A low key Jewish deli in Tarzana. A bit hidden off to the side of Reseda and Ventura, right next door to Bea's Bakery. I visited for the first time today. Service is great and experience is so much better than Jerry's Deli. The bread on my brisket sandwich was really fresh. They had sweet spicy mustard available when I asked. Potato salad side was generous and really satisfying. I even enjoyed the chicken noodle soup. Service was extremely attentive. Most of the diners here, if not all, were seniors including the servers. Loved it!

For me, giving out Yelp stars is all about expectations. Places that exceed expectations deserve recognition and those that underwhelm deserve recognition for that too. When it comes to delis, there are so many in LA that just don't measure up. Being Jewish and raised in LA, memories of those weekend family brunches at the deli are treasured. Unfortunately the deli scene is LA is pretty dismal. Jerrys has pretty much ruined the scene with horrible food and high prices. Canters and Brent's are still good but prices are high and a little tough to get to for me. So Morts deli is the last bastion of Jewish deli fare that measures up to the memories. The food is very authentic, priced fairly, and served with a smile by a friendly face. This place is like the Cheers of delis, come here often enough and they will remember your name and what you like to drink. Everything is home made and fresh. Deli meats are highest quality and fresh. Breakfast is perfect any time of day. The restaurant appears recently updated a little, everything looks nice and clean yet still retains that deli feel. Bea's bakery, attached to Mort's, is just amazing. They make everything there so if you need some pastries, a birthday cake, or just a few cookies on your way out there is NO Better bakery in Los Angeles. In the end it was the service that caused me to write this review. The waiters at Mort's are old school, they know how to provide excellent service with a great attitude. Just try to finish your cup of coffee or your water, they are so attentive that you will be offered a refill before you need it. Your order will come out right and promptly just like you asked for. By the way, Mort's has the best pickles in the world. I'm giving five stars for the service and if I could I would give a sixth star for the pickles. If you've never been to Mort's you have to try it. If you haven't been here in years, come back and they might still remember you. If you are expecting white tablecloths and a faux french host you will be disappointed. If you are expecting a solid deli with great food, service, and atmosphere, Mort's will exceed your expectations!

just nothing to say...neither good nor bad, the service is nothing special, the cashier could care less as i stood there waiting for a table while she talked to someone about her new purse...the food, bland...the bakery though that place is good... so stay clear of the resturant unless you like being ignored and venture over to the bakery

Nice big menu for any time of the day. Pastrami on par with any good deli and the service is good. It's a diner style and clean and plain. Menu is huge.

Just felt like writing a review, but I've been coming here for years and have always left feeling well-fed and satisfied. Love the "old-time" laid back feel this deli provides. I order pounds of amazing-tasting brisket for our family holiday celebrations, but everything is delicious in my opinion. You can't go wrong.

Lean pastrami on rye, hit the spot. Tasty food, unpretentious yet comfortable ambiance, friendly waitress. Perfect stop when visiting the valley.

Last week went in for their early bird and got a great corned beef and cabbage with boiled potato dinner a la carte which was big enough that I had to doggie-bag half home. I looked forward to an encore at Mort's. However,... Repeat visit was disappointing. Today went in at 12:30 pm after wife's dr. visit across the street. Sat at the counter and got quick service. Ordered the soup and 1/2 sandwich. Matzoh ball soup broth and noodles were just Ok, not great, but the matzoh ball itself was nearly inedible, very smooth, I don't know how they make it. Compared to Weiler's deli in West Hills, which consistently has the best matzoh ball soup around, this was no match. The chopped liver 1/2 sandwich was abundantly filled, but again, just Ok. Nothing great. Think I will stick to the early bird.

I wasn't too impressed about this place. I went to here to eat after a quick visit at the hospital. I checked the reviews and pastrami looked good. Unfortunately the pastrami was horrible and bland Ive had way better at Brents and for the same price. If you want a sandwhich you are better off going to Gelsons market where inside they have an excellent kitchen. Not to mention the owner walked in with paint clothes and goes into the kitchen. Paints have chemicals and they shouldn't be near food equipment. Wont be going again.

This place is narrow! Not good if you want to spread out table service is done by very busy girls and a guy and I jst had to wait, Even though this is a vallley icon, I found the prices were for the very affluent benz and Beeemers. 3 potato pancakes and coffee was over $20 should have been 1/2 of that.

