Best. Ice cream. Ever. I don't make it up to the farm very often, but thank goodness they sell Woodside Farm ice cream at the farmers market right up the road. Highly recommend the farm experience, though - in fact, if you make it there on National Ice Cream Day, you even get to take a tour of the facilities. And it's neat to see those pretty Jersey cows grazing.

Best ice cream in the area! My favorite is the Chocolate Coconut Almond. Definitely plan to enjoy your ice cream at one of the picnic tables and say hello to the resident cows.

The place is the Field of Dreams of ice cream. As I sat on a bench in the field outside the shop all I could think of was James Earl Jones' speech: Ray, people will come Ray. They'll come to Delaware for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up in the driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at the register as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, we won't mind if you look around, you'll say. It's only a few bucks per cone. They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and ice cream they lack. And they'll walk out to the benches; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the fences, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll eat their ice cream and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been ice cream. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But ice cream has marked the time. This farm, this dessert: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come. That's what I think of their ice cream.

HOLD THE PHONE. Best ice cream ever. And if you've ever seen me around ice cream, you'd know how serious I am about this farm/creamery. So far I have inhaled the vanilla and dirt. Dirt doesn't have enough cookie swirl in it for my liking, but the gummy worms are a really nice touch. This ice cream is also great to stock up on bc it's just so FRESH! My boyfriend bought some last week and I just had some last night. It wasn't freezer burned or anything like Ben and Jerry's gets after a car ride home and re-freezing. This ice cream also melts super quickly, which is how you can tell how delicious it will be. Remember to bring cash! It's about $5/pint. They also make their own fudge, but that's not my game. We joke that it's like having zero food miles ice cream bc the cows are grazing/mooing as you walk in the front door.

This is ice cream at its best! It is so thick and creamy it hardly melts until it gets into your mouth. Great, original flavors, too. Yum

this place is my favorite thing about visiting my parents in DE (besides visiting the parents, that is). if only it were possible to live on their black raspberry and peach (2 separate flavors) ice cream. i am gutted when they close shop for the off season (november thru mid-late march).

So how do I start to tell you about our trip to Woodside Creamery! Well this all started because Miriam asked if anyone was up for a road trip to get some ice cream? Well I knew I was in when I heard Farm Fresh Homemade Ice Cream and well I am one of those that will travel just about anywhere for food and it turned out to be a wonderful day for a road trip and I have to give props to our driver and co-pilot as they did a great job as I relaxed in the back seat. OMG - this is a great little find! If you are every in the area or feel like a road trip you have to try Woodside Farm Creamery. It has been around for over 200 years and in the same family. In 1996 Delaware recognized Woodside Farm as one of the few remaining Centennial farms in the state. In 1998 they opened the Creamery and have even been written up in Gourmet Magazine as a matter of fact that is how Miriam found out about this place. So lets talk Ice Cream - We walked in the door to check it out and the flavor selection was incredible everything you could want in my opinion. Everything from the basic flavors like Vanilla and Chocolate to the interesting ones like Cotton Candy and Cappuccino Crunch the girls behind the counter were just wonderful and helpful to all of us. So Karla, Bridget, Meghann, and Sandra let us try a lot of the flavors so we could make up our minds on what we wanted. I tasted Black Cherry, Cotton Candy, Cookies and Cream, Chocolate something (Kevin what did you get again?) it was all so tasty it was hard to make my choice! My choice was cake batter and I have to tell you it was like passion in my mouth. The flavor was like tasting just made cake batter with a little crunch from the sugar cone. So we all cruised outside to sit at a picnic table under the tree and eat our ice cream. Then it was time for round two for some of us. We walked back in and were greeted by Karla, Bridget, Meghann, and Sandra and a YELP cheer for us! I was so cute I can't tell you! They just could not get over the fact we drove from DC to DE for Ice Cream. After the cheer and reviewing the list one more time I had decided I wanted to have something a little lighter so I went with Raspberry Sorbet in a waffle cone this time and once again it was a party in my mouth. It was like tasting fresh raspberries that had been frozen and put inside a fresh warm waffle. You can take their entire flavor selection home with you in pint or quart size and they even have an ice pack for you to take it home in for sale. They also make homemade fudge (which I brought home and have not tasted yet) and ice cream pies. They carry also carry bottled water and sodas as well as a cheese that comes from a local dairy. They offer private birthday parties and celebrations on site for those of you who want to do something like that. All in all I have to say this was a great find and I want to say THANKS Miriam for suggesting it. This was a great way to spend my Sunday! Next review will be on what we did first before having Ice Cream! Crab Cakes at G& M REVISED: Tasted the fudge tonight - OMG OMG OMG this is I think the best fudge I have ever had in my life and I think I know why. Because it is made with fresh milk or cream. This fudge is the reason why I will be traveling back to DE sooner than later. BTW: I bought vanilla and plain chocolate fudge.

