Horace Shellhammer’s Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

Happened in while having a rain day from flight instruction and on orders to go grocery shopping. Great selection of beers and food. The bartender was very knowledgeable. Think I finally found a handout since moving herd from Texas. All they need is Shiner Bock.

I've lived around the corner from Shellhammer's for 8 years. Despite their coupon for free food that came in my welcome basket back in '05, I had never ventured in. A friend and I finally checked it out this past weekend - we were looking for somewhere to have dinner that was off the radar of St Patty's day revelers. This place is surprisingly classy and inviting inside - as others have said here it's far from a typical strip mall bar and grill. I had their Band B burger and fries. As bar food goes it was decent (except that the burger bun was REALLY salty, as were the room-temp-on-arrival seasoned fries). But the upscale-ish decor of this place makes you expect the food to be just a bit better prepared than it was - maybe it's just me. My friend had a Captain and Coke, which he didn't comment on so I guess it was well made. I didn't drink. Overall, I would return, but a warning is definitely in order for those watching their sodium intake.

Great selection of drinks and food. This is a place where I would come and get something different every time I come because everything is always great. The service is always very fast. I love their specials. They have everyday specials and different specials each day of the week. Half-priced bottles of wine, half-prices fajitas, drink specials, etc etc. Pub atmosphere but nice enough to go with friends and family and have a good time.

This was my first time dining here and everything from the time I stepped in the door to me leaving gave me hints I should leave. There was no hostess at the door to seat me. RED FLAG! So after standing for 5 minutes I walked over to the bar to make a to go order. I order the Greek Salmon Salad with (NOTE) the dressing on the side. While waiting for my order a customer saw something in his food that should not have been there and returned it to the kitchen. RED FLAG! I waited incredibly long for a simple salad. About 30 minutes later out comes my $13 order. With my appetite ready, as I opened this sorry excuse for a salad the first thing I notices was that it was DRENCHED in dressing (not on the side). And the salmon was over seasoned and clearly frozen fish not fresh. I paid $13 for bagged salad topped with canned ingredients and a frozen piece of fish. There was no crisp in the lettuce! RED FLAG,RED FLAG,RED FLAG! I've had better salads at Wendy's. And that's exactly what I did. I drove to Wendy's and enjoyed there salad for half the price. I don't know if the chef took off that day. But it was horrible and a salad is not that difficult. If you can't get that right, I most definitely won't be back. Thanks!... for nothing!

The waitress was pretty. Great beer selection. Prompt service. Food is above average quality but not as well prepared. Way better than the surrounding chain alternatives. Probably a full 4 stars here in suburbia, but not in the real world.

A friend found this place on Yelp as a spot to meet on my drive back to DC from NJ. The location was incredibly convenient to hop in and off the highway. The place was relatively full and lively. We sat at a table at first but after no attention, moved to the bar. Service at the bar was great. We decided to split the quesadilla. They split it in the back which was really nice. It was tasty and the tortilla cooked perfectly- crunchy and not greasy. Each "half" was two large pieces. Each half portion could easily have been a meal.

Based on Yelp! Reviews we ordered take out to eat at our hotel. We were just passing through and staying nearby. We ordered Greek Salmon Salad and the Spinach Salad with Chicken. Salmon was overcooked but well seasoned. Both salads pretty small- but maybe because it was take out? Wouldn't say to avoid the place. Seemed nice inside and food was. Pretty good.

Fantastic burgers, huge basket of nachos, I think wednesdays were great specials, pretty good hapy hour. Good priced wine and beer. bathrooms could be cleaner. servers were nice friendly, food came out at a decent time. Just really really liked the food here. Hell ive eaten and drank at this place at least 15 times. Plenty of space to park outside. Its in a shopping center. I enjoyed this place a lot. I love that one bartender with the tats/sleeves. wow. yea anyways fucking great place, not sure why some dip shit gave this a one star review. If theres no one there to seat you, go ask dont stand around like a dumb ass. be proactive.fuck. go up to bar or something. Most of the food was priced fairly well from what I remember. I hope I can go there again one day to eat, and drink. Great menu had suck a great selection. I highly reccomed this place for anybody, looking for good food. I forgot the times for drink specials but they do have them call and ask. Oh I base my reviews off of nation wide establisments that sell food and alcohol, that I have personally been to and have eaten there more than once except for a few that fucking sucked ass. that is all.

