When trying to gather people from SF, day snowboarders at Northstar and people in Concord...apparently Oakland/Berkeley is an acceptable middle point. We searched for a place on Yelp! and this was the top one to come up on Thai food searches (even though it's more Laotian per peeps on here). FYI, almost no cellphone reception here so I wasn't able to check-in successfully - I found it on Yelp! but then it kept searching for a signal. With 10 people, the servers were accommodating and stuck 3 tables together for us. (4 stars) We ordered a mass of various dishes (3 stars - nothing really stood out for me & boy toy and the other 8 said they liked the food but no one could pick a single dish when put on the spot). The price after tax & tip came out to $11.50/person. Not bad. This is a 3.5 star because I thought the food was literally "A-OK" with decent service. And the location may faze you if you're a 1st timer like us. My friend called to say it's in a residential area & his girl in the background was asking if we could go somewhere else 'cos she thought it was "ghetto". As we drove up, I joked maybe it was out of the backyard of someone's house like in Taiwan. But it's right on the corner of the street, on the edge of a residential area - as if they converted a house into a restaurant. And in SoCal, ghetto doesn't mean the food sucks. It was night time, we drove by a group of kids in hoodies hanging out at a corner 3 blocks away staring us down as we rolled by in a Benz and so maybe some might call it ghetto. I personally thought it looked like a normal neighborhood (I used to work in South Central so this looked like a middle class residential area to me). Besides, once we parked, the food smelled good so we decided to stay. So please, don't let the area scare you away. You can find decent food inside. Food we ordered - all tasted fine - but nothing to rave about. Please be wary - medium spicy Papaya Salad made us all pause & order everything else as "MILD". What do you expect? I was with a bunch of Chinese folks & I've been Chinesesized by boy toy. *grin* 1) Angel Wings - crispy sweet 2) Giao - threw me 'cos the egg rolls were chopped up for ease of rolling but it actually made it really messy & hard for me to eat - the stuff kept falling out from the lettuce wrap. Tasty & crunchy w/ fresh crispy veggies. 3) Sausage dish - I came after my friend ordered it so don't know what it's called but they ate it. 4) Papaya Salad - tasty but spicy as heck when ordered as Medium spicy level so be forewarned 5) Coconut Shrimp Soup - creamy and tasty but my friend who normally gets it said it wasn't as flavorful as it could be...more lemon grass? I don't know - I liked it. 6) Pad Thai (one w/ shrimp - one w/ chicken) - tasty chewy noodles. 7) Phad Si-Ew (w/ beef) - comes w/ beef, broccoli & flat noodles. Ok. 8) Beef Larb - ok (just avoid the 2 chili peppers on top) 9) Yellow Curry with chicken - veggies were cooked enough to be soft but not mushy w/ chicken pieces in it. I wish it had a bit more curry powder in it. It just didn't have that curry flavor to it for me. 10) Chicken with Sweet Basil - tasty and had a bit of spice kick to it 11) Stir fried Eggplant w/ Bean Cake - cooked to the right consistency for good veggie softness without being mushy. Flavor was just ok. 12) Sticky Rice & Steamed Rice - both ok. I believe I've covered it all - 3 appetizers, 9 dishes (salad & soup included in here), 2 rice pots. We all filled our tummies for cheap. Everything tasted okay. I don't believe I'll drive out of my way for this place but if next time, someone wants to meet in Berkeley & asks me to meet them here, I wouldn't be adverse to it. Parking is all street parking and we easily found one on one of the 4 street corners - which is odd in a residential area but great for the 4 cars of people in our group! I think we each parked on one corner last night.
