Eat at Joe's for lots of healthy options: rice bowls, noodles bowls, soup, salads and sushi rolls (not the best sushi I've ever had, but still). Nothing fried and no MSG. You have lots of choices for building your own rice bowl, so get creative. Don't forget your punch card to earn free food. Any try the yummy iced teas. My favorite is the passion black tea. I have never had a bad experience at this location. The employees are always happy and friendly. A couple of times when my edamame arrived late, they gave me coupons for a free appetizer. The patio is partially shaded and has plenty of seating. There is even free parking in the garage. This is a great place for a work day lunch.

I don't often find myself eating at or reviewing chains but Sir Nicholas happens to enjoy Tokyo Joe's for fast and kind of healthy lunch on occasion so I recently found myself at this location and I have to say it's not bad. I like the ability to build your own bowl. It's nice that they have tofu and about 8 vegetable add-ins to throw in there. And I enjoy the veggie choices because they are different - things like water chestnuts and sprouts. I also like the variety of sauces on top, anything from sweet to spicy and it's all your choice. For the price and ease I think a lunch at Tokyo Joe's is a-ok, but I can't say that I'll be rushing back here weekly.

Their noodles remind me of Chef Boyardee. It's not necessarily a bad thing but it does weird me out. I still eat there every now and then It's never my first choice when there are so many authentic Japanese restaurants in Denver.

Tokyo Joe remains high on my list for three reasons: 1) location, 2) extra-friendly service, and 3) simplicity. Although I've never tried navigating through that DIY bowl, I appreciate the fact that you can build your own meal, but more or less my go-to are their salads. They're fairly large and will fill you up - even the Regular size. The fact that they drench everything in sauce is an added plus. All in all, I love how it's a quick hop-stop from my place and how quickly the food comes out. Fresh and dripping in (probably unhealthy) flavor... just the way I like it.

That's right - I'm going FIVE STARS! If you can cure my hangover then I'm gonna be a fan for life! Plus, the couple damn hot menz who work here with all them tats and piercings are aces! This store is cool in the summer, warm in the winter and it doesn't smell weird like some of the other TJ stores around town. There is ample sitting room for large groups or small, intimate meals. It's always clean and there are multiple TVs to help patrons escape the work week. The food is solid and simple. Chicken, rice, sauce, done. I know I could be more healthy and get brown rice with veggies but I don't. For around $6.50 the price is right. Plenty of options by way of meats, rice, sauces and veggies. They got some basic sushi and salad options too. Variety is the spice of life baby. The location is easily accessible and there is parking available in the garage just behind the store. Outdoor seating is always a good thing for summertime. Even at lunchtime with a big crowd the service is efficient and always polite - despite the "hard" exterior of the employees. If you're nice then that's what you get in return. Bonus: Sunshine Wheat. Boom and a Boom!

Tokyo Joe's involvement and sponsorship of MTB racing and Bodybuilding/ Fitness/ Physique competitors and competitions are the first reasons I ever walked in to any of their locations to try out some healthy fast food. 7 years later- I am friends with Larry Leith- the owner. I love Larry's commitment to providing fresh healthy food quickly. Tokyo Joe's trains their employees on the importance of helping feed "difficult" customers-- meaning Pro Bodybuilders like 4 times Mr. Olympia, Professional Bikini Models and countless Denver Broncos, Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche players. No matter why you are eating at Tokyo Joe's-- no matter what location the staff is always eager to help you get the nutrients you might need if you are on any restricted diet. As an added bonus- Monday's they have HALF PRICED SUSHI made to order! BOOM.

Good fast semi healthy food.. I have been coming for years and I always get the Boulder Bowl. A great option if you are on the go... I would suggest asking for less rice and more veggies because at times you feel like the rice is all just fill. A good place to go after some late-night yoga at Corepower

You know, with staff this great it's really hard to not give this place five stars. Every single person I've encountered is friendly, most know me by name and remember my regular order. The line usually moves along fast during lunch, the prices are super reasonable and the food it great for a walk up to the counter joint. I love this Joe's.

Run of the mill TJ near the state Capitol building. There is plenty of seating and they are pretty fast getting the food out. It is all your standard "fast" Japanese food. I find that their rice can get gummy (brown rice), but otherwise it is fine. Nothing special, but it works for a quick bite.

