Wife and Kids took car and went to the beach for dinner and boardwalk fun. I stayed behind and finished my Honey Do list. Outside at dusk it got cooler. So, I evening-walked around Gull Point and got hungry and hungrier - enough to realize how for 15 years I had passed by Rust's Sub & Sandwich, the Station with the PURE fuel signs out front. Having never stopped in I decided to keep walking two more miles to Rust's. I had always assumed the inside as being just a deli for carry out. I was surprised to find tables inside, surrounded by historical photographs of the place showing how it has evolved over time. To please me, Rusty's (as I call the place) must carry a fine selection of cold cuts and serve them generously, as taste and bold portions are truly the heart of a any great sandwich. My Italian Sub presented itself with slices of meat thickly filling the Sub and folded with the exact amount of condiments and flavors I had chosen from a list. Yes, you should experience something like a time-machine and something much more than a Pure Filling Station from long ago. Yes, you should sit down inside Rusty's and enjoy one of many pure, sandwich gems. I glad I finally did; and then I walked home in the dark.

Some friends and I stopped by here on the way to the shore, and we couldn't have been happier. We decided to stop at local spots rather than fast food, and Rust, which has been here since 1937, hit the spot. With old timey gas pumps and signs outside, and lots of old photos inside, the small place serves inexpensive, delicious Southern-style sandwiches (including breakfast all day.) Aside from what you might expect at a sandwich shop, they have other southern fare like pork roll and pickled beets. It's run by the Rust family still and is a throwback to when highways were two lanes and lots of little mom and pop stores served travelers. We got an egg, cheese and bacon on bagel, a egg and cheese on toast, and another one which my buddy ate too fast for me to see what it was, plus some pickled beets and home fries. However, the Rust family which runs it (on that day it seemed to be mom, dad and a young daughter) came over to apologize that they didn't have home fries, gave us our money back for them, and gave us free hash browns. It was a nice touch that just served to remind us of what we all miss when we drive big highways or only stop at fast food spots. Worth a stop, or even a detour if you like history and inexpensive, tasty sandwiches.
