I visited the Back Burner for the first time this week. I love the rustic, country atmosphere of the dining area! For my appetizer I ordered crab chowder, and for my entree the staff was extremely accommodating in allowing me to choose shrimp with the sides that normally accompany the salmon. Everything was delicious, especially the kale and pumpkin risotto (my new favorite combination!). In addition, the service was fantastic and we felt very welcome. I would love to make it back and try a few other things on the menu that caught my eye!

Visited with Nicole B because the tavern menu is 1/2 price from 3-6pm on Saturday. The bartender was not ready and busy, but greeted us and told us she would be right with us. We were fine with that, we just don't like to be ignored. The 1/2 price tavern menu does not include drinks which were full price. $10 for Back Burner Lemonade which is limoncello and your choice of citron vodka, firefly, strawberry, or raspberry vodka. These were fantastic! I had strawberry and raspberry, and Nicole B had strawberry and firefly. We shared 6 appetizers, we should have stopped at 4. We ordered Shrimp Lejon, Crab Stuffed Mushrooms, Pork Belly and Duck Egg, Scallop Quinoa Salad, Garlic Clams, and Pretzels with Chipotle Cheese. We had to take some of it home. The shrimp were fantastic, large and wrapped in bacon. The stuffed mushrooms were delicious. Nicole ate the clams and said they were good, and I ate the scallops which were ok, but too small. I can't believe I ate the pork belly, that is not my thing at all. I don't think I could eat it again but it was pretty tasty. The chipotle cheese was spicy and smoky, but we could not eat the pretzels because we were too full. We will definitely be back to try a few other items. We spent $40 on drinks but all that food only came to $30. We split the total so $35 each for all of that was definitely a huge bang for the buck!

Outstanding meal. We decided to share a bunch of the lite plates, which we really enjoyed. So much that we ordered a second pork belly! The beet salad was the only dish we would call...lackluster. all else was stellar.

My wife and I went here for the first time recently and we couldn't have been more pleased. We will definitely be returning. I got the peppercorn steak and she got a filet. We both enjoyed our entrees greatly. We don't go out terribly often so I really like it to be good when we do. Our server was superb as well. She sold the menu without pressuring us and suggested reasonable things that we ended up getting (such as desert with coffee). Some reviewers mentioned the ambience and while it is fairly odd it did not IMO distract from a very positive experience. I can't wait to go back!

We really enjoyed Back Burner. Ate here during Delaware Dines Out week. I had the pear soup, pork delmonico & bread pudding. The soup was very good, the pork great (!!!) and the bread pudding a bit dry and bland. Why can't anyone make a decent bread pudding? It is not so hard. The chief had bacon wrapped shrimp, duck ravioli and bread pudding. In the same order, good, fantastic and ok. She was literally swooning over the raviolis, but I could not get her home quickly enough (LOL). A really nice atmosphere and high quality food. Glad we dined here on the DDO special, b/c the everyday menu is fairly pricey.

Enjoyed a family dinner here to celebrate a sibling's graduation. First, let me qualify that I found this restaurant to offer, on balance, a very fine dining experience. I had a pork dish, and it was very good. Most in my party enjoyed their meals as well. That said, I found the decor and overall ambiance a bit out of tune with the menu items and their pricing. The restaurant channels a farmhouse-in-the-countryside look and feel: light, unstained wood paneling throughout; a lengthy menu focusing on organic and locally-prepared items. Yet it is priced as an upscale establishment, and features an extensive wine list and menu items with more commas then Zone. Fine, but in serving two masters - country home-cooking, upscale dining - it fails to please on both counts. Would be nice to see Back Burner discover a more singular identity. Either cater to its upscale pricing and menu items - and decorate with a darker, more refined ambiance, presenting the food in that light - or market to its countryside look and feel - and offer a simpler menu priced more moderately.

I really wanted to like the food we were served, I ordered some of my favorites. But lord, I couldn't get past the salt. Even stopped drinking the relatively good glass of house chardonnay I ordered and went straight to the agua. And lots of it. And I actually like salt and generally think it adds a lot to a meal. But not in the quantity used here. Completely ruined our meal both times we ate here recently, and made me wonder what they were trying to accomplish. And even though the place was pretty empty our waitress seemed harried and generally unwelcoming, like it was all too much for her. Now that House of William and Merry is open, it is our preferred fine dining restaurant in Hockessin.