You know those times when someone says something to you so rude and unprovoked that you are shocked into silence? And then you walk away and know exactly what you should have said? This review is what I wish I said during my encounter with Mort's new owner Lana. It started when I called in a to-go order for my sick mother yesterday afternoon. I ordered two quarts of matzo ball soup with everything packed separately. From a practical perspective, the ingredients stay fresher when packed individually, especially if the intention is to enjoy the soup for several days. Since the restaurant admittedly does not combine all of the parts of the soup until serving, accommodating the request does not require a great deal of effort (granted, some, but not extraordinary). The deli regularly and easily filled this order for my mother for years when Mort was in charge. Also, Jerry's and Brent's will do it without batting an eye. It has never been a problem in the past. When the person on the phone took my order, she never mentioned anything about a no "everything on the side" policy. If she had, I would have gladly taken my business elsewhere to save Lana and myself the frustration of what happened when I picked up the soup. The board above the food case listed the price for a quart of soup at $11.50. $11.50 x 2 = $23 + tax = approx. $25. I was charged $30. I assumed the extra $5 was for the special packaging (though this was never confirmed). When I got to the register, Lana looked in my box and said it was a lot of containers. At first, I thought she was just making conversation. I replied, "It is a lot of containers, but my mom is sick and this is how she likes it." But Lana continued, "we won't do this for you again. It is too many containers." Before I could respond, she said, "we get a lot of SPOILED people who ask for this." My mother is ill, the kind that doesn't get better. She is in a lot of pain and finding food that agrees with her is a challenge. On top of her preexisting condition, she recently caught a chest cold and has been unable to so much as stand for more than two minutes. The coughing is so forceful that she sometimes gags and vomits. Matzo ball soup is one of the few things that has a chance of staying down. Neither my mother nor I are "spoiled" for making a small, reasonable request about the packaging of an order, especially when I paid for the Styrofoam and inconvenience. If it was a problem for Lana to have her staff pack the order, she should have told me over the phone or politely noted that she would not pack separately in the future when I paid the bill. Instead, she complained to me about how difficult it is to strain carrots from broth. It is worth mentioning that Mort's is located across the street from Providence Tarzana Hospital and several other medical buildings. The restaurant's policy of not honoring special requests may be relevant to those wanting to bring a treat to their loved ones. By the way, the matzo balls were waterlogged and the soup was flavorless. Lana is running a deli, but it certainly isn't Mort's.

Great service yummy food new local favorite for me! I'm a fan! I've tried an omelette and I'm a fan of their breakfast. Easy on the wallet too. Best tuna melt I've had in a while. Also their ranch dressing is the real deal.

It was unfortunate that we had to spend part of the time around Christmas at the hospital down the street. But when we needed a big lunch for all the relatives waiting around, Mort's ably answered the call. From my very good pastrami sandwich, to the soups and turkey and turkey pastrami...everyone was happy. The guy behind the counter was very patient and friendly as our order grew and grew. This was on Christmas Day! Well done all around. I understand now why it's the institution it is!

Standard deli food. Great fried potatoes. Reasonable prices. The bakery next door is average. Good brisket sandwich.

I've been coming here since I was a child. Great diner and deli food. Full of Jewish and Eastern European staples with a consistent offering and reasonable price-point. This place is nostalgic and comforting. I wouldn't want it any other way. Pro tip: Matzo ball soup and anything with corned beef. Both are sex.

Nice deli with a great smelling bakery next door. Had the tuna melt with fries, and both items were very well prepared. Server was on top of it and the busboy constantly refilled my beverages. This place has been there for a long time, and I expect it to continue for many years to come.

Our family has been going to Mort's and Bea's Bakery since 1984. We absolutely love both. They serve generous portions, great tasting menu items, using only the best ingredients. I drive out of my way to go to Mort's/Bea's. Mort's accepts debt/credit cards. If you go to Bea's take cash. There are too few great delicatessen's and bakery's in the entire Los Angeles area. Mort's has been around since the 1960's, I think that speaks volume's.

Great place for a quick family breakfast. The perfect place for bagel, cream cheese and Lox. The place is very old and and the prices are average which is the reason why I don't give this place a 5 star rating.

