We went to this place because of recommendation of friend's friend. Considering our lack of experiences in Indonesian food, we took the owner's recommendations and ordered few dishes. The food was surprisingly good.

This has been my only experience with Indonesian food and it's definitely a good one. I passed by this place and saw the pictures of their dishes displayed outside their establishment and I was intrigued enough to try it. From the looks of the place, I believe it's family owned and has that home-style feel to it. The lady that helped me decide what was good to try on the menu was very friendly and patient with my Indo food virgin self. At the end I ended up ordering the satay chicken and some noodle dish that I can't remember the name of. Great choices though and big portions...I enjoyed my delicious meal and was equally pleased with the cheap bill I got.

As good as it gets, I love their food. The owner is very friendly and helpful. The food is on time and tastes yummy! My opinion is this restaurant is far better than most Asian restaurants and a must try. Don't pass up the chance to eat here. You won't regret it instead you will remember it.

I have never had Indonesian food so when I went there with my coworkers we asked for a ton of recommendations from the owner. He practically ordered everything for us and was patient enough to explain what each dish consisted of. All were very enjoyable and quite delicious. If you have never tried Indonesian food, this is a great place to start.

by far, one of the best Indonesian restaurants in the SGV. food is fresh, authentic, and well seasoned! maaaan. whenever i can't get my mom's nasi goreng or sate kambing, i'll go here!! excellent service with GREAT sized portions! love this place.

AH I'm SO SORRY! I don't remember what I ordered but everything was amazing!! One thing I remember was something wrapped in banana leaves. OMG so good!! Asked the owner and he suggested like 4 dishes. PARTY IN MY MOUTH. everything was amazing. The atmosphere was eh~ but the food and price def make up for it.

I always have a soft spot for authentic foods. I'm also Indonesian, so I enjoy a taste of home, wherever I go.

I 'dined' with my niece and her Indonesian husband. It was very convenient because we live in Walnut. I was extremely disappointed; the beef satay should have been called gristle satay, the chicken curry made up in bones what it lacked in flavor. The lamb curry was fairly tasty. The Simpang Asia on National is an infinitely better Indonesian restaurant. However, since there were so many glowing reviews on this site, I suppose it would be fair to give it another try sometime (when I'm really hungry).

This place is AMAZING, the owner was very nice and considerate. Their service maybe a little slow but this clearly states that it's family own, so great food in return for somewhat slow service. Either way their fried rice is an amazing specialty. The lamb satay was tender and juicy and their potato balls were exceptional. Even though this place should find a better location, where it can be clearly seen, this place is an amazing secret little gem of Walnut. Definitely will recommend others to come.

Discusting! The restaurant is very dirty and their food is just not good at all! Dont bother coming waste of my money.

This place opened up my palate to more than just the usual Asian food, this was authentic and just plain great eatery in the area. It's different from the rest and is up there when I want some good Indonesian food.

Nasi bungkus, Sate ayam, sate sapi, Udang Belado, soto betawi is the best.

Seriously good food for cheap. I got a fried rice dish filled with strange delicious things, which is good. It also had fried onions, which kinda get stuck in your teeth, but it contributed positively to the flavor. I dunno why everything "normal" to me (like Chinese and American food) is bland as hell. compared to this, but it's a good palate exercise. Can't hit the gym for that muscle! The rice dish can easily feed 1.7 people (2 people to 85% fullness). The ingredients may bore you, but the actual execution of the fried rice is grand.

I love how much this place reminds me of the food in Malaysia. It almost reminds me of home-cooked food. Absolutely love how friendly the owners are. Love the Cha Kangkung and their Nasi Goreng!

I literally come here only for the Indonesian fried rice. And maybe the sate, but mainly for the Indonesian fried rice. This place is a mom-and-pop restaurant. I think the husband is the waiter/server and the wife cooks in the kitchen. The decor is a bit outdated, but I don't think the atmosphere is what you should be looking for when you come here. The fried rice is seriously some the tastiest fried rice I've ever had. There's none of that bland, white, crap sprinkled with peas and carrots that's served at Chinese restaurants. The fried rice here is dark brown, oily, spicy, and packed with flavor! The meat served in it is superb as well - the shrimp, chicken, and pork are all good. It's also topped with an egg, which is basically a plus to any dish. Also, I think 2 people can share this dish and get fairly full because portions be huge. My family is also a pretty big fan of the pork and chicken sate here. It's really tasty with the peanut dipping sauce, and the meat is juicy. I tend to go for the chicken because it's healthier, but the pork definitely tastes better IF you don't mind consuming all that fat. Cons, it doesn't come with rice so it'll cost extra if you order it, which I still advise. I've tried other things on the menu, which I didn't care for. Maybe I'm just not a fan of Indonesian food...I tend to not care for foods that are sweet & spicy, which they have a lot of. But the fried rice and sate still warrant 5 stars from me.

This was my first time eating Indonesian food I went to this part of Los Angeles because I had a day off from work so I wanted to hang out with my friends who lives here. Also, I wanted to try Indonesian food. I've always wanted to try it but unfortunately, San Diego has no Indonesian restaurants. I've had this place bookmarked for a while and now I finally had the opportunity to go here This restaurant is a little tricky to find but once you find it, you're in for a treat. Looking at the entrance and the menu, it made me believe that this is run by Chinese Indonesians. The entrance has Chinese characters and in the menu, I noticed that they serve pork. For those who aren't aware, Indonesia has the world's largest Muslim population and Muslims are not allowed to eat pork. Most Chinese Indonesians are not Muslims and Chinese cuisine has many pork dishes (Cha siu bao being one of my favorites). Anyways, to stay on topic, I ordered "Nasi Goreng" which literally translates to "fried rice" in Indonesian. Some people consider it Indonesia's "national dish." It tasted incredible. It reminds me of that Korean dish "kimchi bokkeumbap" or better known as "kimchi fried rice" just without the spam. The dish made me feel full and satisfied. It actually lasted all day which means, portion size here is awesome considering the price (it's less than ten dollars). This restaurant is awesome. Next time I'm in the area, I'll be back here to try the other dishes they serve

Hands down, the hardest place to get food from. Maybe it's me, but it seems that every time I want to get food from this place, they are always closed. Monday, Tuesday, After 8, after 9 on weekends. Man, I can't work with those hours. I'm always tryna go on a Tuesday or 8:15 on a Wednesday. WTF right? But I was lucky enough to have eaten here twice. That's 2 out of like 15 attempts. And luckily this place has bomb food. +Lamb satay After reading a few people of my yelp friends reviews, had to try the Lamb satay, 'cause I love lamb. Dare I say the best dang lamb satay ever? Maybe because I've never previous had satay lamb heh. +Indonesian fried rice There are so many variations! And of course you gotta order the fried rice. This is my favorite rice dish at those Hong Kong Cafes, and the real deal is even better. Spicy, savory, and that fried egg on top. This dish KILLS it for me. Definitely worth coming for if you aren't on a carb free diet. +Other dishes I've tried were chicken satay, fried fish filet, and the Kroket. The chicken had delicious charred notes that you would find anywhere else around town, fried fish was nice and crispy, paired very well with an aromatic spicy sauce, and the kroket is a very hearty fried ball of mashed potato and meat stuffing. Imagine shepherds pie, covered with panko and deep fried, it's great. +Sweets While looking at the drink menu, you have no idea what the drink might taste like, here's a tip, just roll those dice. Chances are in your favor. Most drinks are very good if you don't mind coconut. Service is superb, the uncle in the front is very kind and considerate. The auntie in the back really makes you feel at home. When you are in the 626 East, look at the time, if you are lucky enough, you might just be able to have a taste at this hidden gem of Indonesian cuisine.

Good foods!! Lamb satay (sate kambing), gado-gado (indonesian salad), and Tendon Soup (sop kikil), are really good! Definetely will come back again

I was happy to find this place! We ordered the coconut fish, shrimp nasi goreng and another dish that was like gado gado but with noodles. I forgot the name but it had peanut sauce and was so good! Everything was flavorful. They take cash only. I can't wait to try their chicken and beef satay next time!

Never knew Indonesian food tastes this good. Owner is super nice. Food is so yummy. What else can you ask for? Pork sate is our favorite. It has the right amount of fat. Melts in your mouth! Stir fried fish and tofu is my mom's favorite (and everyone's). Stif fried Kong Shing vegetables with some kind of fish ot shrimp sause is great too! Love great food!

  • Christina C.

For some reason, my first visit here was way better than the second. We didn't order sate at all on our second visit and that might've been the problem. We wanted to try new things on the menu and they just didn't live up to our expectations. You get your money's worth for the amount of food you're getting though. If you're unsure about a dish, I would ask them about it so you know exactly what you're getting.

  • Yosi S.

First time trying this place. Gotta say I was skeptical at first. I ordered sate kambing, gado-gado, and Sop kikil. They were really good, reminded me when I was eating in Indonesia. I would come back for sure and will try the sate babi next time. Friendly staff and clean restroom. The place prolly need a little decorations or design but don't worry... The food will make you forget the tacky wall painting, lol.

  • Anthony C.

Upon entering the place, I thought the dining area kinda smelled like soap.... Maybe it was the smell of the bathrooms creeping out (there's not really a hallway between the bathroom and dining room). The food wasn't bad. I had the crispy shrimp with some sweet sauce. Also had the famous fried rice and pork satay. All of them were pretty good; but nothing super spectacular. Portions were pretty decent, but I can't say that the experience was super memorable. Prices are about $10 per plate.

First time here. Been wanting to try it from all of the yelp reviews. As far as Indonesian food goes, this place is really good. I got the fried rice with egg on top and the pork satay because that's what all the yelp pictures were of. They were both very good. Make sure you let them add the spiciness to the fried rice, it makes it much much better. They have a home made chili paste on the table. Try it, its so good. Would come back again for sure!

My first experience with Indonesian food and I wasn't disappointed. I came with my cousin for dinner and the place wasn't too crowded. It is a family owned restaurant so I was already excited. Family owned is the best! Support them!! We got seated and we ordered the Fried Rice and the Pork Satay. Both dishes were really good and portions are generous. I freaking looooove the peanut sauce (or whatever that is) on the satay. So delicious I could eat with with anything and it would taste amazing!!!

Wandered in here after running some errands in West Covina (no fear of eating alone!!!!) and YUM. I want to go back already. It's hidden in a small little plaza and the restaurant interior seems a bit musty.......... but you know what I say... I don't care how dirty the restaurant is as long as the food is good!! I walked in already knowing that i wanted the LAMB SATAY (lamb slut forever) and asked the little auntie taking my order whether the KROKET (3 pieces) or the RESOLE (2 pieces) was better. She said "They both same inside, one potato, one flour" and after sensing my indecisiveness, "I let you try both so you don't have to choose!" At this point, I already knew I was going to love this place hehe FOOD: +++LAMB SATAY: ugh ugh so good. TENDER, JUICY pieces of lamb grilled in a nice SWEET sauce and accompanied by peanut sauce. mmhmmm. The meat was pretty fatty but that's the way uh huh uh huh i like it~ +++RESOLE: I preferred this to the kroket. It's a savory mixture (chicken? potato? don't care, it's good) wrapped like an eggroll, covered in bread crumbs and deep fried. But unlike the eggroll, the skin is not crispy. The bread crumbs give the Resole an amazing crunch but the wrapper is still nice and soft. +++kroket: I enjoyed this as well, but not as much as the resole since I felt that it was much heavier (judging by the fact that I ate the entire resole but left a quarter of the kroket untouched...). It's the same savory filling as the resole but covered with potato! Definitely going to come back and explore more Indonesian food! I'm a fan, yayyyy~ TIP: their hot sauce is SPICY! Mix it up with sweet and sour sauce that comes with the resole/ kroket and then it becomes the perfect way to give your food that extra kick! AND CASH ONLYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!

A friend of a friend recommended this place. I was curious since I had never tried Indonesian food before. It's a small restaurant that isn't correctly placed in Google Maps, so it's a bit hard to find. We orded the Nasi Goreng (medium spice), chicken sate, and their special over the weekend. I'm not sure what it's called but it was a mixture of beef, chicken, green beans, rice, and glass noodles wrapped in a banana leaf. I thought the Nasi Goreng was pretty yummy. The chicken sate was surprisingly tender and their peanut sauce is good. I didn't really care for their special too much. My friend and husband weren't very impressed with the food...but I liked it. I will say that it isn't something I would ever crave for though, so I'm not sure I'd be back. Service was terrible. The waitresses never checked up on us, never refilled our waters, and after asking for the check multiple times, my husband finally stood next to the cash register until someone actually handed him the check (which was just sitting next to the register).

Talk about a hole in a wall place. It's already hard enough to find Indonesian restaurant in California and you definitely can't find this place unless another person mentioned this place to you. I tried their nasi padang as my base for all Indonesian restaurants because if you can't make this properly, there's no way people will come back here. The verdict is amazing!! The portion is very good only if you are hungry; other than that it's a bit on the large side. The sate is also really good and the sauce is sweet and delicious. The owner is super friendly and he will sometimes make suggestions for you. LISTEN TO HIM. Come with your family and if possible someone Indonesian because he'll be extra friendly.

Ok so right off the bat, I have to tell you I was very hesitant to come here because of how far away this place is from the nearest freeway but it ended up being very worth it. It short summary, the owner and staff are very friendly and hospitable as well as the food tasted amazing. You should know that they are cash only. I was a little surprised but luckily I brought enough. Most popular item for my group was their sweet and sour fried chicken. I'm more of a curry kind of guy so I recommend that too. Their fried rice was good. My friend order the chicken satay and I thought that it was alright. Small friendly place but it is totally worth going just for the flavor.

Sate House is definitely a pleasant surprise! I have been here a few times now, and every time, I forget what to order and ask the owner for help. The owner is this jovial Indonesian-Chinese man who loves to laugh and banter. Usually as I sit there on my phone frantically browsing yelp reviews trying to figure out which goreng thing I ordered last time, he will come up and ask if he can help us by making suggestions. Each time, his suggestions are perfect and estimation of portion size is right on the money. I love good service above all and that is what I have consistently found to be a plus at Sate House. Of course, the food has to be good too, and it definitely is here. Flavors are good - I've tried the chicken and pork sate, both are excellent. Curry here is also good, as well as the wrapped rice dish. Spices were interesting and playful, without being overpowering. Although the interior of the restaurant doesn't look like a michelin star restaurant, it's a hole in the wall, mom and pop shop so I forgive the restaurant for its vintage appearance. Will definitely keep coming back!

Came here again last week. So the resoles are equally as good as the kroquet/croquet (I don't recall the spelling). Tried the chicken and the beef satay. While the chicken was good, I preferred the beef. The iced coffee has good flavor and I'd get it again.