Went here for a second visit for dinner and was not disappointed. Not sure if they have a brunch but I'm thumbs up for lunch and dinner here. I had an enjoyable, reasonably priced lunch here on my own, and on another visit had a fairly priced romantic dinner date. I mean, dinner is not cheap here but I'm shocked that you get exactly what you pay for, where, in a big city you would pay a lot more and probably get a lesser quality meal. I tried the pumpkin mushroom soup since that is what they're known for and it's definitely not just hype - it is that delicious. Even my date who is an accomplished gourmet cook raved about it. The mussels appetizer was good...I have to say the mussels at Jessop's Tavern are the best I've had thus far, but Back Burner mussels were tasty. The crab cake was good...but, really, the steak en croute is to die for and makes everything else just taste good by comparison. You need to get it en croute, which is wrapped in a light pastry with a touch of brie. I'm not sure the last time I've had such a perfectly cooked steak. My date and I shared all of our food and she wanted the steak cooked medium and I wanted it medium rare, and even though I let her have her way it was like the chef knew how to appease us both. The wine was also good and they have a great blackberry cocktail with mulled berries in it, which is the only way to go. I really hate when restaurants scrimp by using imitation syrups. I have to say The Back Burner really exceeded my expectations both times but I suppose if this is a place my mom used to go to all of the time when I was a kid and it's still in business and hopping there's a reason. I think it's fairly crazy to say that after living in Los Angeles for over 20 years I would actually travel to Delaware for food. But after trying several restaurants between Hockessin, Greenville and Wilmington I did not have a single bad meal in the bunch. In fact, they were all good or excellent and all of them I felt I got what I paid for and had excellent, friendly service. I suppose it's the different between getting your food locally and restaurants where the owner is involved in the restaurant and actually cares about the quality and customer experience over everything else. In LA they just care about getting rich and it shows in a lot of the overpriced lack luster restaurants. You honestly have to really dig to find great food there and then just stick with those. And paying a lot of money, unfortunately, most of the time does not guarantee you a great meal in LA. I'm not saying New Castle is the next food mecca but it's definitely a great place to enjoy good food.

Thanks to an article in Delaware Today featuring restaurants that source local ingredients, my husband and I decided to visit this little hidden gem for our third anniversary. Our first impression was that it was quiet, but a Tuesday night, decorated with a certain rustic charm (although I would dispose of the large amount of fake ivy and plastic grapes in flower boxes if I were the owner), and that the staff was very friendly. Our waitress was able to suggest a nice, fruity red to go with my meal, so I was quite content before the food even arrived. We both ordered the Surf and Turf, which seemed like a steal for $31. The filet was Medium instead of Medium Rare, but it was so delicious that we didn't care! The lobster was delicate, the spinach was rich and garlicky, and the truffled whipped potatoes were divine! We both sat in mostly silence, just savoring every bite. We definitely need to go back in order to sample more of their dishes, but the prices mean that we will have to go for another special occasion instead of a Wednesday when we don't want to cook. It's worth a visit!

This is absolutely the best dining experience I've ever had. To include: the best food, the best service, the best atmosphere, everything... I've always been satisfied after a trip to the Back Burner. Bravo!

A group of my neighbors & I chose to go to The Back Burner during Delaware's October Restaurant Week. We made reservations via Open Table for 5 of us. We were seated promptly but had to wait a considerable amount of time before receiving a drink menu (we asked 1x and recieved 1 drink menu; then asked a 2nd time and received a 2nd menu for the 5 of us). When the waitress finally came back to get our drink order, we decided to also place our meal order. We had been at the table for 30-35 minutes before receiving our drinks. The appetizer course came out fairly quickly but then we waited another 25 minutes for the meal (remember, this is for a restaurant week meal of set menu items). We had 3 tenderloin meals; 1 ravioli and 1 swordfish. Of the 3 tenderloins, 1 was missing the blue cheese stuffing completely which was disappointing. All of us commented how much "white space" was on the plate too - meaning the meals were very small. The swordfish came with an olive tapenade that was extremely salty. The restaurant was less than half full and after taking 2 hours to get a pre-fixe meal that was so-so, I don't think I'd make a return trip to The Back Burner.

Excellent place for a group party-and delicious food We had our annual Christmas Family party here and it was great. We had a separate room since there were almost 20 of us. It was set up well, enabling us to all talk together and yet not be crammed together. Service was very good. Food was excellent and we all felt like there were enough food choices that everyone found something they liked. And Back Burner also helped us surprise a relative with a 75th birthday cake!

This is our go to place for special occasions, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. And sometimes just for a nice lunch. Often has unusual items on the menu in addition to the standards great soup and mushroom appetizers. Food is well prepared, staff is attentive. One night we were there when the power went out and they lit candles and did the bills by hand. Only lunch that was ever average was an overcooked omelet, but that is the rare exception. The menu can be a bit pricey, but the quality is excellent and, as noted, often some very different choices. Farmhouse type atmosphere, but clean and well maintained. great choice for a special trip.

