this quaint little mexican joint has alot of things going for it. the salsa is good onion spicy salsa. my wife enjoyed a good margarita (especially for happy hour). the fajitas were tasty with cactus and onion. mild rice and beans were full of flavor. all around a good mexican food experience which is hard to come by in Colorado in general.

Traveling through and stopped for lunch. Excellent food and service. I had a tostada with shredded beef. The refritos and rice were the best ever. Serving size was perfect. Only odd thing was the size of the place - long and skinny with little seating. I recommend Anejo's highly.

Authenitc, delicious food and great margaritas. Reasonably priced, too.

Why didn't we discover Anejo's sooner? Our service was great, giant margaritas for $5.50, excellent chips an salsa and our entrees were tasty, fresh and sizable. The only thing that would make Anejo's better is if they had an outdoor patio like the Mexican joint across the street.

We went here for a meal after hiking and traveling for the day. We had great service and great food. I don't think we have had Mexican food this good in awhile. Salsa was fantastic! There were 6 of us and they handled us easily. We'll be back for more!

Just wanted to grab something quick when I was checking out the black canyon with my fam... Holy shit we were stoked as hell to find this "literal" hole in the wall, little yellow building. My family and I just move from San Diego to Denver about a year ago and we can't find anything in Denver like we could find back home 20 mins from the boarder. But let me tell you this place is just as good if not better than most of the Mexican establishments back home. Don't be a pinche puta get your zoot suit like a pachuco and hit it up.

The food is freshly prepared. I'm not afraid of a little spice, so the flavors could have been more assertive. The house salsa is awesome! My husband said he would buy it bottled. BUT the top tip is: come between 4-6pm and order a large house margarita for $5. The tequila pour is heavy handed, and the perfect way to finish off a day in the river or slopes.

Yelp reviews seemed pretty good for Anejo's but being from South Texas and loving Tex-Mex, you never know what to expect outside of your comfort zone when it comes to Mexican food. Upon the advice of a local, my dad and I decided to try Anejo's for lunch. It's a tiny little place with only about 8 tables and seating for 20 or so, but we were a little late for lunch and there were seats available without a wait. Service was excellent during the entire meal and our waiter was easy to have a conversation with. He answered our questions and made great suggestions. The chips and salsa were a great start! We went through 2 baskets and a refill of salsa. I had beef enchiladas with red sauce and rice. My dad had shrimp quesadillas with guacamole on the side. We were both extremely pleased with our meals. I really like good Mexican rice and this was some of the best I've had. My dad really enjoyed the guacamole and said there was a certain taste to it that he couldn't identify. After asking our waiter about it, he asked the kitchen but they would not reveal their secret! (which you have to respect) I'm visiting for another week or so and I know we will be back at least once more before I leave.

My husband found this place while we road-tripped to Telluride. It is small and quaint. Service is a little slow, but very friendly. Everything is homemade. I had a pork burrito with red and green sauce. It was solidly delicious. The rice and beans were also quite tasty. I had a house margarita, and I know, you can't expect a stellar margarita that way, but it was still quite drinkable.

Service was great and the place is cute, but the food was mediocre. I'm bummed we chose this place in such a cute, quaint town. There are so many places that looked great, but I trusted all the reviews on Yelp, and was disappointed. I wouldn't recommend this place.

I had two lovely meals here. He chips and salsa are devine. Really interesting chile Relleno. Tony is so friendly and made us feel very welcome.

What a joke this place is... Everything is extremely overpriced for quantity and quality of the food. We ordered a taco salad, Huesvos rancheros burrito supreme which was smaller then the 99 cent Taco Bell burrito and they charge 11.50. Our bill cam out to almost 50 dollars for probably only 5.00 worth of food. I highly recommend people to choose another place to have Mexican food at.

Best beef tacos I ever had. Must be local Colorado beef. Seriously great food. Simple and hi quality.

This place was busy on a Monday evening, but that told us it probably meant the place were really good. And the crowd was right. Hands down the best tortilla soup I've ever had! I was going to order a bowl, but the server told me the cup was pretty big, especially if I planned to order entrees. I was skeptical, but she was right - in fact, at other restaurants, I'd have called THIS "cup" a bowl. A generous handful of crisp tortilla strips lay among the thick, smooth broth, and the flavors were well-balanced between the acidity of the tomato and the fattiness of both the chunks of avocado and the cheese (I think I tasted cotija cheese). Next time I come in I'll only be getting the bowl. We both thought the salsa was delicious - it was bright, flavorful, and fresh. As we had been eating meat all weekend, we opted for vegetarian entrees, and one could hardly tell there was no meat as it was still hearty. I was grateful that the arroz wasn't dry, and though I'm no refried beans lover, most of it disappeared from my plate. We didn't order margaritas, but all the ones that I saw were delivered in huge, bowl-like glasses. The strawberry version looked especially delicious with a beautiful dense color and a juicy strawberry garnish on the rim. The service was harried, but the 3 staff members working the room were pleasant and took care of us with refilling our drinks, getting us more chips, and even asking if we'd like to move from one of the bar seats to a table once it became available. Because the space is so narrow and small, the kitchen is right there in the open, so expect to leave the restaurant smelling like the good food you just had. When it's not super busy, you can sit wherever you find a seat. We didn't know this and just stood around awkwardly for a couple minutes. Watching other diners come in it appeared that when lines began to form, the servers tried to help seat them.

