Used the free margarita upon checkin with yelp! Margarita and chips with salsa were best part of meal.... Chili relleno was terrible and others in my group didn't finish their enchiladas . Service was very slow and unresponsive. One table left next to us...

I've given two stars which is generous. Ordered delivery, the third party service they use took an hour and a half. The food was cold and didn't taste good at all. They also forgot half of my order and I told them to just keep it. I won't order here again and I know tons of better "Mexican" food places in Denver anyway.

Given all of the restaurants available in the immediate area, I regret picking this one. It was mediocre at best. Starting with the chips and salsa, it was hit or miss whether the chip you'd pick was stale or not. I ordered the supposed "award winning" Chili Verde and it was appalling. I doubt there was even 1 ounce of pork in the dish. The sauce was watery and impossible to put on a tortilla - it would just run off the ends of the tortilla. I asked for corn tortillas and was brought flour tortillas. Even with the sauce that watery, I had to hunt to find any pork on the plate at all. This was one of the worst Mexican restaurant experiences I've had.

Sooo servers are ok-ish, the kitchen is slow as molasses! We got here 40 minutes ago and i have a view of the kitchen and there has literally been no activity until just now when three men and a woman came in and put gloves on. Free margarita, great. $4 happy hour margarita, great. 5 cubes of fish between two tacos in my $13 fish tacos (with way gross oily cabbage). My husband is not a picky person and he did not enjoy this beef enchiladas. Asked for the check several times... This is a an absolute suprise. Unless you are cool to spend the evening here for mediocre food, do not come here!

This place really is terrible. I have been there 4 times, because I live right by there, and they have literally screwed up my order all 4 times. The shrimp was inedible. They could not care less about their customers. I know this because I have complained and they have done nothing.

  • Sheila S.

I love the food. I have been a regular since they opened. However their prices just keep going up. It's not affordable to go there for lunch on a regular basis any longer. Please stop raising your prices!

After ordering we waited for an hour and a half and never got our food. So we left.

The service was extremely slow and the food was just ok. They did honor the free margarita coupon after I checked in on yelp. I wouldn't recommend this place I'm sure there is better Mexican food somewhere else.

To start with there were 4 in our party. We were seated at a 4 top table, I think a booth would have been roomier for the group. It took a while for the waitress to take our order and when she did we never got it after an hour and a half, yep that's right (1 hour 30 minutes) We inquired about our order several times and was told that it would be out soon. I noticed a party of 4 that arrived a long time after we arrived had received their meal. I asked to speak to the manager, who never came to the table. We ended leaving and going to a restaurant down the mall and were served an excellent meal in a timely manner!

First time visit to Diego's and will never go back! Put in our order and then waited for an hour and a half and still have not gotten our food. We asked to talk to the manager and he never did come to our table, so we finally just left. By reading numerous reviews I'm glad we didn't eat there.

Walked in this establishment, got a table and went to use the restroom with my girlfriend. I was washing my hands when a man pokes his head in the restroom and asks us if we are smoking pot!! I said absolutely not I gave him attitude because a man had no right to be in a women's restroom, I was shocked when he identified himself as the OWNER!!! He continued to harass and asked again if we were smoking, I told the party I was with that I was leaving, I refuse to give a place like that my business, I have never been treated like that by a business owner in my life! I didn't have a chance to try the food but looking at the reviews it looks like I didn't miss anything!

Great atmosphere here. Was with two others, sat in a booth against the wall. Wasn't too busy but cozy and open. Had a house margarita which they homered the yelp coupon for one free house margarita with check in, was refreshing with a good amount of tequila lol. Had three enchiladas, chicken, beef, pork. Beef was very good. Only thing would be to ease up on the fluids on the dish. In the beginning of the dish it felt like there was a lot of sauce on the plate. Chips and salsa was fresh too, they gave all three of us our own salsa dish which was cool. My favorite part was prolly the churros we had at the end. Very well made and I enjoyed the side of whipped cream that came with. If you like Mexican, it's worth your journey!

This place sucks!!!! I ordered a margarita, not straight tequila... I couldn't enjoy my drink cause it was way too strong. The "con queso" dip sucks as well. It's white cheese, not the yellow and it's super runny like they put water in it to make more, instead of making a new batch. I got the chicken flautas and they smelled weird and the chicken tastes funky! Also the atmosphere feels weird too. Homeless people walk through the restaurant and there are codes on the bathrooms so they don't get in, but they will wait till you open the door.

When I go to a restaurant with a Yelp review in mind I always give the place a 5* in my mind and then work down if necessary. While I sitting in Diego's I dinged them a point for the not-very-interesting food and would have probably dinged them another point for the dull atmosphere, although the waiter was very friendly. But before I got around to writing the review I discovered something more important: the waiter doubled his tip when he processed my credit card payment. I signed a bill with a $3 tip on a bill that totaled (with tax) $16.66 = $19.66. What showed up on my credit card statement is $22.66. But the story gets better: printed on the receipt is the helpful suggestion that a 18% tip would be $6.00. Buyer beware, as they say.

I got the steak burrito. Not knowing the heat of their green chile, I ordered the mild. I've never tasted green chile with absolutely no flavor before...until today. The steak inside the burrito was tender; the chips were good; could barely tell there was any cheese and the refried beans were sloppy and runny with, again, no flavor. I most likely won't be back.

  • Jamie C.

Overpriced and the food isn't as authentic in my opinion. They offer three levels of spice and hot is not even hot at all! Very disappointed. They get stars for great service though, there as always someone asking if we needed anything and apparently the happy hour is fun. I'll have to go back for that.

I've been coming here for years and the place is always clean, nice and quiet, and always has good texmex. The yelp check in is awesome (free margarita with entree purchase!) and Janeth is a great server. Very attentive, friendly, and great to here she's interested in the industry (she told me a funny story about her TIPS class).

  • Jordan R.

SALSA! They have this thing called a bar, it has many salsas on it. They are delicious. I do recommend the tacos. Any of them will do. Also, if you check in you get a free margarita. Now they aren't Rio margs, but they are good and they aren't stingy on the tequila. They list a star from me based on service Its hit or miss. We had a great server one day and a horrible one, complete with the worst b.o. ever. Otherwise, pretty solid.