I don't eat out for lunch very often, but Tokyo Joe's is certainly a staple in the rotation if I need to go grab a quick bite. Their sushi isn't top-rate, but for the money it's solid and gives you a nice light option for lunch on the go. I've also had good luck grabbing sushi for a quick picnic in Cheeseman Park. The bowls are also pretty good, and you can mix and match to your personal tastes.

decent tofu spring rolls with peanut sauce. at $4 you're better off going somewhere more authentic or making at home for a better snack at the same price.

Not a huge fan of Tokyo Joe's, but someone took me out and I was not about to complain about complimentary food! I wish I could give more stars. :( The MoJoe Bowl was satisfying, a bit salty, but definitely flavorful. The service was great! Our cashier was not only informative, but friendly and talkative. One star for food, another for service, but I was not excited about the roach I saw on the floor one bit! The restaurant did look clean, but unfortunately I was no longer hungry. Will probably not come back for my disinterest in any asian cuisine, but the staff is definitely welcoming and I am so happy with how I was served. I just don't think a cockroach walking around is a good idea. I mean, he didn't even stop and ask how our food was! If you're going to make round after round, at least ask us how we are doing. Sheesh!

In the downtown and closer to my office, I got a chance to explore one more eat out. There is not so much to describe as I ordered for a carry out and also this place is a standard franchise food outlet. The ambiance was pretty good and seating area was more spacious. I ordered brown rice bowl with dark chicken and different varieties of veggies (carrots, snap peas, sprouts and red onions). Dark chicken is little bit dry and tastes good. For the spicy lovers, you need to add the sriracha hot sauce to you food. Menu is straight forward and we have outdoor sitting for who likes the fresh air!!!

Near the capitol building, this location of Tokyo Joe's has become a reliable lunch option. Rice bowls, noodle bowls, soups, salads or sushi, I have rarely been let down by Tokyo Joe's. It's simple, fast Japanese food and they know their niche market well. That would be mostly the downtown business lunch crowd. The line moves quickly if there is a line, and the runners have your meal out as quickly as the kitchen puts it up. I've found the restrooms to be clean and the seating area well maintained during my many visits. Recently I have discovered the larger sized miso soup with noodles and tofu - this makes a great light lunch. Keep up the good work Tokyo Joe's!

I love this Tokyo Joe's, it's my favorite location in town for a number of reasons. I really like the staff because they are always friendly and happy. They always get my order right and the kitchen staff does a great job with the food preparation-especially the night crew! My food is extra delicious when I get it from this location, I think this stems from their care and attention to the detail. I'm picky about my food and service and this restaurant gets it right. Their dishes are super fresh and they have plenty of gluten-free options. Tokyo Joe's staff on Grant St, thanks for caring about what you do. I recognize your efforts and I'm sure others do as well. I will continue to dine here.

Was craving some Asian food and since I have never tried this chain, decided to grab lunch here. I ordered a simple teriyaki chicken with white rice figuring that should be a safe bet and cannot be messed up. While the sauce was typical sweet teriyaki sauce the chicken was bland. The worst part for me was that parts of my rice were uncooked. I could taste the hard raw rice mixed in with the cooked rice as I chewed. That definitely turned me off. I can deal with bland and generic, but uncooked food is another story.

Easy and quick and it tastes pretty darn good too. The employees were super helpful and the restaurant was crazy clean! I think the prices were a little on the high side, I probably could have gotten out cheaper at the authentic place on the corner.

I am very easy to please. Give me free, decently-fast wi-fi; healthy, good and decently-priced food and a variety of iced teas to choose from and I am pretty much all set. A fast and very pleasant staff helps too. That's not to say Tokyo Joe's doesn't have an occasional miss. Tried their Ichigo (Japanese for strawberry) Salad and have to say it was great accept that they used kale as their main green. Love cooked kale but don't like it raw apparently. And while their bowls are generally good, I do get an occasional one with two much cartilage in the chicken or really gummy rice. But they also give student discounts and free bowls after a certain amount of holes are punched in a card. I am a sucker for discounts too.

I frequent this location at Capital Hill and enjoy the urban time there. Enjoyed the music and complete ambience while there. Food was decent as I expect it, server was helpful and even brought me some more teriyaki sauce. Tried the salmon and shrimp sushi (no rice!!!) Overall good experience though wish I could be brave enough to try other dishes when I go.

