My husband and I eat here regularly and love it! We always get wonderful service, even when they are busy. The food is always fresh, hot and tasty. My husband usually orders a burger and fries and loves every bite. I rotate between the salmon burger, the garden sandwich with eggplant and the saffron chicken sandwich. I usually swap out the fries for a fresh mini salad with house balsamic vinaigrette. All three of these are delicious! We also typically order a cookies and cream shake which is always awesome. Last time we asked for it malted and loved it. My only suggestion is if you are looking for a quiet dinner place, or somewhere to chat with friends over a glass of wine, do not come here on a night when they have live music. It's rather loud which makes it almost impossible to chat.

Service was slow, it took a long time to get drinks but food was excellent. A lot of great unique menu items to choose from. I had the Apple Chicken Pesto, and it was delicious! I will be back to try this place again. I'm only giving 3 stars because of the service. Outside of that, ambiance and food were perfect.

In town for a dear, lifelong friend's funeral, a good sized group of us (8) dropped in for lunch after the Mass. I was really very pleasantly surprised to find such good food in a cool (literally and figuatively speaking), super clean space. I had the Salmon salad and many in our group ordered the burgers - everything was really tasty - especially those onion rings! Service was spot on and the owner came by twice to check on our expereince. Turns out he was a fellow class of '79 grad from GDHS as well! If you're in the area and looking for prompt service, good food and reasonable prices, I encourage you to try Barkin' Dog Grill. About the only suggestion I could make is a couple of more options on the salad menu, but overall, very good!

You gotta love local burgers made with style. Get the burgers, as it is their specialty, even though the chili was decent. The jazz music was an added bonus! Try a local place like this rather than the chain burger places and you will have a memorable experience.

Hubs and I happened upon this place for dinner while in town for a event at the Gallo Center. We enjoyed eating here. Food: I had the Chicago Dog. It was tasty. The hot dog was a Casper brand; it was grilled. The relish was not the neon kind (thank goodness). The dog was served with a side of fries. Price $6.95. Service: we were greeted and seated immediately. The server was friendly and efficient. She refilled our glasses and cleared our dishes without us asking, which was impressive because the place was packed and she was the only server. The food came out quickly and was presented nicely. Decor: Esthetically pleasing. Touches of modern industrial and shabby chic.

They have a new burger . Bacon grilled onions and horse radish ! And that was just two thumbs up. I ask to have it on the Menu . If you love horse radish .... Get it !!!!

I loved their sandwiches, grilled garden sandwich and buffalo bleu chicken sandwich. The customer service is great too.

Had the grilled garden sandwich and was blown away that a sandwich with no meat could be so good. My husband had the chili burger. The spice was great and the meat lean and all fresh. We had our son with us he had a naked dog with is a Caspers hotdog and it was grilled to perfection. Also had the sweet potato fries that honestly are some of the best I ever had. Perfectly salted and fresh sweet potato taste that was not terrible starchy like I have run into several times ordering sweet potato fries. Right next to the fat cat and right across the street from the parking garage making easy in and out. Have not been there but apparently they have live music during the week. Will be coming back again for sure can't wait to try their wine selection

We have been here 4 times and each of the first three were "ok". 4th is the charm I guess. Food was mediocre. Shake was thin, burgers were weak....at $10 each. Service was slow and inattentive. (Even though we were 1 of 3 tables at the height of dinner rush). What sealed it though was the a $5 upcharge to sub mashed for fries for my daughter. Keep in mind, that is not "in addition", but a different version of the same veg. So...a 50% up charge on the entire meal. The server had to call the boss on the phone to figure out how to charge for them. I asked her if that sounded right, and then accepted her blank stare and went on my way. . There are 6 better choices within a block for the same or less money. Most actually want your business and take some pride in what they put on the plate.

Love this local business. Everything I've had is delicious. Owners work the floor along with staff & their customer service is good. Love supporting the locals, especially when the food is this good!

The food is delicious; the service is great; and the entertainment is wonderful. This is the perfect, little place for a relaxing dinner and a show that will provide you with a great evening in downtown Modesto without breaking the bank.

Affordable, lot of different options in the menu. They try to use local and organic ingredients. We've had a number of their burgers and salads, my kids also love eating here, and we've never had anything we didn't love, and we've probably been through 80% of the menu. Service is always pleasant and patient, which we appreciate because our kids can be indecisive. They also often have live music which can really add to the atmosphere. This is one of our "go to" places in Modesto.

