The #1 thing I like about ice cream is it does not count against your calorie count for the day! It is more of just a filler and fills in all the cracks where all the food ha settled in...flavors what can you say they are all good I am not sure there is a bad flavor in ice cream? I would suggest frequent stops to try as many flavors and flavor combos as possible. I like this place because it is not a chain and it is a Sac Town staple. We used to sneak over here on hot days after lunch for a cool refreshing treat and was always on point.

Jik Jak ice cream! Wow, chocolate, almonds, cinnamon and malt. Love the seasonal flavors they offer. Find a coupon somewhere to buy one cone, get one free. I found my coupon in an annual calendar we get in the mail. Love that they pleasantly offer tastings of different flavors.

I always thought this was the cutest ice cream parlor and this is where I had my first hot dog sandwich! I love hot dog sandwiches now! They slice up the hot dog so that it goes with the bread and lettuce perfectly. It comes with salty chips that just compliment it. I usually get the chocolate chip cookie dough, I'm kind of boring when it comes to ice cream flavors, but the ice cream was not too creamy and had a lot of cookie dough in it. Come here if you want some good ol' American ice cream.

Love this original ice cream parlor / diner. They have a basic menu including their classic - a hot dog sandwich! I've never seen this place without a line out the door...maybe in the winter. But it's a popular neighborhood spot. They make milkshakes, sundaes, etc. During the summer they have fresh peach ice cream - yes please!

What an amazing local ice cream shop with the perfect old fountain shop feel. Reminds me of growing up and going here on those hot Sacramento days. They have a handful of booths as well as a dozen seats at the counter. Get a milkshake....they're the BEST in town!

Good food, great ice cream and reasonable prices. Try the seasonal ice cream :) The place does get busy and the parking sucks so don't come in a rush.

i went there three days in a row just this past week!! ; ( LOL. their prices are good for the amount you get! However there was a day that the waiter was really rude and didn't approach my friend and I nicely at all. I think he was upset because we had a toddler with us who pulled out napkins and put them on the table. Of course toddlers don't know any better, but he came up to us really annoyed, took all the napkins, and tried throwing them in the trash, but missed. He didn't even pick up the napkins after knowing that he missed. LOL. Then he came up to us and didn't greet us in a nicely manner. i still love vic's though, just not his customer service.

very nice place. I went there on a date. They just open a new Vic's cafe, very good coffee. Good selection of pastries. Great atmosphere. I will always come back for a good coffee.

Vic's is one of those old school places that people go back to time and again. They do things here the old fashioned way. What they do: ice cream, malts, shakes & sandwiches. Something so simple, like an egg salad sandwich is done here so well. It's like your grandma made it for you. You know what I mean, that way that only grandma can. You try and make it but it's never as good as how she makes it. That's this sandwich. They also have a hotdog sandwich, reubens & even braunschweiger sandwiches. Their shakes are absolutely delicious! I got their chocolate malt and will definitely come back for more. It's exactly how you'd want a malt to taste- rich & creamy and full of flavor. Vic's is refreshingly simplistic and stays true to the old school. It's a great place for a tasty lunch and even better - the ice cream treats!

  • Tracy Y.

A childhood favorite that has maintained a place in my ice cream loving heart! The old stand is a strawberry sherbet freeze. Don't know how they do it, but the smooth texture and mix of sweet and tart gets me every time! And a seasonal selection that I can't find anywhere else is the brownies n cream!! Imagine super dense chocolate brownie pieces with vanilla base and almond chunks... Sound like heaven?? Yeah, it basically is. Only problem is they don't have it year round. (And the fact that whenever I go it isn't in season, WTH!?!)

I'm definitely a fan. I would be 100% with the 5-star rating if they had the Italian Wild Cherry ice cream available daily that they sell at Masullo's just down Riverside. There's just something so especially Italian and DELICIOUS about it. It's Johnna- and Johnna's-Mom-approved. I basically agree with Anthony W. on the details. The ice cream parlor is close to home, the sandwiches are probably better at Anthony's house, and their minty flavors are the cat's meow for the "under age 6" set. I thought maybe it was just my bubba tine liking the strange flavors like her mama, but no. The kiddos love the mint. I recently had the spumoni. It was the bomb. An unusual-to-me version of the old favorite. I'd eat that spumoni ice cream all god damn day if it didn't effect my waistline. It is so good. Then on another day I had the lower sugar coffee flavor. Then the time before that I had the root beer float. Their root beer float is hella, hella good. Oh ya. I'll probably be there at 10a when they open. Like I was today. And the day before yesterday, stay tuned for the "I feel fat" reviews coming soon. If you aren't into the big crowds of swearing grade-schoolers, get here before school lets out.

Hands down the best ice cream around. I have yet to find a better Mocha Chip anywhere! The whole family loves Vics.

  • Ann H.

Normally I would give Vic's 5 stars due to their fabulous ice cream but unfortunately I'm rating it lower because the last two times I have been there it's been dirty. The floors and counters appeared to be barely wiped off and it wasn't because they were busy. Most of the crew was either helping customers or standing around talking. It's such a contrast to the newly opened cafe next door..I won't be returning any time soon.

This is a place I grew up in- you have to go here- totally old school. They used to change the wallpaper every year. This place has character and an awesome history! Get the hot dog sandwich and a cherry phosphate!

Absolutely adore Vic's. Such a classic, lovely Sacramento gem. Their ice cream is the best I've ever had, & the sandwiches are both simple & delicious. My favorite Vic's meal consists of an egg salad sandwich on Sourdough & a scoop of Mocha Chip ice cream. Perfect.

  • Bianca T.

Vic's is the best ice cream in Sacramento, hands down. Old school, delicious, neighborhood gem of a place! Seasonal flavors are the best, but you can't beat the cookie dough and mint chip.

I grew up going to Vic's. It's been a family favorite for decades. For years, we have bought Vic's delicious chocolate ice cream pies for family gatherings. My favorite ice cream there for years has been the Raspberry Ribbon - vanilla with a taste of raspberry throughout the ice cream. Very unique to Vic's and never lets me down. Service is always pleasant, steady, and quick. A Sacramento classic for families and especially during the summertime. Although, of course, anytime is a good time for ice cream at your local hometown diner.

Great service and great ice cream. It has the old time feel to it and is a landmark in Land Park.

Just wanted to provide some helpful information: if you order an ice cream cake, don't expect to eat it there. We ordered a cake for my twin's 2nd birthday and they wouldn't allow us (8 people) to eat the cake there. Nowhere on their website does it say this. We received rude service that left a bitter taste in our mouths. We won't be going back. Go to Burr's instead.

We happened to be at Funderland on a warm afternoon and decided to get some ice cream after the kiddos had their fun. I Yelped ice cream and had the option of Gunthers or Vic's. Since Vic's was closer and on the way home we decided to give it a shot. The children's scoop was huge! Next time I'll order that instead of the a single scoop (to me it seemed like they were almost the same size - maybe the single scoop was a little bit bigger). Between 5 of us we ordered the brownies n cream (x2), cookies and cream, roasted almond and plain vanilla. The kiddos and adults all left happy and for only ~$12 :)

  • Mindy W.

I got the reuben sandwich. It came with ruffles. I got a choice of mustard/mayo or thousand island which I chose the latter. The reuben was on the salty side so it was hard to eat without a glass of water. I also had a strawberry milkshake which was on the thinner side, the way I like. I'm still burping up strawberry flavor. Can't come here in a big group, since the biggest table is a small booth that when squeezing can fit 6 peeps max. Overall nice little ice cream parlor sandwich grill place, but nothing really stood out to me on my visit. On the upside, 1 scoop here is the equivalent of 3!

I know it's debatable, but in my opinion this is THE best ice cream in town. Friendly staff, classic ambiance, great ice cream.

  • Madison M.

Vic's is a classic- a wonderful, unmissable classic. The ice cream & milkshakes are great and so are the pies and sandwiches. It's all super fresh. And the service is always great. It's a classic diner that's been around forever and they have things down.

OMG. I'm in love with this place. Came here as my cousin suggested it after dinner. Got here around 8.30pm and it was packed. The line was to the door so we couldn't get in and had to wait until the line got smaller to enter the shop. They offer many flavors, but once my cousin said he usually gets peppermint I knew that was what I was ordering, 1 scoop in a cup. They give you a really generous scoop (more then I should have eaten). Let me say that this ice cream is so flavorful with each bite, dense, and very creamy. The peppermint had bits of peppermint candy all the way through which was so good to crunch on. My husband ordered the muddy mocha flavor and said it was very good and my son got the peppermint which he really enjoyed. Since eating the ice cream last night I've been craving more. I wish we had ice cream as good as this in the South Bay. All we have is and Baskin Robins and Cold Stone and neither are good. There are a few good gelato shops but I want a Vic's. Definitely will be back every time I'm in Sac.

    (5)
  • Kelli S.

Vic's is good. It's not earth shattering, but it is good, and a kid's scoop is $2.25. Good variety of flavors, all the types of sundae's you could want, but nothing to write home about.

    (3)
  • Catherine R.

Ok, I'm officially addicted. Came here for a first visit to get the Vanilla with a Fudge Swirl. Saw what flavors I'd missed and came back the very next night. (I'm not sure that this is the place to strive for being a regular on YELP as my waistline may not be able to bear it.) Fresh and Delicious REAL ice cream. Summer flavors -- Lemon Chiffon (light lemon clouds in your mouth) is SO refreshing. Fresh Peach -- rich creamy fresh picked flavor. Genuine vintage lunch counter (think Lime Ricky and Hot Pressed Sandwiches). Don't hesitate to come here after a date for dessert; it's SO charming. A real Sacramento gem!

    (5)
  • Laura W.

I just don't get the love for this place. Sure, it's got that retro charm, but beyond that, the ice cream is nothing special and the service is disappointing. On my recent trip, the staff ignored my husband and me who had been waiting at the counter for awhile, and instead took the orders of a large party that arrived after us. Rude. Also, if two people order a shake to share, it's common courtesy to give two straws. Just sayin'.

Let's just keep it simple. It's a beautiful summer night in Sacramento. You're craving a sweet treat as you cruise through Land Park, and lo and behold, there's Vic's Ice Cream, right where it's always been since its grand opening in 1947. While it's small and dated, that's what we love about it. It feels like a step back into a simpler time when going out for ice cream was a special treat for the family. Vic's serves great ice cream. They pile it on, and it's relatively cheap compared to the chains. The staff is young (as they are in most ice cream shops), but they're friendly and quick, and again - they PILE on the ice cream. You'll find neighborhood families sitting inside and out, and everyone seems genuinely happy as they munch on their treats. While some may indulge in other offerings (like burgers and dogs), I find that that if you go to an ice cream shop, you probably aught to order ice cream. All that to say, we love this place. Me, my wife, my kids - all of us. It's full of memories for so many native Sacramentans, and as someone who has traveled the world with a sweet tooth, I can say with complete confidence that their ice cream can hold it's own against anything I've ever had. A++ from us!

Vic's, as others have repeated ad nauseum, is a Sacramento institution. The place exudes nostalgic charm out of every freezer and in every swivel stool. They serve a good variety of ice creams on the menu, available in cones, cups, packed, prepack, in sundaes, however you want. I'm quite partial to the toasted almond and the raspberry ribbon flavors. However, I'm not that impressed with the quality of the ice cream. It lacks a richness that both Gunthers and Leatherbys have with their ice creams and it shows when the ice cream starts to melt unusually fast - as though it wasn't churned enough. The ending texture is almost like they didn't use a full fat cream. You can also satiate your classic diner hunger pangs from their food menu. Mostly sandwiches, and while soups and salads are available, I'm not sure why anyone would go to an ice cream parlor for either. I usually get the reuben with thousand island (they ask, because I guess people order it with mayonnaise?) on light rye (dark and marble rye are not available. A reuben on anything but rye isn't a reuben.) I'm going with the cliche - it's toasted to perfection - and it also happens to be completely true and incredibly accurate because it is. Sandwiches are served with a ridiculous serving of Ruffles potato chips. Service has always been prompt, although the staff is very young - probably high school or city college students. Seating is extremely limited inside and if there is a crowd waiting for takeout, the quaint ambiance inside quickly turns into loud and busy. Not the friendliest but they've never been rude either. Prices are on the high side, however if you have an ice cream craving and are in the Land Park area, you can't go wrong with Vics.

