I'm new to Denver and was looking for a bakery to do a nice little birthday cake in a "Frozen" theme for my daughter. Child's Pastry Shop did not disappoint. The cake was lovely and my daughter was amazed by it. While we provided the characters, Child's did a fantastic job with the rest of the decorating. The cake itself didn't seem as moist or soft as I would have liked, but the icing was incredibly good - that was really the best part. We were very pleased overall and I will likely return for future birthdays!

I went here today to get some cupcakes and some pastries. I ended up with only a few cupcakes since the selection was limited. The cupcakes available today were all yellow cake except one. They had a few kinds of cookies and a few pastries but nothing really thrilled me. When I tried he cupcake, the frosting was WAY to sugary and the cupcake was a little stale. The people were nice and the cakes on display look cool but I'm not impressed over all.

Unfortunately, I've had two very negative experiences with child's pastry shop. Last year, I ordered cupcakes for my daughter's birthday party at school, and somehow the order got mixed up and lost in the shuffle. The cupcakes were not ready the morning and went to pick them up, but at least they nicely rushed the order and then had somebody drop off the cupcakes at her school. This year the situation was worse. I ordered a customized cake for my daughter's birthday party with a two week lead time. I called multiple times in the week leading up to the party to make sure that the order was clear given by prior negative experience with the shop. I was reassured multiple times everything was in order. I emailed a photo to be printed onto the cake, and again received confirmation all was in order. I arrived the night before the party to pick up the cake, and it was not done. My daughter has a peanut allergy and this was specified on the order form when I first placed the order. I was told it was not an issue. When I went to pick up the cake, the manager informed me they could not guarantee safety from a peanut free perspective, and therefore the order was cancelled. They blamed this on a new staff member who was not clear on the policy. Nobody called me to inform me of this. I was reassured the multiple times I call to double check on the status of the cake order, without again being informed that in fact they could not make the cake for us. Thankfully our local grocer was able to rush cake in time for the party. I will never news child's pastry shop again. The manager called and was very apologetic about this. She said she would send me a gift certificate to the pastry shop as a gesture, but in fact I never received this either.

I have ordered custom cakes from this bakery a couple different times now. Both experiences were excellent. You can email them pictures of custom cakes of cupcakes that fit what ever theme you are looking for and they will work with you to get a custom cake made that will look unique and awesome for your party or event. I recently ordered a custom cake for my friend's bridal shower and I got so many compliments on how it looked as well as how it tasted. It was delicious. The only reason I put 4 stars instead of 5, is because the custom cakes can be really pricey. But Stacey at the the bakery, worked with me to get something that fit the theme of the party I was throwing and still affordable. I highly recommend this place.

If I could give it zero stars I would. OMG...the worst cake ever! Super expensive and sooooooo dry and freezer burnt! You can tell it's been premade and put in the freezer. NEVER AGAIN! !

This place has gone downhill. Cakes are stale, customer service is horrible now. Even chatted with the owner and she has an attitude. They can't even get their hours correct online. Open till 5pm or 6pm? Often run in to get whatever they may have to take to my dad for his sweet tooth. They ALWAYS close the door before the closing time and then ignore you when you try and tell them it is 3 mins before closing! they are too busy cleaning up and getting their sidewalk sign inside to assist customers that rushed there and actually made it before closing time. King soopers and Cakes by Karen have my business now.

Ick! I ordered a layered yellow cake with chocolate frosting for my 8 year old's b-day party. I can honestly say it is the worst yellow cake with chocolate frosting I have ever had. I dished out small pieces and not one of the 6 kids finished it and all but one of them went so far as to say they didn't really like it. What crazy world are we living in I thought, so I proceeded to taste it myself. Disappointment on the spot. First because I wasted money on this splurge despite a super tight budget just as a little surprise for her b-day, and second because I was looking forward to some yummy leftovers to mourn my splurge. It was so not great that I literally (and really sadly) just threw over half the cake away. This from a girl who has eaten dessert every night for 20 years. The cake itself was dry and super unflavorful, and the chocolate frosting literally did not have even a hint of chocolate flavor to it. Huge bummer as she was really excited for her first ever "pretty cake from a shop". I only give two stars because the customer service was exceptional and the cake was very pretty to look at.

