I hadn't had Chinese food in about five years, but after coming from a tattoo session, my adrenaline was telling me that I needed food and I needed it NOW. Luckily, my friend had visited this spot weekly while back in college, so he knew the place to get your fix. The place was completely empty just before 2pm and the owner was sitting at a table reading the newspaper when we came in. She made friendly conversation with my friend who used to be a regular as she showed us to a table. Not ten seconds after seating us at a booth, she returned with water and tea. Now, I'd only had Chinese take-out before, so this was new to me. She gave us our menus and left momentarily. As placemats, there were paper Chinese zodiac thingamajigs and my friend and I had fun finding our animal, matching it to our personalities, and matching up other people we knew. In no time the owner returned asking what type of soup we wanted (I believe there's three or four choices and I had completely spaced the fact that we had to order so I gabbled out something like, "Er, hot--wonton, yeah." There were two chewy wontons floating in the broth, which tasted like chicken noodle broth and I slurped it up while finishing reading the calendar. I'm a sucker for sesame chicken (though I wouldn't say no to orange), so I ordered a massive plate of the stuff plus steamed rice and took to it with the appetite of someone facing a ten-year famine. Maybe it was because I hadn't indulged in Chinese food in so long, but it was all absolutely delicious and filling. Since we were the only ones in the restaurant, the owner came back to check on us often enough while sitting nearby, chatting with a waitress. A fortune cookie apiece ended the meal, which came out to around $14 for two. (~$6.99 per meal from 1-3, I think), and we tipped generously. I can't say what this place is like during busy hours as far as noise and service, but it was amazing while we were there with modern music playing, but not too loudly. No complaints whatsoever, and I'm already planning to take my little brother there since he, being allergic to nuts, has just recently discovered that he CAN eat peanut oil and has found that he loves Chinese food.

Ssshhh. I shouldn't be writing this. Li, the owner and wife of the chef, told us she didn't want to make a big deal of this place - it was just her little restaurant. But oh, man, the food is good. We have eaten there tens of times. It is by far our favorite Chinese restaurant by far around here, an area quite well-supplied with them. Order *anything* with beef. Seriously. Don't think, just do it. You will be astonished at its flavor and tenderness. Just wonderful. Also order anything with shrimp. They are always large, firm, and flavorful. The twice-cooked pork is the best I've had in about 20 years; I'd given up, frankly. Fair warning: a bit on the spicy side. All the dishes have character and their own flavor; I've been to too many that just slather generic brown sauce on everything. This is not the case here. Dishes we've had and I can recommend, in no particular order: Beef & vegetables or broccoli; Mongolian beef; House Casserole (chicken, beef, shrimp, tofu, veggies in a stoneware crock); shrimp & veggies or snow peas; twice-cooked pork; eggplant in garlic sauce; Buddha's Delight (veggies). And others; that's all I can recall right now. We don't do the dishes that are over-the-top americanized, like fried wontons stuffed with cheese (cheese?! in Chinese food?!), or the family dinners with columns A & B. So, no opinion there. They have them. I'd really like to check out the seafood dishes more, since the chef's bio on every table says he studied in a specifically seafood culinary school in China. Unfortunately, my usual dining partners aren't adventurous enough. Also, I'm afraid I have to say you should avoid the mu-shi pork (kind of like Chinese tamales). They were astonishingly flavorless, a severe surprise. They also do delivery. Eh, things seem to come out a little more spotty then; not sure why. It's OK, but that's all; not as good as when you're sitting there. Not sure why that is. Aaaand... you get macaroons for dessert, just before the fortune cookies

This place has the best food and service!! It's a little out if the way, but I would rather drive a little out of my way than get spotty service and dull food somewhere else. One woman there actually took time out if her busy day to teach my son how to use chopsticks!!! Wonderful family atmosphere with delicious food!! You can't go wrong!!

I absolutely love this place...best chinese food in Westminster. Lo Mein is just superbly refreshing and delicious. My only complaint is that they won't give you one of their gourmet cookies if you pick-up your food, even if you ask politely. They will tell you it's for dine in only! other than that awesome food.