  • Helen H.

I like how the place is a neighborhood joint that has been around for a long time. You are given a good amount of ice cream for the price you pay. I tried the Brownies and Cream. I didn't know there was going to be nuts in it or I wouldn't have picked this flavor. I don't like nuts in my ice cream. The ice cream itself was good, but not the best I've had. Service was friendly but the table at our booth had someone's leftover crumbs on it.

At the end of our girl's night out, we decided to grab something sweet. It was 90 degrees outside, so we went on a hunt to find ice cream. We drove to Gunther's but the line was literally out the door! We made a quick decision to not wait outside in the scorching heat and whipped out our cell phones to search for an alternative. We came across Vic's and we're so happy to find this little gem. Food: Each of us picked a different flavor to share, we chose: mint chocolate, chip, pecan praline, roasted almond, and raspberry ribbon. They were all good. The mint chocolate had had a nice crunch, pecan praline was sweet, roasted almond wasn't overwhelming, and the raspberry ribbon had a perfect balance between fruity and creamy. 4/5 Service: There were 4 employees, so we didn't have to wait in line too long. There's 5 or 6 tables inside and no outdoor seating. 4/5 Final thoughts: Great ice cream for a reasonable price! The single scoop is huge!

  • Peejay T.

If you serve a decent scoop of rocky road, you'll get my vote no question! Vic's does get my vote, but why 3 stars you ask? Also ordered the Cheese Dog. It's actually a sandwich... Not what I was expecting. And it was a rather "dull" sandwich at best. Thumbs up for the ice cream, thumbs down for the Cheese Dog. I'll definitely give this place another shot since I can always order their ice cream.

Best milkshakes ever......Such a cute little shop that still has the feel from the 1920s to it.

    (5)
  • Steph G.

Making Land Park famous one scoop at a time! I'm willing to fight anyone who doesn't like Vic's...okay, that's aggressive and overboard - but I'm serious. I can remember sitting there loving every bite of my hot dog sandwich (gross, now) and ruffle chips...awaiting my last bite so I could order my ice cream. This place has nothing but good memories from my childhood. Growing up in the semi-ghetto, the only ice cream you get you have to chase down the street until it stops. There are no ice cream shops to sit and enjoy your freezing cold goodness in an AC environment. And generally, it was something on a stick - no option of a plain or sugar cone, or in a cup. Yes, small and quaint, possibly a little outdated (in today's terms) this historical East Sac creamery is as amazing as it comes. Bar stool seating and booths, even benches outside if it's too crowded. Yes, the staff tend to be high school-ers or college kids. Do you really need post grad staff scooping you ice cream, no...I didn't think so...give 'em a break. It's a local business, hiring and supporting our local children. Yes, I agree if they are slacking their manager should step up his/her game, but it's a learning curve, be nice! Even going back as an adult, I still love the flavor of their ice cream. Coffee, being my all-time favorite, still has the perfect blend of coffee and sweetness. Two scoops in a cup, as perfect as a desert can come. My eyes & stomach craves 4 scoops, but my thighs scream ONLY 2...only 2!!

Found vics years ago while we were staying in Sac. We make up reasons to drive over just to stop at Vics. Love their Ice cream. Like their sandwich lunches too. super good Pecan and mint. Best chocolate around. Always take extra home.

When I clicked on the five stars for my rating I noticed the Yelp caption: 'Woohoo! As good as it gets!" and that should be the extent of my review because there is no better. I used to live in Davis, and we would drive up just to go to Vic's. I then lived in Sacramento, and was a regular there... now- it's S.F. for me and lawdy, do I miss my Vic's. The ice cream is perfect: the flavor and the butter fat content; it's sublime. Put that in a large dish with some fudge and I'm in absolute heaven. Start with an appetizer of an hot dog sandwich and I could just curl up in a booth and call Vic's my home. I've been trying to find its equivalent in San Francisco to no avail--- Vic's will always be my favorite. Try a hot fudge sundae made with banana ice cream and you'll find you have a new, favorite dessert.

I have been coming to Vic's for years now and I still cannot get enough. This was a hangout for myself and my friends when we were in high school. If you're hungry, you can't beat their BLT with red sauce and a cherry lime rickey. If you're in the mood for ice cream, their strawberry frappe is to die for! Though I am never able to finish even half of it on my own, it's a favorite of mine. Hopefully this gem in Land Park will still be around when my husband and I decide to have children. :)

  • Laura W.

Really good place to eat/have ice cream. Watch what time you go though, it gets crowded and not a lot of seating is available. It's a very kid friendly place and the staff is also friendly.

    (4)
  • LuvFood S.

I always get the cherry amaretto on a sugar cone. The ice cream is always super soft instead of frozen. That's not cool, but where else am I going to get this flavor?

    (2)
  • P C.

Always great ice cream from my perspective. JixJax ice cream, sadly out of season in July, was chocolate-based, had almonds, chocolate ribbon(?), and cinnamon. Fresh peach, available now, is to die for. Any time we're in East Sac/Land Park it's time to get a pint or two to go. Often it gets opened in the car. This place is a neighborhood icon harkening back to many of our childhoods. Haven't eaten the, ahem, regular food as I'd rather eat ice cream. Ahh, the prerogatives of being an adult!

Vic's Ice Cream is a Sacramento institution. The ice cream is delicious and you can get a quick lunch too. They have grilled sandwiches that include cheese dog and tuna sometimes they have sliced turkey. I love the ice cream pie - we get them for birthdays instead of a cake for a nice change. The milkshakes are to die for. A great place for homemade ice cream and grilled sandwiches especially for smaller children it's such an experience!

Have you ever been somewhere that didn't have quite the right name? That's kind of what Vic's is. Yes, they have ice cream there, and it's good, but that's kind of like visiting Napa Valley for the olive oil or getting the corn dog at Falafel's Drive-In. Both are fair choices, but kind of missing the better item. Go to Vic's and get a burger. Actually, go to Vic's and get one of the Burger meals. These are damn fine sandwiches, served hot and fresh by folks that give a damn. Heck, even the Veggie patty tasted good, and the fries were properly done and cooked in fresh oil.

Always great! Easy in and out and fabulous ice cream! Our family has been enjoying it for 15 years!

I love Vic's sandwiches. They are simple, yet delicious. Served with chips, the only thing these guys are missing is a terrific pickle. (Oddly, when requested they indicated that Burr's has pickles with their sandwiches. So they have none) Try the Turkey Salad on rye with cranberry sauce. OMG. So freaking good. And this is the place to take your kid on (good) report card days. They'll give you a free cone! (Bring your report card!)

I have been meaning to go to this place for YEARS. We finally made it there last weekend. I expected more. The girl at the front register was super nice. Our server was ok, and the ice cream was ok... not spectacular. I don't know if we will be going back.

  • Jennifer P.

I've been meaning to take my kids here for years. We are very big frozen yogurt fans, but I thought it would be nice to have real ice cream for a change. This is the real deal. Delicious, creamy goodness that I had literally almost forgotten. The four of us all had different flavors: cookie dough, peppermint, cookies and cream, and cappuccino chip. We all loved our flavor. The kids' scoop is a very generous amount for the price- always a plus. Having said that, there is a difference between "old fashioned" and "run down". Sadly, this location has seen better days. It seems far overdue for a face lift. If they could freshen it up a bit, it would be 5-star material. We will definitely be back again.

  • Frankie P.

Best pumpkin ice cream in sac! Seriously, all their ice cream is creamy, smooth, and never freezer burnt. I really love their seasonal flavors, especially the pumpkin. I also enjoy their sherbert freeze in the summer time. For five bucks you get a huge portion of sherbert blended with soda water. It's the best way to cool down. The shop itself is pretty small so I usually get things to go. And unlike another great sac ice cream shop, you order, they scoop and then you pay them. I find their system works well and there is never a long wait. So even if it is crowded don't let that scare you, you will be in and out quick.

  • Stacy G.

Vic's is a taste of the past in the best sense possible. Pull up a seat at the counter and taste some of the best ice cream you'll ever find. The sandwiches sound like something from an old-fashioned deli, and the black and white checkered floor hearkens back to a simpler time. My husband and I split the hot fudge sundae, which comes with 3 scoops of their housemade ice cream. There are plenty of flavors to choose from, but we went with chocolate almond fudge, maple nut, and pecan praline, all were fabulous. This little shop is a piece of classic Sacramento and let's hope it stays here always.

Delicious old school style ice cream bar. Love the toasted almond, and cherry amaretto ice creams and chocolate ice cream soda is delicious.

Truly a Land Park institution. This place has been here for years, and I have been going since I was a kid. They have really good ice cream but their food is nothing special. You go for the nostalgic charm of an old neighborhood ice cream parlor and delicious treats. It is very much a local establishment, hiring kids from the neighborhood to work there which has made a big part of the Land Park community. It is refreshing to still see places like this still around in Sacramento, and going there brings back memories of scraping together change and walking down to get some cold ice cream on hot summer days. Classic Sacramento.

I'm not a big ice cream guy, but this is pretty good stuff. I ended up having a Marshmallow Milkshake and it was really tasty. Cool old school ice cream shop with friendly service. Definitely worth trying.

One of the best ice cream parlors around Sacramento! Such a friendly small business that once you visit you will frequent yourself! Great service, and definitely worth the calories.

I used to go to Vic's all the time, back in the day- and I have very fond memories of the place. However, in these past few years, it seems to have gone downhill. I mean, ice cream is ice cream, it can never be "bad," but I can definitely say "I've experienced better." A couple days ago, I visited Vic's to give it another chance. It's been over a year since I've been there last because of the ice-covered banana split I received last time. My boyfriend and I decided to on ordering a banana split again, to see if maybe last year was just a fluke. But once again, the scoops were small (compared to other ice cream shops), the ice cream was bland, and overall, the banana split was not that satisfying. Oh well, I'll just keep going to Gunther's instead.

Flash back from the days where all women were called 'sweet heart' and noone believed the surgeon generals warnings about smoking... The ice cream is delicious and made on site. Had my first lime rickie... yum.

  • Douglas Y.

Wow, a Sacramento landmark here. Have been stopping by this place since I was a teenager. Solid ice cream treats with good portions. The food is average and overpriced at best, but the ice cream is yum! This place can fill up quickly as the locals frequently hang out here.

  • Angel H.

Top notch service, and great ice cream all year round. BUT my local secret here is the Hot Dog Sandwich, you may be thinking I'm crazy or that just sounds weird, but I've been coming here for it since I was a child and let me tell you, there is nothing like it anywhere. Grilled to perfection and goes great with any ice cream treat. Also try the Rainbow sherbert on a hot day in a cup, best sherbet from any ice cream shop and trust me when I say I've been to many. You'll love the laid back homey atmosphere right in your local area Be coming here for 28 years and I'll be a continuing customer for many more to come =)

There seems to be a debate going on as to what the big fuss is about Vic's. Are there better ice cream joints in Sacramento? Probably so. Is there better service? Undoubtedly. Let me explain to you why you should go to Vic's anyway. Vic's is a Sacramento institution. It's been around since the late 40's, and they have kept the interior pretty much the same: round swivel stools at the counter, checkered floors, and charmingly retro sandwiches, as well as some pretty first-rate ice cream. Let me be clear: you don't come to Vic's for 5-star service. The employees are high schoolers, and although they may not be effusive, they are efficient and their service is refreshingly matter-of-fact. They wear polo shirts and jeans, and often rags hang from their pockets as they scrub counters, scoop ice cream, take orders with their green notepads. They are busy. You come to Vic's for the vein of peanut butter running through your chocolate peanut butter milkshake, a shake so thick there's no way you can drink it through a straw. You come to Vic's for the sandwiches (particularly the mystifying and delicious "cheese dog," which I have encountered nowhere else), which are cut in quarters for women and in half for men. You come to Vic's for the vintage gumball machine, for the black plastic menu boards with little white letters, and for the feeling, the minute you walk through the door, that you have stepped into another era. You come because, let's face it: you need Vic's. In an era when so much has changed, and is changing, when so little of the past has been preserved, Vic's is an oasis of sameness, a haven for nostalgia, and, yes, a purveyor of some of the thickest, richest milkshakes you're likely to encounter in the Capital City.