Came with the siblings for lunch. For nostalgia's sake. Used to come here in the 1980's almost every Friday night for dinner. Oye! What happened?? Food has gone completely down hill. Tasteless matzah ball soup, fatty corned beef, and the breakfast eggs were dry, dry, dry. Over priced, and the decor remains the same. Waitress was very unfamiliar with the menu. And extremely rude. Miss you Mort!

This place is a hidden gem in the valley. This is the classic New York style Jewish deli on the west coast. They have giant sandwiches great shoe string fries and lots of love. They have some of the best matzah ball soup I've ever eaten. Giant matzah ball that is delicious plus they put in lots of noddles and chicken. It's as good as grandma makes for pesach! Fast service even during lunch rush. I would come back here in a heart beat!

Bada bing! Mort's has been around so long, I am sure they catered to Moses at some point. Tucked in a strip mall, at the back of a grocery store parking lot, Mort's is a full-service traditional delicatessen (restaurant and meat counter) with an attached bakery. This used to be a regular haunt of mine when I lived in the 'hood, and I don't get back there often enough, tho this trip, I managed to squeeze out two visits, once for a sandwich, and another time to load up on hard salami and ham to tote home. A plain, lean, over-stuffed corned beef sandwich is an item that is (suprisingly) difficult to find in my hometown of Portland, OR, so I welcomed the chance to grab one to go at Mort's. It didn't disappoint. Mort's menu is online. When traveling the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, check out Mort's sometime.

Been going here since I was a tiny tot slurping matzo soup. The place can be a tad pricy, however it's like walking back into the 50s. Super authentic deli with yummy pickles and beets to start with. Mort himself is an awesome dude. Beas bakery next door is scrumptious delight. So go. Shlep to morts and get yo lox on!

  • Kyle S.

Pretty average deli. I got the Reuben and it was tasty but not spectacular. Generous portion of meat but still not worth it for $14 in a diner. My friend got a salami sandwich and it was bread and salami. Thats it, a terribly dry sandwich.

Had lunch here today. I had the half Turkey sandwich and matzo ball soup, my boyfriend had the roast beef. His meal was good. The roast beef was good and his fires were great. My Turkey sandwich was good. They get a four star because the matzo ball soup was just ok. The matzo ball itself was under cooked. Great local place when hungry though.

Big ass pastrami/reubens! These sandwiches are huge, just like how a deli should serve them. I've never been disappointed here, they even have some TVs to catch Sunday football

Passable deli adjacent to the much better Bea's Bakery. There was a time - not so long ago - when delis like Mort's were fairly common. Tastes change and good Jewish deli is getting to be harder to find, even in Los Angeles. Mort's is not one of the best, but I am glad places like this still exist for those days when you want a pastrami sandwich on rye bread. We brought sandwiches over to our parents for a Sunday lunch: Two each of corned beef and pastrami and one turkey, with potato salad, French fries and pickles. The corned beef was excellent, really tasty and fairly lean. The pastrami was a bit too fatty and lacked flavor. Langer's has really spoiled me as far as Pastrami goes. Anything else is second best. Still it was passable. The turkey was dry and tasted like cardboard. If I had been in the restaurant, I would have sent it back. The potato salad was good deli potato salad, a bit heavy on the mayo perhaps, but tasty. The pickles were delicious, crisp and full of flavor. Service at both the deli counter and the register was fast and friendly. Cost of the entire meal was $68. Frankly that is a lot for the quality we received so despite the scarcity of good Jewish deli, I would probably be inclined to look elsewhere the next time I want a deli sandwich in Tarzana.

Very old school. In desperate need of some TLC, but still a very good deli! If you're in the valley, it's worth trying out.... that is, if you're not close to Brent's Deli. Their Matzo Ball Soup was very light tasting. The matzo ball itself is definitely smoother than Brent's Deli's matzo ball....

One star is being generous. This was the worst breakfast I have ever been served in a restaurant. The new owner needs lessons. Bad.

Came for lunch and ordered a soup/sandwich special. Soup was bland at best. Brisket sandwich was piled high, enough for a couple of sandwiches, but the meat was completely void of moisture and flavor. Bread was good. Waitress was wonderful. Not impressed at all.

avoid this place like the plague. It's been bought by former employee Lana Pavlick who is about as unpleasant a person as you'd never want running a deli. The food has gone downhill along with the service.