My first experience with Indo food and it did not disappoint!! We are talking major flavor town!! I came here with a bunch of friends in preparation for a trip to Bali, so we ordered a bunch of dishes and shared family style. The sate was excellent, especially the lamb which was juicy and well seasoned. The fish in curry sauce was delish. The nasi bungkus which is one of the most traditional dishes is a must!! It's a mix of rice, noodles, a multitude of well seasoned meats wrapped up in a banana leaf. We also had the fried chicken and calamari. I do not have one bad thing to say about this meal, but it is cash only so plan ahead for that. The staff were super friendly and I totally recommend checking this place out if you like good food and are looking for something new to try.

I had this bookmarked for the longest time and decided to try this today on a whim. I ordered the Nasi Goreng fried rice as what the other yelpers had suggested and It was pretty good! You can order it mild or spicy. I also had the chicken sate which is the bomb with the peanut sauce. We had the fish in coconut sauce which is also good but it was too spicy for me, but hubby was stuffing his face though so I guess it was good and not too spicy for him...

  • Danny N.

So goodddddddddddddd. I love their chicken sate! I thought it was going to be really dry but the chicken was so tender! I love the burnt tasted and the peanut sauce. Each sate order is about 8 dollars, and you get 6 skewers, not that bad! The place is hidden at the corner so you might miss it driving down Nogales, but they have their own little parking lot too! The service is really quick, we got our sate in less than 10 minutes!

I LOVE this restaurant. I've been to other Indonesian restaurants in LA and nothing even compares to this. The flavors are very distinct so you don't ever feel like you're eating Thai food (which often happens with other Indonesian restaurants). The owner is super friendly and attentive, great service overall. These are the dishes I get: 1) Indonesian fried rice Sooo good. If it's your first time here, I highly recommend it. 2) Sambel goreng udang Probably my favorite dish here. 3) Pork Satay Best satay I've ever had. 4) Ong Chou Very typical for this dish but still very good! Highly recommend this place. Amazing food. Reasonable prices. Great service.

For some reason, because of all the raving review and delicious looking food pics, I wasn't expecting the Sate House to be located in such a bum plaza. But anywhoooo..I'm definitely keeping this place bookmarked after my first visit :) The restaurant itself is sorta dingy and small...but that doesn't speak for the awesome food that is create in their kitchen! We ordered the Indonesian Fried Rice, Chicken Satay, and Kroket. The Kroket is basically a mashed potato ball stuffed with chicken and various veggies, which was pretty good. I also liked the Satay very much! You have the option of either doing 5 or 6 sticks, depending if you want rice with it or not. 5 sticks = you get rice. 6 sticks = you don't. The fried rice was bomb as well! Seasoned nicely and had a tomato-y flavor that was just really delish! Prices were pretty okay. $8 for the rice, $7 for the satay, and $3.99 for 2 huge Krokets. Like I said!....this isn't gonna be the last time this place sees me. :)

[[ Parking & Location ]]-- Like walking into your grandmother's house. Super small joint in an unassuming corner plaza. [[ Lamb Sate ]]-- BEST lamb skewers ever!! Made with a sweet tinge that'll linger on your back palette and you'll definitely enjoy the tenderness of the meat [[ Soup Buntut ]]-- aka Oxtail Soup. Plenty for 1 person so be happy to share. Comes with 3-4 pieces of oxtail and lots of veggies in your soup! [[ Ikan Goreng Balado ]]-- fried fish with some kind of awesome Indonesian sauce! We ordered it with medium spice. DELICIOUS sauce! The family that owns this restaurant is so kind and helpful. The menu is Indonesian with English descriptions but mostly we just ask the waiter for his recommendations. Never fails. We really appreciated him explaining the items and helping us to pick out our dishes every time! RECOMMENDED :) tip: CASH only

TWO WORDS... Nasi Goreng! The food here is delicious, only down side is that sometimes the spice level isn't the same. I always get my food medium, sometimes it's perfect, but usually either not spicy enough or too spicy.

My first impression was, "It's a hole in the wall Indonesian restaurant that doesn't get enough publicity for its delicious, authentic food." Tucked in the corner of a residential street in Walnut, you might miss this place if you're not looking among the plethora of Asian restaurants in the SGV area. Indonesian restaurants are hard to find, but lucky for me, we've got 3 of 'em so close to one another: Sate House, Java Spice, and Merry's House of Chicken. A short drive further and we have Toko Rame in Bellflower and Simpang Asia in LA. Can't get enough of this rich, spicy, flavorsome food. The culture and the food of Indonesia is so intriguing to me, and it is one of the most complex cuisines of the world. Here are some Indo food highlights, and my personal favorites: NASI BUNGKUS on the weekends: rice wrapped in banana leaf w/ curry chicken, beef rendang, balinese style egg, spiced potato, bits of chicken gizzard, and vegetable curry sauce. PEMPEK, MPEK MPEK, OR EMPEK-EMPEK can't forget this because of its name. Fishcake delicacy and street food made of fish and tapioca, fried with egg, and served in a sweet and sour sauce with noodles. Yum. SATE Must do the sate here, it's in the name! Charred to perfection served with peanut sauce, an Indo staple. NASI GORENG The warning is that it's really spicy, they really mean business. Medium spicy is usually my maximum level, and I still torture myself to eat this delicious fried rice, but then again, I'm not so good at eating spicy foods. The combination one with all the meats is the best. LEMPER A popular Indonesian snack made of sticky rice and chicken wrapped and steamed in a banana leaf. Love the service here, the owners are so friendly and they love people who are down to try their homemade Indonesian specialties! The lasting impression? "Once you try Indonesian food, you'll be hooked!"

My boyfriend wanted to show me the food of his people, so he decided to take me here. He was really excited to whip out his Indo speaking skills, but instead, the owner immediately approached me and decided to speak Mandarin to me. We got a good laugh out of that. Anyways, I have to say that the owner is really nice. I've only been here a couple of times, but he always strikes up pleasant conversations with me. These conversations make me feel like a regular and as if I've known him for a really long time. :) ++ WHAT TO ORDER (Portions for 2 people) #1 REGULAR SATE - PORK $7.50 / BEEF $8.00 / LAMB $8.25 Absolutely amazing! You can either get 6 pieces, or 5 pieces with rice or lontong. I usually go for the 6 pieces, because I can't pass up the extra meat and order a fried rice to accompany this. This is the BEST SATE I've ever had. Just thinking about it makes my mouth salivate .. The meat was so juicy and flavorful, and don't even get me started on that peanut sauce. That stuff is mind-blowingly good. You can pretty much dump that sauce on ANYTHING, and it'll work its magic. The difference about Indo sate sauce is that they add on this sweet, black sauce. Not really sure about how to describe the flavor of it in English, but trust me, this stuff may change your life. #47 NASI GORENG - literally translates into "Fried Rice" The owner told me that #47-5X were the most popular to pair with the sate. The flavoring is all the same; the only difference is the add-ons. I go with the simplest, #47 (chicken, pork, shrimp, and egg). I usually am not a big fan of fried rice, but I always enjoy Indo fried rice because of the kick of spice. My boyfriend said that the fried rice was pretty standard for Indonesian food, but it was the perfect thing to pair with the order of sate. Also, dumping that sauce from the sate on this is freaking good! ++ EXTRAS My boyfriend also ordered these fried potato balls for us to share. They were really fresh and savory. I liked them more than the ones I've had at Porto's :x Maybe because we got them as soon as they were out of the fryer :). I'm not sure what this was called, because my boyfriend ordered it in Indonesian. Boo, language barriers. Anyways, I'm planning on coming back to try other more traditional Indonesian dishes ^_^ yay.

This little restaurant is tucked away in the corner of its plaza. The man at the front, presumably the owner, was so sweet- he could tell I'm not Indonesian so he offered me help with the menu and spoke to me in Chinese just to make me feel more comfortable ( even though my Chinese isn't the best LOL). #47, the fried rice with 3 kinds of meat was a bit disappointing. It wasn't very flavorful and the egg was too fried. The pork sate, however, was amazing. Not dry at all. It also comes with a peanut sauce that I didn't really care for. As for those of you who love the croquettes, kindly take your asses to Portos. Enough said

Good food, but my con about this place is the random hours they close. I drive a long way to get here only to see it close more than twice way before closing hours. As always, there always never seem to be any beef for sate so I always end up with pork. Like come on, I have not tried the beef version at all since I first started coming here. If you decide to come here to eat in, make sure you call and reserve so you don't drive for nothing.

Two words: Chicken Satay! I don't know what their secret is but these are the best chicken satay I've ever eaten. Flavorful yet still juicy and moist, unlike the usual dry ones at other restaurants. Each order comes with 6, but I can probably eat 2 plates just by myself! Everything else is really good as well. I love their Indonesian Fried Rice. We ordered the combination one that had meat and shrimp. It had the perfect amount of kick to it! My other fave was their Fish in Curry Sauce. The fish is comes out tender and soft, without being overcooked. The curry is not that spicy for those wary of spicy food. I loved the sauce so much that I ate it with the fried rice we ordered. Overall, food is delicious, portions are pretty big, and prices are reasonable. I went with a group of 10 people and we ordered 8 items. We all left super stuffed! With tax and tip, we each ended up paying only $8 each! Such a great hidden gem!! The owner is an Indonesian-Chinese man who is super friendly. If you are not sure what to order, he'll give some great recommendations. The fried rice and fish in curry sauce we ordered were both recommended by him! Parking: Small parking lot for the small strip mall.

Came here from Irvine for Indonesian food several times, this place is awesome. The Nasi Bungkus on Sundays is the best dish I've had, and the owner is very nice - he recommended what to order and made sure that the spiciness on the Nasi Goreng and several other dishes was manageable. Two thumbs up and five stars for Sate House!

I really enjoyed eating at this place because it did give me a perspective of how real Indonesian food tastes like. My pure Indonesian friend brought me hear and told me that food taste similar if not the same as food one can find in Indonesia. I like their huge portions and sate. Meat was tender and juicy. Best place around Orange County area.

I met some Indonesian students studying in Boston who were vacationing in LA and asked them where their favorite place to eat Indonesian food was and they mentioned Sate house. That's a nice endorsement. The restaurant is a serious hole in the wall. Decor is outdated. Strip Mall is kinda sketch but food is great. The sate's are delicious and a must order, after all the restaurant is called Sate House. I like the tenderness of the pork but you can't go wrong with any of the meat choices. For those that are a little more adventurous try a dish with petai. It's a stinky green bean. It's an acquired taste. I googled the healthful properties and it's a veggie that is really good for you. It gives you vitamins and minerals that you normally wouldn't get. Cash only and they have really weird hours on Wednesdays.

Cash only! Great food and service. Can not go wrong with any of the BBQ sticks! The drinks are super sweet and tasty. Everything else we have tried on the menu is good too.

I think what really made the difference here is the atmosphere the owner created the minute we stepped into the restaurant. He is extremely friendly and just makes your dining experience that much better. He basically chose all the food for us since we didn't really what to order and was all smiles the entire time. Also the food here was good, and the prices were very affordable. So there isn't really a negative, except this place might be a little hard to find. It's stuck in the corner. So come try it out! The owner will make your day.

This place is very good and decently priced. Their pork sate with peanut dipping sauce is out of this world. I also always get the Tong Choy (sauteed veggie with shrimp paste). My favorite thing about this place is that the owner is beyond friendly. He always hooks me up and I tip him generously for that. The flavors are very authentic and the food comes out fast. I've still yet to try everything on the menu, a few yelpers mentioned stinky bean...I tried it and it wasn't too stinky but suppose to be very good for you. Lol anyways its definitely worth trying this local hidden gem. Don't forget the pork sate!!! :)

It's quite an adventure trying something new! We've never tried Indonesian food but was always curious. What piqued our interest even more is Sate House is a family-owned non-chain that Yelped very well. We got the fried filet with ballad sauce, stir fried garlic bean sprouts, and the shrimp fried rice. Loved every bite! Service was really helpful and friendly. Cash only.

Their curry with fish filet #33 and chicken satay were so delicious! Beef stew was very tasty and authentic plus the nasi goreng fried rice was great! I definitely will come back! Absolutely satisfied with the food and friendly customer service.

Going to Indonesia in a couple months so I wanted to familiarize myself with Indo food. Got a recommendation from a friend to try this place. Went with multiple people, which was nice because it gave me an opportunity to try many dishes. We had the fried chicken, fish in a coconut based sauce, Indo fried rice, whole fish with a yummy sauce, calamari, & Nasi Bangus. Everything was amazing. So flavorful, which honestly I expected from the pics. My favorite items were the tripe fried rice & the calamari, the sauce they put on the calamari was remarkable.

I dont know if my taste palate changed or what but everything I ate today was just NOT as good as I thought it would be! I got the Nasi Goreng again because I remember loving it last time and this time it was not great at all. The rice was a little mushy and it tasted kind of like ketchup fried rice...not what I was hoping for. We also got the fried flat noodle (forgot its indo name) and that was very very bland. The bbq chicken with coconut milk was okay... the chicken was very tender and had flavor but nothing to die for. I was very dissappointed today. dont know if I'd come back. Waiter is super nice still, though!

I always get the same thing when I come here which is the Indonesian fried rice. They give huge portions, but be wary the medium spicy is actually pretty spicy and usually I can handle spicy food. The service was quick, manager was nice, and the food quality itself is excellent. The only reason I took 1 star away is because I always feel awkward picking up food here. There is no waiting area I'm just left standing in the middle of the dining area while everyone eats and stares at me.

I came here a while back with two of my girlfriends and had two orders of lamb sate and some type of fried rice. I do not remember what the rice was called but I remember liking it, especially when I mixed some of the peanut dipping sauce the lamb sate came with into my rice! I want to come back again !! The lamb sate was really good .. Also I love peanut butter and the dipping sauce was peanutty. Also I remember watching Family Feud and Jeopardy! here, which are some of my favorite game shows !!! The owner must have good taste in TV! Strangely, the rest of the reviews talk about the owner a lot, but he did not talk to me and my friends and also went missing into the kitchen when we needed to grab the check. .. I don't remember how much I paid but it must have been less than $30 for us three or else I probably wouldn't like this place.

Cozy and authentic. Thought I'd try this place out since it's close by and had really good reviews. Definitely a Mom & Pop shop so it's legit! The restaurant itself is pretty run-down, but the owner/staff are really pleasant and fun to talk to. The owner could tell it was our first time since we were flipping through the pictures on yelp and not really looking at the menu. Yelp has done the business good! It makes me happy to see them get new business from this site. The owner ended up recommending some of their popular dishes. We got the fried rice, Indonesian egg roll, potato ball, and the chicken sate. The filling in the egg roll and potato ball are pretty much the same, but I like the egg roll version better since it had a lot more flavor than the potato ball! It was a lot of food...and all carbs, so there was definitely leftovers. Don't love it, but at least if I ever crave Indonesian food nearby, I know where to go.