I grew up with Child's cakes, but it's not the same as it used to be 25+ years ago. I recently ordered a cake for my son's birthday and, not only was it late to arrive at the shop, but it was SO dry and FLAVORLESS that I actually returned it the next day. The manager tasted it and agreed that it was terrible and hardly worth the $85.00 that I had spent. I requested a refund which was granted in gift certificates several weeks later after three reminder phone calls. Very disappointing.

I don't eat cake often. I drive by child's bakery sign frequently. Decided to go in and get a piece of chocolate cake. One word describes the piece of chocolate cake " stale" . Very disappointed.

My family and I used to LOVE this place, but they have steadily gone downhill. This week, after leaving NUMEROUS messages, and not getting calls back - I FINALLY was able to put in my order for a special birthday cake - only to find out (after spending $75) that it was NOT at all the cake we ordered. NOT to mention, it tasted like cardboard, and the buttercream frosting make the frosting from king soopers cakes - look gourmet. I say BAG this place - unless bad service and tasteless cakes are your thing.

Child's Pastry Shop nailed the custom cake I requested for my best friend's 30th birthday. The cake was the highlight of her birthday. It instantly became her FaceBook profile picture. She not only indulged in the cake at her dinner but ate it for breakfast the following two days because it was super yummy... moist, full of flavor and not too sweet. Thank you Child's Pastry Shop!

Why is my first review of Child's Pasty a shop listed in the "not recommended reviews" area at the bottom of the page along with 35 other one star reviews? I am updating that review with this one because that experience was not good and people deserve to know about it. If you don't want people writing about how rude your employees are get different employees, don't edit almost 40 reviews!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have used Child's Pastry for a few different occasions over the years and have always found their service and cakes fantastic. Although recently when went back to order my wedding cake things have really changed. First, during our tasting I was told that the person who normally handles the wedding cake orders was out and so Stacie helped us. I was also told that the samples were prepared the day before. The samples were not quite what I was used to, but considering they had been pre-cut in the frig overnight we went with what we liked best. I was indecisive on a few of the decor decisions, but Stacie assured me that it was fine to think about and give them a call back with the final decision. I called back after getting back to California and was told once again that the person in charge of wedding cakes was out, they took a message (on a Monday). On Thursday, I received a call wondering if I still wanted to order the cake. I informed that yes I do and had already called and left a message on Monday. They apologized and then we ironed out the details. Well, then I was asked for credit card information after being told that they were going to email a contract over to me. I let them know I would call back with the credit card info, once I received the contract. I never received the contract, but the next day I received a voicemail about payment. I called back the very next morning was put on hold, told they were really busy and that they would call me back. I never received a call back, but at that point with all the disorganization and still no contract (I don't give money w/o a contract) I moved on to another bakery. Azucar Bakery is now making my cake, I received a contract within an hour after my mother doing the tasting for me and I feel much more comfortable. I hope Child's Pastry gets their act together, because it would be sad to see them close after all these years.

When I initially went into the shop to order my wedding cake, I was super excited. I had been cooresponding with a woman for a few months (It was a destination wedding). So when I finally got to try the flavors I was stoked that the flavor of cake and filling were available (marble cake with hazelnut filling). I also ordered a cake for my groom which we had at the rehearsal dinner. Now this is where it get bad. While driving to Denver, I emailed the shop twice and never heard from them (I had to pay for my grooms cake!!). I finally got a call on Tuesday. We went down that afternoon because we had been told that the slip would be left so I could pay; well, when we got there it took them 15 minutes to find the slip. I was told multiple times that the grooms cake would be available AT noon on Friday for pickup. My fiance and I got there at 2:40-ish on Friday and the cake still wasn't there; my first thoughts were: 1. where is my cake and 2. what would have happened if we had come at noon??? Needless to say I was quite mad. Now, to make this situation even worse, they got to the wedding late with the cake. Granted, the ceremony wasn't starting for 30 minutes, but I hated that my guests had to see them bringing the cake in (they actually pulled up right behind me in front of the venue and brought out the cake). When someone tells me that they are going to deliver something between a certain set of times, I expect it to be delivered on time. My aunt was disappointed in them because she referred them to me and said that they were highly recommended. She used to use them all the time, but has since found another shop to go to.

