Like the food from BDs is now caught in a traffic jam in my intestines, Sonic has been in my backlog of reviews. And with any backlog, especially food babies, relief is sooooo good! I've been to several Sonic's out in Kansas City and while all the commercials were tempting, I never felt compelled to drive out to one. On the way to Rehoboth Beach my GPS took us on a rather odd route as the line of cars on 404 all turned left but we kept going straight. And then I saw it! SONIC!!! I then renamed it God's Positioning System b/c clearly God wanted me to eat at Sonic. My astute and loving wife rhetorically asked, "We're going here on the way back, huh?" Location/Service - I'm going to start with the location and service b/c if you've never been to a Sonic, you're probably going to be confused. There are several spots around the perimeter. Park in one, peruse the menu, and when you're ready, press the red button that has the note "Press This Button to Order." Come to think of it, that's not that confusing now is it? There's a credit card reader on the menu board or you can pay cash when they bring out your food. I went to one Sonic where the workers were on skates but they just walk here. They bring you your order and you eat in your car, and if you need something, just push the red button. Now this may sound convenient and fun, which it is in Kansas, but as they say, you're not in Kansas anymore. Gone are the friendly smiles when you request a BBQ sauce or more napkins. Instead, you now get a mild to severe rolling of the eyes; and I guess the employees need some floss b/c they kept sucking their teeth. In fact, it felt largely like a drive thru banking experience - good if the transaction is smooth but a pain if you need to make adjustments. And don't think you can go inside to pick something up for yourself either b/c there's nothing inside except tables. Speaking of the interior, it's pretty much the same setup but replace your car with standard fast food booths and instead of the red button, you have a red phone which makes you feel like you're using the Batphone. Food - We ordered the Sonic Cheeseburger, a grilled chicken wrap, a large order of tater tots, and a large strawberry lime slush (total: $10.58). The burger was rather plain as was the wrap. The tots had an odd texture to them ( yelp.com/biz_photos/PMiK… ), almost as if they were breaded and I probably should've gotten them covered in cheese. The strawberry lime slush though, was fantastic! After the rather unsatisfying meal, I decided to order Fried Ice Cream for dessert ($2.78) b/c like raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, fried and ice cream are a few of my favorite things. It was essentially their softserv ice cream (slightly better than McD's, not nearly as good as Chick-Fil-A's ice dream) with caramel sauce and what resembled little pieces if cinnamon toast crunch. So disappointing. All in all, Sonic in DE was a disappointing experience. So maybe it was just God's way of making sure I didn't drive out there just to eat. Ahhhh~ backlog relief: it's FAN-tastic!

So I've heard of Sonic, but never made it to one until today. For a fast food place, it's pretty great. Drive-in, which is a lot of fun, but this one even had a dining room for those who would prefer, as well as outdoor tables. Single bathrooms, which creates a bit of a wait, so not a good place if you're traveling with a big caravan. The drinks are awesome - totally recommend ordering a slushy or a shake or really anything. I got the "Ocean Water" - Sprite with Blue Coconut (coconut flavored syrup that's blue!). My description, that made my friend laugh until he tasted it and agreed, was "It tastes like suntan lotion! But in a delicious way."

After learning from Jim Cramer's Mad Money (due to stock price trending higher) that in 2011 Sonic switched to real dairy ice cream as opposed to corn oil sludge, we began stopping here for milkshakes on trips to the Delmarva beaches. Milkshakes are half-price from 8 pm until 11 pm close so quite the deal. Fast, friendly service by one of the employees on roller skates. Vanilla shake is well-blended and well-flavored. We like it enough that we haven't bothered with all the candy & syrup additions they offer. I asked one of the employees what brand of ice cream they use -- she cheerfully went to look at the 5 gallon cylinder -- and answer came back: "It says 'Sonic Ice Cream.'" If anyone knows who's supplying Sonic ice cream, would be curious. But at the volume they are selling, perhaps they have their own ice cream production? Not as rich or as pure-tasting as a Haagen Daz shake, but for the price it can't be beat. The menu beyond ice cream looks pretty unhealthful (haven't tried & don't plan to), but we were bemused that they mark all menu items below 450 calories as being a "Smart Sonic" item. Have had coffee shakes recently at Shake Shack & at Good Stuff Eatery in DC. Sonic holds up pretty well against those at a far lower price point.