Pretty slow service. Not many people here and they are taking forever to take our order. Wow I have no idea how this place has four stars. I've never left a bar faster then leaving this place. The service was horrible and the waitress had an attitude. Never again will I go to this hole in the wall.

Having always heard good things about Shellhammer's, I finally got a chance to go there with some coworkers for their famous half price burger Wednesdays. It was surprisingly empty when we arrived for lunch, but it filled up pretty quickly. (Wednesdays are kind of a big deal.) Our waitress came right over to greet us, let us know about the specials, and take our drink orders. Shortly after that, we placed our orders. I decided to go with the California Turkey Burger, though all of the burgers on the menu looked delicious. Within 10 minutes, our orders were out. My order was less of a burger and more of a sandwich with a turkey patty on it - and that's not even a complaint, only an observation. Nevertheless, the "burger" was delicious - the turkey was cooked perfectly and still moist, the creamy garlic & artichoke cheese spread was super tasty, and the toppings were fresh. The seasoned fries were also pretty good - cripsy and hot. After we finished our meals, the check came out quickly. You can tell that they're trying to get people in and out, but I didn't feel rushed at all. The food was good, the service was excellent, and the price was right. I'd definitely come back to check out their regular menu on another day (and have vowed to keep going back until I've tried all the burgers). Good stuff, Shellhammers!

We just stopped in for the first time tonight. We're not from the area and heard we should try shellhammers. We came in and had a great time. What a cool place! Our server Juliana was really great. My company sends reps to the area all the time and I will spread the word.

Not a bad place to grab a bite or a drink. Not a ton of variety for vegetarians. Gets crowded on weekend nights as you would expect, so be prepared to stand until a table or spot at the bar is open.

Love this place but the last time I was here I was completely ignored while sitting at the bar. Placed an order for cod fries which were never delivered....but were included on my bill. Guys.....I love this place but WTF?

Wow! What a great find! I saw it coming into town and thought, a strip mall bar..yum....not. However, after searching yelp and seeing the reviews, we decided to give it a try. Soooo glad we did! Great atmosphere! Not your typical bar food. We decided it would be a good night for appetizers for dinner. We got the fried dumplings (amazing! ) crispy, sauces were flavorful without being over powering. The crab toast was mild and perfect and the toastini was perfectly toasted. We also got the southwestern egg rolls. My husband really enjoyed them. They were his favorite dish and felt they had a wonderful full bodied flavor. I found the sauce a little too smoky, but I'm not a fan of the smoked flavor. Our bartender, Andrea, was attentive and friendly and a wonderful addition to our experience. All in all, it was an enjoyable evening and we look forward to doing it again on our travels back through this way.

I went to school right up the road and I got invited to go here with a few friends several times. I can't remember the reason why we never came together but we were missing out. The happy hour specials at this place were fantastic. I came in last night at roughly 6pm when I got off i-95 (traffic was at a standstill and I was famished). Okay - cool story, am i right? :) The happy hour specials - they had a bunch of items for $5 (fajitas, wings, quesadillas, dips) and domestic bottles for $2. I opted for the Quesadillas, the Wings, and one of their beers on tap. I left my seat to wash my hands for 4 minutes and when I came back and seated myself at the bar again, my food was already being brought it me. I assume it was because so many people order the happy hour specials, they had it ready. The food was decent and the experience was like being at Kildare's on Main St, Newark without the rowdy college crowd.

Had dinner at the bar with RJ on Tuesday. We ordered the same southwestern eggrolls as last time, he got the crab cake sandwich, and I ordered quesadillas. The eggrolls were perfect, RJ said his crab cake was ok, and my quesadillas were ok as the peppers were overcooked and mushy, and it was very greasy. I regretted not getting one of the chicken sandwiches. I wll try that next time, and the 1/2 price nachos looked fantastic. Service was great, and we did not sit with empty drinks. Shellhammer's is a consistent 3.