My review of Child's Pastry Shop can best be described from my most recent experiences... Trip #1 - Went into store, ordered a birthday cake and bought some chocolate eclairs. The eclairs were dried out and had almost no filling. I hoped the birthday cake wouldn't be dry. Trip #2 - Went into store, bought a couple of cupcakes. The cupcakes were dried out. I gave up on hoping and started praying that the birthday cake wouldn't be dry. Trip #3 - Went into store, picked up the birthday cake in the morning for serving in the afternoon. Can you guess what happened? The birthday cake was DRY! I had HOPED it was just MY imagination, but just to be safe, I quickly passed out more vanilla ice cream and milk to TRY and cover it up. Sadly, it wasn't just me and I was unable to cover it up. Several people approached me and kind of mentioned the same thing. A dried out cake doesn't get three stars from me. It doesn't get two stars.

Unfortunately, I think this store's former reputation is no longer warranted. We helped to host a 90th birthday party for an old family friend, and everyone said "go to Child's! The cake is fantastic!" As this was a very special, once in a lifetime occasion, we really hoped the cake would be wonderful (and certainly not of any concern). My mother in law ordered the cake and asked that they do a garden design, as the guest of honor had a huge garden in her prime. They handily agreed. The day we were supposed to pick up the cake, they informed us they'd need 2 extra hours to finish it. OK, no big deal, the party isn't until 7pm. When we showed up at 3 to pick it up, they were disorganized (30 minutes to pick up a cake and an impulse buy cream puff? Seriously?) It appears their store is staffed with baking school interns, as they seemed very unsure of themselves and inept at working the register, as well as locating the cake. Also, they closed off one of the letters in the woman's name, forcing us to try to doctor it just a tad so it said her name. The cake was gorgeous- beautiful decorative frosting. Looked amazing. We cut into it, and it was supposed to be a yellow cake with lemon filling. In what world is a yellow cake nearly dark brown (being darker on the top??) Answer: When they burn your cake, even though they've had extra time to make it on the day you're supposed to pick it up... The filling was almost nonexistent. The frosting was pretty, but I can frost a block of foam and not want to eat it. Almost nobody ate their cake. This was truly disappointing, especially for my mother-in-law and grandmother-in-law (who hosted the party.) $70 for burnt cake. What a racket! My mother in law has also tried calling them to address the issue, and has not received a return phone call. It's one thing to burn a cake if you're a recreational baker; it's something entirely different to sell burnt cake as if that's appropriate when you're a professional baker. I'd do a half star if I could.

I recently ordered a cake here for a nieces birthday. She's really into Hulk, so I got a 3D Hulk cake make for her. The cake looked REALLY good! I was impressed. Such good detail. But the taste of the cake (which also plays a big role) was disgusting! So it was a win-lose situation. The cake was dry! Overpriced for the way it tasted. I won't ever be back.

If you want your money taken and your wedding ruined, then by all means purchase your cake from Child's. My fiancé and I went in to get a wedding cake for our wedding in Tucson AZ. We did our cake consult at Child's and came up with a design we liked. We told the bakers we were flying and we would pick the cake up before we left for our flight. When I picked up the cake, the piping and artwork looked as though Michael J Fox had been the guest decorator as there was not 1 straight line or evenly drawn shapes. Although they got the colors right, the cake was by no means a wedding cake. With an hour before our flight and no manager at the store I had to leave with our elementary school art project cakes - When I contacted the manager to explain our disappointment in the cake and the fact that we now didn't have an acceptable cake for our wedding, I was told it was MY FAULT, that I should have waited for a manager to arrive (again an hour before my flight) I was also told that I would only receive a gift certificate as they do not have a refund policy. So in the end I was told that it was my fault the cake was pathetic, it was my problem that I didn't wait for a manager and to solve my problem I would get a gift card, DID I MENTION I DONT HAVE A CAKE FOR MY WEDDING!!! All the while as I was explaining my frustration I was being told I was rude for yelling... For a small business these people do not understand customer service or compassion. SAVE YOURSELF THE PAIN AND DO NOT BUY FROM CHILDS PASTRY!

