Always great sushi and sashimi. The owners are welcoming and very friendly. The servers are great. And, the restaurant is super funky...always cool stuff to look at. Gotta love that Ramona has a sushi place! Yay!

What a cool place! Was surprised I hadn't written a review yet. Anyway, love the Hawaiian theme and the interesting menu. I don't eat a lot of sushi so I'm not super picky but I've liked everything I've had. And even more surprisingly, I hardly ever eat fried foods but love their fried calamari - the chili/marmalade sauce is so yummy! Love the beer selection too! It does get crowded, so best to go off-peak. There's plenty of parking in a private lot out front. Only thing I don't like is the fact it's a chore to go to the rest room, have to get the key and go out the front door around the corner.

Food was great, but my experience wasn't that great. Took my 8 year old daughter out for a nice dinner and wasn't expecting to hear curse words out of one of the staff members. There were 6 staff members just standing around doing nothing. Our server was nice but the guy working the fryer was complaining to everyone that there wasn't a schedule created for the employees. The problem with that was ever word out of his mouth was a curse word. Not something my 8 year old daughter should be hearing. Sorry for the 2 stars because the food was great.

3.5 stars This eating moment comes to us through a glowing and immediate recommendation by a co-worker of mine who lives in Ramona. We knew we were going to have to find dinner in Ramona before going to Mainstage for a show, and I figured, who better to ask for dining recommendations than one who lives there, right? I will say that the restaurant is easy to miss, if you don't know what you're looking for. They only have signage for the place on one side of the marquee out front, so if you're coming from the opposite direction, you may just miss it. The restaurant itself is kind of cute, in a mixed tiki room/luau kind of way. They have some comfortable benches in the back, underneath the biggest painting of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole I've ever seen. The servers were friendly, but almost overly-eager to help us (we were asked for our orders a good three times within the first five minutes of having found a table. Kind of hard to view the menu if we keep having to fend off the help...) We decided on some rolls for our meal. We got one Spicy Tuna Roll and one Salmon Skin Roll (of course!), plus one Brenda Roll and one Da Shack Roll, along with hot green tea to drink. Now, let me stop here to say that the place wasn't very busy. It was after 7pm on a Thursday night, after all. There were three or four parties seated and in some form of eating when we got there - not exactly what I'd call "slamming". However, it took almost thirty minutes for us to get our first roll. There was an older gentleman who came in and ordered his non-sushi dish about ten minutes after we had placed our order, and he was fed and out the door before we even heard "Your food will be right out." Not sure if that's because the sushi is so popular that they can't keep up with the orders, or if they need more hands at the sushi bar, but I'm very rarely okay with things like that. The rolls, when we finally got them, were decent. They were worlds better than what we got at Kimiya Sushi a few days before, but they weren't knock-me-down good. The Spicy Tuna and Salmon Skin were both very good - much better than the more expensive, fussy rolls. The other rolls were okay, but it wasn't worth the wait. The flavors were very...muted?...which was surprising. I think that's probably the best way I can describe it. The rolls weren't bland by any means, but looking at the descriptions of everything going on with the rolls, I was excited for a flavor explosion. What we got instead was more of a puff of flavor. Okay, but not spectacular. The green tea was very good - loose leaf tea served in a teapot - which I appreciated (I so dislike seeing Bigelow teabag tags hanging out of a pot of hot water...) The girls working that night were all very friendly and helpful, and they're not shy with the ginger and wasabi paste, which are also good things in my world. Would we go back? It's probable. Though, if we do, I don't think I'd go with the sushi. The hot foods looked and smelled so good, I think I'd have to give those a go.

Great sushi place! I love the crunch Roll and spicy tuna roll. The salmon is so fresh! I recommend this place! Also it is open for lunch I don't know why yelp says it's closed!

Great food friendly service. Try the Bruce lee if your not a cold sushi fan. It's awesome. And the Big Al with tots rocks. If you don't like sushi at all fake out your friends and get a Casey tibbs. Looks like a sushi but it's really deep-fried pulled pork with awesome barbecue sauce you won't be able to stop eating it. 2 suggestions expand and take Call in orders since it's often hard to find a seat. A good problem.