My constant quest for new Indonesian restaurants to try, I've come across Sate House. It's located pretty deep within Walnut, tucked within it's own private lot. It's pretty spacious, and there were a decent number of customers. From what we ordered, here is the rundown: - Nasi Bunkus - Quite a large order. Larger than other nasi bunkus at other Indonesian restaurants, although I think this order is meant to share rather than for the individual. The rice is a bit dry, but the rendang, ayam, and green beans were quite tasty. The telur balado was a bit dry as well. (Overall, not satisfied with the nasi bunkus.) - Nasi Kuning - It was pretty good. The ayam and other sides were quite tasty. Served with krupuk, which is always a plus! - Sate Ayam - Really tasty!! I was surprised after having my nasi bunkus, but they really have great sate. The chicken wasn't dried out, but very tender and complimented with the sate peanut sauce. I doubt I will return, unless the family want to go back. There are a couple notable Indonesian restaurants I've visited that I definitely prefer.

Never tried indo food except indo fried rice from jjs. I love supporting local mom&pops places so decided to try this place. ordered below. Beef rendang - I've had the Malaysian kind but theirs is more like stew, the Malaysian style is kind of a pulled pork texture. Wasn't a fan of this dish :\ shoulda went with an owner recommendation Nasi goring - fried rice with chicken, pork and shrimp and a fried egg. The rice was really crispy. And you can ask for mild or medium spicy Pork sate - I usually never order sate since It's a pretty simple dish, but since this place is known for it I had to and I'm glad I did. It might possibly be the best sate I've had at a restaurant. Tasted fresh off a BBQ grill and the peanut sauce was good! Food was cheap and came out quick. Well we were the only people left since it was a late dinner on a weekday. Overall I thought the food was okay but the sweet old man was very friendly, full of joy and had a big cheek to cheek grin on his face.. he definitely earned the 4 stars.

Friendly service, consistent food and great prices make this strip mall Indonesian restaurant a must visit if you're in the Walnut area. But be quick I hear they may go on vacation later in April... As I was a lone diner I had the weekend special which isn't on the menu: nasi bungkus which is a combo wrapped in a banana leaf. You get the green beans in coconut milk, chicken, braised beef all sat on white steamed rice and glass noodles which are cooked just right with a hint of white pepper. If you like spicy there is a mound of hot fragrant chutney sauce which you can mix in with each mouthful if you dare!! Sate House's customers are folks like me who discover it on Yelp! but also return customers, incl Europeans from The Netherlands looking for some familiar food ( old colonial-style home-cooking.) The food was good, but I missed out on the satay so I got some pork satay to go. Slighty sweet bbq flavors dipped in a fresh, nutty satay paste. Very good, although I did get a couple of grisly bits of pork in my skewers! If you are Cantonese, practice as the owner will ask where you are from and want to chat. It seems he and his wife are from Hong Kong and don't get to see family much.

We often noticed that this restaurant usually has a lot of customers, as we go to the video shop next door. We had dinner there lately and, tried their chicken and pork satay (BBQ) , bakmi goreng ( stir fried noodles ) and calamares (fried battered squid). Delicious !!! -I hope they will do something (toss it out) about the aquarium, an eyesore in the dining area.

I'd say 3.5! I'm rounding up because the owner of the restaurant was super nice. But I'm only giving 3.5 stars because nothing really stood out for me. It was delicious, but not memorable. We wanted to order nasi goreng, but he recommended the nasi bungkus -- I might have wanted a little more flavor and a lot more spice. It didn't quite do it for me, BUT I really want to give it another go. Until next time!

I really love this place! We come here several times a year to take out guests. The sates are delicious (especially the pork and chicken). The Nasi Goreng is perfectly seasoned almost every time I've been there. The cost is right, and is great for family style dining. Get the sates, fried rice, fried noodles, and you'll enjoy. The names are different on the menu, but they'll know what you're talking about. Mostly though, it's the level of service given by the kind gentleman at this restaurant that keeps me returning. He gives good advice, is prompt and courteous, and never fails to have a smile on his face. Keep in mind that it is only cash only, and you'll have a good experience here.

My friends and I walk up to the restaurant. Health grade B in the window. Ok, totally fine. We walk in, knowing the decor will be bare/old. Not as bad as I thought it'd be...half the xmas lights hanging on the wall are working. The specials on the wall are handwritten, some of them post-its? We're seated next to an old fish tank. Moldy water still half filled. No fish (they wouldn't survive that). I'm facing it. Please get rid of this thing. I probably would've given it a 2, but the servers were so sweet and helpful when explaining the menu and how to eat each plate as it was served. 3 people shared the following: Nasi Bungkus- only available on the weekends. It's a traditional dish. It's wrapped in a banana leaf and has rice, noodles, choice of meat (chicken in my case), egg, and some veggies. Every thing is piled into the leaf and you mix it up when it's served. There's a corner of the leaf where they pack some hot spices. If you don't want to end up killing your taste buds for the day, I'd suggest removing it before you mix. We took most of it out, but it was still pretty spicy and i love spice. That said, it tasted like I was eating a dish I made with all the leftovers in the fridge and then forgot to put any seasoning in it, despite all the spice. I'll have to try this somewhere else to see if this was a one time taste fluke. You will have leftovers...pun intended. chicken sate-super moist and flavorful. 6 skewers. fried calamari-the calamari itself was plain, but the garlic it was mixed with was yum. I took it and mixed it with everything else we ordered. It made everything else taste so much better... chicken fried rice- nothing special, but better than the rice in the nasi bungkus.

Update: 0 Stars Hubs had Nasi Kuning. Rice was mushy. Chicken breast was literally petrified. Absolutely inedible. Hubs informed the owner/waiter who curtly told him too bad, that's the way it is. On to the rendang the entire piece was one piece of beef fat. Hubs informed the owner who said that it is beef tendon. No. It was beef fat. I know the texture of tendon. My rice dish wrapped in banana leaf was similar in total lack of quality. Rice was dry, rending was barely edible, and chicken leg was dry. The only thing tasty was the green beans/sauce. Hubs had fresh coconut drink. I would estimate about 8 strands of coconut---just not adequate for $3 and compared to other Indo restaurants' portions. We've been to this restaurant several times; I'm certain the owner knew this. Yet, absolutely no attempt in making the situation right. We will NEVER come back. Total lack of pride in his food. Major fail.

As a first timer eating Indonesian food it was very good to me. I ordered the lamb fried rice and lamb sate (I love lamb). Both dishes were very satisfying! The fried rice was the perfect amount of spicy although it was a tad oily. The lamb sate was so juicy and good I savored every bite. The service here is also great. The server was very personable and friendly.

This is the best part ! Finding another truly fantastic restaurant. You never really know what to expect, given the wide range of tastes among the yelp reviewers. Hands down, one of the better Indonesian restaurant. Food is authentic, not americanized. My best description of americanized food. Removing and dulling down the spices and exotic flavors, to appease a broader range of customers. It deeply saddens me , how some of these people just don't appreciate the authenticity of these mom and pop owned stores. They just give a poor rating because their not accustomed to the different cooking styles. Nasi Goreng (Fried Rice) with chicken, beef, shrimp, peppers, and a fried egg.-Excellent flavor and super spicy. I was given fair warning, before I ordered this dish! Loved it! After the first five bites, beads of sweat began to form on my forehead! Bihon Goreng(Fried Noodles) with chicken, beef, and shrimp-First bite, oh my god!!!! The flavors, the spices, that home cooked exotic taste, just hit me! Wow!!!! Sate Ayam (Chicken on a skewer)-De-yummylicious! Cook perfect! Chicken moist, tender, and tasty. Add the peanut butter sauce, and now you have a home run!! Very generous food portions. Service-Warm friendly greeting. Felt very welcomed to be in their establishment. Parking-Limited , small private lot shared with other vendors.

I love Sate House! This business has been here for 11 years but they serve quality food like they just opened. Owners are super nice. The gentleman is super fussy about his food, it's hilarious. He wouldn't let me order extra spicy and he was right! Listen to the owner if he makes recommendations! Sate Kambing - lamb satay - sooo tender. not gamey at all. nice dark char. Nasi Baso - fried meatball rice, medium spicy - medium spicy is spicy! egg was perfectly fried with crisp brown edges with a soft yolk. soooo gooood. it's a standard dish but they do it the best here. Soto Babat - tripe soup - this was ok. it was a little stinky like tripe usually is but that didn't bother me. the broth coulda been tastier. Ikan Balado - fried fish with chili sauce - the sauce was awesome. a little tangy, sweet and mildly spicy. the breaded filets threw me off. it was good but i would've rather had a whole fish or filets without breading. Watermelon tapioca drink - this is super sweet. order it first so by the time you're finished with food the ice will have melted and tempered the sweetness. you can get it without coconut milk but you'll need it if you order spicy food!

I was excited to come here because of Priscilla D.'s review. I was born in Indonesia and grew up eating Indonesian food just like her, and it has not been easy to find a great Indonesian restaurant in SoCal. Very few of them can deliver authentic flavors. Unfortunately, my excitement turned to disappointment. When we arrived, the restaurant was pretty empty save for two tables. The staff was friendly, but they spent a lot of time in the kitchen, so getting their attention was a little tricky. Maybe they just happened to be understaffed that day or sometihng? The guy who took our order was really nice, though. My boyfriend ordered the bakmi goreng (fried noodles with shrimp, beef, and chicken) which tasted fine if not mediocre. There was nothing special about it. Everything about it was just standard. I ordered the gule kambing (lamb stew), which was a big disappointment. I expected the dish to have more than just broth and meat. I thought gule was supposed to have vegetables, too. Goodness, it was just plain. Once again, nothing special. Perhaps the only saving grace was the es campur. But then again, it's hard to mess up es campur. The drink itself was sweet and delicious, as were the fillings (grass jelly, young coconut, etc.) However, if this is the best thing about your restaurant, then this is not a good sign. A couple more things I don't like: they charge extra for rice and it's cash only. What? Come on. I feel bad that I took my boyfriend here. He's not getting a good glimpse of Indonesian cuisine. We won't be coming back.

The information here says it's closed at 9 PM. last monday I went there all the way from my office in LA straight to Walnut, arrived there around 7:30 & the owner told us that they were closed and showed us the sign that they're close at 8 PM (well it wasn't even 8PM yet!) So disappointed. :(

I've been a regular here since I lived in Walnut in 2009. The owner is the waiter who takes your orders and refills your water. I'm Malaysian, and he's Indonesian so we can actually speak well in Indo-Malay with each other. This is where I go to get my fix of authentic Indonesian food since Yazmin's, Little Malaysia and Belachan Grill are too far away. Now on to the food: My go-to is always their sate, grilled perfectly and comes with peanut sauce, rice cakes (lontong) and pickled cucumber (acar). They have a choice of beef, pork (crowd favorite), chicken and lamb (my favorite). Their fried rice is always flavorful and plentiful, with choice of meat or shrimp, a fried egg and pick your own spiciness level. You can request it to come with the stinky bean (petai) as well and if you're like me, the table condiments (sambal) would add more flavor to your rice dishes. They also have family style dishes like the stir fried ong-choy with shrimp paste (kangkung belachan), egg fuyong, chilli chicken, sweet and sour fish, deep fried squid with garlic, fried shrimp with cheese sauce, and beef rendang are the many that I've tried and they never disappoint. If you don't know what to order, the owner is good with getting a feel as to what your liking is and recommending some dishes. If you're new to Indonesian food, start with the sate, then you'll start moving on to the other items on the menu.

Food: Very good and tasty sate. Unfortunately, everything else we order was decent. The noodle and rice dishes were not as tasty. My mom said they add too much MSG, which made my mom very thirsty. It's an ok Mom-Pop place. Service: I think the waiter is also the owner. He was actually pretty friendly. Overall: The sate are pretty good here, I may have to sample other dishes to get a better feel for this place.

Super nice owner !! LOL. He is the warmest and friendliest person of restaurant owner I've ever met. When "Oom" is not busy he will chit chat with you. On the serious note, food were fantastic. We had Nasi Bungkus (available on weekend only), Nasi Rames, Nasi Kuning, Nasi Goreng (spicy !!), Bihun Goreng, Sate Ayam, Gado Gado, Fired Chicken Asem Manis, Lontong Cap Gomeh and among other thing. My Indonesian friend's said this is as authentic Indo food as you can get ... and the price was reasonable. This place kind of hiding in the very small plaza right in the corner!

My first visit was definitely a good one. My favorite thing about this place is the service; they are all very welcoming, really nice, always smiling, and most importantly: not afraid to recommend what's good with what, customers favorite, and so forth. I like that kind of service because it's really annoying when it's your first time there and you obviously wanna try something good so that you'd go back the next time, but they only say oh everything's good, or it all depends on what you wanna eat at that time, and so on. The chicken sate is definitely the best, obviously right since the name of the place is sate house. I ordered some of the balado food and was a little surprised because they're sweet and not even close to spicy, yet balado is supposedly spicy. Kangkung was good too, and nasi bungkus was decent. I ordered cendol for dessert but I would probably not recommend it. This was overall a good visit, and if you ask me, yes I would go back some other time.

I just came back from vacationing in SE Asia and the one thing I really missed was the spicy foods. My friend recommended Sate House and it really hit the spot for my craving! I've been back there 3 times since then and even brought my family. Some highlights include their fried rice with your choice of meats, the pork satay, and the fried fish. Most of their dishes can be quite spicy, but you can request for them to make it more mild. The staff here are really friendly and the owner always seems to be there. He assisted me with the menu on my first visit and even comes to each table to make sure everything was tasting good. I'll surely be back here again! Highly recommended!

one of my favorite places to get my indonesian food cravings. ive been here many times and the food has always been good. last time i came, i got fried fish with balado sauce for $7.50 i believe ( yelp.com/biz_photos/sate… ). i thought its going to be a whole fish instead of fish fillet since the menu just said fried fish. o well, its still good even though it wasnt spicy enough. it would have been much better if make it to be more spicy. my brother got their tripe fried rice for about $7.50 ( yelp.com/biz_photos/sate… ). he always got this whenever we came here coz he loves their tripe fried rice. it has some good aromatic smell and flavorings, but im not a big fan of it. service was pretty nice and friendly. but this place only accept cast. so make sure you go to atm machine or something before you come here.