Order: Beef Broccoli ,General Tso's Chicken, Crab Wonton & Vegetarian Egg Rolls The Good, The egg rolls were absolutely awesome. Simply amazing. Somewhat small, but who cares if they are good! The meh: Beef broccoli - Beef was sub par, the dish had an overall fake meat flavoring to it. General Tso's Chicken - Had a piece of chicken that had a bone in it. The dish wasn't bad, but overall didn't have much flavor to it. Chicken wasn't the best. Crab Wonton - Right from the freezer to the fryer. Wasn't very good. Service was nice, was prompt and dining experience was good.

This is a place where hot means Hot - in terms of heat level in spices and how hot the food is. Which is a great thing. We went here for lunch as we were in the neighborhood. I was a little skeptical to order shrimp and sea food - but the owner assured me that it was all fresh. I am glad I took the advice. It was delightfully fresh and very tasty. The prices are great for the meals and the place clean. If I am in the area, i might go back !

The inside of the restaurant was nice, it transports you away from the stripmall just right outside. My friend and I had a quiet lunch inside which was perfect for catching up. My friend also liked the food--maybe her first time getting the Happy Family. I can't remember which fish dish I got, but the batter wasn't too battery leaving it moist and the fish was tender.

I'm confused. The meal I got delivered wasn't good. Usually I'd think, "maybe it was a bad day, so I'll try it again." But even with all the positive reviews here, I really don't want to try it again. The lady on the phone and the guy who delivered my food seemed very nice, so I'm sad to be writing such a poor review. Orange chicken: unpleasant texture (fatty and yet tough at the same time) and synthetic orange flavor. I really couldn't eat more than a couple bites. "Crab cheese wonton": I pretty much ate these as my meal. However, there was absolutely no crab (or imitation krab) present. Not a fleck. Just take the word "crab" out. Vegetable lo mein: okay Sorry guys...

I am a Chinese food addict. The first time I went to Li's in 2008 I didn't know what to expect. The outside in a strip mall...Well we all know that some of the best places to go don't put crazy efforts in exterior appearance. When I went in Li greeted me with a smile and seated me. I read the card about the chef and my eyebrows raised when I saw his background. I ordered the Jin Jiang Pork. When Li brought me my soup "hot and sour" it was perfect. Then she served my entrée shortly afterwards. When I saw the presentation my eyes lit up and when I took my first bite, my perspective about what truly great Chinese Cuisine is, changed. I think judging Chinese food based off of carry out is difficult because .. Well it's smashed in White Boxes and Tupperware like plastics. Go in person and meet Li and sit down for while. You will then understand why I choose to eat here over any other Chinese Restaurant when possible.

Our first dinner at Li's and it was WONDERFUL. We really felt bad because we could not eat more and ended up taking home enough for another meal - not as good as at the restaurant, but still very satisfying. Sesame chick is beyond belief. We will return soon!

This restraunt was recommended by a co-worker of my husbands and I am happy to say it absolutely lived up to my expectations (actually higher ). I am not a lover of Chinese take out, but my husband loved Chinese food, since we have kids and rarely go out, take out occasionally is our comprise. I truly loved my dinner tonight. The food was obviously fresh and cooked well, and not the soggy over seasoned mess I have had the unfortunate occasion of having at so many other places. I love that they are no MSG and they toute a healthier menu. They even were willing to make an item for my husband not on the menu next time. I would highly recommend here and I know we will eat here again. I am very happy to find a yummy new place to eat!!!

  • Mark H.

We live less than a mile away, and had never eaten at Li's.....that was a big mistake on our part! A friend recommended them, and we have done take-out twice in the last two weeks - Outstanding food, and a friendly service! I highly recommend the Shrimp with Lobster Sauce, and my daughter recommends the Orange Beef! Don't let the fact they are located in a strip mall scare you off - the inside of the restaurant is neat, clean and attractive. There was a group of 13 eating there last time we went to pick up our food, so they can easily handle large groups as well as parties of one.