Love this place! I recommend it to everyone to at least try once. I've never had a bad experience, ever. Their food is always amazing & I highly recommend the Navajo nachos, jambalaya, chicken/steak fajitas or any of their burgers!

  • Brenda K.

I am absolutely in love with the Tuscan chicken sandwich and sweet potato fries!!! It's always a bit dark in here but that never stops me from returning. The service is great. Bathrooms super clean, which in a bar is sometimes difficult to find!

Good beer selection good burgers and a fun atmosphere. This is one of my favorite local spots. I don't know why I don't visit it more!

I gave them the fourth start for service and the outstanding wings. I thought they were great. We had several orders of them and then had dinner. They have a great beer menu, with a lot of craft choices. Good place to hang out, eat wings and have a few cold beers. Our waitress, who turned into the bartender and her replacement were both very friendly and efficient. The rub is that my burger was WAY overcooked. how do you get that wrong when you are a burger place? Anyway, everything else was good and hence the 4 starts.

    (4)
  • Kevin H.

I ordered four different burgers for my family, and I found out that the burgers were average at best. I spent almost 50 bucks for the meal had to wait a very long time to get my food. I will not go back to this place.

I think I will simply accept that Delaware is filled with surprises; here rests another great place in a typical suburban plaza. The interior, as best as I can describe, is a contemporary pub. Smooth wooden finishes with a nice ambient fluorescent lighting. There is ample seating from the bar, high top tables, and booths. Even the bathrooms are inviting. You'll feel comfortable in here. The service was a bit disappointing and I would hate to give negative reviews for service of one visit, but our waiter was crap. I get this is a pub style restaurant, but if you are also offering a dining experience, have a waiter that has a memory span longer than that of a fruit fly. We had to constantly ask for water, menus, silverware, our check, water, menus, silverware, our check, our check... get it? The food was redeeming for service and I had almost forgotten about how crappy our waiter was until he came back without my water. I had ordered the Jambalaya, which in the back of my mind could have been risky at a pub. To my surprise, it was delicious, spicy and never got boring. Every bite was a different experience between the chicken, shrimp, and Andouille sausage. The spiciness of this dish I would rank 7/10. It doesn't linger for too long, but it'll make you feel warm and leave your tongue with a nice tingle. I would recommend this dish, unfortunately I had forgotten to take my food home after I had boxed it up, bummer. Oh well, more reason to come back. The drink selection is fantastic. They offer a large list of various beers, mixed drinks and a very sweet selection of martinis. My only disappointment was their false advertising of having Southern Tier's Pumking. It was listed at the bar, but no longer available. So many dreams crushed that night. But redemption was earned with so many beers to choose from. Overall, Mr. Shellhammer you've won me over, but next time I go I will request another server.

I've gone many times and I really like this restaurant! The food is always good, the atmosphere is nice, the facilities are clean, and the waiters and waitresses are great! I went tonight and enjoyed $6 burgers as well as half price appetizers. My waitress, Jess, was really nice and helpful. It's a great place to order a burger and hang out with friends.

A Great place to grab a meal, a quick bite, watch a game, our just hang out With friends. We met friends here this eveNing and had the crab nachos which were reCommend by our server Eric, who was very knowledgeable about the menu, and they were delicious. We also grabbed a burger and a turkey sandwich which were bOth excellent.

This review is a compilation of a years worth of visits. The only problem with this place is that it's just not large enough to hold all the people that want to give them business. Andrea is often at the bar and she's very good. Katylin is very nice. Julianna had the real test though when I brought my family in from out of town and she knocked it out of the park! I was trying to take my father to a restaurant in Philly and he just wanted to keep coming back to Shellhammers. The first time I met the manager Joe, he was there on his off day and we started talking beer. He encouraged me to taste many of the craft beers they had available to find the one I liked best. I've never had a bad service experience here. The food is very good and the staff are always energetic and friendly. There isn't a better place around honestly.

