Alonzos provides excellent breakfast style Americana/mexican cuisine for a very reasonable price. The Chilequilles is honestly my favorite thing to get. They make 2 versions of the dish (red and green sauce) that will both knock your socks off. When I'm in south sac I make it a point to stop by alonzos. Quality food and quality people.

Great place love the food sometimes the staff is a bit dry for me. Sometimes they are on key and other times it seems as if they are not even there, or wait maybe is me that's not there and they just don't see me? Love the food!

This is my go to for Menudo. They are pretty consistent but you must go early before 11 am Sunday morning or it will be all gone. Reasonable prices for the other food and usually packed. It's one of those neighborhood secrets.

Love their Vegetarian Breakfast Burrito! And the staff was really sweet even though it was super packed.

My wife took me here for some pozole this afternoon as this is the restaurant that "introduced" her to pozole...over 15 years ago! So, on a whim, we headed out to South Sac from Carmichael to see if Alonzo's was still around and lo and behold Alonzo's is still in business! The pozole was awesome! We will definitely be going back! The restaurant is in a shopping center on the corner of Stockton Blvd & Fruitridge and is small. It is a bit hard to find; it's right next to a hardware store. The place is a "hole in the wall", and I mean that in an affectionate term, it is clean but old. You seat yourself or stand by a vacant table you would like best and the waitresses do their best to wait on everyone in order. They are very good about waiting on everyone in order but, they are a little slow when it comes to checking on you for refills and such and about giving you your bill. Alonzo's serves American food such as breakfast all day, "diner type", "American" restaurant food and they also serve authentic Mexican food. The staff is very friendly and the owner was working today. When I went up front to pay our bill she asked if everything was ok and I told her that everything was great, which it was! Again, we'll make the drive to Alonzo's...again, LOL.

Several of my coworkers talked about pozole. I've never even heard of it before. I like trying new things, so I ordered it over the phone from Alonzo's when I found that they have it there. If you order over the phone, you have to order the large. I was told it would take about 15 minutes before I went to pick it up. I'm glad I ordered it to go, because the place is compact. If you've never heard of pozole before like me, it's a soup/stew with pork and hominy (dried corn kernels). It's accompanied with shredded cabbage, onions, lemon slices, and salsa on the side. They also threw in some tortillas. The stew was hearty and flavorful. It was definitely much needed because I was feeling under the weather. I have yet to try menudo, so maybe I'll give that a try next time.

Tried this place for the first time today. Pro: Food was good. I had a big plentiful bowl of pozole and my bf had a small chili bean macaroni soup. Both were yummy. And my soup came with plenty of cabbage ( my favorite ) The server was super friendly! She was so nice and helpful. Also very patient. Con: Found the red salsa that comes with the chips disgusting. It's more of a paste. My bf said it tastes like fish. The bathroom is just poorly designed, not much leg room. Overall, Will be going back again soon for pozole ! :)

Decent breakfast fare...love the extra Mexican items. We ordered the pork Chicano served with 2 eggs, potatoes, and your choice of corn or flour tortillas. We also picked up pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream, eggs, sausage. The pork Chicano was served warm...meh...and not very flavorful. Spices were lacking although the meat was super tender. The pancake combo was your usual run of the mill. Nothing special but satisfying. If I return, I'd want to try to pozole. I saw other people ordering it and it looked delish.

Love the Menudo and Pozolé here! My parents have been coming here since they were younger so I gotta keep the tradition alive.

I used to come here when I was a kid. I forgot how good it was! Go for breakfast, chorizo or huevos rancheros. Soo good. Oh the pancakes and French toast are awesome too!

Love the pozole! Next best thing to moms pozole. Its small and usually packed for breakfast but worth the wait. Only downfall is one waitress. An older lady. She is very slow, and not very friendly. We just don't sit in her section anymore! Wouldn't stop going just because of her.

