Best Mexican food I've ever had! Yelp never let's me down. We found this place just passing through on our way home to Denver. $11 for all you can eat buffet which includes a drink. You can't beat this! Fresh, authentic Mexican food, tortillas are homemade right in front of you. Awesome.

good top shelf Margarita - enchlidas were good - husband had steak soft tacos which he said steak was very tender and he loved the sauce they used. We decided to have sopaipias - sorry we did - while the sopaipias was nice and light and flufy - it was served with "honey flovored" corn syrup! very disappointed - would have given them 4 stars but for the corn syrup

After a long, wonderful day at Great Sand Dunes and crane-watching, we went to Calvillas for dinner. As we entered, the manager welcomed us, saying "You are our guest. Please feel at home". And yes, they lived up to it! As soon as we told them we had a couple of vegetarians in our group, they made some delightful veggie sampler platters, and did not charge us extra - they included it as part of the buffet. The veg tamale and enchilada were perfect, and their tres leches was simply amazing. Our server, the manager and other servers too stopped by to ensure that we were being taken care of at all times. Don't miss this place if you are in the vicinity!

I have a profound fondness for Mexican restaurants. It's not just the food but the service and atmosphere too. Most places as soon as you walk in you are treated like a lost family member that has been wandering through the desert for days without food and water. You are quickly ushered to a table, given a huge glass of water, bowl of chips and salsa. Most people are very friendly and you are presented with a menu that has so many exotic options you want one of everything! We'll all my trips to Cavillo's has been this way with one minor but important exception; YOU CAN HAVE ONE OF EVERYTHING. It's an all you can eat Mexican buffet! The food is delicious and exotic and compared to the other places I have been it stands out as the only real place to eat in Alamosa. The irony about this place is when I do go here it is after I have visited the Great Sand Dunes National Park so I have been wandering through a desert for days!

Amazing! Friendly atmosphere courteous employees. They were fast. Some of the best service i have recieved. The food was very well priced and the margaritas were to die for! Wonderful all around!

Read the reviews and decided to try it. Absolutely no regrets! The was amazing. The service was incredible. It was fast and the price was very reasonable. As other's have said, the idea of a Mexican food buffet may seem odd, but it's great. If they don't have something you want on the buffet, they will make it for you. The kids (7 & 9) also liked and the staff was very kid friendly. Will be returning the next time we are in Alamosa.

Good food for a hungry family driving through. The waiter was super friendly and the buffet was both cheap and good. $6 for under 11 years old and $11 for adults... Free for my 2 year old. I got the buffet with the kids, my wife got a flauta plate. After seeing and hearing the fajitas come out to the table next to us, I wished I could have gotten those, but I was happy with the buffet. $35 for a family of 6 is great, especially when the foods good quality.

I live in Alamosa and this is one of my favorite places to eat here. This is a family run institution, with many of the sauces being homemade. I love Calvillos Mexican restaurant! I love the tacos el pasteur, the shrimp cocktail-which is like the kind you get in Mexico with fresh avocado, onions, cilantro and tomato juice. They have a wonderful menu as well as a very extensive buffet. They even serve breakfast in the morning with chilequiles. This is a must visit if you are heading to Alamosa or even make a side trip to eat here. If you live in Alamosa, try using them as caterers for your next function. I have had them cater at least six functions over the years and they did an amazing job!

Unfortunately we did not have as great a meal a other reviewers have described. The buffet was not overly appetizing, most food on it appeared to have been th there a while. The frozen Margaritas were lame. The high point was the bartenders special rocks Margarita and his friendly demeanor. The service was great and extremely friendly, the food.... very disappointing.

LOVE LOVE LOVE! Employees were very pleasant and food was fantastic!!! I LOVE their chips and salsa!! Will be back!

Awesome place! We stopped here to eat after a long day on the Alamosa/LaVeta train. We were greated by a very friendly man and seated minutes after we walked in the door. Their buffet looked amazing! Everything looked extremely fresh. We weren't hungry enough for the buffet so we had menu items. I had the chicken Chimichanga. Amazing! All food was very fresh and tasted wonderful. Their salsa is great too. Our waiter was a very attentive young man with a great sense of humor. He kept our drinks full. Will definitely return for another dinner here when we return to Alamosa.

A jewel of a place to find on vacation. Food was great. And our waiter told us if there was anything we wanted that we did not see out - just ask and he'd take care of us. Service was perfect - and I rate that to a high standard.

I returned to Cavillo's after my last experience there and had to add an addendum. Still has great food (the Green Chili is great with the Valentina Burrito). However, the service was especially slow on the Monday night we were there, which included having to repeat requests. The staff was friendly, and I would definitely return, but I would be prepared to wait as I would not try to buffet.

