Remember Coco's in the 90s? This place feels JUST LIKE THAT. Waitresses all over the place that you can't help but run into, mushy booths that you want to snuggle down in, quick service and endless coffee with that little orange coaster cover if you get decaf...so many great childhood memories relived here. Food is good--don't make the mistake of ordering hashbrowns instead of the breakfast potatoes.

Freshly squeezed orange juice!!!??? Oh whatttt ??!!!! And I can totally get it served as a mimosa ($4.99)... even better!!! Mimosas are also served all day. Total plus and super delicious. I was totally hoping they would do bottomless mimosas but this is so not the place for that. This is a nice little diner aimed to served families. There was tons of little kids running around during my visit. The service is pretty attentive but the food took a bit longer than I thought to come out, it was super bowl Sunday though so I will give them a break for that. I had two little kids on my table which were getting a bit anxious waiting for their food. We asked the waitress for some color crayons so they could color their coloring sheet and none were provided. Oh well, no biggie, thank goodness for iPhone technology and games. As for the food, not too shabby. I ordered the mile high platter from their special menu ($10.25). It consisted of a biscuit at the bottom, topped with a sausage patty and then drenched with country gravy. I loved that I had more than enough gravy to go with the whole meal item. It had a side of has brown potatoes as well. The menu is pretty diner basic. Not sure if I would go back being that there wasn't anything else that caught my attention but over all, not a bad place if you're looking for a decent meal.

This used to be my favorite place to eat , but no more. The owner is firing people left and right. To bad the atmosphere has changed. With chris , the cook ,gone , I will no longer eat there . The food and service is getting worse there. The best cook they had is gone now. Service just sucks now. Not a nice place any more

Best fries (seasoned and great texture) great sandwiches. Nice host and waitress. Cute diner environment.

I used to go to this place all the time as a kid. I would wake myself up really early on every Saturday morning just so I can go with my parents. Now I have grew up and moved to a different city. Although I do not missed Turlock much, however, this restaurant that will always be in my memory.

This is the best diner I've been to in a long time. First of all the waitress was great. She put up with me while I changed my mind 3 times and she still took it with a smile. My breakfast was perfect! Eggs over easy, good quality bacon and potatoes, which were also very well seasoned and perfectly cooked. I had a short stack of pancakes on the side and was pleasantly surprised to find they used real butter and served it at the perfect temperature to melt and spread on your pancakes just right. Even their coffee was good. AJ's had diner-food down pat.

  • Michael M.

They've got diner food down! Service is top notch! Breakfast burrito? Yyyyuuuup! Better orange juice than grandma used to make, sorry grandma. And the chicken fried steak with gravy and over medium eggs with extra crisp in the hashies...I can't take it it's so good.

  • Liz M.

Their pancakes are so delicious; they taste homemade. Their orange juice is fresh and they're squeezing the oranges right in front of you! This place is the best in town for breakfast!!! Only bad thing is that their menu is not that big...

The outside of the restaurant was nice and clean. Entering we were greeted right away and sat shortly after. There was a ton of waitresses which is abnormal but very good for the customer. Our table was clean and the waitress came quickly a little too quickly since we didn't know the menu. But she was pleasant and gave us more time. We placed our orders I got a full order of biscuits and gravy my daughter got Mac n cheese with fries and hubby got the chucky b my food was very good and a ton of it. My daughter didn't like the fries very much but she's not used to seasoned fries. Hubby said his was good he asked for a side of salsa which they brought but he said next time he'll go without saying it was pretty salty. All in all the service was good very friendly staff. The food was pretty good better than Denny's. The food came out quick and hot. We will come again next time we're in town.

Breakfast at noon, what a treat! The spuds are mixed with tomatoes and green onions. Very tasty!! Sides consist of toast, biscuits and gravy, or hot cakes. So many choices. Very busy but the servers are great. Definitely a must to stop here when visiting with family again in the future

    (5)
  • Diana J.

Delicious French toast. Fresh orange juice- a must. My favorite- Monterey Chicken sandwich. Moist grilled chicken breast topped with Monterey Jack cheese, avocado, tomato and lettuce. Always a good choice. Staff is friendly and service is always great.

  • R C.