I'm out of town from Washington DC, and I'm a huge foodie! This was the worst customer service experience I have ever had! The manager literally came over and asked if everything was "okay" and when everyone at the table said "NO!" He proceeded to say "oh great, just checking" and walked away!! The food wasn't anything special, definitely not worth the time or effort dealing with terrible staff on vacation.

Wow - I didn't realize that I wrote a review of Diego's from my last visit. As my original review mentions, my first experience was fantastic but my second experience was horrid. After a month of "boycotting" Diego's, I finally got up the courage to swallow my pride & return. And I am SOOOO happy I did! So, from this point on, I won't even register my second visit as a true & tried experience. My first & third were consistent with great service, excellent Mexican food, and an inviting, social atmosphere. Definitely a special shout-out to Tony (lead server) & Marcus for this genuine hospitality to fix my issue and assure me that the previous time I dined with this is not their usual plan of action or sought level of service. It's our favorite Mexican restaurant in Denver!

Beware of the fine print!! $10 food purchase before the deal kicks in. Happy hour is cheaper and better deal!!!!

Cinqo de Mayo This restaurant is located along the 16th street mall in Denver CO. Authentic Mexican food at reasonable prices. Happy hour with $5 Mojitos with a generous pour of white rum. We had soft tacos of shredded beef and chicken. Large portions and very friendly service. The bar are was very active with many young people from the local university. Worth a look if you are in South Denver.

The food was perfect and our waiter was so nice. Everyone was so friendly, clean and just a great atmosphere. Perfect place for lunch since service was so quick. I will certainly visit this place again in the future. Love it!

Outstanding taste! We just happened upon this place our first night of vacation and we are so glad to have visited. All the tastes popped and the plates are very filling. We recommend their "green" salsa when given the choice.

Ive seen the employee outside upstairs by the restaurant for months handing out Cards for Happy Hour. Me and My Cousin decided to venture in after this place called WOW Rice and Roll displays they are open but are nowhere to be found in the Champa Center yet. 5 Carnitas tacos for 5 dollars cant be beat. Though Neither of us ordered that. We were quickly seated, The server brought us chips and salsa and said have fun at the salsa bar to liven up our meal. Well Thank you Kind Sir I shall. He ordered the Chimichanga plate which was on for HH. I ordered a Steak Smothered Burrito Christmas Style. The Customer Service is Great. My Sprite didn't taste right so she took it back. And the Syrup ran out. Brought me back a Mr Pibb and didn't charge me for the soda. On to my burrito. I was expecting bite size pieces of steak. NOPE. IT had strips of steak inside, I was impressed. And it was good. Better than Chubbys good and you know your getting a quality burrito. And if you request Sour Cream they oblige and don't charge you for it. The Rice and beans were flavorful. I topped it with Joppin Jalapenos and they gave my burrito the nice little kick i needed. We both ordered the Bread pudding with a Horchata Sauce. And it was delicious. The bread pudding could of been a little bigger serving. But for 4.00 it was decent with fresh strawberries and moist with raisins. It was simple and not to fancy just a good piece of bread pudding. They Have TVs inside and outside on the patio which is closed off for those wintry days which will be soon upon us. The HH specials are displayed and the Servers are knowledgeable in the specials for the day. Even the Bartender came out to greet us ask how our meal was and ask if we needed anything else. I Will be back to this one in the near future.

Fun place to hangout during the day. It was empty when we got there. They have giant Jenga. They gave me a free house margarita for checking in on yelp. The margaritas were delicious.

  • Keith H.

The service was good at the establishment. Everyone seemed nice, but the food was awful in my opinion. Very expensive for what you got, and just not good at all. I ordered Marco's tacos with steak and chicken. They came as only the steak tacos. I decided to not fool with the foul up and to eat the steak tacos. The meat seemed as if it had absolutely no seasoning whatsoever, and seemed as if it was microwaved, pre cut steak. There was no sear, and no flavor. For tacos that are $12.99 for two tacos, I thought that was terrible. There is a taco stand outside of Cold Crush that destroys these tacos, for $2 a taco. The signature margarita tasted like it was from a mix. Disappointed!

Five of us came out, flew in from San Diego so used to legit Mexican food. Not impressed. Margaritas were bad, food wasn't that great. Cheap prices though!!! Right in downtown Denver near hotel & convention center so a convenient location. Service wasn't bad. Food came out fast but..taste-wise, no bueno. 3 stars.

Excellent service by Katie. Very attentive and personable. Location is very convenient to downtown hotels. Food was served quick and hot.

Great Tex Mex food and good service. And their Mojitos are fabulous! The server was very thorough about what we wanted and made sure we were happy with our order. And the salsa bar was a nice touch.

  • Josh K.

Meh, its typically bland, overpriced under seasoned mexican food that only survives because it is downtown and people tend to overpay and ask for less when they are down there. Service is slow at best, and food is pretty tastless. Id only stop in for a margarita or two which they seem to get right occasionally.

Ate here earlier with my kids. I'm here from California, Central Valley. Texas native too. So, from someone who knows their Mexican food better than most. This place is 4*. Ok. Not bad, not amazing. The service is great and the Chile Verde is great. The prices are decent and I cant complain. I would defintely go back. Gotta claim my free margarita. Lol

  • Robert R.

We stopped in for lunch today, and we had a terrible experience. The service was slow with a very sparse crowd in the restaurant. The server had to be asked multiple times for any request - drink refills etc. One person in our group of three was still served flour tortillas even after expressing a gluten allergy. The posole soup had lots of ingredients but almost no flavor. I will not visit here again.

  • Brittany S.

I go here pretty frequently when I am downtown. Entrees are delicious, food always comes out hot. FREE SALSA BAR with lots of yummy things to try. 2 for one margaritas everyday all day and they're not wimpy either. Only reason they don't get a five is because service is hit or miss at night time which is usually when I go and it's not inexpensive. Great service for businessmen in a hurry during the day

  • Emily E.

