This would probably be a mere three stars except for the views (of both the hot springs beside the river and the surrounding mountains) and for the service. We're traveling with dogs, in serious heat, and it is making meals kind of a hassel. We don't want fast food all the time, but we can't leave the dogs in the car while we sit. Finding venues that will let us sit on the patio with the dogs have been rare. Big "thank you" to the staff here for giving us a great table in the shade and putting up with my ill behaved dogs. They also had to deal with the round robin of allergies and exclusions that our small party of three brought to the table, and they managed to feed us all full in spite of it all. I ordered the seafood tacos, shrimp and (real) crab, and they were pretty good. I'd have preferred flour tortillas with these. Soft corn gets soggy so fast and falls apart. But the slaw and the pico were the right counterpart to the seafood and every flavor stood out. These weren't fantabulous, but they were certainly tasty. My only serious complaint is that the rice was dry. My dining companions' dishes looked and smelled good, but I did not taste them. Yes, the place is a bit pricy and touristy, but... you're in Durango. That's kind of the whole town. No way around that, I'm afraid. PS: rural gentrification is terrifying! Just a side rant: No offense meant, but So Cal needs to get over itself and realize that in 2011, people from South and Central America are immigrating all over the continental US, not just to your town. After all, So Cal gave us Taco Hell, right? So let's get some perspective.

Coming from Southern California I was expecting something quite mediocre -- after all, how good can a Mexican restaurant be in Colorado? No offense -- it's just a long way from where I typically think of when someone asks where they can find great Mexican food. Thankfully, I was very positively surprised with this place. The first thing I noticed was how friendly and warm this place felt. The staff was great and attentive. Secondly, I noticed the SALSA. Delicious! It was some of the most flavorful and thick salsa I've had in a long time. Each of us road trippers was very pleased with our dishes. I had the seafood enchiladas which were loaded with ocean goodies (despite there being no ocean) and which were fresh and flavorful. My friends were quite happy with their burritos too.

Stopped in and had the combo for two. The meal was great and plenty of food. The only complaint was the beer was not as cold as I would have liked it. Service was great !!!

Amazing service Typical Mexican Restaurant decor Exceptional food So, there were only two reviews of this place before I visited, both were fives. I would have been more apt to give them a five if their guacamole would have been more authentic. I am not a big fan of the creamy guacamole with sour cream added to it, you can tell by its pale, lighter green color. The meal that I order was A+ to say the least. I have never seen chicken, rice and mushrooms with red sauce as a primary dish at a Mexican Restaurant, but it was so good I went back two days later for the same dish because I knew I wasn't going to see it again. Everyone wants to talk about the margaritas here. Me and my friends first margarita there was our one and only. It was a Don Julio silver. It was so strong we were practically drunk halfway through our main course. I have never encountered such a strong margarita that tasted so smooth. When people say they have good margaritas at Tequilas, they mean that they are very strong and mixed well. In my second experience at this Restaurant I discovered that they are very consistent here. The only thing I changed was my type of tequila which I had changed to Cabo Wabo anejo. They have a very large selection of tequilas here, but not nearly as much as the Lost Dog pub and club. Overall, this place is very consistent, wait staff is very nice and accommodating and lets not forget that the food is fabulous. Plan on a wait if you go during prime times. This place seems to be a favorite for locals and tourists alike.

This is a chain of 6 Mexican restaurants. After reading the earlier review we tried this place out tonight. We ordered the Chicken fajita for 2 and was brought a very large quantity which probably could have served 3 people. The Dakotas were extremely tasty and the service was prompt and professional. Also I should mention that the chips were brought out hot with the salsa. If their was a downside to this place it was the restroom which needed cleaning. otherwise I would recommend this place.

Being from Texas, I know good Mexican food - and this was good!! Two of us shared the fajitas carnitas. They were delicious!!!! We asked for jalapenos on the side. They brought us whole jalapenos that had been seeded, seasoned, and flash fried. They were delicious and hot!!!!! Margaritas weren't bad either! Good, friendly service

Very tasty Mexican food! Had the carne asada, and it was fantastic...tender and flavorful. Beans and rice were very good, too. Even the chips and salsa were excellent. Great service, great food, great town...what more could a person want?

Food was good, and their menu was full of more authentic dishes. Service was prompt and friendly. We'll go back for sure. Everything was great, but the price was just a little higher than expected, especially for lunch.

Excellent food! I live in Southern California, and we have pretty authentic, great Mexican restaurants there. So when I visit other parts of the county I am usually not at all impressed. But this place seriously is better then some of my favorite hole-in-the-walls at home. We would recommend, Chili Colorado, Chicken Mole Enchiladas, Carne Asada and best of all the Pork Tamales. The service was fast and friendly. Cannot wait to go back to this little gem.

Great Mexican food. If you come here during the winter, ask to be seated away from the door, otherwise it'll get pretty cold every time the door opens.

impressive that there's a real-deal mexican restaurant out in podunkville. everything is good here, but the carne asada / mojo de ajo plates are the best in town.

Blech! Tourists like it. Food is bland and lacking authentic Mexican flavor.

Visiting Durango from San Diego, my wife and I didn't have high expectations for the local Mexican cuisine. To say we were pleasantly surprised is an understatement. The portions were quite large, and the carne asada fajitas I had were seasoned very well. Customer service was impressive as well.

It amazes me sometimes how different locations within a chain can be so different from one another. Case in point, this Tequila's location. I have been going to the location in Trinidad, CO, on a fairly regular basis for over 3 years now, and I am a huge fan. When I came to this location, everything was just a little off. The queso was runny. The tortilla chips were oily. My quesadilla was overcooked and over-garnished. And the food just sat in my stomach making me feel just a little queasy. It wasn't quite bad, but it wasn't quite right either. Also, prices were higher than the Tequila's in Trinidad. Very odd for a chain to have different prices as different locations. Eat at your own risk.