Huge servings of deliciousness with a side of great service! They serve breakfast all day, which is another plus. I highly recommend the spinach and mushroom omelette with a side of hash browns. The coffee was alright too.

  • Amanda Y.

My favorite place for breakfast in Turlock! They're country potatoes are delicious. The servers are always friendly and the service is fast.

    (5)
  • Emily H.

Terrible and completely bland food. Biscuits and gravy from the can, very gelatinous and were not even hot when served. Won't be returning..

  • Raquelle Z.

Extremely busy on Saturday morning which is always a good sign. Decided to start with coffee and OJ which I watched them squeeze-delicious! My bacon, cheese and avocado omelet, hashbrowns and biscuits and gravy were a perfect way to start my weekend. AJ was very present in the operations of his restaurant. I really appreciated that he was expediting and making sure that his customers and staff were receiving what was needed.

  • Amanda N.

My boyfriend loves this place. Given the option, he would come here for breakfast every time! They have a very friendly staff. Waitress walks around checking on coffee all the time. Food is good and fairly prices. You get a good amount of food too. They quickly seat you as well.

    (5)
  • Denise M.

Not much for new places but they are amazing food is perfect and oh so good!! Definitely my new morning shot

    (5)
  • Paul R.

Traditional American food. And bring your appetite. Portions are generous. Service is always outstanding. I've had breakfast at AJ's several times and have not been disappointed. Just be advised, the food is of the "stick to your ribs" variety. If you're training for a marathon, don't eat at AJ's. ;-)

    (5)
  • Johnson Y.

Had the breakfast burrito here and it was pretty good and the service here is good too!

If your looking for a good breakfast place, you definitely need to try out this place, it's tasty good price and in Turlock :)

  • Fresno C.

The people are so nice and the food is very good. Stop by here next time you drive through for breakfast. Get here early because this joint gets packed!

  • Farm S.

This place was alright. I had the omelette with bacon, tomatoes, and cheese, it was bland. But the service was really great and the waitress was very attentive.

  • John N.

While sitting here waiting for my meal this place is very friendly, the kind of place where everybody knows your name type of thing, lot of regulars here. Waitress is very a tentative food came swiftly Sourdough burger pretty good. The potato salad had an odd flavor I think it was due to the brand of black olives though. A bit overpriced for a burger though. Over $11 without the tip.

    (3)
  • Ross H.

Very friendly staff, good food in moderate proportions, and good parking make this a place you'll want to hit periodically. In addition to our egg and french toast meal, we had what I'll swear was fresh-squeezed orange juice and it was good. Try AJ's!

    (5)
  • Mary F.

Great place for breakfast! The fresh squeezed orange juice is fantastic. Portions are big and more then enough to get your morning going. Everything was cooked well and had good flavor. Will go back for breakfast anytime.

    (4)
  • Christine V.

The foods absolutely AMAZING. The wait will be rewarded so people who cry about not being seated blah blah blah.

    (5)
  • Do R.

Horrible salty fries, taste like meat! Croissant for my sandwich was days old and hard. Sadly I won't return..

    (1)
  • Brady D.

Best breakfast in town!! Great wait staff who tend to their customers timely and with a smile. Prices are great for the great food served here, the place has a very comfortable and at home atmosphere.

    (5)
  • Aly I.

So. Damn. Delicious! I absolutely recommend this place! The food is always great! They have some dishes that you can't get anywhere else (baked oatmeal, Swedish pancakes, FRESH SQUEEZED OJ!!!) ok, enough- I'm drooling over here. But, In all seriousness, it's a great little place. Great food, awesome servers, and not too pricey either. It's our favorite breakfast & lunch joint, worth the 30 minute drive for us!

    (5)
  • Stephanie A.

Not completely impressed right this second. The only thing we have gotten is coffee and menus. ------------------------------------------------------- So, it's been a while since I posted that tip and I can't even remember this joint let alone if the food was good.