Diego's staff, atmosphere & food were GREAT! Stroll up and down 16th street mall & then stop in Diego's for a bite and you will not be disappointed. They have a great salsa bar with a variety of salsas for your chips and food.

  • Nicole S.

Diego's is really hit or miss. Sometimes it is great, sometimes it is terrible. It seems like sometimes when I go there, the service is excellent. Food comes quickly, good waiters, etc. Other times they really miss. Yesterday we were sat in a section of their restaurant that was freezing. They couldn't quite close the doors all the way I guess? But, if you can't keep a section of the restaurant warm, you shouldn't seat people in that section, especially if there are other open table, which there were. We had to ask to be moved. On top of that, it probably took thirty minutes for our food to come out. Our waitress was nice and got everyone's order correct, but the delayed food and freezing offset the good things. Overall, the food is pretty standard Mexican restaurant food, good, nothing that stands out especially. Pricing is pretty comparable to most other Mexican restaurants. Overall, it is just okay, not great, not bad.

  • Lynne P.

2 for 1 margaritas during happy hour! Yes please! Please note: the nacho appetizer is not a plate of chips with heaping toppings, like we've all come to expect from nachos. Instead, these are little individual nachos arranged on a plate. Definitely okay - just not what I was expecting at all!

  • Ethan M.

I waited to review Diego's until I had several visits in my belly. Each visit was met with attentive and friendly staff. Food was accurate and as as expected, except for ONCE the chicken was flavorful. Most places chicken is bland side from the sauces or breading; and if it's breaded the sauce is the feature of flavor. My most memorable experience was a group of coworkers wanted to meet for a going away dinner. The staff was extremely friendly and patient attentive without ignoring other guests AND then the server asked if we would like separate bills? There were 12 or more of us! We all left hefty tips and since then Diego's is a sure bet for food when Im in the area. I can't speak to the drinks, but my friends seem to think they are great! The salsa bar is pretty handy.

Sorry but I can't give them a good rating. Everything here is out of the can. And it's not fresh. I tried to give then a second chance and they failed again.

Came here on a Thursday night but not expecting much more than just another downtown bar. However, I was very impressed by my bartender, Jeremy's manner and service. Having worked in the service industry myself, I still thought my food and service were way above average, and I think Diego's will be in my plans a lot in the future because of it.

This place has awesome house and mango margaritas! I ordered Diego's Cheese Enchiladas and they were delicious. Exactly what I was looking for. Great happy hour.

This was by far one of the worst experiences I have ever had at a Mexican Restaurant. It is hidden in the basement for a reason... The 'house' margarita, which was advertised as by-one-get-one, was absolutely TERRIBLE. You will pay $8 for a pre-made margarita that comes out of an Icee Machine. The chips and salsa were also bad. I didn't even know you could mess up chips and salsa, but they managed it. The chips were crushed to a point that you couldn't even dip them in the salsa, which was overly chunky and didn't really taste like anything. As far as food goes, we took the hint from the drinks and appetizers and didn't order anything else. The cheap tequila used in the margarita made me nauseous and I had to trek down a long hallway only to find the bathroom was communally shared with other shops and required a passcode to unlock. I have never been so happy to pay the bill just so I could leave the restaurant. Outside of the friendly staff, there was nothing good about this place. I will not be going back.

Stopped in the other day for a few drinks. Julia was our bar tender and thank goodness! She makes the best margs hands down in denver! She was very attentive and I was never left with an empty drink or a dull moment. She cracks me up! Fingers crossed we luck out and get her on our next outting!!

I ate hear once and will do my best to avoid it again. I drank here another time and will do my best to avoid it again. For this average and ordinary Mexican "Cantina" to make it, it will need to continue to appeal to business out of towners swoon by their appetite for Mexican food who are either not familiar with the area or too short on time for the Mall Ride to Rio Grande, and the highly-annoying consistent barking of an employee with 2-for-1 margarita coupons at the passing pedestrians along the 16th Street Mall. C'mon, now? That has to be the lamest marketing effort I've seen by a non-Cash for Gold business in some time downtown. And please don't bother with one of these 2-for-1 premade, frozen drinks as I'm sure you could make a batch at your house both more delicious and stronger. If you do go just for drinks and don't want anything to eat though, I highly recommend getting the chips and salsa... not because they are yummy... but because you will get asked at least 10 times from a variety of staff members for "more chips?" as you try to get down your glorified alcoholic snow cone aka house frozen margarita so you can leave.

Terrible service. My fiance told them he was a vegetarian and they assured him that his dish would be meatless. And what did we find, you ask??? A big ole chunk of shredded pork in his rice, THAT'S WHAT. The service was pure unfiltered ass and the only reason I gave it two stars is because my quesadilla was decent and the Chalula was plentiful. The host was also a sweetheart. He was obviously trying to put his best foot forward in a restaurant that seemed to have been abandoned three weeks ago and taken over by lazy, creepy, senseless jerks.

Janeth is an awesome server and our food was delicious! I had the sope and soup (pazole) which were both really good. I am a big fanof pazole and theirs was definitely authentic. The only thing that would make it better is if or were served with sliced radishes, cabbage and avocado slices... oh well, it was still delicious. Beef on their menu is automatically ground but they do have really good shredded beef so make sure you ask for it.

We went there on Father's day, I could kind of tell from looking at the menu that it wouldn't be great but we decided to try it anyway. There were 3 of us and we all ordered different items. None of us liked our food, it was just very generic Mexican food that I couldn't even eat. They have a salsa bar with like Four different salsas but they were all horrible. The chips were OK but didn't eat too many with the salsa. The service was good and friendly just a big disappointment in the food.

A local recommended this place highly. Being on 16th and Champa, I worried it'd be too touristy. Nope- nice, basement-y friendly local vibe here. Huge too- might be a great place for parties. And, I do mean huge. You can lose a football team, the parents, the cheerleaders, and the stands in this place!