oooh yummy, for Delivery that is, I can't give it a 5 star because it's not the best Chinese food I've had, but I do have to say for the fast delivery service and delicious quick food it's worth a 4 star for sure! Crab wontons - pretty good Pork Low Mein - Now this was the Best I've had for chinese delivery for SURE! Crispy beef - pretty good and good portion Shrimp w/ Lobster Sauce - it was good, but a bit salty. I like it salty, but I think today my budds weren't ready for it. Overall I would order from this place as one of my top 3 delivery places from now on and the price is low and not expensive. If I'm craving Lo Mein than this is the place I'm calling first on my list. :-)

The best part of our Chinese dinner was the cheap roll up calendar that my 3 year old loved. The food took an hour to deliver on a Tuesday, and they are barely a block from the house. They said 35-45 mins. The wonton soup was so salty no one could eat it. After very specifically asking for an adequate number of fortune cookies, we got 2 for a family of 5. The actual main courses got the 2 stars because we could actually eat them, unlike the soup.

  • angela p.

You people that rated this place 4 and 5 stars are out if your mind!!! The food is horrible!!! Sesame chicken unedible...tasted like old fried chicken refried and tossed in sauce. Chow mein was overly salty and fried rice plain as can be. Just another Chinese restaurant in a strip mall.

You get what you pay for most of the time when it comes to mom and pop Chinese food restaurants. This place serves a lunch special with the entree, rice, and soup for $6.95... Cheaper than most fast food combo meals... Needless to say it was NOT very good. Great value if you're on a budget though!

The best Chinese restaurant in the area. The food is made fresh and is delicious. Li is always so friendly. We love going out to eat there. There are two Chinese restaurants closer to our house, and they are okay, but Li's is well with the extra effort.

I swung into this easily overlooked Chinese restaurant for a quick weekday dinner. For $5.70 (including tax), you can choose from over a dozen lunch meals that include soup, an egg role, and steamed ice. Egg foo young is the Chinese standard by which I measure a new restaurant, and I was not disappointed. While not as crispy as I prefer, the flavor was marvelous and it was piled high with fresh veggies, including carrots, broccoli, celery, mushrooms, onions, and cabbage. Sweet sweet love. To boot, my wonton soup and egg role were also excellent. I'll be back, especially with such a bargain at lunch.

Ordered there for the first time last week. Had Mongolian Beef, Hot & Sour soup, and rice. The best part was the rice. The soup was starchy, tart, and unseasoned. I threw it away after the first bite. The Mongolian beef really should have been listed as Mongolian greasy onions. The beef that was in there was bland, stringy, and chewy. No flavor at all, nor any spice. Very disappoint that the plates are $10 a piece and do not include soup or an egg roll. I'm happy to spend that on good Chinese food, but $10 for poor quality food plus an additional $2 for terrible soup and a good egg roll is too much. The quality is equal to what you'd expect at a 5.95/plate restaurant. My fiancee had the low mien and wonton soup, which weren't much of an upgrade. First and last visit. Oh, and perhaps the molding oranges in the display and the coy tank that looks like it hadn't been cleaned in a year probably should've been my first indication.

Wonderful food and service. We loved our food....House Special Fish was perfectly steamed with an excellent ginger sauce and crisp tender broccoli. The moo shoo shrimp was delicious. Our waitress was professional and gracious and the prices were very reasonable. If we are traveling that way again, we'll make a point of eating there.

Delish Chinese food. I have never ordered something I don't like there. Was quoted 30-40 min delivery and food showed up Within 15 minutes. Great business!

  • Nick R.

A little hard to find tucked away in a strip mall, but worth the effort. Some of the best house fried rice I've ever had. Huge pieces of shrimp! Service was fast and friendly. We'll go back the next time we're in town.

  • Vin F.

Good egg drop soup, good hot and sour soup. Rest of food was "average". Basically a "mom and pop" restaurant in a strip center. A neighborhood place you might drop into for a meal when you don't want to drive far, or aren't looking for an exceptional meal. They seemed to be doing a great delivery service.