This week from May 5 to May 11 will be the Cupcakes For The Cure week. On Monday May 05 2008, I went to Child's Pastry Shop, the one located at cross streets of Yale and Monoco. Child's Pastry Shop, is one of the participanting bakeries here in Denver/Boulder areas which have agreed to donate 25 cents for each designated event cupcake sold during Cupcakes for the Cure. I love the place, the cupcakes and the cream puff that I purchased that day . The price of my purchase were very reasonable. They do wedding, birthday and other occasions cakes too. Child's new location on Colorado Blvd leaves a bit to be desired appearance-wise. The bakery is smaller than the Monaco and Yale location, and doesn't look as nice. BUT- I didn't go there to enjoy the view of the bakery. I went to get an amazing cake. And Childs always delivers when it comes to cakes. I have a huge sweet tooth and let's just say I've eaten a lot of cakes from a lot of places. And no one has been able to replace Childs as my favorite. Their cake is always moist, and their frosting can't be improved upon. It's perfect. And in the rare event that there is a problem with a custom cake order, they find a way to fix the issue immediately. I can't recommend a better bakery. Maybe a better location- but NOT a better bakery.

Blech. I have been here 3 times now (shame on me. I kept thinking if I tried something different, the next thing would be better. I was wrong -- they kept getting worse). Breakdown: 1. Had 2 cupcakes the first time. Vanilla with chocolate icing and chocolate w/buttercream. The vanilla w/chocolate icing was ok...nothing to write home about. The icing is pretty good. The chocolate cupcake was so dry, I literally could not eat it. It was like eating a paper bag. 2. 2nd time I went, I tried an oreo brownie. I now think this baker hates chocolate. The oreo topping was pretty good, but the brownie itself -- you could play hockey with it. Dry, tasteless. 3. Finally, I thought, Ok, I'll try a black and white cookie. No one can mess those up. I was wrong! This was, hands down, not only the worst black and white cookie I've ever had, but maybe the worst dessert ever. I guess they put almond extract in it (which I wholeheartedly disagree w/for this cookie), but more importantly, it tasted like they dumped the entire bottle in. It was just awful. (BTW, if you want the BEST black and white cookie in Denver, go to Zaidy's. They do it right.) I will not be returning. I have learned my lesson!

Horrible. If I could give no stars, I would. I'm very disappointed to write this review, because Child's used to be, by far, my favorite bakery. When it was located on Broadway and County Line, it was excellent, but since moving to Colorado Blvd., it's been terrible. My husband ordered my birthday cake (by far the most important part of my birthday). The design was fine - but probably no better than you would receive at a supermarket. They also didn't follow any of his specifications. He said he wanted Nightmare Before Christmas, but that it should be black and white predominantly and not juvenile. It was neither, altough it was still a decent design. The biggest problem came with actually eating it. The cake was actually CROOKED - like lower on one side than the other. Also, the frosting was bland and the cake was extremely dry. No one finished their piece, and we threw the rest away. This was a half a sheet cake at $75 - a complete waste of money, and we'll never be back again. I hope that others are warned off ordering important cakes from here, as the quality is poor. You'd be better off getting a cake at CostCo or a grocery store, and for less money.

I needed a 'Star Wars' cake for my sons birthday, and none of the other bakeries in town seemed to be able to make one, so I gave Childs a call. They made a chocolate 'Darth Vadar' helmet head cake, which looked amazing. I would give them five stars for their decorating skills, but the cake just didn't taste that great. It was dry, and the frosting was glue like. Honestly, the kids thought that the cake was the coolest thing ever, and no one complained. I should add that I have been to several kids parties over the last couple of years, where Childs cakes have been served. They are always gorgeous. They seem to do white cake better than chocolate, and the flat, sheet style cakes are more moist than the rounded shapes.

Great cakes! I purchased a stock cake with bavarian filing for my manager's birthday last year and it was a hit. I have to remember that Child's is so close to me for other cakes and baked goods. Truly amazing cake.

They made birthday cakes for me and my brothers 25 years ago! I remember the hamburger and frog cakes like it was yesterday. Lemon and raspberry are my favorite fillings if you're ordering a cake. If you need one on the fly - they stock some great cakes in the case on all days except Monday (i think). They have such pretty and delicious cookies too, perfect for a wedding or baby shower, and are an absolute hit with the guests and the guest of honor.