Menu wasn't too exciting so went with the carnitads. Little dry, but large portion. Only came with 2 tortilas, so had to order more. Portion was large enough to make 5. Margaritas were only $5 as it was HH, they were tasty and 3 had me buzzn. Good service, price was right.

Then our server came over to take our food order , we wait for about 1 hr to have or food deliver or us , to be honest food wasn't that great , they service suck big time , we were very disappoint at this point , I don't think we ever coming back to place where they don't have a good service at all ,manager doing her thing , host no were to be found to seat futures costumers , SO DISAPPOINT OF THIS PLACE WE HEAR SO GOOD REVIEWS NOT HAPPY AT ALL OF OR TIME THERE !!! Good luck !!

I think this place may have been awesome in its hey day. But hey - those days seem to be long gone. I ordered the combo fajitas - and honestly a chain like Chili's or TGIF might do better. I was under the poor assumption that this would be more "authentic". It was. Authentically bland and tasteless. Even the side dishes like the rice and beans were a waste of plate space. They seemed to be just for garnish and not really part of a nice compliment to the meal. It's a slow night. So I seem to have 3 or 4 servers - but they are mostly courteous and attentive. Go here for a quick drink and maybe a snack. Just don't expect much and your expectations will be met.

Exceptional! I order Happy Hour food for our office weekly. I always try to find a local small business that we can try and establish relationships with. After working with the owner to order a spread and variety, it was delivered on time, hot, with utensils, and awesome service! Everyone liked the authentic Mexican food! It was a hit and we will definitely be utilizing Deigo's in the future. Thank you again!

If I could give zero stars I would have. This place is HORRIBLE!!!! Location was great but after we sat we realized the chairs on the patio were so uncomfortable. After about 15 minutes a server came up and said "maybe you are my table... I don't know... what do you want to drink." Very personable....?? We ordered a cheese dip... it came with our meal. My water stayed empty throughout the meal. The food was inedible. Just nasty. Chips were store bought and stale. Dip was fake cheese, chicken soup was GROSS, my enchilada never came so I can't even comment on that. STAY AWAY!!!!

The horchata does not taste that bad consideringg this is a tex mex type of place. I had the enchiladas and the chips and salsa are not bad. Would defitnetley return.

The food was good, drinks weren't so great. We made him re make them, which turned out good. I just think you guys need more cover on the bar, the bartender was the only in the section helping. Came, during dinner on a Saturday!!

Cheap cheap cheap. My wife and I were walking down the 16th St. Mall and were handed a flyer advertising 5 soft tacos for $5. Having just moved to Denver and in need of some cheap eats we decided just to go for it. Walked in and were seated immediately at a table that was in very poor repair. You know how sometimes people stuff napkins or sweet & low packets beneath the table leg to make it level? I would've needed to take my shoe off and put it under there to make this table level. Anyway, the hostess noticed how wobbly it was and proceeded to tell us that our server would be right over! Anyway, once our server came we opted to move to different table and he alerted the management to not seat anyone at that table until it was fixed. We ordered our 5 soft tacos (we chose 3 shredded chicken and 2 pork) and an order of Spanish rice. We were given chips and salsa to munch on in the meantime. The quality of the chips and salsa was just kind of blahhh and the salsa bar was ok. The pico de gallo didn't even really taste very fresh. We got our tacos and never received the rice. Having forgotten about it until we were about half way finished eating we decided not to remind our server and just see what happened. He never mentioned it! I'm pretty sure (based on experience as a server) that he saw it on his screen after we asked for the check and had his manager void it and just never mentioned it to us at all! Anyway, he was a nice enough guy, just not a great server especially considering how dead it was inside. Quality food starts with quality ingredients and that isn't happening here. I wholeheartedly believe that you can still make food affordable whilst maintaining quality. Diego's is not achieving that. You can get much better food at the same price level at a carnicería. Cheap food that tastes cheap.

We stopped in because of the guy on the sidewalk hawking people with the 2 for 1 margaritas. The drinks were so-so. They had a free salsa bar, but it needed to be restocked the entire time we were there.

Loud music and chili rellanos as tough as leather. However, great service, salsa bar, Negro Modelo on tap in two sizes did not make up for that rellano. .I would suggest a modelo on tap and a basket of chips and salsa.

I really enjoy Diego's. I have yet to go after hours but I have gone several times during my work day. I enjoy the service and the servers (ay Papi) and the food has always been pleasant. I've also tried their breakfast burritos. They are okay. Nothing special but not disappointing.

Just returned from lunch here with a former co-worker. I'm pretty sure I won't be returning again. FOR: * The food is pretty inexpensive. * We were seated immediately. NEUTRAL: * The waiter was extremely friendly, but nearly to the point of being irritatingly cheerful. I generally find that off-putting, but maybe I'm just a dick. AGAINST: * The food was spectacularly bland. Everything from the entree to the salsa, just bland bland bland. And everything tasted basically the same, like it was "Mexican Food Purée" in varying levels of liquidity. * Before ordering, we spotted a spectacularly large insect taking a leisurely stroll across the dining room floor. Literally the size of a mouse. I didn't think cockroaches got that big, unless it was a Madagascar hissing roach, or something. It was big. Right there in the open. We watched it for a while, both my friend and I too lazy to get up and leave, despite our shared disgust, when the waiter arrived to take our order. He followed our gaze, and quickly excused himself to take care of the intruder. Let's just hope it doesn't wind up in the green chili. Which was also bland.

I'll get the usual out f the way first: It's a standard Texi-Mexi beans and rice stop. Not bad, not great, just sorta does the job. That said, I really did like the salsa bar. great variety and an easy way to liven up some food. Something for all salsa lovers, mild to blazin, sweet to smokey. Pricing was good, especially for downtown, but the overall flavor quality was probably on par with that price point. A definite step up from some of the the nearby fast food options, but not much!