The food was very good here. The only complaint I had was that there was too much cheese on the burger I ordered. Usually a customer wants more cheese. They supplied a good amount. If it was American or cheddar cheese, it would have been fine, but the burger I ordered was blue cheese, and that flavor is a strong one. It did not need as much as it came with. It overpowered the rest of the flavors. I will be back to try other menu items.

Just happen to stop by this place while working in the area. Amazing food and great service. Food came out really fast and everything was fresh. Will definitely come here again when I'm in town. Impressed.

Everybody says that the burgers are great but they are just kissing ass. Their little kids running around the whole freaking time.

  • Nessa M.

The food isn't good here, for how expensive it is I expected better. The chili that is on the chili dog and fries taste like they are from a can, they put the wrong cheese on my burger from what it says on the menu.

  • Jackie D.

I appreciate what they are trying to do but it's just not that good. Can't make myself or my wife go back a second time. Expensive for what it is and prices for substituting sweet potato fries are silly. Paid $50 for three burgers and fries, upsurd. What is crazy making is the false advertising... Nothing in the place but the beef is of quality. From the website... Barkin' Dog Grill for the best in fresh organic food and live entertainment! The bacon has nitrates, the chicken is commercial non-organic grade and the veggies follow suit. How hard is it to follow through on your values for an entire menu when it is the opening line on your website's homepage? They need a class in menu and taste. Better to go to Sprout's and get some grass fed ground beef and go home.

Great food for reasonable prices. I hear good things about the burgers. I got a salad and enjoyed the music this Saturday night. Come check out the bands and grab dinner with a date, friends or with the family.

Another great recommendation from my friend who I like to think of as the King of Downtown MoTown. Picture this, Downtown Modesto, January 2nd, 2013 I was hankering for a good birthday meal when some friends messaged me asking where I wanna go for my birthday dinner. Immediately I texted "The King" and he responded without hesitation the Barking Dog. My friends were on board because they rarely venture into Downtown much less go to independent restaurants such as these. We arrive to a nearly deserted restaurant but I didn't think much of it being a Wednesday night. I already knew what I wanted through some "King" nudging and my own exquisite taste. To start we swooped on some rings to share in the form of plain and the Blue Ranch Rings. The Blue Ranch Rings were the best of the two obviously with it's generous squirting of ranch dressing and bleu cheese crumbles. The main was the Gorgonzola Bleu Cheese Burger (yes I was feeling quite blue on my birthday) which came with a surprising helping of fries. I added some bacon to that party on a bun and was happier than a Senator with an escort! Hands down it had to be the best burger I've had in a long time and the secret to that is their source. You see, although it can be pricey, it sometimes is best when your burger comes from one location rather than several countries. Barking Dog Grill only buys from one farm so to me that is great in this day and age where cheap beef seems to be the standard. I just have to say that service could've been a bit better in the way of consistency and our waiter not forgetting a few things that were requested. All in all though this is definitely a winner and new inductee in my Downtown Modesto culinary circuit.

Seriously great burgers! Ordered cheese burgers and salads to take to the park. Fast service, friendly and tasty! Fries got soggy as it traveled but they still tasted good. Loved that the meat was organic and grilled!

Best place to eat great atmosphere great service and great food and they have live music and it's amazing the owner he's so nice he greets everybody! Makes to feel like youre home. the food is delicious best place I've ever gone to eat burgers if I could Id give it 1000 stars!! Don't listen to the negative comments because this place is amazing I've gone like 10 times and I've never got tired of it and it's amazing every time I go! I take friends over and they fall in love with the food!!

I gave a fiction reading at the local college and a group of us came here beforehand. The lamb burger was nicely spiced, as were the excellent sweet potato fries. Good beers, decent house wine, known for burgers. Don't order the veggie burger though: there's no burger part, only the extras.