We pulled off the highway on a recent road trip looking for a place to eat dinner, and ended up at Shellhammer's. It's in a strip mall and looks like nothing much from the outside, but looks can be deceiving. Inside it has a pleasant, tavern-y atmosphere. The happy hour specials are good, especially the $5 appetizers. Dinner for a family of three totaled less than $30 including a good tip! True, one of us was driving, one of us is currently pregnant, and the other one is two years old, so we didn't take advantage of the alcohol specials this time around. But the drink prices seemed very reasonable, and they have a good beer selection. Nothing we ate struck me as particularly memorable, but it was good, solid American bar/grill fare. Also, although I would say this place skews slightly more to the "bar" side of bar and grill, it was family-friendly at 5:00 in the afternoon on a Monday. They have high chairs, kids' cups, and a children's menu with crayons, and we noticed at least one other family with a baby while we were there. I could see this becoming part of our regular rotation if we were local. As is, we'll keep it in mind as a good stopping place on road trips up and down 95.

Behind the windowless door in a strip mall is a warm, upbeat sports bar. Great selection of beers and tasty signature burgers. My wife and I were passing through Newark on I-95, checking Yelp to find the right place for dinner. We were not disappointed.

Great pub atmosphere. Attentive staff which is great. Guinness on tap even better! The Tijuana meatloaf and fries were delicious. Recommend this place if you want good pub grub and a relaxed atmosphere to have a few pints.

We live nearby and finally checked it out after hearing good reviews from friends and on Yelp. Pros: Great ambiance, very clean, nice beer selection, decent prices, good service. Cons: The food. Very unimpressed. We went for burnch. I got the breakfast burger, which I ordered medium rare and it came out well done (I have a strict rule of never sending back an overdone burger - not worth the risk!). The burger itself was well-seasoned even if it was overdone, but the roll was COVERED in oil! It had a sheen on it and was so slippery I could hardly hold on to the burger. I still feel pretty gross from all of the oil on that burger. The home fries were okay. My bf ordered the French Dip. He was incredibly disappointed, to the point where he spit out a bite at the end. I'm not a huge fan of roast beef anyway, but took a bite and it just tasted off. The fries were about on par with what you could get at a school cafeteria. $40 for our meals and two beers felt like a lot of money considering how disappointed we were with their food. I am truly hoping we just had a bad experience, but I don't think I'll be willing to try again anytime in the near future.

My #1 go to for brunch on the weekends. It's also my first choice when I'm looking for a drink and a bite. Their drink selection is better than you'd expect and their food is always amazing. Try the eggs Chesapeake if you happen to stop in for brunch, you won't ever want to go anywhere else.

So I hear this place is known for its Jambalaya, I wish I could handle spicy food! I tried eating the Jambalaya but it was way too spicy for my liking, the couple of bites i had were pretty good. Shortly after I ordered the Ruben sandwich which was also good!! I stuck to beer so I can't speak on their drinks being good or not. If you're like me, always wondering what to wear-I would stick to casual.

I absolutely love this place! This is my favorite place to go after work and unwind. The food is as good as it gets for a bar type location. The burgers are great and don't pass up the chicken fingers, yum!!! Drinks are reasonably priced and the severs are friendly, personable and attentive. I always feel like I'm at home at shellhammers.

This place is a gem. They have some pretty good beers on tap and a decent bottle list as well. The bar scene is chill and the whole place is open, which makes the atmosphere almost home-like or more like a lounge rather than a bar or pub. The food is really good. I hope to get a chance to try a full entree. I have tried the blackened tuna bites, the Caribbean chicken tenders, the dinner sized house salad (with the aforementioned appetizers mixed in) and the 7 layer dip. It was all good. The tenders are grilled and they are really tasty. They come with a good pineapple curry sauce. The tuna bites were spicy and delicious and the 7 layer dip was bumpin, but I wished one of those layers had some beef in it. The only thing that threw me off a little was the bar tending. They didn't quite check in as much as I would've hoped, and I went beerless for a little bit. They weren't that busy either, they were just kinda chitchatting behind the bar and it was difficult to get their attention. However, this is not a huge problem and it won't prevent me from going back.

