Just because you're in the South, doesn't mean the BBQ is good. After a long flight from AZ, we landed at the Tampa airport, got in our rental car, and headed towards our hotel in Sarasota. Since we were in "The South" we had a hankering for BBQ. When we came upon Woody's Bar-B-Q we were pretty excited. Big mistake. The place is a bit of a dive, which wouldn't be a bad thing, if the food and the service was great. But alas, it all sucked. It took forever to get someone to wait on us and when they did, they screwed up our order. When we finally did get our food, it looked pretty decent (see pic) so we were hopeful. However, our meal was lukewarm and tasteless. I thought that BBQ was a big deal in the South. But maybe that doesn't apply to FL? Or at least, it doesn't apply to this place.

Having been in the restaurant business, it takes a lot for me to rate a restaurant as bad, but this one of those rare occasions that our culinary experience was so terrible we didn't even finish our mean before we paid and left. Why? The food tasted like it had been flavored with dishwater detergent and disinfectant. Perhaps it was just something that happened that night, but any eatery that would allow that kind of food to be served will not gain our future patronage.

Good BBQ. Good service. I prefer over most other BBQ chains.

Not the greatest bbq. Small portions. Sonnys is much better. Not planning on going here again.

If you're looking inexpensive quick bbq this is the place. Babyback ribs are fall off the. Bone, and the pulled pork is really good. Even the brisket is really good could use a little more smoke flavor. Prices are very reasonable as far as bbq in bradenton goes. We go here every year we visit. Decor could be updated, and the benches you sit on definitely could be better overall I give it 3.5 out of 5. Great for the price though.

When I first started going to Woody's, maybe 10 years ago, my family was a teensy bit obsessed. The ribs were fall off the bone, tender, absolutely the best I've ever eaten. The sides, usually cole slaw and beans to accompany that were phenomenal. Chicken fingers, fries and honey mustard... holy crap, simple but sooo satisfying. Fast forward to now. The ribs are still pretty good, but not as good as they once were. The honey mustard has remained delicious, but the beans and slaw have significantly lowered in taste. The onion rings nowadays are pretty good too. Instead of immediately heading to this place from the airport like we once did, it has become a "maybe" spot.

The food was just ok, I had the Carolina pulled pork sandwich. I didnt eat any of it, it was very sour and the meat very dry. My husband had the all-u-can-eat spareribs and chicken. The chicken had no flavor, the spareribs were very good but very fatty. The only thing that was really good was the barbq baked beans. The cornbread was ok, more like cake. I dont think we will be going back. There are a lot better places to go for BBQ. Even Sonnys is better. Nancys downtown Sarasota is the best for BBQ.

Went here with wife. Both had baby back ribs. Fall off the bone tender. Sauces on table your run of the mill BBQ sauces. Services was quick and good. Went in just before 5 p m and almost empty. Place does need a make over inside. A cleaner place then that dump on 14 st west called Sonnys.

There is no decent BBQ in Bradenton. With that out of the way, sometimes I eat here to humor my lovely wife, who has a periodic need of BBQ, even where there is no good BBQ to be had. When that need arises, we often end up here. It's a chain restaurant trying to do BBQ. This rarely works out. Woody's is not an exception. It's just... not... good. I've tried many things here -- the "Sloppy Woody" pulled pork sandwich, the brisket, the baby back ribs -- and all are okay at best. Somehow I've talked myself into ordering the baby backs three times, and they've been good once. The other two times, they're a greasy, fatty mess. Even their sweet tea is below average. If you're thinking of trying Woody's, don't. Every time I do, I wish I didn't.

I really enjoyed my smoked turkey salad, and my husband had the Carolina pulled pork, and also loved it. Salad: The ranch tasted house made, and the croutons were like Texas toast nuggets, and the turkey was moist. Greens were crisp. I got a side of corn bread and it was the cake-like kind, which is my favorite. Pulled pork: tender juicy and comes with Texas toast and two sides. Fries were good but the cole slaw was bland. I will be back.

The pulled pork sandwich was very good however that's where it ends. My girlfriend had mashed potato as a side, the worst boxed mashed ever returned it for sweet potato fries much better. She had a pulled chicken sandwich taste was okay but found several bones one quite large. Definitely not worth it.