I ordered a dinner plate with an asada taco and chile relleno with rice and beans on the side plus soup and salad. Yes, it sounds like a lot but I wasn't impressed. I ordered a salad with "Spanish dressing" which was some chopped up lettuce with mediocre salsa just poured over it. Not much there. The asada taco was alright but it needed some good salsa to go with it. The chile relleno was pretty good. The beans weren't very well seasoned and the rice was just rice. It's hard to screw up rice anyways. The food did the job but I didn't find anything special about it. The waitress was nice but just wasn't very attentive.

Small neighborhood restaurant. Good food, nice staff, good chile rellenos. Good breakfast. Limited seating on weekends.

Menudo was very delicious, I only ordered a small bowl but the next time I'll order a large bowl with pig feet. I wasn't aware there was an option.

Sunday after church we went to breakfast and lunch I had the pizole and my spouse had the minuto it was pretty yummy my pizole was quite flavorful. The atmosphere has been there for quite some time with a lot of regulars. You can get American food as well as Mexican food in a coffee shop setting I would believe their strong points would probably be there breakfast and it looks like they make a good pizole and menudo. The bathroom could use a remodel as its small and awkward and not so clean. The staff was busy and friendly but a little bit forgetful. Overall the experience we would return

One of the best TORTAS you can ever have, home style very fresh and delicious, the pork chicana also very good and the customer service always on point.

I am not impressed by breakfast places. Breakfast is the cheapest, most boring, easiest to make meal of the day. I'm not a fan of going out and dropping $15 bucks on bacon and eggs just to go home and take a nap. When I do go out to breakfast its either because i'm looking to get nice and tuned up in the am, or some sports are on and i'm looking to get nice and tuned up in the am. Alonzo's coffee shop, one would think, would not be the place for me. WRONG! Holy shit this place is great. I've probably been here 5 or 6 times now it is great. They offer a full menu so you aren't stuck with boring ass breakfast food, but even the breakfast food is awesome. The first time I went I was super hung over so I just ordered pazole. Not only did it cure my hangover almost instantly, it was so god damn good I ordered some to go so I could have it for lunch also.

Alonzo's is the best breakfast in the South Sacramento area. A true diamond in the ruff. From their staple American breakfast traditions to their Mexican options, you cannot go wrong! I enjoy their posole; next to my own it's the best I've ever had and truly helps after a night of drinking.

Well I am not sure what is so special about this place. Upon entering there is awkward staring between me (customer) and the waitresses, they didn't say hi or welcome. I am standing there waiting to be seated, and one of the other patrons told me, "you should sit yourself, I did". So I walk over to an empty table which was dirty, and one waitress said, ill clean that up, and she smears the crumbs and grease on the table with a dirty white towel and tells me to have a seat. OK....... I ordered machaca with flour tortillas. While sipping on the burnt tasting coffee and eating their extra hard tortilla chips, and poverty sized salsa cups. I wondered why I even came in here, oh yelpers, you dun tricked me. Here come the tortillas and food! Upon inspection I see the chef may have forgotten not everyone enjoys the taste of carbon (blackened or burnt tortilla). I asked for some new tortillas that weren't burnt, and I got one back that was microwaved (yes it was extra hot and got all hard in about 1 minute) and the other was blackened. I feel sorry for this place as they cant even get the basics down--chips, salsa, and tortillas. There are so many more choices for real authentic Mexican in this area. I wont be back.

Took 45 mins to get my food. Only reason I waited was due to the recommendations. But I will not be returning. My 3 year old kept crying for her pancakes. Way to keep my kid starving.

Food is good but we got the worst service ever here. This old lady who works there was so rude to us. Maybe we caught her on a bad day.. But still we couldn't believe it. Because of our experience we won't be returning. We prefer places that are nice to us when we come in.

They have great soup and breakfast The staff is very friendly. Treat you like family

  • Erica P.

Alonzo's is an awesome, my family has been going there for over 30yrs and it has never disappointed. The pozole is amazing, the huevos rancheros are very good, and I always grab chorizo and eggs when I come by for breakfast. This is a hidden gem.

  • Amar Azucena C.

This is my spot! Love love love this place. The pozole and menudo is always on point. I usually get the chilaquilas with shredded beef. So yummy and their fresh salas is very tasty and spicy. Hits the spot every time. I think the prices are a bit high for the food. But is is really good.