Great food. Not just the sushii. It's all really solid. Best place in town to eat. Try the down n dirty roll or the hoss burger. Also they're open for lunch now and they have beer on draftď

Came here today for the first time. I'm from the Bay Area and was visiting family. I love sushi, well I love cooked sushi so all the special rolls were just what I was looking for. I was looking for spicy tuna, with cream cheese, spicy mayo and eel sauce and the Bruce lee roll had exactly that. I also had the shack roll which was shrimp, crab, avocado and spicy mayo and eel sauce. The rolls were pretty big and cooked to perfection. Everything hit the spot. My serve was very attentive and really nice and sweet. The atmosphere was AWESOME! I loved the beach looking theme. Everything was priced at the right cost. This will def be my sushi spot on the small town of Ramona next time I visit!!!

I've been here a few times, but very spaced out, and for whatever reason never gave it a review. I don't eat sushi, so this isn't a sushi review. I have found the sandwiches, burgers, and fish n chips to be excellent. Customer service has also always been good, although I can tell it's even better for the people they know (which isn't me). I recommend trying it out, you may become a regular.

Was very surprised by this place! Excellent food and excellent service. We will be visiting this place again.

Always outstanding! Omg the big O sandwich was amazing!!!! Soft shell crab over seared ahi with avocado. Yummo!

This place only gets better. Really enjoy the food, Brenda & Ken at Da Tuna Shack! Stop reading these reviews and get your rolls already. You won't be disappointed. Your taste buds will thank you. = )

Eeehhhh it's Ramona so I wasn't expecting much and we've gone in over a handful of times hoping for something better but it's just ok and kinda pricey.. especially if your not even enjoying your meal. We'll keep trying!

Keep in mind I've only been here 2x over a period of a year. Pro's Closest option for Sushi in Ramona Cool Atmosphere Nice and Friendly Staff Con's Rolls fall apart before they reach your mouth if your not quick Spicy tuna is Mushy Fried rolls have the taste of other foods from the grease Service is slow even when its less then half empty. Price: Over priced would probably balance out with the cost to drive down the hill but you would lose your time. All in all it's ok! I will come back when I have to have some sushi and don't want to suffer the drive down the hill.

Been eating here pretty much since they opened, and I will continue to do so as often as possible. This is my number one choice for sushi. The staff is great. I have never had a complaint about them once, and I am rather hard to please. Always smiling and ready to help in any way they can. The sushi is great. Huge rolls, full of delicious goodness. I highly recommend the Enter the Dragon roll. My absolute favorite roll, ever. Their chicken sandwich is very good as well. I've had that a number of times, and it never fails to satisfy. Also, their sweet potato fries are to die for. Do not go without ordering some of those fries, you will not regret it. If I had to come up with a complaint about Da Tuna Shack, it would be that the rolls are too big. I am only able to finish one roll here, where every other sushi place I've been to I need to eat two or three rolls.

I wish I would have visited this place sooner. This is a great place for sushi. Definitely give the Monkey Balls a try and the Bruce Lee Roll. You won't be disappointed.

  • Heidi M.

Sushi wasn't great. I think this place has such good reviews because this is the only sushi restaurant in Ramona! If you've ever had amazing sushi, you will know this place isn't worth 4 or 5 stars. The decor is cute, fun atmosphere, and our waitress Haley was wonderful. It's a small place so don't go during rush hours. The kitchen was on the slow side too. I'm also not stoked with the fact that there's only one bathroom that's not in the restaurant, and you need to ask for a key.

  • Michael H M.

The sushi is just OK. The wait on busy nights is long. We sat at the bar last time where we could watch the "chef" throw things together. That made the whole experience less appetizing for me somehow. We got the soft shell crab roll and a dish called "Seafood Noodles", which was downright crappy. Weird taste and the "seafood" was chopped up into tiny pieces and indiscernible in the mass of foul noodles. I don't think I'll be going back.

  • Melissa C.

Loved this place! I wish it was down the mountain closer to us, but worth the drive! Atmosphere was entertaining and stimulating. Great bar selection, only downside is the place is very small. Interesting apps and sushi rolls.

    (4)
  • Josh S.

I hope you like cream cheese...because it's nearly impossible to get a roll without it. They try to do a Hawaiian vibe (Katsu, Teriyaki, etc.) but also try to accommodate the locals (Po Boys and pulled pork??) We tried the lava bake once. It may as well been a seafood smoothie, served on a plate. It's OK for Ramona, but even living here, we go down the hill now...

  • Zen R.

Maybe it was a bad night, perhaps a busy Friday but we made the mistake of sitting at the bar in front of the fry chef who was clearly not happy, slamming down the fry bins and beating on the grill. He even verbally exclaimed how pissed he was that two tickets ordered house salads - when they were not on the menu. WTH? Customers are paying top dollar here for Ramona... A little friendliness or even a a smile would go a long way if you're cooking in plain view of the folks funding your paycheck... The apps we ordered were a greasy mess and we decided to skip the high priced rolls and move on. To be fair the servers and owners were very nice and on top of their game although the place was impossibly loud... Other customers looked happy enough. Perhaps it was just a bad day for the fry chef.

