New Ownership : Same/Better Wow flavors. Decor improved = I care not. It's soul food, not the Ritz Carlton tea room. Fried Chicken was dead on delicious. Potato salad and greens double yum. Destination spot for proper grub.

After driving by this place several times, I let curiosity get the best of me and my boyfriend and I stopped in to grab some dinner. My boyfriend (who loves soul food) was all for trying Coleman's with me. We went inside and were instantly greeted by a woman who was super nice and helpful with the menu. She let us know the popular menu items, as well as the special of the day. She gave us some breathing room while deciding what to order, and gave us water as well while we browsed. After a few minutes, we decided to order the fried chicken dinner, the greens, and the baked beans. The fried chicken dinner was plenty enough for two people and it was delicious! The baked beans were to DIE FOR. I would go back just for an order of them! Being spontaneous as we are, we decided to take home an order of pigs feet as well (neither of us have had them before). We didn't particularly like pigs feet, not that they were bad, but we just prefer tougher meat! The prices were good, and the service was speedy and super friendly. They have quite a bit on their menu to choose from, so its easy to customize your order exactly how you want it. I would definitely recommend coming here if you're in need of some good old fashioned soul food.

Slap yo mama this is some good soul food! They should probably lose a star for not being open earlier, but dang that was some good chicken and sweet tea.

A horrid place not worth visiting. I use to stop by in there before attending musical events across the Street at Cervantes, as it was convenient to the venue and they allowed you to park there. Seems they changed their tune, and after serving the last patron, they call out the tow trucks to clear the lot of their patrons, at almost $300 a tow. NOT a friendly kinda place. Warning !! it's the kind of neighborhood where one may want to consider carrying a concealed weapon. If you're not from Denver, don't even think of going to that part of town. People have been accosted and mugged at the light rail station a half block away.

I am 41 years old. I have never been in a restaurant where Kool-Aid was beverage choice. The service was very good - the woman that helped us was very nice and attentive. The food was fair at best - the greens were not very good, my ribs were nothing special - as an African American - I try to support the black business - this was $40 bucks that I wish I could have back --

I had very high hopes for this place, but they were not quite justified. I was hoping that it would be on par with Tom's Home Cooking, but it misses the mark considerably. The staff is very friendly, if a bit slow. I had the fried chicken with rice and baked beans. The chicken was tasty, but a bit dry, and surprisingly un-crispy. It is straight fried, not dipped in batter. The sides were both very good, though the rice was just plain white with brown gravy on it. I figured it would be more of a spicy dirty rice. My girlfriend got the meatloaf. She enjoyed it, but was disappointed with the collard greens, and the mac n cheese was a bit runny. Both meals cost about $11 each The interior of this restaurant really is a dive, and not it a good way. But a good thing is that they have pretty great hours; open until 2 am on weekends, and midnight most other nights. I'd go back if I had a craving for soul food and Tom's wasn't open.

I stopped by here after having passed it many times on the light rail. They are very nice people who work there. But the place has more potential than anything else. I really enjoyed the food, although the bread isn't too great. The best part about this place is that they do run out of food time-to-time. This means that anything they have is fresh, which is better than always having food and having some of it be old. I got the brisket sandwich, the meat and sauce was very good. However, it came with simple bread. I understand that is how soul food is served, but just because something has always been done a certain way does not mean it is the best way. I appreciate that they take credit card and really care about their customers. It is a relaxed environment and that is all great. But it can be better. In the end, I give in an A-OK, this is not a bad rating. Good food, but not great and lot's of potential. I totally recommend trying this place, but do not have too high expectations.

Was ok, black eyed peas were good, fried okra had tips and stem ends in it. The fried chicken dinner was 4 wings, I dunno, maybe they ran out of legs or breasts.

Some of the reviews about Coleman's are sadly off the mark. I'm from Tallahassee, FL (AKA: the redneck riviera and south Georgia), therefore I know what I'm talking about. So sit back and I will guide you through a proper dining experience at Coleman's, so you won't mess it up. 1. Don't get the ribs or any other BBQ from here! You don't go to a soul food restaurant and get ribs, you go to a BBQ place for ribs. You are selling yourself short ordering the ribs in a place like this. Do yourself a favor and try some oxtails, neckbones, chittlins' or if your extremely picky go with the chicken. You can not judge this place as a BBQ joint, if you do you are stupid. 2. Imagine you are at your grandmas house. This will put you in the right mindstate while eating here. I can recall many a Sunday dinner at Grandma's house. The rug wasn't always vacuumed, the table wasn't always spotless and the meal didn't always come right when I wanted it, but the food was always good. There is good food here, but this is not the place for your anniversary dinner. 3. Be nice. If you don't like something, ask to try something different. The folks here are the kind that will probably bring you something else out rather than lose you as a customer. When I went one time, Mr. Coleman brought out some of his ribs for me to try when he noticed I didn't really care for the rice and gravy. A very nice gesture on his part. Face it, you probably have no idea whats good anyway. You probably watched "Soul Food" and thought you had it figured out. You are wrong. 4. Don't get it twisted. This is not a New Orleans themed restaurant, the food isn't spicy and overflowing with tangy ingredients. This isn't a Jamaican spot with exotic ingredients. This is true blue American Soul Food, or like my daddy says, "poor people food." Stuff anyone can afford to purchase, throw some Lowry's on, and fry up. For me this place reminds me of home simple and plain. I can get some greens a couple pieces of catfish and maybe they'll have some sweet potato pie. Follow the rules and you'll be fine. You'll leave Coleman's full and happy. If you don't like these rules don't waste your time eating here, you'll be disappointed.