While most people think of doing deli in the Valley, it's got to be Brent's, Mort's is a pretty close competitor in the Valley deli scene. It's an old-time deli and the flat screen TV's actually make the place lose a little bit of its' character. Still, this is really good deli food. I had the kreplach soup and the kreplach was gigantic. It actually filled the entire circumference of the bowl! Really good dumpling and lots of noodles too. My Corned Beef was big and not too fatty. Decent rye bread. I got the fries instead of the slaw and probably for good reason. They give you a ton! And they're not greasy at all. Shoestring style, which isn't my favorite but still pretty decent, crisp fries. Too full for dessert, so maybe another time? Have to come back to try their take on Chicken in the Pot. Great place with an old-school NYC vibe. My only other question is this place related to the departed Mort's in the Palisades?

Delicious breakfast today at Morts...lox, baked salmon, with bagels, tomatoes, cucumber, onions and cream cheese. So yummy! Our server, Sherry, is the best!!! Morts' food has always been outstanding but the restaurant has been recently updated with a whole new look. Don't forget to stop at Bea's Bakery for the best black and white cookies anywhere. Mort's also has wonderful lunch and dinner specials. Pus, the catering cannot be beat (Lana gives huge portions for a fair price and food is always fresh and delicious!)

Wow I'm surprised that this place only has an overall score of 3.5 stars... I came here today after discovering this place from yelp (What would I do w/o yelp? Probably go hungry or eat only bland 1 star foods). This place is right next to CVS (also across the street from Gelson's Market) with some metered parking in the front and free parking in the back. Upon entering this afternoon around 12:45 pm, lucky for me it wasn't busy when I came in, (this place has a bakery right next to door, but they are not owned by the same person, but from what an employee told me is that the owners are really good friends and decided to open their businesses next to each other) I was immediately greeted by a very nice and friendly employee behind the counter (I came in here wanting to order food to go from the deli and not dine in). I told the guy that this is my first time coming in here and didn't know what I should order for lunch to bring home to my fiance. The guy recommended the corn beef sandwich with the cole slaw and so I thought that would be something tasty my fiance would want for lunch ($12.75). I also ordered 2 potato knish ($2.50 each) and 1/2 pint of herring fish ($8.95 per pound). You can pay by credit card, but with a $10 minimum. (Oh and by the way, this place seems to have a smaller seating area than some other restaurants that I've dined at and also has some counter seats as well. There's one's women's and one men's restroom in the back) After I got my items all nice and boxed up, I took my bill over to the cashier and paid for my items and then walked over to Bea's Bakery (Check out my review for Bea's). Anyways, my fiance really enjoyed his corn beef sandwich. He liked that the meat was sliced thin and was easy to chew. He loved the combination of the mustard and rye bread and pickles (he got 3 spears). The potato knish was definitely much bigger than the ones I purchase at a deli I go to in Orange County (Katella Deli, it's not kosher fyi) but I am not sure it was nearly as tasty but I still liked it. The guy at Mort's asked if I would like my potato knish to be heated up but I took it cold since I was on my drive home after work. Next up was herring and it was also just perfect and went well with crackers I had at home. My fiance loved the herring (someone at my work recommended the herring and I'm glad I took his suggestion) too. The herring was perfectly flavored and nice and firm in the cream sauce. The fish wasn't dry but salty (but that's how herring is supposed to be). Perfect combination, I would purchase this again. Wish I started coming here sooner, but overall, excellent friendly quick service. Pricing is typical of your Jewish deli. Food is excellent and a ton of food choices. I look forward to my next visit.

I have been coming here since childhood and it never changes. They still have great hot corned beef on rye. The meat is very tender and moist and rye bread has crunchy crust and a chewy middle. Potato salad is fair and pickles are crunchy and tart. Brisket is also tender and well-seasoned. Sandwiches are big and hearty and service is very fast.

I Morts old school deli, the Rueben is the best! The service is great and family like. It's next to Bea's bakery, another old school valley gem. Rueben from Mort's and a black/white from Bea's..... Doesn't get any better .

I wanted to give this place a bad review so that I could have it all to myself ;0) This joint is as close to feeling at home as home (and I like my home). I love the food, atmosphere, lack of pretense and friendly staff. It all started with the late Mort (who we miss greatly) but continues with Lana and Gary. Itsa keeper!