Brenda and the staff at Da Tuna Shack are SECOND-TO-NONE. Not only is the food fantastic but they have the best Craft Beer menu in Ramona. There is nothing like having a high-quality ale/lager to accent your sushi roll. Even better is how magnanimous and supportive of the local community the business continues to be. My wife and I have hosted a yearly Xmas Armageddon charity and without hesitation, the Da Tuna Shack has always been quick to donate to our raffle. The food, the service, and most importantly the staff, have my highest recommendation. If you are looking for a quality dining experience in Ramona consider Da Tuna Shack. You won't be disappointed.

The wife and I decided to try Da Tuna Shack based on the awesome reviews we saw on yelp. Right when we walked in we were pleasantly surprised by the Tiki lounge feel. We were seated at the counter right in front of the chef and ordered the Pupu platter to start. Everything was delightfully crispy and tasty. It was served with a chipotle mayo that was so amazing we just had to ask for more. The coconut shrimp just bursted with flavor when dipped in the tempura sauce. Also included in the sampler were "monkey balls" that you just have to try to believe. My wife ordered the rainbow roll and was very happy with her plate. The fish was fresh and the roll was beautifully constructed. I order the Lava Bake based on the description. I was hoping to find something similar to the "dragon roll" that I love from the Bay Area but when the waitress brought out a round plate I was confused at first. A little disappointed I didn't get a roll I just went with it and dug in. The various baked fish and sauces on top of a bed of rice was absolutely perfect! I complain about rolls because I don't like having 5 or 6 huge bites and then the meal is over. The lava bake was basically an open face roll that just never quit! A very good value for the price and super tasty. We will definitely be back!

I am a trained sushi chef, but I am not stuck up or picky so believe me when I say, "This is not a real sushi restaurant." They put fake crab in everything and if you ask them not to the laugh in your face and tell you that it is already all pre-mixed. I told them of my back ground and that that was inappropriate and they said they didn't care. Most of thier reviews are obviously written by friend. Do not support these people and maybe eventually Ramona will get a real sushi place. These people are not worth your time or money.

This is the second time we have eaten at Da Tuna Shack (first time was take-out). I thoroughly enjoy dining here. The atmosphere is a fun tiki-bar style and the menu has something the please everyone. The wait staff were very friendly. The service from having our order taken, to receiving our meal then receiving our ticket were all a moderate wait. We had the Pu Pu Platter appetizer, which included vegetable tempura, monkey balls (mushrooms stuffed with spicy tuna, fried and drizzled with a special sauce) calamari and coconut shrimp. Everything was great, and the sauces are definitely unique. I loved the coconut shrimp the best! I also had a wonderful seaweed salad as an appetizer. For our entrees I had the Ransom Roll (a Cali Roll with a great scallops and crab topping) and my husband had a yummy seafood Yakisoba noodle bowl. I wasn't crazy about the scallops on my Cali roll but everything else about it was delicious. I tried a bite (or 4!) of my husband's noodle bowl and it was awesome! The shrimp in particular were tasty! We enjoyed our meal thoroughly and I can easily see us going back again. I saw kids there and I thought the kids' menu was great. For the two of us with our appetizers and entrees, plus hot tea, our meal came to just about $50. This is a great point to mention that they offer a 10% military discount (and that includes veterans, fireman and police officers!). This is a locally-owned and operated restaurant, not a chain so give them a try next time you are in Ramona, or passing through from Julian. It won't disappoint!

Pretty good sushi place for Ramona, the atmosphere is fantastic, they are always so busy make sure you make a reservation on a Friday or Saturday. They have a wide variety of food choices, sushi doesn't sound good? Have a pulled pork bbq sandwich, don't see what you like on the menu??? Talk to the sushi chef, he's the owner and has always been so accommodating. The waitresses know locals and have done special things for our kids which makes us come back more and more :) not to mention the toy bucket for the littles.

So I read great reviews of this place and decided being local to give a local sushi place a shot but was let down horribly. First off the rolls which we paid for were full city price at around thirteen dollars a roll which I would pay for good sushi, second they were as around as a quarter... I mean come on I want a roll something that is shocking, something worth that much. On a side note most everything they do had something fried in it out the whole dish was deep fried in oil they used for everything else do in short terms one of my rolls tasted like french fries mixed with bacon. Here is the kicker, we ordered the Ramona roll which sounded kind of enticing but within two hours both me and my fiance were parked on the side of the 78 on the way home puking our guts up and trying not too the rest of the way home but we ended up being sick the rest of the day from nausea and diarrhea and missed work the next day, so I wanted to thank you guys for a memorable meal!