I think this place has an identity crisis or a split personality. On one hand it is a country type place, looks like an old barn, has country decor, etc. On the other, they strive to look like a fine dining establishment with fancy place settings, etc. It was an odd mix so going in, I had no idea what to expect. Our waitress and the service here was a bit slow for lunch time on a Saturday. It was not insanely packed so I am not really sure why. We sat at a table by the kitchen which is behind glass for all to see and they didn't look overwhelmed so I still can't figure out what took so long. Anyway - after a little wait (not so painful I would knock the rating to 2 stars) we received our first course - soup for most of us and a salad. Since The Back Burner claims that their mushroom pumpkin soup is their signature dish, I had to give it a try. Eh, it was good but not great, certainly not what I would call a "signature dish." For my main course, I ordered the omelet of the day - bacon, onion, red pepper and mozzarella cheese - an interesting combination. It came accompanied by some sort of cold rice salad that was in a word: disgusting. I moved it to the far corner of my plate and ate my omelet. It was well done, if not a bit dry but I don't mind my eggs like that. I would not have put those ingredients together myself and probably wouldn't order it again but it was good. A nice lunch option amongst sandwiches and entrees. While I probably won't find myself in this area of Delaware again or for a very long time, I wouldn't hesitate to go back to The Back Burner if I was. But if I know I am heading that way, I might consult Yelp for other suggestions around.

This place has charm a-go-go and is so conveniently situated near my parent's house. The pumpkin mushroom soup is a MUST; run, do not walk to it. My husband and I went on a date here recently and had their prix fixe for $30, it was freaking awesome, and a pants-splitting amount of food. We had our rehearsal dinner here before our wedding and we LOVED how accommodating they were. We love this place!

First of all, I like to comment on how beautiful the restaurant is! high ceiling, sophisticated country resort style, and a very homey atmosphere. However, food -- I thought was nothing special... I got the lobster tail and filet mignon combo. For me, it was lack of flavor in both... the meat of the lobster was too stiff, the steak tasted like a piece of coal.. On the other hand, I believe my boyfriend got the strip steak and I actually enjoyed that over mine because it had a little more meat flavor. Maybe it's because i'm used to complex flavors of new american style, my meal at back burner did not stand out among the other experiences at all. I was a little disappointed having it being fine dinning and all. we also got the pumpkin mushroom soup. A very nice starter indeed. Light on the tummy before the big meal. But still I don't think I can have too much of it. service was fantastic! Very friendly, helpful, and attentive. ambiance? typical delaware scene.. business casual for most people in expensive restaurants.. mostly the older crowd, so I felt like my boyfriend n I were the odd ones out with our t shirts and flip flops.. but the staff didn't judge! Their service attitude is certainly laudable.

A truly enjoyable experience. The Pumpkin Mushroom soup was excellent. Entrees well prepared and tasty. I was very pleased with our table next to the fireplace and last but not least our service was excellent. I have eaten in many restaurants and would rank this as one of the best.

I was there with a group of seven and everything was perfect. We ordered seven separate entries and all we're served as advertised and served hot. We were all happy to see that half sizes of most entries were offered and many of our group ordered them. Noise level was fine and, thank god, we were not seated near any small children.

Came here for the Sat half price tavern menu and ordered everything under the sun. We shared 6 appetizers between 2 of us. See pics from Sherry J. The amount of plates that took up half the bar was quite an embarrassment. We started with the lemonade drinks. They are lemoncello with lemonade and then you chose between iced tea, raspberry or strawberry vodka to put in it. They were fantastic but pricey at 10.00 a pop! Our 4 drinks were more than half the check! But they do get a 5! garlic clams-5-fantastic! scallop salad-4 due to mini scallops stuffed mushrooms-4-good but not wowed! pretzels-5-came out hot and soft like aunt annies and the cheese dipping sauce was spicy and very tasty. pork belly with duck egg-4-a little fatty but I guess that is what pork belly is. the combinations of flavors went really well together. shrimp wrapped I bacon-5-they were giant shrimp and cooked perfectly. also a nice little sauce on the side for dipping. They were better than I remember on my last visit. Maybe because they were half price? Too bad we were too full for dessert. The white chocolate raspberry cheese cake that passed by looked great! I would like to give a 4.5 but since not an option will go with 5 since the fact that the appetizers were half price can totally get me there! We will return Back Burner! You might have to expend the bar for our order next time!