  • Serina C.

Best breakfast place in Sacramento!!! Seriously, the owner is so cute, she's had this place for like 30 years and still waits tables. The food is bomb. It's mexican american, like your grammas. Love love love this place!

  • Tyler M.

This place got a total makeover since I was last there. Bye bye hole in the wall. Hello little nicely appointed restaurant. I love dives and loved this place with the peeling formica and shabby booths but they did a really good job. I have to say the Carne Asada was just as delicious as before. The breakfast burrito was just as lacking. I think I should take a hint and not order the breakfast burrito. This place was hopping when we came so we sat at the bar and were served right away. I don't know why we stayed away so long. We'll be back sooner than later.

Met some friends for breakfast for the first time in a long time, and am I glad we made the trek. Alonzo's is an old favorite of mine, and it was high time I enjoyed one of their fine breakfasts again. A tip: don't bother with the American breakfast items here. They have been serviceable when I tried them, but there are many other places in town that are better for ham and eggs and the like. The true standouts are the Mexican dishes. To wit: The huevos rancheros - these are outstanding, and to be recommended. The carnitas with eggs - also an excellent choice Posole - if you haven't tried it, do it. The coffee isn't bad either! Be sure to go early on the weekend, since tables fill up quickly.

Decent food I primarily go here for breakfast. I guess I'm just a hard critic because I can get better homemade mexican food. The place is always crowded and sometimes not so friendly. If you are from the area you are sure to run into someone you know.

  • Christina O.

I only come here for menudo ! Its very delish:) We prefer to order to go only if your are not an early bird you will not get a seat! Always make sure to call it in at least 20minutes early-If they say no its ok just come in, be prepared to sit anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes! make sure you check your your bag and make sure they give you plenty of warm tortillas. The last time we orderd 2huge cups of menudo they only have us 2flower and 2corn we all know that dont last long-esp when you have kids

    (3)
  • Vickii K.

Wonderful large bowls of menudo and cocido. Very flavorful broth. A little too much hominy in menudo but still yummy. Cocido had lots of tender pieces of meat, cabbage, squash, carrots, potatos, celery and a side of flavorful rice to add. Water refill took a while. Only real downside were dry, crunchy tortillas.

Food is good. Service is not always the best. One waitress in particular is very slow and ignores her customers. She doesn't check on how you're doing or if you need water. Other waitresses are better

I literally will give this place five stars just for their pork posole, that's how good it is! This place has become a ritual Sunday morning, after church kind of family meal. The bf and I go to unwind from the week and talk about the next. We love that the clientele is eclectic- old, young, all types of denominations and races; it's like a mini-version of the melting pot Sacramento is, and the reasons I love it. The service is always friendly, but expect to wait a little, since the ladies are always slammed. No worries because the food comes out quick. Every week we get the same thing- pork posole and menudo. Their posole is SO flavorful and rich. Every time I take the first bite I have to remind myself how only a week has made me forget how frickin delicious this stuff is. Rich, unctuous, and loaded with tender pork, I stuff myself to the brim every time. The menudo is some of the best in Sacramento I've had as well, and for this one reason- they KNOW how to cook tripe. Well cooked tripe should almost melt in your mouth with only the slightest chew. Overall it doesn't really matter what the decor, service or wait time is like here, I will always be urning for their pork posole.

My favorite spot in sacramento,Ranchero sauce is the shit, all the food is pretty legit and this little dive is the last place in sacramento with real waitress of my era

  • Lolli N.

The boyfriend and I come here every other Sunday just to get our menudo fix! Their mEnudo is on point! Make sure to come in early because the place is small and it gets packed! If you don't like menudo the pazole is really good too! It's a Hole in the wall joint and I've been coming here since I was a little girl and this place will not dissappoint!

Great local place! The huevos rancheros were awesome and there was so much food! The pancakes were a nice sweet touch (gotta balance salt with sweet, y'all!)

