We have been dining at Papa Mazzotti's for close to 15 years now, starting when they were located at 104th and Colorado. The new location in Eastlake is very homey, and the owners make you feel as if you've been invited to someones home for dinner. The homemade pasta is out of this world, the sausage and peppers fantastic. If you are in mood for chicken, you'd be hard pressed to find a better chicken piccata outside of the New York/Jersey area. The staff are friendly and attentive, never intrusive but always alert to your needs. I thoroughly enjoy dining here and will continue to do so for as long as they are in business.

The homemade spaghetti noodles and sauce and homemade meatballs are terrific. The ambiance has improved some, tables on the patio and such. I am glad to see it doing well and that it always seems to have customers. I do prefer to support a family owned neighborhood restaurant so we will continue to visit throughout the summer.

Homemade noodles are ok but the sauce was bad. It was very salty and you couldn't taste the other flavors. The parmigiana chicken wasn't breaded which is my preference but you couldn't taste the flavor of it because of the overwhelming saltiness. I was really hoping to like this place because the location and atmosphere are cozy and welcoming. Oh well back to my quest of good Italian food.

Don't let the strange location or gaudy decor fool you, this is pretty good italian food. The menu is decently varied, with a lot of your standard price points. Appetizers are cheap, which is always a plus for me, who wants to spend 8 bucks on an appetizer and then 8 bucks on a meal? From what I gathered while there, the main business is a banquet hall thing for grad parties and the like. The restaurant seems to be this little offshoot where they said "eh, we have this extra space, how about we throw some tables in here and see if people will come and eat some eggplant parmigiana?" Service was great, the single waiter was very helpful, always nearby, and super courteous and polite. Price was very reasonable as well. I think with an appetizer and 2 meals me and the misses walked out paying about 24 bucks. Can't really beat that. Don't give your business to the lame olive garden, give papa mazzotti's a chance. If you can get over the decor, the scary outside, and the tiny dining room, it's pretty good italian.

A girlfriend and I were craving some Italian food and decided to check this place out. BIG MISTAKE! The food was horrible. Thank god we filled up on the french bread that was provided. Their marinara sauce was disgusting, and their Alfredo sauce was over saturated with butter. I would never eat here again.

Papa Mazzotti's has a lot of the problems that most low-end American Italian restaurants have. Rather than making the dishes with the traditional recipes they seem to have opted for custom recipes. This lead to all of the dishes being "off" in some way. My wife and I eat Italian often, from industrial (Olive-garden) to hole-in-the-wall joints in New York, so the contrast is somewhat unpleasant. Maybe it's just a taste or regional thing but we weren't impressed. To follow is a list of the differences we took note of: The sauce, for starters, was closer to a over-seasoned pizza sauce than a pasta sauce. It was dark, strongly seasoned, and vaguely sweet. The Minestrone was well-seasoned but lacking in vegetables. The bread wasn't anything special, like thick-cut sandwich bread (the bread is usually one of the best parts of an italian dinner and we were disappointed). We had lasagna and manicotti and neither was baked. They were also served luke-warm rather than piping hot as one would expect. The fillings seemed to be ricotta and meat without any sauce and without baking this lead to a crumbly constancy. The atmosphere wasn't much different than any other small Italian restaurant. There was a guy singing old Sinatra and Do-Wop songs very passably. The setup was a tad unprofessional (a karaoke machine and amp on a wooden frame) but it sounded just fine. For our money, we'll go somewhere else for Italian. Everything was just too far off for our taste.

Great little neighborhood joint. We went on a Saturday night and were serenaded by a very nice crooner who fielded requests. Food was good...not great...but good. Didn't have very high expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised. We will definitely be back. I had the Teri's Special--eggplant with ravioli. The tiramisu was EXCELLENT (and I am somewhat of an expert)

Don't let the location fool you - this place is gooood. I'm a fan of any place that does homemade noodles - don't waste your time on the "regular" spaghetti - and real alfredo (not the watery, salty kind you get at most places), and they consider spaghetti a side so they win forever in my book. Most menu items can be made vegetarian by just skipping the meatball/sausage that comes with all the dinners, and their ravioli eggplant parmigiana is excellent. I've been going to Papa's since it opened when I was in high school and there's a reason. My only advice would be that the food is a little better on busy nights, i.e. Friday and Saturday. It seems to be fresher because they're going through it more quickly instead of having it sit around for awhile. If you don't want to wait for a table (with only 10 or so, it can take a few minutes), they do takeout as well.

This is a hidden gem in Thornton that my lovely sister introduced me to and thankfully, in our family, we always share what we order. While my sister ordered the homemade spaghetti and meatballs and my brother-in-law some wonderful sausage and cheese dish that I cannot remember the name of, I opted for the lasagna. Needless to say, all three dishes were scrump-dili-umptious (that means absolutely mouth watering yummy in "Jen speak." In addition to the incredible food, this cozy restaurant provides excellent service as well as entertainment in the form of a lounge singer named Tony. Tony really sets the mood for a lovely dinner ambiance. Even my 18 month old niece instantly fell in love with his crooning and showed her affection by dancing along in her high chair. So far, this definitely ranks as my numero uno choice whenever I am craving Italian food.

