The thing that I like most about Alfalfa's is the eating area. It has a fireplace! and big comfortable tables that make it quite pleasurable to spend a meal time there. I could do with a few more options in the hot food section, but the salad bar is incredible and there are always lots of soups on tap. Yes, the prices are high, but the food is delicious and good food costs money to grow/produce. We are definitely happy customers.

I really want to like Alfalfa's Market more than I do. The prepared food is just OK, nothing extraordinary, and the salad bar is so so at best. I do like that they focus on organic foods and seem to be environmentally conscious, politically correct and socially aware, but the prices are so high! Most of the people who work there are nice, but not always the most helpful. The cheese section is extraordinary, but it's less fun to explore when the ones tending shop are not very enthusiastic about their job. In a word: meh.

What a nice store! We went on a local's suggestion, and we had such a great experience. At the order-your-own-sandwich bar, the staff was very helpful. A supervisor heard us ask about sprouts to put on our sandwiches, and within a moment or two he came over with plain alfalfa sprouts and a mix of radish/alfalfa/broccoli sprouts. He opened the package just for us! Isn't that great? After purchasing sandwiches, salad, and drinks, we were surprised by the size and beauty of the eating area. It had wood beam ceilings and a beautiful stone fireplace. Loved it!

When I first moved to Colorado the most popular natural grocier was Alfalfa's. Back then I didn't frequent it very much but I still knew the name very well. They were a staple for the Front Range. Eventually I happily became a customer! Years later another Boulder based grocier merged with Alfalfa's and thus the name was changed to Wild Oats. I was fairly devout at that point at being a regular customer there. The prices were reasonable on some items when you consider it to be the kind of grocery store it is. Later still Wild Oats merged with Texas based Whole Foods which in certain instances has created some distress amongst long time natural grocery shoppers for various reasons. The prices went up considerably at least from my own observations for sure. Now it seems things have come full circle again and some individuals that started up the original Alfalfa's are back in it again with a revitalized store. The selection here is wonderful but at times similar to Whole Foods in merchandise and prices. The produce, cheese and desserts are awesome! Much of the merchandise is locally produced so you can have a free conscious in spending here because your money is staying local. This store also has a liquor section and while this particular area does not have a huge selection they have what counts. They carry harder to find beers from local breweries like from Crystal Springs Brewery in Boulder and Del Norte Brewing out of Denver. If you are a natural grocier aficionado then you should go to one of the natural grociers that popularized it and brought it to the forefront along the Front Range and the greater area and one such place would be Alfalfa's.

I was so looking forward to Alfalfa's coming to Louisville, it is so ridiculously expensive that I will never ever go back. I'm not even going there for lose leaders. I ran in there for a quick lunch $20 later and I felt ripped off. Walking around I was like this place is never going to make it. I'll continue to shop at Sprouts, Trader Joe's and Whole foods all of which have good prices when you shop carefully. Good luck Alfalfa's my neighbors all feel the same way. The Isabelle Farm shop is right up the street from me on Baseline, they even have better deals.

Whole Foods Who? Alfalfa's is where its at. Huge store, tons of options, samples throughout, and an entire section dedicated to feasting and coffee drinking! I also love the liquor store. It's an all in one stop and it blows the others out of the water.

Not sure what to write. It's Whole Foods but not - still in the whole-paycheck category. Large hot food/deli area, adjoining perhaps the greatest contribution ever - they have a cafe style area in that corner of the store where you can sit to enjoy OZO espresso, your hot food, wi-fi and the fireplace. Other notables I've seen - bread is 50% off after 8pm, they have a raw food fridge, the bulk section is decent and features quite a large selection of liquid items (many olive oils, balsamic, honey, maple syrup, etc). My word of warning - the hot food is oh so tempting, but oh so expensive. See you there!

When Alfalfa's was in Boulder the first time, my mom shopped there some, and then it went out of business. Apparently, being 4 years old, I said something like, "oh....poor Alfalfa's." Well, now my feelings are "oh....poor Alfalfa's...for thinking I can be duped into paying out the nose..." I kind of thought that Whole Foods was the pinnacle of exorbitant food pricing, but my golly was I wrong. I browsed the produce section here and it actually made Whole Foods looks reasonable- unthinkable! When I was visiting, Alfalfa's going rate for non-organic kiwi was $1 per fruit. What?! I honestly have never seen them more than $.5 at Whole Foods, and they are typically $.25-.30 at Sprouts. Looking elsewhere in the store, nothing really popped our at me as being any different than Whole Foods. I do like, however, that their food court area is very nice, has some interesting looking baked goods, and most importantly, has Sushi Zanmai in their food court. I definitely like that over the Whole Foods option. They do have a small liquor store by the entrance but the prices were not indicative of being in a supermarket, and the selection was rather limited. They also have a wide variety of flavored olive oils and vinegars, which I could see myself returning here for. However, given the prices for every other item in this store, I will probably shop elsewhere for everything else, and come here solely for the few items that are unique to Alfalfa's. It also doesn't help that the parking lot is an madhouse. My first visit, someone was trying to park an RV in it. Only in Boulder would someone park as inefficient a vehicle as possible in a health food store, then go pay way more than necessary for groceries.