A South-Sacramento staple! A great classic diner that does "try to be classic" because IT IS classic. Service: If you order a coffee expect it to be refilled several times. Super-friendly and organized. The staff here should put on a workshop for some of the snobby midtown restaurants on how to handle a rush without making your customers wait. Anyone who doesn't handsomely tip these servers deserves a stiff kick to the groin! Decor: They just redid the inside a few years ago. Still has that classic diner feel. Glad they didn't take down the photos of the original owner. Clean. Simple. What more could you want? Food: Anyone who calls this "fake-xican" should stick to eating chimichanga-sticks at TGI Fridays. How many Mexican restaurants do you know that serve menudo 7 days a week (and know what "menudo con pata" is), PLUS serve cosido and posole? If menudo isn't your thing, the chicken tacos, enchiladas, and burritos are classic. Real Mexican food is simple and delicious. Alonzo's gets it! They also have an American menu to satisfy its patrons. If you're looking for linen napkins, fancy syrup designs on your plate, $15.00 entrees, French-pressed coffee, and a judgmental server with more tattoos and piercings than a circus freak...stick to midtown. If you want good solid diner food at super-reasonable prices with the most efficient servers in town...this is your place. On a personal note: Along with Luigi's Pizza, Alonzo's has been a big part of keeping local business alive in South Sacramento. It's a great family-owned business that puts out a great product. Eat well and walk out knowing you're giving back to something important.

  • Samantha L.

The chips and salsas left much to be desired. Overall I'm not impressed. The enchiladas are not actual enchiladas. It's a corn tortilla that they the slung precooked chicken in and put under a warmer. The sauce tastes like it came out of a can. Not impressed. The rice and beans were good. That was the best part besides the guacamole.

  • Nick K.

Great food and service but wish I could get Pozole anytime of the day, after 9 am the line is too big and there first come first serve no host seating is quite a pain.

    (4)
  • Brett E.

if you can stand the extreme waiting times here, the food is worth it. its just a hole in the wall coffee shop, and the service is horribly slow, so you will be definitely be starving by the time you set.but other than that the food is excellent!!!!

Hi everyone, I probably didn't order what I wanted the best way because it cost me $11 to eat alone :) but I went at 630 in the morning. The little lady maybe in her late 60's was the waitress. She was by far the epitomy of what good service is all about!! She knew every man who walked in by name, she was cheerful efficient and was smiling! The coffee was fabulous not bitter at all and when I left I took my left overs in a box asked for some extra coffee To go and a fork. I made a homeless man's day with a warm breakfast and hot coffee!! Thank you I will come again. Cheers for your awesome service!!

Yay! Thanks to my connection with Yelp, I finally got in touch with my old high school friend! Since she is not a part of the computer age, her sister happened upon my review and looked me up. Esperanza wrote me a letter, and soon we got together for a nice reunion. We certainly missed out on a lot of eventful years. But now, we can stay connected and reminisce about the "good old days" again! :)

Dude! I love this place. My roommate and I like to go here for breakfast. He usually gets the hot pork Chicano and I like to try different things. I've never had anything bad. The service is great and food is fantastic. Every time that I've been, the place is packed but we usually get a table fairly quick.

Great food! Great price! You form one line as soon as a seat opens up seat your self (not cutting ) I strongly recommend the pozole but ive yet to have a bad meal.

I did not know this place had been there so long until I brought my girl friend for breakfast and she told me she use to hang out there when she was in high school. We just might be talking the "stone age". We were immediately seated and given never emptying cups of coffee along with Alonzo's sort of legendary menu. I could not pass up the chicken fried steak with eggs over easy and hash browns with a side of biscuits and gravy. I would have liked my potatoes to be at least a little crispy and my eggs came out with the yokes being completely overcooked. If you only knew how much I love runny yokes you might even consider this a tragedy. However the chicken fried steak was crispy and my biscuits and gravy were good. Our server was friendly and very efficient (I am sure she would have replaced the eggs if I would have asked) and over all I had a pleasant experience and will be back.

