Vanderwende Farm Creamery

Currently, my favorite ice cream of all time. Large portions, small prices, GREAT ice cream! Only thing is, I'm not revealing a secret here; the world IS beating a path to their door. Expect to wait in line to order, sometimes as long as 15 - 20 minutes. It's worth it, though! Small negative, there IS (or was) a loyalty (punch card) program but the last few times, they haven't had cards available. They also have a new store in Dewey Beach. Same ice cream, somewhat higher prices, no cows to thank outside the store.
There is absolutely nothing better. My fiance and I stopped in earlier today and both got milkshakes- coconut and the apple pie. Both were delicious! Always worth a stop on the way to the beach.
Vanderwende's ice cream is amazing! It's the perfect place to stop on a ride home from the beach. There are picnic tables and rocking chairs you can chill in while you enjoy your sweet treat. And there is a whole herd of happy cows that provide some nice farm-y background music. Heads up - the portions are massive. I got two scoops and couldn't finish it! But the flavors are so tasty and fresh that it's next to impossible to exercise self-control here. I recommend the cookies 'n cream. I had the cooke dough too, but it didn't have much dough in it. Btw - they accept credit cards! Hoorah!

Hands down best roadside food in Delaware. We absolutely loved it. We were driving through town and couldn't find any good places to eat but this place got good review so we checked it out. It was great! Really excellent pizza that we are all still raving about. We read the comment about racism...juries still out... We didn't hear anything but we were suspicious. Service wasn't super fast probably because they actually made the pizza. Unrelated hilarious religious paraphernalia in the bathroom.
My friend and I stopped here on our way back home from vacation. We were a little unsure about what we'd experience seeing as restaurants in shopping centers in the middle of nowhere can be hit or miss. This place is fantastic! We had a very attentive server despite it being lunch rush. My Dr. Pepper and my buddy's Pepsi had the right carbonation/syrup balance. Drinks came in styrofoam cups loaded with ice. We ordered a large, thin crust green pepper and sausage pizza and it was delicious! Sometimes pizza places make terrible pizza and this couldn't be farther from that. The cheese and sauce balanced each other while our toppings added the extra flavor we wanted. The thin crust was crisp and this was not a very greasy pizza at all. The price was reasonable and they topped our drinks off for the road. I will be stopping here again and would recommend it to anyone looking for some great pizza and service.
Home of the Original pizza twist! It's the best and locals have been enjoying them for years.

Jimmy's is probably one of my favorite places to eat in Delaware so far. This place has no frills...and really, it doesn't need any. I fled to Delaware for some fatherly TLC when a horrible cold smacked me in the face and proclaimed "I need comfort food and I need it NOW!" And my dad, who is a connoisseur of Delaware diners and down-home eateries, whisked me off to one of his favorites. Everything in here is homemade and delicious. I got the 4-vegetable (sides) platter and added a chicken breast and chicken wing. I got corn pudding, sweet potato souffle, macaroni and cheese, and stuffing. It was really hard for me to not eat everything right there in one sitting because HOLY CRAP THIS FOOD IS DELICIOUS. The fried chicken is absolutely delicious and perfect, which you can tell because about 6 different people came in and got it for carry-out in the 45 minutes we were there. I can tell because I put it in my mouth and it was the best fried chicken I've had since I lived in Maryland (Still hunting for Philly's best fried chicken if you have suggestions). The macaroni and cheese was closest to my mom's I've ever eaten: perfectly creamy with a toasted-cheese top. The stuffing and and sweet potato souffle were as good as any home cooked Thanksgiving side (my only sadness was there were no marshmallows on the souffle...but really, they didn't need them). I had never had corn pudding before so I don't have anything to compare it to...but I imagine this was probably some of the best corn pudding I will ever have: not too sweet and not too salty. I had a little bit of everything leftover (except the stuffing...too damn tasty) and all of the sides microwaved perfectly and were great the next day. The fried chicken was equally delicious, but I never microwave fried chicken since it loses some of the crunchiness. This place is simple and FAST. We were in and out in less than an hour but didn't feel rushed or unsatisfied in anyway. I will definitely be coming back to this place next time I'm in town...or next time a cold pops up.
Just had an early dinner and we were horribly disappointed with the food. My wife got chicken and I got a hot roast beef sandwich. My youngest daughter also got the roast beef. My oldest and a friend got cheeseburgers. The only meals that were decent were the burgers. My wife's chicken was extremely dry and hard. The breast was the size of a thigh, we actually had to ask and the waitress was unsure then said that it was a breast. The two hot roast beef dinners wee cold and tasted horrible. I am so tired of places that have had a following getting a break because their Daddy's daddy has been going there. The place was dirty and there were flies all over. We're never coming here again. I
This place has been a local staple & a tourist-on-the-way-to-the-MD-DEL beaches convenient stop-by for years.. Fried Chicken, sweet potatoe fries, the homemade pies and desserts. I heard the cleanliness of the restaurant has deteriorated & on the way back last week, received strong confirmation: NOT clean. A restaurant with appropriate double doors up front in summer should be able to handle it, but next to my table was a pole that a multiple of flies found attractive. Way too many flies in this restaurant to try to believe it was clean in the kitchen. My chicken salad sandwich had a couple of pieces that had be spit out too. We will go hungry & opt for Macs next time en route.