Best Mexican food in Gunnison! We love to get the fajitas for two and some house margaritas!

"That's my mom, that's my dad, and there's my little brother," our server told another gent in the checkout line. I like family places. I really like family places with great food and drink. These folks make honest, from scratch food. Fantastic carnitas. I don't understand why I can't get it this tender. The green chili on my partner's burrito had the bit that she loves out of good Mexican green chili. Though, it wasn't as hot as it could have been. I always measure Mexican restaurants by the beans and rice. If the beans aren't good, nothing else will be. And, Anejo's doesn't disappoint. The margs are giant, but unlike many giant margs, they also have a giant amount of booze. I worry about that a bit. I'm glad I walked, and I have an excessive tolerance. A bargain at $5.50, but is that wise? They need a bigger place. Families were waiting, then leaving. Luckily, there was room at the bar for two! Normally, I don't eat at places with "bistro" in the name unless they appear to actually be a bistro. These folks have a big mirror over the bar. That'll do, carnitas, that'll do.

Really good, not from the area just visiting from California, so Mexican food is big back at home. I have to say one of the best fajitas I've had by far. Good service, very clean and just a really traditional Mexican feeling. Definitely going back again.

Very quick and friendly service. We didn't wait more than 15 minutes before getting our entree. Enough time to finish the free chips and salsa! Great salsa, made fresh. Fresh food that is very delicious. Great portion sizes, lots of food.

As another Yelper says "this place has a large open kitchen" so you would have to close your eyes not to see into it. So there are no heat lamps here as one person suggested so do not be discouraged. I was shocked by how good the food here is! In a mountain town of 5,800 I didn't think I would find good Mexican food but thank God I did! As of this writing I have eaten at this place three time since I have been in Gunnison and I am sure I'll go again before I leave. The staff, which looks like a father, daughter & two sons that works all day, are starting to recognize my wife and I. This place is narrow and colorful (festive) with limited table seating but a lot of bar seating. The bar seating on the west side of the restaurant is a little awkward but after a few of their awesome margaritas you want even notice. We have had burritos, carne asada & fish tacos (the fish tacos tasted great and fresh), chili rellenos and red enchiladas; all are excellent choices. If you like Mexican food and margaritas you have to give this place a try while in Gunnison.

Our first time at Anejo's tonight...and Lord willing, not our last! Freshly made tortilla chips and the best salsa I've had at a Mexican restaurant started out our meal accompanied by a pretty decent house marg that did not go light on the tequila-don't consume on an empty stomach! ;) I'm accustomed to places with good chips and salsa having poor subpar entrees-but not Anejo's! I had the steak tacos-incredibly yummy and highly recommended! The black beans and rice, Which I usually try a bite of and then ignore...well, I scraped the plate clean. My husband had a combo plate and couldn't quit raving about it. Bottom line, loved Anejo's and will be returning posthaste! But word to the wise, they are closed on Sundays right now...

I feel like every trip to Gunnison I've made without coming here has been a waste of my time! This is the best restaurant in Gunnison (that I've been to, I have been to most, but not all). Everything I tasted was great and I can't wait to go back.

This Mexican restaurant stands out above and beyond the 8 other ones. My favorite dish is the gusiado carnities, the pork is so tender, moist & flavorful. The tortillas are homemade along with their chips. The mole is very tasty, as with all the dishes that I've tried. I go there once a week and try to mix it up. Their picante sauce is really good to. I also love their mole.

Great food! I got the tricolor enchiladas and the wife got steak tacos. Both were very good. House margarita is good and strong. Chips and salsa were also great!

Great lunch! Brought me back to my childhood and the rolled tacos we ate regularly. The flautas were so good! Margaritas are strong but tasty. Highly recommend.

Great food in this family owned, authentic Mexican jewel. You shouldn't miss this. Best food and margs in Gunnison. Richard is the greatest server making his father proud. We will be back. Thank you.

We were traveling on a road trip with my parents, and I hadn't had Mexican food in a while and I saw some favorable reveiws on this place. Wow, this place is amazing. My parents and fiancee all had seafood dishes and they were great! Very flavorful! I had a green chile burrito and it was amazing as well. The chef was a one man show and you can tell all the dishes were handcrafted. The margaritas are also great, using top shelf tequila (Sauza) and not super expensive ($6 for a large) but strong! :) A definite recommend for locals and travelers alike!