My husband and I ate at De Tuna Shack tonight and I was so impressed. The sushi was really very good. We had the Brenda roll and the Shack Crunchy roll. Both were very fresh and yummy. We also had the unagi which was awesome. One word of warning, the side of tater tots we ordered for our little boy was a surprise, I was picturing a small side of tots not a gigantic boat. Snacking on them pre sushi made it tough, I wanted to finish the sushi but was very stuffed. The service was amazing, in fact I don't know that I have had better service anywhere. The owners were behind the bar rolling sushi; which is pretty cool. But the most incredible thing was that when our little boy was acting up a bit and the waitress was so great about it, she brought over a basket full of potato heads that he could play with. Talk about making a mom (not to mention the patrons at the next table) very grateful. They were wonderful. I highly recommend this place, we will be back.

I don't know...I really want to like and patronize this place being that it is a local business and all, but between the inconsistent hours, so-so food and overall blah vibe they're just okay. Unless I'm dying from sushi withdrawals and I won't survive a drive down the hill then I will probably just hit one of my other spots. Sorry guys :(

: Everything from the name to the staff to the food, all is absolute perfection! I live 7-hours away and would happily drive here for dinner DAILY!!! The shrimp po boy and tots with the sauce are simply magical!! You guys rock, keep up the good work and I cannot wait to come back to Ramona and eat here again!

Hands down my favorite restaurant in Ramona. Even the times I'm not feeling like sushi, the server's are always able to suggest something to satisfy my craving. After only a few trips in, I found myself being greeted with "Dr. Pepper for you, or will it be Lemonade this time?" These guys really know how to make someone feel like a VIP! The sushi is a delicious spin on traditional Japanese cuisine and there are numerous "hot" options from the kitchen for those who are not really in to raw fish. They even have a selection of cooked(fried) rolls with or without fish. Their Kitchen food is excellent as well. They prepare all their menu items fresh and from scratch, including the sauces. Sushi Must Haves: Brenda Roll, Enter the Dragon Roll, Da Shack Roll (not to be confused with Shack Crunch Roll, which is also delicious.) Kitchen Must Haves: Katsu Chicken, Buffalo Burger, Yakisoba Noodle (Seafood is my favorite but they have other options) Even if there's no room left, everyone must try their Cherry/Pineapple Cobbler!!!!! You won't be disappointed. While no restaurant is perfect and they all make mistakes, the management here will go the extra mile to ensure your visit meets your expectations and you leave full and happy, no matter what it takes.

Loved the sushi and the value! I will going back for sure. They are extremely friendly and helpful. We got their sashimi plate multiple times when we were there. It was so good! I am craving it now! My parents ordered other rolls as well and liked them. Glad to have a place in Ramona I can go to and get sushi!

Hubby and I went here on a whim trying to find an open restaurant other than Mexican food around 8:45-9:00pm. We walked in as they were closing up shop, hubby realized and asked if they were closing and they said yes. We walked out and a kind gentleman came out and said "come back on in". They all said they couldn't turn us away. We were very grateful... That's hospitality right there! We preserved miso & some rolls and all were great. We were very pleased with the service, it left an impression. Plus having a variety in a small town is wonderful, the nice staff is a cherry on top!

I will start this review by saying that I had always *hated* sushi. I thought it was gross, no matter what I might have tried. Over the years I had so many people tell me that it was just that I "never tried ____", but it never seemed to get better for me. That all changed when I first ate here. Everything always seems so fresh, and the chef is amazing. I've had everything from the calamari to yes, -GASP-, truly raw fish. The miso soup is always fantastic, and their rolls are a guilty pleasure. I have loved every single thing. Pretty impressive for a woman who can't stand fish. The service there is always fast and friendly. Brenda is always smiling whenever I see her, and I have not once been dissatisfied in my dining experience here. I would give 100 stars if I could, but unfortunately, my limit here is five.