Uh...did they forget how to make food. Super slow and unprofessional, but the food tasted as expected so it least they got that right.

Just plain nasty. This is the first time eating at Sonics and will be my last. First the person who took my order had a rude attitude when I asked questions about the menu. I ordered food from the dine in area and then went outside to sit since the inside was looking old and gross..(this should be my sign to leave). When I ordered my food I went to pay I was told they take payment once I get my food. This process made no sense especially when I see a register in front of me that can handle the transaction. I went outside to wait for my food which took a long time, about 20minutes. I got a burger and fries and it was not warm and tasted like crap. I was tempted to ask management for a refund but I was so hungry thast I decided to just eat it. Word of advice to anyone else do not come here!!! There are so many other options in the area that you should not waste a minute in this dump.

First time to Sonic, was inspired by the TV commercial. Not very impressed. First of all the service was slow, had to wait 30 minutes in the parking lot for the food to come. Really!! No napkins come with the Greasy food. No trash can around. Hello !! Are we suppose to leave the trash at the parking lots?

BMW navigation decided to route us through the scenic route on our way home from Ocean City, so we drove through Delaware. After miles and miles of farms, crops, and cows, we finally hit an intersection and I saw Sonic from afar. Since my boyfriend has never tried it, and I haven't had it in forever -- we just had to stop here! There's indoor and outdoor seating, but I wanted to get the full Sonic experience. We parked in a drive-in spot and explored the menu. When you're ready to order, you press the red button that says "Press Here to Order," and when you're done, you just slide your credit card and the food will arrive via a server on rollerblades in a few minutes! We ordered the chili cheese tots, french toast sticks, breakfast burrito, jalapeno poppers, and a peach limeade. Our food was good, but the only memorable thing were the chili cheese tots which were AMAZING... melted cheese and chili over tater tots, YES PLEASE. However, I also liked how there were so many different flavors for the limeades, slushes, and shakes. I wish there were more Sonics closer to us, but at least we now know where to go after Ocean City!

We stopped here on our way to Ocean City, MD. The exterior looked like an average Sonic. We decided to get our of the car and stretch out our legs from the road trip. We decided to dine inside the restaurant. The interior was poor. It was old and needed maintenance. Some of the leader on the booth benches were widely ripped with the insides exposed. Anyway, about the food. My husband got the Footlong Coney Dog. It didn't look like anything extraordinary. My husband said it was just okay. My adult son go to the Chicken Strip variety box that comes with chicken strips, tater tots, onion rings, and toast. When he opened the box, there was only ONE onion ring. He was so disappointed. I later asked him how he liked the chicken strip, and he said that he was so disappointed that he can't remember what he thought of the chicken strips. Well, obviously then, the Chicken Strips were not memorable (haha). He also had the chocolate oreo shake and said that it was pretty good.

I have been to Sonic many times in Florida; and was never disappointed. However, my visits to this location left a bad taste in my mouth. The Texas chicken club was fried to hard and the bacon tasted weird. The onion rings were fried to hard. My cherry limeade was missing or little fresh limes. It was my families first time there and now I feel bad that I made eat the food. The only thing that was good was the tater tots and the customer service. Ugh $23 wasted...!!!

This was my first time at a sonic after years about hearing how awesome they are. Meh, not bad, not great. Kinda neat to served by a lady on wheels. I liked the limeade and think it's an under represented drink. The cheese tots where not that good but the spicy chicken bites where. If there was one in DC might come here more but since there is not, probably won't be back.

Absolutely horrendous. Being from Texas, we have Sonics everywhere and they are always fast and delicious. Now living up in this area anytime I drive through the random towns that have a Sonic, I always have to stop. We stopped by here on a Sunday evening, and granted it was busy, but it took us an entire hour to get our food, and based upon everyone else standing around, this was not uncommon. After going in the door to check several times on what was going on (the kitchen looked absolutely disgusting, trash all over the floor) we finally got our food, half the order was wrong, no napkins or ketchup was included and the food was lukewarm at best. I understand a busy Sunday night taking a little longer but this was ridiculous. They said they were short staffed but looking in the kitchen area was at least 6-7 people back there, most of them standing around just staring at the trays of orders seemingly unsure of what to do. Very disorganized and will never be stopping at this location again.