Please, do not eat here, I don't like waiting in line. Alonzo's is a hidden treasure just far enough into the hood that suburbanites will not find it and ruin it's charm. I have been eating here since I moved to Sacramento in 1989. It is a family restaurant/diner. It is small, the booths are tight, the counter is old and not that big. It's Perfect!!! The food is a mix of Mexican and American, I never delve to deeply into the American side of the menu, but i can testify that the pancakes are good and the burger is decent. Come here for the Mexican food, it's the comfort food that reminds me of growing up in California. Enchiladas with thick red sauce, crunchy fried beef tacos, fresh pozole or menudo on the weekends. This is making me hungry writing about it. The signature dish for me at Alonzo's is the Chiliquiles breakfast. It is the plate of chiliquiles I have ever had. Iv'e eaten my way from Los Cabos to Dallas and back to San Francisco and no restaurant can beat this plate! Scrambled eggs with fresh diced jalapeno peppers , fresh fried corn chips simmered in mildly spicy red sauce wiith cheese over the top. They stick a few corn chips in so you can scoop up the goodness. The meal has little kick, if you are the "I don't do spicy" type, forget it. Stick with the Huevos Rancheros. If you like a kick in the mouth to start you day, check this out. You will dig!. Beans and Rice on the side, or swap for a pancake stack if you want to carb up. The service is always great, no matter how busy they are. Refills on drinks are speedy and the food is worth the drive. Just remember, if you are waiting inline because you read this review, I get to cut in front of you!

Being as this is my first foray into south sacramento (being as I was not born and raised in California and haven't lived long in sacramento), I yelped a place to have breakfast and this place came up highly recommended. Well, I was not disappointed! I love the atmosphere, service was splendid and the food....excellent!

Hands down the best Menudo in town! Sometime the line is out the door, but it's worth the wait! They have a pretty diverse menu that includes Mexican and American breakfast!

The food is always good and the service is great. Have the chorizo breakfast burrito, it is real good.

Absolutely the best menudo in town. I just eent here last weekend for some. Their pozole is pretty good also. Ive also had their chilaquiles. They are tortilla strips, eggs, cheese, and salsa scrambled together. The food here has all been awesome!

I like this place! They staff is friendly, and the place is cozy. They treat me and my daughter quite well when we come in there for our father/daughter breakfasts when waiting on our car at the Firestone around the corner. The food is excellent, and the prices can't be beat.

  • Adrian A.

BlueBerry pancakes are super grub. But the star attraction is the menudo and pozole, best in town IMO.. I never really complain about burrito's but their breakfast burrito was kinda dry. They need to maximize there tortilla a little more in that area.

Came here on our way back from Tahoe and after a day of snowboarding I was huuuuungry. My cousin's friend hitched a ride with me and two others and though I had just met him, by the end of the day it felt like I knew him forever, that's why when he said this place had the best tacos, I had to try them out. I ordered the 2 beef taco meal, it came with a salad and choice of soup - the clam chowder was one of the best I've had, not too thick and full of hearty ingredients. Please don't tell me now it was just Progresso, I'll feel so molded. The taco was great, not comparing it to Jack in the Box but they were also fried. The beef was slow cooked and shredded, tender and a mouthful of YUM! I made myself a bean burrito with the refried beans, rice and tortillas it came with on the side The other taco, beans, rice and extra tortillas went into a box because I was stuffed. The chips and salsa prior to the gorging and the side chile relleno order had also taken a toll far beyond my hunger. It was greasy which actually kind of grossed me out a little but it gave my lips a nice gloss when I took the bill up to Teresa and thanked her charmingly. Definitely a cutie. Service is awesome, prices are cheap, food is delivered fashionably quick and though the left over taco's shell didn't get crispy after I put it in the toaster oven, all the left overs including my half eaten chile relleno wrapped in a flour tortilla and the 2 dixie condiment cups of their salsa has given me something to look forward to after every future snowboarding trip.