Was in the area and found this place on yelp. So glad we gave it a try! Wife and I ordered lamb satay, fish filet in balado (?) sauce, and sautéed veggie. We came in early and got the chance to chat with the owners. They're nice and accommodating and made very good recommendations. We enjoyed everything we got. The sauce is amazing with a hint of lemongrass! And you can specify the spice level. So good! Will definitely come back!

This place is nice and family owned, the owner is very friendly and will be more than happy to help with the dishes information and suggestion. The place is very small and casual and attended by the owner himself, Service can be a little bit slow but be patient as your dish should came out. Most of my coworkers loved this place and my manager visit this joint frequently. Keep in mind this is a CASH ONLY store and don't hate the store because of it ^_^v here are some of my suggested Dishes Sambal Balado variant - Fish, Squid OR Chicken, I've tried their Chicken and Fish. The fish one by far tasted better. Since they initially came as Spicy, you can ask them to be no spicy. Try not to order this dish for ToGo if possible... Sate variant - Their Chicken Sate (Satay) are by far the best Sate I've ever ate since I came to US. Save yourself from other meat, but Pork arent too bad either, my office workers voted their Chicken Satay is better than their Pork Sate. Nasi Goreng (Fried rice) variant - Indonesian cuisine are known for their delicious Fried rice. They are a must order to any Indonesian cuisine restaurant (at least for me ^^). I would say their Lamb Fried Rice is very good and tasty, but if not the regular Indonesian fried rice is good enough. Beef Rendang - the beef is very Tender and flavor. Spicy food though, ask for non Spicy if you cant handle it. Es Teler - a must order! Coconut, Jackfruit, Avocado and other goodies. Looks can be deceiving but this thing is so delicious that my Malaysian friend ordered 2 in one meal. Skip this if you hate sweet stuff though. So-so dishes (they are ok, but its not there yet) Sweet and Sour chicken - not too bad, but taste very chinese cuisine ^_^;; Ayam Goreng Kalasan - The size of the chicken is pretty big, The flavor outside is decent but the meat can be dry, add some Sambal/Chili and it'll taste much better.

This place is not as good as I thought it was gonna be. I read the reviews and it got 4 and a half stars. And I don't know how it got that many stars. CONS - Cash only!!!!!! Hate it. - Running out of food??? I first ordered rawon(beef soup) and they said that they ran out. How could they've run out at 1pm when they open at 11. Then I ordered another soup and they said they ran out of that too. So I just gave up on ordering any other soup after that. - Don't know how to cook. I ordered ayam kalasan (fried chicken) and it was super dry. Didn't have much taste to it either. I use a lot of hot sauce to give it some flavor. - The place is too big for the amount of staff that's working. They only have one guy working as a waiter and there was about 15 tables. PROS - The watermelon and tapioca is pretty good. That's pretty much it. If you wanna get some better Indonesian food, go to Indo kitchen in Alhambra or banana leaf in San Gabriel. They're the same owner and it's really good and better than this one. I promise you. Or you can just go to my house and Ill cook you some better Indonesian food. Lol just playing. (NOT JS/IR Approve)

This was my first time I tried Indonesian food and it was delicious! Every bite was a burst of different flavors! Most of the dishes I tried was a little spicy, so if you can't eat spicy food, you should let them know. I got the dishes recommended by the owner and they were all delicious. I wish I can remember the names but there was a FISH SOUP which was my favorite. Good service; good food. I can't wait to return.

Real authentic Indonesian food. I came here with my family and we ordered the sate, fried rice, nasi goreng, gado gado, and so many other things.. The gado gado was of good portion and the sauce was really good and not too peanut-y. The pork from the pork sate was really really juicy and delicious. The portion of this dish was also really decent. The fried rice was really well cooked because the fire from the stove is big enough for the favors to really come alive. The owner is very, very friendly. He speaks Mandarin, Cantonese, Indonesian, and of course, English. We ordered so much food at the restaurant and MORE food for the drive home and the restaurant was really generous and gave us lots of sauce to go with the gado gado and nasi goreng that we ordered to go. I honestly can't wait to come back and eat more of their food!

Curry Curry Curry...Indonesian Curry! The store front is pretty small, but the inside is cozy. Of course we ate family style. Here are the highlights: ~Curry Dish #27 #27 Curry was definitely good. However, I would swap out the shrimp and tofu for chicken on the next try. ~SATAY So this place is called Satay House. Based on this and the suggestion from our host, we opted for the pork satay as our second dish. While the pork was pretty good, I didn't find anything special about this dish. It is very similar to the Thai version with a slight difference in taste. Definitely the curry dish was the winner. Our host suggested medium spicy, but I think the dish would be better if you just order it spicy. Lunch will run you about 10 bucks with tax and tip. Plenty of parking. I will definitely return to try other dishes...but only after I try a few more restaurants. You may also wish to read Steven N's review..Pretty good stuff. I didn't realize the first time he ate Indonesian was here.

It was not as good as I hope :( Walking in, nobody was inside. The service was nice. The owner chit chat with us and gave us recommendation on dishes. The Indonesian fried rice was dry. We did not even finish the dish. Beef Satay was normal. nothing special. The Oxtail soup was the best. Flavorful. Meat falls off the bone. Not my cup of tea.

The Sate! The Sate! The Sate! Enough said. Oh. Wait...the Nasi Goreng is super flavorful.

Once you step into the restaurant, you won't be impressed by the ordinary look of it...but once you sit down, BEST sate in the area! I do recommend getting the pork sate. But sorry, they don't serve beef sate here :/ Service is great and they don't mind explaining to you about their Indonesian dishes. The servers, who are just the owners I believe, can also speak cantonese and mandarin- chinese. It's a nice family business.

The Good: My girlfriend and I were quickly seated, the staff was super friendly, it's a hole in the wall establishment, but it definitely has a date ambiance to it. Bakmi Goreng (fried noodles) was safe and enjoyable and the Es Campur (sweet dessert drink) hit the spot for my sweet tooth. The Bad: Gule Kambing (Lamb Stew) had very few pieces of meat and was forgettable in terms of flavor and presentation. The Ugly: As expected, the meal was relatively expensive in terms of what we got, and I'm guessing I ordered the wrong things because I wasn't left with a very good impression. The Verdict: I'm in no hurry to come back, but I'm all ears if people can suggest items that are delicious and filling.

I gotta say i was hella impressed with the service here...it was on the verge of annoying but you can't fault someone for being so excited about their food that they wanted to make sure your experience was the best! We were able to make special requests too! We got the Nasi Goreng (fried rice)...delish...especially spicy...shuda ordered more Chicken Satay...yum! shuda ordered more Fish in Curry Sauce...pretty good...some unique ingredients in there TOfu w/veggies...not bad o ya CASH ONLY...also if they find out ur chinese they WILL speak chinese to you...mandarin or canto...it don't matter!

This place is crazy good Sate Babi Rujak Petis, the server asks you to what degree of "pedas" or heat as in spicy you want. My Indonesian wife says it's the best Indonesian food she's had outside of Indonesia.

We have come back to Sate House at least 8 times since our fist visit. We bring family and friends and have yet to be disappointed. We're branching out and trying new things on the menu but our favorites are the pork satay, karu karu (am I spelling that right?), nasi bungas (only served on weekends), garlic and pepper shrimp, fish or shrimp with balado sauce, and the sweet and sour chicken.

Best Indonesian restaurant around the area!! Must try the fried rice with their kabobs aka satays ( beef and lamb) delicious!!!! Food portion and price are reasonable. Very friendly customer service. Mom n pop restaurant.

Went a couple months ago based on yelp reviews and took my little girls. Was not impressed. My girls refused to eat the food and the sate just tasted greasy and undercooked. We will not go back.

I used to come here just for the fried rice or noodles because of the explosion of flavors, but... something changed. The fried rice I ordered a few months ago was drenched in oil and super soggy. There was no flavor at all in the fried noodle I recently ordered. I see the same people cooking and running the place. What's going on? I will give them a few more tries.

I walked into the restaurant, not expecting much. The decor gave off a vintage Asian mom-and-pop shop vibe, and the TV was playing a recent episode of Jeopardy. Based on the ambiance alone, this restaurant was nothing special. I took a few drags from my cigarette and perused the menu. I didn't really know what to get, so I went on Yelp and searched for the most delicious looking photo; the satays definitely caught the attention of my eyes and salivary organs.I asked the kind waiter, who was obviously the owner, which satay was most popular. He recommended the pork satay, so that was what I got. While waiting, I perused the daily news on my phone. Sweat accumulated on the tips of my fingertips as I anticipated the delicious meat. I was brought back to the days where my parents left the house, and I was left alone with free time and the internet. Oh what excitement I felt! My mind was solely focused on the forthcoming orgasm that would inevitably occur in my mouth. Then, it came. The presentation of the dish was quite nice. It was clear that effort was exerted in preparing the sauce, as it had a fancy swirl of black sauce atop the beige peanut base sauce. The portion was quite sizable; I would leave the restaurant stuffed. I picked up one stick and dipped it into the sauce. As I brought it towards my mouth, I felt the saliva squirt from under my tongue. Nothing could have prepared me for the amazing meat that entered my mouth. I danced my tongue around the kebab, dousing my tongue with its tangy juices, and I treated each satay the way Tom Hanks treated his first meal upon arriving back to civilization. The rich peanut sauce complemented the perfectly grilled meat; It provided a contrast to the saltiness of meat, and my palate could not be more than pleased. Overall, I had a fantastic experience dining at Satay House, and I would definitely come again.

hubby and i decided to skip 626 night market and eat yummy indonesian food instead. which turned out great since we heard about the horrid lines at the nigh market. there was no one in the restaurant at 8:00pm on a saturday night. the owner (who speaks cantonese, indoensian, english, and mandarin) enthusiastically recommended the nasi bungkus (banana leaf wrapped rice with pork, chicken, beef and veggies) and their sate house satay sticks. food came quick and everything was delicious! i loved how tender, juicy, and flavorful the chicken satay sticks were!! also the rice in the bungkus was flavored and the meats were tender. we added their spicy "sauce" to it - sorta sweet and spicy - and it made for a wonderfully satisfying dinner! total was $15. CASH ONLY and free parking in their lot. definitely a hole in the wall place!!

  • Vivian T.

NASI GORENG!!! :) I've only had the nasi goreng and the satays here. I got the chicken satay this time and it is very tender and juicy. I have tried the beef satay but it had too much fat for my liking. The Indonesian fried rice is spot on and you get a lot! Very worth the $8. I have never dined in here before but the male owner (I think) is usually very helpful and polite. And this is the few places where you see a lot of women "maning" the kitchen. You can kind of see the kitchen if you go up to the counter to pay and when I peaked inside, there were women! Surprising to me because most restaurants nowadays have more males in the kitchen.

Sate house...I really want to bump up this review because of how nice you are. Ordered nasi goreng babat, nasi bungkus, sate ayam and es tape. Nasi Goreng Babat: tripe fried rice..I was so craving for fried rice like you wouldn't believe it. I was expecting cruncy tripe with my fried rice...not crunchy..not even fried. It is served with fried egg and pickled spicy cucumber. 3.5 stars. Sate Ayam: ordered chicken sate because the name of the restaurant is Sate House. I think I can make better chicken sate than this..3 stars. Nasi Bungkus: rice wrapped in banana leaf with fried rice noodle, tofu-green beans, grilled chicken wing, beef curry and spicy egg. Not my favorite. 3 stars. Shrimp Cracker: not the best quality. 2 stars. Es Tape: rose syrup with fermented yummy stuff (dunno the english name). It was yummy but needed more syrup. The owner was nice enough to give me more syrup. Service was 5 stars. Not too many restaurants treat their customers like this...superb service. 3 stars!! Sate House is kinda yummylicious!!

mmmm....I really really wanted to like this place. But.....it just wasn't as good as I had hoped for. With the name of sate house, I really thought that the sates were going to be super good....but they weren't. I also had the fried rice and vegetable, both were just average as well. The owner does speak a variety of languages and will be more than happy to assist you with the menu. He was very friendly and helpful, but the food just didn't cut it for me. There are just too many better restaurants in the surrounding area to choose from, I don't think I will be back here for more. Oh.....plus....it's cash only! So have your moolahs ready.

Finally, feel like home by coming to Sate House. I think this is the only indo restaurant that don't use MSG. I found this through Yelp and never come back to any other indo restaurant that I used to go. The owner, husband and wife, are really nice! They make you feel like eating at your own home, and very friendly :) The price is very reasonable with huge portions. This will be my favorite indo restaurant from now on!!!

Ordered two things: pork satay and rendang. I have to agree with most of the reviews on here... The pork satay was so good! The meat was tender and tasty. I would definitely order it again. :D The meat in the rendang (which was beef) was also tender and very good, but cold. :/ My last note is that the service was extremely friendly! I would come again.

I went here yesterday, and it was my first time trying Indonesian food! CASH ONLY! I had to go to the liquor store in the same plaza to get cash from their ATM :( ... but it was SO worth it! I got the Nasi goreng campur, which is a fried rice with three different kinds of meats. It was good! Fried rice usually doesn't get too exciting for me. Their chicken satay was good too! The peanut sauce with the hoisin or soy sauce complements well as a perfect dipping sauce for the skewers! The fried rice & chicken satay have a pickled vegetables on the side. The waiter knew I was Korean, so he told me as he pointed to a yellow vegetable & told me he bought it from the Korean market. I figured it looked familiar because it's damooji (for my Korean friends)! But what blew me away was the IKAN BALADO! OH MY! It's fried fish with balado sauce on top. MM It was my first time trying balado sauce & I now know that I love it!! I'm not tooooo fond of eating fish at restaurants, but the ikan didn't have a super fishy taste and almost resembled the taste of tender, juicy fried chicken! My friends also got a dessert (Es campur, I think)... but I couldn't eat any of it because I gave up dessert for lent :( But they seemed really happy with it! It's pretty much shaved ice with different kinds of jelly hiding under it.. But if you don't think this fits your taste, Meow Meow cafe is only a plaza or two away!

It's been over a year since I've visited this restaurant and never gone back. I was searching another Indonesian place to check out today, and recognized this one, so here's the delayed review: I've grown up eating Inonesian at least a couple times-a-week (even traveled for 3 wks in Bali, Jakarta, and Toraja) at a venue called Blue Orchid in Arcadia, unfortunately, they've been closed for the last ten yrs or so, and I've YET to find a great replacement. Tops in Pasadena is a closer, and better substitute for me, but it's always to go!! The restaurant is a little out of the way for me, and I've tried it, it was just ok for me, and I didn't need to return. The service was GREAT, I agree! The look and feel/ decor is very similar to my past venue favorite, just a casual setting. I ordered my typical items: Gado Gado w/extra peanut sauce& xtra achar (cucumber salad-ish side Nasi Goreng *fried rice Satay Ayem *chicken w/xtra peanut sauce Fried Noodles too, chicken and of course our several bags of shrimp chips (kruprek?? sp?) I wasn't too familiar with allthe curry items at that time, and didn't venture there. In a nutshell, it was all just really bland to me. Nothing too fragrant either :( I really had high expectations of this place. Everything looked as authentic as I liked, but it just fell really short on taste. I'm trying Chicky's in Duarte today!

