I cannot for the life of me figure out how this place has 4 stars. We got a calzone and a pizza tonight along with a hero sandwich. The calzone was dry and partially burned. I was so disappointed as this place used to be so good before I moved to Florida. When I came back to Colorado, I told my husband that Mama Alvinos was the bomb. I could not believe how the quality of the food had gone down. The pizza was huge with lots of toppings but absolutely tasteless. There was nothing outstanding about it and to add insult to injury, we got horrible stomach aches. Maybe they were having a bad night? I don't know. What I do know is we won't be going back.

Sauce is great THE BEST PIZZA I HAVE EVER HAD...Service so so, the pasta IS AWFUL. I WOULD NEVER ORDER AGAIN. I ATE THREE NOODLES AND TOLD THE WAITRESS WHO CAME UP WITH A STAMMERED STATEMENT ABOUT NEW PROCESS TO MAKE THEM. The cashier after I told her I could not eat the pasta, said, wow sorry it was not good. NEVER DID I EXPECT TO PAY FOR THIS AWFUL PASTA, SO I paid 8.00 for two meat balls, as that is all I ate and they would not take it off the bill. SO MUCH FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. The waitress was not really wanting to be there that day and it surely showed to everyone in the place. Heard the next booth say the same thing. If she moved any faster she would have been going backwards. GREAT PIZZA AND SAUCE AND that was all. sorry I always look forward to my pizza fix when I arrive in town. Not sure I will do it again. I rate the Pasta -1..UCK. PS I have over 25 years experience in food rest. and owned my own.

Not sure why I only gave Mama Al's a 3 star review originally... must have been having a bad day. I love Mama's, the pizza is killer as are the calzones. Service is always good. Marcos Coal Fired and Mama's are my favorite pizza places in Denver.

Office friends had lunch here today....the sauce was even better than usual ! I ordered the "Big Mama" calzone....which has ham, pepperoni, sausage, onions, peppers and olives....and TONS of cheese...smothered in their sauce....let's just say I am skipping dinner.

Ravioli's were awesome!! Very casual, low key type place. Reasonably priced and the portions were very large. Friendly staff. Would recommend...

Good hearty food, pleasant waitstaff, great prices and quick service! Perfect for a quick lunch or a fun dinner out. The calzones are big enough for 2 - bring a friend and share!

My wife and I found Mama Alvino's through Yelp, and it got a good enough rating and reviews that we decided to give it a try. Overall it was a very good experience. The only reason I can think of that it didn't get 5 stars is that it simply didn't "wow" me. It was very excellent, good portions (especially for the price), friendly staff, etc, but I didn't feel like I had found a secret gem or anything, just a really good eatery. I will definitely be going back, but I don't think I will be having cravings for Mama.

The calzones are way too big. How do they expect me to eat that whole thing?! And there is way too much cheese in there. I can hardly cut it with a fork. Ug! I got the veggie and everything tasted too fresh and well seasoned. I may have to return.

The service was quick, and for the price, the food can't be beat. I would highly recommend this for a great lunch experience.

Thursday January 1st 2015. Time was about 18:45hrs ish Hubs wanted to eat something else, but since its SNOWING ALOT and we don't want to drive down south further, to Mama Alvino's Pizzeria we went. YES, when we enter, we can just choose where we want to seat. We opt to seat all the way back. Our lovely server gave us the Menu. From their comprehensive Menu, we opt for the following items : * Cheese Bread ($3.89) with Sauce ($0.50) * LARGE Meatball CALZONE ($8.69) * SMALL Pizza with Anchovy, Pineapple and Jalapeno ($11.74) * SMALL Pizza with Ground Beef, Black Olives and Jalapeno ($11.74) * 2 Cups of Coffee at $1.09 each, hence it was ($2.18) Our lovely server is so inviting. She answers all our questions with regards to the Marinara Sauce and ingredients found in each item we ordered. The service was indeed prompt. TAKE NOTE TO SELF : SMALL PIZZA is NOT SMALL in my books.. I guess we have ate thru the Cheese Bread and Meatball Calzone, hence if you are a small eater, for the Pizza opt for Mini. Both the dipping sauce for the Cheese Bread and the ones in the Meatball Calzone is the same, though we feel it has different notes to it. When we address this to our lovely server, she was indeed surprised and told us all the Marinara sauce is all TOMATO Based and all the same... Hubs like all the items we ordered especially his own personal pizza combination of Ground Beef, Black Olives and Jalapeno. PORTIONS are INDEED GENEROUS! Plenty to share around if you come with a PARTY! For my personal SMALL Pizza, indeed its overloaded with Anchovy, in which that is GENEROUS, coz NOT ALL PIZZA eateries that I have been to.. Hence my Pizza order tends to be over-salted from the Anchovy itself.. My own mistake! But I like my personal take of those combination, SWEET, SALTY and SPICY for my Pizza! SCORE! DEFINITELY returning when needed. 3.5 stars in our books! Left this establishment about 19:40hrs ish. The opening hours of Mama Alvino's Pizzeria is as following : * Monday - Friday : 10:30am - 9pm * Saturday : 11am - 9pm * Sunday : 11am - 8pm Another note : This establishment is located at Chambers Road, just EAST Of King Soopers. Mama Alvino's Pizzeria 15179 E. Colfax Ave, Aurora, CO 80011 Tel : (303)-364-1894 @22/2015

