We have been coming here for years and enjoy the rustic atmosphere and waterfront entertainment. It is a good ole Southern Eating Place on the river. If you wanted OutBack or something similar this is NOT the place for you. The food is great, the view is really neat because you never know who will be zooming by or "parking" their yachts or motorboats or houseboats to come and get a bite to eat! We have celebrated Birthdays and many many Holidays here. Have always had great service with a smile and the owner greets us 99% of the times we have come. Very comfortable laid back restaurant with a cute little salad bar that is really good! We WILL be returning this Sunday as a matter of fact. And, they DO take reservations and DO try to seat you where you request, regardless of the size of your party. Enjoy!!!!

What a great place to eat and enjoy the view. Prices are very reasonable for a full dining place. We ordered a Bloody Mary and Margarita from the bar and they were awesome. I ordered grilled Quail and it was delicious. My son and his soon to be wife ordered a meal for 2 (steak and sided) and they still had enough left over.

The salad bar is good but the trigger fish Cajun style was too spicy. French fries crunchy and a bit greasy.

This place has a great view and the food has always been very good! I have had many dinners here and it's a great place to get out and relax.

Really enjoyed the meal and salad bar. We usually sit on the deck outside and watch the the activities on the river. Always a pleasant time. This Saturday we tried the lower dining and we were looked after well. The salad bar was unique and well put together. Our prime rib was as good as one could expect. French Onion soup was great along with our french fries. Not really sure why anyone would consider less than a 3 star. Likely find something wrong most of the time.

Very disappointed. $ 6.99 lunch special was not special at all. We were told the fish and chips was Grouper. NOT. it was a whitefish I will give them that but I know Grouper and it wasn't Grouper. View is awesome but i wish the food was better. Service was "good". at best $ 12.00 buckets of beer on Saturday. Should be everyday.

We have enjoyed the Blackwater Inn since the late 1970's. Today the Saint Johns River still flows north and the owners of Blackwater Inn provide the BEST in service by those who want you to enjoy fine dining as manatee swim past and the expectation of a riverboat whistle still remains. Just GREAT!

I have been wondering about this place for awhile and when we were in the area decided to give it a try. My wife and and I were both disappointed. The service was fine and they were quite busy on a Sunday afternoon. The decor is old and tired. The food was about the same. I had the Cracker Platter to share with my wife and also the clam chowder. She was not very hungry and had a side of cole slaw and French onion soup. Both soups tasted canned and the rest was just so - so. Would go somewhere else next time.

Location...great! Food & Service...horrible! I ordered dozen shrimp scampi style with baked potato. Shrimp had good flavor. Potato undercooked. Husband had a steak with fries. Steak was flavorless and fries disgusting. Ordered my kid a corn dog. Came out frozen on the inside!!! Had to reorder his dinner. Took 10mins for his food to come out for the second time. By then he already ate half of our food so was no longer hungry. My sweet tea stayed empty most of the night, which is a huge pet peeve of mine! Went to check out and they charged us for our frozen corn dog meal!!!! Will never eat there again!

Went here for my father's birthday this year and it was not a disappointing experience. I ordered gator tail (delicious, the seasonings really set it off) and the house special fish (Trigger fish - never heard of it before but would definitely order again if it were available). My meal included the salad bar which has many options to choose from, and steamed veggies (always trying to eat healthy, especially when eating out!). Both of my parents enjoyed their meals as well (prime rib, I believe). Our waitress was very attentive and enthusiastic throughout the entire evening. We especially enjoyed being seated near the windows that overlook the river. There was musical entertainment that night (a couple that play keyboard and sax - not our kind of music but still enjoyable and very talented!). Overall it was a fantastic event and would definitely go again someday :)

I ordered the broiled oysters, scallops and talapia. Not all that great. I had never had the oysters, so I can't compare them to anything. The service (manager and waitress) was excellent. The atmosphere was good. The restaurant sits on the St. John's river. While we at our gator bites appetizer we watch a gator swimming in the river.

I had dinner with a friend here after going to Juniper Springs for the day in the Ocala National Forest. For the first time, I (we) had to wait over thirty minutes to get a table, but the wait was certainly worth it. The emphasis here is on seafood, as the restaurant is on the St. John's River, however they also serve prime rib, quail and other hallmarks of traditional American dining in the twentieth century. In fact, the restaurant has a very mid-twentieth century feel--like something from a television show from the 1960s perhaps. That is fully meant in an endearing way, and while most of the patrons are in the golden years (as are some of the waitstaff), the quality of the food and old-fashioned Florida charm of the Blackwater Inn have won it many fans, including myself. It is casual and not innovative, not "new" cooking nor showy or trendy, but the quality of the food more than speaks for itself. Tonight I had the triggerfish--a special they don't always have in stock but which is well worth getting when they do--fixed broiled with lemon-pepper and it was amazing. The rice served with it was also perfectly-cooked but almost as amazing as the triggerfish was the smoked fish dip I ordered: it was possibly the best fish dip I've ever had, with more of a lemon flavor to it than most, but the overall effect was exactly as it should have been. My friend Justin was very pleased with his shrimp scampi, too. Perhaps old-fashioned to a degree, but they do what they do better than anyone else and they've been doing it for years. Certainly worthwhile if in the area.