CASH ONLY. After reading such good reviews about this place, my brother and I decided to come here for dinner. The owner is super friendly and is, to my surprise, fluent in CANTONESE. We never really had Indonesian food before, so he recommended the Indonesian Fried Rice and the Pork Satay. The Pork Satay is tasty and grilled to perfection. Love the sauce! The Indonesian Fried Rice is huge! My brother and I shared the fried rice and it was enough for the both of us. TL;DR: Reasonable price for pretty good food. Will definitely come back.

I'm half malay/indonesian so I am very picky when it comes to Indonesian food. The owners are very nice and gave us some recommendations, I also picked a few of my favourites. We had nasi goreng kambing, ayam goreng, sate kambing, gado gado, rendang... The sates were flavourful, but a little chewy. I was in heaven with my gado gado, it was great. Ayam Goreng was good, pretty juicy and tasty. The rendang was really good. I will definitely come here again if I am in the area.

Just had lunch here. Thanks to Yelpers ahead of me I was forewarned about the slow service from the understaffed restaurant. To be fair, after waiting like 20 mins, our orders were taken and our food was out within 10 mins. strange that it took less time to cook our order than to take it. The signature sate was good. The lamb sate was unusual bu the chicken sate was tastier. The gravy for the cumi was a little thin although it was great to have the petai in it. The nasi bungkus, which yelpers raved about, was a let down after reading all that hype as was the nasi kuning. But he fried rice with tripe was delicious and unusual. Dont bother with the cendol: watery green water. My fav was the fried fish with the baladon sauce: that was really thick and rich.

Excellent Indonesian food at very reasonable prices. This is a true down-home, family run business. Come for the food, for value and for friendly service from someone who genuinely loves his job. Status-conscious and overdressed folks should take a pass.

Yum Yum BAAA... I had a great time here with my friend, fellow yelper, Karina. She's indonesian and i never had indonesian, so for this monht's lunch, we chose the Sate House. I read great reviews on Yelp so I was looking forward to the food. I got there earlier than Karina and walked in to a roomful of people grubbing away at delicious food. Since we were there on the weekend, I saw the weekend special, Nasi Bungkus, yummy delicious variety of meat (chicken, beef tendon, shirmp paste), sweet green beans and 2 different types of rice steamed in a banana leaf. It's a party! Well Karina soon joined me and she ordered away. We ended up with Indonesian Fried Rice with Tripe & Egg, Nasi Bungkus and Lamb Sate. The Fried Rice was full of chewy tripe & the sunny side up egg added the perfect coating to the rice. The lamb was cooked perfectly, not too many fatty pieces with seasoning to match with the peanut sauce. The Nasi Bungkus was a delight. It had every kind of taste of meat, veggies, salty, sweet, fishy & all. Thanks Karina for the help. :)

Picked up the Indonesian fried rice with chicken, pork, and shrimp. Kind of greasy but then again what fried rice isn't? It was flavorful and tasty. I got it mild so I saw some peppers but it wasn't spicy. Service is great! The gentleman there was very friendly and helped make recommendations. Would try other items next time I'm in the area.

Hot dog! Hot diggity dog! Hot dog- hot dog- hot diggity dog! My qualifications for this review: -I've been married to a Dutch-Indonesian for 3+ years (not including dating time). -My mother-in-law loves me; she cooks, almost exclusively, Indonesian food. -I'm chubby. Its been a few years since I've been here- maybe 4- an my memory was a little hazy on my last experience. Last night, we decided to take out my sister and her husband and another couple to eat Indo for the first time. When we walked in we were greeted by (who I presumed to be) the owner with a very warm welcome and a pleasant attitude; he was nice, joked just enough, and was very attentive. For food, we (my wife and I) ordered for everyone: Sate- Chicken and Pork (Chicken on a stick) Rendang (A beef, served in a saucy stew style) Gado Gado (Vegetables and egg served with peanut sauce) Nasi Goreng (Fried Rice- we got ours with mild spiciness and it was perfect) Bami Goreng (Fried Noodles) Lastly, he asked if we wanted the special. Fortunately we said yes! It was a half chicken, beef, green beans and delicious rice all wrapped and steamed in a banana leaf. it was the star of the show- if they offer this to you, definitely get it! For desert we had Cendol(pronounced "ChenDahl") (think boba milk tea meets jello and jack fruit), and our friends loved it. Anyways, this was one of the best dinners I'd had in a while! Everyone loved it , and I'm glad they had Indo done right, because its a little hard to get down, and not too many places serve it as they should. Who should come here: People looking for a different Asian cuisine experience, who've played out Thai to the bone. I love my Thai, but I think I'll choose coming here over Thai for the next few times. Not only that, but it came out to 11.00 per person, including desert- Beat that Chilies!

I was in my car passing through the area after some heavy exercise when I knew I needed to get some food into my system. So I searched for some highly recommended restaurants in the area and saw this Indonesian place with a 4 1/2 star rating. I've been to Jakarta, Indonesia a couple of times the past two years, and there are a couple of Indonesian dishes I love. Nasi Goreng, Indonesia's take on fried rice, is one of them. So I ordered takeout from this Sate House, extra spicy. Their Nasi Goreng comes with a fried egg on top. It was really spicy, just as spicy as I would have hoped. It was red and quite oily, as this dish usually is, and I'm glad to say I really liked this dish from the Sate House. It tasted authentic. I hope to stop by for more of their food when I'm in the area again.

This is the best that it can get besides homemade Indonesian food. Definitely reminds me of my childhood. Go on the weekend and get the Nasi Bungkus. They only serve it on Saturday and Sunday so make sure you go then. Also the lamb sate is awesome. The service is great. The owner really gets to know his customers.

The service here is wonderful. The owner of Sate House is very kind, helpful, and attentive. The pork sate is quite flavorful and worth ordering. The fried rice is hearty and delicious as well. In terms of cost, the food is pretty affordable! The only thing I have to be careful about is not ordering too much because I have a habit of eating everything off the plates and wobbling out of the restaurant. (Not a pretty nor attractive sight! ) -_-

I love the service here! When we entered, we were met with a warm welcome from Hie (I don't know if this is how you really spell his name or the phonetic spelling, but it's what he told me...), who I am assuming is the owner. Seeing as to how none of us knew what to order, Hie proceeded to recommend several dishes to us. The curry with shrimp and tofu was yummy. There was a perfect balance between the flavor of the curry and the coconut milk. I can't remember much about the pork satay, but you can't go wrong with meat on a stick! Since it was raining outside, our last dish was the beef tendon soup. Not bad, but it didn't compare to how good the curry was. We also all ordered a side of rice for 65 cents to go along with the curry. Hie was great. He explained what everything in the dishes were and was very friendly. I am excited to come back here to try the other items on the menu.

Went there purposely in search of a new tasty Indonesian restaurant. And yes, we are hooked!! I know how to cook, so have an authentic place to go without slaving yourself in the kitchen is a treat!! We shared rawon - beef stew and chicken satay, everything is perfect, tasty & prices is very reasonable. For those whom are not familiar with Indonesian food, spices as pretty much same as Thai/Filipino cuisine. The couple who own it are friendly, and will help on on menu if needed. Will definitely come back for more, I am a fan!! ** Cash only

Great place to eat! Usually come here for special occasions...especially when my sister in law is down from Reno. We usually order: Satay babi (pork) with peanut sauce, Nasi goreng combination and Bami (noodles combination). Very filling and delicious! Try it...to me the food is a mixture taste of Thai and chinese.

  • Sophia L.

Owner is just about the friendliest man on earth but probably not the best multi-tasker, hence some of the negative service reviews. So if you can accept that your water glass may not be filled throughout the night and you might have to ask twice, it's a nice little spot for food in the area. We ordered the nasi goreng which was a bit oily but had really good flavor. The pork satay is worth the trip and there was one indonesian type egg roll that was delicious. Good local spot. Would go if I'm in the mood to get really full.

Small family owned restaurant with great service. Food was decent but not great. I recommend the skewers and the ong choi spinach. Do not recommend the fried chicken or indonesian fried rice (nasi goreng). I've had better nasi goreng else where but some yelpers seem to love it here.

Great food, fast service. BUT.....not well ventilated, very warm inside with no circulation of air. They only accept cash only in a plastic world. Lots of menu choices, BUT... Expect to hear "oh, we're out" . Not very clean inside. So the cons out weighed to pros. Be prepared to face a language barrier so go there knowing what you want, if they're not out. This is true Indo food. Just like your Oma would make. Not very friendly people.

I luv this resto, however, it's so far from where I live now. We ordered rendang (soft spicy meat), nasi goreng babat (beef tripe fried rice), fried fish, soto betawi (soup), kangkung (onchoy), fried chicken, and Satay. Everything that we ordered came out really good. This restaurant is like mom and pop's diner, the owner are mostly serving us, "oom" and "tante" as we called it and they're so friendly. Service was great and very accomodating. One of their food that's also good and recommended was Nasi Bungkus, but since we ate as group, we just ordered the a'la carte. If I ever come around these area, I would certainly drop by, and get my favorite, the beef tripe fried rice. YOu can also request how spicy you want your food to be, it's great. Parking is okay, it's in a joined complex with other stores. Price wise are good too, not overly pricey. I totally miss this place so bad...

our party ordered 6 dishes and all of them were absolutely delicious. this place would not dissapoint anyone judging from all the good food they make. the pork satay was very juicy and tender, not the the usual dry and burnt skewers. nasi goreng was like a spiced up version of regular chinese style fried rice. fried calamari was easy to chew and had this amazing sauce, similar to the yanksing SF makes except sweeter. it was a thick, spicy, sweet and savory chunky sauce. it was so good, i had this sauce with my rice. flavorful curry with juicy tender fish. the special of the day was a mix of meats, veggies and rice all steamed inside big leaves - reminded me of zhongzi (chinese tamale) except with different spices. we were recommended the fresh veggies of the day - which we appreciate. i would definitely come back here if i am in the area to see what the cheese-shrimp is all about since all their dishes are so unique tasting and mouthwateringly delicious!

my friends and i came here to "sample" their menu to cater an event. wheni say sample, i dont mean small portions, i mean we ordered over 10 different dishes on their menu. we had everything including beef and pork sates, fried noodles, fried rice, tender beef, veggies with chicken and tofu, fried shrimp with cheese (yes, CHEESE), fried fish (this was probably the least favorite), fried squid, shrimp with tofu in some kind of curry sauce, roast chicken (a little bit too dry for me). all the dishes were approx $6-7 each and our bill totaled just $120 including tax and tip. the staff was very friendly with a slight language barrier. BEWARE, this is a CASH ONLY place. so come prepared! this is a small little joint tucked away in the corner of a small plaza and i would say walnut's little hidden gem. p.s. we did end up ordering our party trays from them and the food was a big hit at the event!

I'm going to preach to the choir and say great sate!! Good customer service as well. However, we has the weekend special and it was so, so. It was a rice dish wrapped in banana leaf. The ingredients just seem like leftovers put together and steamed. Not a whole lot of flavors. Why did it get four stars? SATE!!!

Wow. This place is delicious. The service is excellent and the owner is really attentive to his customers. Indonesian food was a new experience for us and he guided us right through recommending certain dishes. We had lamb sate which were bomb and a delicious rice dish cooked in a banana leaf. It is cash only but worth the inconvenience. Beats going to nearby Banana boat/bay which is some sort of destination because of live music. Screw the music, I want excellent food. I have a stereo for music. If I'm eating out my focus is on what is going into my mouth, not my ears.

Last night, was the first time I ordered anything from Sate House. The owner/gentleman was very nice on the phone. I called him "ohm" (uncle in Indonesian) I placed a very large order to feed 40 of my family members who are in town. Ohm was very gratius, patient and humerous on the phone. I really didn't know what to order, I just looked on yelp for pictures of the dishes, so he recommended quite a few things for me. In the end I ordered, Nasi Kuning (yellow rice) Nasi Rames (still don't know what the difference between this and Nasi Bungkus) Lot's of Sate (beef, chicken and pork) Gado-Gado (salad dish) Bakmi Goreng (noodles) Tahu Goreng (fried tofu) I also got Es Cendol for my trip back to the hotel. We took over the pool/cabana area at the hotel we stayed at in Irvine. (like typical indonesians :) ) The food was a hit for my family.. I wished I would have ordered more of the satay's. It was literally gone in minutes! Some people prefers different meat, but that didn't matter when it came to the Satay's.. noone was choosey.. Nasi Rames was good too! The acar, chicken and rice was delicious! I'm not really a fan of the Bakmi goreng (I could make a better Bakmi Goreng using Indo Mie Ramen. All in all it was good! As long as my family loves it, I love it! The price was very reasonable to feed soo many people, definately cheaper than to take them out to a restaurant :)

first things first: CASH ONLY! Being Indonesian I have know how good Indonesian food tastes. I actually found this place after taking a wrong turn going to friend's house. The place is small and minimally decorated and the owner was very friendly. Upon finding out I was Indonesian we spoke about his buisness, family, and other stories of the motherland. I ordered the sop buntut (oxtail soup) which comes with carrots, potatoes, celery, and obiviously oxtail, served with a side of rice and bawang goreng (deep fried shallots) I also ordered a side of risoles (deep fried crepe filled with chicken, vegetables, and white sauce. rolled in panko) the food did not take too long to come and boy was I excited to dive in! Sop buntut - the oxtail was very tender and the broth was flavorful as it should be. the best part is the bawang goreng which adds a little crunch and flavor to the dish. I like to mix the rice and soup together and just get after it! This was almost as good as my mom's sop buntut. Risoles - perfectly fried and tasty. Very rich and and yet light at the same time. I will definitely come back here!

good service good food unique spices and dishes any spicy dishes we got medium and it was the perfect amount of spice to me although I consider myself on the light weight side of spice. pork satay tender pork skewers with a tangy sauce. The pork flavored with a teriyaki like sauce and was cooked perfectly. nasi gorang fried rice with a fried egg on top. decent but I would go bananas over it. got the fried calamari with asian sauce the fried calamari was average but the sauce was very good. Perfect spice with unique spices. chicken rice wrapped in bay leaves this was the special that is only served on the weekends. It consisted of a chicken leg with string beans, a hard boiled egg, and other spices. You mix it up like bibimbap and serve it. Decent and unique but not overally outstanding fish curry with bitter beans? the fish was ok and the bitter beans werent that bitter but the flavor was definely different than thai curry. ong choy with shrimp sauce My favorite vegetable along with my favorite flavoring. The shrimp sauce was less than my likeing but still a good dish. Overall: My first time eating Indonesian and it was a memorable one. Very unique dishes and friendly service. Highly recommended.