  • Eric B.

Best Mexican restaurant in Alamosa. Our waiter Jesus had the most soothing voice ever, great service. The setting is pleasant and the service was prompt. Great green chile. Nice family atmosphere.

  • Rosie W.

We found this gem on our last trip here and luckily it's still going strong! Good food some of the salt content is very high and at times very low, but the price is right. Chile casserole is really yummy!

  • Alexander B.

Forget the absolutely fantastic buffet an head around the back to Caviilo's to go. This place has the best taco's tamales and breakfast burittos a person could ask for. Not to mention the Mexican pastries. Try a pastor taco for 1.50 and fall in love.

  • Thomas S.

Cavillo's is an Alamosa institution, which makes it a must visit if you ever find yourself in this odd town in the San Luis Valley. The food is what it is - sauce and cheese covered fare - but the clientele is a bustling crowd of locals. They have a full bar, which makes the experience even better. I do warn that the bathrooms are lacking in size and maintenance.

  • Kristi S.

Excellent service and extremely friendly staff. Buffet is a bargain if you can eat that much. Great variety & they will make things to order. Highly recommend fresh sopapillas & margaritas!

If you are looking for good Mexican food in Alamosa you can't do much better than this place. And, believe it or not, it's a buffet! Really yummy New Mexican / Mexican food. The carnitas here are as good as I've had anywhere.

    (4)
  • Alan M.

Great service, delicious food, well-priced. No complaints.

    (5)
  • Elizabeth H.

I think if you order from the menu it is much better than the same foods that sit (and get soggy) on the buffet. But we enjoy this restaurant because you ALWAYS are greeted by staff, no one acts like you're an inconvenience for coming in--which I see way too often at other restaurants.

  • Kristyl G.

The best place I have ever eaten mexican food!! They have an all you can eat buffet, and if there is something they don't have out you can ask them and they will make it for you FREE of charge...well semi free it's included in the buffet price!! They have the most incredible carnita's ever, in different varieties and all are just as good as the other!! A short run on history, for those not aware. This resteraunt started as a little hole in the wall tiny maybe 600ft building(don't quote me!) as you come into town kitty corner to loaf n jug. Since then it has served such AMAZING food they were able to open two more resteraunts one in center and one in monte vista and of course open their two story always packed huge restaurant in Alamosa(this one I'm yelping) They have a full service bar, and they don't skimp at all on the alchohol which makes for a fun time. On birthdays they bring you a "mexican hat" and dessert and sing you happy birthday too!... This place is a must stop if you are traveling through the san luis valley!!

Some of the best Mexican food I've had in Colorado. Was surprised that it has a buffet; however my fiancé was very pleased with the selection and the quality of the food. I hate buffets but if I came back (which I hope to) I would definitely eat there. They even have a sink set up near the buffet for cleanliness. They also make fresh handmade tortillas at the buffet. I had a burrito and it was unlike any burrito I've ever had simply because of the tortilla. The individuals who work here are amazing and dedicated to their jobs. They keep your drinks full and provide excellent service that's well coordinated. We'd definitely recommend stopping in!

  • Sara P.

Amazing service and authentic food at an affordable price. Order the enchiladas Santa Fe style!

  • Dean P.

Top drawer! My wife and I were passing through Alamosa and decided to stop for an early dinner. We chose to order off the menu and were not disappointed. She had the tacos al pastor, and I enjoyed a pork burrito smothered in green chile. We cleaned it up, finishing every bite. If you're traveling along U.S. Route 160 and craving good Mexican food, make this stop!

    (5)
  • Cyndi J.

Skip the buffet. Order from the menu. I had two margaritas - one was a kiwi margarita - who does that? Our server and the owner both stopped by our table, and the owner said he could do whatever fruit in a margarita I wanted. They blend up fresh fruit. It was incredible! The food here is also delicious. I love the salsa, it's blended well and has a nice tangy, slightly spicy string. We both enjoyed dinner!

    (5)
  • Calin D.

The lunch buffet has a wide variety of authentic Mexican choices. The service was spotty, as I almost poured my own water before asking the bar for one. The vegetarian options are somewhat limited to cheese chiles and salad with shrimp, though there are a few odds and ends to be found if you look. Not a bad choice for lots of options and a reasonable price overall.

    (3)
  • Celeste N.

Very good Mexican food. We had their dinner buffet. Homemade tortillas to make your own tacos. Very wide variety of items to select from. They also have a large desert counter.

    (4)
  • Alex K.