I agree with most of the reviews - this is pretty run-of-the mill mexican food. It definitely didn't blow me away, but it was filling, fast, convenient and reasonably priced. I came here for lunch with some friends. Unfortunately, we all had to work later so no one ordered a marg. Boo! Next time. Anyway, I ordered the veggie fajitas. The service was fast and efficient, which I appreciate. Our food came out quickly and the fajitas were pretty good. The veggies were pretty oily, which is pretty standard for fajitas I guess, but all the flavors were decent. It was a little bland for my palate, but I really like things spicy. I helped myself to the salsa bar, which I liked. I will say that something on my plate, and I suspect it was the guacamole, had WAY too much cumin. I like cumin, but someone was using a heavy hand, and it really overpowered everything else. Did not care for that. Otherwise, this is a decent spot for lunch and the menu is pretty large, so there's a little something for everyone (even vegetarians)! I would come here again, especially for a happy hour when I could indulge in some serious margarita action!

I can not believe the horrible bar service I received..... I came in with costume hair and the bar tender immediately "cut me off" assuming I was too drink!? I spoke to the manager and they said the bar tender would give me one drink to test out my level. This place is ridiculous and I will never go back. I will also note this to every person I know to never go there because they are assumptive and rude. Hope I find a Mexican place around here to fulfill my needs!!

either you obviously smoked pot before you came here or you have lost your taste buds if you thought this was a decent place. not real mexican food... not even close to tex-mex... so what is it? absolute garbage. if you smoke up and have no taste buds then yes! if you like real food, then absolutely no!!!

I worked in lodo so this place was a convenient place to meet my husband for a few drinks after work. I've honestly never had good Mexican food in Denver but the margaritas were good and after you're a bit tipsy the food isn't too bad. It's quite dark but Service is fast (which was good enough for me). All in all the place is nothing to scream about.

I visited the Mile High City this past weekend for an event conference with my Internet Marketing Community. We frequented Diego's while there because of their great drinks, service, and hours! It was also in a great location, walking distance for the Convention Center and our Hotel (the Sheraton Downtown). We didn't eat any meals really but did have appetizers, desserts, and such. . . The desserts and 2 for 1 drinks were GREAT!!!! This is a nice place to meet up with your friends after a long day at the Convention Center. . . Me and about 6K of my fellow Internet Marketers took to the streets of Denver July 18-23 and we had a great time. The service was always very good. I would go back to Diego's any time! I must be on a Mexican kick lately. Just noticing a pattern in my reviews. A work colleague raves over the moon about Diego's. Three of us decided to take a long lunch at Diego's. At the corner of 16th and Champa you go downstairs and enter Diego's. Is it a secret because it's underground? Hmmm... Our waiter was efficient and super cute and could remember our pretty complicated order without writing it down, nicely done sir. We all ordered a lunch combo. I ordered one with a Chile relleno, chicken enchilada with green sauce, and a crispy chicken taco. Everything was delicious. The crispy taco was really the shining star of this dish, fresh, crispy, with fresh lettuce and tomato's on top and I was in heaven. The Chile relleno was crispy and stuffed nicely with melty ooey gooey cheese. The green Chile was uber spicy, you can pick your level of spiciness and I choose hot. If you like heat you'll love it. The chips and salsa served to the table were also very good. They serve a mild and a spicy salsa, if you know me I went spicy all the way. Love that tingly feeling on my lips and tongue. Makes you feel alive. I think lunch was about $12 per person. Pretty great price for the large quantity and quality of the food we received. I here the Margs are strong and delicious - I will have to come back when I don't have to go back to work to give them a try.

I've stopped by here a few times over the last few years when in Denver and I have been pleasantly surprised with the food and service. This time I ran in at about 9pm after a 29 hour travel day from Europe. Was pleasantly surprised by the warm and friendly greeting from the wait staff, even though they we starting to clean up for the 10pm closing. The chips and salsa are wonderful, and the carnita and chicken tacos I had were good! They were much larger than I was expecting and I ended up not needing the cheese enchilada I ordered along with them. Beer was cold, staff friendly, food good. I will continue to eat here when in Denver!

So say you are stumbling, I mean walking in a very straight line, down the 16th street mall with a bunch of friends when someone says "I'm hungry" and another someone says "Yeah a margaritas sound amazing" Despite the fact that a margarita is no where near the food pyramid and even Charlie Sheen doesn't count it toward his fruit intake for the day, everyone says "OH good idea" Then Diego's is perfect for you. Not that when I went it was anything like the above situation but, well, actually, to be honest, it was exactly like that. This place is great for the drinks, the chips keep coming and the appetizers are fantastic, lets call it, tipsy food. We have a blast here and I would recommend it for any such occasion.

Some friends of mine and myself went here the other day. We were in downtown Denver for their annual Zombie Crawl which is along the 16th Street Mall every year. When you are with a bunch of people it is hard to all get in synch with where you want to go eat and such but my entourage settled here which was a good choice...all zombied out in make up and costume. Diego's is downstairs off of 16th and Champa on a corner. I don't often go to this mall but I have been here enough and never noticed it. The food here seems like chain restaurant Mexican food but I actually liked it! The green chile on my chile relleno had a nice bite to it and I enjoyed my guacamole tostada too! The margaritas are strong and go down nice and easy and are addicting enough to get many more...even the more inexpensive one too! While there are more authentic Mexican places in town for sure, Diego's is not a bad choice if you are along the mall and you and your party decide on food south of the border.

I ordered chicken enchiladas from Diego's. The price on the menu was 8.99 and when I got my check, it was over 16 dollars! You can imagine my surprise. When I asked the waitress (thinking it surely was a mistake), she told me that I was charged for grilled chicken, even though meat was supposedly included in the price (and twice because there were two enchiladas!!) and that sour cream and guac were an extra dollar each. There was no mention of this while I was ordering... I was shocked, and I will never go back there.

  • Katrina H.

Food was average Mexican flavor. There was one waiter for the entire place and the bus boy was trying to help out. This turned out to be a challenge when served fajitas without the "fillings." It took a long time to actually get the whole meal. Margaritas were great and priced right during Happy Hour...Buy One Get One Free!

I've been here several times now for lunches and happy hour's- all visit's have been great. The Margs are decent, the salsa bar during happy hour is awesome! They always give two salsa's but the bar during happy hour has lot's of different types to try out. The breakfast burritos are really good! (and $2) Service has always been great.