Definitely went there today and watched the cooks make their sandwiches. First off he counted money out of the register. Scratched his head. Went on his phone. And then worst of all touched the customers sandwich with his bare hands without washing them. I was disgusted....SO NOT SANITARY. Never eating anything there again......

Cute parlor originated from the 1950s...just the type of hidden parlor I'd like to find in Sac. Their single scoop is a VERY generous scoop for a decent low price, I would recommend a kiddy scoop (better portion for a light dessert) Very creamy, traditional milkshake taste, but didn't knock my socks. Note: I went for a hot dog and it was traumatically disappointing. Okay that may be an overstatement but I was really sad because I kept imagining a normal quality diner hotdog with sauerkraut - my fave hot dog topping....when the dog came out....meat was cut thinly into slices, too much mayo, and served on thin sandwich bread!! What is this martian food?! Never had a hot dog served without a BUN...am I missing something here? Ruined my hot dog craving.

I've been going to Vic's since the 70's and I loved the place - great Ice cream, great service, great ambience. But over the years the owners and managers from all those great years left. They had pride in product and place. I'm sorry to say that that's gone now. The place is grimey, and no one even picks messes until after closing. They used to close for a week each year just to deep clean, repair and refresh the place. No more. Recently all but 3 outside chairs were broken and gone and it took over two months to replace. The sidewalk area hasn't seen a wash in forever. Half the help have no spark of either personality or service. People still come, but I see danger ahead.

I'm in a tough situation. I have to either move or join the gym because Vics is going to cause me to gain more than a few pounds... Pros: Fantastic Ice Cream with great prices coupled with prepacked flavors for the fridge. Cons: No cons...the place looks to be crowded but my wait has never been more than 2 minutes.

It was so hot outside, it could melt your flip flops. I'm a city girl and not used to the heat of Sacramento, so my first meal of this scorching Sacramento day was ice cream. Peering over the glass case looking into the different tubs with swirls of cold ice cream goodness, I picked the one that looked the coolest. Mint Chocolate Chip, single scoop, sugar cone. Walking down the street, trying to keep the ice cream from melting on my hands, I saw a little boy who screamed and pointed - "I want, I want, I want some ice cream like that, some green". You and me both, kid. ;)

$10 can bring about a pleasant expression easily on three peoples' faces here. Vic's shop has been around since 1947, and many still frequent here because of the value of their product, wholesome service, and I imagine, being there take people back to those good ol' days of being young, care-free, and innocent. I don't know about you, but ice cream ALWAYS brought about good, happy, positive feelings for me. Happy people go to get ice cream- as a reward, for dessert, or for a treat! I see why other businesses can fail and shut down around them through the years- they're not in the right industry as Vic's- literally a HAPPY business. This merry commerce serves a scoop or two, sometimes even three, of JOY in the cone or cup of their patron's choosing. I love their coffee and cherry amaretto flavors! Understandable how this ice cream parlor makes Sacramento Magazine's Best list year after year.

Best toasted egg salad sandwich EVER!!! Been going here since I was at Sierra School!!! Then of course when I went to McClatchy. Me & a friend would go every day after school to look at the cute boyz working,( cuz they did not allow GIRLS to work there back then) and eat!!!! I remember Jamie & his Dad!!!! Their ice cream is soooooooooooo good. Good times!!!

This is a classic, old-school ice cream parlor. You won't find many like it these days. In fact, in all of Los Angeles there's nothing like it left any more. The place looks like a time warp hit it. The neon sign and the counter is right out of the 1950s. The ice cream is superb (especially the Peach) and the kids working the counter rock. Here's hoping the locals in Sacramento continue to support this place. It was really hopping the two nights we went there; keep it that way!

Dear Vic's - Thank you for: - keeping an historic landmark open, - being a cute locally owned business, and - serving malt milk shakes. And while this is hard to say, please - steam clean all surfaces and crevasses of the shop, it smells like rotten milk everytime we go in, and - have the teenage wait staff employ some minimal manners and service. For instance: - clean off and wipe the countertops in between picking at your spit ends, or - say "hi, what can I get you?", with a smile, rather than wait for customers to have to holler at you to call you over while you are flirting with the girl picking at her split ends. This is not a one time occurrence, or else I would not have written this review. I like your business, I would like it to be a nice place to go. As it is right now, it is a stinky place to go, and you get to sit surrounded by dirty dishes, or get to clear off your own spot to sit down, topped off with unfriendly staff who are bothered to take menu orders. I know you can do it, just a once in a while good clean, maybe with regular upkeep by the teenagers, and a reminder to smile and be happy they have a job, and you guys will be good to go!

I remember coming here as a little kid -- my grandmother lived nearby. I'm in town for her funeral and a Chinese tradition is to get something sweet after the funeral to chase the bitterness of death. Ice cream it is. Their mint chip is fantastic and full of little crunchy chips. Great stuff. Too bad I'm here for a sad reason but was good to rediscover Vic's, if only for a single afternoon.

Had the lemon chiffon and the hubby had chocolate chip both on a sugar cone. They don't have waffle cones. :0( The ice cream was just okay, my hubby liked his though, but it still doesn't measure up to some other well known establishments. Perhaps I'll try some other flavors next time if I'm in the area.

Super yummy ice cream. I'm not sure why they don't make it more clear, but all the ice cream is made on site! We look forward to going back to try their Reuben sandwich, which is also made from corned beef made in house. Friendly staff, good prices, and soooo much charm.

Great snack and ice cream shop... I love their hot dog sandwiches. It feels like the kind you make at home! Some of my favorite flavors are the seasonal Cappaccino Chip and Butter Brittle. Peppermint Chip is also a must... YUM. It's so good around Xmas... My regualr flavor is usually Mocha Chip. If you need a dessert to take to a party they also have great ice cream pies. My favorite is the Strawberry Ice Cream Pie. The staff is always nice there and willing to let you try different flavors of ice cream. Super place for dessert!!!

It's been a long time since I've been here. Back in high school I used to come here for a Lime Rickey (like a fresh squeezed lime soda). Tonight I came in for a hot fudge sundae. I was going to be good and order a small sundae (1 scoop of ice cream), but I'm pregnant (and craving) and got the regular (2 scoop) sundae. Simply: vanilla ice cream (or any flavor of your choice), hot fudge (or any flavor syrup of your choice), almonds, and whipped cream! I think it comes with a cherry, but I'm not a cherry fan. It was pure bliss! The ice cream was super cold and creamy, the fudge had a strong, smooth chocolate flavor, the almonds had a nice roasted flavor and crunch, and the whipped cream was delicate. Do yourself a favor and order one!

It was a hot day and the kids wanted ice cream so we decided to give Vic's a try. Despite some comments about poor service, we were served promptly and the sandwiches were great. The kids ordered hot dogs, my wife had the corned beef and I ordered the roast beef sandwich special. However they only had enough roast beef left for half a sandwich, so they came back and asked if I'd like something else, so I ordered a corned beef as well and not only did I get that, but they gave me the last half of the roast beef at no charge. Now to the reason we came, the ice cream. My wife had a mint chocolate chip sundae, one child had a sugar cone with chocolate mousse and the other had a bowl of cookie dough. I had a regular cone of french vanilla and of course, knowing I was going to write this review, tried a sample of the other flavors at the table. The ice cream was creamy and flavorful and the texture was great. I can see how this place could get crowded, but our experience was great and I will definitely return in the future.

Another of my ice cream fan favorites. Located in the heart of Land Park, this is one of the oldest Ice Cream parlors in Sacramento - and one of the most recognized. A little old fashioned inside, but the service is great and you can always expect great food and even better ice cream flavors! My go to is the grilled cheese and a Lime Ricky (during the summer season) and always finish it off with a peanut butter cup-in-a-cup ice cream. Definitely a go-to, neighborhood and fun, lively atmosphere; a family hot spot!

Two syllables - JikJak. Yep, that's what it is all about. I moved away from Sacto 20 years ago, and still go to Vic's every time I am back in town. For JikJak. Only for JikJak. Not that their other offerings aren't good - but if JikJak is on the menu, that is all I see. Unfortunately for me, they only make it in winter now. And doubly unfortunate - I dont go to Sacramento as often anymore. --sigh-- If only they would do what other great ice cream shops do and publish a few of their recipes (or at least hints to ingredient proportions) . . . I could enjoy my own poor imitation of JikJak in between visits for the real thing! I guess I can dream, cant i?!

I'm an ice cream addict. That's really the one food I could not live without so I've spent this summer doing my own taste tests during National Ice Cream Month ~ so far, it's Vic's hands down! I've been back 2x in the past couple weeks and will be heading back with family next week. Other creameries come close but this one is the winner for our family! We've had the tuna sandwich and shakes as well - good "diner" style food, nothing fancy but seriously - we are there for the ice cream right?

I've been going to Vic's since I was a kid after little league games, and it still hasn't lost its appeal. The ice cream is fantastic, and I'm still finding new flavors I love.

An update to my previous review* Stopped by after our New Lai Wah dinner around 7:30 pm on a Wednesday evening and have to say, my experience prompted this update. Customer service was faster the gal there came right over to assist us, even though I was still perusing the list. A double scoop: pineapple sherbet and strawberry cheesecake. The sherbet was fantastic, lots of tart pineapple and lemon bits, perfect for the warm Sacramento summer evening. The strawberry cheesecake was ok, I was disappointed in that it did not have the signature chunks of cheesecake that I'm so use to. My sister walked out with her usual peppermint order and her friend, a 1/2 gallon of their coconut. Otherwise, thanks to the quick service and prompt acknowledgement as opposed to the experience from before, another star. Props to the staff for making this happen :o)

A mirage in hell? Please save me from this burning Vic's Ice Cream, ice cream _____ You would think that a place as freaking hot as Sacrapmento would have absolutely amazing ice cream, but this was not the case for some reason. It was good, but not orgasmic by any means. Maybe it was because I had a stuff nose, or maybe I was an idiot and I ordered the wrong flavor or something. I was also really confused because you're supposed to SIT DOWN (?) before you order, unlike every other ice cream place in the world where you walk up and look at the all the pretty (artificially colored) ice creams and choose the ones you like. They also do not do triple scoops, which almost made my friend cry, but I ordered a double and gave him one of mine so he could have a triple. Compared to SF, it was better than Mitchell's in the sense that there's a shorter line, and better than Bi-Rite in the sense that it doesn't make you hurl afterward, but not better than Joe's Ice Cream because Joe's is basically liquid cocaine. I very much liked that the place has history and character. They serve water with the ice cream, which is a great idea because it refreshes the palate. I also felt like I'd walked into an episode of Bay Area Backroads--which we all know is a terrible show--but was an interesting deja vu/time-traveling-esque experience nonetheless.

SUCKS!!!!!! Wow, I really can't believe people enjoy this place. While the ice-cream shop is in a great location, the place smells like barf and the service complied of teenage boys are inconsiderate of the people around them and barely say one word to you...so the service blows! Also...the real meat of the restaurant, the food, is horrible at Vics...I tasted the seasonal peach ice-cream, tasteless...and then I tried the mouse ice-cream...eh, like a boring chocolate ice-cream...and the strawberry, my favorite ice-cream on earth....EWWWWWWW...fake strawberry sauce...NOOOOO!!! Bad choices Vics, bad choices. Don't go here when you have places like Leatherbys, Gunthers and even friggin Baskin and Robbins beats this place...unless you like long lines, silent service and bland, non-creative ice-creams... Boo!

Sacramento legacy, baby! If you grew up in Sac, you ate (and eat) here. If you attended Catholic high school in Sac, you probably worked here too. No, you don't come for the mediocre food (sandwiches, soda pops, and they finally figured out to serve salads). You sit down in one of these booths because it's what you know. It's in your freaking DNA. Oh yeah, you also come here for the ICE CREAM OH MY GOD IT'S HUGE IT'S TOPPLING OVER AAAHHH okay sorry bout that. But seriously, these guys are strong-armed (the girls, too!) ice cream scoopers who are trained to pack that stuff on as hard and as much as they possibly can without breaking the cone. Better yet, get it in the cup. Not that you'll be saving calories in any way; it's just more fun to eat ice cream with a spoon, in my humble opin-ion-ay. It's all about the atmosphere, and this place is so Sacto that... um, you should try it, I guess? Sorry, I didn't know how to end that one. Sac's not really known for much except being the state capital and having a lame basketball team, so... Have fun!