The food was pretty good. It has a nice kick to it, and was very tasty. However, the service wasn't quite up to snuff. Our waiter forgot to bring me my refill of coke, and was all around pretty inattentive. It was definitely not busy either. But if you are in Alamosa, I would say this is the spot for mexican!

  • Natasha V.

First night we arrived in Alamosa we came here for dinner. Tired and hungry from our long day of driving and we got greeted with such a happy and upbeat staff. Our waitress was such a great help and so nice! You can choose from the buffet or the menu. We decided on a single dish dinner, so the menu was our option. My husband actually quoted "these are the best carnitas tacos I ever had" considering he compares everything to his mama's cooking, I would have to say that's a pretty good compliment! I chose the carne asada. And it was definitely something I would choose again! You also have to get a glass of horchata! And if you choose alcohol, then you need to try their margaritas! Been here for only 2 weeks and have already been here twice!

    (5)
  • Lucy K.

The food was fantastic and the service was excellent. We had delicious enchiladas, and as visitors to the area from New York it was the best Mexican food we've had anywhere in quite a while.

    (5)
  • Alicia R.

Stopped here in our way through Alamosa because of all the positive reviews. We opted for the buffet and were not impressed. The tamales and sopapillas were pretty good but that was about it. Definitely do as other reviewers suggested and order off the menu. The service was excellent but the booths ,walls and floors were all sticky and gross. We will not stop here again.

    (2)
  • Brandon H.

We had the buffet for $11/each. Nothing great but plenty of options. I believe that ordering from the menu would have been much better. Great live music being played while eating. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Food was just so-so. I would like to go back and try ordering an entree, probably would be better.

    (3)
  • Jen E.

I would not recommend this restaurant. For starters it's a Mexican buffet and the food was not very good. I feel like most Mexican food is pretty good but this was lacking in many ways. The service was average at best and the atmosphere was not that great either. It is located in the small town of Alamosa so there is not a lot to choose from. They offered a salad bar and fruit bar. There was a few desserts to choose from as well. I thought their sopapillas were the best item they served. I also got a margarita and it was not very good. We were with a pretty big group and overall everyone felt like it was lacking.

  • Elizabeth B.

One of the best Mexican food places I've ever eaten at, and living in San Antonio, that's saying a lot! It had a really great, family run feel.

  • Ilena M.

This place is awesome. Stopped in with my girlfriends whilst on a mini road trip from Denver. The staff is so nice, we were greeted with smiles and handshakes (which was a bit surprising to us!). They were very informative and friendly. You can opt for the buffet or order from their menu. We chose the latter and I must say we were quite satisfied. The portions were large and worth the price. Their food was delectable, some of the best pasole I had in a while! The best part was the full bar!! In a town where nothing is open on a Sunday we were lucky to find such a gem. I would definitely stop in again!!

  • Raabz B.

Very yummy food. One of the best Mexican restaurants I've ever eaten at. The only reason I give them 4 stars is because the service can be slow sometimes, but that's usually because the place is super busy always. But it's not a big deal, all the waiters are super nice and do try their best to be attentive. The buffet is delicious. Lots of different choices. The chef is really nice he's always ready to explain what the different dishes are. The Mexican bread with honey is super delicious. Do try that when you go!

I thought I knew Mexican food... I thought there is no way to get good Mexican food in Colorado... I thought I was getting setup for disappointment... I WAS DEFINITELY WRONG! Calvillo's offers a large buffet but I honestly couldn't tell what a lot of the food was so I opted for a menu item and settled on the chicken LVS Enchiladas with red sauce, potatoes, and rice. The dish was very tasty and much better than I had expected (despite the excellent reviews from fellow Yelpers). As it turns out, Calvillo's is largely Guatemalan (not Mexican but couldn't tell you the difference) food. I asked the server about where he's from because his accent didn't match the Mexican American accent I'm accustomed to down in Texas; he was genuinely thankful for the interest and told me about moving from Guatemala City 18 years ago. I learned a little about the culture down there while enjoying a great meal. He even offered us a sample of rice milk concoction which is a popular side in Guatemala. The sixth star (if possible on yelp) was earned when he walked up to our large group as we were leaving and shook our hand, thanked us for the visit, and wished us safe travels as we continued down the road. Every aspect of the service was top notch from an unassuming restaurant on Main Street -- would definitely recommend the stop.

Outstanding!! Free sopopillas at the end of an already fabulous meal. Are you kidding me!! Best Mexican I've had all year. And we like Mexican.

Great food, the burrito was delicious and so were fajitas. The mojitos were bomb. And the owner and all his staff made it a great dining experience, I will be back next time I make my way to alamosa.

