Went to Sonny's last night it was the first time in a long while. I first noticed that there was a new Manager and I really hoped the food would be better than last time. I tried the Brisket and it was outstanding! I spoke to the manager and asked her why it was so much better and she responded that she had been to Pit Master class and the owner had taken the local Pit Masters to BBQ competitions to hone their skills. By the number of Trophies it appears it's working The service here is always wonderful and not the food matches. I will be a regular no question.

Went in about 2 months ago just to see if the corporate lackeys did anything about this dump. Didn't think it could get worse but it did. Order the sliced pork dinner. All hot foods came out cold. When waitress came to check told her everything was ice cold. She replaced the whole order and se problem. Manager came out and he sent it back and microwaved it. This place has no quality control and the staff don't seem to have a clue. As far as corporate staff contacting me thru yelp they don't do anything to straighten this place up. This is the only Sonny's on my do not eat list. And as far as anyone from Sonny's contacting me please don't as you don't do anything.

I just love this place. Food was amazing. My family and I just love it all. My son always want to go eat there. He has many different food allergies and they work with you on finding the right meal or will cook something to meet those needs. The service is different because it is like being in a small town where everyone knows you. It felt like a good family restaurant. The manger even changed the TV for my son who was the only one watching it. I will keep coming back here for sure.

Sat down right away and waiter over 10 minutes and no service. To top it off they weren't even busy. Servers walked right past us and didn't even ask us of we have been help. Poor management!!!!

Ok my wife and I tried sonny's again after not eating there in a really long time. Well it will be even longer before we will ever go back again. My wife ordered the chopped beef brisket dinner with broccoli and sweet potato. The broccoli was cold and under cooked. The sweet potato had so much cinnamon in the butter it was over whelming. The chopped brisket was nothing but chopped burnt ends of the brisket, was not eatable. I ordered the sonny's sampler, the sliced pork was extremely fatty and the chicken was dry, but over all the rest of the meat was good.

If you are craving good BBQ then skip eating here. I went yesterday and the staff had that 'I hate my job' attitude. The service was quick but the food is awful.

Went out with some friends. We tried a little bit of everything and it was all awesome. I recommend their bottomless sweet tea, the onion rings, the redneck egg rolls (OMG), the mac and cheese, their pork, and the super amazing cornbread. We will be back.

If you like a quick nothing special barbecue then this is the place for you. The wait staff is wonderful and quick but this isn't what I call good food. Okay food would sum it up.

Pulled pork was very very tender and the special of the day happened to be "all you can eat pork". The server had to eventually ask if I was eating all of that and yes I literally ate like a pig lol. Giving only 3 rating because friends got brisket and it was very dry and the place was very untidy. This would be a good place for take out.

Sonny's on 14th street has had a tough go - and while the service and food here is better than it was, it is still almost empty most of the time. Mike, the manager, has done some good things, but let's face it, Sonny's is really chain BBQ and you can't escape that. This lunch was sliced pork for me. Quite frankly it was one of the most tender and moist sliced pork I've ever had at this Sonny's! My wife had the salad bar and enjoyed all of it. Our friend that we met for lunch had the pulled pork and her's was good, as well. I really think Mike has turned the corner here - even having entertainment on some weekend nights and on Mother's day. Now, he needs to fill the place up some!

Personally, I'm not a fan of Sonny's. It may be just this location, but the food is just not that great. The service isn't that great at this location, and the ambiance isn't great. They act like they just do not care. I've been twice to this location and was unimpressed both times. There are plenty of non-chain BBQ places in the Bradenton area that are cheaper, have better service and better food than this place.

We walked in and it was almost empty. Maybe 3 tables of diners. We ordered our food and waited way over 30 minutes for our food to arrive. Guests that came in after us were served before us and they were almost done with their food before we even got ours. We thought the waitress was hiding from us because we never saw her. It sounded like they were having a party in the back. We asked her where our food was. "Oh, you mean it's not here yet?" (That actually came out of her mouth). She went to check on our food and we lost her again. When she finally brought it out, my baked potato was missing from my plate. She went back to get it. She came back with a sweet potato and said they were out of baked potatoes. I don't like sweet potatoes so she took it back. So we began to eat our meal and I see the restaurant manager walk out with a plate of food. He sat down in the bar area and began eating. I walked over to see what he was eating. Yup! There was a baked potato on his plate! My baked potato! He asked me if I was looking for someone. I just kept looking at that big, hot, fresh, baked potato. I said NO, I'm not looking for anyone and went and sat back down. My husband told me to calm down. We called over the waitress and asked her why the manager was eating a baked potato when there WEREN'T ANY baked potatoes! She didn't know what to say. Just stared at us..... and then said she would go talk to the manager and see what was going on. The manager NEVER came over and said anything to us. My husband said his chicken was good as he laughed at me. My meal started with very rubbery broccoli so I just stopped eating. I asked twice for water and she never brought it. I tried to save this review without any stars but Yelp won't let you. The waitress said our meal was comped. Wasn't that sweet of them?

This location looks tired and the overall layout is off. The decor (?) and lighting need a HGTV intervention ASAP. Although the ambiance was nil, the food was a wee bit better than adequate. I had the pulled pork sandwich on garlic toast with a side of baked beans. The sweet tea was the best I had in a long time.