Service is superb! Thanks Kyle for always checking on us since it was our first time there. I have tried the Muddy Mocha milkshake and the lime freeze. The atmosphere is very old fashioned and it feels like we turned back in time. Would recommend to all ice cream lovers!

Came in with family. Workers never acknowledged us while sitting at table Had to go get their attention to be helped. We've been coming to Vic's for years. Not sure why they ignored us-perhaps they were closing soon? Ice Cream was great, staff apologetic with not initially helping us. We will be back. :)

Wow, what a disappointment. My friend and I ordered a banana split...The hot fudge was about as good as some cheap brand from the grocery store, the scoops of ice cream were small, and the whipped cream came out of a can. Not worth the $6.50 they charge for such a mediocre banana split. My friend also got a hot chocolate that wasn't even mixed up when they brought it out. The first sip was all chocolate powder, and when I tasted it, I got a sip full of powder as well. $1.50 for a hot chocolate that wasn't mixed and tasted awful. And the staff members were not personable at all. Seemed like they were miserable and reluctant to be waiting on people. We debated going to Leatherby's, but thought we'd try something new. Epic fail. Next time, Gunther's or Leatherby's...hands down.

I actually like Vic's better than Gunthers. They are both very similar in that area. Vic's is cleaner with a much better staff. The sandwiches are actually pretty good along with the ice cream.

This place has one of the best ICE CREAM i've ever tasted. :D Everything I had here was great. I want to go now... :) I typically go here or gunthers. :D The service is pretty good and the location is pretty cooL. I love the riverside strip :D. The building is way cooL to me. I would totally recommend this place. Pros: Value, Quality, Ice Cream!!! Cons: Parking, not spacious Stars: 4.25

Wow, my first time at an ice cream parlor! Or at least, something very close to it! Coming here for dessert was the perfect ending to a perfect lunch. My friend and I especially loved the "antique" street signs that say "WAIT" and "WALK". Those must be 10 times older than Vic's! Anyway, being the two noobs we were, we stood there for quite awhile contemplating which flavors we wanted. The guy behind the counter said "ya know, you can try samples". Our eyes widened! We each took a sample and was still indecisive. Then the same guy says "ya know, you can get half and half". WHAT A LIFE SAVER! I decided to get the Peppermint because I've never had peppermint ice cream before and the Cookies and Cream, just because I was in the mood. Two scoops on a sugar cone and the dude only charged $2.50 for a single scoop! Woohoo! My friend went with the Pecan Praline and wished he had gone with Toasted Almond, which was what he sampled. He also got two scoops in a cup for $2.50! I know, I know, you can buy a whole container for $5. But that container won't come with the whole package! Overall, very attentive and friendly service. Cool atmosphere (minus the flies, ha!), good prices, will definitely be back!!

This is my fourth time coming here for ice cream. I would say it's probably the best creamery in the Sacramento area. I normally get thirsty from the sweetness in ice cream, but definitely not this place! I only tried one flavor of ice cream and nothing else since -- Strawberry Cheesecake; this flavor is TO DIE for. The service here is great; though it can get crowded especially during the summer so the wait is understandable. The only thing about this place I've always questioned was why I never seen a female employee working? Or perhaps, I'm coming in at the wrong time? Hmm. Other than that, this place definitely deserves the full five stars!

  • Scott M.

Vic's has been around way longer than I have and I hope it remains that way!! I have grown up eating Vic's ice cream and havent found much else that comes close. This is no chain or franchise ice cream shop...this is a true neighborhood/locals spot!! There are simple sandwiches available to order, made fresh on the spot...however this is an ICE CREAM parlor!! My all time favorite is the orange sherbet..nice and smooth, not too creamy, not too icy = PERFECT!!

    (5)
  • Anna T.

The ice cream here is good, but not as good as Gunther's. And the service leaves something to be desired. Overall though, this isn't a bad place to catch up with friends over a scoop or two of your favorite flavor.

They make their own ice cream in house. Better brittle was very unique, yay! Toasted almond was really good. Very unique. rasberry ribbon was okay but I'm not a big berry ice cream person. Kiddie double was huge! if you want a small serving, get a kiddie single. Overall, great independent ice cream shop.

I used to attend Brookfield Elementary School all those long years ago and almost every Friday, my parents would bring me here for ice cream. I used to get their Kiddy Scoop with half Peanut Butter Cup and the other half Fudge Ribbon. Their idea of scoop size is basically, get as much ice cream into the cup as possible. Their staff are always friendly and I have never had a bad experience. I love this place and will always keep coming back!

I remember when I was a kid, and I'd get taken here by my dad, who would rave about this place. Strawberry Cheesecake, Muddy Mocha, and Blackberry are standouts that I remember. After reading all the reviews of their mint chip, I'm very sad that I didn't become a fan of mint ice cream until adulthood. I've got lots of fond memories of sitting in a booth at Vic's, waiting for my banana split that I'd split with my little brother, and it was awesome everytime. I feel bad if this place has gone downhill, there's many local businesses I remember from childhood in Sacramento that were great, and having childhood memories destroyed hurts (it's the reason I didn't go to Roma's when visiting family in Sacramento area last time I was in town). But, 5 stars for what I remember, I haven't found any place close to it in the midwest. Ted Drewes is pretty solid, but it's no Vic's.

    (5)
  • Mike S.

The ice cream is great, and the food offerings are a-ok. I think the Ruben sandwich is the best thing on the menu. I have to say that the home-made chicken vegetable soup they often serve is FANTASTIC! Makes Vic's a destination on a cold winter day.

If you dropped me off at Vic's, Gunther's, Leatherby's, or Burr's, without looking at the sign I would most likely be unable to tell you where I was. Call me an ice-cream-ist, but all look (and taste) same.

This old Sacramento institution place is simply wonderful, the kind of real, old-fashioned ice cream parlour and soda fountain one used to find a lot more but rarely can these days. I started going here when in Davis and I still drop by every time I'm in Sacramento. The place makes its own ice cream, generally excellent, and has a traditional range of sodas, malts, sundaes, etc., plus the old-fashioned interior, a real counter (most ice-cream places don't seem to have a counter anymore!), booths, etc. The place has barely changed since it opened in 1947 and for this sort of place, that's good. How I wish we still had a place like this in Sonoma County!

  • Can C.

The ice cream here is tasty enough to keep coming back, but other than the ice cream, it is just okay. My favorite flavor of ice cream would have to be the Lemon Chiffon, which is seasonal (I think they only offer it in spring/summer). Their mint chip is also yummy, and I'm pretty sure every other flavor is good as well. Aside from the ice cream, I think the food is moderately good. I've had several sandwiches here, but they're nothing to write home about. I could probably make as good (if not better) sandwich at home, and probably for cheaper. I'd still come here for the ice cream though!

Ehh.... Hit and miss for me. I mean, I love ice cream. But, at the same time, the service has gone down hill for me. I went there the other day with a friend of mine and was waiting for someone to help me while she was picking something out. Two girls walked in, and then the other person working behind the counter walked over and helped them... what?! There was another time when I had bad customer service, but I don't remember what happened. I was really pissed... I wonder if I blocked out that memory o.O? I love their cherry amaretto... but I haven't been there in a long while. I suppose I want to avoid dealing with crappy service :( makes me sad when I think about it.

I was sent to Vics because it was highly recommended by a friend. It was ok. The ice cream wasn't creamy just average ice cream. And it was served in a large Paper cup which wasn't much fun. The staff was friendly and polite. It was affordable. The place is alright, but nothing to write home about.

Ice cream and sandwiches, how could you go wrong?? Well at vic's you really can't. It can get VERY crowded after sports games because this little place is definitely a family spot to come and has and forever will have that neighborhood feel, so try and time your visit here right. Mocha Chip I will forever remember here and they always have young people working here who tend to always give you a little extra on your scoops of joy. And their fudge sauce is so good, I would drink it from a bottle if I could!! And their sandwiches and cheese dogs come oozing with cheesy goodness. One of my fav things to do is to get a milkshake and pair it with a ham and cheese grilled sandwich, come here with a few of my friends and sit back and act like we are little kids all hyped up from ice cream again!! You just can't get this small neighborhood feel just anywhere in a city, but Vics will forever be one of those neighborhood gems. Some would worry that small local spots would maybe not bring in enough business but this place will always be in the hearts of locals here and makes any outing here seem like an event!

I lived in Sacramento before just to experience what it's like to live at the other end of the state, having grown up in SoCal. I'll just say that it's a nice place to visit, but I don't think I could live there again--especially in the summer when the daytime highs can be over 100F for days at a time. Ugh! One thing on my Sacramento bucket list when I lived there was to have ice cream at Vic's in Land Park. On those torrid summer days, this place can get packed. Although I didn't eat any food on the menu (which I just quickly glanced over), the real reason to come here is for ice cream, and Vic's does that very well. On my last trip up there, I of course had to come here for some kind of ice cream treat. I sat at the counter and had a nice, tall, frosty chocolate milk shake. It was simply scrumptious, especially on a typical hot Sacramento summer day. This is a favorite local ice cream parlor for the Sacramento politicians and area residents. It's also one of my favorite places to stop by whenever I make a trip over here. I can't wait to go back!

I've been going to Vic's for so damn long. Best Ice Cream in Sacramento. Probably ever. The Chocolate Mousse is so amazing. If Ice Cream isn't what you want at the moment, give the Hot Dog Sandwich a try.

A ice cream parlor! This one is great. We visited a Sat afternoon before a basketball game for a quick lunch. Tuna on wheat toast cut into fours with chips...yum. We have had the hot dog sandwich before and that hits the spot. I have tried a lot of the flavors and never had a bad one. My faves are mocha chip, lemon chiffon and the season fruit flavors. The place is indeed small, so plan accordingly. If you cant get a booth the counter is fun from time to time. If its really crowded get it to go.

$4 for two scoops of ice cream? Okay, this stuff is good, but I could buy a pint for the same price and there is never a place to sit. That's all the bad things I can say. The service is always great, the atmosphere is pure ice cream shop = outstanding and the customers are, surprising, very nice. Must be locals.

4 stars because of street parking. But, it's a nice walk..not major. Vic's is where my heart discovered it's love affair with peppermint ice cream (and my hips realized their doomed fate). LOVE peppermint ice cream and even though I tried to make my own at home, the peppermint is softer and gooier at Vic's and is a better, all around, experience. Why do we write reviews on ice cream....now I want some! Terrible torture!

Went here for the first time ever to satisfy a sweet tooth craving after a home cooked meal. The husband and I wanted ice cream, good quality, make your tummy do a little dance, ice cream. Thanks to you fellow Yelpers we chose Vics! Oh and believe you me, we were not disappointed! Love the small, simple, diner feel of the place. We weren't sure what to get. There were a good amount of choices, and they even had a good amount of seasonal flavor choices. We decided to hit that part of the menu. The guy who took our order was very helpful in letting us know what the seasonal flavors were comprised of. I chose the Butter Brittle (tasted like butter pecan, without the pecans, and had toffee bits mixed in). My husband chose Brownies and Cream (nuff said). We each ordered a single scoop in a cup and man do I have to say, one scoop is an understatement! They gave a good amount of ice cream for an affordable price (one scoop= 2.50)! The ice cream was absolutely delectable!!! Very smooth, creamy, and it hit the sweet tooth craving just right! Although this was our first time here and we have yet to try the non-seasonal flavors, all the above-mentioned led me to become a fan! With warmer days coming right around the corner, I know we will be visiting this place more often.

Vic's is my neighborhood ice cream parlor, and it meets my needs just fine. I'm not sure why everyone thinks it's expensive, because for $2.50 I can get a single scoop with a sugar cone. Their single scoop is more like a double scoop in my book. Bonus! (I'm out about $3.50 at Mochii Yogurt for a much smaller portion, no toppings) My kids love it and their favorite flavors are mint chip and peppermint stick. We tried the chocolate mousse recently and it was delightfully smooth and deeply chocolaty. We look forward to October when we can get pumpkin ice cream. I haven't been motivated to try the food since it looks like sandwiches you can make at home fairly easily. Ice cream is my top priority when I visit. The service is fine but it would be nice if the kids would smile a bit while they worked. To sum it up, great ice cream, great location (for me :D ), and as they say on ebay, highly recommended A++++++++++++++++++++!!!!!!!!!!!