Ask for pickles with your lunch! Old school "diner" style setup where you will lunch with the local gray-haired set. It ain't "Katz" but its convenient to the 101 with plenty of parking out back (shared parking lot with the grocery store). If you are traveling north or south through the Valley, its worth a stop.

  • Mark W.

This place may be great for lunch or dinner but I made the mistake of having breakfast there and it was a big mistake. Coffee and an omlette was almost fifteen bucks. For that kind of money you should get a real juicy omlette cooked in a pan, not a dry omlette cooked on a grill. Any cook worth his salt knows this. It's the equivilent of frying ribs. This crew doesn't know from breakfast. Find somewhere else for breakfast.

This place is the best Jewish Deli in the valley. The best breakfast combo you could ask for: eggs, potatoes, and a bagel. Not to mention fast service and friendly people. The new owners have really improved the interior of the restaurant. Not only that, they are extremely friendly and show you they value you as a good customer. It doesn't hurt that they are also next to an amazing bakery, Bea's, with the best black and white cookies I've ever had, ever. I'd recommend this place to anyone looking for great food in a casual, friendly environment. I bring all of my out of town guests here for an easy meal before we go site seeing.

Best jewish deli, fun service, and very nostalgic! (For LA) I have been several times over the past few months...after a 20 year hiatus! The place is the same today as it was then! In fact, most of the same people working there, and they are hilarious - all having a good time at what they do, and working with each other. I've tried 3 different sandwiches recently: Corned Beef, a Pastrami, and a French Dip. Each was delicious, with lean and tender meat, and ENORMOUS. Of course, served with fries (huge amount)...makes this a non-diet meal. They have a nice menu, and serve breakfast all day (another huge plus). It's nothing to look at inside, like a coffee shop. It's clientele, older (okay, old)...but I am telling you now, and loud "DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!". PS. Don't leave the area without going next door to Bea's Bakery!

YUMMY CORNED BEEF ON RYE !!! Morts has been around a long time and was starting to get a bit run down... but he finally sold the place to mgr. of 15 years who has cleaned up the place, and added a few hi-def T.V.'s Food is just as good if not better......

Dry. Bland. Meh. Old people food. Seriously, if you're under 60, you'll be the youngest person here. Fries are good. EDIT 03/31/13: Their corned beef is DELICIOUS. Adding a star.

Under new management and freshened up. Mort's has the absolutely BEST Reuben in town but it was in serious need of a freshen up. The new owner has made a lot of improvements. Ceiling fans, Large HD TVs, new paint, new bathrooms. If you haven't been in a while you'll enjoy the new Mort's...same old deli charm with a facelift on decor. Same fantastic food!

I was given a $25 gift card for my birthday to Mort's. I was excited because I am a die hard sandwich lover. But unfortunately I will never return to this place. Its not too difficult to make such a simple sandwich but Morts FAILED MISERABLY. I ordered the pastrami on rye and it was disgusting. The meat was full of fat and way too salty. It was unbearable to chew. The bread seemed cheap and not of quality. I took two bites and decided to throw it away. The fries weren't that much better, frozen and not homemade. The cashier is very unfriendly and she needs charm school. I am so glad I was given a gift card and I was able to try this place beforehand. As my two negative experiences will never bring me back. Too bad because its very close to my house. At least they have a delicious bakery next door that deserves 5 stars but Mort's only gets 1 star from me.

I ate here twice while visiting a family member in Tarzana hospital. Once for dinner once for lunch. I tried the roast beef and the pastrami sandwiches, both with coleslaw. Both were good with generous portions of meat. The guy bussing the tables did a good job of keeping my soda topped off. Beyond that the service was very mediocre. The first time the waitress seemed annoyed that I came in, like she had better things to do. The next day I went for lunch. I got there at 11:30 and sat at the exact same table I had the previous night. After 10 minutes or so, one of the waitresses approached me and asked that I move to a smaller table that it would get crowded at lunch. So I moved... And the huge lunch crowd never materialized! In fact the booth I was sitting in along with 2 others that were empty when I walked in we're still empty when I left. Food was good service was OK. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back.

Excellent Jewish deli. I grabbed a take-out pastrami on rye. Bread was fresh, soft and flavorful; there was a mountain of pastrami. The accompanying cole slaw was perfect; and convenient access to the adjoining bakery made it easy to grab a sweet treat to complete the meal. It's a can't-miss choice for deli fans.