  • Devavrat O.

If you're in downtown and are looking for a quick and less expensive Mexican meal, this is the place! Try their breakfast burrito smothered with green chile and you'll love the potato home crisps that come with it. They have a salsa bar where you can try different salsas for your nachos or entree.

This was my first visit and I was very impressed. I went on my lunch hour so I had limited time. The service was very friendly and extremely quick. They bring you free chips and two salsas, one mild and one hot. Both were delicious. The hot was the perfect amount of heat for my taste. I ordered the pork and avocado burrito smothered with medium chili. It came with rice and beans. It was delivered to my table very quickly. It was absolutely delicious! The pork was tender and flavorful and addition of avocado made the burrito that much more tasty. I will definitely be going back to Diego's. The next time I want to go for dinner so I can try their margaritas. I recommend Diego's, especially for lunch.

When they first opened, I was not impressed. They must have changed the recipies because now it is very good. Good atmosphere, decent waitstaff, and never too crowded. The 2 for 1 frozen margaritas have excellent flavor and they pack a punch. The hot green chili is very good, never too hot but enough flavor to satisfy. The chili also has a fair amount of pork chunks in it. I usually get the pork and avocado burrito. Their carnitas is consistently very tasty. I think this is one of the best downtown Mexican restaurants, and I have tried most.

Meh. At best. My first visit was happy hour. I was impressed by the service so I thought I would try lunch soon. Margs are not my bevy of choice but they were yummy, esp when It's 2 for 1. The apps were decent. Lunch, on the other hand, was a different story. Again, great service although I noticed prices were a steeper than other mexican places downtown. The smell of marinated steak was wafting through the air but it was too late. I had already ordered something with chicken and ground beef. The tortilla soup was bland and was more watery than the thicker consistency I'm used to when it comes to tortilla soup. [BTW, $6.79 for soup?!? wtf] I tried both the red and green chile. Nothing to write home about. I did love the fact that they used chicken breast for my burrito. The cheese cheese enchilada tasted way, for lack of a better word. I think next time, I will steer clear of the smothered route and opt for tacos or carne asada.

This is the place you go when you can't agree on anything else but want to meet someone for lunch in the middle of the 16th Street Mall. It's ok. The food is alright. Nothing special, just Americanized Mexican food. They brag about their green chili, and it's ok. Really ok. And it's not too expensive. I tend to get a couple of things a la carte, because rice and beans are not my favorite. The service tends to be lackluster, but not horrible. All in all, this place is ok.

Such a could be super cool location. We stopped in for a drink and some appetizers. Chips and salsa were pretty good, nice kick on the hot salsa. The nacho... blech. Boring, poorly decorated and just not worth it. Margaritas were pretty tasty. All in all, there are butter location on 16th st to get your mexican at.

DO NOT go to this place if your standards are high on Mexican food. This is a cheap and failed attempt of such an amazing cuisine. Some coworkers and I just came back from the place and everything that could have gone wrong did. 1) When taken to be seated they had a total of 4 tables full of dirty plates and the table we were assigned to initially was full of spilled salsa. 2) We ordered the food and the beans were insipid, tasteless, horrible; what kind of Mexican restaurant messes up BEANS?? Taco Bell looks delicious compared to this place. 3) Just until the end, one of my coworkers noticed she had been drinking out of a dirty cup, it had lipstick all over the rim. Luckily she was using a straw. 4) The manager just gave her a 50% discount on her bill instead of on the house. Will never set foot on this establishment. 16 st mall or not, this restaurant doesn't belong in such a touristic place.

I had Diego's for lunch (take-out) and I was pleasantly surprised. The reviews on Yelp aren't too great. I ordered a mini-combo. The mini combo wasn't too mini. You can choose whichever items you want. I ordered the pork-avocado burrito and chicken enchilada with mild green chile (no beans). The pork-avocado burrito was very good. The pork had great flavor and the avocado was a nice touch. My only complaint is that the tortilla tasted store bought. The chicken enchilada was a step down from the burrito. Bland boiled chicken. At least put some salt in that water, please. The rice was tasty as was the green chile. It came with chips and salsa but I could have done without. The chips were oily and the salsas (there were two) were both not that great. I definitely would not get excited about the salsa. Overall just ok. There are really good dishes and some that really...aren't. Choose wisely.

Passable Mexican fare. Being a huge fan of Green Chilli I was somewhat satisfied with this place. I had the steak chimichanga and 2 margaritas on the rocks. It was pretty good and smothered in green chilli goodness and the margaritas were strong. Service was good. Prices very reasonable.

Diego's is okay. It is not a place I would rush to come back, but overall, it is not a bad place. The Mexican food is standard Mexican - enchiladas, chesadilla's, tacos, etc. I tried the three item platter with a chicken enchilada, chicken taco, and chicken flauta topped with green sauce. Each item was good, but nothing spectacular. My girlfriend ordered Soft Chicken Taco platter and this was also good, but nothing worth an immediate return chip. For being on the 16 Street Mall, the prices are not too bad. The service was also pretty solid as well. In fact, the quality of service was better then the quality of food.

2-for-1 margs for Cinco de Mayo, so $5 for 2. The are of the frozen blended variety, not my favorite option but they had lime wedges with a nice chunky salt rim and packed a punch. Maybe next year I'll return for another one or two (or four, whoops). Foul smell in the hallway behind the restaurant where the bathrooms are, but the waitresses were very friendly.

If not for a moderarly decent happy hour, I wouldn't go here. It's a good place for a group and the happy hour margaritas and beer are pretty good. Other than that...meh.

Hooray! Bland Breakfast Burritos! I've passed Diego's many times in the morning and have seen a good business they created adjacent to the restaurant right off the patio. I asked the friendly guy for a recommendation since I was a newbie he said he liked "with sausage". He dropped a little homemade hot sauce in my bag, I paid my $2 and was off. When I settled in, it tasted very bland. Maybe if the sausage was chorizo and not breakfast, but i've had Jimmy Dean that had more kick. The hot sauce saved it. I added it bite by bite. My work team saved me though! Wonderful Sue brought Santiago's for the whole crew. Yes!