Food was great, fresh and lots of it. The buffet was wonderful and reasonably priced. The homemade tortillas were excellent!!

I've been meaning to write this review for some time. This place has a prince of an owner. We came here last summer desperately hungry. My girlfriend is a vegetarian and they offered to make her special dishes. All of them were outstanding. Rarely have I ever felt so welcome- it was as if we had come to the proprietor's own home. Come here and you won't regret it.

$9.95 per person lunch buffet featuring authentic tasty Posole, tamales, chili relennos, chicharones and a dozen other items served with selection of 6 salsas. Fast and friendly service!

    (4)
  • Oskar H.

Probably the best Mexican (and other S of the border) food in Alamosa, and that's saying a lot because there are half a dozen Mexican restaurants. The menu is large and varied, with many items that you don't find other places. The buffet is also very good, with a lot of variety, though in terms of presentation there's room for improvement; the steam tables give some dishes a glazed-over look. Service was great: attentive and friendly. The owner stopped by our table twice, and talked to us on the way out as ell.

  • Dante V.

GREAT FOOD! This is a great place to eat after a tiring day at the dunes. The service was good and the atmosphere was ok.

All I can say is "So much food , So little stomach" . The food here is outstanding, let me repeat that The food here is outstanding. If you love Mexican food don't miss this place.

  • Jenn B.

Wow, completely blown away by amazing food, kind staff and fun atmosphere! I honestly had a sinking feeling when I saw the buffet setup, however my prejudice was unfounded. The servers and bartenders were helpful in answering questions and made us custom Prickly Pear Margaritas on the spot from fresh fruit. Yum! The food was fresh and flavorful, I particularly enjoyed the Chile Rellenos, my boyfriend had dessert and said the churros and so-papilla were tasty as well. The food was awesome, the best part was the bartender and host-owner coming over to chat with us, asking how our drinks were and inviting us to return. Def bookmarking this spot for future Colorado trips :)

  • Branden L.

Came in after just finishing a multiday backpacking trip so we made the mistake of going for the buffet. Overall it really wasn't very good. There were a couple of items that were decent like the enchiladas and the deserts. I'm giving it 3 stars because of the service. The owner/manager greeted us when we walked in and shock all of our hands and welcomed us very genuinely. Our waitress was also very attentive and nice.

I have no words to describe Calvillo's. This must be the very BEST Mexican food I've ever eaten!! I found this place thru Yelp and the other reviewers mentioned it has a buffet. I've never seen a Mexican buffet so I was rather dubious. We are Mexican food junkies, but only for authentic Mexican. We live down South and have to drive an hour and a half to get real, quality Mexican. So, with that said - I can said with no reservation that, this is the best I've EVER had. We regularly vacation in Mexico so I know good, authentic Mexican food. The tamales were the best all time and the, sopapillas were crunchy and delicious. Don't miss this place if you're in Alamosa. And, take a chance on the buffet - You won't be sorry!

This place was pretty darn good! Mexican buffet was fabulous. Def. recommend it to anyone. Staff was super friendly also!

  • Mindy H.

I was in town for two days and wanted some authentic Mexican food. Came here for brunch and had a smothered breakfast burrito. I was very excited for the green chili, however, it did not satisfy my taste buds . Will try another Mexican restaurant when I'm in town again.

    (3)
  • Elizabeth O.

Just ok. We got the lunch buffet for 9.95. Would not be a place we try again, without trying other places first.

This place was not very good. I ordered a tostada salad and it was tiny. I would not go back.

  • Ed F.

The reviews for this place are spot on. Food, service and location are great! Ordered the buffet and the place let me place a personal item on the house! Got the second margarita half price! Def will be back soon.

  • Susan M.

I was not all that hungry, so I thought I'd order from the menu. As others have mentioned, the buffet is only a couple more dollars than the menu. Think the buffet was 11.00, and most of the entrées on the menu were from 8.99 up. They had all-you-can-eat peel and eat shrimp, and a plethora of Mexican food. The enchiladas were some of the best I've had. as were the tamales. The burritos and tacos were also very good. Everything was very good to excellent. The Next time I am in town, I will definitely stop here again.

  • Tony K.

We met a family riding the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad down in Antonito and they said we have to come here. We arrived too early for the Buffet so we ordered Breakfast. We both thought it was pretty good . Prompt friendly service is always nice too ! If passing thru I would stage a attack on their Buffet !

  • Tony S.