I was in for breakfast yesterday, basically because I had an hour to kill before I met someone who was running late. I just wanted a simple breakfast, bacon and eggs, and of course coffee. Mort's was competent and efficient. The eggs were just fine, the bacon was crispy like I asked for, and I got 3 humongous strips of it. And most importantly of all, the waitress was clear on the concept of refills. I never had to sit with an empty cup. On the down side, listening to Good Morning America on a 13 inch TV with a 1 inch speaker is kind of annoying. and the potatoes were browned but not the crispy that I asked for.. TIME OUT FOR A RANT; Why do places like Mort's feel the need to place a large limb of parsley on my plate. I realize that this was common back in "the olden days" and Mort's does cater to that older crowd, but isn't it time to stand up to the big parsley lobby and outlaw the stuff as a garnish? Now I have no problem with a talented chef using a sprig here and there for its herbal qualities, but why should my eggs have more greenery than your average Palmdale tract home? Can't we find some other use for this foliage? Is it possible to shred it, like they do with old tires to make our childrens playgrounds safer? Or can we somehow collect all the useless parsley, ship it to Louisiana and let the idiots and dull-normals at BP use it to plug the oil leak? I don't know, perhaps there is a strategic parsley reserve in an underground bunker somewhere in Nevada that needs to be replenished. But I really don't care to pull it off my plate and deal with the dirty parsley staring at me when I eat my eggs. All the while wondering whether they will rinse it off and reuse it. If you want to serve me a side salad, then serve me a side salad. If you want don't to serve me a side salad, then don't serve me a side salad. But some mornings, I am not as pleasant, cheerful, lovable, huggable and sun-shiny as I am sure I seem on the surface, I can be inwardly grumpy until I have my breakfast. And I really don't want anything that belongs in the back of the Arboretum coming between me and my eggs. THIS CONCLUDES THE RANT, HERE IS THE REST OF THE REVIEW: thank you for your indulgence. I have eaten lunch here in the past, and as I recall the corned beef and pastrami were decent enough for the neighborhood, but nowhere near Langer's/Brent's quality. But then again they don't have the lines, parking issues or prices those superstar deli's have either.

I love Mort's. I hate deli's because the food is usually overly salted, under or overcooked and mediocre at best. Mort's is completely different - at least for breakfast. Their bacon and eggs special is the best breakfast on the menu. Their bagels are fresh from the bakery and delicious. Their bakery has freshly baked bread and other goodies.

Tasty! I was out here in The SFV, ugh, for a solid 4 months and I can't believe it took me till yesterday to discover this place. Do I really despise the Valley? Contrary to popular belief I actually like this expansive place 15% of the time. The ONLY three things I love of the area are my Trader Joe's in Granada Hills (shout outs to the staff), my morning hikes out in O'Melveny Park and the food, such as Flemings, sushi and Jewish delis. That's pretty much it. Mort is one of those food places that will have me trekking out to this place that doesn't really like me much. Henry David Thoreau once said "As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler; solitude will not be solitude, poverty will not be poverty, nor weakness weakness." I love sandwiches! It is one of those simple things in life that truly makes me happy. It really is easy to please me. Get me some good bread and succulent cold cuts and will treat you not only with the utmost respect but we will be the bestest of friends EVEN if you are from the valley. Okay, I'll stop crapping on SFV. Mort is located in the heart of the Valley and I love Morts. Would I be back? Well I have to keep up my dukedom of several SFV spots but yes I would like another bowl of Matzoh balls, it reminds me of what my bubbie used to make back in Brooklyn.

So I'm on a roll (no pun intended) with a hankering for deli! This place is ugly old, but another one of my favorites. Waht can I say, I like places with character. The waitresses and busboys are universally nice, helpful, and efficient. This is the deli where I have probably eaten the most in terms of variety. I'm never disappointed, but I'm most satisfied when I have one of Mort's chopped liver sandwiches. Discusting looking stuff, but Y-U-M-M-I-E! One tip to anyone who is going for the first time. Watch out for the booth in the middle of the side wall. When the bakery is mixing dough this booth vibrates when the mixer is running. I didn't like that very much; my wife had no complaints... go figure. In the end, we both left with a full tummy and a smile!