Awful! Awful! Awful! Everything from the service to the check. We had a party of 3 adults, 1 teenager and a 6 year old. The waitress took 10 minutes in an empty resturant to rudely come to our table and ask if we were ready. I asked if she could get us menus and water to start. From there she only took our order and after 35 minutes she brought our food then never came until she brought the check that had a 20% gratuity? The 6 year old counts as a party of 5 because she is a human being! The portion was small for the calzones and they charge extra for add ons on top of the price for toppings? We walked out very disappointed and will never go again or recommend to any other families that have to stay at Children's Hospital Aurora down the street!!

These guys have a lot of work to do to win back my business. They were never all that great to begin with, but my latest visit has me very disappointed in both the food and the attitude of the management to the point of no return. I called in an order for two individual pizzas for me to pick up. The lady on the phone took my name and order and told me it would be about 15 minutes. As I arrived I held the door for a man who was walking up behind me. As soon as we entered a lady came over and asked him what he wanted. He said he wanted to order to go and she told him they were closed. Then she looked at me as if I should leave. I explained that I had an order to be picked up and that I thought they closed at 9, it was 8:40. She asked me my name and said yes she had my pizzas. I looked past her to the kitchen where there were two men still rolling out dough and making pizzas. I asked why she had turned the customer away so early when it was obvious the kitchen was still working. She told me that the "boss man" tells her when they close and motioned to one of the men making pizzas. I told the woman that I didn't think it was good practice to turn customers away well before closing time and asked her to pass my concern along to the manager for me who was within earshot during our whole conversation. She handed me two boxes of pizza that were sitting out on the counter and charged me. As I left I saw a sign in the window that read open. Once I got my food home, I began to wish they had turned me away too. I ordered a pepperoni pizza. The crust medium thick but flavorless, dry, and tasted frozen. The sauce was sweet and underseasoned and left a strange taste in my mouth. The restaurant didn't even include any parmesan cheese or red pepper flakes with my order. I finished about a piece and a half of my individual pizza before I gave up and tossed it out. It was awful and it is really unlike me not to finish something made of bread. I have had store bought frozen pizzas with more palatability and character than that and couldn't imagine trying to eat a whole calzone made of that dough. I have been coming to Mama Alvino's for almost 20 years on and off and this last visit just left me with no excuse to continue coming back. I can usually put up with a place if the food is mediocre, but I will not give my hard earned money to a place that does not value their guests.

Mama Alvino's is a well known pizzeria in Colorado. They always have large portions that are fixed with care. The food taste great and is homemade! Only issue is they need other locations close to me, but happy to see this business here in this establishment for so long. I have been to this establishment on more than 10 occasions. Pretty consistent.

I ordered take out from here. I took a large pepperoni pizza. Given the fact that I've been here on different occasions, I was looking forward to eating. I get home pizza looks delicious but as I soon as I took a bite, I almost threw up! The pizza I was given was inedible!! It had a strong alcoholic taste!! So potent you could also smell it. I assumed they probably used wine in the sauce, which I think is common given this was an Italian restaurant. I called and asked to speak to a manager about the situation and to be disbelief he said it was the yeast in the bread that caused the nasty taste. I did mention to him that I could not eat it because it taste was unpleasant. He told me others have complained about the same taste and basically told me he couldn't do anything for me. Very disappointed and I will not return. I don't want to take a chance in getting an alcoholic pizza for more than $15.

Best Pizza and Calzones. Period. It is the greatest pizza you will eat. Crust is always done to perfection and sauce is tasty.

Wow! What a great restaurant. We ordered the pizza to carry out. We ordered the homestyle pizza. The crust and topping were fresh and tasty. The restaurant was clean and the staff very friendly. You may pay a little more but the quality and service are well worth it! Stop by it is just off 225 at Chambers.

