha. Drink wise at the time they also had a two for one special.

This is by far the best sushi I have ever had in the Tampa Bay Area. I ordered the Red Dragon Roll and Crab Rangoons. The Sushi Chef made me a specialty Temaki which was great!!! I'm definitely going here for my sushi cravings from now on!

I am bit of a snob when it comes to looks and this place is beautiful. Everything looked very chic and the sushi was amazing and they have full bar. Service was top notch. Men - definitely a place where you can take your ladies for some wine and dine (chic style)

Went there for lunch the other day to try the Sushi since the first time I was here I had the Korean Bi Bim Bop (delish!). I was surprised by the high prices of the rolls, but still decided to get one and my friend got one as well. We had the Bahama Mama and the Red Dragon. They were HUGE and a delicious blend of tastes! I am definitely coming back...on my splurge for lunch days. Also the service is great and the staff is very friendly (shot out to CeCe!)

Ah-mazing. We tried them a few months ago and weren't super impressed but we decided to give them a second try and WOW! Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu, we went during their ten dollar roll happy hour and tried both sushi and their traditional Korean food. The short ribs were awesome and the sushi was fresh and delish. By far our favorite place in the Brandon area. Will be back for sure. Glad we gave them a second try. The first time was take out sushi and it must have been an off night.

Delicious! Sushi is cut beautifully and the fish is fresh. The kitchen food is authentic and probably the closest to home cooking you can get. Don't think twice about coming here it's well worth it!

Fresh, delicious - beautifully presented dishes. Friendly, customer service oriented staff within a modern yet welcoming atmosphere making it a must whenever we're in town. And to top it off, they phenomenally transform the traditional mochi by dressing it to the nines with whipped cream and hot fudge! Amazeballs.com !!!

  • Wiliam G.

As a chef myself im rather picky. When you think of sushi you probably would not think Brandon florida but think again. This place is a hidden gem. Open relatively late with very reasonable prices. Their serving staff can not be matched, definitely go with Alicia this girl knows how to pair you with your perfect roll as match sake to roll. I love spicy and she recommended either the Red dragon or the st. Patrick. I happened to be rather hungry so I went with both. Simply amazing. The Korean food is to die for.

I love their sushi! The atmosphere is very modern and stylish. I have eaten here a few times and I have not been disappointed. I like the combination sushi choices they have- especially the 3 roll combo. And I absolutely love their ginger salad dressing!!

This is one of only two restaurants in the Brandon area that I would recommend for Sushi. They have some pretty good Korean food as well! Try the meal that they cook and mix in front of you in a bowl. Delicious!

Excellent! Fresh! We had Tuna, salmon, yellowtail, eel and octopus which were all wonderful. The Miami Hurricane roll was delicious! 2 for 1 hot sake was a surprise but was great. We will be back again!

This place should just stick with Korean food rather than Sushi and Korean fusion. The only good thing about the restaurant is that every thing was COLD. My sister and mother were visiting from New York City. I brought them to this restaurant because the first time I was there, the sushi was good (perhaps I got lucky that first time). My mother ordered Bulgogi which was decent. My sister and I started off with a tuna nacho to share, which again was decent. Then every thing went down hill. Let's start with the scallop sashimi: mushy, bland with no taste of fresh scallop, was like eating an over chewed melted piece of gum. The sweet shrimp sashimi was the same: mushy and lacked the sweetness of fresh shrimp, (like the scallop- over chewed, melted piece of gum). Finally came the yellowtail sashimi that turned me away from this restaurant forever. Four pieces of yellowtail sashimi came out with the Wasabi roll. The jalapenos over powered the entire wasabi roll. My sister and I had to wash down the spice with the Bulgogi. The yellowtail sashimi was served with a frozen center. We had to ask our waiter, David, to return it back to the sushi bar. We over heard the sushi chef telling the waiter to bring it back to us. The waiter brought it back to our table and said, "Just let in sit for a bit, so it can defrost and you'll be able to eat it". My sister and I was in shocked that he stated that. We're not clear whether it was the sushi chef that had asked the waiter to state that or was it David's own justification. But that was UNACCEPTABLE. We did not go to the restaurant to order frozen centered sashimi, let it thoroughly thaw at our table, and then eat it. This was like ordering water and the waiter giving us a cup of ice, having to wait for it to melt to drink (which WAS the case because the waiter NEVER once refilled our cups). By the end of this dissatisfying meal, the waiter came over to remove our plates. He DARED to state, "Oh just to let you guys know, and for next time. All sushi restaurants served frozen fish. Our fish comes in frozen. OUR SUSHI CHEFS MELT THE FISH BY SQUEEZING AND HOLDING IT IN THEIR HANDS. The yellowtails went really fast tonight. Therefore we served what we had since you ordered it". First off, my sister and I are sushi connoisseurs. We know the quality and the elegance of Japanese cuisine. NOT all sushi restaurants receive their fish frozen, ESPECIALLY not restaurants of NYC and Las Vegas where they fly in fresh fish from Japan; or where the sushi chefs hand pick their fish from live fish markets every business morning. Second, if the sushi chefs were professionally trained, they would not served sashimi that was not fully thaw through to their customers. That would be a disgrace in Japan. Third, to tell customers that their "SUSHI CHEFS MELT THE FISH BY SQUEEZING AND HOLDING IT IN THEIR HANDS"..... to us that was a BIG RED FLAG FOR FOOD CONTAMINATION. Sushi needs to remain at 40 degrees or cooler to prevent bacterial growth. The human body temperature is around 98 degrees. If the frozen sashimi is "melted" (thaw) by squeezing and holding in the chef's hand, bacterial will begin to grow on the outside before the center is completed thawed. There will definitely NOT be a next, don't worry David.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this place. It has both sushi and Korean food... I tried both and they were both outstanding. Something weird that happened, though, was both of our entrees (sushi roll and Korean bbq dish) came out before our appetizers (seaweed salad and miso soup)... originally, we thought they just forgot about our appetizers but then we got them after our main dishes and by that point I didn't even really want them anymore. We also had a groupon and told them about it ahead of time, and then when it came time to get the bill, they failed to mention some of the specifications of the groupon (couldn't be used on Korean food), which was annoying because we probably would have ordered differently had we known that ahead of time. Overall, the food was outstanding, though, and even with the little mishaps, I'd definitely come back.