The best ice cream in Sacramento! Flavors to try: Summer: peach Winter: peppermint All year long: mocha chip Plus if you're hungry, try a cheese dog sandwich.

I've been going to Vic's ice cream since I was a baby (I assume since I can't remember that far back!). My dad went here when he was younger too. It hasn't changed at all and thats how I like it. I always get the hot dog sandwich and mint chip frappe. And for my birthday my mom traditionally picks up the grasshopper pie because its my favorite.

Phosphates?! What is that? Haha. Me and two friends came here to get some ice cream. We got the pumpkin in celebration of the Fall season. It was really good. After we finished our ice cream we came across Phosphates in the menu. We didn't understand. Really? Isn't that an element? But hey, it came in different flavors. Of course we opted to do it. We went with grape. It was definitely not amazing. But it was a good experience?

Great place. I went on a Friday and there were a bunch of people there. It's a nice little diner and I just love the little stools for the table. I wish they had more of them (better yet I wish I could take one home). The Ice cream? Delicious. I opted for the Peppermint flavor. Nothing like the taste of Christmas when it's not Christmas! Tasted great and there were even bits of Peppermint in there! Surprised me. Great stuff, lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, and best of all the portions. They don't like to go easy on your cravings. If you're on a diet you should avoid this place. For those of us who aren't on a diet, enjoy tackling the various flavors and HUGE (No joke) portions.

Being from the mid-west, I'm a big butter brickle fan. Not too many places offer it. I can't buy it at stores (which is insane), and for those few places that do make it, it's just not the same. Sorry to say, but Vic's did not offer me a classic "homemade" butter brickle experience. It was a nice touch to offer free water though.

I have been here a couple of times and I have enjoyed their thick shakes and I love the banana split. I also love the sundaes with hot fudge and nuts. Parking is on the street though.

Best ice cream place in Sac. My favorite is peppermint ice cream- love that they have this all year round. Rocky road is also delicious.

It was really hot. How hot you ask? Hot enough to bake a pizza on the sidewalk, hot enough to melt the tires on my car, hot enough to make James Brown sound like Perry Como. 108 degrees at 4 o'clock!!!! Now for the good news, ICE CREAM!!! Today's sampling was a banana split, peanut butter cup, orange sherbert and Franch Vanilla ice cream, whip cream, nuts and.....................................................WHAT? No cherry? Minus one star for not having cherries. Otherwise, come here for great ice cream!

If I could only have one food the rest of my life, it would be ice cream. I may not live long, but I'd die happy. I was not disappointed by my new friend Vic. Oh so delicious. I got this cappuccino flavor that was simply heavenly. This is seriously good ice cream, not that syrup crap that you get at the grocery in the gallon bucket. Vic's serves up the real deal. There servers were super attentive two, we were helped quickly and then offered to be helped again by another server who didn't realize we were already waiting for our order. He may have missed that we'd already been served, but to me, that's attention to your customers and making sure they're taken care of. That, I appreciate. Oh Vic's, can you mail some ice cream to Chicago, so I can delight in your sweet deliciousness again?

First place in sacrament that i could find a Ham Salad sammich. heh. Vics is the neighborhood ice cream shop. Even in December it has a line. There ice cream is fantastic, their sammichs are homestyle, and it has a lot of regulars. Great stop on your stroll or drive through Land Park.

  • Terri M.

I give the 1 stars because the food is good. Their customer service is horrible. If you want someone to serve you right away go to the counter, don't sit in a booth. The Server needs to speak up. The other star is because the server makes the food right when you order it. Also they should sell a piece of pie.

I can't decide what I like best about Vic's. Maybe it's the delicious Polysorbate-80, or perhaps it's the partially hydrogenated coconut oil? No, it could be the corn syrup and whey stabilizer. The mono and diglycerides are simply lip-smacking. Mmmmm...guar gum. What you have just read are the actual ingredients of Vic's chocolate chip ice cream, as written on the label of a 64 oz. tub that I am presently holding in my hand. And momentarily, it will be composting in the Sacramento landfill. No wait---I forgot, these ingredients don't compost. They turn into plaque on your arterial walls. If you find Vic's soul, please return it to him or her.

best. ice cream. ever. fantastic vintage decor, killer rootbeer floats, and an awesome menu of delicious food (grilled cheese -- YUMMM) to get your noms on. plus it's smack dab in the middle of LP, so it's a perfect spot for a lazy Sunday with the kiddos. Dont forget to drop a coin in the vintage gumball machine on your way out! If Doc Brown pulled up in his Delorean and asked me where I wanted to go, I'd totes vote for going to the grand opening of this joint back in '47.

My husband used to live close to Vic's once upon a time, so in a fit of nostalgia we went over last Saturday. I had a double-scoop of coconut and peanut butter cup. Both were slighty too sweet and the coconut was not coconutty enough. My husband had a toasted almond sundae and the flavor was excellent. The place looked a little disheveled, grimy, especially the area behind the counter, where they make the shakes and such. I don't think we will be making a special stop at Vic's any time soon. This may sound like sacrilege to a few, but for my money, Coldstone has far superior quality.

My family & I love Vic's! I feel like I've tried just about most of the flavors, but my favorite is of course a popular seasonal called Cappuccino Chip. When I'm forced to choose a different flavor I also love, Mocha Chip, Raspberry Ribbon & Mint Chip. I wish there were more seats because we rarely get to sit down but we're ok with taking it to go too.

Awesome local ice cream shop! All of their ice cream is made in their own shop. My favorite flavor is raspberry ribbon, but really all the flavors are good. The child's scoop is really big enough for me.

  • Thomas S.

Vic's is great if you like super-rich, overly sweet ice cream in traditional flavors. Their cookies and cream was good, but everything else that we tried left a lot to be desired. Furthermore, the experience suffers from their lack of flavors on display. My favorite thing about visiting the ice cream shop is seeing what I think looks good. Their space is very nostalgic and their menu is shameless assortment of dive diner food. Overall, Vic's is nice for the area, but is far from being great ice cream.

Like all the other reviewers on here, I, a Sacramento native as well, have fond childhood memories of Vic's Ice Cream. When I took piano lessons in the area as a 3rd grader, my dad would take me to Vic's across the street afterwards. I remember coming here with my cousins from time to time, too. Ah, I haven't been in a couple of years. Vic's has been around for over 50 years. The people that work here are so friendly and personable, and the ice cream is the best I've had in the area. It beats chains like Baskin Robbins and Cold Stone, IMO. The ice cream is creamier than Leatherby's. Maybe it's the family atmosphere and nostalgic feel when you walk in. They make their own ice cream here. My favorites are mint chocolate chip, chocolate chip cookie dough, and cookies and cream. If you're eating in, they are pretty generous with their scoops - one is just enough for me. They also have pre-packed containers in a freezer if you want to enjoy their yummy ice cream at home. I miss Vic's. I need to come back when I visit home again.

VICS is sooo delicious. They never fail me. So creamy and yummy and perfect. They are very consistent in their service, serving sizes, and taste. Peppermint stick is heavenly. Edit: but can they please not have weird holiday hours??????????????? I only come back for breaks (because of school) and i never get my vics fix because they're always closed!

Dammit. I drove all the way from East Sac to get one of Vic's "famous" ice cream cakes for a loved one's birthday. It was highly anticipated, but when we all sat down to our slices of mint chocolate, it proved disappointing to say the least. The cake was dry and crumbly, the ice cream was, well, icy. The frosting was hard and tasteless, and the lettering looked like something you'd see on cakewrecks.com . I tossed more than half the cake into the bin, uneaten. And that was really a drag for the birthday boy, as he loves him some cake. Freeport Bakery, I am sorry I strayed. Forgive me.

The fondest reviews of this place are coming from people who grew up going here. I understand that it's been around for over 50 years and has quite the following. I visited yesterday (in the company of a friend who grew up going there) and I can see why locals love it. The decor is certainly nothing special, but the ice cream is great. I had a chocolate and peanut butter malt, and it was the best malt I think I've ever had. I can't comment on the rest of the food, but I can tell you I'd definitely stop back in. 4 stars for the malt alone!

With ice cream scoops this big, forget about a cone!--order the dish. The cherry amaretto is divine with tiny bits of walnuts, large and juicy, dark, ripe cherries, and a bold amaretto taste throughout the gorgeous pink ice cream. It's been a few days since I ate this, and I've been craving it ever since. Super-yum! We ordered a half-gallon of the cookies and cream to take home, but it didn't hit the mark like the cherry. There were sections that had large crumbled cookie, but most of the ice cream didn't have a chocolate cookie flavor at all. I've eaten my fair share of cookies and cream ice cream, and this one really disappointed. It had a wonderfully, creamy texture, but I missed the cookie! Next time, I'm sticking to the cherry amaretto.

I like old ice cream parlors and Vic's is just that. Had a scoop of peach ice cream a scoop of coffee ice cream - delish. To me Vic's and Gunther's are the same quality. Both are yummy.

I'm a newbie to vic's and the whole sacramento area. I was recently introduced to ALOT of Sacramentos tastiest spots to get my grub on. This is one of the tops. Its hard to rate the ice cream shops up here because theyre all smaller mom and pop style shops with their own different flair at each. As simple as it is, Their hot dog sandwich was pretty damn tasty. One of my real favorites here thought is the orange sherbert freeze! damn! that thing is outstanding......orange sherbert and some soda and they blend it with the milkshake mixer for what seems forever. you get it back and its basically like an orange sherbet shake. oh yeah, cant forget about their fresh ice creams too, also very good and one of the best in the area.

Vic's is a pretty small ice cream shop, so it can get pretty cramped (you might not find a place to sit). The employees are down to earth and helpful. There are many ice cream flavors to choose from, including low-fat varieties, but I always stick with cookies n cream. I can't say that Vic's is the best ice cream shop around, but I enjoy coming here with my fiancée because of the memories and sentiment we've created at Vic's.

Cute little ice cream parlor. Been here a handful of times, most recently with extended family in tow. Probably not the best idea to bring a party of 6 here, we had to sit at the counter which made conversation tough. In any case, it was enjoyable as it's a rare to find a place that offers real phosphates and specialty sodas. My Aunt really enjoyed her chocolate coke, and husband had an orange phosphate, I'm a traditional, and stuck with vanilla ice cream. Lunch sandwiches were OK, but not great. I actually did not like mine at all, but I can see how others might. I would have probably rated this place as a 3 if it had not been for the customer service. My adult cousin is apparently very picky (I did not know this) and refused to eat her meal after one bite. Ugh. But, the server offered to take her original order off the bill, and replaced it with another sandwich. Also, the younger 8ish cousin immediately accidentally dumped a pile of sugar in her iced tea, and it was also replaced free of charge with no grumpiness. So, as an ice cream parlor, 5 stars, as a lunch place 3 stars, but bumped to 4 for customer service.

    (4)
  • Ezra B.

Sorry friends, not going to dish out the 5 stars but the four stars is telling. I felt like there wasn't too spectacular about this place. Good ice cream sure, fast service why not, price for amount yep, overall it was good, not the best. Happy about it though. If I have another ice cream fix then I will be back or try others. Solid place though.

  • Declan G.

This place is just okay. The prices are really low, which is good if you're really hungry and just want a cheap meal. But it seems like this place is more focused on the kitsch factor than the actual food. The sandwiches are good enough, and the menu is sort of a throwback to old ice cream shops, which is cool. But it just seems like no one working here really cares if the food is any good or not. I'm not saying the food is bad, but I'm not saying it's good, either. It's the definition of mediocre. It tastes fine, and you'll be full afterwards, but it's nothing spectacular. It's sort of a shame because this place could be really great if they just gave it a bit more TLC. Also, why does this restaurant smell like a wet dish rag all the time? I really hope it's not why I think it is, which is that their dish rags are actually creating this smell. Every time I go here, they wipe down the table with the same rag. It's incredibly off-putting.

Vic's Ice Cream is an institution in Sacramento. I LOVE their blackberry ice cream. The parking can be a little difficult and you are likely to find a bunch of kids there as I think there is a school nearby, but definitely worth a visit!