Child's is kind of the last of its kind - an old school family bakery. This is where your grandmother got your birthday cake when you were a kid. They've been around for (drum roll please) 59 years. That's a lot of cakes, breads and rolls out the door. They do all the old style stuff like German Chocolate and sometimes, if you feel like strolling down a pastry lined memory lane, this is your place. The folks are nice and helpful with special orders. The best part is that they don't have "gourmet" bake shop prices. No $4 cupcakes or $50 birthday cakes here. You are not going to have any culinary epiphanies but it's dependable and affordable.

The first time I purchased a cake from Child's I felt like I paid more than what I got. The bakery came highly recommended and the "gymnastics" cake that I ordered looked kind of cheap with the way it was airbrushed on. However, my daughter and her guests at her birthday party could quickly see past that aspect as the cake itself tasted wonderful. I just recently visited Child's last week for the first time in a couple years since the above incident. I ran in real quick as I couldn't find a cake for my husband's birthday at any other shops closer to home. I had to wait a while as there were a couple customers in front of me. I must have waited a good 15 minutes and the staff apologized. I purchased a pre-made cake out of the refrigerated case, they wrote "Happy Birthday" on it and then gave me a nice little discount for the long wait I had to experience. We all loved the cake - it was yummy. A 3-layer white chocolate cake with raspberry filling. It was amazing! And this time the cake was beautiful on the outside, as well as on the inside. Thank you Child's!

Childs wont knock your socks off and will have saying I could make better cupcakes at home etc. I could splurge and go through the whole buyers remorse thing after buying 5 kids cupcakes and drinks at one of the trendy cool shoppes in town! Or I could realize that hey Totions pizza still tastes good to kids so $1 cupcakes will sure to please! That's just what they did, there is nothing special and they don't have a triple nut imported banana bread whipped butter cream cheese cupcake but they do have chocolate with colorful sprinkles and that's sure to put a smile on most kids faces! LIFEHACKER TIP: Run in Safeway at this strip mall get some milks first, makes a quick snack with 5 cupcakes and 5 milks $10!

Listen up cupcakes fans. I know that some of us have been going around tasting $3.00 cupcakes from some specialty shops. Some are not that great, right. Well, I had some girlfriends over last night and my dear friend Christy was nice enough to bring over tequila and cupcakes. Strange mixture but I needed a drink after work :-)) So I didn't complain. The cupcakes came from Child's and were AWESOME! They will do any combination of flavors and they will even do a filling. The best part is they are $1.00. You cannot bet that and they taste great! Next time you have a cupcake craving give them a try. They make them fresh every morning but I will warn you they are mostly gone by 3pm. They also have lots of other stuff and the cakes are great as well. Enjoy.

My family has been going to Child's for 30 years or so, starting when it was back in U-Hills. Family-owned and loved, they focus on classics like birthday cakes (personal fav is lemon cake with raspberry filling), cookies and cupcakes. They are reliable and timeless, each time I go in the door I feel like a 1st grader holding my Dad's hand again, excitedly looking forward to a sweet treat. Recommended for both birthday and wedding cakes.

The best thing about Child's is their prices. Yea! Good prices. Now let me tell you what you won't like. The store is in an ugly Safeway strip mall. The store itself is very much in need of an update, or at the very least a deep cleaning. I went in today for cupcakes. There was very little seating, and what there was, was covered in decorating books. The lights were off, it was very dark. (Middle of the day.) They had NO drinks, not even water, none. How can this be possible? The clerk told me, "they have to go out and get some, they don't have someone to do it for them." Go, I'll wait! I told her I'd be eating one cupcake here and taking one to go but she wrapped them both up to go, I sat down anyway (at the table with all the books.) I ate my icky cake in the dark. Yup, I was disappointed! I could taste the lard, and the only thing that's worse than lard is trying to cover it up with a ton of sugar. The sugar flavored frosting was as big as the cake and hard, like cold lard. The cake was dry and after one bite I was thinking, What am I doing here! You can do so much better, just go into the safeway bakery if you need a sugary fix. They have no style, no class, and no flavor!