Best Mexican food ever. Was visiting family over my birthday and had to choose someplace for takeout. Really had a taste for Mexican food, but nobody had any suggestions. I googled my choices and thought Anejo's sounded really promising. I was beyond happy with the food! We're really picky about our tacos, so we can be really critical. But everyone absolutely loved the food. Fantastic! Can't wait to go back for a visit so I can get more Anejo's....I mean visit with my family.

Nothing like being a non-local in a restaurant - over an hour and we are still waiting for our food with insincere "we're sorry" comments. How about at least comping our drinks while three tables around us get seated and get food while we waited - or at least maybe asking if we might want another drink or an appetizer or anything besides "we're out of salsa" while we waited? Sure the reviews are promising but I'll have to taste it in my to go box back at the hotel. Who wants to be the last table in a restaurant? Okay ate in hotel and food is decent, but not really worth the $15/plate. OF COURSE they forgot the guacamole with the tacos I ordered and the rice with the enchiladas my husband ordered. I rarely write negative reviews, thinking @the server is new@ or "they're Having a bad night" but really? Too many year is the service industry to not be totally disappointed by incompetence.

Told the waiter that we needed one minute to look at the menu. Ten minutes later and we were still waiting for him. Most of that time he was talking to the cashier or watching tv. I put my finger up several times but instead of looking our way he continued to watch the TV above our heads. We tried to get his attention on several occasions but he never looked over. After finally getting his attention he just nodded his head like he would be right with us. We waited as he continued to bring food to other tables and then made up several checks and then cashed out a few tables. We obviously weren't a priority to him. Just cashed out our drink and left. Made us wonder how long the food would take and whether or not he would provide service at all. The owner needs to look into this server. He is a tall hispanic male and he was working the night of this review. The chips and salsa were terrific (giving an extra star for this delight). Wish we could have eaten the food. We were pretty hungry after a long day so we decided to go elsewhere.

My wife and I consider ourselves Foodies. We always try to find a nice gem of a restaurant wherever we travel. We found it at Anejos in Gunnison. The food is fresh, the prices are just right, and the salsa is home made. Look for the lime green doorway just two doors south of Hwy 50 on Main St. (We drove by it twice) Don't miss this one! Its well worth it. The Queso with Chorizo was awesome. Fish tacos are a must. Red Enchiladas and crispy beef tacos are awesome. The chips with the salsa are warm, crisp and not oily at all. A great find in Gunnison!

We live here locally and it is true that there are nine (9) Mexican restaurants in town. We have tried them all. 3 of the other restaurants all started as the Fiesta Mexicana and when it went out of business the manager, a cook, and a waiter started three new restaurants. They all have the exact same menus and food. Anejo's is completely different. I do not care for fillers in my meat. When I order shredded beef at Anejo that is what I get. In other local restaurants you get a little shredded beef mixed in with onions potatoes an even carrots, more of a stew than shredded beef. The food has always been good although I do think it is funny that the rice comes out in a cup shape instead of dispersed on the plate. The major downsides to this restaurant are two-fold. The first obvious problem is the location. The size and shape of the building mean that there is one table for six in the front then a long walk past the open kitchen to four small tables crowded together in the back. It can be a lengthy wait to get a table for two and there is no way a group of more than six would ever get a table. On the plus side, they are the only Mexican restaurant in town that delivers so we frequently do that. The other down side is that it is a family run business and the last several times we have been there our waiter has been very young, well below labor law requirements. Not that he is necessarily a bad waiter, but it is summer and he should be out playing not working open to close.

The tacos is what to get and drink some margs my favorite is the adobobada tacos some of the best tacos I've had anywhere and that is saying a lot because I've had tacos all over the world not to mention that the food in Gunnison is sub par at best I have had burritos and enchiladas here and they are alright but the taco plate is fantastic

Love this place! Bulldog margaritas are where it is at!!! However, they seem to always be out of the coronas that go in it, but they do substitute with equally awesome beers for that purpose. Wish there were more seating but it won't keep me from coming back. Definitely my go to when I have a burrito and margarita craving!

I was surprised at the veggie burrito with potatoes.....it was good....server was super nice....hated the fact that it was so flippin hot in the place! NO AIR CONDITIONER!!!!!! We sat next to the door for air....and then a customer went outside to smoke...he might as well have been sitting right next to me.

If you are in Gunnison, and have a hankering for Mexican food, this is the place to go. On my last visit, I had Michoacan style carnitas, which were fantastic. Ask for their spicy salsa. With your carnitas, it will not disappoint.

Great tacos and the salsa is best restaurant salsa ever. But the rest of our food just basic American Mexican. Yummy, but standard.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