I had walked by Diego's many times and was finally lured in by the $6.99 lunch special sign out front. We were quickly seated and brought chips and salsa. We asked a young man about the special and he said it was two tacos, beans, rice and a beverage all for only $6.99. When our waitress arrived it was a different story. She said the guy who told us was a bus boy. And the manager meant to change that sign out front a while ago and the special does not include a drink. So what I heard was they were not going to honor the printed deal out front. That's was fine with me. We ordered the tacos, one chicken and one beef. When our food arrived the tacos were bigger than average. The crispy tacos were garnished with lettuce and tomato. One was significantly better than the other, but I cannot recall if it was the chicken or beef. The beans and rice were flavorless and bland. Overall the food was fair, and the waitstaff friendly. The portions were favorable, but the biggest turn-off was our waitress dissing the "busboy" and not honoring the large printed advertisement out front and then charging for beverages. That was four weeks ago, and the sign still sits on the sidewalk of the 16th street mall. My friends went back yesterday and their waitress didn't even know there was a lunch special out front. This establishment could capitalize on the location if they could communicate internally and honor printed advertisements. It appears as though the art of customer service has been lost.

The bartender, Chris, was fantastic. He was attentive, very cheerful and made my time at the bar very enjoyable. I got the pork tacos and found them fairly good. I've had better back home, but they currently rank in my Top 5. The beer selection was adequate and the atmosphere was very laid back. I'd recommend.

We came for dinner with two hungry kids. Super friendly staff and great service. We really liked the salsa bar. Drinks were refreshing. We were in town for a convention and this place was recommended to us - great recommendation. You have to go down a few steps to get to this Diego's which was complicated by a recent snowstorm, but it was worth it. Food was fresh and not overly-cheesy as some restaurants sometimes are. I am a fan.

Most generic Mexican food made with the cheapest ingredients possible. Portion sizes are huge, but that doesn't really make up for the subpar food (just because there is more of it doesn't make it taste any better). And prices are kind of steep for the quality of the food. We stopped in here because it was crazy busy downtown, we had a show to get to, and this place wasn't crowded so we knew we could get in and out quickly. Lesson learned: don't pick a place to eat based on the lack of people there. The service was OK. Not rude, but not stellar. Definitely won't be returning. Sorry, guys!

I have often walked down 16th street mall and have seen the signs for Diego's. "Best Green Chile in Denver!" Hmm... okay. I was looking for something new, so I thought I would drop down and see what the fuss was about. I walk in and notice the decor- not overdone but not memorable. I sat down in the bar, the waiter was knowledgeable about the happy hour specials, all of which seemed good but I opted for the posole. While I was waiting he brought out the chips and salsa, but failed to let me know about the free salsa bar. My opinion- you can tell the quality of a Mexican restaurant by it's salsa. I grew up in Texas, spent my childhood summers and also lived in Northern New Mexico for a couple of years. I think I have an idea of what salsa should taste like and this one- 5 on a scale of 10. Good heat, slightly chunky but missing some extra flavor... Posole- good flavor, good heat and combined with the flour tortillas (you can also choose corn), it really was a good meal.

This is the best Mexican place downtown. Very tasty and a good spicy, not just hot. They have margaritas on tap which are very good and beat the Rio hands down in potency and flavor. The staff is great especially the bartender, he knew his tequila well. I will go back again and again.

  • Carolynn K.

Awful. Not even on par with the big chain restaurants like El Torito (which aren't great either). Red sauce had a weird tangy taste, both the beef in the tamale and the fish in the soft taco were mushy and tasteless. To top it off, the service was ridiculously slow even though they were less than half full.

I've lived in Santa Fe, NM so I like to think I know what good Mexican food should be...this is not it at all. A party of 4 of us went to dinner at Diego's on a Sunday night in April and I must say, I've had better experiences in Mexican restaurants in Alaska than here. 1) We ordered a round of margaritas...which came WITHOUT ANY LIME JUICE in them, so we had to ask for shooters of lime juice to mix our own (awful bartending). 2) The food was bland. The beans tasted like they were from a can (no flavor) and everything felt like it could have used more seasoning. The salsa wasn't spicy at all and tasted like it wasn't fresh. The chicken was stringy and tough in my burrito. 3) We wanted to forget the awful food so we ordered a 2nd round of margaritas...well this time the bartender put about 3 times too much lime juice in them so all we could taste was the lime juice, they were undrinkable. We had to send them back and have them taken off our bill. It is shameful to call yourself a Mexican restaurant when you screw up making 2 rounds of margaritas in a row. There are far better Mexican choices around Denver (check out Tequila's).

This place is a little weird since it's underground. The service I thought was pretty good, we had this really sarcastic waitress, which, weirdly enough, worked for me. I had the flautas with chicken, and it tasted pretty good. I liked their salsa bar as well. Everyone seemed to like their food in our party. Ambiance was pretty good as well.

In town for business and this place was recommended. There was only 3 customers in the entire place on a Wed nite at 7pm. That was the 1st clue. Mags were typical frozen machine. Ordered the chile verde and it all sauce with 3~4 small pieces of pork. In could not believe that this mess of a meal even came out of the kitchen! Simply the worst food I have ever had. By time I was done, I Was the only customer at 8pm. Female server was good and tried to make the meal right. This place looks like it is going down quick and don't waste ur time.

Had lunch here recently and since I usually dont have enormous expectations when it comes to Mexican food, I have to say that I came away from Diego's liking this place. It's a place I feel I can come too when I have a taste for Mexican and not first have to drive all over town for. It's well priced and the drinks are on point. I wasnt very hungry on this day so I ordered the quesadilla supreme appetizer. And the quesadilla was much bigger than I have had at most other restaurants and in my opinion worth the $8.99 price. Add on a couple of drinks, one from the bar and another not from the bar and I left with a $20 check, not including tip. Diego's satisfied my lunch cravings and though I do have to agree with other Yelpers about the service and it could be better, it wont stop me from coming back to Diego's.