Sonic Drive In

Reviews:
Like the food from BDs is now caught in a traffic jam in my intestines, Sonic has been in my backlog of reviews. And with any backlog, especially food babies, relief is sooooo good! I've been to several Sonic's out in Kansas City and while all the commercials were tempting, I never felt compelled to drive out to one. On the way to Rehoboth Beach my GPS took us on a rather odd route as the line of cars on 404 all turned left but we kept going straight. And then I saw it! SONIC!!! I then renamed it God's Positioning System b/c clearly God wanted me to eat at Sonic. My astute and loving wife rhetorically asked, "We're going here on the way back, huh?" Location/Service - I'm going to start with the location and service b/c if you've never been to a Sonic, you're probably going to be confused. There are several spots around the perimeter. Park in one, peruse the menu, and when you're ready, press the red button that has the note "Press This Button to Order." Come to think of it, that's not that confusing now is it? There's a credit card reader on the menu board or you can pay cash when they bring out your food. I went to one Sonic where the workers were on skates but they just walk here. They bring you your order and you eat in your car, and if you need something, just push the red button. Now this may sound convenient and fun, which it is in Kansas, but as they say, you're not in Kansas anymore. Gone are the friendly smiles when you request a BBQ sauce or more napkins. Instead, you now get a mild to severe rolling of the eyes; and I guess the employees need some floss b/c they kept sucking their teeth. In fact, it felt largely like a drive thru banking experience - good if the transaction is smooth but a pain if you need to make adjustments. And don't think you can go inside to pick something up for yourself either b/c there's nothing inside except tables. Speaking of the interior, it's pretty much the same setup but replace your car with standard fast food booths and instead of the red button, you have a red phone which makes you feel like you're using the Batphone. Food - We ordered the Sonic Cheeseburger, a grilled chicken wrap, a large order of tater tots, and a large strawberry lime slush (total: $10.58). The burger was rather plain as was the wrap. The tots had an odd texture to them ( yelp.com/biz_photos/PMiK… ), almost as if they were breaded and I probably should've gotten them covered in cheese. The strawberry lime slush though, was fantastic! After the rather unsatisfying meal, I decided to order Fried Ice Cream for dessert ($2.78) b/c like raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, fried and ice cream are a few of my favorite things. It was essentially their softserv ice cream (slightly better than McD's, not nearly as good as Chick-Fil-A's ice dream) with caramel sauce and what resembled little pieces if cinnamon toast crunch. So disappointing. All in all, Sonic in DE was a disappointing experience. So maybe it was just God's way of making sure I didn't drive out there just to eat. Ahhhh~ backlog relief: it's FAN-tastic!
So I've heard of Sonic, but never made it to one until today. For a fast food place, it's pretty great. Drive-in, which is a lot of fun, but this one even had a dining room for those who would prefer, as well as outdoor tables. Single bathrooms, which creates a bit of a wait, so not a good place if you're traveling with a big caravan. The drinks are awesome - totally recommend ordering a slushy or a shake or really anything. I got the "Ocean Water" - Sprite with Blue Coconut (coconut flavored syrup that's blue!). My description, that made my friend laugh until he tasted it and agreed, was "It tastes like suntan lotion! But in a delicious way."
After learning from Jim Cramer's Mad Money (due to stock price trending higher) that in 2011 Sonic switched to real dairy ice cream as opposed to corn oil sludge, we began stopping here for milkshakes on trips to the Delmarva beaches. Milkshakes are half-price from 8 pm until 11 pm close so quite the deal. Fast, friendly service by one of the employees on roller skates. Vanilla shake is well-blended and well-flavored. We like it enough that we haven't bothered with all the candy & syrup additions they offer. I asked one of the employees what brand of ice cream they use -- she cheerfully went to look at the 5 gallon cylinder -- and answer came back: "It says 'Sonic Ice Cream.'" If anyone knows who's supplying Sonic ice cream, would be curious. But at the volume they are selling, perhaps they have their own ice cream production? Not as rich or as pure-tasting as a Haagen Daz shake, but for the price it can't be beat. The menu beyond ice cream looks pretty unhealthful (haven't tried & don't plan to), but we were bemused that they mark all menu items below 450 calories as being a "Smart Sonic" item. Have had coffee shakes recently at Shake Shack & at Good Stuff Eatery in DC. Sonic holds up pretty well against those at a far lower price point.

Would love to actually be able to review the food. .Although the open sign was on. . Lights were on and hours posted. .. they had a nice scribbled note up stating they'd be back in 30 minutes. . But they didn't bother to put the time on their note. . So were they already gone for 25 minutes or just 2? Certainly wasn't worth the wait and the VERY LEAST they could have done when they left was to turn off the lights and the open sign so I didn't have to waste my time getting a toddler out of a car seat and immediately have to put her back in. I watched two other parties walk up and turn around as well. This happened at DINNER TIME! Makes no sense.