I wish I lived in Denver just so I could come here at least once a month, I would come more but you know Soul Food can be a bit much on your figure lol. I have come here every time I go to Denver I head to 5 points for a haircut and Coleman's for some soul food. I usually get Chitterlings as that is hard to find in most of my travels and even harder is to find some place that know how to clean and good them proper, Colemans make them just like I would get if I visited family in my Birth city of Baltimore. A very no frills homey place.

We stopped in on a whim before a show at Cervantes and our experience made my weekend really. Personally I wouldn't go to a nondescript soul food joint in Five Points expecting them to have a liquor license or expensive decor, and I surely wouldn't detract stars because of those things. Here's what Coleman's DOES have: 1. Huge portions of juicy, flavorful, stick-to-your ribs deliciousness at a cheap price. We split a $12 dinner (4 ribs smothered in bbq sauce, mac n cheese and yams) and it was more than enough food for two very hungry adults. The yams in particular are dangerously good and I had to resist the urge to lick my plate. 2. Charm. Owner and cook Henry Coleman loves food and loves people and his joy is contagious. Go during a slow time (they're open till 10 and at 8:30 or so on a Saturday we were the only customers) so that Henry has time to come out from the kitchen and chat you up. His BBQ ribs left me smiling, but Henry himself had me cracking up laughing. His niece was more reserved- she served our food and then went back to watching BET videos at the counter. There are drawings and paintings of President Obama on the walls. If you aren't charmed by these sort of details perhaps you have no heart. 3. Location. One easy way to keep Five Points vibrant and un-generic while also pumping in money to keep it from deteriorating is to support the businesses that already exist there. I'm not sure why Ethel's House of Soul (the restaurant formerly in this location) closed, but I'll be pretty sad if the same thing happens to Coleman's and therefore I plan to return often and send friends there whenever possible.

Had the chicken and waffles yesterday. The chicken was good but the waffles were grainy (fell apart like cornbread) which was odd. Will have to give them a try.

I stopped by here recently after reading a write-up in the Westword. You see, once every couple of months I get a serious craving for collard greens and I can't stop thinking about them until I eat some. I usually cure my cravings when I am traveling in the South, but I can't control when the cravings hit. There are very few true soul food houses in Denver, but I've found a couple of places that fit the bill. Of course, I'm always looking for those hidden gems that are off the beaten path and under the radar, which is what brought me to Coleman's. That and the fact that the proprietor is from Detroit and I'm a Michigan girl myself. I ordered a side of greens and a side of cabbage to go. Both of which really hit the spot. The greens were a little bit overcooked and over salted for my tastes, but that is really a matter of preference. They were still yummy and I'd order them again. The boiled cabbage was excellent, with hints of ham throughout and a light, subtly sweet, flavor that was unexpected but welcomed. A nice chunk of homemade cornbread accompanied the sides and was a great foil for soaking up the pot lik'r. I can't speak to the quality of the main dishes or the table service, so I'll have to update my review when I've had the opportunity to dine in and order a full meal. Until then, I'd recommend checking this place out.

After living in Denver for more than 10 years, my wife and I have been on a mission to broaden our restaurant picks and find great places around town that we've been missing. Coleman's Soul Food is one of those places. The food hits the mark on so many levels --- it's awesome! We both had the fried chicken wings. I had rice and gravy and baked beans, while my wife had greens and potato salad. Everyone of the sides was spot on. The chicken was made to order, super crispy, and seasoned perfectly. Additionally, it doesn't get better than Mrs. Coleman. She is one of the sweetest people you'll meet in Denver. I don't understand the other reviews. They seem to love the food, but only give the place 2 stars. They do take credit cards. And while the decor isn't the best, if you want a place with local chachkis on the wall and waiters with flare --- go to TGI Friday's. If you want legit food with humble service put Coleman's on your list.

Went to this place for takeout after work for some chicken and catfish. I s severely disappointed when I got home to open the containers to find 4 chicken wings, scoop of rice with gravy, Mac and cheese. I was expecting to find juicy pieces of maybe a thigh or a drumstick but not 4 chicken wings. Also the Mac and cheese barely contained any cheese. The cornbread was frustrating to eat. It comes in a muffin/cupcake wrapper and it just crumbled. The edges of the bread was also burned. The catfish dinner comes with two fillets and looked great however after tasting them it has little to no flavor (definitely frozen). Ordered sweet potato and collard greens as a side for my wife and she refused to set the sweet potato because it did not taste right. Collard greens was average at best. This place ranks as one of my bottom restaurants along with Jabos BBQ I will never go to either place again. Very disappointed.

Stopped in during the Dancin in the Streets music festival...the decor of the place is non existant...blank walls, random things that have fallen scattered around the floor etc. With no air conditioning, no booze and no credit cards it might not be the place for everyone...but i'm an intrepid type so I soldier on.. the menu is 9 entrees in either sandwich or dinner form. My pal orders the brisket...and we find that they are sold out at 5 pm on Saturday. Really?? You have a nine item menu and you are out before dinner?? Granted there was a music festival going on your street, but just a little forsight wold be nice. Regardless we soldier on... My pal has the ribs and I go for the pulled pork. The pulled pork was tender, juicy and just a tad on the sweet side but still it was a winner. A bit too small a portion for my tastes...I don't mid paying more for a bigger portion...but for what you are paying for it was good. My pal's ribs were juicy and tender as well. Service was friendly but the waitress we had was a little overwhelmed and had to be asked for thing like butter, water etc several times. I wanted to like the place but it just fell short.
