Presumptious, overpriced for what you get. Mushroom soup served cup size for $ 7, and salty. Crabcakes full of filler and aeoli sauce served on top, instead of on side - so patron can choose for themselves, whether to eat crabcakes with sauce; hence cant taste crab cake absent strong sauce. Handmade fries good.

One of my favorite places to eat in. Although a bit pricey, the food is worth it! The appetizers are fantastic, their entrees are robust and wonderful, and the restaurant itself is friendly and comfortable. On a great day, the backyard is open to eat in!

A hidden secret! Love this place for Breakfast and Lunch. Service and staff are friendly and any wait is well worth it! Great for kids and family and cool evenings under the lights outside. Coffee from Swell Joe and best local bagels. Specials and a season menu keeps it VERY INTERESTING.

The Backyard is one of those places I went to solely based on Yelp reviews. This restaurant is flanked by a low end diner, a car wash, a laundry mat, and a dollar store. The surrounding residential area is mostly low income. So I never sought out The Backyard based on its location. The Backyard seems to cater to the implant demographic of Milton, tourists, and higher end restaurant goers. While not truly high end, The Backyard is a little pricey for the middle class and low income residents of Milton. While on the higher end of pricing though, The Backyard is worth every penny when it comes to quality and quantity. The food is absolutely fantastic. The meat is high quality, the vegetables are fresh, and the recipe combinations make fantastic flavors. We ordered a crab fries which had a fantastic cheese sauce poured on the fries. I had a steak salad which was affordable on the cheaper end but filling and absolutely fabulous flavors. The wife had a steak and shrimp which came with a huge, grade A, portion of steak and good shrimp. The Backyard both excels and suffers from service and presentation. The restaurant is nicely done on the inside with comfortable chairs and a relaxing atmosphere. The service is fast, friendly, and engaging. But if I were to nitpick this is where I would do it. I ordered a craft beer and it was served in a bottle. I understand there is a portion of the craft beer elites that believes in the quality of the labels. But high quality beer needs to be served in a glass for full aroma and flavor to surface. They have a full bar so I had no problem getting a glass, but in such a nice restaurant serving a craft beer like it was a Coors was a little low class. Also, the crab meat in the crab fries was refrigerator cold when served which gave it a negative contrast to the hot fries. The crab was also covered in way too much old bay which took away from the taste. Fortunately the fries were good enough on their own to compensate, but it's such a waste of crab meat. Lastly, my wife's steak was served with a huge piece of fat attached. The steak itself was so large the their was more than enough served. But the fat could have been cut off in preparation before the food when out. In the end I don't think The Backyard is something that we're going to add to our monthly rotation. After we left I went across the street to the liquor store where I could have gotten a $13 6-pack of that $6 bottle of craft beer. The Backyard certainly fills a niche for the area but there are better high end restaurants just down the road in Rehoboth which are slightly nicer and even a bit cheaper. I am willing to return to The Backyard during the off-season to see if they cater more to the farm community base or if they hold out and stay the same.

I came here with a group of six on a Tuesday night which happened to be fries-night! We ordered avocado fries that came with a sriracha aioli and an order of the french fries on the fries-night menu that came with pulled meat and cheese. The avocado fries were lightly breaded and served slightly hot with a dipping bowl for the aioli. The avocado fries were eaten just as quickly as they were brought out! Our table loved them. The fries were brought out shortly after we finished the avocado fries in a large bowl, and they were equally delicious. Our server was great and really friendly.

My boyfriend and I had taken a trip down to Milton, DE to visit Dogfish Head Brewery. On the way back to Philly, we decided to stop somewhere for food and happened upon The Backyard! We had ordered calamari, the BBQ chicken sandwich, and a side of mac and cheese. The calamari was fantastic - lightly breaded and freshly cooked! The BBQ sauce did not overpower the pulled chicken and it was topped off with a wonderful helping of cole slaw. The mac and cheese was lacking heavily in taste and culinary creativity. It was horribly bland. Overall, The Backyard is a chic and beautifully designed restaurant that serves average to above-average quality food. However, it did not leave upon me a lasting impression to return back a 2nd time. And for that, that is why I give it a 3-star rating.

Open airy place with friendly and efficient wait staff. I had Laura. The avocado fries were to die for. No have to to figure out that recipe. Crispy outside warm delis houses inside. Turkey club had tons of meat and the rockfish special was blackened but not too spicy.

Great little place to visit after visiting Dog Fish Head. Great food, great service, good prices.