Pretty cute place, delicious ice cream, decent prices. It fits in perfectly with the rest of Land Park. Only been the one time, but I plan to return some time soon--it really hits the spot during a hot Sacramento summer afternoon. :)

The story, as far as I know it, is that Vic's used to be owned by a small family and no longer is. Before that time, like when I was a kid (early to mid 90's), their ice cream was super delicious and really cheap. I've gone in there just a few times since I left middle school, and have always been really disappointed. They're still decent but the people who work there are no longer high school (or middle school!) kids looking to make some extra money, and the ice cream is just not as rich or flavorful. And it's more expensive. And still just as crowded as ever. I didn't grow up with Gunther's, but when I'm in Sacramento, that's where I get my ice cream now.

    (2)
  • Aaron W.

The people that say to go to Gunther's instead, haven't tasted what I've tasted. Let's see, I've been To Vic's easily 100 times and I live about 100 miles from it. I've been there more times than my cousin who lives in sacramento, and let me tell you this, I've been impressed every time. When you drive by Vic's you really don't notice it because it's not that big and it doesn't have that big of a sign. when you go inside the restaurant it looks like one of those old ice-cream parlors because it is and there aren't many of these now a days. There aren't Many seats so if it's a really hot day you won't get a seat inside or outside. They have a bar with about eight seats and five booths you can sit in. When you come in you can seat yourself at the bar or in an open booth. Then they will serve you. They have a variety of very good sandwiches. You might not think that this kind of place serves food, but I enjoy the hot dog sandwich the most. Definitely get lunch here if you want to eat somewhere fast. To get ice cream you can either get it to go at the counter or order it at the bar or booth. Let me tell you this, every time I go to a place that serves ice cream, I compare it with Vic's to see if it's any better. I haven't found that place yet. The ice cream just gets better and better. I Normally get a milkshake. The coffee or the mocha chip is my favorite, but other good flavors for both ice cream and milkshakes are the mint chip, French vanilla, and fresh peach sorbet. Fast service, good food, and a clean restaurant, it can't get much better. If you want to get a quick scoop of the best ice cream you've ever had, go to Vic's. You'll thank yourself you did.

Been there a handful of times. The ice cream was better than average and a decent price. I really enjoyed the mint chip and a fudge ribbon. Parking's not too bad, although it's on the street. Annoying teeny boppers hang out there so I'd recommend going during school hours or sometime after 6. Nice place but not too much seating and the booths are really tight (and I'm a petite woman). Haven't tried the food but I do drive out there to get a good ice cream cone. The double scoop is humongo!

Anytime I hear someone call Vic's an 'institute', I can't help but reply with, "Say wha?!" From the ice cream to the food to the employees, there's nothing cute, quaint and delicious about this place that which Vic's is so proud of and claims as their reason for reputation. And it always seems to be the same crowd of adolescent soccer girls, old people and self-important, spoiled soccer moms. The ice cream is horrible, I get sick of it by the third spoon. The food is actually remarkably similar to what my 10 year old sister prepares for lunch. And all the employees depress me, which is really an odd emotion to be feeling when you're eating ice cream, thee happiest food around. It seems like they were once men of ambition and readiness to finally leave Sacramento, but alas had only gotten as far as Land Park that day. To the patrons of Vic's: What're you thinking going to a place like this? To the workers of Vic's: I feel your pain but still don't want you to serve me my ice cream. And to the ice cream and food at Vic's: Umm, no thanks.

With an array of tasty home made grilled sandwiches on the menu and drinks such as "Phosphates" or "Ice Mists," this spot is perfect for your lunch time meal followed with an afternoon desert. I grew up only a few blocks from this place and always remember bringing in my report card with satisfactory marks and receiving my free cone. The ice cream parlor undergoes a renovation/refurbishment once a year and it always boast a clean friendly family atmosphere, Be ware of summer time crowds as Vic's may get packed with coaches treating their teams out for the homemade ice cream made from the local milk distributor. Support local business I say...and that's what Vic's values as a family owned business celebrating over 60 years in service to the Land Park community.

  • Casperde F.

I,ve lived here thirty five years and the only thing thats changed is----- The ownership. The ice cream. The level of attention to cleanliness and investment in maintenance. The ridiculous cost of doing small business in California forcing operators too produce a vague shell of the memories we hold dear. Whats keeping this root beer afloat is our recollection of when this place WAS heaven on earth.

    (2)

Not only is the ice cream great, but the staff are phenomenal, they made a custom ice cream cake for me next day at no extra cost even though it is normally a minimum 2 day order.

Vics is a Land Park must! Go and try every flavor they have, but first stop and have a grilled cheese, or a ham or a tuna sandwich. They'll give you a side of ruffles chips; add a cherry coke to make it an unforgettable treat. My favorite is the coffee ice cream! Yummm. I want some right now. 5 stars for its unchanged 50's decor and perfect ice cream!

Most Sacramento natives have either a Vic's allegiance or a Gunther's allegiance. While I do love Gunther's, it doesn't hold a candle to the love and lust in my heart/tummy for Vic's. I've been eating hot dog sammiches and cherry phosphates here since I had teeth and possibly before then. If you don't like hot dogs, then their specialty is not for you. They're tiny little square sammiches of bread of your choice (toasted or not) filled with mayo, mustard, lettuce and sliced lengthwise hot doggies. Heaven! Wash it down with a cool and fizzy phosphate (cherry is a personal fave) and you've have got almost the perfect meal! For the perfect meal, you need to add one of their scrumdiddiliumptious ice cream cones. Creamy and dreamy in all sorts of flavors listed out on their old fashioned (and I think original) black menu board with white letters. If you ever have occasion for a special dessert, say a birthday or something, get their Chocolate Mousse Pie. You will NOT be sorry.

All time favorites: Frappes and Raspberry Ribbon Ice Cream Pie... mmmmm.... Favorites flavors: banana and lemon chiffon (both seasonal) Yes, you can count on pretty long lines-- especially during the freakin' hot summers of Sacto. If you're waiting to sit at one of their 4 or 5 booths or at the counter then expect to wait even longer. There are plastic tables and seats outside, but they don't serve those tables. Unless for some reason there happens to be a table available when we get there, my orders are always "to go". Lately I've been going to Gunther's to beat the crowds, but they don't offer frappes or raspberry ribbon ice cream pie. :( But they do serve banana and lemon custard ice cream year round. If you really have to get a Vic's fix but don't want to deal with the crowd, go Burr's Fountain on Folsom Blvd. They also sell Vic's ice cream, and their dining area is much larger. They also serve a lot of the same stuff (sandwiches, etc.) as Vic's. Heck, their menu's practically identical. The owner, Jim Burr, used to work at Vic's when he was younger. I'll swing by Burr's if I'm in the area but otherwise it's too far of a trek just for ice cream.

One of the true classics in Sacramento. Vic's Ice Cream is as authentic as it gets, dating back over half a century, with one of the most welcoming and friendly neighborhood atmospheres around. Everything at Vic's is simple and Old Fasioned, and done to perfection.

Great ice cream, fast service. I've had the hot dog sandwich before also, and that was really good. Best of all, the prices aren't too bad. Only problem, is very limited seating, especially during the spring and summer months.

5 stars for nostalgia. 3 stars for food. 4 for ice cream. sacramento native that i am (no shame in that!), i have been eating at vic's for over 20 years! i remember taking my raggedy report card to them as a kid, when they would give you a free cone for all A's and B's. back when a cone cost 75 cents. back when they didn't hire chicks, only teenaged boys. so much has changed, but not the ice cream or the neighborly vibe! i'll be honest, the food is nothing to write home about. but the turkey is made in-house, as are the soups in the winter months, and that counts for something. i like a grilled cheese on sourdough (ask for the red sauce for dipping), or any of the special sandwiches. i love the retro drinks: lime rickey, phosphate, malts and sherbet freezes. if you like your shakes extra thick, order a frappe and watch a poor waiter wrestle to hand mix your drink for you. but my favorite thing at vics is a muddy mocha milkshake. it's too cold in the bay area for these neighborhood ice cream parlors, though we seem to be awash in gelato lately. ben and jerry's? corporate chain! fentons? i will never understand the allure of this place, but that's a separate review. the ice cream at ici tops vic's by a long shot, but ici doesn't offer downhome comfort. ici is a sleek greyhound of an ice cream shop. vic's is a land park establishment, a parlor, a classic.

Vic's has been around for over 50 years, I'd say closer to 60 at this point, which should give you an idea of how wonderful their ice cream tastes!! Need more? Well, okay, but you asked for it. My husband, who I would consider an ice cream expert, absolutely loved it (today was the first time I was FINALLY able to take him there). He tried one of their seasonal flavors, Cappucino Crunch, and we ended up buying a gallon to take home (remember, seasonal flavor). I enjoyed their peanut butter cup ice cream and our daughter had mint chip. Vic's isn't a large place (a handful of booths, and counter seating), but they have several chairs and benches outside. Parking can be challenging, so be forewarned. However, if you walk a bit, it's worth it, and you'll feel less guilty about the extra calories you are sure to consume!

I have been going to Vic's since 1960. The food and service are great. You will probably have to wait, since there are very few booths. It is worth the wait and there Ice Cream and fountain drinks are awesome. Give it a try you will love there grilled cheese dog sandwiches.

My chocolate chip wasn't anything super amazing, but my boyfriend's strawberry ice cream certainly was! It's one of those places that I might stop by if I'm in the area but wouldn't seek out purposely...

Moms used always talk about LandPark in the mid 50's, and how everyday at Vic's she'd order a Hot Dog sandwich for a nickel or a cheese dogs for 7 cents. I guess the prices have changed a bit but the taste according to her hasn't. Whether you like it or not you have to admire a non-chain restaurant lasting 60 yrs, without changing their menu. BTW: This place blows up on weekends and for lunch so be patient.

I've been bring my little boy there since he was big enough to sit at the counter. Great Hot Dog Sandwiches and Phosphate Sodas - try the grape, it's the best. Their Peach Ice Cream is my All Time Favorite and I just wish they had it all year long. Delicious!

Vic's has great ice cream and has a neighborhood atmosphere thats best when you take the dog on a walk, get a cone and enjoy it on the walk home. Food Score: 4 Plain and simple its ice cream. They do have sandwiches and hot dogs but they're known for the ice cream. They have quite a few flavors with the traditional chocolate, vanilla, rocky road and strawberry with a few great ones thrown in like almond and cookies and cream. Service: 3 It is a bunch of kids but typically pleasant and attentive. Ambiance: 3 They do try and go for the 1950's soda fountain but its just a corner parlor that seats probably 20 total and it mainly conducive to having your ice cream to go. They typically are filled with parents and their kids coming from gymnastics peppered with a few mature folks and people like me walking their significant others and their dog. Value: 4 Cheaper than Baskin Robbins and a generous scoop. Their milkshakes are great and a meal replacement. Return: Yes, during the summer its great, and for the fall they have pumpkin and eggnog ice cream that I'm anxious to try.

eating a HUUGE double scoop of rocky road in a cute old school diner/ice cream parlor made my summer day complete. that is all.

Be still my heart. This was my neighborhood ice cream parlor when I was a kid. I would ride my blue sparkly Schwinn pea-picker up there. I always got butter brickle and my sister got peppermint stick. One time my ice cream fell straight off the cone into the gutter and they gave me a new scoop, sweetness. The muddy mocha frappe's are amazing (if you like malt, yumm) and I have to say there's something about the fried hot dog and cheese sandwich on toasted rye. They still have the checkered floors from what 1942?, penny gumballs, oldschool water glasses. This is one of the places both me and my gramma can agree on. Vic's is a charming, old-fashioned ice cream parlor where you can still get a chocolate ice cream soda. I'm really into the mint chip ice cream pies with the fudge on top and salty almonds on the bottom. Oh, my.

Unfortunately for my waistline I recently moved a stone's throw from this fine establishment. It certainly has retro appeal and a great feel as soon as you walk in the door. The ice cream flavors are eclectic...I love the Cherry Amaretto and the Chocalate Mousse. There is a flavor on the menu called Jik Jak- what this is I have NO idea! We asked one of the servers and he said he was new and it wasn't the "season" for that ice cream, so I'm still in the dark. It's okay though, I kinda like the mystery! I love that the first thing they give you is a glass of water, cause everyone knows you HAVE to have water with a sundae. Vic's food however is it's own animal. I won't knock it however because I understand they are merely keeping things simple. That helps keep the charm of the place. Oh..and by the way, those in the know order a side of "the red sauce" I overheard a server say its a mixture of ketchup, chinese mustard, worchestire sauce and some other such things. So if you like spicyness it's for y'all. Overall it's good times! I rated it a little lower because sometimes it seems a litle dingy and could use a good deep-clean.