My husband took me there for the first time. He had been there before when they were at their old location. It was a pleasant experience. The food was perfect! The ambiance was nice and relaxing. The customer service was outstanding! It's definitely a hidden gem and its worth finding.

I love this place! It's a great Italian "family" restaurant. Authentic food, homemade noodles, incredible wedding soup, wonderful sauces (white, red, vodka), and a robust menu - this place is the real deal. It really captures the atmosphere of what a family restaurant should be. They will bend over backwards to make you whatever you want and they are genuinely concerned that you leave satisfied. We need more restaurants that aren't cookie cutter. Real, authentic, warm, and inviting: Papa Mazzotti's! Do yourself a favor - give it a try.

Love this place! From the fresh pasta to the family feel, it made for a nice evening. Dining there is like your favorite Aunt inviting you over for a friday night dinner complete with your uncle singing along to Tom Jones! I also love the fact that this is a small family owned place.

Look at ALL of the reviews for this place. I don't know for sure, but the filtered ones, where people have created Yelp accounts just to give it one star... I think they are true.

  • Deena A.

I'm sorry, but I keep trying this place because I want it to be good. The singer is a bit cheesy and the room is to small to support him. It feels a little intrusive. The sauce always tastes a bit scorched. I asked about it once and was told that's how real Italian sauce should taste! I know better then that. It's too bad, because Denver has so many good family run houses, and Thornton really needs one.

  • Tricia H.

Well, where to start? With the possibility of a microwave or Tony the karaoke lounge singer? Really though, they beat Olive Garden hands down, although I guess that's not saying a lot. Better than my old beloved Carmine's on Penn, much less snooty and much less packed. One minus is the common behavior found in much of Colorado - staring. But if you can get past their dire location (behind a Subway and next to a rodeo bar) and the staring, you'll have a grand time. Cheap chianti, but good nonetheless. My favorite dish? Mama Terri's. It's eggplant parmesan with ravioli. Comes with pasta, but I skip that. Also comes with some very good homemade tasting italian sausage and meatball. Minestrone is very good although not quite Pagliacci's. Salad is weak. Cheesy picnic table cloths. OK service. It's the Mama Terri's that makes me come back. That and you can always get it to go and enjoy it in the calmness of your own home. Closed Sunday and Monday, pretty lame if you ask me. I'm giving it 4 stars because for Italian in my neighborhood, it's either this or Olive Garden, yuck.

I had only been to Papa Mazzottis once until recently when they moved locations. Now it's closer to me and when I last visited, I was very pleased with the service and food. The only thing that may need help is the atmosphere, like some Italian music. But other than that, the food is delicious and the servers are very personable and responsive.

I'm giving this two stars for the service alone. The service was the only good thing about it. I got eggplant Parmesan. It was probably the worst I've ever had. It was so drenched in butter that was all I could taste. They must've pulled my spaghetti out and put it in the plate directly because my plate was full of water. We also got shrimp fettuccine Alfredo that was not seasoned at all. Very disappointing.

This is place is a neighborhood gem! We have tried on a few occasions to go here but have always passed by as they have been busy. But tonight my wife wanted to go here for per-valentines dinner. I am very glad we did. This is a family ran restaurant and has about a dozen tables its big enough not to be on top of each other but small enough to feel the true family atmosphere. The food was amazing. As my 7 year old would say, I don't like it I LOVE IT! Really most everything was made on site and the pasta was very authentic home made. The desert was wonderful and Liz waited on us and she was very friendly and very easy to talk to and answered all of our questions. Don't forget to try their soups both of them were awesome! We will be back with the family for sure!

Small quaint Italian restaurant. Family owned & operated. The cannoli's are perfect. The dough is perfectly golden brown. Your choice of fillings. The perfect amount of cheese inside. A generous amount of delicious marinara sauce on top. The brewed iced tea is fresh and keeps coming. The service is wonderful. The owner continuously makes the rounds to make sure customers are happy. Customers are known by name and come back often. To be safe get there early as the tables fill up fast.

We thought we found a cool new place to get some great Italian food. They claim that everything is home made, including fresh pasta. We were excited. Unfortunately it was one of the worst meals I've had in restaurant in a long time. The food was as low quality as it gets. The chicken piccata was a pile of slop with some cut-up pre-cooked (maybe even processed) chicken thrown on top. The kind of pre-cooked chicken with the grill lines marked on the outside. Really a terrible dish. My wife was treated to frozen meatballs, accompanied by a small dish of baked ziti. We didn't see any evidence of homemade anything, including the pasta. I'm not sure if there was a B team in then kitchen? I wouldn't be too upset if it was a super cheap meal, but we didn't get any alcohol or apps and I think we paid close to $40. Needless to say, this was a 1 and done experience. Too bad.

Honestly I don't even want to give it any stars. There is no excuse for the utter lack in quality of the food. It was disgusting, My lettuce was brown, the chicken was dry, and the sauce was burnt. Please call Robert Irvine for help.