This place is where I grew up. I think we ate here at least once a week! Even my parents came here as kids. Wanda (the owner) watched us grow and it's great to see her still there today! Hands down best tacos I've ever eaten. I love the beef tacos but my sister gets the 1 beef, 1 chicken combo. They top them with their awesome Spanish dressing (get the soup and the salad!) and parmesan cheese. No matter what, you HAVE to get the cream soup of the day. I don't know what the secret ingredient is, but all their cream soups have a wonderful flavor, cream of: corn, broccoli, garbanzo bean, clam chowder. Just get it - whatever it is because it's great soup! Spanish dressing - they put this on their salad as well as garnish. It's almost like a salsa and it's fantastic! They also have great pesole and menudo. I of course prefer the pesole and they almost always have it. I believe they give discounts to uniformed peace officers because my dad and his friends would drive all the way from Folsom Prison just o go here for breakfast. This was a long time ago so they may have changed their policy. It's very affordable and it's our family place to go. You can get the other food items there, they are good too, but there is nothing like a taco from Alonzo's!

Suuuper overrated, food is just ok, sub-standard, below par, mediocre is a streach, its relatively poor quality fake-xican food

Alonzo's is a quintessential dive diner in the cool old-school Fruitridge shopping center. I've driven past the sign many times. Our little family decided to check it out for breakfast after an early morning at UC Davis hospital. When we walked into the joint I noticed most of the folks were very heavy set. They all had disabled placards on their vehicles due to gigantic ankles. Lemme just say these people were all morbidly obese. Which means the food has GOT to be good. Right? It was an adventure. My wife LOVED her huevos rancheros and I enjoyed the pancakes. All good in the hood. Little Freddy liked watching the patrons. Four greasy spoons for Alonzo's!

I went here ther other day for their pozole...The pozole was thick, which isnt normal..I orderd a soda, just to find lipstick on the cup. For those who think this is good pozole havnt had the real thing... This place is said to have the best pozole around the Sacramento area by SN&R...really?!? I had 2 spoonfuls and left..walked over to the pizza place next to it... Way better!

This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants. Their carnitas is really terrific. I like to order breakfast to-go on weekends. I get carnitas, flour tortillas, bean, and scrambled eggs. Yum! Dinner is great too. The only thing I didn't like was the corned beef and cabbage. Go figure. A Mexican restaurant that cannot cook Irish food. My uncle really likes the menudo. I am crazy about the vegetable beef soup they make on Friday's. Large vegetable, nice size meatballs, very nice broth. Yummmm!

  • Kara B.

Cute little coffee shop that serves both Mexican and American fare. . . Lovin' that! The Chilequiles were delicioso. And I'm lovin' that red sauce . . . I pretty much doused it all over everything on my plate, and then proceed to dip my flour tortilla into whatever sauce remained in the bowl. Yeah, it's a bit outta the way, but I'll definitely return to research the rest of the menu.

  • Roberta S.

Gotta come here if you're hankering for some good pozole. Only four stars today because it wasn't quite piping hot, more like a little more than warm. I like it best when it's really hot because once you start adding your cabbage, onions, etc it does cool it down. The flavors, though -- honestly, simple is best. Great broth, pork was well done and the hominy (my favorite part, admittedly) was perfect! Served with an abundance of your choice of flour or corn tortillas and THEY ALWAYS KEEP YOUR COFFEE FULL. Many restaurants neglect this very basic aspect of good service, but at Alonzo's never fear getting enough coffee for your $1.85. We had small bowls ($6.50) and it was plenty. I think a large bowl is big enough to wash your face in, so that's too much for me. So, for two of us with coffee and 20% tip was $20. Bring your friends!!

    (4)
  • Robert S.

I've been there 3 times now. I've had the pozole and the menudo. Both are yummy. If you have an appetite or you're sharing, order the bigger bowl, it only costs a tiny bit more than the small. Will return.

This is a strange restaurant. No one greets you at the door. No acknowledgement, no smile, no nothing. You are supposed to seat yourself, but there is no sign telling you that. The first time we went I was so put off by that that we left. We decided to give it another try and we got a seat within about 15 minutes. My boyfriend asked the server what was going on with the seating and she said that they are so busy they don't have time to greet people. My thought was, you're so busy you can't even smile at someone at the door? And if that's the case, then hire a host or hostess. I'm pretty sure he or she would pay for his/herself very quickly if people were actually acknowledged and therefore more inclined to eat here. The food was ok, although the coffee was really good. I had the chilequiles and they were pretty boring. The server recommended the chile verde pork so if we come here again, maybe I'll try that. All in all, I'm not particularly inclined to come back, but maybe we'll give it another chance.