The food was excellent. The wait service was excellent. Meal delivery took longer than it should have. AND THE PLACE IS NOISY. Background music keeps thumping and hard surfaces do not absorb any noise. But, worth a try if you haven't been there.

We had an awesome lunch here following our tour of Dogfish Head. Great menu and fresh ingredients. The patio and backyard were perfect for a slow-paced lunch with the family. The kids were able to play around in the "backyard" while the adults relaxed with a second drink!

Five star rating for ambiance, service snd staff. 3.5 stars for meals. 1 for Chocolate cake, it was rock hard and not fresh. 4 for Honey pie was delicious. Pricey. Better happy hour place.

My wife and I just ate here today and we loved the Shrimp and Grits appetizers and I had a burger which also was good. My favorite thing from the whole meal was the homemade pickles. I really wish they would sell they separate to go.

A fantastic little cafe in growing Milton! We were promptly seated at our choice of a table outside. It was a beautiful day and I could not pass up the breeze flowing through the patio. Our waitress took our drink orders and they were brought out quickly. We ordered 2 appetizers, the fries & avocado. Both were fantastic. They tasted extremely fresh and like someone had truly taken time to make the dishes. Our main entrees, for lunch, were sizable for the price. I enjoyed a delicious turkey club sandwich while the others at my table ordered a cuban panini and the pulled pork grilled cheese. The desserts were also quite fantastic. The cookies and macaroons were to die for! The ladies on staff were so peppy and wonderful. They acted like a family and worked together. I loved that.

Amazing find. Came for bunch on Saturday around 12. Sat in in back yard in the sun. Comfy place, shaded porch tables, casual and welcoming service. Ordered two omelette with really fresh ingredients and amazing potatoes....the surfer and Mrs. potato head. Homemade health bar muffin...to die for (really!) Bathrooms were great too. Good for families as kids can run around backyard and large tables out back for a group. Service was quick Burgers at nearby table looked good as well.

Got Breakfast with my wife. I got the custom omelet with scrapple and mushrooms. My wife got the Baconator Omelet which was also good. The decor is very relaxing and quaint. Overall for the price we didn't have any complaints. It didn't knock our socks off though. Service was good. We look forward to trying their dinner menu.

The place feels young and hip. Super clean with great service. I only been here a few times but the food is always great. The Yardbird, the fried green tomato BLT, the Trucker are all good. Another Plus is that they have Avocado Fries. There is good beer on tap and a bakery. So far one of the best place I've eaten in Delaware. Also close to the Dogfish Head Brewery.

This is a great place to eat, casual dining, great prices, and great food. My husband loved the hamburger, the crab fries, were also good, the crab was sweet and not over dressed. Will definitely go there again.

As far as I can tell, there's not a bad thing on the menu. Our large multi-generational party enjoyed a crab cake added to a beet salad, a pressed Cuban sandwich, a stellar reuben, a caprese sandwich, avocado fries, and many other items, all of which delighted. I decided to go all out and order "The Trucker" which was pulled pork with a light bbq sauce, caramelized onions and mac and cheese in a grilled sandwich. I subbed jicama slaw for fries and was really happy with the crunchy, tangy salad accompaniment. Plus, my siblings shared their fries with me :) As my brother (Chris R.) said, this restaurant wowed us at every turn, lithely accommodating 13 at the height of the lunch hour and providing us with great service. The decor is minimalist, light, and rustic at the same time and was an added bonus. Even the Dogfish Head illustrations on the walls were of note. We were so thrilled with this place! Thank you for an absolutely wonderful consolation prize (and Yelp reviewers for steering us here) after our long drive resulted in disappointment at the brewery.

Everything was incredible, what a treat! Our party got a mixture of brunch items, including avocado fries (mwah!), a cinnamon bun, egg sandwiches, potatoes and gravy (The Dude, to be exact), and a crab cake. The food was delicious AND interesting, and they had a great selection of beers and drinks to pair with it. My dad said his crab cake was a bit salty, taking it out of competition for top crab cake on this trip, but good nonetheless. I also loved the atmosphere. The inside was charming, with a breezy yet sophisticated feel. I can't wait until the next time we visit DE and get to go to The Backyard again!

Came here with the family on the way to the beach. Overall, our experience was excellent. The service was friendly and the food was great. We will be back. We ordered food across the menu - salads, burgers, sandwiches, chicken and the tuna. Everything was prepared perfectly, and we all thought the food tasted fresh. Family favorite items: grits appetizer, fries, snicker doodle cookie and lattes for dessert.