Maybe its a local thing, but I LOVE IT HERE! I've never had anything other than INCREDIBLE ice cream and I always sample each of my 3 kids flavors too, purely for quality control. My personal favorite is the motor oil (swirls of caramel and fudge in coffee ice cream). The teenagers that work here are always friendly even when they are hurried. A farm with rolling fields of grass, dairy cows, adirondack chairs, ....whats not to love??? This family owned business even has several community events a year including a tour of their ice cream processing area. They do send their milk out to pasteurized but the ice cream they sell is made there. We love this place and look forward to our visits in the summer months.

OH no. I grew up down the street from this place. Who wouldn't want to love it? I mean, seriously? And I'm all about the small-farmer Michael Pollan nonsense. And I hear about this place trying to save their farm from the evil developers by starting a local ice-cream stand. But see, they pissed me off here. I don't think they make their ice cream. And even if they do, honestly, their ice cream is nasty. Just nasty. Zero, zero flavor. But even worse, their packaged ice cream to go is all about the chemicals. There are chemicals in there there is no way they have on a farm. They must just order it from whatever local melamine-filled Chinese factory supplies any old ice cream factory, considering what I read as ingredients on the package. Total, total bummer. I mean, total bummer.

  • Alexis M.

Akk! Mary P., seriously?? I hadn't heard! Now, I love that this place is local. But, I gotta be honest, the quality is just not that great. I've had grainy ice cream, fruit flavors that taste only of sugar, and frankly un-original combinations. Every flavor I tasted is just simply too sweet. It's a shame, because with high quality cream and milk, they should take the time to let the ingredients speak for themselves, and treat them right. That being said, it wouldn't be so bad if the line wasn't at least a quarter of a mile long every time I've been. The quality just does not warrant these lines. I really wish Hockessin hadn't sold off all of its other farmland to Toll Brothers, so maybe this place would have some competition to straighten up and fly right.

My favorite place in Delaware! Very adorable farm setting, with some of the best ice cream I've ever had (try the raspberry chip and banana)~ Plenty of seating outside, but I prefer sitting on the hood of my car, watching the cows saunter along while I eat! Mmmmm~ They price the ice cream by weight, and is cash only (but there is an ATM in the front). What an amoooooozing experience (I just had to, haha).

  • Kevin L.

Lauren B. did a fantastic write-up of our shared experience at Woodside. I think that our enthusiasm synergized with the natural energy of the girls working there which made it a load of fun for everyone. My two cents on the place are that I really liked a good number of the ice cream flavors - some were a little more rich than I could handle for more than a taste (the Chocolate Thunder comes to mind). Picking a flavor wasn't a problem at all because 1) they were all so great and 2) there was no shortage of tasting spoons dipped in yummy ice cream-ness to go around. I loved the Dark Forest chocolate ice cream I had with chocolate chunks and real cherries. The sorbet was very tasty, but a little too much for me in large doses. Other favorites were the Orange Honey Blossom (Xi accurately described it as a super awesome quasi-creamsicle) and the Motor Oil (an award winning ice cream). Definitely worth the trip during the dog days of summer; even better as a road trip with rock star Yelpers.