This truly is as good as a dive gets. This place has been around for 40+ years, set in a pretty crappy and dicey strip mall at the corner of Stockton and Fruitridge. But once you get here, you know you'll get pure comfort food and in a cozy setting. It is really hard to beat a steaming bowl of deep red pozole on a weekend morning. A large bowl ($7.75) is served to you, chock full of pork chunks and hominy grits, and you get some shredded cabbage, onions and salsa on the side. From the first taste you get this feeling that, at least for me, took me back all the way to my childhood --kinda like that amazing scene in "Ratatouille" and that grumpy food critic. Yeah, that kind of feeling. I mixed in the fixins, did some stirring and was in bliss. Every spoonful was both toothsome and incredibly wholesome. (Tip: do not put oregano, which is on the table, in the pozole; that's more of a menudo thing to do. It's like putting mustard on turkey.) My friend had the huevos rancheros. They were apparently very tasty --not a huge portion, but it was just right: two over-easy eggs atop a corn tortilla covered in salsa and served with rice and beans. The tortillas were just OK, actually --we had both the flour and corn. The beans had a homey, lard-y taste and trust me, this is a wonderful thing. Clearly the chefs here are not trying to do anything foo-foo fancy. People just want to come in for some reasonably priced grub, some quick breakfast and lunch and not worry much about presentation. I noticed the guy across from us scarf down the pork chile verde with eggs, which is what I was going to have. It was served with country fried potatoes, which is a little odd since I would have wanted the rice and beans. Oh well, maybe next time. One more note: there was this gringa manager lady who was walking around filling people's cups of Farmer Brothers coffee (OK). She resembled a much older Loretta Lynn-by-way-of-Sarah-Palin, and clearly she was the patrona, since she ended up parking herself at one corner of the counter, where she spread herself out with the Sunday Sacramento Bee, Parade Magazine and her coupons. Except that by the time I tried to go up and pay, she was kind of in the way and as she sat there, she was barking orders at the English and Spanish speaking staff from far away. Of course I'll be back --naturally!

My hubby and I eat here when in the fruitridge neighborhood. All I can say is...Pazole! LOVE IT. I asked for a poached egg to put on top..delish! Great service, wonderful mexican food..not watered down American...lots o mexicans in there eating!! While we were there two guys came in and got a gallon of pazole and a gallon of menudo to go. I will do that the next time I "don't " cook mexican for my friends. Fun place too! Beer with breakfast. Perfect.

Love this place. I eat here every Saturday first thing. This is the place you can get hooked on. I sit at the bar area and Theresa and Rosa are very good to me and all of the others. Food is good and service is solid. Any of you yelpers come on over and I will buy you a coffee. I wish they would update the place just a little. The paint and the furniture are worn yet, this makes the place cool too. Theresa see you tomorrow!! You rock.

Been coming here for years..love it. Quite possibly the best huevos rancheros anywhere. Downsides are that it's not in the nicest neighborhood and it's very small so there might be a short wait. Still worth it IMO.. Best comfort food/Mexican breakfasts in town. Possibly in CA!

I used to come here when I was a kid sometimes with my grandfather. It's been over 20 years and today myself and three of my friends went there for breakfast. Everyone said it was a hit and liked the food. We had biscuits/gravy, omelets and French toast. Good price for what you get and the servers were nice. The place is smaller and has a certain dive appeal to it. I am glad I came back and can't wait to eat here again.

I can only speak about the Huevos Rancheros. I have been going long enough to see two remodels of the place. I tried a few items when we were first introduced to this place. I think it has been at least 15 years or more since I have ordered anything other than the Huevos Rancheros. No place comes close. This is my old reliable favorite breakfast in Sacramento. My wife has tried this dish at The Shack and says they are very different but she likes both of them. Flour tortillas and ask for both kinds of salsa. Be early on the weekends. I usually manage to drop a little money next door at ACE Hardware.