This place could be so much better than it is. The location is amazing and if they would just step it up a bit with the food it would be the total package. I had high hopes when we sat down to real butter on the table. I had the prime rib-tasteless, baked potato-undercooked and "loaded" was a tub of sour cream, a sprinkle of cheese and bac-o's from the salad bar. The roll served with dinner wasn't even heated up. I was very disappointed due to the good reviews from Yelp. I would not reccomend this place to anyone and called my friend in Astor to warn her too.

Their shrimp, whether lemon pepper, Cajun, broiled or fried is the best within 75 miles. Salad bar is awesome. Ask for Cindy - she is very friendly & attentive. We are MN snowbird's staying in The Villages & come here nearly once a week. You won't be disappointed!

I was coming home from a men's conference in ormond beach heading to Clermont and needed a place to eat. We saw the Blackwater Inn on the list and decided to check it out. We actually ate at Williams landing on the upper floor. The food was very good, typical bar fare. My burger was cooked correctly and was very juicy and fresh. The service was good, our waitress seemed a little distracted but it was no big deal to us. If I found myself in Astor again, I would eat here for sure. I would recommend it to anyone traveling along fl-hwy 40 or the St. John's river. Good food and nice atmosphere right on the river.

The food here is discusting! My family and I ordered a hamburger and it was soaked in grease. Sad this is the only restaurant around. The community needs to boot this place out and get a decent family restaurant in place.

Had lunch here on a Friday and chose to sit in the outdoor patio area upstairs so I could take pictures of boats going by on the river. The waitress was efficient and friendly and the food was good for the price. The lunch menu had your typical bar food along with a few fish entrees. I tried the grouper caeser salad and it was delicious.

My family and I eat here at least twice annually, and have yet to be disappointed. It's a charming little place on the St. John's, and the menu has enough variety to satisfy the pickiest of eaters. They are modest in price, and give plenty of food in their portions. The seafood is fresh, and they serve a nice variety. We always make a reservation, but I don't believe you'd have to. They are friendly kids, and for those who want more of a bar atmosphere, there is a second level for that.

My mate and I visited Blackwater Inn for the first time. We received outstanding service and enjoyed a wonderful time outside on the patio. Couldn't help but peek at all the beautiful platters being delivered tableside - Good God they were wonderful! After chatting up with some of the regulars they confirmed to us that great food and service is a staple that everyone can count on at the Inn. Now isn't that grand to hear..."you can count on them." How many restaurants can lay claim to that one? It gives me great pleasure to rate this establishment well. It is so entirely deserved!

Wonderful place to relax on the St. John's River! Awesome Salad Bar!! Great Food, reasonably priced. Great Service! Happy Hour on Friday from 5 to 8pm up stairs on the deck. I drove over an hour to just go hang out for a while. I'm going back too.

We had dinner there today and as usual it was excellent! If you enjoy casual dining, beautiful views of the St Johns River from your table, fresh seafood and good service then you should plan a visit to Blackwater Inn. We had the "Catch of the day" which was trigger fish. We were served two nice filets (8 oz) which we had prepared "grilled lemon pepper" and it was delicious! Baked potatoes were steaming hot and the salad bar is well stocked and fresh. The coffee was good (not 'Starbucks good' but still good). We had a nice strawberry cheesecake for desert. Prices are very reasonable as our bill including dinners, beverages and desert for 2 was $43.00

This is one of those restaurants that gets by on location. I had high hopes reading all of the customer reviews tacked on the wall, but it went downhill rather quickly. It took a fairly long time for a hostess to acknowledge us and then another 10 minutes to be seated. During that time we sat at the sofas next to a weird shrine to Florida taxidermy. Dusty stuffed fish, bobcat, raccoon and turkey shared space with a tabletop pond of living koi and a forest of plastic ferns. The table was right in front of a large window, where we had a front row view of the St. John's river. A basket of packaged crackers, bread sticks and foil wrapped butter was in place. The bread sticks were past their prime. The menu had a good offering of fish, salads and chicken and steak. I was glad to see they had a selection of "petite plated" for smaller appetites, which was a relief because the portions that I was seeing on other tables border lined on obscenely large. My scallops came as ordered, the baked potato was a bit small and came with...packaged sour cream on the side. My children were happy with grilled cheese and fries. After ordering I hear another waitress telling her table about the specials. Had I been told about them, I might have ordered the trigger fish. The restaurant's vibe was a big distraction for me. The dirty stuffed animals, the drop tile ceiling, heavily shellacked tables and 70 year old waitresses in black pleated shorts was a bit much. Then add in all of the roadside souvenir shack knick-knackery all accented with a touch of faded out teal. The bathroom was authentic to something that one would find next to the river. The vents were coated in dust and the sinks actually had green and brown fauna growing all around the faucets. The bowls were nasty too. It was beyond gross. I have been in nicer gas station bathrooms. Overall, the food was serviceable but the atmosphere was dated, the service was very slow and bathrooms were horrid. I would not go back.