My baby shower cake was purchased from Child's Pastry shop this past weekend and I was sadly disappointed with the outcome. Did they fire their cake decorator right before they made my cake??!? I requested a cake with "large ladybugs and small flowers", but instead got a big blob of purple frosting flowers and extremely tiny ladybugs (they looked kind of like tiny black and red polka dots!). The cake was supposed to read "Its a girl", but 2 different guests at my party asked me what it said! It was bunched up cursive writing that was so thick that you had to really concentrate to read it. As a whole, the cake looked like it was intended for an old lady's retirement party....not for a baby shower! I cut that cake as quickly as possible to avoid further embarrassment. Its really sad to me because I ordered a "Dexter's Laboratory" cake for my son's 8th birthday (2 years ago) and it looked awesome. This place has definitely lost my business, unless I go blind AND need a cake for a retirement party.

My wedding was in Estes Park, Colorado on Sept. 19. There weren't many things we splurged on, but I was insistent that we have a wedding cake from Child's - I've loved their cakes for years. They didn't disappoint. The three-tiered cake had one layer of raspberry cake with sour cream filing, chocolate with raspberry filing, and white with bavarian. They were all very delicious; happily we got a quarter of the bottom layer (raspberry with sour cream) to take home. The cake was delivered and set up on time, the presentation of it was beautiful - even better than we expected - and our guests raved about the taste. We could not have been happier!

I love Child's! They people are fantastic and the cakes are reasonably priced. We called around to a bunch of bakeries and Child's by far had the best price. Also the expensive places were very rude to me when I asked to do a tasting during xmas week. Jeff and I live in California and we were only going to be out for the week. Child's Pastry had no problem with meeting us during that time. The cake is really delicious. Jeff is not a big sweets person and he loved it! The butter cream frosting is very light without being too sweet. The carrot cake with cream cheese frosting is great!

This bakery is amazing. We just our son's first birthday and bought the cake from here. The design was spot on, and the icing was perfect. I'm not an icing fan because it's usually too sweet of there is too much. Child's icing is JUST RIGHT, even their black icing tastes great.

I have waited a week to post a review to give me some time to cool down. I think I am sufficiently calmed down now to write an objective review I have lived in Denver for over 30 years. Child's Bakery has been a renown institution for as long as I've been in Denver. I haven't been there for 10 years, but I knew where I wanted to go when I needed a cake for a baby shower. I was surprised when I walked in - the cases were empty and the new location was very small. A very nice, young lady asked me what I wanted to order. I said that I'd never ordered a baby shower cake and needed help. No suggestions were given, instead I was repeatedly asked what I wanted. Finally the owner came over and was very irritated with me. I kept saying that I didn't know what to order and needed help. I was hoping for some guidance or even a book to look through. I finally just ordered a sheet cake, paid $85 (!) and walked out. I then looked at Yelp (too late) and realized I should've gone elsewhere. 10 days later I arrive at the scheduled time to pick up that cake. I was told it wasn't there, but would be there "shortly". Long story - the cake was delivered by the woman (owner?) 40 minutes later. She walked in, put the cake in the counter, and walked into the back of the store. No eye contact with me, no apologies. And the cake? It was pretty. The filling and frosting were very good. The cake was bland. Overall, it was an ok cake, but King Soopers does a better job, with better service and more reliable. And cheaper! It's so sad that such a great bakery has fallen so low. I strongly suggest you go elsewhere for a cake.

How have I worked so close to this shop and not known about it for so long? A friend got a gift certificate from a charity event so we stopped in recently. The selection was great and was only overshadowed by the taste. I'm definitely a fan and will be back soon!

A cake shop for any occasion: My family has used Child's for: weddings, anniversary, birthdays, and other special occasions. Each time they make a cake, we are surprised how tasty and moist the cakes are. Best in Denver!

Went in for a scheduled wedding cake tasting appointment but we left 40 minutes later without our cake samples or meeting with the person in charge of that. I guess the decorator got stuck in traffic. Shit happens. We get that. But the shop just seemed disorganized and the staff seemed untrained. While we were waiting, a customer came in to pick up her cupcakes but the woman working the counter couldn't find her order. Eventually we asked the woman at the counter if she could just give us our samples so we could go home and she tried to find them but she kept taking phone orders and eventually came back empty-handed. We left dissatisfied and were never contacted to resolve the situation, which I thought was kind of unprofessional. Nice enough people and seemingly fair prices for the cakes, but we won't be using Child's for our wedding.