The first time we tried this place the sushi just had no finesse.. don't really know how else to put it.. the rolls were not tight at all and fell apart. waited a few months and tried it again.... I asked if I could get some tempura crunchies on the top of my roll. It arrived to my table with basically half of the box poured on my plate, I laughed thinking this was a joke. It wasn't..... Waited a few more months, we ordered 3 different rolls. sampled a piece from each still floppy loose roll... finished our conversation, paid our bill and left. Strike 3 :(

I was in town visiting my aunt and came here for dinner. The place is really cool and decorated well. The service was very friendly and prompt. The rolls we ordered were very fresh actually, no fishy smell or taste and everything had really good flavor. At our table we got the Gina Roll, shrimp tempura roll, crunch rolls, yakisoba (seafood), spicy tuna hand rolls and a chicken teriyaki bento box. The waitress did forget to write down the rainbow roll we ordered but it worked out because we were sooo full! hehe The prices were that of a fancy sushi place so maybe they were a few bucks too high but with the freshness I guess it is ok.

such a wonderful find!! we were riding our bikes from San Diego out to Ramona and wanted to get some real food (not energy bars) before heading back home. i ex-nayed the KFC and some shack advertising fish and chalupas. so Da Tuna Shack drew us in with their promise of sushi! we downed loads of water and soda and they were super friendly about it! the bento box was awesome and they made us some custom rolls. its a down home sorta place and anyone's welcome! sushi in the middle of nowhere! so good

***EDIT*** I stopped by here a few weeks ago on a whim to pick up a roll for the hubs. I walked in and told them I wanted to spiciest roll they make! I can't remember what it was called but my husband REALLY liked it! ---------------------------------------------------------- I stopped by here after a hair appointment. I was really excited to see what they had done with the place and to try the sushi! Da Tuna Shack is in the same place that the newer Packard's was in. I liked what they had done with the decor. The people were very friendly and the service was good. I don't fancy myself a "sushi connoisseur" but I have had enough of it in my life to know what's good and what isn't. The sushi here was 'good'. Not great, but not bad either. It seemed a bit bland at times and the fried roll I had was very very greasy. I would go back again, this time I would get something a little simpler and NOT fried!

Excellent as usual. Great sushi. Occasionally they cook the hot food to soon and it comes out cold. come on you guys, you should know better than that if there is sushi being made. Oh and soft shell crabs should be quickly fried or they get mushy.

Just yummy grub! Not a sushi fan, so this review is mostly about everthing else. I like some of the menu and love the rest. Had a really good steak the other day and my girlfrined said the sushi was really good. I dig the healthy alternative foods they have (not easy to find in Ramona). And in the past are always willing to customze a sushi order. Oh, they serve Stone beer, this is awsome! I find a meal to be a little pricey for me, but I'm pretty poor and always hungry! So I don't go as often as I'd like. The one thing that sucks for me is the restroom isn't inside the resturant, but it is very close and clean. Please go if you have a pallet for yummy.

Just recently moved to Ramona after living in Japan for 7 years. No, its not Tokyo quality sushi but for a small town its pretty darn good. Don't listen to the amateurs here who act like they are sushi experts. Its worth your money & time. Take-out generally is ready in 20-25 minutes & they are very friendly! 2 thumbs up!!!

I was skeptical when my mom recommended we eat at a sushi joint in Ramona, but I was thoroughly impressed. The decor and ambiance was great, the food was great and the service was great (The server even gave my 3-year old a Mr Potato Head to keep her busy). We had sushi rolls, which were delicious and big, the miso soup was excellent and my 3-year old scarfed down the mahi mahi sandwich. Sandwiches also come with either tater tots or sweet potato fries. I still have no idea what Da Tuna Shack is doing in Ramona, but I wish them well (and hope they open up shop in one of the beach communities in SD) as you can tell the owners take pride in everything about this restaurant.

So the boyfriend and I really enjoy sushi and just moved back to Ramona. We gave this place a try and it is very delcious. I would definitely recommend this place over "the other sushi place" in Ramona. The sushi here tastes more fresh and flavorful. Also, the staff is WAYYY more friendly. :) Favorite Roll: Enter the Dragon!

I eat a lot of sushi. And I mean actual sushi - not veggie rolls or cooked stuff. I went in here one day when getting my car serviced nearby. I had salmon nigiri and it was off. Not like off the chain, but OFF like with the classic dead-fish odor. Additionally, the sushi chef didn't speak to me nor did he offer anything else in the way of friendliness.. he let the waitress do all the talking and acted like my order was a bother. The waitress however, was quite friendly & we even had a few laughs. She thereby prevented a one-chili rating. I would not have done a review for this place except I saw so many high ratings. For me, its a big-O NO THANK YOU! Best nearby bet IMHO is Poway Sushi Lounge.