Good Healthy food, good device, but SOMETIMES the music is too loud. But when it's warm, I grab a table outside.

My buddy in Denver is obsessed with Tokyo Joes. As such, I have been to several locations around the metro area before finally hitting this one...ironically, closest to his apartment. Service here was really friendly, as it has been in all of my T.J. experiences. There are lots of choices, but I always create my own bowl. This time I wanted to keep it basic - white chicken, brown rice, peanut sauce, and various veggies. It came out quickly, and was very tasty. T.J. is nothing unique, nothing out of this world, nothing groundbreaking. But it's solid, fast, affordable, filling, and sold by friendly people. I'll take that combo any day.

I used to go here for take out and I have experienced quite a few mess ups with my order and didn't know about it until I got home, which made me really mad. I have found their sauce extremely sweet and overpowering which ruins the entire dish as they do pour a lot on. I noticed that their portions has gotten smaller and I never found their food to be very satisfying (nor a good deal anymore). I do like their side salads with the sesame dressing. Their sushi is very mediocre and a bit overpriced for what you are getting. If I wanted sushi I would go to a sushi restaurant. If you do go there, be sure to ask for your sauce on the side, and if you do take out be sure to check your bag before leaving the restaurant. I no longer eat there and my favorite quick japanese restaurant is Kokoro's by far.

It's cheap and easy, just like I like my women. What? Wait. The ONLY time I've visited Tokyo Joe's on Grant has been during the dreaded lunch hour. And when I stop in there, it's because I'm in a hurry, but I don't want fast food, and I'm temporarily over Panera. So yes, the wait sucks. Their food is OK, and I'd probably recommend the bowls over say, their sushi options, which I keep ordering despite repeatedly thinking to myself, "The hell?" Yeah, the sushi leaves much to be desired. Bland. But, it's Tokyo Joe's, so it's not like I was expecting to be blown over, either. The folks who work there are friendly enough, and the seating options are bountiful (both indoor and out). But yeah, it's not somewhere I would make a real effort to go to unless stuck in that vortex of not wanting fast food yet not having time for a sit down meal, either.

I remember going to the first Tokyo Joe's years ago when they opened. I'm so happy to see such a delicious, healthy quick meal option doing so well. I come to this location a couple times a month, usually, due to the friendly staff, numerous options, and great location. I tend to mix it up when it comes to what I order, sometimes sushi, other times I'll create my own bowl. I love the spicy-aki sauce, and the sushi is really good for the price and speed in which you get it (it's pretty tough to get good sushi quickly, I've noticed). I will continue to frequent this location and fill up my "Addict" card (ask about it if you go there often)!

Yeah, like other reviewers have noted it's a cheap alternative for fast food, but that's about it. I've been to Tokyo Joes three occasions because of my friends. Each time I was disappointed: disappointed with myself for having friends who like the food there and disappointed by the food. If your in the area and want something with an asian appeal go to Pho-antic on Colfax & Grant two blocks away. They don't need to drown everything in sugary fructose sauces.

3 stars for the food (chicken rice bowls with the standard veggie mix and spiciyaki rule our sophisticated alien palates). I've also tried their shrimp and steak and both are quite good as well. I have not tried anything with a "fu" added to it. Sorry you non-meat eaters will have to experiment with that it on your own. I also gave this location an extra star because one of the guys working there looks like Screech from "Saved By The Bell" and I do so enjoy watching him flub his lines. Bwah ha ha ha haaaa! If he leaves, let me know and I'll adjust my rating...

It's quick, cheap, and semi-healthy. What's more to want? They have lots of different food options...I can only eat Subway and salads for so many days at lunch, so Tokyo Joe's is my other not-too-crappy-for-you option on my lunch break. I'll be back I'm sure..

  • Stanly W.

Almost gave this a one star. Food's good. The people are horrid. Every single time I've gone there, the people behind the counter stare at me as if I were about to ask them for money. There's one guy there that I honestly wanted to slug one time because he was such a downer. Scowling at me. Couldn't believe it. The girls are just as bad. Sulking. "Here's yer food now git outta here" attitudes. They're lucky they have the business lunch-time crowd or there'd be a "FOR RENT" sign in their window within a month. Raspberries.