We ordered several deli trays for a recent event - they were beautiful! The owner, Gary brought the trays by personally and was super helpful. The egg salad was wonderful. Highly recommend this great deli. I also suggest stopping by Bea's next door for the best black and white cookies in the city!

This is my all time favorite place to go for breakfast. They have the best steak and eggs!! Everytime I go home to visit this is a must have.

I live in a place where god deli is nonexistent, but grew up where it was king. Mort's isn't quite up to a 5* rating based on my New York area experiences, but it is the best deli I've had in many years. The food is fresh, portions are large, staff is very friendly. Highly recommended!

The food is great, but it's a pricey little spot! I've only ventured the sandwiches, but based on the quality of these little masterpieces, this place is a hit! Like others, breakfast is served all day, and who doesn't love that? The decor of this deli restaurant is pretty bare. I would never take a date here! Although she may be impressed that you're taking her to an expensive place. The bathrooms leave much to be desired, but the staff and customers are friendly enough. And believe it or not, this Jewish spot had quite a bit of diversity at their tables. The seating situation doesn't favor large groups unless you are the first group to enter. Otherwise, you will be sitting in other booths or tables. The deli opens up to a full fledged bakery!! With golden brown loaves of breads, sweets, and cakes (some of which look like hamburgers!!). I had to walk out of there quick, before I gave in to baked goodness! I have the funny suspicion that they deliver, but I haven't asked, and I have yet to see a sign. Maybe I just wish they did.

Tried this place and the food was ok and a bit dry. The service was ok, one waiter was cool and the other just had this scowl on his face where I didn't feel comfortable. Is my first time eating at a deli and hope not all are like this. Not a place I will frequently go to unless I am running out of time due to me working close by to grab a bite.

Wow. I was highly upset with this deli. We went here because it is within walking distance to our house. All we wanted was a 1/2 lb of roast beef and a 1/2 of ham... Well they only have one type. No names, just ham. Even though we wanted black forest ham, we settled for just ham. We noticed that all of the meat was $14.99 a lb. I thought this was odd because usually turkey is cheaper than roast beef, but I thought this must be some bomb ass meat. Uh No. I was so wrong. We got home ready to make our sandwiches and first tasted the ham. Eh we thought, nothing fancy and definitely not worth $14.99 a lb! But whatever, we tried the roast beef and the disappointment reached its peak. It tasted and felt like paper. I was so frustrated! 1. Because I was hungry and 2. Because I just spent so much money on this damn meat. We would have been better off going to Gelsons across the street. If I am paying for quality then I want quality. After making my sandwich it tasted ok. I put cheese, little honey mustard, put it in the broiler to melt and dip in it Au Jus. After that is was edible, however, if I took a piece of paper and added those toppings on it, it wouldn't taste like paper anymore either. I will NEVER waste any more money here again. Plus this place is NOT clean. The health department needs to make an unexpected visit and im sure they would not pass.

Don't ever order an omelet at Mort's! I ordered a deli omelet there and it was around twelve dollars and I got a truck stop omelet. A truck stop omelet is cooked on the grill not in an omelet pan and is dry and overcooked, not juicy like an omelet should be. This is like selling flat beer or champagne. Everything you bought it for is not there. There are many other good deli's in the Valley. I won't darken their door again.

Way cheaper than getting back on the plane and going back to NYC for my favorite pastrami on rye! Ex-New Yorker like me? You need to go here to feel at home. It is SO good! Whenever I'm at Bea's Bakery next door (you need to go there, too!), I order my lunch to go from Mort's. The take out preparers are always friendly, fast and make a great sandwich!

Small town deli/ dinner... Great breakfast, friendly staff. It seamed as though they knew customers by name. They have pretty good breakfast specials on the weekdays I'd suggest you try it out. *** Bea's bakery next door is a dangerous place (in a good way).