We first got to know Woodside Farm ice cream at Winterthur's Garden Days and at Sweet Lucy's (the Wilmington ice cream parlor, not the NE Philly BBQ mecca). Baby and I really, really liked it (and we still do). However . . . I made the fateful decision to take a trip to the Woodside Farm mothership in Hockessin a couple of months ago. After driving by ginormous McMansions, the cows gently grazing in the fields of Woodside were a welcome sight and bode well, I thought, for their fresh from the farm reputation. I grabbed a couple of pints to take home and got a small cone to see me back to the car. We and our dinner guests enjoyed the ice cream back home. But then I got a little curious and started to read the ingredient labels. You know that scene in The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy and crew are crestfallen when they find out the wizard is just some guy behind a curtain? Well, that's sort of how I felt when I saw what goes into Woodside Farm's ice cream. It struck me as less "Farm Fresh" than "Factory Flavored." For example, one of the common ingredients was something called sodium carboxymethylcellulose. The farthest thing from my mind when I think of farm fresh ice cream is an ingredient with 11 syllables! In addition, I also saw that they use artificial vanillin. Sheesh, even Breyer's use real vanilla. I guess I should have been a bit suspicious when I saw them offer peach ice cream in April. Not exactly the peak peach season around here. We'll still continue to enjoy our Woodside Farms ice cream but now know that it isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Woodside Farm is an ice cream lover's fantasy. It's a small ice cream parlour that's basically in the middle of the farm where the cows are that the milk comes from! The ice cream is homemade, ridiculously delicious, creamy and so FRESH! They have tons of delectable flavors, including Motor Oil ( coffee, with caramel and chocolate swirls), lemon coconut, triple chocolate, blueberry cheesecake, and more. The seating is perfect for a nice summer day, with lots of shade and tons of wooden picnic tables spread across the grass. When we went there were multiple bluegrass bands jamming for all to listen. On top of all this goodness, the cones are 46 cents per ounce and they sell fudge! Do yourself a favor and go to Woodside Farm, see the baby cows, and enjoy some incredible ice cream!

Took the family, and everyone liked the ice cream. The bacon ice cream was one of the favorites. My youngest son loved the dirt (chocolate, oreo cookies and gummie worm) ice cream. We will def come back...

Best ice cream period. Each member of the family has a favorite. Mine is birthday cake, my wife's is the black raspberry. Atmosphere is fresh farm...because it's located on a farm.

Delicious ice cream from milk from cows on the same property! Yee-haw! Also, stopped in on a Saturday and they had folks pickin' and strummin' so you could sit around and listen to the music while you enjoyed your treat. Great spot, fair prices, delicious treats. I hope to enjoy again soon.

Best ice cream I have ever had. and I LOVE ice cream. My husband is working on the east coast and we have been in the area to visit him. We came here and it was just amazing. The BEST ice cream, ever. I wish I could have some right now...but I am here in my office. Why doesn't this computer have a teleport button? Because I would teleport myself to woodside creamery RIGHT NOW!!

After reading about Woodside in GOURMET Magazine I decided it sounded worth the two hour drive to Delaware. Thankfully, I am not alone in my willingness to drive long distances for the prospect of amazing ice cream. With a three car caravan in place we decided to make a day of it, stopping first outside Baltimore at G&M for crab cakes and then heading on to Woodside for ice cream. As soon as we pulled onto the road that Woodside Farm sits on I was sure the drive had been worth it. The trees, the cooler-than-DC weather, the pastoral scene with the grazing cows - this was definitely what I'd envisioned. We were welcomed warmly by friendly ice cream scoopers Karla, Bridget, Meghann and Sandra who upon finding out we had driven all the way from DC for their ice cream agreed to allow us unlimited tastings. If you know yelpers, you know we took advantage of their generosity tasting cake batter, motor oil, orange honey blossom, butter brickle, chocolate thunder and more! Let's just say I feel very qualified to write this review with so many samples! In the end I got two cones. I took things slow starting with a scoop of chocolate peanut butter on a sugar cone. It was the perfect balance of chocolate and peanut butter and in my opinion a must try for anyone who loves this combination. I then went back for mango sorbet, coconut and banana on a waffle cone. That might've been a bit overkill in retrospect but hey - we'd driven over 100 miles to get there! Woodside Farm is an ideal en route stop on your way from Washington, DC to New York as it's right on the way. The gals at the counter are real sweethearts, there's plenty of picnic tables outside to sit at and the rock road fudge makes a fabulous take-home gift.