Sonic, you temptress. You advertise to me and advertise to me even though there is not one in my area... and when I finally see one, I think it's christmas day. "OH YEAH! Sonic" So even though, I was not THAT hungry I decided to stop by and try a couple of things. Run through the drive through an Oreo shake and a hotdog. The Oreo shake was not blended enough which means that Oreos kept getting stuck in the straw, and because I was driving I could not eat it with a spoon. The hot dog was so basic and generally not special that I would never think to order it again. But why a two star review you ask? This "fast food" establishment took me 30 minutes to get food at. Yes, thirty freakin' minutes. I go through the drive through, which is going extremely slow, then after the drive through - they direct me to go to another line of cars and I waited in line here for about 20 minutes. All in all it took me thirty minutes to get my food. It was funny, I had a lead on my mother as we both were racing towards the beach. I thought, I run through this drive through and hop back on the road and retain my nice lead. No I completely lost it on this drive through. The woman who eventually served me my food gave me a heartfelt apology for everything taking so long, which was a nice gesture. But I was SO close to driving off without my food- I can even tell you. I kept saying to myself... any second now. It'll come out. It's takin' surely long enough... it's just a hotdog and a shake! They're not building a rocket ship.

This sonic is awful my food was strait disgusting and the employees were rude and screwed up my order. I used to stop here alot on my way to and from Baltimore but never again. I hope this place gets shut down or burns to the ground

This is a review of Sonic Hot Dogs regardless of location. I ordered two foot longs at the Bridgeville location. I like my Hot Dogs simple, a little mustard to complement a good quality hot dog. A good frank does not need to be dolled up with chili, onions, pickles, peppers and all the other crap that will stain up your clothes. The Dogs were long enough -- over 12 inches long at least. But the first indication of trouble was that they were very pale in color. That's the sign of a bad hot dog. A good hot dog has a bright red tone, indicating good quality meat. Being hungry, I ate my two dogs, but nothing registered in terms of being rich in flavor. It was a lamo dog. Sonic tots were good and Sonic shakes were good too.

I used to go out of my to visit Sonic's throughout the country since there aren't any near me. After visiting the DE sonics 6 times in the last 1 1/2 years they continue to serve me EXPIRED FOOD!!!! Yes, that's right. The kids meals offer sliced apples past the best buy date and the milk has been up to 3 WEEKS past the expiration date! This was during 2 different visits over the same weekend. Not sure if I'll ever visit sonic again. They offered me $10 if gift cards for the inconvenience. Make sure to check the dates, if I didn't my kids could have been really sick. Although this only causes concern for the burgers and other products that I can't check the expiration dates.

As we made our way home from Ocean City, we searched for a restaurant and a billboard for Sonic appeared. It was a mere 22 miles away, but the decision was made. I used to frequent Sonic when I lived in Louisiana, but they are few and far between in this area. We stopped in, ordered our food, and we were on our way. Service was great, food was how I remembered it, and I am ready for a Sonic to open in our town. I love the onion rings...the fries are pretty good also.

Solid Sonic. The location is a perfect -- halfway from DC area and the beaches. Great place to stop and get out and stretch and enjoy a coney and limeade.

I liked it! It was my first Sonic experience in a long time, and it was what we needed when we needed it. I got a Sonic cheeseburger, which actually wasn't too greasy. It was also pretty well put together - the bun wasn't smushed and the toppings were neatly distributed. Others got the Sonic breakfast burrito, which was CRAZY (complete with tater tots), and some frozen grape drink. The grape thing seriously tasted like a melted purple popsicle, which tasted good for a couple sips. They got our order correct, delivered it to us, and that was the extent of our experience with the staff. Our time and food choices were pretty limited, but we liked it in general!