I'm a sushi fanatic, and the sushi I had at this place was REALLY GOOD!!! I ordered the Caterpillar Roll and the Red Dragon Roll, and the avocado on the caterpillar roll was perfect, creamy, and delicious. The eel was sweet and savory. The spicy tuna in the red dragon roll was really spicy! Which is great because I LOVE spicy:) Our server Suhngee was super sweet, and they sat us by the Sushi bar which was fun because the sushi chefs were very nice and chatted with us a bit. We will be back for the Korean food!

Went there for dinner tonight while in the Brandon area for work. I was wondering around trying to find something to eat and decided on sushi based on some other reviews. It was pretty dead in there, only 1 other table that was there for a birthday party. Ordered a spicy tuna roll and rainbow roll. The fish was not a "cold" as I prefer for my sushi and probably could have been rolled a little tighter so the pieces didn't feel like they were falling apart as you grabbed each piece. Other than that, the rolls were big and filling. Brian was a great waiter. If I had know they had a "secret" Korean menu I would have ordered off of that instead.

Amazing hidden gem!!! Don't let the humble exterior fool you. The sushi is the best I have had in FL. The Sake Rotika roll and the Crazy roll are must haves! You will not be disappointed. The service is also outstanding! Everyone is extremely polite, bubbly, and attentive. My girlfriend and I stumbled across this place by chance and were blown away with the quality of the sushi. We now make a special 45 minute trip at least once a month just to eat here.

I have to say I normally don't write many reviews, however I have been to this restaurant twice and both times had an excellent experience. The first time I had the lunch special and a tuna roll and the entire meal was fresh and delicious. The second time the wait staff recognized us and treated us as "old friends" remembering our preference of tables, filling our drinks quickly, and checking on us through out our dining experience without being pushy. This is a great new place to go if you like sushi and great service.

Sushi maru is a much-needed sushi place in Brandon. Crazy Café is pleasant, but Sushi maru's portions and taste are great -- more filling sushi. So far I've had the Super Mexican and the Buddha roll. First time, I bought solo. Second time picking up, I had three orders. Who knows, tomorrow maybe the whole company will find out about this place. If you're in Brandon and are craving sushi, go here.

Two co-workers and I ate lunch this week at Sushi Maru in Brandon Lakes Plaza. This was formerly the Kabuki sushi restaurant, but now has new owners. The place has been remodeled, and looks beautiful and clean. The staff is very friendly. Our waiter, David, was super-attentive and helpful. We ordered an appetizer, sushi, and two lunch specials; everything was delicious. Sammy (I think that's his name) is an artist when it comes to sushi presentation! In addition to sushi, they also serve Korean and other Asian dishes. Try Sushi Maru - you won't be disappointed!

The place is artfully decorated and the food delicious, to say the least. The price was average for the area but the service and food is outstanding. They recently opened and are working hard to please their customers and show them how good they are. Highly recommend it!