I just happened to be in Turlock, CA this past Saturday getting some work done on my car. After doing some research on YELP, we chose this place for breakfast while we were waiting for our car to be done. The first thing I noticed was the unfriendly reception we received when we walked in. At least 5 servers looked at us with blank stares and didn't say a thing. Since the sign up front said wait to be seated-- that's what we did. After 5 or so minutes, we were seated in the corner, and given menus to look over. I chose the 2 egg breakfast (over-medium) with sausage patties and hash browns. I did not like the hash browns- they were soggy and under seasoned. I should have went with the country potatoes. My wife ordered the biscuits and gravy , and they were delicious. The biscuits were freshly made in-house and the gravy had a good amount of pepper infused throughout. The only thing I noticed was that the gravy gets cold fast-- so eat fast. I wish I could say the customer service got better throughout our meal-but it didn't. The server came back once to drop off the check-- that's it! However, the food did come out fast. Although the place was busy, we were eating inside of 10 minutes. Bottom line, the name of this place is deceiving. Cafe and Grill sounds nice right? I would say this is more like a diner than a cafe or grill. If you are in the mood for biscuits and gravy-- check it out. Otherwise- there has to be better options (even in Turlock).

Baked oatmeal and fresh fruit to full pancake breakfasts or Portuguese platters; this place makes it all. I love the variety of their menu and use of fresh ingredients. It is one of the most popular places for Sunday breakfast, brunch, and lunch so get there early for a booth. Friendly, polite, and timely staff earn their tips each time. I take all of my out-of-town friends and family here.

    (5)
  • BA B.

Very disappointing! Don't ever order the Swedish pancakes. They were heavy & really greasy. Spinach omelet was ok, nothing great. Biscuit tasted like it was a day old & filled with lard. The only item that was better than average was the fresh squeezed OJ but not worth coming here just for that. Won't be making this stop again on our way thru. Unfortunately this place is way overrated.

    (1)
  • Irene S.

We've been coming here a lot more often now that the World Cup is around, since it's a nice place to sit and watch the morning games. I've tried to order something different every time I go and I'm satisfied each and every time with the exception of one time. The one time I ordered the Portuguese platter I was not impressed. The quality just wasn't there, not much flavoring, kind of on the cold side and the egg wasn't completely cooked. Restaurants can't get it right EVERY time, every other time the food has been great ! Their omelets are just right, the potatoes are seasoned well and the seating is comfortable. All of the waitresses are amazingly friendly! Ignore the owner, he's really nice even if he looks pissed the entire time...Well I assume he's the owner anyway. Overall a good place to have breakfast.

    (4)
  • Leslie V.

Little on the pricey side...good size portions, but nothing I'd write home about. Believe the menu when it says the French toast is made with sweet bread...they aren't being shy with the term. Spuds reminded me more of dinner potatoes than breakfast...

    (3)
  • Adri A.

Great little restaurant. I drive there from merced. Love the fresh squeezed orange juice. My first visit I had a croissant sandwich with a side of breakfast spuds. Amazing. The spuds are topped with tomatoes and green onions. YUM! Second time I had the campfire scramble with biscuits and gravy as my side and a mimosa. Best breakfast EVER. Very generous portion! Our neighbor table even asked what I had ordered because it looked so great. The mimosa was tiny but the fresh juice cannot compare to bottled :) it can be awkward because the place gets so busy and when you're waiting up front you constantly feel like you're in somebody's way but it's a small price to pay for a great hardy meal

    (5)
  • Rita-Hani T.

Yummmmmmy!! I love their breakfast burrito!! The staff is soo friendly it feels like your having breakfast with family, it's always busy but it doesn't mean the service is delayed. Awesome staff! The owner and manager do a great job on picking his employees. He looks like a really nice guy you'll see him around there often. If you like Denny's you will love this place. It's so much faster and the food tastes fresh out of the kitchen (almost home made). You'll see family there eating with kids sometimes and many regulars. It's nothing fancy just informal, which is perfect to suit the low prices. They customize the menu to your needs as well. I would say its a must go for breakfast. Breakfast burrito is really good!

  • Melissa J.

AJ's has the best chicken fried steak and eggs! Comes with hash browns and toast. My fiancé and I will only go here or Velvet Grill for breakfast! AJ's can get packed on the weekend but is worth the wait. Oh! And they have freshly squeezed orange juice which is a must try!

    (5)
  • Carlos F.

Great place of breakfast! Good service!! Love the Campfire scramble! Good stuff stuff!

    (4)
  • Kailyn B.