If you are calorie conscience and hold out for that truly amazing ice cream, this is what you have been waiting for to indulge!! Our family enjoys every flavor at a different times of the year. The two most popular in our house are Peppermint Chip and Cookies and Cream. So creamy and delicious!! The new Chocolate Thunder is a decadent mix that will satisfy any chocolate lover's craving. In the summer, my kids love the Cotton Candy. If you are in the area, do not miss the opportunity to try this place. After the season when the are closed, you can purchase packaged quarts at the Back Burner to go.

This is a great escape from the hustle and bustle. Nestled in an exurban hood filled with lavish homes, this farm is worth the trip. This cheese/fudge/ice cream outlet had some country charm, an excellent staff eager to stuff you silly with samples and pep, and deliciousness. The scoopers will make you any combination you like; even a spoonful of a myriad of flavors. I opted for orange honey blossom, banana and chocolate thunder. All were creamy and very passionately the flavor their named signified. Overall, it was as good at the UConn Dairy Bar, which says a lot. I would have liked some seltzer water to cut the sweetness and a real bathroom. PS: Isn't it funny how Delaware is this little hidden gem of a state with Rehobeth/Dewey/King of Prussia Mall and Woodside Farm? Who'd have thunk it. PPS: Newark is a cute college town. We drove through it. PPPS: The mapquest directions were wrong.

BEST ICE CREAM EVER! I could literally taste the fresh cow's milk in each lick. The farm and atmosphere definitely adds to the experience. I always get chocolate or strawberry on a cone (I regret it when i don't get a cone). It is cash only so make sure to come prepared. That's kind of a bummer, but I could really care less because I love it so much and keeps the local feel alive (if that makes sense at all). They also sell shakes, fudge, milk soap, stickers, shwag, pop, water, and pint's I believe. Toppings can be added too, but the ice cream is just so good that I don't want to spoil it with extra stuff. I will never forget this place and must go everytime I'm back the area!

I paid a visit to Woodside Farm Creamery last night (Mon.) with CM and my parents. Upon arrival, the first thing we noticed was how busy it was--in fact, CM commented that it was the busiest ice cream parlor he'd ever been to! Despite the line stretching back to the second signpost, we decided to brave the crowd. Fortunately, the line moved fast, and we waited no more than 15 min. for service. We ordered the following: Waffle cone with one scoop of chocolate thunder and peanut butter chocolate (me); bowl with single scoop of chocolate almond (CM); sugar cone with single scoop of chocolate almond (my dad), and sugar cone with single scoop of chocolate thunder (my mom). We were all very impressed with the quality of the ice cream, which had an extremely smooth and creamy texture, and with the flavors, which were delicious. My mom, who's a sucker for dark chocolate ice creams, liked the chocolate thunder so much that she said she wished she'd ordered a second scoop of it. For my part, I was impressed by its chocolateyness, and I was likewise impressed with the amount of peanut butter in the peanut butter chocolate ice cream. Both CM and my dad enjoyed the amount and texture of the almonds in the chocolate almond ice cream, which CM said were chopped into smaller pieces than the almonds he'd had at a local PGH ice cream parlor we visited together. Overall, we thought the ice cream at Woodside Farm was some of the best we'd had recently. For me, it's a toss-up between Woodside and UDairy--both produce excellent ice cream, but I'd say Woodside wins in terms of ambiance, whereas UDairy is more convenient to my parents' house. As others have mentioned, the setting couldn't be more perfect for an ice cream parlor--in addition to seeing the Jersey cows that produce the milk for the ice cream, we saw several playful lambs, one of which leaped as we were watching them while standing in line. If you're in the area, check this place out for some top-notch ice cream in an idyllic, pastoral setting!