Definitely a new favorite place. There are hardly any Indonesian restaurants and the few there are the food just is not as good as my Oma's home made cooking but Sate House is the first place I've tried in years that I liked the food. The peanut sauce is the perfect flavor and the lamb sate is very tender. My favorite Indonesian dish has always been Bakmi Goreng and they have one of the best I've ever tried. If you have never tried Indonesian food it's mainly a cross between Chinese & Thai food and I highly recommend this place.

Indonesian Food...? Don't judge by the title, that this review will be all to horrible. Quite the opposite. This place would get a nearly perfect score if it wasn't for one particular factor, there is no real determination on the style of food this place is. Sure, the front of the store says Indonesian B.B.Q. , but you get the combination of different Oriental styles. I won't claim to be a specialist on Indonesian Food...actually I don't know squat about Indonesian food. I just don't like being mislead. It's like walking into a store that says Car Mechanic and realizing it's a car wash service... Okay, bad analogy. But you get what I mean. Anyways, that's the only bad thing about this place I have to say. However, if you have no Flippin clue on the difference between oriental food (Ha...there was a racist pun in that sentence) and just like good eats. This place definitely will accentuate the taste buds inside your stomach lining. Tip for people new to this kind of food, or first timers, ask the wait staff there and they will definitely create help create a meal that will satisfy your needs. They even prevented us from over-ordering, which was cool on their part. Don't dismiss the other reviews, definitely order the Satay. Satay is basically meat on a stick that has been cooked quickly in high heat to conserve the juices in the meat and then served with several sauces. In my opinion, a good Satay is not to dry. Usually, that's not a problem due to the marinating process, but you'd be surprised how easy it is to botch it. This place, doesn't botch it. There was a good amount of juices and fat to keep each piece moist and tender. Recommendation: The Lamb Satay. Usually, lamb has a gamey taste, but the marinade they use at Satay house give it an creamy almost yogurt like flavor. Another dish I had, I can't remember for the life of me...but it's picture 47 on the Yelp page. Since they don't have pictures on the menus there, we kinda just pulled it up on the iPhone and showed it to the waiters. To describe it, it is a deep fried fish fillet covered in some kind of dark clumpy textured sauce with curry leaves. Yeah, doesn't sound appetizing and doesn't look it either. But it was absolutely delicious in a surprising way. Definitely try one of their mixed jelly drinks, the will help clean your palette after each overwhelming flavorful dish (I say overwhelming in the best way possible) Also, if you want to order rice, I don't recommend getting plain white rice....because, well....it's plain. It will only dilute the flavor of the dishes. Instead, compliment them with something like their fried rice. Usually I like the over easy egg on rice to be still liquid, to crack over the rice, but this was was well done. You can make the choice on egg or not. This place is surely something for those who aren't afraid of new dishes. If you are someone who won't try something cause of how it looks...there is a Burger King down the street. For others, it's an adventure for your taste buds. Also, Cash Only. Unless you want to leave a friend behind for collateral while you run to the ATM. 4.5/5 (Quality) 3/5 (Innovation) 5/5 (Taste) 4.5/5 (Price) 4/5 (Environment)

Just like my Mama's authentic Indonesian cooking. I came out here twice in one week. I am an Indo and I grew up eating Indonesian food, this place is yummy. The service was very friendly and prompt. The restaurant is small and quiet, nothing spectacular, but the food is delicious. The only thing CASH ONLY! It's ok I have to say it is worth it!

overall... friendly service and good food! i always order the fried rice and sate on every visit, both dishes are consistently done each time i've been here. usually i mix it up between tripe or lamb fried rice. lamb sate is a must try here, but i also like their chicken sate. i've tried several of other dishes here... their fried noodle and sweet sour fish remind me of the ones i used to eat in indonesia. nasi bungkus, a weekend only item, is also popular. unfortunately, i'm not a big fan of it. too bad sate house is a little out of the way from where i live, otherwise i would be here more often. one last thing, this review is solely based on my experience on the service and food. the interior and decor is nothing to rave about... the warm greeting and yummy food is what matters to me when i go here. Very good service, friendly owner. He helped me out with suggesting dishes and they were all delicious. Didn't try the pork satay but definitely coming back to try it. Recommend the curry and Indonesian fried rice dishes. They aren't as spicy as he warned me they would be but maybe most people find his dishes spicy. All very delicious!!

Just visited for lunch and took my mum. Definite hole-in-the-wall needing a few updates! What's confusing is where the restaurant is situated. I thought it was in the Albertson's plaza or perhaps the plaza across the street -Nope! It's slightly southbound on Nogales St. then left on Francessa Dr. The place is located in the corner of the small shopping plaza. Anyway, back to my review! We ordered a Fish Filet Curry, Indonesian Fried Rice, and Pork Satay (since all the Yelpers appear to be raving about it) delicious and flavorful!! I can't say I've tried Indonesian food in LA, this was really tasty. Would I visit again? Yes, for sure! Incidentally, the manager was very nice and personable too, he came up to our table and had a good long conversation with us. All in all, fantastic place to dine for lunch, dinner, or order a take-out. This is a cash only place, so don't forget to bring ya bills! One last thing, the restrooms were spotless! I believe that tells you a lot about their establishment, specially their kitchen!

Hidden away in the corner of a small complex, Sate House is a little hard to find, but once you do you won't be disappointed. Sate House seems to be a family run restaurant, and the owner/host is extremely friendly and helpful. Not being too familiar with Indonesian food, we asked for some recommendations the first time we went and everything was excellent. The fried fish with belado sauce is definitely my favorite dish -- chunks of battered and fried fish filet in an amazing sweet and salty dark sauce. The outside is perfectly crisp and golden brown, the inside moist and soft. They're also probably most known for their sate. Both the pork and chicken varieties are both very tender and flavorful, but not as good as the fish! They also have several decent fried rice dishes; unfortunately I don't remember which. The restaurant was fairly empty both times that I went, so I really hope they don't go out of business. Please help them out and try this place! With such excellent Yelp reviews and with so few Indonesian restaurants, it'd be a shame if they weren't around. Just try the fried fish with belado sauce and you'll be hooked!

The BBQ here is as good as you can expect from anywhere. The Pork Satay is juicy and the peanut/soy sauce is a very good compliment. I tend to eat a lot and this meal was very filling. If you like Thai food, I definitely recommend to give this place a try. The owners are genuinely friendly and hard-working.

Oh My Gosh!! Sooooo delicious! I love chicken satay and the satay here is probably the best I've ever had. I also tried the fried rice and ice kachang. Everything is very reasonable priced (chicken sate ~$6.75, fried rice ~$7) and the owners/servers are really friendly and helpful!

The pork sate breaks the scale of deliciousness! It definitely goes on my personal "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" list. Worthy of being featured on a food show. The chef deserves to be recognized. We almost didn't get a chance to eat here. It's a family restaurant, hidden away in a mini corner strip mall in seemingly quiet neighborhood. It took my friends and I at least 3 stops, 2 detours, and 4 U-turns to find this place. We hadn't really tried Indonesian-style food before, so we walked in without much expectations. The host/owner greeted us with much warmth and was very helpful in offering good suggestions. There was this dish we ordered, I don't remember the exact name (something bagus...), it was wrapped in leaves. The inside contained rice, meat, vermicelli, green beans, an egg, taro and spices. The dish was ethnically unique, very flavorful and satisfying. A must try if you are in the area and if you don't find anything in Rowland Heights that appeal to you.

My bf took me here on our first date and maybe it was the first date, maybe it was the food--maybe a combination of both but I really really enjoyed it. The food is absolutely delicious, the meats are tender, well-seasoned and the sauces are rich and perfectly paired. It is such an unassuming family spot, you can really tell that the family that runs this place cares about their food and business. My bf's family are part Indo and this is the spot that they frequent.

FAVORITE: Chicken Satay BEWARE: Cash only & level 1 spicy is pretty spicy! My friend and i came by here for lunch one day not expecting how delicious it would be. We took one look at the menu and were kind of lost at all their names. Moments later the server came over and offered us help, he recommended customer favorites and was extremely helpful!! the food reminded us of home a little...the chicken satay was tender and the peanut sauce was pretty good!! the combination fried rice was pretty good and very spicy, although i wish the meat they used was better quality. however the price of everything isn't too bad, so can't complain too much ps. i hear a rumor that they precook their food and microwave it... which is a boo

I work across the street from this place for over 2 years now and I had no idea that this place is one of the best indonesian foods I've ever eaten at. The sate chicken is so juicy and favorable. It's honestly better then Lots of other places that are higher end restaurants and it's much cheaper too. Love this place and love their house special fried rice as well. Mmmmm.... Writing about it makes me hungry!!!

I ordered fish with balado sauce -- fried fish filet with way too sweet sauce. Badly fried, plus empty shells with no fish inside. Taste is initially blandly mediocre but, by the time you finish the plate, the sweetness gets sickening. The lady who waited was very nice, but charging a dollar for hot tea, another dollar for rice was ridiculous -- the total price, plus tip, coming to $12, for which you can get a far more decent fish plate and portion even at Sizzler's!

Con: CASH ONLY! my friend had to run to the nearest ATM leaving me in the restaurant by myself coz he had no cash on him. SUCKS. I KNOW. Pro: Very nice and helpful people in there! Would tell you their today specials and favorites etc.. I ordered: 1. Sate Lamb with Lontong side. It was good, they grilled it right. I just wished it was goat meat as it was intended to be, but i'm not complaining. 2. Ayam kecap pedas with rice. It was so good, it reminded me of Indo. Meaning, it was THAT good. 3. their sambal just hit the right spot. I would totally recommend this restaurant! I just wish they would take plastic for next time -__-;; for those people who do not carry cash in their pockets.

Truly enjoyed the wide selection of dishes that they offer, especially the variety of satays. I relived a lot of the flavors I was accustomed to growing up and being able to share them with my kids is satisfying. When I can't get to the Indonesian Outdoor BBQ (in Duarte) on Saturdays, the Sate House will satisfy my taste buds.

Ok, when I walked into Sate House, I was terrified. There was no one in there and I'm usually on the popular train instead of the hole in the wall train. Anyway, the owner was super nice. We ordered drinks (no refills, but that's ok) Between me and my friend we ordered three dishes, boy was that plenty! We got fried rice, pork sate, and this fried fish filet dish in a sweet and sour sauce. All yummy. So despite my apprehension on first arrival I was very satisfied with this place. :)

Great little mom and pop place. Delicious food, generous portions, and reasonable prices. We try to stop by whenever we are in the area. The banana leaf wrapped rice with chicken, pork, and beef is the special on weekends and a must try! The pork Satay is another must try! Cash only

The first time that I went I noticed that they only have one waiter. The restaurant only 3 or 4 other small parties (less than 5) and the waiter had a hard time serving all of us. It took a while for him to get to us and take our order. The food was okay. We ordered what was recommended to us, which was a fried rice, fried fish, beef sate and chicken curry. Nothing really stood out to me. I would go again to give it another chance or if someone wanted to give the place a try.

The owners are very gracious, hence the three stars. The food is too grissily. You use to be able to rely on yelp's ratings. The food is around two stars.

If I tell you that I have been going to this place since 1998, you'll think that I was kidding around. The fact of the matter is, I have been going to this place since 1998. There are quite a few indonesian restaurant in Los Angeles County, but only some that would actually stand up and stayed through the tough economy. Indonesian restaurant isn't as famous as Thai or Chinese food. Aside from the unknown country the location is usually far from the typical food location. Sate House is located about 20 min from any freeway which make the place undesirable to most people and appealing only to the local eateries. The place itself is within a very small shopping center with only a few shops (convenience store, Philippine bakery, a video rental, a japanese restaurant and I think a salon). The food is always fresh, well seasoned and bring back memories of the food back in Indonesia. Everytime I pass by nogales street coming down from 10 freeway, I made sure to stop by Sate House and order their famous Lamb fried rice. I would also instantly get additional order from a couple of my close friends requesting the same dish or one of their many selections. The service is very good, the owner is very friendly, and the foods are great. The only drawback is because of the location of the restaurant. Overall, I will never get tired of ordering Sate House Lamb fried rice. I will definitely come again in the near future.

This is definitely a hole in the wall gem. My husband is Indonesian and he said this is the most authentic Indonesian food. The satay is the best, chicken, beef, pork, try them all. The owner/server is very friendly and helpful. I really enjoy their food.

Found Sate House on Yelp. Just went there for lunch. My wife is vegetarian until her Doctors let her eat meat again, so we asked for a little guidance. She got the dish called Gado Gado, vegetables with the peanut sauce, we shared vegetartian style Indonesian noodles, and I got the lamb sate. All ordered mild but I put a bit of the chili paste on my portions. It was delicious. We heartily recommend the noodles. The lamb definately tasted like lamb, nicely grilled, and the peanut/soy sauce was wonderful. The meat was cut in bite size pieces, which I loved, but had a bit more fat than I would have liked. Service was fast and polite, food was hot and tasty, water glasses refilled repeatedly. What else could you ask for? Bring your cash but you shouldn't need a fortune.

This place is in a small strip mall all the way in the corner. It can be hard to find. Chicken Sate, sambal something with fish and tofu, Indonesian fried noodles with shrimp and beef, and mutton soup. I enjoyed everything except the Indonesian fried noodles; nothing wrong with it just not my preference. Next time I'll try the Indonesian fried rice. Mutton soup was surprisingly good, I wish they add some rice noodle or cellophane noodles to it to soak up the flavor; but that wouldn't be Indonesian I guess.

Went here with co-workers. I found this place on Yelp, thanks guys! I never experienced Indonesian food, but I must say it's finger lickin' good! We tried the chicken and pork satay, yummy..also had fried rice, some rib dish, and a noodle dish. Definately get recommendations from the friendly waiter/owner. I was not disappointed. I wish there was one closer to where we live.

I got to know the owner a little bit, and at first he thought I was Indonesian... I get mixed for different ethnicities all the time though. Anyway, friendly guy he actually lives right by me... I like how when I went here, he already knew that I didn't know what to get. I guess I was the only person along with a friend in the joint so he helped us order step by step. Anyway I ordered the the beef sate, some spicy fried rice, and some other spicy dish (I forget what it was)... Anyway yeah, lovely service. Try the watermelon drink. Really good.