The best thing about this place is the pulled pork. That the only reason I give it three stars. Great flavor, very good. That's it. Sides aren't very good and the wait staff is slack. We usually just pick up pork to go and do the rest ourselves at home.

We love their ribs & most everything else but their "people " skills are AWFUL! They don't greet you & usually one stands & waits to be seated. No one appears to enjoy their jobs. No smiles, brusque order taking. Very "put out" if you ask a question! The public have many choices of places to eat so work on your skills PLEASE!

We went to Woody's yesterday - on a quiet Wednesday evening - hoping to have some BBQ for dinner before going to a movie down the road. There were 5 of us - and when we walked into the door and there are about 3 signs saying "Please wait to be seated".... There were only a few tables of guests in the place - so did as directed and waited to be seated. 2 Waitresses walked by us - looked at us - DID NOT SAY A WORD - totally ignoring us.. A male staff person was at the 'computer' at the end of the main aisle and glared at us - but did not say a word. We stood there about 5 mins and NOT ONE STAFF PERSON acknowledged us - even though I asked a waitress walking by - "can we be seated? - She simply looked at me - DID NOT reply and walked on. Needless to say - We left. Before we walked out - I walked over to a waitress - cleaning up an empty table less than 10 feet away - and said "it would have been nice for someone to at least acknowledge us - or say - "sorry someone will be with you in a moment - but letting us stand there while staff walked by and ignored us is not acceptable..." to which she just looked at me and shrugged. Guest they don't need guests or tips there... We went down the road an little farther to Appleby's had wonderful service and good food... and didn't let the bad service at Woodys ruin our fun evening.

Eating in a place like this is more than just about the food. Sometimes how a place looks is almost as important. The service and food were both adequate. Neither was great. Since we arrived when almost no one was there the service was prompt. By the time it came to pay our check we couldn't even get her to come and get our check! The food was OK - I had the "Carolina Pulled Pork" but it wasn't all the Carolina like. It tasted good, but it wasn't like the picture in the menu. My first piece of toast was 1/4" thick and dry and hard - not toasty hard, stale hard. Our waitress did bring me a fresh piece eventually, but why mine was hard and my wife's good is beyond me. My wife had the Baby Back Ribs and they were pretty gooey and messy on the bottom, but they were, indeed, fall of the bone good. As for the looks of the place. It really is getting to look tired and worn. The benches, tables, walls are all getting pretty bad. And it was dark - and we were by the window! It isn't the dark that you expect in an intimate restaurant setting. It was the dingy kind of dark. They really need to spruce the place up a bit!!

I don't know why this place gets bad reviews, but my experience was pretty good!! We got baby back ribs and it was delicious! It could of been a little bit larger though.. Side dishes were good as well and banana pudding was just awesome!!

OK, I generally don't write reviews unless the locations is good. But, I can't give this place a pass. While in the area, we stopped in Woody's because we had a great experience at the Woody's in Palatka, Fl....but this location was a Big Disappointment. The only thing going for this location was our waiter Dennis. The food quality & portions were barely fair at most. the iced tea was weak. The place was filthy w/a odor to match. the mens room was "disgusting". As we walked towards the place I noticed the debris between the large plate glass windows and the benches...I mean really clean up the visuals! Tiles falling off, run down and just not well kept. Being in the sanitation field I have to wonder how in the hell this place passes any Health Inspections. Stay out of this place!

It seems like there are only two types of food that I eat these days, Asian or Southern Style Barbeque. It's just interesting! I often visit this Woody's location since they are close to my work and can get me in and out of there in less than an hour. To be honest, I do not go there for their barbeque meats, which are alright. I go there for three reasons: Their thin version of crinkle cut fries ($1.50 a basket), always crispy and wonderful. Garlic bread ($1.25 for two pieces) that is lightly buttered, crispy, yet not tough. And the third being their amazing vinegar mustard barbeque sauce. I cover the bread with the vinegar mustard sauce and their original sauce mixed together. Pork is my favorite meat, so I have tried their pulled and sliced pork, it is alright. Note that when ordering chicken there it takes up to 45 minutes for them to cook it for you. My favorite meat item is their Sloppy Woody Sandwich ($6.95) which is tender slow cooked shredded pork mixed with sauce on a garlic butter toasted sesame seed bun. It comes with fries. Now only if I could just have fries, sauce, and bread from Woody's and sliced pork and beans from Sonny's together. It would be the perfect barbeque meal.