I used to eat at Alonzo's all the time as my big sister worked there for almost 30 years. This place was always a great spot for comfort food for me. The prices were always good and so was the food. Since my sis retired and Alonzo passed I haven't been back in a while but it looks like it's time for a trip up to Sacra for some firme comida, que no?

Ah, Alonzo's, my neighborhood cafe! It's been around since I can remember; the food is always fast and friendly and GOOD. Huevos Rancheros please! I'll have to get back to you on the pozole! If you happen to be in the 'hood, you'll find the seasoned locals will have stories to tell. I don't think I have ever stepped in that place without striking a conversation with someone who had a bit of history to tell. It's obviously a gem for more than one reason. :)

Serious DIVE diner. Nothing that's extraordinary, but everything's good. Good deals and everything's very inexpensive. Good for comfort food. My favorites are the soups. This place has been around FOREVER. But still doing the same thing. This is your typical neighborhood coffee shop/diner. I'd say being in business for over 30 years means they're doing something right. Go check it out.

Pozole, pozole, pozole. Order the Pozole. I've been going to Alonzo's for almost 30 (!) years--back to when I used to work for Manor Drugs as their Advertising manager. I was 23, and basically a glorified ad layout person and signmaker. Back then I didn't know what Pozole was, and I don't know if they had it on the menu. I've rediscovered the place in the last coupla years and that's all I ever order there, so I can't vouch for the other stuff on the menu, but everytime we're in there, there's always someone else near where we're sitting enjoying the Pozole. Now, I make a mean Pozole myself--actually better than Alonzo's--I put more meat in it and usually get fresh nixtamal at La Esperanza--but when we get the Pozole craving between my homemade batches my work partner, the ex, and I go to Alonzo's-about 3 times a month. Unfortunately, it doesn't have any pig's feet--but has big chunks of perfectly stewed pork--more meat than any other Pozole I know of in town(except mine). They probably used the canned hominy--that's what it tastes like. They have real tasty broth and you can doctor it up to your taste with the classic add-ins of dried chile, Mexican oregano, fresh onion and cabbage. The only thing missing are sliced radishes. But considering Alonzo's is more diner/cafe/coffee shop than Mexican restaurant, that's O.K. They still have the 2nd best Pozole (next to mine--did I already say that?) in town. The authentic retro coffee shop ambiance is cool, too. It's a welcome reality check from dealing with the fantasy world of marketing and graphic design! Check it out!

Chorizo & Eggs breakfast it's one of the best i've had, can't go wrong with their fluffy pancakes. Sometimes we have to wait outside the entrance since the place is packed but usually don't have to wait too long. It's definitely worth waiting for if it's not too cold outside. Good service and prices.

Maybe I went on a bad day but the food was terrible. I ordered the tamales and salad with blue cheese dressing. The tamale was completely and totally drenched in red sauce. The actual tamale was okay but it was hard eating it without getting a tons of sauce with it. I heard they made their of refried beans but the beans tasted generic like it came out of a can. My salad came in a little baby plate and after some inspection, I realized the lettuce was old, part of the greens were molded. I'm not sure how to describe the dressing but its texture was almost like liquid plastic. It really lacked the blue cheese flavor. Basically, I was really disappointed with the food. I'll change my rating after I try this place again and if the food's better

Not the greatest neighborhood, but great food. Go during daylight hours. My friends and I went to alonzos not too long ago for a hangover breakfast. I ordered the carnitas. They came with the fried egg right on top of the meat, which is awesome. My friend made the comment that this must be what breakfast in heaven is like. I agree. Also, my friend has a fetish for the breakfast nachos here. I understand why.

i like the breakfast here a lot. Usually catch it on a weekday otherwise you will be in for a wait. Cannot go wrong huevos rancheros. Generous portions. Good service. After you finish gorging yourself on some of the best food in town, walk a few doors down and top it off with T&T Bakery.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