I was recently in Morts for the first time. I've been living out here for many years from Brooklyn and I can't believe I've never been a customer. I guess I don't get over the hill very much. I'm in Santa Monica. In any event, I had a corned beef sandwich on egg bread and it was pretty good. About the same price (or perhaps less ) as Cantors but at least they don't charge extra for cole slaw! Morts also has daily sandwich (except weekends) specials for $8.95 which is a pretty good price for a deli sandwich these days. I'd visit Morts again if I'm in the neighborhood which is practically never unless I'm coming back from Morro Bay. Oh the bakery part looked very impressive. Bigger selection that Cantors no doubt. Support your local deli! HM

Been eating at Mort's for over 30 years. In a town of fantastic deli's, little Mort's in a non-descript shopping center is my absolute favorite. I no longer live in LA but I never have visited without multiple meals there, including yesterday morning. Sadly, prices are completely off the charts. A lox platter for 1 is now $14.25!!! That's a single bagel, a few slices of lox, and some cream cheese. Come on, Mort!

Ah, Mort's Deli. This place is always good for a laugh. If you want to see old jewish guys yelling at each other across the restaurant about how "disgraceful" big government is or see a whole restaurant scowl at the TV showing CNBC this place is awesome. As for the food, I don't know how in the hell they make their coffee so good, and the omelets are decent if you stay away from the non-standard fare. The service is quick and they'll get to know you by name pretty fast. Picture a truck-stop diner in the 70's but with genuinely funny regulars and a timeless feel.

I get take out about twice a week here. The meat quality is excellent. Corned beef is about as good as any that you would find in LA, if not the best. Not too lean, not too fatty, great flavor, just the way I like it. Prices are about average for a deli, which is to say high. But the food is worth it. I also really like their potato salad and macaroni salad. Bea's Bakery next door is excellent as well.

Great quality deli meats, everything seems very fresh. However sandwiches needs add ons for flavor though, just the meat and roll is way to bland. The price for a 1/2 soup and sandwich at over $10 for a deli is about $3 overpriced. Not worth a stop.

I've been coming here for almost 20 years. It's not a good deli for vegetarians, but the bakery is phenomenal. Plus, Mort's is an excellent yet unlikely place to see local celebs. Try the borscht, stay for the glimpse of a very cartoonish Denis Leary.

The food was barely edible and it was overpriced at that. It was $24 for one egg salad and one tuna salad sandwich with two drinks. My kids, who love tuna, did not want to eat the mushy, stinky tuna. The fries were bland and tasted as if they were made hours earlier. The egg salad was a cup of mayonaisse with 1/2 an egg blended into it. The service was minimal and all the utensils, plates, and restaurant itself were dirty. The bread which comes from Bea's Bakery was no better than Sara Lee prepackaged bread. What a waste of money! Gotta go, I am actually cooking dinner now after I paid for a terrible meal my children are hungry. I wish I had the chutzpah to refuse the check, but I did not bother with a tip!

What a find! The atmosphere is not much but the food is delicious. The tuna salad is very fresh. All the soup is homemade. I recommend the chicken noodle, mushroom barley and sweet and sour cabbage. Early bird dinner specials are inexpensive--they include dessert so you can take Bea's Bakery treat to go.

This was a stopping place for breakfast as we were driving on 101 headed north. Happened upon it by using my cell phone to search for a restaurant. We went inside, thinking that it looked appealing, and we were hungry. The service, however, was sadly lacking. A waitress took us to a table and promptly ignored us, not oven offering coffee, at breakfast time! The place was not busy; I was baffled to see only a few tables occupied - so why no service? Our waitress was standing nearby and after about 10 min, as I was about to walk over and ask her to bring us coffee and take our order, she meandered over just then. Although she appeared bored and unhappy to be there, things improved when we got our food. Typical breakfast omelette, etc, were all good, not outstanding. This is probably a family-run deli and perhaps she "has" to work there - she sure seemed unhappy. A plus for me while waiting for the food, was a side-trip to the bakery adjoining the restaurant. Great service and friendly people there in the bakery! I would return next trip and just go to the bakery!

I really like this deli. The people who eat there may seem like there eating their last meal but that shouldn't detour you. I like it a lot more than any other deli i've eaten at in the valley, especially brents which I really don't like. If you combine morts with bea's i'd have to give it 5 stars.

I went back after a long absense. My favorite is the rare roast beef and swiss on rye with mayo only. Excellent, as were the pickles and the potato salad. Sadly, the price had gone up to $12.95. Ouch.

There are no reviews for this place, because it is awful. They have stayed in business for so many years because it is close to a hospital. My advice...eat the hospital food. The health department should probably check out their kitchen as well.. Something is fishy about this place and it is not a Fish Restaurant.