Best house margaritas on the 16th street mall. If you are a salsa nut this place is for you too, with 11 homemade salsas. Es bueno! Not to mention the service is excellent.

The food was standard, cheesy, tex-mex, but the service was a big let-down. Our food took an extremely long time to show up, considering the place was only half-full and the sheer number of staff members around at all times. Water never got refilled, and chips had to be asked for, meanwhile there were always at least 4 waitpersons seemingly doing laps and not carrying anything. We actually watched one blowing bubbles - not chewing bubble gum - blowing bubbles from a bottle. When the food did show up, 3 orders were wrong and one was forgotten. To their credit, our server did bring us a comped round of beers. When he volunteered to split up the check without being asked, we had to remind him what we ordered. Isn't that why you write down the orders? I wont go as low as a 1-star, because the food was tolerable, but we really felt bad for whoever own the place, because it seems their money spent on management is being wasted.

Hmmph, a colleague treated me to lunch here and while I won't say it was great, I won't say it sucked either. Just your standard run of the mill Americanized Mexican joint wanna be. The prices were decent and the food was palatable. Worth coming back? The decor was OK and it was downstairs next to a Dairy Queen so I guess you could wash down your lunch with an ice cream cone. Yes, if I were in the area I might try this place again. The service was OK and while not the swiftest, not the worst I've experienced along 16th Street.

This was only ok. The service was ok. I went for a later lunch around 2:30. I live in CA an we have pretty good Mexican out there. Here it seemed like they bought their ingredients from Walmart and microwaved my burrito. Not impressed. Very bland flavor, but I may have high standards. I would not recommend this place for food. The atmosphere was nice and lively though.

We stepped in here to avoid the rain after the Rockies game and surprise a Mexican restaurant. Actually, it was the guy on the corner talking about happy hour and we said, we gotta check that place out on the way back. So we did. If you want a quick bite and a cocktail its a decent place. I just wish the rest of the food had the same flavor like the salsa did. The service was decent, friendly staff.

Seems like it was more of a weekend spot and their being open on weeknights is just an after thought. Food was average, though portion size was big. Service was ridiculously slow. There were people at only 3 other tables yet it took 15 minutes before my order was taken and 30 minutes from the time I finished eating until someone brought a check. In fact I would have ordered desert, but my check just showed up without anyone even asking if I wanted desert.

We only went here because it turns out the hole in the wall Mexican food place we anted to go closed at 7pm on Sundays...weird! It is Mexican food, but nothing special. Expect to ask twice for your drinks and not to be offered a refill on chips. Skip it.

Im generally a food lover so, I mean rock on food. Most food I throw down my gullet is tasty. Low expectations yield mostly exceeding standards. At any rate- I review mostly on service. I normally wouldn't go into to Diego's because the street team is so annoying. Like come on- I get enough people yelling at me, trying to give me things, and trying to convince me of something from all the bums in Lodo I don't need another person screaming at me about margaritas or burritos. Fortunately I came tonight 9/02/13 when there wasn't a ninja standing outside trying to ninja star me with promising flyers. I sat at the bar and ordered food, because I was alone and felt stupid sitting at a table. I'm not sure who was bar-tending as I didn't catch a name but god was she AMAZING! Not only was she wicked cool, she gave me extra watermelon slices in my margarita after she probably watched me devour the first slice. She asks if I want salt or sugar- I tell her surprise me and BAM she does half and half. I worry sometimes about being the annoying customer at the the bar and so I try to be easy, tonight I tried to be the easy bar goer but she insisted I do what I wanted even if that means getting red & dare I say it green chili with no tomato (which is as complicated as it gets in my realm folks). Needless to say I tipped $20 dollars to her, and will come back SOULY based on how great she was. I come for the food, I stay for the atmosphere, and I return for the service. Thank you kind she devil bar keep!

I've been to Diego's twice for lunch and both times, they got my order incorrect. Being a native of California, we have some pretty authentic Mexican out West so I'm more critical than most, I'm guessing? Diego's is average Mexican food. But truth be told, I'd go again, until I find something better in the vicinity.

I ate here a few times. Good Beans and Guacamole. I had a hard taco, it was acceptable. However, I don't think the atmosphere and location is right for a Mexican Restaurant. I think if it was in a different location, it would be better. Under the sixteen street mall near the DQ just doesn't fit this place, it is trying to be a happy hour joint. I just rather walk over the the liquor store next door and Taco bell down the street for prices like this. I could get cheaper and better Mexican from VIVA la Burrito, and I have... yesterday..

Great waiter, but worst manager on a Sunday night I have ever had! He was extremely unreasonable and rude to us. We are visiting Denver, CO for a conference, and I usually do not go out of my way to write a review for a restaurant. However, I was so dissatisfied with his attitude. Never in my life have I felt so insulted. The food was mediocre, but I would not pleased with the manager and services provided at this restaurant. Please do not go to his restaurant.

My friends and I went here for lunch and we all really liked it. I had the pork & avocado burrito smothered in green chile....yum!!! The pork is deeeelicious. The chips and spicy salsa were tasty and I liked that they have a free salsa bar so that you can sample 4 or 5 of their salsas at will. Our waiter was very prompt and friendly. We were all impressed.

Terrible - don't go here!!! The food is traditional "slop", 2 people in our party ended up with food poisoning, and the owner is unfriendly and totally rude to both customers and his staff. Especially his staff, we saw him yelling at a waitress and generally acting like a jerk. There are many great restaurants with very good food and ambiance in this city. Take your money and your appetite elsewhere!

Came in here for some drinks...did not order any food...order patron and I received water-down patron...tasted like water and cost $$$...I know what patron (tequila) tastes like and I am willing to pay top dollar for it....in fact, any good premium liquor. My friend asked the bartender about the drinks and he responded, "We would never add water to our drinks." We promptly got up and left...never to return... Come in here if you never had real drinks or you don't know what real alcohol tastes like. Respectfully,

Decent Mexican food. I may be a bit biased because I prefer great Tex-Mex. Service and atmosphere was great. Cold beer. Downtime with coworkers.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