$27. TWENTY SEVEN DOLLARS. 3 burgers 1 texas toast chicken club 4 orders of tots 1 mango limeade 1 cherry limeade 1 snicker's sonic blast 1 m&m's sonic blast The best part *aside from my cherry limeade* was Jeff screaming TWENTY SEVEN DOLLARS! And him repeatedly checking the receipt to see if we really ate/drank as much as we did for a mere $27. Man, I wish there were a Sonic closer to DC. I mean, where else do they serve you while on rollerskates without spilling?

  • Olivia D.

Location, location, location. This Sonic sits exactly on the road on the way to the beach... which is LIKE TOTALLY AWESOME. Nothing will kick start a beach vacay like a huge cherry limeade and some tator tots. Granted, I have to admit... the burgers suck. They're a grease fest without any notable features. Except grease. But my chicken sandwich was pretty good. And the tator tots were good. Plus, it is just fun to pull into a drive-in and have food come out by a rollerskating girl. This spot also has a playground. And did I mention the cherry limeade? I can't believe I'm only giving Sonic 3 stars, but I feel I must. For the food quality and also because the kid's meal toy was a ridiculous two pieces of plastic cogs with magnetized backs....ohhkaaayyy. Also, recently, I discovered that Minute Maid started making cherry limeade by the carton... and that it actually tastes pretty good and refreshing and similar to Sonic's. So now, I can easily get my cherry limeade fix via Shoppers Food Warehouse instead of driving out 2 hours.

If you're from DC you've probably seen all the ads for Sonic, but you've never been able to find one. Indeed, the closest one to the city is about 50 miles away and yet they still spend their advertising dollars in our area. But it must be working, because when I was driving to Bethany Beach and wanted a small meal, I decided to try out Sonic for the first time. You can either sit outside in your car and order drive-in style, or go inside. If you order inside you have to use this telephone to place your order, and a few minutes later a waitress comes out with your food and you pay her. The interior was clean enough for a fast food place, and the service was quick. I had the hot fudge shake, and the others who were with me had things like the peanut butter fudge shake and caramel shake. We all enjoyed our drinks, which were reasonably priced. We didn't order any food, but I caught some glimpses of other patrons' meals and they looked alright. This definitely wasn't as magical as I wanted it to be, but it worked!

  • Jeff W.

The selection and ability to customize all your beverages are what makes Sonic such a cool place. That, and the unique ordering method; simulating a drive-in even when you're eating inside. Upon first entering, it can be a bit intimidating, seeing a drive-thru window, drive-in curbside parking/ordering kiosks, and then inside seating with telephones. The menu is also tricky with all the drinks, desserts, and flavor add-ins available to you. Overall, food was about average to above average for a fast food place, though the tater tots were great. The burger wasn't that good though. The "real fruit slush" was the star of the show, however. Chunks of actual fruit, and a refreshing icy blend that wasn't too punch-you-in-the-face sweet. Well done Sonic! I think part of the appeal was/is how elusive Sonic is, what with their limited availability but nationwide ad campaigns. If there was a Sonic anywhere near me, I might be a bit indifferent, with the exception of the slushes but since this is a rare treat, I'll probably seek it out whenever my path happens to intersect with a Sonic.

I don't get Sonic. I just don't get it. I'm cheating a bit here, since I didn't even try their food. When I want fast food, I want FAST FOOD. Something better than McDonalds, preferrably (which is next door to this Sonic in Bridgeville, on the way to the DE beaches). I also don't like eating in my car. Cars are for driving. Not dining. So I went inside - I saw some folks sitting at tables that resembled fast food restaurant tables. But I didn't see the order counter. Hmmm...where could it be? Behind the ominous door on the left? Or in the back? I saw telephones at each table...apparently you're to dial a number to get service. This is what I don't get. This is too complicated for fast food. Keep in mind that I don't own a Blackberry or BluTooth as I find those devices too complicated too. So I walked out - and drove a few minutes to Subway, which I normally can't stand (I'm picky about my fast food.....) I wish Yelp had an "Incomplete" rating. I'd like to try one of their burgers, presuming I can order it "my way" (without too much junk on it). I've heard some compare Sonic to Five Guys. That got my attention. But the restaurant looked too complicated. Sigh. To quote Brian Wilson, maybe "I just wasn't made for these {technology-driven} times."