Went there recently and had a Sausage Hero sandwich. I stop eating after halfway through the sandwich. No flavor as far as the sausage goes, several hours later went home and vomited the food. I believe the sausage was under cooked, I should have complained at the time but just felt it was a bad meal. The last time I was there was about 4 years ago which was not bad at the time. I know one thing Mama Alvino's has indeed gone downhill and I will not be going back ever again...

Tonight was my second time at Mama's,its real good. I was first told about this place by one of my friends who's very picky about what they eat so I figured it had to be good. We showed up about 6:30 and seated ourselves and with in a minute or two our waitress brought us menus and got our drink order.A few minutes later she was back with drinks and took our order, then about 15min later the 3 different pizza's we ordered were hot and tasty. We all left with to go boxes. All in all its a pretty good pizza joint that I'll go back to for sure, Give it a try I'm sure you'll like it, I'm glad I did.

I just visited this restaurant on Sunday. I have to say, I love the pizza. I ordered the 'big mama' medium pizza which is a combo that includes meats (pepperoni, sausage, beef...) and vegetables (mushrooms, onions, peppers...). I also ordered their jumbo brownie for myself which was chewy and delicious. Mom and Dad got their small half pepperoni and half Italian sausage and they had no complaints at all. Although I also wanted to get calzones for the next day, the calzones are best served fresh and hot. The best part of the pizza is the cheese. There's mozzarella and there's lots of it. The pizza is greasy and the sauce is hard to explain but it has a kind of zip to it. If you are going for a calzone, there is no ricotta so just be aware of that if you are a fan. Now here's the deal folks. I have been dealing with Mama's for about twenty (20) plus years now. First off- DO NOT have them deliver! Our family stopped that practice years ago after they showed up an hour late and the pizza was frozen. In fact, we refused to take the pizza or pay for it and sent the driver back in shame- we live maybe ten (10) minutes away. Second and this is hard to do but- Do not eat in. Although I find the staff pleasant, the restaurant can get crowded and the staff can get overwhelmed. Finally, Do NOT order over the phone. Go to the restaurant and order the pizza. YES, I know we are a society of instant gratification but if you go to the restaurant, order the pizza and wait twenty (20) minutes or so, you will get what you want without having any major issues. I will say that the cost is also a factor: one (1) small half and half, one (1) medium big mama (i.e. deluxe), one (1) brownie, with tax all came to thirty three dollars ($33.00), but I and the family love the food.

The first time we ate at Mama Alvino's my wife and I showed up at 8:30 on a Friday night. We felt bad after discovering that they close at 9. I guess we are used to New York hours, but closing at 9pm on a Friday night?! Really? Despite our late arrival the waitress was very nice, and our calzones were very good. The next time we ordered a pizza for delivery which was also quite good, but the crust was a little bland.

Probably deserves just two stars but I'm going to assume we experienced a one-time bad night. Saturday night, for whatever reason, "they" gave the second server the night off. So, one server, packed place (including the private room), guess how that went. There was some vocal complaints from others, but I will say the one server that was there was working her a-- off running around, was friendly while doing so (saving the 3rd star), and the bus-girl started helping out with some of the service things. The dishwasher apparently had the night off too as our plates arrived dirty. The pizza was good but nothing special. I liked the thicker than usual crust but that is a personal preference and something for you thin-crust wackos ;) to watch out for. Decor could use some improving.

This mom and pop restaurant served up the best calzone I've ever had. We don't have anything close like this place at home. The calzone, and I had a small, was so large and full of tasty ingredients, I wasn't hungry at dinner time. I will definitely be back.

Worse place ever. Ravioli was clearly frozen, sauce was overly sweet. Nothing was freshly made. Service was absolutely awful. Unfriendly waitress who never once came to see how we were or to freshen our drinks or earn her tip. Frozen food which was simply boiled and microwaved took forever to come out. Ravioli was a small portion though my friend's calzone was very large. I needed to order something to go and it took a while to get the wait staff's attention and when I did she still took her time coming over. To go order took a while but finally came with the bill. Even though this waitress had taken the bill payment from the meal we ate in house directly from us, she did not take the payment for the to go item. She also did not tell us she wasn't going to and we needed to pay up front. I finally had to ask her. Good customer service would have been to take the payment. The final straw was the other clientele. People (adults!) shooting spitballs and playing with their food; throwing things at each other. Other couples making out in a booth. The seats were hard as rocks, no cushion whatsoever. We watched the wait person (the one who was ignoring us) use the same broom to clean both the carpeted floor and the seats. The sausage (for the pizza?) was bagged and frozen. Just awful. Do not eat here.