We arrived at 10am for Breakfast before heading to the beach. The decor is lovely, beverage menu is extensive, bakery items are to die for, and the breakfast menu is inventive yet classic. There were plenty of open tables. We ordered a cream cheese cinnamon roll (soooo good) to share. I give this 5+ stars. Then we ordered the Mrs. Potato Head omelet and the Baconater omelet. Both get high marks. They came with thickly sliced wheat toast and a side of potatoes or grits. We got the grits. It was a huge portion (too much to finish). They were creamy and full of flavor. To wash it all down we had chia tea and unsweetened ice tea. The reason The Backyard isn't getting 5 stars is because of the wait. Orders are taken using an iPad and it seems our and several other dinner's orders never transferred to the kitchen. The wait was long, even after our server told us about the mishap. This situation could have been made better if they offered to comp something for our trouble. Maybe the cinnamon roll or a beverage? This place worth a second chance because the food was killer...! Cinnamon rolls for everyone...

We gave eaten here twice in the past week--once for dinner and once for Sunday brunch. Both meals were quite good. Standout is an appetizer that is reminiscent of Sicilian arancia--deep fried cheesy polenta balls that look like small oranges. Food is well prepared and imaginative/blue mashed potatoes are gorgeous AND delicious. Mussels in beer and shallot broth--stout is a little overpowering, flavorwise, for the shellfish. Brunch was delicious...nice range of egg and meat dishes, as well as one veg offering, a pear, cheese and arugula croissant sandwich served with oven-prepared potatoes. Sausage gravy and biscuits ranks with the best I have had this far north. Bakery offerings looked scrumptious: we had a wonderful pecan sticky bun. Son had the Nutella and marshmallow fluff waffle --a sugar overload even an 11 year old could not finish. The inlet reason I am holding at four stars is that the service is amateur--most servers are young and lack experience. This should improve with time and attention. This is a nice enough restaurant that there should be no need for "food auctions" ("(who had the)waffle?") at table side. Wait staff use mini tablets to take orders so it should be easy enough to put the diners' requests in seat order so that whoever delivers the food need only know who is seated at position 1 to be able to serve the correct orders. Clearing by reaching across your diner is, likewise, a no-no. Some tables got bread baskets and some didn't. I expect some of this will resolve-the restaurant has barely been open two weeks now. By spring, it should be ready for prime time! Serve

Awesome crab cakes and short ribs. Even the side were great. Super fresh root veggies and lightly sauteed zucchini. Crisp and full of flavor! Nice light and fresh decor. Surprising restaurant for such a small town!

What a find! This modern diner is perfectly situated on the long ride to the Delaware beaches, and it's open early for breakfast. The food is fantastic here! Real potatoes, huge omelets, fresh jams, and good coffee. There isn't much more to ask for in a breakfast joint that's adjacent to a farm. It appears they have dinner specials too, but I only sat in for the breakfast. Worth the stop!

Great place in Milton! We ate here twice over our vacation, once for breakfast and once for lunch. Both times we were very pleased with our meal. For breakfast I had the "Farmer's Wife" and my husband had a pork roll omelette with cheese and grits. We both loved what we ate. For lunch we started with the crab fries. Do yourself a favor and order the crab fries! Boardwalk style French fries, seasoned with Old Bay, drizzled with cheese and topped with a generous portion of lump crab. Amazing! I had the vegetable flatbread for an entree and my husband had a burger. Both were very tasty. I agree with the other reviewer that it seemed like the person in the kitchen really cared when they prepared the food. Nothing packaged or canned. Real, fresh food.

Zoomed in here for a quick lunch with the kids on our way back home and was so happy we did...cute place with great fresh food. There are a few vegetarian options which was nice as well. I recommend the jicama slaw as a side. Delicious! Yummy baked goods and ice coffee for the road kept everyone happy for the drive. It won't be a super quick meal if that if what you are after, but it'll be healthy, pleasant, and yummy delicious!

Surprisingly nice find in Milton. Took the family in and had dinner. I had the filet, which was good, but slightly disappointing. Wife got the crab cakes and loved them, I even stole a bit and they were delicious. Kids had the fish bites and Mac n cheese, no complaints. Overall, good food, excellent service, great atmosphere, definitely be returning.

This was my first visit but I know Ami from The Vintage Cafe in Milton. The veggie slaw was great and the roasted vegetable sandwich was also very good. Bill had the fried fish sandwich (Mahi) and loved it. Great location on Rt. 16 in Milton with easy access and lots of parking. This will be a frequent place for us. Good fresh food well prepared and reasonable prices.