Another excellent meal at Calvillo's! My partner got the buffet (as usual), with a great selection of main dishes. For dessert, she especially LOVED the Tres Leche Cake & Flan, which were both top notch. I opted to order off the regular menu and chose the Grande Combination Plate. The Enchilada with Ranchero Sauce was delish! The Tamale & Chili Relleno were also very good. Heck, even the Mexican Rice was stellar. Our server, Melissa, was totally on the ball throughout the meal, and brought us extra salsa, red chili & tortillas to compliment our dishes. The watermelon juice was awesome as always. She also gave us a taste of the pomegranate juice, which I might order next time. A great meal & experience! We highly recommend Calvillo's. Don't miss this place!

  • Skylor R.

I stopped here for lunch on my way to Denver. It looked decent and after looking at the reviews I thought it was a good option. I was wrong. Fast food would have been a better option. If you are driving by and need to stop for a place to eat, don't stop here. It looks like it is a great place for locals to get their fix of Mexican food. Compared to Mexican restaurants in bigger cities, it is a little lackluster.

    (1)
  • John Q.

Went here for lunch and I wish I hadn't. Very bland, questionable offerings on the buffet line, even the Diet Coke tasted off. Will not be returning.

    (1)
  • Linda O.

We had The buffet. The food was varied and fresh.I love that you could choose from a number of different interesting salsas. There were a number of pork dishes, several fish dishes, and beef tacos. The green chili was delicious. The staff was very welcoming and gracious, and there was live music, which was very good. Oh, and the desserts were very nice - a number of different cookies and sweet pastries. Everyone left very happy. Much, much, much better than Oscars right next-door.

  • Suzanne D.

Went for lunch with a party of 12. Buffet was good. Some ordered off of the menu. The burritos off of the menu were huge and looked yummy. Buffet had a good variety. Food was fresh and when it ran out they made more quickly. Price was not terrible.

    (4)
  • Kristi W.

The food is terrible, bland and sitting under heat lamps waiting to be dumped onto your plate. I know what you're thinking. The reviews are a bit of a mix and this one seems harsh. You really want to try something local rather than go to the Chilli's or Wendy's. Trust me, I thought the same thing. What you'll find when you come to Calvillo's: yellow cheese white people buffet Need I say more?

    (1)
  • Elizabeth E.

Hands down the best food & service in the whole Valley. After all these years, they never disappoint. No matter how busy they are you get the same great attention every time. The food is fresh, constantly turned over on the buffet & brought out to you quickly if you order from the menu. They never let your drink go dry & they are as genuine as can be.

We went to this restaurant based on the reviews we read and we're expecting really tasty Mexican food, however we found it to be on the spectrum of poor and we are fans of Mexican food, in fact we eat primarily Mexican cuisine throughout the Southwest and Mexico. I ordered Carne Asada tacos soft , the vinegary taste was overpowering, the plate was so hot I could not pick up The tortillas and eat them, I had to pull them off the plate to cool, we are talking soft tacos not fried shells! the accompanying beans and rice were tasteless. The radish was not sliced atop the tacos, but cut as a flower garnish, no cabbage and wilted cilantro. My daughters Carnitas tacos were dry and fatty, not juicy and flavorful as only carnitas can be, they to had the same pitiful taste as mine. My husbands Carne Adovado burrito was mediocre and tasteless, really? tasteless red chili! My silver margarita was sweet and from a mix, and no tequila taste at all! Grant you we ordered off the menu and did not partake in the buffet, all you can eat. May have been a off night. When we arrived we were immediately givenA booth and our drink order was taken. Promptly the drinks and chips and salsa arrived, 15 minutes later more chips arrived, 15 minutes after that our entrées finally arrived. This was not the fresh and tasty Mexican food we were expecting based on previous reviews.

Can you say wow? You know how you eat in a mex restaurant and spend 15 bucks and it's so so, but you still have food envy of all those around you? Well this is the opposite of that. We walked in and the owner said, it is like you are at your house, okay? Okay! For 11 dollars you get everything at the buffet and a drink! Yes. It is true. Fajitas, chile rellenos, carnitas, sopapilla, flan... It goes on. And it's all very good, freshly made, traditional dishes you might not try otherwise. It would be a great deal if it was so so food, but the food is amazing! Thy even had a tortilla lady making fresh tortillas! Es verdad! Skip the salad, go for the gusto. Don't plan on eating before or after. It's like Vegas, but family friendly! Vive calvillos!

  • Sulema M.