The new Alfalfas at the old Whole Foods location at Arapahoe and Broadway is great. Being new it is clean, well organized and efficient with a nice staff. I loved all the sustainable and organic foods. In many ways it is very similar to whole foods with better prices. A bonus us that the boulder location is the only location and thus it has a liquor license. They have organic and biodynamic wines. My only issue is the lack if parking at the already crowded store. :)

Of all the natural grocery stores in Boulder, Alfalfa's is my favorite. Not only is it closest to my house (always a plus), but it has an amazing, quality selection of grocery items that I think surpasses the other (larger) stores in the area. In a given amount of shelf space, they choose to have far more breadth and diversity of items to choose from than other markets. For example, they have the largest number of brands of maple syrup I've seen; they carried graham flour when no one else had it; they have one of my favorite white balsamic vinegars (Belazu); they have some of my favorite non-health-food store brands like Bon Maman jam, and Cape Cod chips. They don't waste tons of shelf space on crappy in-house brands like Whole Foods does (monopoly, anyone?). The produce section is immaculate with a good selection. The only negatives I've found are: many of their bakery items are behind the counter so you have to ask for them (I never do), vs. the many pre-packaged cookies and things that other stores have. Their ready-to-eat selections can't really compete with the giant Whole Foods, of course, although last summer's ceviche-by-the-ounce was a standout. In my last batch of sushi, the rice was undercooked, sadly. And one time they were all out of string cheese (boo). But overall, a much better store than the Wild Oats/Whole Foods it replaced.

I love having a grocery store in Downtown Boulder again. It's better than Whole Foods in some ways and not as good as Whole Foods in other ways, but it's definitely a good option for grabbing a healthy meal or some groceries while on foot or on bike downtown. Their prices compare unfavorably to other grocery stores, even including Whole Foods, but favorably to dining out on Pearl Street. The service is good. All of their employees have seemed attentive so far. They have a neat dining area. The salad bar has an adequate selection but not as much variety as Whole Foods.

I like Alfalfas simples for the fact that it isn't Whole Foods. This completely-remodeled store simply outshines Whole Foods 10 to 1 when it comes to presentation and overall selection. Just the fact that they offer up Intelligentsia coffee, Sushi Zanmai and an incredibly friendly, highly knowledgeable staff is enough for me to call Alfalfas my new grocery store here in Boulder. I should probably mention the amazing olive oil/vinegar area and the fantastic bread/cheese selection too.

This store is awesome!! Great customer service, exceptional food, just an all around pleasant atmosphere from the time you walk in the store until the time you leave. The employees have always been more than helpful every time I have needed a question answered.

An all natural food store with a huge selection of everything. It is pricey, all natural foods are, but be prepared when you go in. The staff is extremely friendly though, especially in the beer section. I went in twice during a weekend visit to Boulder.

Some 25+ years ago, my parents used to haul me from the suburbs up to Boulder for our weekly grocery shopping trip to Alfalfa's. At the time, the Alfalfa's that used to be in this location was the only "health food" store around. So when I saw that Alfalfa's was returning to that very same location, I was interested in checking it out. They don't carry any brands or types of foods that you wouldn't find in any other specialty store of it's kind, but what you will find are some unique conveniences. Local Madhava honey and agave in bulk - grab whatever size container you need and start filling it up! Need a specialty vinegar? Well grab a container and start pouring what you need. There are at least 14 different vinegars/oils that you can purchase in bulk. The bulk section of Alfalfa's is superior to that of Whole Foods simply in it's variety and ease of use. Their meat counter was full of various cuts of beef, lamb, chicken, and a few different cuts of bison. If you're hungry, there is a section towards the back of the store with freshly prepared foods or you can request something specific. While some of the items are more expensive than what I would find at Vitamin Cottage, they weren't anything more than Whole Foods. Their produce section also consisted of more organic items than what is typically found at Whole Foods. And those that aren't organic seem to be more clearly labeled. The other things that you don't find at any other specialty store in the area is on-site liquor and electric charging station for your electric car. There is a decent selection of wines, including organic & local blends, as well as many local microbrews. Tequila, whiskey, gin, rum and other liquor can also be found in here - several of them being local brands as well. Around the front of the building are a few spots where you can charge up your grocery-getting Nissan Leaf. I appreciate this Alfalfa's making an effort to carry as many local products as possible. If I lived in Boulder, this would definitely be my go-to shopping location. If you have