Patricio was our bartender and was very fast and friendly. We were here at 3:30pm on a Thursday. We had some drinks and a spinach quesadilla at the bar. Quesadilla was huge!! delicious too. It came with a side of guacamole and sour cream yum. They have a pretty big menu. Overall a cozy and festive place for lunch or dinner.

Tequila's Mexican Restaurant serves up some very tasty Mexican food at this Durango location. We were promptly seated and given some great chips and tasty homemade salsa. For dinner I ordered the pork enchiladas and they were excellent. Good flavor and some good spice to boot. They had a green enchilada sauce and I mixed in some of their salsa for some added kick. The rice and refried beans were also good. My wife enjoyed the bean and cheese enchiladas. To wash everything done we had strawberry and raspberry margaritas, which were also tasty. Mine was leaded up didn't seem to have much punch to it. Although the restaurant was pretty noisy, the service was good, and the food was great. I would highly recommend Tequila's Mexican Restaurant.

Wish we lived here, because I'd be coming here at least once a week! The best carnitas I've ever had! Friendly service staff and great food! What else could anyone want?

Hector is the best, always friendly and crazy fast. The margaritas are the best in town!

I really loved this place when I lived in Durango. I am from SoCal and am super spoiled with Mexican food but this place has delicious carne asada and shrimp. Their Guacamole is good too and not too bad on the Micheladas. Whenever I came here I would always share this giant plate for two that came with tortillas, beans rice, shrimp, carne asada, and mushrooms. Omg the seasoning was so on point. MMMMMMM

This is a must. When in Durango dine at Tequila's -- they have a happy hour including appetizers, and my favorite was the Carne Asada Many times at a Mexican restaurant the beef if dry and tough as if they used chuck steak, this is not the case at Tequila's it's like the used a Filet Migon for the quesadilla. I want to try all their cuisine.

I don't understand why everyone's reviews of this place are so great! ESPECIALLY those of you from Southern California!! I moved to Denver from San Diego about a year ago, so I'm very snobby about my Mexican food. This place doesn't hold a candle to the restaurants in California!! My dinner was mediocre. It wasn't bad...just not great. I came in with such high expectations because of the reviews here, and was totally disappointed.

Great Mexican, the Chili Verde is the best anywhere. You'll be hard pressed to find better Mexican anywhere in the country. This is good food. Make sure you try the Margarita's on the rocks not some half wit pre-made mix. Only fresh squeezed limes go in these , good stuff. This is Mexican as it should be.

We love this place. We are from Texas and we can't get Mexican food this good there. We ate here on Wednesday November 27th and the staff was so nice and helpful and fun. We sat in one of the booths that was backed up to the Kitchen area and we could hear the cooks and waiters singing and tapping on pots and pans to keep the beat. My husband I kept laughing because with each spanish song we would hear them sing it would remind us of my husband's father who passed away a few years back. We ordered the ultimate nachos and added cut up carne asada to it and it reminded us of when we lived in San Diego California. Then my husband ordered the enchilada plate and they were out of this world. The enchiladas were not soggy or drowned in sauce (we hate them soggy and swimming in sauce). I ordered the flauta plate and they were amazing as well. The chicken was so flavorful and moist that I didn't want to leave any behind. Our sons had grilled cheese and chicken nuggets. I really appreciated the fact that they had more than Mexican food choices for children. My boys are really picky which can make it hard. I am glad we don't live here because I would gain about 100 lbs just from eating here every week! We will be back and recommend this restaurant to all our friends and doctors who visit Durango throughout the year. Thank you for not just giving us great food but also giving us an experience and a walk down memory lane!

Very delicious Mexican food. Probably the best in Durango. Their salsa, and cabbage with chips are great. Definitely great service, and yummy food. If you're in the mood for Mexican food this is the place to go.

this place was quite empty for a friday evening but maybe it was late in the evening. Service was prompt and food arrived hot. I had a margarita with a kick which might be cause for me not being able to remember the food quality. I'm pretty sure the seafood enchilada wasn't terrible. I would go back and sample more entrees if i have a designated driver. The interior decor is very touristy. I'd still prefer Francisco's however.

Three of us ate here. Two of us rated the food as average, the third thought it was terrible but he's always cranky. The weird cabbage salsa was just that, weird and hard to deal with. It played no part in my rating. The regular salsa was average, nothing special. They did not have any true hot sauce, which the cranky guy wanted. My standard meal is a green burro. I thought it was fine, nothing special in terms of seasonings, the meat in it was tender, portion size good, could have used at least twice as much green chile in it. Service was fine. I think the typical diner will be fine with this restaurant. Prices were reasonable.

Not recommended. Tourist trap food. My impression is they cheap-out with apparently low quality ingredients in their food -- beans, rice, mole, enchiladas, beef, tequila, all tasted and looked very much like a heated up frozen Old El Paso Mexican TV dinner. To go to the next level, the owner should invest in better quality food and service instead of just making a quick buck. Beef enchiladas really strange tasting. Mole very runny nowhere near authentic. Servers disinterested seems wanted to shuffle customers through. To say something positive, I did enjoy the salsa and chips. I started out by trying hard to get us a good meal based on Yelp and really disappointed here and felt like crawling under a rock as my wife was giving me that look like, why did you waste our evening and money on this place. She did not finish her beef enchiladas.

Tequila's food is good Mexican food, but it is way overpriced and touristy. The service is terrible. Probably won't go back unless I absolutely must (we do have friends that genuinely enjoy it). Pretty sure I have nothing else to say about this place.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