As an Indonesian, I definitely miss Indo food... Sate House, so far, is the best indo restaurant I know in California. I would give it 5 star if only the parking is more friendly and I don't have to drive 20 miles every time I want "es cendol". Anyway, I love their "es cendol".... The best one is Sate Kambing !! Really Delicious..... The owner is really nice... makes me feel like I am in my own house... Can't wait to come again soon...

pretty tasty little joint.. but don't expect gourmet, this is as home cooking as it gets!! (although i've never had indonesian home cooked food) but the type of food and the vibe of the restaurant is very "mom's cooking" in my opinion i love when indonesian food has the rice, meats and sauce wrapped in the banana leaf..(particularly delicious at simpang asia in la) unfortunately i don't know what it's called but i think its posted on the wall.. and the waiter is REALLY nice., super helpful!! so i'm sure you could always ask! some of you out there may be thinking.. WOAH WOAH i'm not that adventurous.. DONT WORRY there's something for you too!! good ol' sate chicken! can't go wrong. and its pretty dern good here!! something about it.. more flavor i suppose!! but you get six on a plate with peanut sauce.. yum!! portions are good here and not too expensive.. we split the chicken and other dish amongst three girls and were FULL DONT FORGET CASH ONLY

I've been to the Sate' house many times. It's easily one of the best indo joints on the west coast. (my mom's was the best) I should know.. I grew up on indo food! - My mom was the chef and my parents owned several indonesian restaurants in the 70's and 80's in Huntington/Newport beach, Ca. The food and the people are the best. It's kid friendly and It's not fancy. It's very reflective of the indonesian culture itself.. humble, good and priced right. If you don't order the pork sate' you need to be slapped!

INDO...what...... PORK SATE PORK SATAY PORK SATE PORK YEAH PRO SERVICE is excellent although English is limited. FOOD is impressive and spicy!!!!! PORK SATE incredible....get it PRICE is low yet PORTIONS are large CONS Out of the way and no ambiance or charm (It's a sit and eat place) PORK SATE is amazing crispy chard and succulent with a good peanut sauce dip. I'm still thinking about it. I have no ideal what part they used or how they marinated it but try it its the best around. FRIED RICE Spicy and pungent with crispy shallots on top. and you get shrimp and chicken not just one or the other. CURRY is Indonesian curry so its not as pungent or spicy but i prefer this type of curry over the more robust Indian curries or the sweeter Japanese curries.

Had a family dinner here last night and though the restaurant is small, the atmosphere was warm like family cooking and the food was sooo good. If you're Chinese, try speaking to the the staff in either Cantonese or Mandarin and he will hold a good conversation with you in either language. Loved the mutton soup (very strong flavors, lamb meat very tender), beef rendang (flavorful and tender meat), fried fish with chili sauce, chicken sate, BBQ chicken in coconut sauce (loved the charred taste), and a vegetable dish with tofu. We continued to order extra rice to scoop up the sauces. Dessert here were also very good like the es cendol (shaved ice drink w/ cendol, jellies, avocado). And if you're a durian lover, then order their homemade durian ice cream. It truly captures the taste of durians. Note: Restaurant is Cash only and located in a plaza.

I'm sorry, maybe I order the wrong dishes but this place was on the verge of being horrible. I mean, I couldn't finish my plate. I felt uneasy about the freshness of the food (one of the dishes had a metalic after-taste and extremely old-fishy aroma)...as if some of the dishes weren't fresh and ultimately hazardous to my heath, resulting to me saying the unspoken phrase, "I'll pass." I know i wasn't the only one with this opinion, my fellow food lover also wasn't pleased with this place... I hate giving places bad reviews, but I also hate being misinformed on yelp, thinking that I'm going to a excellent 41/2 star restaurant, only to end up disappointed in the end. Perhaps I'm not being fair, I've experience excellent authentic Indo food before...resulting to my high expectations. The staff is friendly, the prices were cheap, and this quaint restaurant has a nice family ambiance too...unfortunately swallowing the food felt like swallowing sand. sorry.

AYE! Here I am trying to catch up with my YELP reviews...I am sorry to say that I have fallen behind the last month or so. Dined here about 6 weeks ago and what really sticks out of my head from this place was the warm welcoming we received from our server when we arrived. Our server was very friendly and helpful. We had never tried Indonesian food and he helped us pick a couple of items on the menu which was fantastic. I don't remember all the names of the dishes we ordered but they were all really delicious! The pork satay was amazing!!!! My hubby and BFF both were really impressed by this as it was tender, juicy and flavorful. The peanut sauce it came with was better than any peanut sauce we have ever tried at any Thai restaurant. It was FANTASTIC! I am trying to remember the names of the other dishes we had and I feel so bad as I don't remember them. But it was a fried rice dish and a chicken dish and both were excellent. Sorry folks, for not remembering the names, as it has been a while. I will be sure that I will update this review once I make a return back to this restaurant. And believe me I will be back! :)

Satay was good. Ask server for what's good. He will tell you if it's recommended or not. Decent prices. Small place, food was different than what I would imagine something that comes out of a sate house. Not Thai yellow curry style. Good though!

1 dish, repeat after me: nasi goreng babat....that is all you need to know. Although the chicken satay is also good. I actually prefer satay fong or kedai nikmat satay better especially the pork satay.

we walked in, nobody greeted us or seated us, we seated ourselves! it was about 10 mins later, that we decided to get our own menu, that's when someone greeted us. Although, the man apologized several times, that is inexcusable on service. This place is also very old and beaten up. The price is good for the food you get. The food is good, just the service is bad. If it wasnt for that, It would of gotten a 5 star.

First time here last weekend. We got: nasi campur - came with a bunch of side dishes (chicken, tempe, some kinda veggies) - B+, may/may not order again chicken satay - A+, definetely will order again in the future ayam bali- C, not really a fan. medium spice, but it was super spicy, and chicken was really dry bakmi goreng - A, most likely will order again We're not from the area so it was a bit difficult for us to find. It's located in a corner of a very small plaza; video store next door. No problem with parking, plenty of space. Service: excellent. The owner dude speaks Indonesian, Mandarin and Cantonese. Tried to speak to us in all three languages before he gave up after realizing it was pointless. When we came in, he asked if we needed help choosing from the extensive menu. Answered all of our questions patiently. Menu selection: a lot of choices for decent price. We had a hard time deciding what we wanted; everything sounded so good. This is totally random, but I also judge restaurants by the cleanliness of their bathroom. It's probably one of the cleanest Asian restaurant bathrooms I've been to. A lot of mom & pop Asian places I've been too have really dirty bathrooms, so it was a nice surprise to come in to a nice, clean bathroom. As mentioned by others, they only accept cash. Thank God for Yelp, we were prepared before we went. We usually don't carry cash. We would be visiting more if we lived close by, especially for the satay. We'll definetely be back next time we're in the area.

Probably the best meal I have had in a very long time! Thanks to Sate House, Indonesian Cuisine is one of my favorite types of food! This place is delicious, the owners are extremely nice and genuine, and the prices are excellent. They did sway me to order medium rather than spicy because they thought I couldn't handle spicy, but next time i'll order spicy. We ordered the chicken satay, fried rice, noodle dish, and a deep fried chicken with Indonesian sauce (sorry, i forgot the names but they were all recommendations from the owner). All were so good. I didn't want to stop eating. The chicken satay was one of the best i have ever had. The other fried chicken dish that was on the wall and that was recommended didn't sound too appealing as he descibed it but I didn't want to offend him by not picking it; and i am surely glad i did pick it because it had a nice sweet/spicy sauce and the chicken strips were fried just right. This place is not close to where I live but it's worth the drive. It's located in a small strip mall and is a no frills place, but the food will blow your mind! and the owners make it all that more rewarding to return!

delicious and inexpensive! Can't go wrong with anything you order here. We're not very familiar with some of the dishes but the owner will always explain them and make suggestions. Been here maybe 5 or 6 times, each with a different dish.. ALL have been amazing.

great hole in the wall place to try out! i never tried indonesian food but wow i love their curry here, it was pretty spicy, but homey.. literally comfort food, it went well with their lamb satay which the server recommended. the owners here are so sweet & friendly :) definitely coming back again! :D

Small hole-in-the-wall Indonesian restaurant in the strip mall across the street from Alamo Car Wash and in the same strip mall with Kalahi Bakery. There are 2 things that I ALWAYS order at Sate House.1) The Nasi Goreng is FULL of flavor, tangy and spicy. I think they use their belacan sauce (chili with shrimp paste). 2) Sate (I personally like the pork sate), the sate is thick cut and marinated really well, when it comes to you off the grill, and you bite into it, its so moist and juicy. They serve the sate with a sweet peanut dipping sauce and pickled vegetables. You can choose to order 5 sates with 1 lontong (rice cake) or 6 sates with no lontong. This restaurant is 5 minutes from my house and the owner, Mr. Cheung is always so cheeful, friendly, and chatty. Remember to bring your cash, CASH ONLY!

Tried it for the first time due to the great yelp reviews. Big let down. Tried the Pork Sate everyone was raving about. Bite after bite was full of pork fat, hardly any meat on the skewers. Portions were small, barely got me full, but maybe because I was spitting up most of the pork fat I was trying to avoid. Service was disappointing. One server on duty and he was busy watching TV 90% of the time. He had his backed turned and never came back to check on us or refill our water. Not going back. Thumbs down.

Wow. This place is an Indonesian experience after my own heart. Don't let the humble appearance deceive you folks, underneath it all lies a passionate, take charge, complex juxtaposition of spices and flavor that will leave you breathless and panting for more. The owners are extremely friendly and very eager to help you embark on what is sure to be an unforgettable notch on your dining table post. Lamb fried rice was great and like any great tease, left me craving more. The main attraction however, was their sate. I had pork this time and I was instantly in love, or in lust. Who can tell the difference these days. Regardless I am now a repeat paying client. A kabob of meat after my own heart, to be exact.

There have been alot of Indonesian restaurants I have been to in the past, but I am proud to say that Sate House is my favorite authentic style home style food that I have ever had. The owner is a good man and his wife also treat the guest with great service and smiles. He will also make great suggestions on new plates or food choices based on personal preference to taste categories. Its a must for anybody in town or wanting an amazing Indonesian dining experience.

I visited Cali and my cousin took me to this place. She asked me if I ever had Indonesian food and I said no. They've been going to this place a lot. They know the owner. He's really friendly. This is a small place but the atmosphere is comforting. They ordered for me. I had the noodles and chicken satay. That was delish! It wasn't overcooked or undercooked. One of the dishes though I think it was some sort of pork dish, I didn't care for. It really didn't have any taste. But everything else was tasteful. Don't forget they only take cash. So come prepared and make it rain. LOL

Awesome food. I have gotten spoiled by decades of great Indo food, Sadly there is nothing like htis near my home, so every time I am in Southern California this is the place to get my fix of Nasi Rames, Satay, Rendang, Rujak, Gado Gado, and more... Writing this is making me hungry again...

I lived in Indo for two years, and this is as close as it gets to authentic Jakarta style. Soup- Soto Ayam -- this is perfect!!! sate- of course is very good-- be sure to specify "tanpa kulit" (tahn-pa, kool-it) if you don't like fat and skin. Try the lontong, not the rice when you order sate for a real authentic experience. Its one of the few places that offer it. down sides-- no nasi uduk, tahu isi, or lemper and cash only! More variety is available at Duarte Inn on Saturdays. Sapi rendang, nasi uduk and tahu isi to DIE FOR... and lots and lots of teh botol.

I am impress how they can stay in business in an isolated plaza. Restaurants beside them goes out of business every so often. They've been there forever. One day i decided to give it a shot and I am pleasantly surprised! Their mee goreng (fried noodle) / nasi goreng (fried rice) is real good. Little oily but good! Add their special chili shrimp paste if you like spice. Ask for recommendation for their appetizer, i think it's number 34 or 35, it's pretty good. Pork Sate and Chicken sate is good too! Give it a shot! Their rating is this high for a reason!

My husband is Indonesian and I've been to Indonesia twice and love Indonesia food. We came here last night for dinner after reading all the great yelp reviews. Here's what I think of Sate House: - Ambiance: 2 stars. It's located in a remote and small complex in Walnut. The restaurant has half booths and half regular tables. The furniture is quite old. - Customer Service: 5 stars. The guy who takes your order is also the owner of the restaurant and he is very pleasant and friendly. Ok, I don't care about the ambiance and customer service because didn't we go there for the FOOD?!?! Here are the dishes we had last night: 1) Pork Satay ($6.95): 3 stars. They came out pipping hot but they were too fatty and a bit bland. If you want better satays, I suggest you go to Satay Fong in West Covina and Heidy's in Duarte Inn. 2) Nasi Goreng with Chicken ($6.95): 5 stars. Delicious fried rice with an egg and fried shallots on top! Very authentic. 3) Shrimp with pete and tofu ($7.50): 5 stars. We ordered this dish medium spicy and it came out perfectly. 4) BBQ Chicken with Bali Sauce ($6.95): 3 stars. They first grilled the chicken and then pour the bali sauce on top. Only OK dish. 5) Es Campur ($2.95). 4 stars. This icy drink comes with shredded coconut, grass jelly and two longons. 6) Es Teler ($3.95). 4 stars. This icy drink comes with a few different types of jelly, grass jelly, avocado, etc. Very solid drink. Overall, we were very happy with our meal. The owners are very nice people and both husband and wife came out to chat with us. They speak Indonesian, English, Mandarin and Cantonese! It was quite funny to converse with them in multiple languages. What I LOVE most about Sate House include: 1) CHEAP: We've been to over ten Indonesian restaurants in LA and OC and Sate House is probably one of the cheapest we've found and 2) LARGE PORTIONS! *** Cash only!

I've never tried Indonesian food before and it was fantastic! I ordered what was popular by the yelpers the shrimp and tofu curry, Nasi Goreng and the fried rice. It was all yummy. I wanted to order the satay but I was encourage not to eat it to go. The owner told me that especially if its my first time its best to eat the satay at the restaurant. Because its best eaten right away. So I can't wait to go back and try the satay!

never had indonesian food before, so decided to try this place with some friends. we ordered the calamari, fried rice, pork satay, and fried chicken. the fried rice was amazinggggggg and perfectly spicy [we got medium]. the pork satay was juicy and tender and the peanut sauce was slightly sweet to counter the savory pork. the calamari was very lightly fried and they didnt use too much batter [i hate when its heavily fried], and served with chopped peppers to add a kick. the owner was super friendly and helped us order by suggesting dishes. definitely a mom and pop place where they actually care about your business and if you enjoy the food. i'm excited to return to try other dishes here.