Great food!! I really like this place but the seating could be more intimate. It feels like you're sitting in someone's living room but the food really is delicious.

Despite the mixed reviews I read here on Yelp, we decided to try this restaurant anyway because some friends highly recommended it. I also liked that it was very close to my home and could walk there if I wanted to. The restaurant looks good from the street and the decor was updated and "fresh" looking. The service was very prompt in the beginning, however it slowed down a bit as the tables filled up (there were only two servers working on a Friday night). My wife started out with a ministrone soup and I had a salad with home made Italian dressing. Both were very good. I ordered the Lasagna (one of the "favorite" dishes, per the menu) and my wife had home made spaghetti noodles with house made tomato sauce. My son ordered a personal size pizza. The home made noodles were exceptional, according to my wife, however the tomato sauce fell flat - she said it had a very peculiar taste that overshadowed the entire meal. My lasagna was very dense and a bit chewy, and it was covered with the same funny tasting tomato sauce. I also noticed that there wasn't much cheese in it. I was secretly thinking that the frozen lasagna from Costco was much better tasting. My teenage son (with a hollow leg and who will eat anything and everything) turned his nose up at the pizza. He ate one slice, complained about the lack of flavor, and pushed his plate away. We were all saddened by our experience, as we really like to support the local establishments whenever possible, and this one is so close to our home that we can get there without driving. However I don't think we will be back. There are so many other Italian Kitchen restaurants around our area that offer similar dishes for the same prices, but are much more memorable and better tasting.

I ate here with my daughter its a nice little family owned spot, buried in a residential area. The service was fine and the decor is very casual. I had the spaghetti the pasta was handmade and fantastic the sauce was a little on the bitter side. My daughter had the Gnocchi and that too was excellent except for the sauce. The sauce issue may have been a one time issue so give Mazzotti's a try for yourself. Service was great and the prices are very affordable.

The food here is really down home Italian cooking. Love the wide spaghetti noodles that are fresh. It is a family atmosphere in a nice neighborhood. The owner came by and talked to all of us, and she was very friendly. This is the second time I have been here and it did not disappoint. Love the lasagna. Entree ranges around $10. Domestic beers: $4.50

Hole in the wall Italian in Thornton that is a refreshing departure from all the mass-market chain restaurants in this area. Try the "Tomato Vodka" cream sauce with penne or rigatoni -- delicious!

I really wanted to like it. Truly I did. I miss good Italian food. Sadly I'm only giving 2 stars because the service was exceptional. I picked up to go, everyone was so warm and friendly. I ordered lasagna. I couldn't finish it and I love lasagna. If I knew any better this lasagna was a week old. Stiff and stale. My boyfriend got the scallops and same deal. He couldn't finish it, tasted old and extremely fishy. Being that he's Italian I trust his opinion that the food was awful. Sorry to say, this won't be my go to for Italian food.

Have struggled finding a place that makes a respectable homemade spaghetti. Turns out, there is one within a few miles of my house. How did I not know this place was here????

Ordered the chicken Parmesan and the papas feast. Everything tasted like it had been frozen. The chicken in the chicken Parmesan with rubbery and the sauce was very bland. I was very excited to eat here because this place is close to my house. The garlic toast was okay. Maybe I just hit them on a bad day.

I've never had an Eggplant Parmesan that would taste so good! Any other EPs are tasteless compared to what I had here. I'd like to go back and try their other dishes, after I have the EP one more time first! Will be back and this time I'd take the family!

Awesome lunch at Papa M.. Had the spaghetti and sausage and meatballs. Always fresh tasting with great flavor. Not what you would expect from a restaurant as the dining area is one semi small room, but it's homey and intimate feeling and the staff were very friendly. It a cute little independent mom n pop, and the food is great !

We ate there Saturday night. Arrived a little before 8pm, and the place was empty, and freezing. I'm currently 7 months pregnant and my temperature usually runs hot. But during this meal I kept my heavy coat on. The food wasn't that great. I ordered the Chicken Parmigiana, I got about a breast and a half, and the rest were noodles. There was no breading on the chicken, isn't that what makes Chicken Parmigiana Chicken Parmigiana? I asked the waitress if it was suppose to have breading and she said no. So basically I got chicken with some red sauce on it. Hubby wasn't impressed with his pizza, and the service wasn't that great. Even the other customer is the restaurant had to ask for a refill for his coffee. Not what expect for when I go out to eat.

I've been here a total of three times in the last 18 months and I've never left unhappy! I really love the fettuccine alfredo. The first time I went here, I loved it so much the next time we went was my birthday! They gave me a balsalmic sundae (DELICIOUS!) for my birthday. My boyfriend wasn't yet sold on lasagna the way he is now by the time he hast ate here, but I'm definitely going to take him back! We live close enough to walk now!!!! Last time I went, I had dinner alone, which I have never done in a restaurant like this. They had a sweet older gentleman doing karaoke to old Italian love songs. It was AWESOME!! I actually teared up that he was so adorable! P.S. They've moved! They're now at 126th and York (Take 120th East of I-25 to Claude Ct. Left on Claude, right on 126th, left on York and you're just about there!)

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