My fiancee and I gave the Backburner another try last evening. I must say, I was absolutely floored by the service and food. It was truly an amazing experience. We found ourselves seated in a corner table that was near another couple, but felt like 1,000 miles away with the charm and ambience that the main dining room exudes. Its classic yet cozy at the same time. Candles are scattered throughout the dining room to give it a rustic charm. For the food, the salmon was moist and flaky to the touch of a fork, the salad with apples, cranberry, grilled brie cheese and duck was absolutely phenomenal. The flavors were so fresh and familiar, yet suprising and inventive. We finished the evening with a peanut butter and chocolate pie- just no words to really describe how delicious this desert truly is- what a topper to a delightful evening. Their wine list is quite extensive- I highly recommend checking out their menu. The Backburner really stepped up their game for our second visit- their wait staff and food are both confident and innovative. I highly recommend this gem hidden in the hills of Hockessin. A+

Had a delicious birthday dinner at back burner tonight. I had the shrimp was on which was delicious the corn and crab chowder which was good and I also had the fillet en crute. That was delicious as usual. My husband had the veal porterhouse and it was delicious. Our server was courteous and attentive, we had a great time! We will be back. The signature drink, the border was amazing! Light and sweet. Perfect with antipasti cheeses and meats before appetizers. Bravo Back Burner. This life time customer will be back.

Located a little off the beaten path, but offering a dinner menu with both traditional favorites and creative specials, all well executed and presented. (as others have said, the pumpkin-mushroom soup is excellent) My vegetarian entree was innovative *and* delicious. Props to the chef. Service was also very good -- our group of ten was expertly taken care of by a server who knew the menu well and coordinated all our courses, drinks, and requests flawlessly. The country kitchen decor seems incongruous with a modern menu and food that, in my opinion, could hold its own in LA, but that's a minor quibble and I didn't notice it after a few minutes. Highly recommended.

Very nice atmosphere with light jazz playing in the background. Our server was friendly and attentive. We enjoyed our dinner tremendously and especially the chef's attention to detail. We had the salmon, the rack of lamb for dinner and they were cooked perfectly.

Ok so I usually come here and everything is amazing, but today everything was off. First I came in with my family and the waiter was really nice and asked what we could get to drink immediately, but it was all downhill from there. We got no bread and butter until we had to ask for it 20 minutes after we placed our order and the waitress didn't even come over and we had to walk over to the bar to ask. As our appetizers came in we had no cocktail sauce for the oysters and again we had to get up and ask for it. Right before we got our main order our waitress came up to us and asked what one of us got cause she forgot to write it down?? We told her that we got fried chicken and as the orders came out it was a grilled chicken with fries. It tasted like they dropped it in the ocean and continued to add a pound of salt even after. We told them thy had gotten the order wrong. The shrimp and grits were ok, could've been better if it was less salty. I got the house burger and asked for lettuce tomato and onion on it but no mushrooms. The order came out with the patty bun and radish on it. We had to call her over and ask for lettuce tomato and onion for the third time and it only came out 15 minutes later along with the fried chicken. As we left no one even apologized and just acted as if everything was ok. Normally I would think of this as an excellent restaurant, but today everything was off. Overall, the service was slow, the food was extremely salty, our orders were forgotten and butchered...

Delware Dines Out is this week. Wanted to try the The Backburner for dinner. Three course meak for $35 pp. Why not. Taking my college kid out to dinner. The server was GREAT. Knew the menu and was very attentive. I ordered the pumpkin mushroom soup, braised beef short rib with apple cake for an ending. I also had a cocktail. The Patti Crusher. The pumpkin soup is the highlight here. This is all you need. Forget about the main course. This is it. The cocktail was also amazing!! Short ribs fell short, but the soup, drink, and warm bread made up for it. I will be going back just get the darn soup to go!!!!

Great crab cakes (gluten free, too)!! But the evening will ruined by our sourpuss waitress who "wasn't permitted" to bring bread to my friend until after we ordered our meal. It was 6pm - we were ravenous and she was completely unhelpful. I am gluten free and she knew very little about the gluten free offerings. She recommended a soup and I had to instruct her that it contained. gluten (which she then confirmed with the chef). I asked if the sauce had gluten. She "didn't think so." WTF??? Lady - I get sick if I eat gluten - could ya ASK your chef please?! My friend wanted decaf iced tea - which wasn't available. So she ordered decaf hot tea and a tall glass of ice. This did not sit well with grumpy who asked my friend if she "really wanted to go through this much trouble" [for iced tea]. Translation: it's too much trouble. Good thing the food is great. I'll go back for the crab cakes - but will go out of my way to be served by someone more accommodating. Or maybe stick with takeout. $120.00 dinner for two -but, apparently, extra for good service.