Week 4: Does A Bear Poop In The Woods An excerpt from the "Meatball Chronicles." sundaymeatballchronicles… Today started unlike any other Sunday. We woke up in the woods, stiff from the hard ground and foggy as to how we ended up there. Surrounding us was a mess of filthy clothes, bed linens, a flat lizard with a bit of guts hanging out (Ryan must have accidently slept on him), a bottle of ibuprofen, empty water bottles and most importantly--each other's puzzled faces. We knew how we ended up there--we hiked 9 miles through the Myakka River State Park because the "wilderness" was calling. Having pooped in the woods and with a 9 mile "return to civilization" hike on the agenda before noon, I knew whatever the day would hold would be better than the present. We packed up "camp" and with half of a water bottle left, we trekked 9 miles back to the car. We weren't starving, but we were definitely in the mood for real food after eating an entire 8-pack of fire charred hot dogs in the past 24 hours. Our early morning appetizers were ibuprofen, leftover smores, an apple and an orange. Believe it or not, without the weight of food on the way home, we made it back in just over 3 hours! Ahhhh, finally, cell phone service, a car, and a sweaty hug--WE MADE IT! WHERE DO WE GO!?!? According to Google, the closest restaurant is 15 miles away in Myakka City. Suzie Q's, here we come. We passed numerous farms with hundreds of cows on the way there. Dairy Cows, Bulls, Baby Cows... "Oh the babies are so cute, I want to get out and hug one." This may have been the most erroneous and false statement I've ever made. In actuality I was imagining myself or Ryan grabbing the knife from the trunk and slaying our own delicious steak. We arrived at Suzie Q's only to realize that it was closed. We weren't thinking straight. Had we taken one minute to think about where we were, we would have known nothing would be open on a Sunday. People are busy praying. And now I'm praying, for real food within the next 15 miles. Bingo. There is an open "Woody's BBQ" within 10 miles and at this point we are speeding. I can't even look at the cows anymore because between my growling stomach and lack of love for animals, all I can see is meat. We did finally make it though. Woody's is in a small strip mall and the only other thing I remember seeing is a gas station (because on the way home we purchased Flamingo Bingo lottery tickets). We attempted running in but our legs were too sore from the hike. Picnic tables everywhere and ugly wait staff. I like it already. Our waiter has a fohawk and girl's earrings. He is covered in stars from his wrist all the way up his arm and probably to his shoulder except I don't want to imagine him without his shirt on. In no way, shape, or form did his stars resemble the comfort of a beautiful night sky. My mind begins to wander--how well does his unique look go over in a small town like this--is he accepted here? Do his customers tip him well? Ryan goes to the bathroom, leaving me alone with nothing to look at but the table in front of me. I try not to stare but I can't help it. A woman is with two teenage boys and I'm not sure if they are all siblings or she is the mother. She is on her phone talking to "Ma" and trying to explain to her that she "knows better than to open those dang internet ads. It must be one of them computer viruses" ... Thank God Ryan is back, we can order and I can stop staring in disbelief. Oh wait, a man has just walked in with a gold money-sign belt and a fat white woman. Ryan literally laughs aloud but I let it go--I'm hungry and luckily I've missed the opportunity to see the belt buckle. Otherwise my strident comments might have been heard. We ordered the WORKS. Fried Squash, Fried Okra, Pulled Pork, Chili Cheese Fries, Regular Fries, Bread, Coleslaw, and approximately 8 rounds of water. Ryan ordered a beer and just the sight of it almost made me faint. So thirsty. While we were waiting for the food to come out, Ryan passed a note across the table asking if a bear poops in the woods. Well Ryan I'd assume so seeing as even I did just 4 hours ago. Intrigued by "Woody's Crayons" and the romantic napkin note, I replied, "yes"... along with a squirt of bbq sauce because there were no brown crayons. We couldn't be more pleased with the meal (i stress the meal, not condiments). Everything was absolutely delicious--especially the fried squash which I had never tried before. Our server was extremely nice; I managed to look beyond his starry canvas and into the depth of his irreplaceable talent--refilling water. Their BBQ sauce could use some work--none of the flavors were fantastic. It really didn't matter though; the food itself was very tasty. I would love to go back someday but I don't think it's going to happen. I can't see us venturing through these woods again. But, should we ever have to, I think we'll stop at Woody's!