It seems my quest to find a favorite Chinese restaurant is going to be a long one. When my boyfriend and I got here, there was one person waiting for take-out and nobody in the dining area. After sitting down we realized that it was SUPER quiet. The only noise in the whole place was the buzz of the fridge in the corner, there was not even music playing lightly. The waitress was very polite and prompt. She even told my boyfriend "The sesame chicken is spicy, is that okay?" We had delightful jasmine green tea as we waited for our food, and as a few more groups came in it wasn't quite so eerily quiet. What our waitress didn't say was that the LO MEIN was spicy, as well. The reason I like lo mein is because it is generally mild. I like mild. Maybe I have a boring palette but I'm okay with that. When the food came out it was very hot (temperature-wise) so at first it tasted fine, but after it cooled down I noticed that it was quite spicy. I had to take a sip of water or green tea after every bite. My boyfriend didn't mind the "spicy"-ness of his sesame chicken (he said it wasn't really that spicy but this is someone who eats green chili on everything so I don't know), but what he didn't like about his was that it was a mixture of light and dark meat. The check did come with delightful little coconut cookies, as well as fortune cookies (boyfriend and I got the same fortune, haha), but it could not make up for the rest of our meal. And so our search continues...

great food at a great price! You have to ask for the house fish with ginger sauce or the off the menu item guo bao chicken, best stuff on the menu!

I go to Li's on a regular basis. Either for take out or to eat in. They have fresh food - not leftovers like some Chinese places. The people are very nice and the food is affordable.

We are new to the neighborhood and thought we would give it a try. It was not crowded, but had a steady stream of customers. My husband tried the garlic triple delight and I had the walnut shrimp part of the family dinner that comes with an egg roll, cream cheese won-ton, and chicken wing, and soup. Our little girl had the fried shrimp. The soup, and egg roll were fresh and hot. I'm not a fan of cream cheese won tons but my husband and daughter gobbled them up. The chicken wings were okay but not great. The food was pretty good. The highlight of the eating at Li's was Li herself. She was very friendly and had a great sense of humor. We will definitely be back! Great customer service.

Can you say: 2 for 1 beer? Geez what a deal! Friday, Saturday, and Sunday specials are great and we didn't even know it when we decided to try it out. My hubby ordered a beer and when she said, "2-for-1" I saw his face brighten really fast. Their special also includes imported beer - so we basically paid $1.75 per beer. Love it! This is a hidden gem in this shopping strip mall. We ordered their dinner special (choice B) for $11.50 (or something like that) per person. I wasn't impressed with their soy-based wonton soup. It had no veggies and the broth wasn't clear like 99% of other wonton soups. Regardless, the appetizers (all deep-fried, yum!) and dinner plates were very good. Serves was outstanding... She knew just when to approach the table and when to leave us alone. I like that in a server! Go try them out folks!

Usually Yelp does not serve me wrong - but boy did they on this place. I wanted some chinese delivery and being new to the delivery area trusted yelp to recommend a great place. The food arrived promptly which is always nice. HOWEVER, the only edible thing was the spring rolls. We ordered the general tso's chicken and bbq pork chow mein as well. Barf!

To really simplify things, there are basically Americanized Chinese restaurants and more authentic Chinese restaurants. Li's is more of the former. Which is not really a bad thing! At Li's you get all of the Chinese dishes that you can get at any standard Chinese restaurant but Li's always appears to be prepared a little fresher and tastes a little better. Li's does have a few menu items which aren't on the menus of other Chinese restaurants so you have an option of ordering something other than the standard dishes. But as far as standard Chinese restaurants, whenever I have a craving for this sort of food Li's is the only place we go! Oh, the service has always been great!

I agree with the others who say this is a hidden find. We were warmly greeted when we came in on a Saturday around 6:30 PM and promptly seated. I tried a Tsing Tsing beer and it was pretty decent. When we went the restaurant was having a 2 for 1 special on beers (I think from 4-7 or so). We ordered one of those "family style" meals for 2 and everything was hot and fresh. Impressive, and sadly the first time I found this to be the case in any area Chinese restaurant. This is one of the few Chinese restaurants I have found that actually knows how to prepare Sesame Chicken like I remember it. The chicken was whole and not fatty and greasy. I didn't have a problem with the rice even on the basic steamed white version. For around $31 for 2 people we walked out with take home and had two beers. Not a bad deal. Definitely a hidden strip mall find.

  • Sara S.