Awesome find. We came at an odd time (4pm) and got incredibly speedy and friendly service, plus delicious food. Crab fries - lump crab with white cheddar sauce & Old Bay, wow. My boyfriend's guac burger was medium rare and perfectly juicy, and I stole all his apple jicama slaw. The space itself is very clean nd modern - we sat on the back patio in the sunshine, it's probably even better at night. Wish I lived near this gem!

walking in I was pleasantly surprised by the look and feel of the restaurant. this restaurant is a hidden gem for the area. they have a great take on original dishes with a hint of a new progressive twist. I ordered the chicken burger with bacon jam. the bun was a good brioche bun. the cheese was cooked perfectly, barely able to stay in the burger because of how oozie it was. the bacon jam was a perfect complement to the richness of the cheese. I was a bit hesitant at first about the bacon jam but after eating it, it was perfectly savory from the bacon and perfectly sweet from the Jam. the only critique I have was that the chicken was a bit dry but had a great charcoal flavor. also they had avocado fries with an excellent sriracha based sauce.

We had a late lunch here and were pleased. I wanted a wild turkey burger, but they were out, so I had the Backyard Bird, which is a grilled chicken breast with bacon jam, cheddar cheese, and tomato. I had never had bacon jam before, and I am now a fan. The entire sandwich experience was quite nice. I thought the fries were a bit limp, and although I appreciated that they had the skins on, I would have liked them to be crispier. Service was very good and pleasant.

My family and I visited the Backyard earlier this week. We had driven to Milton to tour the Dogfish Head Brewery and had some time to kill before the tour started. We visited the Backyard for lunch and had a great experience. The server was extremely friendly and the food was delicious. We tried the crab smothered fries which were delicious. I had the goat and the goat cheese used on the sandwich was fresh and creamy. Would definitely go back if I'm ever in the area.

Pretty good, but not the best. For lunch we ordered fried calamari, a caprese hamburger, a grilled shrimp and quinoa salad, and a key lime tart. The best item was the key lime tart. It had true key lime character on a thick cookie crumb crust that perfectly accented the lime filling. It was garnished with whipped cream and a half strawberry. Beneath the tart was some flavorful strawberry coulis. The calamari was crunch and tender. The dipping sauces were a garlic aioli and a jalapeno jam. Both sauces were flavorful, but we found them too thick to easily adhere to the calamari. The grilled shrimp were a mixed bag. Three or four were quite tasty, but two had a pronounced iodine flavor. The hamburger was good. It was garnished with lettuce, tomato, roasted red peppers, and mozzarella cheese. I ordered it cooked medium. That was how it was cooked, but it was very dry, not at all juicy. I suspect that I would have liked it better, cooked medium rare. It would have been more moist. The french fries with the burger were hot and crisp, but like too many places these days, they were not consistently colored., They got soggy very quickly.

Don't judge this book by its cover! When we drove up the restaurant seemed very basic. Once you walk through the doors you will be very pleasantly surprised. The decor is chic industrial with a few beachy touches. The food was DELICIOUS-starting with the Mediterranean appetizer served with warm, delicious bread. They have a great selection of draft beer (Dogfish too I'm happy to report). Our entrees were the pork chop sandwich served on a delicious brioche roll and topped with perfectly sautéed onions and apple butter. The chop was perfectly prepared and delicious. The other entree was spinach salad and fish bites-both delicious. We'll be heading back.

My wife and I have had lunch at the Backyard on four or five occasions across the past month. The food is good but has been a bit inconsistent, as has the service--only once has a server followed up to ask if the food that was delivered was satisfactory, and beverage refills require calling the server over--the other reviewer who used the word amateurish was on target. Also with regard to iced beverages, particularly iced tea, is rather odd--bottles that sit out without ice--and results in refills (and sometimes the first serving) requiring a request for additional ice (something the wait staff should recognize and handle without having to be repeatedly asked. Parking is also a problem during peak period around mid-day. The place has potential and will no doubt evolve, but the service needs to rise to the level of the menu and the cold beverage process needs to be fixed.

A new restaurant near the downtown section of Milton, DE. My wife and I had breakfast and the food was excellent, the service was fine and the prices were reasonable. As this is a resort area it was busy, but not crowded on Saturday morning. The summer will probably be a lot busier. I would recommend for breakfast and based on the menu, lunch as well.