Vic's could only be enhanced if it were a drive-in, tray-on-the-car-door ice cream shop and diner. The old-time surroundings will leave you nostalgic for simpler times, and the ice cream and treats are excellent. The staff is kid friendly - many of them 'kids' themselves; you can imagine a few of the servers in paper caps and aprons mixing a tall shake or making a banana split in the '50s. Another plus is that the staff is fiercely loyal to frequent customers - often addressing them by name and order.

Vic's is similar in quality to Gunther's, but I still prefer Gunther's. Vic's has more of a neighborhood crowd, and they are all very partial, but there's just not as much selection, and the ice cream I ate didn't really wallop me with its goodness. Plus, I tried the hotdog sandwich. My recommendation: don't. All of that aside, they have the cool "hang it on the edge" high chairs. My kid loved that. She ate most of my ice cream anyway, and a lot of my hotdog sandwich. We ate at the bar.

GREAT Ice cream! Little old school ICE CREAM SHOP. Great food. Kind of expensive, very FRESH! located in quiet south sacramento land park area

  • Leon M.

The negative reviews of this place are interesting. Complaining that a ice cream shop is full of kids is kind of like moaning about a dog park being full of dogs. If you're looking for some uber-chic hang out spot or the latest in food trends, this definitely isn't the place for you. That being said, Vic's is great for what it is, a neighborhood ice cream place. Most of the time the place is packed with locals (it's not hard to be packed with six booths and ten counter seats.) The ice cream is solid, not extraordinary, and the sandwiches are good. The sandwiches are definitely your old-school variety: hot dog and cheese, egg salad, reuben, etc. I'm not personally crazy about the greasy chips that come with the sandwiches, but I'm not a big chip guy. The service is decent considering everyone working at Vic's is under 20. And who really cares about service in a sandwich/ ice cream place anyway? If you're just passing through, get a milkshake. Can't be beat.

I used to work at vic's when I was 19. I have not really visited the place since. I CAN tell you that there are NOT a bunch of "chemicals" added to the ice cream which make it soft, that is absurd, and whoever wrote that must be inhaling some pretty strong "chemicals" to not realize that ice cream gets soft due to temperature differences. Usually the vanilla/chocolate/strawberry will be softer than the other flavors since they are in smaller tubs in a smaller freezer, and are acessed more often. I think vic's has some of the best ice cream I have ever tasted. I don't even like ice cream (it makes me thirsty) so I am not really an ice cream snob, but I love vic's ice cream. The sandwiches are not bad at all in my opinion, I ate them every day for a long time and never got tired of them. The soup is pretty good as well. Sometimes the place gets slammed though (especially in the summer) and it takes a long time to get your order in. Sadly, the prices have gone up a lot and are bordering on ridiculous now. Also, I'm not a huge fan of land park and the "old money" types that frequent vic's, lots of snobs and jack asses, but that's the way it goes. And for the love of god, if you weigh over 250 lbs stop waddling in and snarfing pints of ice cream to your face, diabetes is coming for you.

I used to live down the block from this place and would walk there at all times of the day and night to get some awesome ice cream. I've had just scoops (mmmm) and sundaes(awesome). I took off a star for the pretentious hipster douche bags that work there. They think they are awesome and hot for working at an ice cream shop. i don't get it.

I could never say anything bad about Vic's. I've been going there since I took gymnastics at Byers. I've only ever ordered a cheese dog and a mint chocolate chip shake (I'm not one to venture). It is always yummy. Not the most filling thing in the world. The service is good. The wait can be a bit much because the place is so small.

Vic's is such a nostalgic place for me. When I was in elementary school, I loved going there for an egg salad sandwich (which was just my excuse for going there as I really just wanted peppermint ice cream) . I loved it then and I still love it today. I wish it was bigger because I always worry that there will be no seats available which would force me to stare at people to get them to leave so I don't have to go somewhere else for my "egg salad sandwich". yay vics!

a great little, classic ice cream parlor. i grew up going here, as have many many people that i know. my personal favorites are peanut butter cup and muddy mocha. if i had to recommend one, get muddy mocha. they also have food if you wanna eat here, but i have never had it myself. generous portions, great ice cream. i would definitely recommend or take friends here.

The BEST ice cream in town...Nor Cal...probably California! Their Mocha Chip hot fudge sundays are unmatched. I have been going to Vic's for 30 years and my father remembers when they opened...they haven't changes that either of us have noticed. They are the BEST!!!

This place has the best Mint Chip in the world. I dont like that it is hard to find parking, and they dont stay open late. and if you are lactose intolerant, then this is not the place for you. other than that, this place is really good. I reccomend the Hot Dog Sandwich. I know, it sounds wierd, but you need to try it. I also like that they have waiters, and the people are pretty nice

OK, so it is not yupee, gentrified or fancy. Just great, really great ice cream. The best part is the history-- they've been doing great ice cream for 60 years. They had it down long before the era of boutique joynts lined the streets of cities nationwide.

This excellent unpretentious ice cream parlor is hidden away in a suburb of Sacto. It's really got the old fashioned feel of the 50's about it, like the Hooper painting the Nighthawk. It's small inside but sweet with nostalgia. They have good food and even better ice cream. Their hotdog sandwich, served with potato chips is very tasty, be sure to ask for the red sauce to go with it. It's some sort of kicked up ketchup and very first-rate! They serve tuna, egg salad and cheese sandwiches as well. Their ice cream is delectably sinful. They have a Black and white sundae that is overwhelmingly delicious; it's a concoction of chocolate and vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, and marshmallow sauce. They have many different flavors of ice cream as well, usually doing some great seasonal items like Pumpkin in October, and Pecan Pie in November. I love their chocolate chip; it's as delicate as a kiss and delightfully creamy. Yum.

I grew up 2 blocks from Vic's, so I have so many fond memories of Vic's and have my special favorites. I try to visit every time I'm back in Sacramento. The cheesedog sandwich and coffee milkshake (made from their coffee ice cream, not vanilla - this makes it so good). The multi flavor ice cream cake is a real treat. For a cone, I like their chocolate chip (chips are big and plentiful).

The mint chip is the BEST ice cream ever. I used to go to Vic's when I was 9 years old so have been going there for literally 30 years. It's such a cool atmosphere and the ice cream is excellent. The service is good and it's worth the drive to experience the quality ice cream. I would take Vic's over any other place in town. I LOVE It! My family loves it!

  • Evan P.

My grandmother would always take me here when I was visiting her while growing up so there is a certain nostalgia because of that. Regardless of that, the ice cream here is fantastic and I am not a big ice cream person. I always get a cheese dog and a milkshake. I'm especially fond of the fresh peach in the summer and the peppermint in the winter, but like to mix it up and usually don't stick to just one thing. The place is usually kind of a mess, cleanliness is not their strong suit. But it is definitely your stereotypical soda fountain that you would expect to see in a movie about the 50's.

Absolutely in love with this place. Every time I visit family in Sacramento, my family and I will stop by Vic's ice cream,no matter what time of the day it is. Vic's Ice cream has been here for years. My dad use to live near it when he was little and started taking my sisters and I here when we were in elementary school. The ice cream parlor is located on the corner of the street. You have to park on the street which can be busy during peak lunch hours or hot days but it's not too bad. The short walk you may have to make is 110% worth it. Vic's looks like an old fashioned ice cream parlor with checkerboard floors, bar stools at the counter, and s simple black and white menu of flavors. The ice cream itself is delicious. Prices have gone up since my very first time here but it's still not going to stop me from paying a visit when I'm in Sacramento. The serving size is pretty large and the ice cream is creamy and thick. My favorite flavor is the muddy mocha, but everything is pretty tasty. They also serve food but I have never tried it. There always seems to be a lot of people eating their sandwiches, so they must be pretty good.

I live really close to this ice cream shop and finally got to try it out! I got the cup of joe ice cream on a sugar come. Not bad for $3.25, the scoop was HUGE! The ice cream was super creamy and smooth, I ate every last bite. The location is pretty good but parking is kind of hard! I like to ride my bike here instead to avoid the parking. When I came inside there was a huge crowd of people standing in front of the door and realized it was the line! The register is literally directly once you open the door, which kind of sucks because you can't get through, you just have to become part of the crowd! Once I got to order my ice cream we luckily found an open table (only about 5 tables inside) but the whole time we ate the crowd at the door never went away because the registers location is so bad. Leaving, we had to squeeze between the crowed to exit! The ice cream is super worth it and it's a great spot!

This lace has so much nostalgia of a neighborhood ice cream. My favorite flavor is the muddy mocha, especially as a malt shake! Food items remind me of my childhood, especially their hot dog sandwich.

Ice cream is good, but not as creamy or rich as Gunther's. The ice-cream is icier but still tastes good. They serve a generous amount of ice-cream, which is a plus! I definitely like the interior much more than Gunther's because of more seating availability. Also, it's connected to Vic's Cafe which is awesome if you also want to get some coffee or pastries. I would recommend stopping by if you are in the area.

I love vics and frequent it often being in the land park neighborhood. Ice cream is great...only complaint is that I think they could do better cleaning the ice cream scoop between scoops. Might sound crazy but I hate mint ice cream and more often then not i feel like my ice cream tastes like mint from someone before me (i know its a very popular flavor)

The employees were friendly and even though there was a line we got through pretty quickly. I ordered the Lime Soda with Phosphate. The waiter said they really don't have phosphate but instead citric acid. So why do they have phosphate sodas on the menu? Phosphate soda is a type of beverage (served in a chilled soda fountain glass) that has a tangy or sour taste added to the drink that enhances the fizziness of the carbonated water ~ making it delicious. The phosphate drink was the most popular drink at soda fountains for over 70 years, sadly, phosphate has disappeared! I decided to order the lime phosphate soda anyway with a scoop of vanilla ice cream in it. To my dismay, it was served in a paper cup vs the cold frosty soda fountain glass. It didn't have much fizz at all and was warm!!When the waiter asked me how it was, I told him it was warm even though it had a scoop of ice cream in it. His response was, "well yeah the water is warm but, I thought the ice cream would chill it. You just drank it too fast" Say what??!! Definitely not the best ice cream soda fountain experience and will definitely not be ordering a "phosphate soda" from Vic's again. So disappointed.

My family loved this old time ice cream parlor experience ! We took pur son here as a special treat!!! It was a treat for all of us. This place was packed but in a good way, the kinda way that lets you know that you are in the right place! We got to sit at the bar and watch all of everyone's ice cream orders get made. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The woman helping us o er heard me say to my son "I know the whip cream and nuts is your favorite on strawberry ice cream" when she delivered his she made she his had extra whip cream and nuts. The smile on his face was pricesless as he looked at the sundae he knew was all his! Thank you to this place for keeping an ice cream parlor a traditional ice cream parlor!

I get that this is an old place. Had I done this review after only going once, it would be one star. Anytime I have a negative experience on the first go, I like to go back again just to be sure. First of all, it's tiny. Everyone is lined up out the door, because there is no logical set up for them to take orders. Your order is taken literally at the beginning of the ice cream counter, without the chance to look at the different ice cream containers in the case. When you've got kids, this doesn't go over too well. On our first and second visit, the employees all seemed like they would rather be anywhere but here. As to the ice cream itself, absolutely delicious. But this is definitely not going to be our go to place in the future, simply because of the rushed, inconvenient ordering and the tiny, cramped space. But if you don't care about how you order and just want awesome ice cream, this is the place for you!

I have been going here for 35 years. Unfortunately it has slowly gone down hill with the service. It seems they are over staffed but under enthusiastic when it comes to the most basic customer service. Very seldom do they even come back to the table to ask if everything is ok. For $5.25 you get a very small runny milkshake. In the past they would at least give you the extra in the mixer cup. Now they pour the excess into a small cup and the staff drinks it? The owner should take an interest in properly training the staff. It is a historic business. I would hate to see it fail. In the future I will travel to Gunther's because I feel its a better value.