Great price, we came here for a quite dessert after lunch. There was a small line, but we were still served quickly. Pricing is done by weight, but it'll end up being a little under $3 for one good sized scoop. The peach was okay, but there were other flavored that were a lot stronger. The raspberry was really good, as was the vanilla. The atmosphere was SO pleasant. Just a nice little farm with plenty of outdoor seating. The only downside might be the slight smell of cow manure, but what're you gonna do about that.

This is now my favorite ice cream joint in the world after today's experience. One banana split with scoops of cake batter, banana, and chocolate peanut butter ice cream topped with wet walnuts, crushed Oreos, and butterscotch with whipped cream and cherries was consumed today by me. That was at 2 pm. It's now 9pm as I write this. I still don't feel like eating. I'm still that full. I regret absolutely nothing.

Great ice cream. The visual farm is a great touch and the ice cream is very fresh everyone there is nice and treat your ice cream with care so you never get broken cones or liquid ice cream. This place is family friendly and has a decent amount of seating but the parking can be a little tight and the lines get long but it's very worth it

I came to this place for the first time three years ago when visiting Delaware, and I made sure to come back on this visit! This place has the BEST pumpkin ice cream ever! My friends and I all got the brownie sundae, and it was delicious, but I love the ice cream so much, that I think it's better eaten separately. Needless to say, I ate my cappuccino crunch & pumpkin ice cream first and the brownie afterwards. If you're ever in Delaware, come here! Get the pumpkin ice cream! Get the cappuccino crunch ice cream! Just do it!

  • Ariana Z.

Simply devine. Especially the bacon ice cream (because bacon duh). It's a nice subtle hint of bacon- the main ice cream is almost like vanilla but the chunky bits of bacon were a nice change change up. The bacon was still chewy and salty and savory as if it were straight from the frying pan. Everyone is so nice there and I love that they are local. They put on great events like ice cream eating contests, field games for kids, taste tests, and tours.

To be completely honest, I'm not a huge ice cream fan. Every once in a while I crave it, and end up realizing it's just ok. However, the ice cream at Woodside Creamery was the best and most delicious ice cream I have ever had! I got the cappuccino crunch on a sugar cone and loved every bite. My friends got cotton candy, coconut, motor oil & butter pecan on cake cones and everyone said their ice cream was amazing. I tried this ice cream on Memorial Day 2014, so the lines were a bit outrageous to say the least. And I will say the side window took FOREVER, to the point where I saw the main line cycle through twice before we got our ice cream. Even though I was extremely grumpy for waiting in line around forty minutes, I was immediately subdued by the amazingness of the ice cream. I am a state over in PA, but I will definitely return to Woodside Creamery. Even to just make a special trip there.

Visiting Woodside is a pilgrimage. Yes, it requires a leap of faith. After driving off the beaten path you begin to wonder whether such an ice cream stand exists out in the middle of nowhere. You begin to doubt yourself after passing countless residences without a single sign of retail civilization. Not even a gas station or a roadside market. But when you do arrive, you find flocks of families gathered around a single building. A line forms patiently as if it was communion awaiting the Eucharist. Is it worth it? Yes, it's well worth the drive. Maybe the facade of open pastures and cows tricks you into believing the hype. But it's definitely creamier and silkier here at Woodside. Maybe it's something that they put into the milk. Yeah, there's something about the milk. It's just better. Also, 55 cents an ounce? Sounds expensive when you have no concept of how much an ice cream cone actually weights. But when 3 scoops and a waffle cone comes up to be only $3.29, you realize just have much off a premium that you're paying for those other "premium" homemade ice creams elsewhere. $3.29 for all that? Simply unbelievable. 4 Stars - Yeah, I'd probably venture off the beaten path again for Woodside. [Original Visit: May 2014]

This is hands down my favorite ice cream place anywhere! So many flavors to pick from (though of course I have my favorites that I can't seem to step away from)... The only downfall is it is so popular that the line is usually at least 15 minutes long or more depending on what time you go. But it's worth it!

  • Erin D.