Fiance and I came here last week when visiting family. For a little place in Hockessin, DE, I wasn't expecting anything so delicious! I had the pork tenderloin with the vanilla fig port sauce. It was cooked perfectly and the broccoli rabe was delicious. Fiance had the Steak Frites. He said the steak was pretty good. We would return to try other things on the menu. Our server was a little over eager and I couldn't get into the rustic decor. Oh, and the dessert was delicious!

been here three times now....first off, the place is warm and inviting, with odd decorum. the staff is friendly and cheerful, we had Darlene, and she was conversational, and respectful, and very cheerful. which tells me that she may like her job. which in turn tells me that the place is managed with care. so props to the owner, who clearly trusts his/her staff to make correct decisions. secondly, the menu is amazing. so many eclectic choices, literally adjacent to favorites like sandwiches and steaks. the specials are always fresh and amazing, the prime rib on Thursdays is incredible. the menu and the freshness of the food tell me another thing: the owner has hired a courageous chef who is interested in new and exciting dishes. this tells me the chef likely feels empowered have fun with the food. so, being that my career has been in customer service and management, I feel from my observations that the back burner is properly managed, and is likely a fun place to work. also, the food is amazing.

I am surprised to see all these 4 and 5 star ratings. I don't know if you have to be drinking to enjoy their food but my experience today for dinner, was a let down. My mother and I decided to get dinner around 5pm. This was our first time here and I notified the staff and our waitress. Sometimes when you let a restaurant know it's your first time, they go over things with you more comprehensively and want to make your experience a positive one. We were seated in the main dining area, with no other customers; but there were several loud customers at the bar. Our waitress was named Britney, with blonde hair. She never told us about the specials, like I heard other waiters do when taking their customers' order. I mean it was our first time, you'd think she would have explained their specials of the night. My mom ordered the stuffed mushrooms and I had their house salad. She liked her mushrooms. I didn't really like the salad dressing, there was too much vinegar. The different flavors threw me off. This was the best part, so this place has different staff doing different things. Like the waitress doesn't bring you your food, someone else does and there are guys around refilling your water. Well when we got our food, the waitress comes over almost immediately and asks, "How does everything look?" How does it look? She should have waited a couple minutes and just asked how everything was. Who asks how something looks? I care about the taste. She wasn't really attentive and I had to search for her a couple times. It's not like they were busy, at all either. My mom ordered the crab cake and I ordered their turkey avocado sandwich. The crab cake was bland and came with this off putting aioli sauce. My sandwich was huge. I tried taking small bites but I would just get some turkey or a piece of tomato. In order to get the flavor of all the ingredients I had to shove my face into the sandwich, leaving my face a complete mess. It was ridiculous. I'm not even sure how good it was since I was trying to just get one bite with everything. Also, the avocado wasn't ripe and just kept popping out of the sandwich. The chips that came with them were oily and I did not eat the rest. The best thing on the plate, almost, was the pickle. After our experience there is nothing that makes me want to come back to this place. The only reason I didn't give it a 2 star rating is because it was clean and well decorated. It reminds me of Harry's Savoy Grill a little. In the way that I think it's over rated. For an atmosphere and the prices you would expect the food to be up to par as well. Like I said, reading the reviews, maybe you have to drink in order to enjoy the food.

We stopped here for lunch on a weekend. The decor is pleasant and the waitress was friendly and attentive. Good variety on the menu with daily specials on top. I opted to try the soup of the day, which was avocado soup. Bad choice-- it was super thick and heavy-- more like a dip. In fact, that's what we used it as with the fantastic crisp flatbread they serve. Crabcake sandwich was good and the shrimp and blueberry salad was an amazing combo with super tasty dressing. I think the food quality is good and fresh-- you can see right into the kitchen through a huge window. Wait staff seemed good for all tables, but was actually surprised by how many staff they had on the floor for 3-4 tables. We would return, but would be more cautious about what we order.

I grew up in this area but never appreciated what this restaurant had to offer. I've come back repeatedly each time I'm in town to visit and several thing stand out: -Pumpkin mushroom soup -Amazing thin well-seasoned lavash served in lieu of bread at lunchtime -Bourbon flight paired with my husband's entree including discovering the delicious Sortilege Maple Syrup & Canadian Whisky Liqueur -Crab tomato soup (so good we bought a pint next door to-go) -Better cheddar (an amazing cheese spread that you must serve when entertaining -- only available to-go next door)

I didn't understand the food. I ordered a chicken something, and I got this teeny mash that tasted of nothing at all. There was no salad with it, just this soggy mush. My husband was confused about his food as well. We were there to meet someone and upon their recommendation, but we left confused and unsatisfied.