Great sushi, great staff. I can't express how welcome we felt, and how friendly everyone was. We travelled from PQ to hang with friends who live out in the SD country estates, and it was well worth it. The Bruce Lee rolls are the best. The beer selection is phenomenal for a sushi joint. Stone was in full effect. I was even given a 15th anniversay from a stash in the back. Totally unexpected and very appreciated.

Da tuna shack is propably the best restaurant in Ramona. The food is awesome, the binto boxes are really good and the bruce lee roll might be the best I've ever had. The owner, Ken, is perpetually chipping in as the sushi chef and is real friendly. It's the most expensive restaurant in Ramona probably due to the shipping costs that are necessary to keep the fresh fish stocked. You definatley get what you pay for though. Very nice.

First off, I think Brenda ROCKS for replying to every review here! That's her...so caring about her restaurant and truly cares about the people who come into it and whether or not their experience was all that she would hope it to be. The crew at Da Tuna Shack is AWESOME!!! Second, the food....OMG...the food.....I have always been afraid to try sushi and not any more. I even went in with my girlfriend and we said "Surprise us!" to the chef and he did....with a GORGEOUS, scrumptious salmon lemon thing with red roe and just the most amazing flavor ever! I've gone there with my kids (ages 7, 10 and 12) and the LOVED it.....we got several rolls and shared and my kids even used the chopsticks and enjoyed the place as a true experience. My husband loves that he can get non-sushi stuff there, like tater tots - yep, and it made him very happy! LOL Lastly, in addition to the amazing food and rockin' crew, Brenda and the rest truly support Ramona as a community. They have consistently donated to local causes and fundraisers without batting an eyelash. They are proud of this community and humbly support it with all their hearts!!! They exemplify the Ramona lifestyle and the people who live here. Thank you guys for being here and for all you do to help Ramona be "Ramona!" Love you guys! Kat

We love this place! Their service is awesome, their rolls are great, and their prices are reasonable! Our favorites are the shack crunch, enter the dragon, and dino. Our only complaint, and it's a really small one, is that we wish they had more seating. If you are going at a busy time on the weekend you may want to make a reservation. Definitely our favorite place for sushi in Ramona, and better than many places in SD and Poway!

Im sorry but after reading the reviews, some of these people are way off about the food at "Da Tuna Shack" I myself was excited to have a new place open up and reading a story in the local paper I felt like I needed to try it. Well I can safely say I will never go back or recommend this place to anyone. The tempura did not taste or look like tempura. It look like they throw vegetable french frie gress and fried it that way. I tryed one of their boxes and the food was completely under cook. I will say they did a nice job in decor and customer service is great. But I would think the main focus would be the food. They need to really work on that.

Da Tuna Shack is one of our favorite places in town; we try to get there at least once a week. What's not to like about a place with terrific food and a staff that remembers exactly what your youngster likes to eat (and getting the order in before you even have a seat)? Our favorites: the Casey Tibbs roll, the Bento Boxes, the Katsu sandwich and the chicken salad. And they serve Paulaner! Bonus!

Finally we don't have to go down the hill for sushi. You don't know how much money I've spent in the last two years down in Poway after my horrid experience at "the other" sushi restaurant up here in Ramona. Da Tuna Shack has personality and it's all Ramona. No it isn't refined but the fish was amazing-- the rolls (especially LOVED the Bruce Lee) were absolutely delicious and we had some salmon sashimi that tasted like butter. Service was great, especially for such a young restaurant. That means so much. Thank you for opening here. I'll be back really soon.

Been twice a week this last month. I have eaten sushi all over San Diego and Ramona has a gem. I know good sushi. They have been consistent and I will be on my 7th visit, good sign.