Yes, Alfalfa's is expensive. Knowing this, you can still bargain shop and have an enjoyable experience. Part of that is their amount of samples and friendly staff. First visit - I noticed and inquired about their Mondo Vecchio sausage. They sampled me on both options and I ended up with $.60 worth of Lop Chong slices for my friends. I was cheap, but they didn't scoff at me. Third visit - I noticed chicken waffle sandwiches at a station. I didn't realize this, but that must be a sample station where they cook featured recipes. It was Curried Waffle Club Sandwiches that day. I left with a small delicious sample. Whole Foods and Vitamin Cottage are bound to win the price wars. However, raw food bars were at a cheaper sale price here than Whole Foods. They sample you every day (that I've been) on olive oils. Some bulk food items are cheaper here. You may win out if you pay attention.

I will preface this review by stating that I did not actually shop for technical groceries at Alfalfa's. Why am I writing this review then, you ask? Well, I got lazy one night and decided to check out their to-go bar. I am a big fan of the take out section of the Whole Foods on Pearl, but I hate fighting the crowds in there so I NEVER go. I heard Alfalfa's was similar and just as good, so I decided to try it out. First off, while their offerings are good, the selection and options they have are probably a third of Whole Foods. They have a counter with the usual precooked meats, vegetables, salads, and sauces, but beyond that, they offer a meager soup and salad station. Conceding the lack of options, I will say that what I did order was fantastic. I took home some mint lamb, carrots, and tub of couscous. It was some of the best lamb I've ever had, and the carrots were great.

Best Healthy food store in town - for quantity, quality as well as using tons of local food, supporting our local economy & being independently owned. The Deli and Bakery are very tasty as well.

I know it has not been open very long, but so far I'm impressed! I think the quality of the food surpasses a lot of the inventory that is offered at Whole Foods, without the snobbery, and the staff is friendly. The prices are a nice medium between Sunflowers and Whole Foods also. I don't think I will do my regular shopping here, but I will probably stop in for extra things during the month. The liquor store inside of the store is a really big plus too. It's the first I've seen in Colorado.

I'm giving them 4 stars for their Vind-a-licious, wheat-free cake slice (yellow curry, ginger, spice-cake topped with sesame icing?!) It was insanely good; I'm sure fattening but it didn't make me sick at least...and I deserved it after climbing three days in a row. Other than that, they have a huge selection and I'd rather give my money to them over a corporate giant like WF - they have too much of mine already. Oh, and also want to mention, had their soup and it was extremely salty - was still okay but they may want to tone down on the sodium.

Started fine, then prices skyrocketed above whole foods. But worst thing is items billed as "fresh" are not. A pie they said was baked today had mold on the inside. We returned it and the next pie had mold in it. And fresh tomatoes turned out rotten. Can't trust alfalfas!

Alfalfa's is back, and better than ever. It's nice to have a locally-owned natural grocery in the location that started it all, at least around here. It's a big improvement over the Wild Oats/Whole Foods it replaced. Great produce, great deli, good stock overall. I seem to find the items I'm looking for here more often than I did at Wild Oats, and they make more of an effort to highlight local brands than do other stores. The attached liquor store is a huge convenience, too. Alfalfa's is my neighborhood market again, and it's the best in town.

Love this place. Stumbled across by accident whilst on a day trip to Boulder. But I found a heap of gluten free options there. Staff were very helpful too.

I would say this place and Whole Foods have about 80% of the same items with the remaining 20% being locally produced, little known brands. I loved the fact you can buy a single egg for $.40. Extensive selection of health and beauty items and the prepared food section looked great as well. It cracks me up to see all the hippies shopping there. How the hell can they afford those prices? Just wondering.

Big, gorgeous, abundant, interesting, well laid out, terrific customer service, and so darned expensive I bought nothing, and left without remorse; especially when I saw the $9.99 price for a rotisserie chicken - and not a very big one. The hell with that - for $2 less I'll take the hormones in the "Colossal" twice-the-size rotisserie chix at King Sooper's that serves 5-7 people!!!!!

So glad I finally got to check out Alfalfa's on my latest Boulder trip! This store is amazing, and despite what people say, I didn't notice that it was any more expensive than Whole Foods (and my MIL says it's cheaper). They have a lot of really neat niche products here that foodies would love. My husband and I found some super delicious Irish butter (NOT Kerrygold, even though that stuff is great, this stuff was way better), and some other neat goodies. The produce here is GORGEOUS, and much nicer looking than the stuff at WF (honestly). Worth the price for yummy veggies, especially if you're vegetarian (like me!) I definitely will return to Alfalfa's on future visits to Boulder, and I'm definitely a fan!