Great place, pretty good food, friendly people. We opted for the buffet and I was able to sample quite a few items given I am picky about my Mexican food. I had bean, rice, potatoes, two different types of red chile, a chile relleno and pork chops, homemade tortilla and a sopapilla......Folllllllowed by flan, sweet tamale, and fruit. Not too bad. I didn't pile it high, just wanted to sample everything that looked yummy. I wasn't disappointed at all. Many food options to choose from, all looks fresh and the stations were clean. Quick service and quite nice too.

I would definitely not recommend this place!! The employees are treated horribly by the so-called management! I also found a cockroach crawling around the buffet! Disgusting! Do not eat at Calvillos!!

    (1)
  • Becky R.

STOP here! Excellent mexican food. Get the buffet so you can taste everything on the menu, but take very small portions or you won't taste it all. Extensive salad, dessert and food bars. Hand made tortillas as you wait. Very attentive wait staff. Green chili is wonderful. This is my new favorite Mexican place. Best in Colorado or New Mexico!

I have never seen a Mexican buffet before, and truthfully the only reason I went here was because I read reviews on Yelp. Our waiter Jesus was very helpful, walked us through the buffet. Explained that if there was anything that we wanted, they'd make it for us. So we went with the buffet and although I'm not a huge fan of real Mexican food, what I tried was good. Sometimes it was a complete guess with what the food was though.

My first review. Excellent food and service. Loved the buffet. Many foods I did not recognize, tried them and was very pleased. We'll definitely put it on our 'come back to' list.

We stayed in Alamosa on Friday night and were very happy with our meal at Calvillo's. They have very authentic Mexican food, including homemade chicharrones, tamales, chicken mole, and Chile Rellenos. In addition, they hand make their tortillas and sopapillas. After traveling all day, we were happy to find this gem. We will be back.

Came here on the recommendation of the gas station attendant. Good food, good service, clean, would come back again. They also offer a lunch buffet and several locals were eating (always a good sign in my book).

This was my first Mexican buffet I've ever been to. This was a seriously huge Mexican buffet as well. Calvillo's was recommended to us while traveling through SouthWestern Colorado by a local shop owner. We ate a late lunch and thought an "all you can eat" style recommendation would be a terribly GOOD idea for lunch. Salads, rice, beans, ribs, sides, desserts, ice cream and much more. On top of that, the kitchen is open and the cook twice asked if he could relate any special requests I'd like. So, this is an all you can eat PLUS anything else you can want restaurant. Go with an extremely large appetite.

There is certainly a diverse array of food on the buffet, and the price is definitely right (about $11 per person, drink included.) I tried my first Chicharrones! Not gonna lie, there's something that can only be described as decadent as crunching on FRIED PORK FAT. It was an experience. The quality of the Buffet food was good, but the offerings coming from the kitchen definitely looked better. For some reason, though, the waiters and host all actively discouraged us from ordering off the menu. The pressure toward the Buffet was kind of crazy. I mean... if you want people to eat the Buffet, then stop offering the menu! That being said, the host-guy was REALLY friendly to everyone. There were ample choices, the quality was good, and apparently they'll make stuff a'la carte for you at no extra charge. Also, two words: Flan. TresLeches. That is all.

My trip to Calvillo's comes with a story that doesn't really belong in the scope of this Yelp review. Suffice it to say, we had had a hard time at Great Sand Dunes, it was very late, and we were very hungry. Thank God I had programmed Calvillo's address into the GPS. It was literally the first restaurant we came across driving from Great Sand Dunes. The staff of Calvillo's witnessed our sand-crusted appearances and immediately took pity, offering margaritas and fresh tortilla chips and salsa (fresh tortilla chips make all the difference, by the way). As the tequila flowed, our sandstorm-beating began to ease into a bad memory. As it was so late, we didn't partake of the buffet (anything sitting on a buffet for that long is a bad idea, IMO), but the tacos and green chile enchiladas we ordered were plentiful, tasty, extremely appreciated, and dirt cheap. We left our plates clean and were recharged to continue our journey. Calvillo's, thank you for the rescue and for not commenting on the trails of sand we left in our wake. Later in our trip we came to appreciate your tastiness and value compared to other Mexican restaurants in Colorado.

So my food was okay, a 6/10. The rest in my party were less enthusiastic. However, the service was simply terrible. Long waits, very unfriendly. But the main reason this got a terrible rating was that three out of the five in our group got really nasty food poisoning that lasted several days. My son had a fever of 104. No one else got sick, just the three of us who had the verde sauce. It's not always easy to pinpoint food poisoning, but we had plenty of time to deduce the culprit, and it simply had to be the Calvillo's verde sauce. Thanks a lot for ruining our vacation.