As a Land Park native I've been coming here ever since I was a little kid! I've always loved their old-fashioned decor and can remember begging my parents to sit at their ice cream bar. Every year for our birthdays, my parents used to buy us their vanilla and fudge (or strawberry) half sheet ice cream cakes which are heavenly!! I love everything about these cakes--from the sugary curly cues on top to the rich chocolatey fudge oozing out from the sides! To this day, I still request these ice cream cakes for my birthday and have yet to be disappointed! The overall presentation isn't all that aesthetically pleasing, as the writing looks as if it had been done by a 12 year old, but the taste definitely makes up for it! I'm giving Vic's four stars because the last time I ordered my cake from here they messed up my name :( The manager offered us store credit but having my name misspelled on my birthday cake wasn't cool.

Great place for ice cream to go! Their single scoop costs 3.25 which just recently went up .50. If you get a single scoop in a cup; it's like getting a double scoop. My other favorite flavors are peppermint stick & chocolate. I grew up not too far from Vic's. When I did get A's in my report card we used to get our complimentary ice cream cones. They are also known for their suicide drinks which tasted a lot like cherry soda. Omg...I can go for that right now. Plus their toasted hot dogs with potato chips. If you have big gatherings, you can pick up ice cream cakes and pies here as well. Love this homey place; they are definitely a staple in Sacramento's Land Park.

The boo swears this place has the best milkshakes. So I gotta give it the test. I will admit it is pretty damn good. I drank the whole large shake like it was nothing lol That was lunch for me! The mom and pop old school vibe makes this place pretty great. Will definitely go back for another chocolate shake.

All I can say is, AMAZING! My boyfriend and I decided to have some ice cream on a warm Sacramento afternoon after work. Since we've never tried Vic's before, we decided to come here. The place pretty small, but it is like hella old. Not sure how old...50 years? Don't quote me on that. But when you walk in, it has that old diner feel which I love! You walk in and the ice cream section is the first thing you see. There are about 5 booths and 10 bar stools. Quite small, but cozy. Apparently there's a cafe in the other room, but I didn't check it out. There's not a lot of choices as I hoped, but enough to get me undecided on what to get. I ended up getting a double kids size, which is similar to a regular single scoop, of butter brittle and peppermint. Both were amazing! The butter brittle tasted like...brittle, but in ice cream form. It was sweet, yet not overly sweet. The peppermint was just super refreshing! You get the benefits of ice cream with a candy cane feeling. There IS a difference between mint ice cream and peppermint. I'm not a fan of mint, but I am with peppermint! My boyfriend got the regular double scoop (figures) of some cherry flavor and cookies and cream. Oh man! That cookies and cream was just out of this world! It's not your typical Dreyer's cookies and cream. It tastes like the ice cream and cookies were homemade! The cherry one, I wasn't a fan of. It tasted like Dr. Pepper, and I don't like Dr. Pepper. It wasn't bad, but I just wouldn't get it for myself. I would highly recommend getting the cookies and cream and peppermint. The cookies and cream taste super homemade, and the peppermint is just refreshing! They also serve small sandwiches and potato chips, old fashion sodas, sundaes, and floats. I would definitely come back!!

Hands down my favorite place for ice cream in Sacramento. My favorite flavors are mocha chip, cherry amaretto and toasted almond. The milkshakes are amazing as well. I usually order the kiddie scoop because there's a lot of ice cream. They are known for their sandwiches as well. I always come here for ice cream or Gunthers. They recently opened a cafe next door as well. Seating and parking can be tricky though. Once it gets packed, the wait can get long but so worth it!

Which ice cream spot do you like better: Vic's or Gunther's? #Sacramentoproblems I've had Vic's ice cream at fund raisers, birthday parties, and other events but this weekend was the first time I've actually visited this Sacramento gem. I love Gunther's particularly for their 50/50 and their extra creamy vanilla ice cream, BUT they have nothing on Vic's ice cream flavor variety! I loved all the different flavors that I got to try. The mocha chip, coffee, toasted almond, peanut butter cup, and chocolate almond fudge...... Yes, I had an ice cream tasting! They were really patient and helpful. The flavor that I fell in love with was the Muddy Mocha. It's like a Mocha Almond Fudge without the almonds! It was creamy, cold, and delicious!

If you are from the area then you know there is a long standing battle between Vic's and Gunther's. I have lived near both and have frequented both since I was a child and frankly Vic's is better all the way around. Vic's has great parlor food and you can never go wrong with a sandwich and chips. They have so many ice cream flavors it is overwhelming and they are very generous with their scopes. My favorite is the Peanut Butter Cup. During lunch and dinner (especially in the summer) this place is packed tight with people so be prepared to wait a while for a table. Or do what I do and call your order in ahead of time and take it to go.

Good old-fashioned ice cream and super friendly staff. I sampled the seasonal flavors: fresh peach and butter brittle... They were alriiiiiight, but I went with a classic mint chip. Not a strong first impression, so I might not come back.

Here's another favorite my wife and I were able to enjoy which is near William Land Park and not too far from the Old Sacramento Cemetary. A friend of mine introduced the place to me back in 2008 and still remember it fondly so my wife and i stopped in for a delicious banana split to share along with a sandwich since she was in the mood for a small meal too. Just great ambiance and a worthy adversary/compliment to Gunther's just up the way in the Curtis Park neighborhood. Here's to more delicious treats ahead! 5 out of 5 for Vic's!

I can usually understand why places have long lines. What surprised me was the lack of a line after I walked in and experienced Vic's for the first time. While Gunther's had a line stretching out the door and down the block, we were able to walk right up and order at Vic's. I guess not everyone realizes just how amazing this cornerstone of the Sacramento ice cream community really is. They have plenty of options, so deciding what you want is the hard part. I went with a scoop of brownies and cream and a scoop of muddy mocha. Each bite satisfied my craving for rich, creamy, old-fashioned ice cream. They make it all in-house, so don't expect that classic ice cream shop feel with Breyer's behind the glass. What you're getting is something you'll never find in any other city - an ice cream that anyone would be proud to put their name on. The servers also deserve a shout out. The young lady who waited patiently while we figured out what we wanted was so sweet and patient. Her smile and service were a great incentive to return on the next unseasonably warm Sacramento weekend.

A nice old-fashioned soda fountain. I was pumped they made phosphates. A decent menu, and cool set up. We ordered a cherry phosphate, a Lime Ricky, and a small sundae. The some staff seemed annoyed with my daughter and I sitting at the counter to watch they prepare our drinks and sundae. I even tried to strike up a convo but was answered by an annoyed look. "It's ok, they are probably having a bad day", I thought to myself. I sat back down at our booth and enjoyed my drink. I did notice a lot of dirt and build-up on the floor. Overall, a cool little spot. Just need a brush up on service and hospitality.

Classic Sacramento ice cream. A little more run down than some of their competition a few miles away, but waaay more indoor seating, and something about the location right in Land Park is just that much more quaint. That and the Vic's hot dog is a classic in the family here... mmmm...

I recently went there with family for the first time a few days ago. Vics has a reputation around sac for good ice cream and it does live up to it. It was creamy and one scoop seems to go a long way here. The only problem is it is a small space with very few tables and was pretty busy for mid day during the week. The staff wasnt the most friendly that day. No smiles or welcome from them but im here for ice cream not small talk with employees so im not tripping about it. Its definitely a place to remember!

Their ice cream is really tasty. They have some unique flavors, not many. I got the muddy mocha, which is mocha ice cream with fudge. It was okay, mocha didn't have that much of a coffee flavor to it. My girlfriend got the chocolate chip cookie dough which tasted like store bought ice cream tbh. The hot dog sandwich was not what I expected. They only use 1 VERY THINLY sliced hotdog for the entire sandwich, which I could BARELY taste. It also comes with lettuce mayo and mustard...I could make a better hotdog sandwich at home. Oh and don't forget the ruffles chips which have enough salt on them to burn a hole through your cheek.

Vic's is timeless. I love walking in and seeing three different generations enjoying the atmosphere, food and ice cream. You can't help but feel good coming here. My parents starting going to Vic's when they were kids, and of course took me when I was growing up. I enjoy the charm and nostalgia of the place. I am also a big fan of the Raspberry Ribbon ice cream and like the hot dog sandwiches. Vic's is just a feel good kind of place and really a great representation of the Sacramento community.

Pretty good ice cream, I think that Gunther's is a little better, but I still enjoy Vic's. The seasonal flavors here are pretty good.

There's something cute and charming about this vintage, old school ice cream parlor. They have a good amount of ice cream select from. I opted for the blackberry and seasonal vanilla + brownies. They did not disappoint! Service is friendly and the place looks clean and well maintained.

An institution that many consider the best in town. Still has the old parlor feeling and lots of home made flavors. Prices similar to BR but the scoops are way bigger. They have prepacked half gallons to go too. Limited outdoor seating. Other food items on menu but have only gone for ice cream. Very close to Broadway and downtown in an upscale neighborhood.

My husband and I loved this old time 50's place he went to as a kid growing up. He ordered the hot dog sandwich and a chocolate sundae and said it was as good as he remembered. They had the best black licorice ice cream I have ever eaten!

As far as ice cream goes, this place has a great niche. My boys and I ordered malts and they were Old School good. The one knock is the cleanliness of the place. Everything from the booths, garbage cans, napkin dispensers, and counters need CLEANED. When I go again, I'll order to go and eat outside for that very reason.

Amazing old style soda fountain & ice cream shop! Wide selection of flavors & toppings with great service. Prices are very reasonable. They also offer limeade, phosphates and other old time treats; childhood memories for this 60 something! They do have a sandwich menu but we had stopped in for ice cream on a whim after a trip to the zoo & fairyland with the grandkids - good choice! We'll be back for sure.

Ice cream was good. Cute, clean joint. Service...not so much. The four employees looked so miserable and unfriendly. If I'm at an ice cream parlor I expect friendly, personable people. Almost annoyingly cheerful. But they couldn't even find it in themselves to show a half smile. Pretty disappointed that the atmosphere was lacking due to a overwhelmingly boring work crew.

A fun, old-timey ice cream parlor in a hip neighborhood of Sacramento. I liked the chocolate mousse the best, but all of the flavours that I tried were amazing. Kudos on making all their ice cream in-house, but minus one star for dieing the "fresh banana" ice cream yellow. Give it a try!

This place has the best service I've received in all of Sacramento. This place is great to stay and work for hours as there is always a table and outlet waiting for me. Their food just gets better and better as they add more to the menu and experiment. This place even has ice cream next door- basically if the zombie apocalypse happens, I'd want to be holed up here.

Been going here since I was a Lil kid with my parents and through out high school. I still go tell this day. Love the hot dog sandwich with a strawberry shake.

Vic is nice to go to when it close by. We have been here a few time and the people are nice. But the ice cream is ok. I had better. But we will come here because it so close to home.

I'm addicted to this place! My favorite is Fudge Ribbon. The portions are large and the price is reasonable. It makes it hard to go anywhere else for ice cream.

Sorry to say but there are much better ice cream places. I'd prefer a sundae at baskin robbins over this place any day which is unfortunate because i'd rather support a local business. The one time I went I ordered a sundae with chocolate ice cream and caramel sauce and it was so goopy. The ice cream melted very fast and they didn't put enough caramel sauce in it. I also felt like the overall quality of the ice cream wasn't very good. For the price of the sundae it definitely wasn't worth it. However I have had their ice cream by itself before and it was pretty tasty. Maybe I'll give this place a second try one day and just order a cone.

This is my go-to place for local ice cream. If I am not ordering a single of Mint Chip, then I'm ordering Mocha Chip --just depends on what I'm craving for.

This place is very good. I like the atmosphere, staff, and menu of yummy cheat treats. I love giving support to local business when I can - and Vic's being close to my house is my go-to for cravings :)

Vic's is just an old fashioned neighborhood ice cream parlor. Its been there forever. Great choices in all the different flavors of ice cream. From a simple scoop of ice cream to the ice cream sundaes, they are all good. Forget getting a Coke or Sprite, they have PHOSPHATE sodas. Try finding that somewhere else. They also make simple sandwiches and hot dogs. The staff is super friendly and usually consists of high schoolers. There are a couple booths and counter seating. The only negative is the parking. Parking can be difficult on the weekends or on a warm day/evening. They also close a little early.