For those who want the short version..to the point this place is nice, good, friendly and i would go back.... i wrote a book about it! lol..its below ;) So far so good. First day I pulled up to this place, I was excited to find a sushi spot in Ramona....wasnt excited about my 3yr old crying in the car so I reversed and went home. Ok so day two...I go in with my kid and wasn't sure if I seat myself or wait. Had an awkward moment to think so I just sat at the closest table. I was acknowledged with smiles and service promptly after (but as an impatient American the 20seconds to figure out what to do was weird)..yea I'm a Queen sometimes..lets move on Very nice waitress that attended to me. I asked for a to-go menu and she advised me it will take about 30mins to have the food ready. I appreciated that information because I knew the little prince would rather be at the park down the street. I left and called in my order. Asian chicken salad($7.95) and shack crunch roll($10). Went back to get my food and I was greeted and remembered immediately, I like that :)..no guessing what to do,where to sit or whom to speak with. The waitress offered me something to drink as i waited for my to-go order. I declined since my food was pretty much done. Very friendly and thoughtful. I left with adding a little tip for their kindness and smiles. So far salad is good but next time I request carry out I will ask for the dressing and wonton strips separate and on the side. There was a lot of dressing and the salad was a good portion. I knew I would eat the rest later but with the dressing already making my wontons soggy i was mad at myself for not requesting them seperate...but i cant blame anybody for my failure to ask. There were more red onions to my liking, but not an over kill. One random mandarin orange was under my shredded cabbage hiding...not sure if that was part of the meal or missplaced...later reading the menu it WAS part of the meal..lol..ONE? the menu states mandarin orangeS (plural)..thats ok..i don't care for them too much on salads anyway..lol..the chef must know me well ;) Alert! Here comes another Queen moment alert! alert! I'm picky about my chicken so its not their fault I envisioned shredded chicken or real chicken rather then "salad" chicken strips. They were the kind that you buy in small packages in the fridge section at the grocery store..thick processed looking boneless skinless chicken that was grilled for taste and appearance. lol. sorry..i really am not trying to speak bad about the food because it was good. ok moving on to the Shack crunch roll.It was shrimp tempura, cream cheese, avo, crab and spicy mayo with eel sauce. It was good. absolutely no complaints! yes, I know i wrote a book about the salad. But the roll was good. Nice, crunchy, warm and tasty. I didn't call my best friend and tell her it was the best ever...but I will be going back. I am just really glad that there is a place like this in Ramona. I will be back. I was under a sushi spell and this place cured it :)

I am a sushi lover and this place is great! I've gone a few times since moving back to Ramona & this is the only place in Ramona I'll eat sushi at. The tempura was delish and the rolls are ginormous. The prices are very reasonable and the quality is fantastic. Worth trying for yourselves.

The sushi is amazing. We sat at the bar and the sushi chef (owner of the restaurant ) was friendly and surprised us with great rolls! We are super picky about our sushi, and we were well satisfied! The tempura veggies could literally be an appetizer for a family. Great large portion sizes!

Just another disappointing Ramona restaurant experience. We gave this place 3 chances after being completely grossed out by the only other sushi place in Ramona, Xenri. The rolls are comparable with 7-11, or grocery store sushi. Don't waste your time or $.

I love this place! The food is great and the staff are very friendly. A great, fun atmosphere as well. Our favorites are the crunch roll, calamari, seaweed salad and fish & chips!

Went in for lunch.... customer service is great, everyone was really nice. The food one the other hand was just blagh... not bad but not good either, I just think it seemed to lack any sort of flavor at all. It's really too bad, I was hoping to get a good restaurant in town. Guess we will continue to drive to Poway Sushi for our Sushi.

We had tickets to see Sophie B Hawkins at the Ramona Mainstage (incredible venue if you have never been there...worth the drive) and were driving up @ dinner time, so we had to find someplace to eat in Ramona. Never having stopped in Ramona, but always just passing through, we started researching restaurants and came across, Da Tuna Shack. At first we thought, "Sushi in Ramona?", but after reading the reviews and having a love for Sushi, we decided to give it a chance. Lucky we did....if you drive too fast, you might miss it, but since Main Street is not the big, just turn around and look again. We give it 5 stars across the board... Walking thru the front door, you are transported to a restaurant in the Islands...from the decorations, the staff, the other patrons and most important, we love the "non-traditional" Sushi chefs, who assemble the most magnificent and most tasty hand rolls and Sushi. When I say "non-traditional"...you might think you were at a restaurant at a Harley Convention, but don't let Tats and Hair fool you...incredible food and most friendly staff. We sat up at the bar...limited seating right in front of the chefs, so we sat in front of the grill prep area. The woman who handles those responsibilities is like a conductor of an orchestra, she was the Ultimate Muli-Tasker who was constantly working between the grill, stove and fryer...always smiling and tossing in a few lines of songs that were playing. Our waitress, (I apologize for not remembering your name...I know you said you moved from Encinitas) was great and made us feel most welcomed, almost as it we had always been eating there...never felt like a newbie. Everyone working there always seemed to be smiling and enjoying the moment. We now have a new Sushi restaurant and I'm even thinking of doing take-out from Oceanside (where we live)..even though my wife thinks I'm crazed. Keep up the great work guys...we hope to be back soon...and now we always have a reason to stop in Ramona!!!!! Thanks again!!!