Great local bar, full of folks hanging out and having fun. Just went in for only the second time. The place has character and a good atmosphere for a strip mall bar. Thru have a solid craft and macro beer selection. The menu is just a solid bar lineup. Got the chicken nachos and they were very good. Needed a bit more chicken. The salsa was awesome. If you like nachos that have chips that don't taste like they came from a bag, this is you. And they put them in the oven to warm and melt the cheese. Kind of reminded me of Klondike Kate's from 20yrs ago. The service was very good. The bartender handled a full bar plus the tables. If you want a local/casual place to chill, have good food and beer, and hear some good music, this is your place.

Don't you hate it when you miss happy hour? Me too. But if you work, or have kids, responsibilities, or what have you, this does tend to happen. This happened to me on a Tuesday night, but "Don't fret!" says my waitress. "We have three can buckets of our craft beer for ten bucks, and half off nachos!" SCORE! As an enlightened beer drinker, I can know that canned beer scares away some newer afficionados of craft beer, who believe that bottles are king. Not so! Cans are better constructed now to eliminate that metal taste, they block more light, are better for the environment, and are more economical to use. I had some good local beers that I had never heard of, which put a smile on my face. The nachos were really good too, with fresh jalapeno slices. The blue cheese burger was delicious and the service was fast and friendly. As many have mentioned, don't let the strip mall scare you. This is a great restaurant!

  • Corey D.

The only drawback of this place in the location. It is stuck between a sub-par ACME grocery store and Burlington Coat Factory. This place needs a corner of its own. They have a good selection of brews (local too) on tap or bottle. Pony-up at the bar and enjoy a sports game on either of the flat screens above with a Dogfish ale and a burger of your choice. Burgers are 5 bucks on Wendsdays i believe. The menu caters to everything from sandwiches to steak entrees. I recommend substituting for the sweet potato fries with any sandwich if you so choose. My favorites are the Brooklyn Pastrami and the Steak and Mushroom Salad. The prices are very reasonable and the staff are friendly and prompt. If you are by some means passing through the Christiana/Newark area, this is the best restaurant around.

  • Kevin D.

For two times in a row now, the service has been atrocious. It was slow, less than 15 people in the place and they got our drink orders wrong, lost our food order and didn't even apologize.

I have great love for Shellhammer's. It's a gem despite being tucked away in a strip mall. My husband and I don't make it out that way often, but we've been coming there for years (as I once *did* live close by), and it only gets better. When we do come, it's most often for burger nights. But we've also been really impressed when we've had other things on the menu, like a portabello mushroom salad they once had on the menu. Despite the distance, we will absolutely make the drive as opposed to going to burger nights that are closer by (like McGlynn's - gross). They are simply the best burgers of all the burger nights we've tried in the county. We've tried all of the varieties, and the only one that we wouldn't get again is the one that comes on a different kind of bread. I can't recall the name of that one, but the bread was a little too thin and got soaked through with the sauce that was on the burger, making it difficult to hold. But the buns on the other burgers are just fine. The burgers themselves are larger than the ones I've had at other area bars, and prepared well. The toppings are well thought-out, and flavorful. Another nice touch about this place is the selection of hot sauces that are on each table. We get a different sampling of hot sauce every time we go, and the servers bring out a complimentary basket of nachos (which seem to be made on the premises) when you sit down. Then there's the beer selection. It's a rather adventurous and ever-evolving beer selection for, again, an unassuming little place in a strip mall in New Castle. The recent renovations are nice, giving the place a warm, classy, yet not too upscale feel. The patronage - well, you get a lot of college guys and sometimes a few rough characters at the bar, but that's not much of a deterant. I just don't sit at the bar. The service is average.

  • Rodge B.