I am from Central Texas and kind of picky about bbq but I went in with an open mind. When my brisket came out I decided to try it with no sauce first just to see what the taste was. NOTHING! It had NO taste, not good, not bad, just zero. The Ore Ida crinkle cut fries were just as expected, just like I used to make when I was 12 and had to make my own dinner. The sauces were good but loaded with sugar. Two hours after eating it now and I am still feeling kind of ill. Do yourself a favor and stay away.

When we arrived we used the doors on the left side. There was an employee laying curled up fetal position sleeping on a bench next to the door. Other than this unconventional welcome. The food and service was good. My rating is affected by how dirty this place is. The entryway doors are just nasty dirty. The interior is mostly wood but you can tell it's never been cleaned. Seems this place is lacking a good manager.

I really have trouble considering Sonny's a BBQ chain because I am from Gainesville, FL and have eaten at the original Sonny's since I was four years old. Keep in mind that I have been eating here since I was a child, so I can pick apart their menu and every item. There are some new items added in 2003 like the cornbread and mac and cheese, but the classics are where it is at. And, please don't eat the green beans, only fools that don't know any better do that. However, I am reviewing this new location because it is the best location I have been to yet. Yes, even better than the original because it is totally updated. This Sonny's took almost three years to build, and just opened after much anticipation last year. They have a full liquor bar, different décor, and don't play those 1980's country tunes anymore. I consider myself a pork connoisseur, especially with any kind of BBQ pork. And, this location does the sliced pork the best. It is so tender that you can cut through a 3 inch pile of it with your fork. The pulled pork is something that they have added in the past 5 years, and it tastes like shredded pork with water dumped on it. The single ribs are much better than the baby backs in pure meat flavor and fat content. Never have recommended the chicken, and the beef is dry. This is a place that I only come to for sliced pork or pork ribs. You can order the Pork 3 Way if you are feeling festive. Stick with the original sauce, which is now referred to as "Mild." It is a cross between mustard and a sweet sauce, which are two things that I normally mix. So Sonny's already does it for me, and I have not found a sauce like it anywhere else. Don't eat too much of the sauce or you may regret it, I live close so it is not a problem. As far as sides go: - BBQ baked beans have to be my favorite and have always remained consistent. - Coleslaw is sweet and is great to add some roughage in there with all of the fatty meat you are eating. - Fried Okra with cornmeal batter, and they give you little toothpicks to eat it with. This is my new favorite side; I think it is $0.99 more than the other sides. - Crinkle Cut Fries are very thick and crispy, don't eat too many or you will never make it to the meat. They usually hide the meat under the fries, so you are tempted to eat them first. - Garlic Bread, two pieces come with most dinners. The bread used to be softer, because it was made to order. But, now the bread is tougher and hard to bite through because I think it is more pre-fab now. Like the Texas Toast you buy from the grocery store that is frozen in a loaf and each slice is buttered on both sides, that is the current theory. Good for sandwiches and softens up with you cover it in sauce. - Salad Bar believe it or not is actually pretty good, but is unpredictable depending on the train of people that mobbed it before you. I come here for the meat, and the salad bar is pretty much filler. My husband loves the sweet potato with butter. But, to be honest, all of the other sides are not very good since most of them are the new items that have been added (taste canned). The mac and cheese tastes like it is from a can and that is tragic. You have to get the Sweet Tea, ask for it with a slice of lemon to cut the sweetness. They have their own formula for the stuff and it tastes superb. I can go on about sweet tea, but this tea tastes pure, does not have a smokey or cigarette taste (McDonalds Cigarette tea). If you are worried about it being too sweet, they make a custom mixed Half and Half tea, half sweet and half unsweet for all you lamers out there. The glass is usually so big around that I have been known to drop it if I do not drink with both hands. The prices have not gone up much over the years. So you can expect to take a date there and leave feeling full and in a great mood for only $20.00.

Happy Valentines Day to me I get to have diner at Sonny's. I have been to Sonny's before and like their menu options for a chain BBQ place. I ordered the Valentine's Day special a full rack of ribs two sides and a corn muffin for 10.99. What a treat! The meal came out fast I was not all to fond of their soggy mac and cheese. But it was hot and the food was great.

Sonny's is Sonny's. Reliable, surprisingly fast service, predictable barbeque. If you've never been to one, expect a solid range of formulaic barbeque that has been honed to appeal to the public. You know its good because you seldom see scrawny people eating there.

  • Brett B.

When in comes to chain store BBQ, Sonny's does it very well. Their ribs the firm type, not the fall off the bone type so order them only if you like a firm rib, but they are so much leaner that way so you're not eating as much fat. If you go during the week you must ask for Tracy's section for she is the best, hands down. They're pulled pork and chicken is also very good. If you want to eat semi-healthy, do what we do and get brocoli and green beans as your sides instead of that very tasty mac & cheese, otherwise get the mac & cheese along with their fries. If you like tuna salad, get their salad bar. Their tuna salad is better than the tuna salad I've bought at ANY deli counter here locally so far. Enjoy, we at work do this routine once a week for the last 4-5 years and are passionate about what hits our taste buds.

Nice little place. Very good St Louis style ribs. Baby backs were a bit overdone. The all you can eat is a decent price way to get a nice rack o ribs for not a lot of money. Out of the way of tourist spots.

This place has gone downhill since the first time we ate there 3 years ago. We will NEVER go back. Ribs were terrible and tough.