Pretty good food but I have only been here twice. I highly recommend the potatoes they're awesome. Service is pretty good I had a waitress with red hair she was very friendly and was on top of everything when it came to what we needed! They can get busy at times but over all it's a nice place to go to especially for breakfast!

    (4)
  • Tami I.

This is the best place for breakfast in Turlock. The food is fantastic and the staff is attentive and wonderful.

    (5)
  • Traci B.

It's not a fancy place and has a diner feel to me but prices are reasonable and the food is good!... A friend and I wanted to meet for lunch and she picked AJ's.. Once we were seated and looking over the menu, she informed me that "breakfast is where they really shine". Since they were still serving breakfast, I ordered scrambled eggs with biscuits and gravy and 2 thick slices of bacon... Oh yum!.. Apparently the biscuits and gravy are made from scratch, they were really good! The portion was large and I couldn't finish it all so I brought the rest home.. I have also been told to try the linguicia too...

So again, I find myself traveling 600 miles from home and in a city where I only recognize chains. When I travel I walk a fine line of eating local vs chains vs eating local at scary places. My preference obviously is to try the local places, not be scared and have a great meal. Luckily I was in town for work and based on a local person in the office, they recommended AJ's. At first glance it's a standard greasy spoon diner. After taking it in for a moment, 3 things stood out. 1) You could see the cook/kitchen clearly and it's open to view (yay, I can watch!) 2) It was decent and clean and 3) they had specials, I love specials. I tried the John Wayne burger (a special) and was pleased. The bun has issues containing the moisture from the toppings, that was the only negative. However the fries were good, not out of a bag, obviously chopped in-house and were not greasy. I managed to clear my plate, which is rare. Looking for local flare, a decent meal and a non-sketchy atmosphere? This is your place.

Don't ever order to go!!! I called in my order this past Sunday at 11:20am girl on the phone said 10-15min. I got there a bit later just in case it was busy. I had such a simple order 2 breakfast burritos to go!!. When I went to pick girl said oh sorry it's not ready but I can go ahead and charge u, I then asked how much longer?.She was very nice don't get me wrong all waitresses were overwhelmed with guest but I could hear her asking the cook who had a burgundy shirt on that day." Do u have the to go order ready"?. He was all like it's going to be a while..WTH!! Why would he say that. I waited and waited seen plates coming out back to back but not my to go order how un professional of him. I asked for my money back but oh that's when my food magically appeared. ..that was the worst to go experience ever I left at 12:10pm and the burritos were tasteless, the cook sucks they need more cooks on weekends that actually care about the guest and the food that's coming out.

  • Marie S.

WONDERFUL family restaurant! Great breakfast food if anything! Can be busy on Sunday mornings, other than that there's seem to always be a table. I go there with friends and family whenever we're looking to get a yummy brunch or lunch.

  • L A.

The Chicken Fried Steak breakfast is the best in town! believe me-I've made a point to order this item at every place that serves it in Turlock. The OJ is fresh and a bit pulpy, yum!!!

  • Jessica D.

After a wonderful Turlock Halloween with one of my close friends we all make breakfast plans that night. (You know why!) Nicki suggests Aj's! Holy crap, you walk in and it smelled freaking delicious! I got the linguisa breakfast and a side of biscuits and gravy! So bomb. Sausage was cooked perfectly and the biscuit wasn't hard as a rock! Hallelujah! I honestly forget what my friends had, but I know all of their plates were clean when they were done. I won't ever forget the OJ though. You could totally tell it was fresh squeezed and I honestly think I said, "this is the best OJ I have ever had." I need to go back here, now that I think about it! Coffee was good too, I had about 2-3 cups! lol.

  • Esmeralda O.

Great breakfast and lunch! I love their club sandwich and fries!

I have never ever gone wrong here. I think it's on my top 3 for Turlock eateries. What I like: club croissant, breakfast (all of it), fresh squeezed oj, burgers ... I eat here ALLLLLLLLLLLLLL THE time GO AJ's! Yum-ee

  • Charlie O.

Well guess what? Found myself in Turlock again, mainly because I work there now. Stopped in here today for lunch and the service was just as I remembered. Friendly and fast. I ordered the Monte Cristo which is a sammy I really like. This one was perfect. Hot, cheese melted just right. Now the fries were the clincher. Perfectly done, Great seasoning, and alot of them. All in all a wonderful dining expierence and can't wait to try the breakfast. Two thumbs up

  • Viv C.