Wednesday is $5 burger night, and I suggest the turkey burger. The avocado is what sets it off. I'm more of a light beer guy, but they have a large beer selection if you're into that. It's recently been remodeled and also accepts the Shemp card if you're familiar with Scratch Magoo's and Tyler's. Great wait staff who are also easy on the eyes. LOL

I was staying down the road from this place on a recent business trip and ended up there twice. I first night I rolled into my hotel around 11 PM and went out in search of a bite and a beer. Walking in, the place has a great pub atmosphere - just dark enough, and a decent sized bar. Being Monday, it was half-priced cheesesteak night, so I went with that and a Yuengling. While the steak part was hot and flavorful, the rest of the dish left much to be desired. The bread, while not soggy, was much wetter than I expected and the fries looked like they were spooned out of the fryer. I have never seen fries so waterlogged with fryer oil. 1st night rounded out with a C- grade. I ended up back there the next night, this time about 7PM. The sandwich I ordered the next night was rather good, and the fries were as they should be as well. The old-timer next to me had good things to say about the Caesar Salad as well. Bartenders are attentive and friendly. The beer menu is impressive. Moral of the story - Good place, but don't order food late. Either the cook drinks all night and he's barely hanging in at the end of the shift or he goes home and the busser is back there cooking. Either way, I'd hit the Wendy's after 10 PM.

I found this place using Yelp for the first time. I was so happy with the experience, I signed up so I can leave this review. I have passed this place 100x thinking it was only a bar, I was very wrong. My wife and I don't drink so we were worried it might still have a bar atmosphere. Very glad to say it is very nice inside, no loud music, the people were incredibly nice. The people at the bar weren't yelling or obnoxious. MOST IMPORTANTLY...The food was excellent. The Navajo Nachos were delicious and everyone should experience them. I got a Rawhide Burger because of the hype from other reviewers. Incredibly good. I was so full from all the nachos, I brought half my burger home and finished it the next day. My wife and I haven't been living in Delaware long but were very happy we found this place. We already want to go back.

Got the Jamaican fingers They were perfectly spiced, and served w/ a curry sauce which enhanced the flavor even more! Got the baja turkey burger it was pretty good, had a nice kick to it, but if I new that the jamaican finger were that good I would of got 3 orders of them since they are that good!

Tucked in a strip-mall plaza, this place is worth a stop. It has above average sandwiches and burgers and a spectacular beer selection. It's also cozy and warm feeling, with a nice long bar...great for a stop at happy hour!

I don't dole out many five stars but Shellhammer's gets one. I had an absolute wonderful experience here this past weekend. Don't let the location in a strip mall keep you from visiting this place. This inside is tastefully decorated and with a very inviting atmosphere. We came here for lunch and were quickly seated. The waitress was very friendly and service was excellent during out entire dining experience. I had the crab cake sandwich with fries. The crab cake was nicely seasoned, piping hot, and on a exquisitely tasty bun. The fries were also good. I couldn't get my food down fast enough. I would love to comment on the sig-o's roast beef sandwich but I didn't get to taste it. He had his sandwich wolfed down so fast I am surprised he didn't choke. I will definitely stop by this place again when we track back up to NYC and add to this review. Make sure to detour off 95 and grab lunch or dinner here. You won't be disappointed!

I give it 4 stars for all the fun this place has inspired. We go for the chicken fingers, crab nachos, and fajitas! I'm a liquor drinker so I have to spend more than my friends (they have good specials for all you beer drinkers) but overall the tab is not that bad. We are not barstool dwellers. It is all about a late night booth where we can hang and talk. I have heard some of the WEIRDEST musical choices played in this place (Korn then P.Diddy then Madonna then Dropkick Murphys then Hanson) and I am sure it is done on purpose. This is what happens when drunks hang around a jukebox.

I checked this place out with my sister after reading the reviews on here. Was not let down. Nice interior of old wood and brick (yea, in a strip mall). Awesome beers on tap. I wasn't quite sure what I wanted because I hIdn't had many of the selections on tap but the bartender was happy to sling samples my way. Nice! I rocked out with the Allagash tripel which really took the edge off. The jukebox has a nice selection and many good tunes are only 1 credit. I get frustrated by internet jukeboxes that just have a few teaser 1 credit songs and all the "popular" ones are 2 credits. Journey, however, was nothing but 2 credit songs so my sister had to settle for the Journey runner up: Styx. We split a burger later in the evening and it was bangin'. Cooked to our desired temp, prepared very nicely. Thank You! I'd certainly go back to this place. I wasn't sure if it was on the pricier side though. 4 drafts and a burger was $33. But the value was there.