Just picked up lunch for my office. Got the mahi mahi sandwich, the katsu chicken, monkey balls, and tempura veggies. AMAZING!!!!!!! We just moved our office upstairs in the Ramona Plaza and it's good to know we have such a great lunch spot downstairs!

First time trying this place, i eat crab/California rolls once or twice a month for the last 40 years, so iv'e tried a few different places. Bottom line, if I could afford to eat here everyday i would. This by no way is a reflection on their prices, but on the quality of everything about this place, i'd have no problem sitting there for a hour and waiting for my food, and having a few drinks. Good food and fast service, i don't generally use in the same sentence. Once again i'm not saying their slow, just busy at times. This is Ramona folks, be thank-full to have such a nice place to eat with nice people to serve you. See you real soon tuna shack, thanks!

This is the first time I have tried Da Tuna Shack. I was hesitant to try it because I have heard some not so good reviews about this place. My friend and I ordered take-out today and he had the Katsu Chicken Bento Box and I had the CHicken Teriyaki Bento Box. He said that the chicken was cooked right. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. My teriyaki chicken was cooked right. Besides the chicken, we did find that their Asian salad was not what we thought it would be. Instead it's a pasta salad that had no taste. The California Rolls were not bad, it just lacked flavor. I've had better. Gyozas also came with our order and we liked them a lot. It's a nice place especially to have in Ramona. I would give them another try. Overall I had a good experience. The girl who answered the phone and took my order was very polite and ready to answer any questions that I had.

My 10 year old son is a sushi maniac. He LOVES sushi so much he said he will get married in a sushi restaurant one day! So you know that when you take him to eat sushi it better be good! Anyway, we moved to Ramona in November and have been going down the hill to our favorite sushi place in Poway. After our son's football game on Saturday we wanted to try Da Tuna Shack, we had heard great things about it...the ambiance immediately caught our interest - it is up-to-date, clean and and the decor is Hawaii meets small town down to earth Ramona. Okay the food - the PuPu Platter was scrumptous - the presentation was something you would find at a downtown upscale sushi joint. Very tasty! We ordered several rolls which were amazing - we had one little issue with some shrimp not being cooked all the way but the chef (also the owner) immediately made us another roll - which was so yumm! This place is not only good - but children friendly too!! We have a 2 year old who for obvious reasons doesn't sit still or eat quietly - the hostess and owner were totally accomodating and friendly. We will definitely be back, in fact, I think we have found our new favorite sushi place :) Thank you Da Tuna Shack :)

We've been here twice and I enjoyed both visits. The staff is attentive, friendly and efficient. The few dishes I've had are very good, with the sushi being rather exceptional. This is definitely a new favorite for in-town dining.

Tonight we ate at Tuna Shack for the first time and it was really busy! We were seated (luckily) right away and the server was very attentive. Great menu; many great things to choose from. Hubby is not a sushi fan and he decided on a pork chop; while I opted for sushi. The beers were local and frosted glass provided; and the wine I had was local as well; we support our local industry. I ordered ebi and a tempura shrimp roll; and the order probably got held up to coincide with my husbands pork chop. His came, and it was delicious; a nice thick chop with red onion, bell pepper and pineapple fresh relish topping; and fresh zucchini and asparagus on the side, steamed and crisp. It was colorful and great presentation, delicious and hot when served. Mine seemed to have been forgotton; ( a huge rush of people had come) and it took a bit to get it; but they compensated by adding a seared tuna that was absolutely to die for. The ebi was tender, crisp and fresh and the sticky rice was delicious. The Tempura roll was very good; and big. But that seared tuna was melt-in-your-mouth great quality, perfectly done and topped with a sweet chili sauce.....I will be returning again and again for that scrumptious dish! Jim had the banana cream pie for dessert and it looked amazing; he said it was marvelous and cleaned the plate. (I was still in ahi heaven) For a Wednesday night in Ramona it was heartening to see people waiting to be seated; and to be in such a busy and lively place. Obviously it is popular; and our dinners were wonderful. The decor is attractive, surf-style with a lot of polynesian accents. Cute note were the hibiscus flowers (silk) on the real shrubs out front. We completely enjoyed our visit; it is so good to have something upscale like this in Ramona!

I eat there often for lunch, nice people, cool people, fair prices. I read the comment about the tempura- the first time I went in there it was how "miguel b" said it was but... I have been there many times since and it has improved, the only other thing I'm not partial of is the sweetness on the bread the use on there sandwiches and I don't care for the floury substance on the outer crust as well, but still does not effect the overall flavor of the sandwich. I eat there probably once a week and will continue to. I also eat at the other sushi place in town often as well they are good to.