FAN-BLOODY-TASTIC. It's rare to find a buffet with fresh, incredible food, but when they're done right they make me absolutely giddy with happiness. This is about as perfect as it gets, with a huge variety of excellent foods and desserts. Won't go into detail with so many reviews below, but seriously - treat yourself to utter smorgasbord ridiculousness at this place. It gets one of my few absolute raving reviews.

My bosses took me here for my birthday; they insisted I HAD to go to Cavillo's before I left ASC and Alamosa. To date, I'd say this is the best food I've had in Alamosa yet. Absolutely fantastic. As others noted, the male host was extremely personable and friendly, and our waiter was great--we even had a woman who wasn't even working our table and was working another section come and refill our drinks without us asking. The buffet was fantastic. Sure there wasn't a whole ton to choose from (and why they had fajita filling w/o soft shell tortillas is beyond me) but the food was GREAT. Unlike most ethnic buffet places that only wind up serving a bunch of cheap, fried food, this stuff was, well, legit, and actually MEXICAN. It tasted fantastic and fresh. Buffet-only places like Golden Corral aside, this was probably the best buffet I've ever had. A+! Fresh, authentic, and delicious. Clean restaurant, quiet-but-not-uptight atmosphere, and good prices. Definitely would recommend. Probably the best food in Alamosa! Oh, and if you go there for your birthday, be prepared for the chocolate-syrup-on-the-nose treatment, haha.

I had already read about Calvillo's buffet but would avoid it as I usually do with buffets. However, as we walked in our waiter gave us a tour of the buffet offerings and then stated that it was only $9.95. Oh what the hell, it was so bountiful and good looking and offering pretty much what I thought I would be ordering that we decided to see what everyone was talking about. I built a great fajita salad with a sampling of every sauce available and The husband amazed me with the number of trips he took. Everything was great tasting and so fresh. The cook does stand in the back and cooks up a fresh batch of whatever is needed. After the meal, we were then given a little tour of the desert samplings including THE BEST TRES LECHES cake. Oh yes, and as we walked to our table the first time, the bartender said he would make us the best margarita or sangria in the Valley. He did!

Mexican buffet? I had never heard experienced a Mexican buffet; however, I tend to avoid buffets like the plague anyway. We were in Alamosa this past weekend and had drinks with friends at Calvillo's. What a great place, with friendly service. Our friends are locals and were greeted by the owners, bartenders and wait staff. We knew we were at the right place. Due to eating a late lunch, we weren't much in the mood for food, but my friend's wife was told that Tuaca was in stock that day. I decided to try the Tuaca and Coke, which was served with lime wedges and cherries. Yum! After 3 of them, I had to stop drinking and just have water. I did order from the appetizer menu, just a simple order of mini taquitos, which were quite tasty. My bf ended up getting a plate from the buffett and our friends also ordered food, after we'd been there for 3 hours. We definitely enjoyed ourselves and if we're in Alamosa again (which I hope that we are), we will eat & drink here again. Yum.

OK Me and my hubby were split on this place. He LOVED it and chowed down on the Mexican buffet. I on the other hand was not so enthused. I only marginally like buffets and this one baffled me. I was not sure what everything was. They really should mark each buffet item with a label of what it is. That being said. I LOVED the tamales(I recognized those!) But thought some of the items were strange..(spaghetti?Mexican?). So give it a whirl but if you aren't super hungry then order from the menu (buffet is $11-I ate 2 tamales and an enchilada?). Also, the tortilla station was unmanned. I am sure I would have been enchanted with just pressed yummy hot tortillas.

So, I agree with Kristi W...the food is not great. While there are "authentic" Mexican dishes, it is not really tasty. I love chicharrones, but these ones were somewhat stale. Even the tortilla chips (not authentic, but a mainstay of Tex-Mex places and hard to mess up) tasted like they had been fried in stale oil. Tortillas also tasted stale, beans were not flavorful and tasted just like out a can. I ended up having some steamed vegetables that were OK, some bland rice, and ice cream for $12 from the buffet. Really meh. Most people get the buffet because the menu items are more expensive...I think a quesadilla was about $15.

I loved Cavillo's. I ordered the buffet and was pleased with the food. I am very picky about Mexican food and Cavillo's satisfied my taste buds. If you know your Mexican food, you could navigate around the buffet just fine. The item Michele V. saw and thought was spaghetti was probably fideo, a Mexican type of spaghetti that tastes very different from regular spaghetti. (So... not so strange :) I thought the staff was very friendly and was attentive to our table. I loved Calvillo's so much, I wish there was one in Denver.