My favorite favorite favorite ice cream place in Delaware! They have a great array of flavors, and sell pre-packaged pints and quarts in most of them. You can always request a pint if they don't have it in the freezer. My personal favorite is Dirt (because I'm a big kid at heart!) with the oreos and gummy worms. You pay by the ounce, so maybe don't order 16 scoops on a waffle cone. I would suggest getting two complimenting flavors, like coconut and cappuccino! Also, they only accept cash (there is an ATM inside.) Be prepared for a line on nice days or holidays, and the interior is cramped. However, I wouldn't change this place for a big commercial ice cream shoppe; the rustic nature gives it charm.

Cute place to stop for ice cream next door to the farm where the cream comes from. The serving area is small and cramped and service is from teenagers. The ice cream is good but not stupendous. Open from 12 to 7 in the fall months.

Hard-serve ice cream sold in a quaint farm atmosphere. The ice cream is very good. I've had better but this is still great tasting ice cream. Really, you're paying for the atmosphere. It doesn't get much more relaxed and picturesque than this. Good sized portions of tasty ice cream in a country setting. You can't go wrong.

I'm a little disappointed. I have supported them for years but after reading some of the reviews I had questions. I contacted the farm on their facebook with this question: "Do you use a lot of artificial ingredients?" I was given this answer, "To answer your question our ice creams are not considered all natural, because some of the components used in the flavorings etc, are man-made. These are included for various reasons, to enhance the flavor and texture, longevity, or help protect the ice cream against temperature fluctuations." I asked what separated them from any other ice cream and asked why they couldn't try to go organic. I was told that my suggestions would go to the owners. I like this place; it's been family owned for generations and they work with other businesses. I just think for the future of the business going organic would be a nice way to go...or at least have some organic optional. It would be a good way to separate them from the rest and make a higher quality product.

I'm not a huge fan of sweets in general but if I'm craving something sweet and want ice cream I will be sure to go to this place. I love the story behind the creamery and love the ambiance. The ice cream is creamy and delicious. They also have a ton of flavor varieties.

This is down the street and around the corner from my house back in DE. I guess I'm a bit spoiled that I grew up so close to incredible ice cream. Woodside is a Hockessin staple that you just cannot pass up. Located roadside, it's kind of hard and easy to miss at the same time. There's a decent amount of gravel/grass parking, and there's tons of outdoor space to lounge about and enjoy your treats. A lot of bluegrass music groups like to congregate on nice days and hold jam sessions, which is pretty cool. Also, you can see the cows and goats that roam the farm just behind the ice cream shop. Now, the ice cream. Where do I begin? It's just so good. It's not ridiculously thick as some other boutique shops around the country, but it's not thin either. It's right in the middle with a good, amazing creaminess that you can only get from quality ingredients. They are also not overly-sweet, which some boutiques and chains can be. I've heard that the ice cream is not made on-site anymore, but it's still as good as it was. There are (hmm let me count) ... usually 25+ flavors that you can choose from. They have some flavors that rotate, and sometimes they'll surprise you with something new. They've also ventured into sorbet and have some sugar-free options as well. You can get pints and half gallons to-go, which is what I do whenever I make a trip back home. The service here is also genuinely small-town like Hockessin - you've got your local high school kids dishing up the treats in the shop. They sell by weight, so don't worry about getting more or less on your scoops. Anyway, there's only so much I can do to describe Woodside. It's the whole experience that just makes it. And the ice cream ain't too shabby either.

Delicious ice cream and good pastoral ambiance but my biggest pet peeve is them not taking credit cards. I rarely carry cash anymore and there isn't an ATM anywhere within close proximity so I often just ride right on by. Lots of good home made flavors but quit being so cheap and get into the 21st century. At the least make it $.57 an ounce. It's worth the hassle to pay a little extra.

Super creamy and flavorful ice cream. The setting is beautiful, I came here with my boo and we were in awe, we fell in love with this place. A nice drive from Wilmington to disconnect and enjoy a refreshing ice cream. My favorites are the banana and the cookies and cream, but also love the strawberry, coconut, thunder and cherry vanilla. Good quality ice cream

Just do it!