I love, love, love this place! The food has never been a disappointment, and I can't believe I'm writing my first review for this...I've been here over 20 times. As with any Chinese restaurant, for the best deal, get the lunch special. Entree, soup, egg roll, and choice of rice all for around 6 bucks. Can't beat it! The lo mein is amazing, and the sesame chicken are highlights here. They also know my family by name, we go there so much. haha

  • Heidi S.

This is a little strip mall Chinese joint, just picture the scene from "A Christmas Story" and you get the picture. It was OK, the hot and sour soup was neither hot nor sour but it is exactly what you would expect. It is what it is where it is and serves it's purpose quite nicely.

I usually get take out every Friday nite after work from Li's. I get the kung pao triple delight. Customer service here is great! Always a smile and friendly - not like some Chinese restaurants I've been to. I want to try the house fish someday.

Li's is our favorite chinese restaurant in the area. Service is always excellent and the food is great!!! The owner is very nice and friendly. We always order the Shrimp Low Mein, Chicken Fried Rice and something different for our 3rd plate.

Great mom and pop restruant! Great service, GREAT food (lost of flavor). They could use some new furniture, but that is the worst anyone could say about them!!

  • Bundy R.

ordered s combo lomein and crab cheese wontons... Man was I disappointed... The lomein was the same quality as the $1 scoop ho ho's... And the wontons didn't even have the imitation crab meat... The delivery guy couldn't find my address and I live up the street... So horrible, it was hilarious... Over all, not as good as I thought it would be,from reading some of their reviews... However, this was my first time and I might have just caught them on a bad night, so I'll give it one more yet try and we'll see how it goes... Every one deserves a 2nd chance, so I'm gonna continue this later...

This place is good. Its average in my book. Had delivery, so not too sure about the atmosphere. The food was pretty good. I've had way better mongolian beef at many other places. The Moo Goo Gai Pan was a little bit above average. The Hot n' Sour soup was below average. I would definately go back someday, and especially for the happy hour 2 for 1 - Yes please!

  • Shanah Z.

I recently tried this place and thought it was pretty good. We decided to pick up the order instead of delivery. The hostess seemed to be a little preoccupied with her phone conversation, that was not an order, and took her time getting off of the phone. That was slightly annoying. I decided to order the Sesame Chicken. It was delicious and I love their sauce. Yum. I'm also a fan of their Crabmeat Cheese Wontons. I think in general they're a bit on the expensive side but it's not horrible. I'm not sure that I would go out of my way to eat here again,

We order takeout at least twice a month. The food is always consistent. Fresh, well prepared, not greasy. Best of all the family who owns this restaurant is great, they truly want you to have a great dining experience. By great dining experience I mean, they treat you like your in their home. When our newborn son was crying and fussy the owner carried him around the restaurant so my wife and I could enjoy our meal, and it wasn't so other patrons wouldn't be bothered, we were the only ones in the restaurant. We have been going here for several years now and the food has stayed consistently good.

Boo on Carl S. You can't review a place years after you have had it, things change in life. I happen to love Li's as does everyone I have ever met. I thought it was my little hidden gem but more and more I found out everyone has been eating it behind my back. There ratio of meat to veg is fantastic in all dishes and I haven't found one yet I didn't enjoy. The only downfall is the rice that comes with your order is nothing special. I can easily fix that problem by having them upgrade it to pork fried rice, which is stellar. The dinner menu gets a little pricey for Chinese, but if you stop by for lunch the amount you get for what you pay is well worth it. Plus I like that I have been there enough that they recognize me, I don't know why I like that so much but I do.

    (4)
  • Justin T.

I dine here often and have tried many dishes. I always enjoyed the food and beer is 2 for 1 during happy hour. Not much of an atmosphere, but the food is a delight. The owner waits tables and is quite pleasant. I especially like the chicken and fish sesame platter.

  • Carl S.

I have only eaten here one. It was so bad that I will never return. None of us finished our food and when they asked if we wanted it to go we said no thanks. It has been a couple years so maybe it's better but I will never know.

  • Susan S.

AWFUL! My husband and I ordered take out and it took well over an hour just sitting in the restaurant waiting for our food. When we finally got it and drove home (3 minute drive), the food was tasteless and cold. I'll NEVER eat there again.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