I went here for the first time last week, and I loved it. It's a small, family-owned restaurant and they cook great, home-style, classic Indonesian dishes. Very decent/cheap prices, and huge portions. The food is well seasoned and authentic. Menu items are listed in the native language but they have english descriptions of the dishes. Yay for the bf! Again, huge servings. My boyfriend can usually wolf down 1 1/2 servings at your typical asian restaurant, but he couldn't down 3/4 of the Nasi Goreng (fried rice) here. So there is always food to bring home! I had the Sup Kambing (lamb stew/soup). I love mutton and this satisfied my craving (I hadn't eaten it in 5 years). The manager/server was very personable and chit-chatted with us and took into great consideration what he thought we could and could not 'handle'. My bf wanted his fried rice spicy with 'pate' (eventhough he didn't have a clue what it was) but the owner said 1)the pate was a 'stinky paste' which most non-Indonesians don't really like and 2)he'd just give him a 'medium spicy'. Thank goodness, because the medium was pretty darn spicy (and I'm the kind that loads all my dishes with hot sauce). Great home cooked food, good service, personable staff, cheap, huge servings - I go home happy! :) If you're not Indonesian(I'm not) or are unfamiliar with the food - just give it a try! Cheap and there's something for everyone. I can't wait to try out the other dishes on the menu. [edit] went back on 1/19 - omg, the chicken sate was DELICIOUS! So moist, tender and tasty. The Nasi Rames was excellent, too.

Yes, CASH only. We've come back twice - love supporting mom & pop eateries cooking their heart in their many dishes. Some of the most tender & tasty satay sticks, the fish with the balado sauce, nasi goreng. And the home-made durian ice cream is the best I've had. Flavors are all distinct, have that home-cooked taste. PS: The comments made about the owner asking if one is Chinese is true and hilarious. We are, so it helps.

I think for an Indonesian restaurant, this is as good as it gets. The food has a home made feel. Chicken Satay very good. Doesn't feel like there's MSG in it. The fish is also good here. Compared to other Indonesian restaurants, this feels more authentic. Better than the one on Yes Plaza.

I have never eaten Indonesian food before so I was very excited to eat at the Sate House. The owner was very friendly! He noticed that my husband and I had no idea what to order, so he took the time to help us out. We finally decided on the Pork Sate, which I highly recommend, the #27, which was a Shrimp, tofu, and veggies in Curry sauce, the noodles, and the Calamari!!! All of the dishes were very tasty. Overall, I had a great experience at the Sate House. I can't wait to eat there again!!

my first real indonesian food experience. it's literally a hole in the wall in a small plaza, so keep your eyes peeled to the right when driving up nogales. its a nice quiet restaurant. I wish I remembered what the name of our appetizer was, but it was like croquettes and was amazing. the male waiter recommended it. we got the pork satay and #27 curry (shrimp veggie tofu). the pork satay was BOMBBBB, i've had it at banana bay and some other places, but by FAR this was the most memorable pork satay experience. the #27 curry, we ordered with 0 spice because my date cant really handle spicy food. to my surprise, it was still tasty! our bill was super cheap, like $25-30? we were very satisfied and full. great value, really friendly service. he kept checking up on us throughout. and very yummy food! oh. CASH ONLY!!!!!!

The owner of this restaurant is very nice. He even suggested dishes that he thought we would enjoy. The appetizer dishes come with 2. The owner suggested two dishes and let us get one of each. One resoles and one kroket. One had chicken and the other has mashed potatoes with some other ingredients wrapped and fried. The sauce for both is the same..kind of a sweet and tangy sauce. Pretty good. Next, the regular sate..it's listed on the entree section of the menu; however, it only comes with 6 thin skewers. In my opinion, it was more of an appetizer. You can choose between chicken, beef, pork, and lamb. We had the chicken; it was very juicy and come with a peanuty-ish sauce. Delish! The main dish he suggested for me and my boyfriend to share was a special, nasi bungkus. It is rice, noodles, beef, chicken, green beans, and an egg wrapped in a banana leaf. The flavors vary depending on what you're eating..I think you're supposed to mix the whole thing though. It was somewhat plain but still good. Also, compared to the JUIcY chicken skewers we had earlier, the chicken in the special was very dry. Overall, this restaurant is a good place if you want to try something new and different.

The food is delicious here! It reminds me of home cooked food, although I have no idea what a homemade Indonesian meal tastes like. We get the fried rice with egg, fried noodles, salt and pepper squid, and pork satay with peanut sauce. man oh man. And to top it off they have the nicest people serving it :)

I like this restaurant. Everything that we have had here has been tasty with the exception of the chicken sate, which was dry and overcooked. The owner is super friendly. The fried rice, noodle dishes, and meat dishes are all tasty. The fried fish is very good. The food here tends to be on the spicy side which I love. I wish that there were more Indonesian restaurants around. I plan on going back.

I've enjoyed eating at the Satay House several times and the food seems to get better with each visit. It's a small family run business and the service is really quite good. The grilled chicken and pork satay is the best,. They have a garlic and pepper fried sqiuid and fried fish thats just great.

I've never had Indonesian food before and saw this place in my searching so I decided to try it out. I live in Pomona so this place was really close to my house. It took a little bit of looking but my boyfriend and I found the place and walked right in. Its a small restaurant with a few booths and tables. We were greeted by an older man that was very enthusiastic to help us in ordering our meal. We started with an appetizer that I wish I could remember the name of that was suggested by our waiter. It was like a potato dumpling filled with chicken. All I can say is that it was Delicious. We then moved onto to our entrees that we shared. We ordered the beef satay that came with a thick peanut sauce and something else which I also can't remember the name of that consisted of shrimp and tofu in a kind of curry sauce with a side of rice. The food here was amazing. We weren't expecting too much from the view of the restaurant but this is definitely a hole in the wall gem.

eh...not my favorite.. what got me sick was the nasi bankgus or so i remembered...it was a rice dish wrapped in banana leaf....it has an appealing flavor but what got me sick were the chunks of what looked like chicken that had a powdery texture of what i think would taste like brain. other than that service is great. the waiter spoke mandarin and indonesian. other than the downer..kroket was delicious and SATE was really juicy.

My husband decided to take me here since I bothered him with yelpers review on this place. It's bit far from where i live and kinda in a residential neighboorhood, but we decided to just try it. I finally found indo restaurant that's really authentic and price is very reasonable. We ordered Sate Ayam (chicken satay), Nasi Rames, and Nasi Goreng. Everything was delicious and i'm indo myself and to me it tastes like home. The owner was nice enough to give me recommendation on which one tastes better than the others. I'll be coming back here. Too bad they don't have to go menu so i can phone in before going there. Their chilli sauce (sambal terasi) was good too, i wanted to take it home with me. Price is definitely very reasonable for the amount of food you get.

This is probably only the third Indonesian restaurant I've been to so I am, by no, means, an Indonesian food expert. However, I know what I like and what is tasty so 5 stars Sate House gets. I always get nasi goreng and the beef sate is to live for. They also have this spicy, garlicy fried shrimp which is very good. The owner is always really nice, very chatty, and helpful if you aren't to familiar with the food.

First time here. Decent size but got crowded so fast during off hour times (1:30 pm for lunch is kinda late, we thought) So we thought this must be good!! We could not wait. We have a little one so were worried if the food will be too spicy for her. Ordered 1) Nasi Goreng (you can choose level of spice. We chose medium and it was spicy enough that we did not even give to our baby). This rice is great! So savory and has fried shallots, egg, shrimp, pickled veges. Love it. We paired it with (2) Chicken Satay. This is so good we had to give to our baby as a meal. It was so soft and tender I thought it was fat! It is simply wonderful. The seasoning is great. I don't like the dipping sauce though. Not enough savory-ness to match with the chicken itself. The chicken drowns out the peanuty tasting dressing. It was better not to have the dressing at all. We also ordered the (3) Beef Rendang which is too wet for us. Taste more like beef stew in lots of gravy. I have tried Penang, Malaysian beef rendang that is more dry and flavorful. Finally we ordered (4) Nasi Kuning, yellow coconut rice that comes with chicken, veges, tofu, egg. This was the worse dish since the spices and gravy used really did not balance out with the coconut yellow rice. The rice was dry on top too. The service was great. The guy helping us was so nice and accommodating. He and only one more other lady ran the whole show! Must be a family own business. But it is a place to try again. Just remember CASH ONLY Wonderful thing is that it is next to a phillipino bakery and we always order the Turon (60cents each) and donuts (3 for $1) for dessert.

We tried the chicken, beef and pork satays, shrimp fried rice, fried squid and some fish with a sauce. I preferred the chicken satay, my wife liked the pork. All the food was really good, except we both felt the fried rice had too much of a fishy taste, next time we'll stick with the white rice. The staff here is very friendly and helpful, we're definitely coming back.

This is the first Indonesian restaurant that I've been to in So Cal that makes food like my Dutch Indonesian mother-in-law made. I recommend the Sambal Goreng Udang w/pete. It was amazing as was the Bami Goreng. The owner gives stellar service and is very friendly and obviously goes the distance with his customers. His place is clean! I highly recommend this restaurant for Indonesian food.

This place was okay - I was disappointed due to high expectations from all these high ratings Chicken satay was good, but it was nothing special. My mom could have done that with some korean BBQ sauce over the grill. The curry was okay, and tasted a lot like Thai. Bf enjoyed it more and said it was "the best food he has had in a while," but I wasn't particularly impressed... Waiter/waitresses were friendly and eager to tell us what to order. Overall just okay for me, but the Bf thought better!

My first time having Indonesian food! I didn't know what to order or expect, so they recommended a fried rice dish for me, which was really good. However, be forewarned that their food is spicy! I ordered mild, but it was still quite spicy for me. Also, there weren't too many veggie options, but enough for you pescatarians! :)

We probably would never have set foot in a place like Sate House, had it not been for the reviews on Yelp. That's one of the great things about this site...namely, opening up so many dining opportunities that would never have been there. Saturday night out, so where to eat? We decided on one of our "ethnic days" and heading out to find Indonesian food in the Rowland Heights area. A quick search led us here. Thank you fellow Yelpers for the spot-on reviews. To say it's tucked away is an understatement. It is literally TUCKED away in the corner of a non-descript neighborhood strip mall anchored by a liquor store on one end and a dingy video rental place on the other. From the outside, it didn't appear promising, but the LA County health inspector thought enough to grant them an A. Good enough for us. Now to figure out how to get inside. The restaurant is small and was about 20% full when we arrived, which wasn't too bad, since we were a bit early. We were greeted by what I'm assuming is the dad. He was very friendly and helpful with our selections. The menu had a fair amount of selections, with their satay as item #1. You can order chicken, beef, pork, or for an extra charge, lamb. We got the chicken. Next we ordered the Nasi Goreng (fried rice). I had asked him for the difference among the 4 different types of Nasi Goreng and he cheerfully described all of them, paying particular attention to the second Nasi, which appeared to be identical to the first one, with the exception of pete. Captain Obvious stepped in and begged the question, WTF is pete? Thank god it wasn't capitalized "Pete." No ingreditents with proper nouns in my fried rice! Hell no! Turns out pete is a "stinky bean" that's native to Indonesia and grows from a tree. Thanks, but I'll stick to the regular fried rice. He asked if we can take spicy food, and after answering in the affirmative, he recommended medium. Fair enough. You lead, we follow. We also ordered gado gado, which is a vegetarian dish with tofu, bean sprouts, cucumbers, and covered in a peanut sauce, and finally a dish the dad recommended, which was a spicy shrimp with tofu. I forgot what it was called. So, we're sitting back, chatting, and taking in the atmosphere and I'm thinking to myself...you know...it's going to be good times when you get a combination of people streaming in, mom cooking in the kitchen, dad hustling to seat people, take orders, bring out the water, and then helping to cook, and finally their daughter (?) serving and busing tables. Before getting to the food, I have to say something about the condiments. Aside from the usual soy sauce and chilli paste on the table, Sate House also had a belacan chilli, which has the heat from the chilli, but is also made with the shrimp paste common to Indonesian/Malaysian/Singaporean cooking that infuses the sauce with a delicious flavor very distinctive to the region. Definitely looking good here. Food arrives and we're magically transported to Indoheaven. Holy smokes! First off is the satay, which is flavorful, perfectly seasoned, moist, and oh so good. Best we've had in a while. The peanut sauce is a bit on the sweet side, but excellent nonetheless. The gado gado is similarly excellent and also a bit on the sweet side. The shrimp was very fresh and packed with flavor. Interestingly, this dish had the pete we tried to avoid with the Nasi. At first glance, it looked harmless. After all it's a bean. How bad could it be, right? It looked like a lima bean, but just a shade smaller than a fava bean. No big deal. Well, contrary to my overactive imagination, it wasn't quite as stinky as he had described. Rather, it had a unique flavor that wasn't bad, but...unique. I'm sorry this isn't a lot to work with, but it really isn't that bad. Try it if you come here. It's not something you'll see in most Indonesian restaurants. The bean added very slightly to the flavor of the dish, but I'm pretty sensitive to taste. Most people probably wouldn't pick it up. What was nice was the belacan which worked quite well with the sauce and the shrimp. Same with the nasi goreng, which was a generous portion and also packed with flavor. The belacan was a bit on the heavy side, but true to indonesian flavors. Excellent. The rice was spicy, so if you're not used to heat, I'd advise going mild. What a wonderful experience and well worth the 40 minute drive from Irvine. A very strong recommendation for solid, authentic Indonesian food that hasn't been dumbed down for western tastes. One last thing...bring cash. They don't accept credit cards.

It's a buncha rice, fried rice noodles, some green beans, tofu, grilled chicken wings, beef curry and a spicy egg all wrapped up in a big ass banana leaf. I'm sorry, but it all just tasted pretty mediocre. We barely ate half and I took the rest home. The owner noticed and apologized for the recommendation, I felt bad. So we ordered more food. PORK FRIED NOODLES yelp.com/biz_photos/sate… This was exactly what we were in the mood for. Perfectly cooked noodles, cabbage, onions, sprouts, tasty pork. so good. PORK FRIED RICE w FRIED EGG yelp.com/biz_photos/sate… For me, Christmas came early. Amazing fried rice with porkiness in every bite, topped with a beautiful fried egg. Are you fu*king kidding me!? The owner noticed that we devoured these last two dishes and he smiled and nodded approvingly. Bottom line? Skip the bungkus, stick with the PORK! Words to live by, my friends.

Ordered the Es taler drink, nasi bangkus, and fried noodles. No complaints! My mother loved the food and she's pretty picky. Overall the flavors were good!

Pork Sate and Nasi were good. Had a couple of fatty pieces of sate, but overall good and well-seasoned dishes. Friendly, fast, and attentive service. Will come again to try other dishes. We recommend trying mild first because mild was already spicy for us, and we usually order medium at most other restaurants.