Woodside Creamery is within minutes from home, yet I've only been to this establishment twice. The first time I went, I had the peach flavor and thought it was just way too creamy. This ice cream is RICH. That small scoop of ice cream packs a punch. It's surprisingly filling. The second time around, had Cappuccino Crunch. Again, it's super creamy and rich, and sweet. I also happen to have Woodside ice cream at Longwood Gardens. Had one scoop of vanilla and one scoop of strawberry. The vanilla is probably my favorite so far since there's not as much additional sugar. They only have two sugar-free flavors. One is vanilla turtle, and the other black raspberry. My friend had the black raspberry. Even with no sugar added, the black raspberry tasted very sweet. The scenery is quite gorgeous of course. You have the cows mooing in the background while you enjoy a delicious scoop of ice cream. It's worth a try.

I'm up for any food that is homemade and local with natural ingredients and I will pay premium price for it. I was really disappointed when I found out that Woodside use high fructose corn syrup as the sweetener instead of sugar! Whether the controversy that high fructose corn syrup is worse for you than sugar is true or not, HFCS is definitely cheaper and found in many commercially processed foods I try to avoid. Even in the ice cream aisle in the grocery store, the cheap $2/half gallon ice creams (e.g Friendly's, store brand, etc) are sweetened with HFCS. More expensive premium brands are sweetened with sugar (Breyer's, Haagen Daz, etc). With that said, I cannot justify paying premium prices for Woodside's ice cream when it is made with HFCS. Ultimately, I have an real issue with the false image that this company puts up. They have you thinking that since their store front is located on a nice little pasture in Hockessin--sometimes even with a picturesque cow grazing in the field nearby--that their ice cream is made with wholesome ingredients but in reality they add artificial ingredients and high fructose corn syrup to cut costs. I'm beginning to wonder where the ice cream is even made. Do they ship it off to a out of state facility like UDairy does? The ice cream tastes good, but really I haven't had ice cream that I didn't like (I'm a sucker for ice cream). I just don't like how I'm paying for the image that this ice cream shop is local, homemade, or even small business. I'm not giving this place a completely awful 1-star review because I do the farm setting where the store is located is indeed charming and quaint. It is a nice place to hang out with friends. Other ice cream shops do not have such a nice view with picnic tables where you can sit and chat. Come here for the experience but don't buy the overpriced pints or quarts to take home with you! If you want all natural, local ice cream, you're better off going to an upscale grocery store.

The reviews for this place are funny. What are we rating? The ice cream or the farm? I would give them 5 stars for keeping the farm looking nice and it being in one family for so long. And I would give them 5 stars for the ice cream if it was all natural and didn't contain all the ingredients to keep the ice cream smooth and extend its shelf life. And it isn't cheap ice cream so why it has a single $ is baffling. It is about the most expensive premium ice cream you could buy and costs about $5 for a small serving. So my rating averages out to 4 stars. 5 stars for the farm and 3 star for the ice cream which I would easily give 5 stars if they removed the antifreeze. It is a shame that they use their own cream from cows they treat so well and have such a friendly staff and then add all those unneeded ingredients. But if there were ice crystals in the ice cream people would complain that it isn't smooth enough, so in a way they have to add them, but it is a shame they can't make it all natural. People want the best of both worlds. I think of organic food like an apple. If it has chemicals, its bad. But if it has worms and doesn't look perfect, its bad and people won't buy it. But we are talking about ice cream, its not health food, so you will have problems from the fat before the small amount of chemicals cause any health problems. They are the same chemicals found in water ice. And I wish they would sell their own milk. I would be there way more often if they had something to offer besides ice cream, fudge, and cheese. But this is a nice, quiet place to take the kids and relax.

It's everything others have said. Great creamy fresh ice cream in a quaint picturesque outdoor atmosphere with live bluegrass music on Saturdays - it doesn't get better than this! The service from local high school students is quick and friendly and they go out of their way with free taste tests from their oh, 25 or more flavors to make their guests feel welcome. That being said, is their ice cream the greatest ever? That of course is debateable - if you look at the ingredients as others have pointed out, there's a lot of preservatives in there and it would appear it's more of a commercial nature than homemade right on site. I've been coming here since the late 90's and I think it was a bit more "homemade" back then. But you just can't expect any retail ice cream shop to match the stuff you'd crank out at home in your own hand cranked ice cream freezer with your own ingredients either! For those of you that really like ice cream, I highly suggest you try making your own the old fashioned way - it really can't be beat, my Scout troop will attest to that!

