You won't be eating here for the comfort or ambience. This is a burger joint outpost in a deserted parking lot of the nearly-defunct Blue Hen Mall, the first Mall of Dover that has been superceded by Dover Mall and the casino shopping area. After BOA and Aetna pulled out of here, the place has been nearly a ghost town, but thankfully, there's Jakes, or you'd be eating burgers only from fast food, TGI Fridays or Applebees around here. Needless to say PLENTY OF PARKING. A whole empty mall parking lot full. The burgers are gloriously greasy, loose patties with a handmade look and the meat is supposedly never frozen. Don't ask me about pink slime. I know nothing, I tell you. NOTHING. The fries ARE GREAT. Yes. You have to have them. The onion rings? Not so much. In fact, they are hateful. But the fries and burgers are fine, the bun is excellent quality. They also have milkshakes of all kinds of flavors with a special of the month, but I find them overly sweet. They do have a baby sized one so you can be somewhat REALLY naughty (burger, fries and a shake--why does no one make a Lipitor Milkshake? It would sell pretty well, I think.) A few quibbles; the onions are not great. I like a thin slice of red onion, not chopped onion. The fried onions are no better. Skip the onions. If you are a guy, you want the double burger--these aren't all that big. And the "ambience"--you'll be eating at long, narrow formica-topped counters elbow-to-elbow with strangers, or at a few tables and the decor is utterly utilitarian; think the inside of a submarine or a prison cafeteria and you will be about there. But it's usually crammed at lunch time. Sometimes you JUST WANT A FREAKIN' GOOD BURGER. And fries....so it's Jakes.

Horrible burgers, ok fries. I would give the shakes a 9 out of 10. Don't even know how they stayed open this long. them being next to the Blue Hen Mall, there is a restaurant in there I would rather eat at then go to Jakes. People can hate my review but I'm not going to give Jakes a good review because it's not a good place to eat It doesn't deserve a good review. There peanut butter and chocolate shake is so good if I could judge on that alone I would give it 5 stars.

I am not sure why I had not previously been to Jakes when visiting the Dover area. Jakes Wayback Burgers is the type of burger joint you can count on when you are just HUNGRY! The menu is varied with milkshakes, burgers, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, and salads. Don't go near the triple, triple burger! There is a monthly burger special. They have a milkshake of the monthly special as well, along with a variety of interesting shakes. Other menu items were tempting but one can only eat so much. I was delighted with the burger special and fries. The SWEET tea was plentiful and delicious (not overly common in the North) and I left with a full tummy and a smile on my face!

Just great burgers!!! Add anything you like, they taste like homemade burgers with all the fixins and grease!!! Lol must try! I will definitely be back to try a milkshake.

Good hamburgers. All though I liked the french fries they use to have. I am so glad they changed their bun back that sour dough one was nasty. The potato roll is so fresh and soft.

Full disclosure: I'm just in it for the french fries. I LOVE their french fries so much I usually buy an extra order to eat on the way home so that I won't be halfway through *his* french fries by the time I get there. We've been getting takeout from here once every month or two ever since they've been open. The food is good, the service is friendly, and on the very few occasions that something didn't go quite right, if I mentioned it, they went above and beyond to make it right. Case in point: this visit, my husband called to order while I was out running errands. He got put on hold, got tired of waiting, and hung up. He tried again right away and the same thing happened again. By the time he got around to calling me to tell me he'd never gotten through, I was already almost there and had my heart set on Jake's for dinner. I assume it was the manager I spoke to at the register when I walked in to place our order. He knew exactly who I was talking about when I mentioned the two phone calls, and immediately offered to take 10% off our order for the hassle, then explained that he'd had a huge internet order (2 pages long!) come in and as he was in the midst of entering that, he had two walk-in customers come in to also place orders. In the midst of that, my husband called. So I got my food, and it was great as always, only 10% cheaper than usual. And I learned that we can order online instead of over the phone, which suits me just fine. The ambiance is fast food (indoor and outdoor seating), but the food is better than you'd expect.

Jake's is a no frills burger joint. The burgers are fresh and tasty and the fries good. Perfect meal to shake off a night of partying.