Pizza was made by young kids the cheese smelled horrible and the sauce too had a foul odor. the dough was not cooked enough and as you can see where I am going THIS PLACE SUCKS do not order pizza from here. disgusting seriously

Unrated and should be appreciated. I enjoy the pasta, pizza, but the calzones are the best I have ever had. This place knows how to cook a calzone and not make it too dry or doughy. I am glad this place has not changed their recipes.

Good pizza with excellent crust and sauce. The meatball calzone is worth a try. Stick with a small unless you are very hungry.

Great calzones that are huge and covered in marinara! Not a huge fan of this strip mall location, but I enjoyed the friendly service and good food at good prices.

This is a hearty A-OK, and I'd definitely try Mama Alvino's again. I visited tonight with a group of about a dozen people, and it seemed that most everyone enjoyed their meal. Most people opted for the calzones, which seems to be what Mama Alvino's is known for, but I went with the Mama's Plate. It's a VERY large serving of pasta, topped with a their great, spicy sauce. On the down side, the pasta was pretty mushy and the meatballs had no flavor. I busted out the salt, which I very rarely do. But - bonus - like most Italian dives, they had red pepper flakes and Parmesan on the table, so you can add your own flavor if you like. The service was quick and friendly - our entire group was in and out in less than an hour and a half. I doubt it was more than 15 minutes from the time we ordered to the time the food was out. Plus, I don't think there was more than a five minute lapse between when the first and last dish was brought out - a solid achievement for a group of this size. So, even though I wasn't wowed by the food, I'd be happy to give this place another try.

Finding a hidden jewel in the city is always exciting, finding a hidden jewel that I have driven past for 12 years is intoxicating and I am still drunk with delight. Yesterday after riding in what seemed like a hurricane, several of us decided to celebrate our successful ride with lunch. I am the first to say Mexican but Jen persisted that we eat the best Calzones ever. OK by me; I am always up for the best ever. In the King Soopers strip mall at Colfax and Chambers around to the east and back of the strip and hidden by trees is Mama Alvino's. We are greeted by friendly servers and I noticed a note on the door about not seating you until your party is complete, this says to me this place is really popular at normal dining hours. The menu offers spaghetti, pizza, a few other Italian dishes and CALZONES. Three of us ordered the small veggie and one ordered the meatball. When the Calzones arrived, the size of a Nerf football, you could see the deliciousness of the crust. This is not pizza crust wrapped around ingredients, this is obviously such a perfect crust with sauce poured over the top (you can order on the side if you prefer). I tapped the top of my Calzone with a fork and it opened slightly to show all the veggie ingredients (fried before mixed with a sauce to give them extra flavor) and the perfect amount of cheese blended in with everything else. The first bite is heaven. These are the best Calazones I have ever had. I could not wait to Yelp Mama Alvino's and then I saw I was not the only one to have found this hidden jewel. Look at the other reviews, all you see are happy Peeps singing the praises of Mama Alvino's. I will update Mama Alvino's to 5 stars when I take one of these treasures home to The husband, as he is the one with the discriminating Italian taste buds.

Mama Alvino's (Mama's) is one of my absolute favorite spots in all of Colorado. The pasta dishes are mediocre (for what I've tried) but the pizza and calzones are awesome! Be prepared that if you go during lunch, you will very likely have to wait for a table and it will take an hour to get in/out, unless you call ahead and place your order so that it's ready when you get there. If you do, you can easily do a 30-45 min lunch and get back to the office. Take-out is also well worth it! Ordering advice: go ahead and get the large calzone. It's enormous, but it's only a couple of dollars more and then you'll have leftovers! Mama's is well worth the inexpensive pricetag!

  • Stephanie M.

I LOVE the pizza here!! There is the perfect balance between cheese ad sauce and toppings. I love how the pepperoni's are underneath the cheese. And the drinks are ginormous!!!! If you like pizza then you must try Mama Alvino's!!

I've only been here a couple times, but each time I've never been disappointed. Pizza is very good and the service is good nothing too special though. If you're ever in the area I would definitely recommend you stop by for a bite to eat!

I love Mama Alvinos! I am sad I moved out of the area so its a trek to now get there. The best garlic bread and pizza I've had. Only bad side is they dont serve draught beers. Oh well!! Amazing and want to go back soon

  • Bill C.