The parking was acceptable, as an owner of a Prius this is imperative. In a perfect world, a parking attendant would have been able to coordinate this situation for a more enjoyable experience. Furthermore Andrew is the highlighted employee, his favorite animal is the bald eagle, as a patriot myself this boosted this review from 4 to 5 stars. I was quickly disappointed that he was not present to speak on behalf of all the local Americans. When walking inside; my party was advised sternly by the local ice cream enforcement to shut the door behind us. Though it was a very comfortable 70 degrees outside we felt strongly that we needed to adhere to their strict "closed door" policy. After receiving a directive to swiftly remedy the doorway incident I became so wildly flustered and in my panic ordered a cup of birthday cake ice cream, though the ice cream was extremely satisfying I don't believe that series of events would have taken place in a dairy queen. We quickly exited the small ice cream dispensary where we were greeted by many other patrons whom were enjoying their tasty creamy treats when suddenly we notice several 'cow heads' in an adjacent building, while at first they weren't bothersome but as we indulged ourselves their eyes began to peer into ours silently judging our every move. At this point my stories of hospital visits and diabetes quickly side tracked and the quiet conversation moved towards the collage of bovine heads peering into our souls. As the uncomfortable reality kicked back in, my lactose intolerant friend and I finished our delicate frozen treats and decided that our creamery experience has reached its conclusion.

This is the creamiest, most decadent ice cream you will find. They have so many creative flavors, and even delicious no sugar added varieties. I was very pleased with my NSA Black Raspberry, though do watch out, some of the flavors are a bit too sweet for comfort. This was up there with some of the best ice cream I have ever tasted. The location is great too; families with kids would love watching the cows and eating their ice cream outside on the scenic farm.

Amazing, amazing, amazing. I love this local gem. The ice cream is outstanding! The outside seating area often has locals playing folk music. The best part is the cows roaming the pasture in the distance.

Best ice cream hands down. This place is the best. The ice cream flavors are always interesting and very tasty. Peanut Butter & Jelly is my favorite flavor. I recommend this place to everyone I know. Can't wait for summer!

AWESOME!!! This place is my new favorite place in DE for ice cream! I love it! They have so many ODD by delicious flavors that I had a hard time choosing! You can also take home pints! Its cash only, but there is an ATM machine for you to use if needed. You can also see the cows and sit outside on picnic tables. I would DEF recommend this place!! YAY!!

If you like ice cream you can't miss out on Woodside Farm. Fresh ice cream made of milk from cows on the farm. They have more flavors than you can imagine, and some you would never imagine.,, a great experience. Pn Saturdays they have live down home music to make the complete farm experience.

  • Asima S.

  • Andrea M.

Best. Ice cream.

Took the family, and everyone liked the ice cream. The bacon ice cream was one of the favorites. My youngest son loved the dirt (chocolate, oreo cookies and gummie worm) ice cream. We will def come back...

Lauren B. did a fantastic write-up of our shared experience at Woodside. Definitely worth the trip during the dog days of summer; even better as a road trip with rock star Yelpers.

this place is my favorite thing about visiting my parents in DE (besides visiting the parents, that is). if only it were possible to live on their black raspberry and peach (2 separate flavors) ice cream. i am gutted when they close shop for the off season (november thru mid-late march).

Just do it!

Delicious, delicious ice cream. Love the ambiance and can not wait for the weather to warm up so we can take bring our kids back. Cash only so come prepared!

Love this place. The best ice cream there is. All flavors are really delicious. However my all time favorite is Chocolate Thunder.

I'm not a huge fan of sweets in general but if I'm craving something sweet and want ice cream I will be sure to go to this place. I love the story behind the creamery and love the ambiance. The ice cream is creamy and delicious. They also have a ton of flavor varieties.

Best. Ice cream.

Lauren B. did a fantastic write-up of our shared experience at Woodside.