Oh my goodness this place is wonderful! The buffet is tremendous and you can get anything imagineable that is Mexican if you opt for it ($11.00/adult on Sunday, $4.50 for children under 12). You name it, this buffet has it (sopapillas, made-to-order quesadillas, green/red chili, burritos, tacos, various fruits, pasta salads, ceviche, shrimp, taquitos, homemade tortillas, mole, BBQ ribs, ack! I can't do it justice. It's like going to an authentic Mexican restaurant on a very grand scale. Did I mention the ice cream and homemade Mexican desserts? Bread pudding, flan, pastries... From the minute we walked in the door everyone working there was so friendly! The host who seated us, the cook, the tortilla maker, our server - everyone. There were mariachi musicians strolling the restaurant aisles and don't let me forget to mention the outrageously yummy premium margaritas (2 for $10). This is a 3-hour drive from my place in Colorado Springs but I would truly make that drive just to eat at Calvillo's and enjoy the buffet again! Great place to take your kids too.

Buffet $9.99 lunch. Includes drink. Homemade corn and flour tortilla. Best 3 milk cake we have ever had.

It's pathetic how bad the Mexican food is living in Denver (and Colorado in general), so I was happily surprised at my experience eating at Calvillo's, especially since it's a buffet. Everything I tried WAS buffet food, prepared for a crowd (rather than to order), but it didn't feel that way. From the tamale to the excellent array of salsas, I wish I had a bigger appetite, it was all so good. The staff was friendly and helpful, as I didn't recogize some of the dishes. The lunch price was completely affordable considering the amount and various types of offerings. All-in-all, the next time I'm in Alamosa, I will be visiting Calvillo's again!

-Very tasty food. I had flautas but my friend tried their dinner buffet and he enjoyed everything thoroughly. I'll just leave it at that. O, and they give you complimentary chips and salsa! Always a plus in my book. -Good prices. I can't remember what I p

Seems like a very popular place; it was hopping when we stopped by on our way to the sand dunes. This was the first time I've ever seen a Mexican buffet - interesting! The food was great; I love Mexican food and they were very generous with the sour cream, guacamole, and green chili - yum!!! Service was a bit slow but like I said, the place was packed, and it was just a normal non-holiday Wednesday evening. I would definitely eat here again!

I went to Calvillo's based on the reviews and the fact that they had a buffet. I was expecting greatness, and I was not disappointed. When you first get in there, it may seem like all they have to offer is an extensive salad bar, but don't be fooled. The good stuff is in the back, right next to the kitchen: meats, veggies, and different Mexican dishes (burritos, enchiladas, etc.), all for your consuming pleasure. They also have a taco makin' area, and a fabulous selection of desserts. The cooks behind the buffet were super friendly, offering to make us an order of nachos, which we were happy to accept... and I would highly recommend them. They also brought us regular chips with salsa, queso, AND guac. My favorite part of the meal were the sopapillas, which you could cover with as much sugar and honey as your pre-diabetic heart could wish for. One small hitch in my giddy-up (hence four stars and not five) was the margarita. I prefer mine sweet, and it was, but unfortunately, I thought it tasted watery. But definitely don't let that stop you from getting a great meal from great people at a great restaurant.

The food was "OK" it wasn't the best tasting mexican food ever, but I must admit their margaritas are bomb.com . Some of the food was bland, while some were overly salty. I know a lot of people talk about their tres leches cake, but was very disappointed when I tried it because it was hard and dry so perhaps it had been sitting out all day. The place, however, is very accommodating from the moment we stepped in to the buffet bar where the owner said, "anything you want we can make for you, let us know." FYI margaritas are $5.50 for the first one and half price for seconds, thirds, fourths....

Are here after a full day of hiking. Service was fantastic, we were greeted by three different people upon walking in. Asked for lots of water and were given our own pitcher. Massive buffet with lots of options, something for everyone, even fresh corn tortillas made right in front of our eyes. Left fully satisfied. Definitely give this place a shot.

If you are in Alamosa or the Valley, you MUST eat at Calvillos. I know the idea of a Mexican buffet is a little foreign, and I too was hesitant when my dad took me for the first time. I was completely blown away by the quality, authenticity, flavor and freshness of the food. This is a great local, authentic place. If they don't have it on the buffet, they will make it for you, if there isn't enough, they'll make a new batch. Incredible! The desserts are also to die for. I loved their tres leches cake and their coconut cookies (not sure of the name). Calvillos is my go-to place in the Valley.

We were looking for somewhere local for lunch on the way through town and stopped here based on the great reviews. We weren't disappointed! Great food and friendly staff. Only down side is I still have 200+ miles to drive until I get home and I've got a belly full of great food! Will stop here again on my next trip through town!!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