You know, I try this place every now and again, and I am reminded why I'm not a regular despite the close proximity. It's not the vibe. I don't really care if you have piercings, tattoos and dreads. I wouldn't expect anything less in Cap Hill. It's the food, and the sanitation. I've had undercooked chicken, undercooked rice, but today takes the cake. I went in to go buy a rice bowl, and asked for a cup of water, only to find out they are out of running water. Nevermind, how do you cook rice without water, I'm wondering what kind of savvy restauranteur is running a restaurant without running water? How are your employees washing their hands after they use the bathroom? Your employees were nice but still, gross. Any manager who chooses to keep open his restaurant at the cost of health, safety and quality is running a business I would not like to frequent. Not cool Tokyo Joe's, not cool at all.

I was really pleasantly surprised by Tokyo Joe's. Okay, caveats: don't go in expecting fresh, high-end sushi or sashimi... this is not that kind of joint. If you want a relatively healthy, tasty alternative to fast food, that's reasonably priced and japanese-ish in flavor, go here. I recommend their specialty bowls, like the Mahi-Mahi or MOJOE bowls over brown rice. Plus, can you get Sopporo's or Kirin's at Micky D's? I didn't think so.

The greatest thing about this place is sitting on the patio during the summer and counting how many cars successfully parallel-park their cars... in front of the fire hydrant. The fun part is watching the drivers get angry as they notice they just spent two minutes back-and-forthing, only to have to immediately vacate the spot. And then there's the food. I mean, it's your typical Tokyo Joe's. They have good sushi, and good chicken skewers. That's about all I eat there. Oh and sometimes I go for the spring rolls, but I'm always disappointed that they put just a slice of shrimp in there. Come on, you could at least put a whole shrimp in there. I feel ripped off. The desserts are better left than taken. And the soup is delicious.

Love toke's. eat here at least once a week (@ the superior location - the cap-hill location is the least consistent, i have found). quality ingredients, reasonable prices, usually quick. they encourage inked up art f*cks to work here. people who complain that it's not authentic japanese are missing the point, entirely. it is a healthy alternative to fried fare at fast food joints. choose your bowl, make sure to get at least one extra sauce (free!) and notice how long it takes you to get hungry again after filling up on lean protein and brown rice. an added bonus is that their to-go containers are like full blown tupperware - microwave safe storage bowls, with lid, for free.

I'm still trying to understand what all the fuss is about over Tokyo Joe's. It's glorified stir-fry and I think I'm done with it. I tried to get into it because it is relatively healthy as far as fast food goes but it really isn't much better than what you'd find in a prepared noodle bowl at the grocery store. I would come here more often if it weren't ridiculously overpriced. The bowls are decent; haven't tried the sushi but it looks neither here nor there. Stars for decent selection of drinks/tea and the chicken. Sauces and veggies are nothing to rave about. And others have said it and I'll say it again: if you do choose to come here, don't come during weekday lunch hours. The line is out the door. I'm not quite sure why there's such a crowd--they have all the registers open and at least 3 chefs in the back. What's more, the staff know it. They look so frazzled and seem to have reached an impasse in service. Oh, and to the tattooed buddy who likes to show off his leg hair: There's a reason restaurant servers don't wear shorts--it's called hygiene.

This was my favorite Tokyo Joe's to eat at when I lived in Downtown Denver. The people who work there are very nice and get your order out to you quickly. My favorite food was getting some california rolls, cucumber salad, and the chicken bowl. Quick, healthy, and delicious.

  • Dayna B.

Tokyo Joe's is right now in the running for my favorite chain restaurant. I've only tried the bowls: fresh veggies, rice like you like it and your choice of meat and sauce (or not). The brown rice and veggies were impressive -- maybe not for the Colorado dining-scape where these things are easy to come by, but I've been away for awhile living in Chicago where they treat veggies like a condiment -- so I was impressed that they were cut right (morsel size) and steamed right (al dente). No complaints. Quick, good and guilt-free.

Tried the gluten free curry sauce with my standard joe's bowl today... tasty and great to have a new gf sauce choice. Now if only they'd do the spicy-yaki gluten free, i'd be a happy camper.

As long as you're not ordering sushi and just sticking with the bowls you'll be fine.

what's wrong with Tokyo Joe's? not much except the sushi. i've always thought the bowls here are decent. i've landed on the yakisoba as my favorite officially. their sauce is pretty tasty, and it's good to change it up on the rice. noodles always win. couldn't quite give it a four, but 3.5 is pretty accurate IMO...