A pizza joint, I believe. The calzones were fabulous, tender crust and well-stuffed, and smothered in some outstanding red sauce (I'd drink it out of a wine glass, I would). Near my work, so I know I will be back. I saw some pizza at an adjoining table, and I'm sure I will return for some of that. They looked awesome. I notice some bad reviews for the pasta - sad, but often the best pizza places have mediocre pasta, but I won't pass judgment until I give it a taste. Waitresses are very friendly and easy on the eyes too, which made me increase my tip, pushing my outlay to just over 20 bucks for me and my co-worker. Price is right. One note - unless you plan on taking the rest of the day off, order the small calzone. It's plenty.

This is one of those Aurora institutions that has been around for decades. We've been visiting for so long I really can't remember when we started. I know my now 36 year old son was still in elementary school. You can do the math...I'd rather not think about how many years have passed. Don't really care for the spaghetti. It's more like noodles. But the sauce, meatballs and sausage they serve with it are so good I'll sometimes order it just to get those. What we really like, and usually order are the calzones or pizza. Yea, they're not like what you get in New York or Chicago - I'm very familiar with and quite fond of both. But guess what? This ain't New York or Chicago. Relax and enjoy the food.

I was at work and was faced with eating at the cafeteria or starving. So I decided to order take out and have it delivered. Craving Italian I hopped onto Yelp and found this little mom and pop restaurant just down the road. I ordered the pasta with meatballs since I wasn't in the mood for pizza. I was told it was a $10 min so I added the sausage. It still wasn't enough so I added mushrooms as well. The order came out to $11.24. Delivery time was estimated at 40-45 minutes and I was told the delivery guy wouldn't come into the hospital and will call me when he was outside. That in itself really did not constitute delivery for me but the idea of caf food rang strongly in my head. The food was delivered in time and I had to tip the delivery guy just to run down to meet him and run back up to work. As soon as I opened the container I was a little disappointed. Since I had to make all the additions to meet the $10 minimum they crammed everything into the container and I think what I got was equivalent to one sliced mushroom for an additional 99 cents. Please use a larger container next time! The pasta itself was a bit mushy but I did like the meatballs and sausage very much. I might have been better off with the pizza since it is called a pizzeria. Maybe next time I'm faced with the dreaded cafeteria food again.....

I feel lucky to work nearby otherwise I probably would never have tried this place. It's in a King Soopers shopping center. So far, have only done the personal pizza's for lunch but to be honest, that's all really I need to try. They are very good and this is definitely a lunch time destination. Perhaps I will try the calzones soon. Check it out!

  • Jordan A.

A bunch of DND-playing geeks introduced me to this place. All they ever get is calzones. So that's what I've always had, never anything else. The calzones are good and rich, but don't necessarily make this place one of my favorites. That strip mall and the parking lot are the scariest I've ever seen. I do stay away from whichever calzone has the anchovies--you can't taste anything but salt.

Mama Alvino, u sexy bitch. With the big big calzones, I want to bury my face in them. Give me a big mama and I'd die a happy man. I live in Arvada, but we'll roll to Aurora at the drop of a hat for mama's bosom of love. The spaghetti is home made pasta in home made gravy. Good stuff, I'd pour the sauce on my wife and lick it off. Thank God she inroduced me to this place.

  • Ori S.

Mama's Alivino's are known for their calzones, which I haven't had in a few years, but were always good. This is my first time eating in. Definitely a hole in the wall, so I ordered some cheesebread and the ravioli. The cheese bread was like cheap grocery French bread with a pinch of shredded cheese on it. The Ravioli was like frozen ravioli you buy at the grocery store with a weak bland sauce on it, in which you only get six or seven raviolis for $7.50 and comes with same weak garlic bread. I also order a pizza to go, which looked better than it taste, very bland home made taste .

My wife's family loves Mama Alvino's. They absolutely love the calzones. Me, well I'm just not a huge calzone fan, so it's just okay to me. Personally I wouldn't go out of my way to go eat there. The wife's fam likes eating there so I do when they want to. Otherwise I wouldn't go. Service is okay. The Arnold Palmer that was made for me wasn't bad, so that's good.

Had a good small Big Mama Calzone. The crust was nice and crispy. Only problem for me is that they smothered it with marinara. I keep forgetting to ask for the marinara on the side. I'll try to remember next time. I also wanna try the pizza.

  • Sho G.

Best calzones in Denver hands down. The only place that comes close is a place out in Loveland but I forget the name of it. Its tucked away in the strip mall but if you are any near here and like calzones then you owe it to yourself to at least try it. I can't comment on their pizza but if they use the same sauce that they put on the calzones then you can't lose.

    (5)
  • Lisa M.

This was my go-to lunch place when I worked in Aurora, and I make a point to stop in for a calzone if I'm ever up that way. The calzones are gigantic--plenty for leftovers--and are consistently good. Get there early to beat the lunch rush.

In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