Excellent restaurant for breakfast!!! My family turned me onto this place after we decided to venture away from Latif's. AJ's offers quick seating combined with friendly service and great food. I usually get eggs over medium with extra crispy hash browns. Then I try the other plates at my table :-) Their omelets are delicious and so are their biscuits & gravy. I am always impressed with the number of times the staff comes around to check our drinks & insure their customers are satisfied. Definitely recommend

Lived in Turlock for 15 years and I never walked into this place until last month and I have been missing out! Their breakfast is awesome!

  • Lyzette N.

My friend invited me here for brunch and absolutely loved it! I ordered the avocado, bacon and cheese omelette, which came with a side of potatoes and a nice fruit bowl for an additional .59 cents. My omelette was fluffy and filled with lots of bacon! My potatoes were just right amount of crispiness and everything was super fresh. I can't wait to go back!

    (5)
  • Kandace H.

It was at this place where I first tried linguica and biscuits and gravy. The portions are pretty big and the food is hot and ready to be scarfed down. Service was ok and the atmosphere was nice.

  • Lg M.

Still a great choice for a meal. ;)

    (5)
  • Dwight S.

Service and food was excellent. We received drinks immediately and was able to order food soon after. I ordered the ham and eggs with biscuits and gravy while my daughter ordered a scramble with toast. We got our food in less than ten minutes and the food was delicious. Because of older reviews commenting on their orange juice we decided to give it a try. My daughter doesn't like orange juice but she still said it was the best she ever had. A previous rater gave a bad review because of a sign but while we were there we did not see an offensive sign anywhere. Would definitely go again if we are in the area.

  • Karen O.

Was in Turlock for a soccer tournament and looking for a place for breakfast. Got turned onto AJ's. From the outside wasn't expecting much but everyone in our group had a really yummy breakfast - good service, quick, willing to split the check to make things easier for a large group. Anyone know if they're open on Mondays? Need a place for tomorrow too but too late to call.

    (4)
  • Jamie D.

Went based on the yelp rating. Place was packed so expectations were high but pretty disappointed overall. Bacon was super greasy. Biscuits and gravy were bland. And it was expensive. For one meal, a kids meal, a half order of biscuits and gravy and a couple sides we paid $40. Probably would have given a 3 rating if it wasn't so pricey. Not going to be a returning customer.

    (2)
  • Joe L.

I had heard great things about this place and it still met all expectations. I went in for breakfast on Saturday morning with the family and was met with immediate seating and prompt service. I had the Ham and Eggs with country potatoes. The surprising part was we all had our food within 10 minutes of ording and plenty of coffee refills throughout. The food itself was exactly as ordered, filling and delicious without an abundance of grease. I will recommend this to anyone looking for a great homestyle meal without the dishes.

My parents have been going here for ages. I have been at least three times and I have never had a bad meal. The service is good and the food is great!

    (4)
  • Anahis C.

Good place for breakfast. Try the apple walnut oatmeal, reeaally good! Some of their plates have incredibly huge portion sizes so just be aware of what you're ordering lol. Good service. Never have to wait for coffee. Loses a star because my side of fruit tasted kind of bitter :-(. Other than that, it was great!

    (4)
  • Ed X.

You are seated quickly. Have not visited for breakfast, which I hear is real good. Eaten here a few times and the food resembles Paul's in Merced, neutral.

  • Trevor S.

I stopped by here for lunch the other day with some relatives. It was my first time going there, although a few of the people in my group had been there before a few times. I ordered the Grilled Cheese with french fries. Now, I'm normally not a fan of french fries, or any potatoes for that matter, but these fries were seasoned perfectly, and were done just right. Not soggy at all. The food came quickly, and was very good, especially considering the price. No one in my group of 7 had any problems with the food. The milkshakes were also very delicious. The service was nice and prompt, and very friendly, and didn't mind that we stayed and chatted for nearly an hour after we had finished eating. I highly recommend AJ's to everyone

    (4)
  • Vannessa C.

The biscuits and gravy were delicious!!!! They make them fresh and keep popping them out. The rest if my breakfast was good. Forgot what I ordered exactly though... Damn, time to go back I guess!

    (5)
  • Chris B.

I have never been disappointed with either the food or the service at Aj's. Everything that I have ordered from here is always delicious and filling. I really don't mind paying a couple of dollars more than I would at craphole chains like Denny's and IHOP. I especially love when they have tri-tip sandwiches during the summer.

If you're looking for a traditional home style breakfast in Turlock this is the place. It's clean and comfortable.

  • Caity M.

Right after my husband and I ordered he pointed out to me a disgusting, vile, unAmerican sign that turned my stomach, if my back had not been to it I might have seen it in time. If I had not just ordered I would have left instantly. Horrific. Lets just say this-- I don't know if their food was good, I was too disgusted to taste a bite of their slop. I am never going back here. Ever again. Their menu was extremely limited and I had a very hard time finding something worth eating so I settled on chicken strips and fries. My husband had a cinnamon roll for dessert, because he still was able to have an appetite after what they felt was okay to place on the walls of their hell hole and he said it was very bland and boring. They felt that I needed to be subjected to their unAmerican views and beliefs. No. Thank. You. Never again. I fully urge you to boycott this foresaken pile of crap if you believe in America and the right to be free.

    (1)
  • Natalye R.

TASTY! Some of the best french toast I've had, ever. And my eggs were made perfect. Unfortunately a friend in the group ordered a vegetarian omelette and had to have it returned twice because there was bacon in it. When his third one was delivered there was hardly an apology. I'd at least expect a comp or something. Still, I can't let that make me forget how food my french toast was.

  • Jenn F.

Great breakfast place, especially since Neto's closed. (which I didn't know about until I tried to get my girlfriend to meet me there.) Had the portuguese pile, but it was too heavy for that morning. Good combo, but I barely finished half of it. Beauty was that our server let me have french toast on the side instead of regular toast. :) the baby we had with us was totally entertained by the server's bird noises too, which allowed us to sit there for a LOT longer than we probably should've with a two year old. I'll definitely return, but i'm getting the french toast supreme next time.

  • Medic R.

Good breakfast place. Food is pretty good, & the service is always great and friendly! Great hangover food

    (3)
  • Jami W.

The ULTIMATE hangover recovery spot. Fresh-squeezed OJ and Breakfast Spuds never, ever let me down, and before I went vegan I could always count on the french toast, omelets, pancakes, but most of all the baked oatmeal: seriously, try it! College kids needing a huge, greasy breakfast will never be disappointed by AJ's.

    (4)
  • Victoria B.

Aj's is my favorite for baked oatmeal and fresh OJ. They are the best place for breakfast in Turlock. I have had a couple mishaps with their milk being sour, but hey I got over it. Their service is good. I haven't tried much else on their menu but everyone I know who has been there likes it. Place is packed for breakfast on weekends.

Went back for breakfast burritos once. My second, and final, mistake in going back there. The tortilla was overly crisp and it just didn't have the right ingredients for a breakfast burrito, not when you're used to the Buzz Burrito in SLO.

Great service, good food. You have to be there before 9am on weekends otherwise you will be waiting for a long time.

This is my parent's new favorite breakfast spot. There always seems to be a lot of hustle and bustle going on but you never have to wait more than 10 or 15 minutes for a table. The booths are a little on the small side but oddly enough I never feel cramped. The service is prompt and friendly, the food will warm your belly and put a smile on your face. If you are in Turlock on a Saturday or Sunday morning this should be on your *where to have breakfast* list. There was need for Denny's or IHOP in Turlock because of places like this, even though we now have both.

I've had lunch only approximately five times and each time was pleasant - seating was immediate, wait staff friendly and attentive and food arrived within a reasonable time. Menu selections should suit just about anyone. My favorite was the Turkey Croissant Sandwich. Booths are a little small and some seats could use new padding, but overall, it's worth stopping here for a nice meal and good service.

The food is good for the price and you do get pretty good portions. The atmosphere is friendly and on Sunday morning there is a line out the door so its a great place to go for Breakfast.

This place has an old fashion vibe but I think its a lil too price for food that isn't all that special or unique. But its still a cute lil place that is different then the usual chain restaurants.