"THE CHEESEBURGER HOWL THAT SAVED THE WORLD" Starring: Barking Dog Grill's "Special" Papa Cheeseburger Co-Starring: Dr. Pauli WeirdWolverini Demons of the Fast Food&Drug Co. The Multiverse You ~~~ Part I: WeirdWolverini of Modesto: Scene 1: In the bottomless pit, the Old, Wise, & Grey WW is chained with 50k ton links of Neutronium chained to the Earth's core. As the Demons of the Evil Fast Food&Drug Co. tantalize him with the sight & smell of a Barking Dog's Special "Papa" Cheeseburger, they hound him. Demons: "Oh Great WW, we may give you a little lick of this object of your uttermost desire if you tell us why you Howl so for it!" Scene: WW strains & Howls anew with renewed force, as his immense strength pulls at the Earth's core...but not enough to break his atomic bonds. He talks. WW: "Oh, you most foul evil of this world. Curse you twice, for both depriving me of both the object of my desire, & the means of telling you, why I howl for it. Some say it is for either the Gorgonzola or Blue Cheese, or for the 1 pound of orgasmic meat. Some will claim that it is because of the musical moonlight, OH demon's of FF&D, you may never find out my secret...unless..." Demons: "Oh Great WeirdWolverini (Demons start rubbing their hands together with their naughty bits), we are friends, but you must give us a hint, Oh Great WW. " WW: "NO! he ROARED !" (the Demons leaped back in fear & gnashed their teeth) Demons: "Oh Great GREAT WW, please forgive us for any insult. We act under duress. No sentient being should be tormented with residing in Modesto, land of car snatchers, dog nappers, & ass grabbers. We demons especially detest your stupid Farmer's Market's Organic Morons, but we admire your Inorganic Toxic Waste Dumps, especially the ones that supply our booming Fast Food & Drug Industries. How wonderful indeed!" WW: "HOWL wonderful is your Fast Foodishness. And HOWL gratifying it is to know that you value Modesto's Waste Mismanagement. I have been seeing some three headed cats. I almost HOWLed with laughter, when I thought Modesto's Water only had Uranium in it". Demons: "Oh Great WW, we thank you from the very bottom of the black sludge of our Fast Food Clogged & Drugged Black Little Hearts. Kind Being, now can we get an answer to the riddle? Oh Great WW, Please! Pretty Please! Pretty please with Burnt Sugar on top?" WW: "HOWLING funny. OK, the truth is that I suffer from transparent sporadic Korsakoff episodes with Flagrant Factitious Disorder & Dramatic Dissemblance. My recall will surely return with a GREAT bite of a Barking Dog's Cheeseburger!" Scene 2: In the pit, the heavenly Cheeseburger waited The Great WW closed his eyes. He thanked the cows. It seem that he and the Cheeseburger was the only stable objects there, as the myriad of demons flew willy nilly in a bizarre Brownian Motion. The Demons needed to know why he howled for it! In their evil minds, they figured that if they could find, distill, condense, and inject this "HOWLING URGE ESSENCE" into their Fast Food&Drugs, they would be victorious over all that is good...& make even more fukizillions of dollars, from the already deluded drugged masses! Scene 3: After some nanosecs., the Brownian Dance lost entropy. This also generated lots of FIGS BOZONS, which also made an impact at the Large Hadron Colander at CERN, in Swisscheeseland. The dirt poor scientists were actually detecting "Godless Particles" of the "Damned BOZOON Field". Demons: "Oh Great WW, after much gnashing of teeth, wise thinking, and sporadic playing with ourselves, we have decided that you may bite the Great Cheeseburger. This bite will relieve your disorder, you can then recall why you HOWL,& let us borrow your secret for just a millisecond." WW: "Bring it just a little closer. HOWL" BITEZ KAZAPPONGG! Final Scene: Little did the Demons suspect that the Old Great WW could react less than a picosecond. All he needed was the one Bite of the Delicious Barking Dog's Special Papa Cheeseburger to react & direct his Super-Cheeseburger Powered HOWL to: 1) Shattered the Neutronium Chains & send some more particles to the Swiss (& make more holes in the Cheese). 2) Imploded the Demons to form wormhole traps to a Universe that had no food, drugs, nor beings to sell crap to. 3) Reset & oscillate the Earth's Core to have the Vann Allen Belts destroy Ozone depleting chemicals, render moneygrubbing Banking CEOs "harmless & neutered", thus reverse global warming & financial meltdown. 4) To alter the laws of probability to favor peace, happiness, and the "Cheeseburger Way" TM. 5) To obfuscate! You will only remember when you wake up... BARKING DOG GRILL IS HOWLING GOOD!!!!!

I stopped in last night for the first time and did take-out, since I was by myself. Since I was just ordering take-out, I was really surprised at the accommodating service they offered me- I was told to take a seat at the bar while I perused the menu and waited for my food, and they brought me a glass of water. I thought that was very nice. I ordered the Mama Burger, Sweet Potato Fries, and a milkshake, all of which I thought were delicious. I've read other reviews where people said the burgers were nothing special, and while I suppose other restaurants would make a burger equally as good, it was still delicious. I do wish the bun had been toasted- I think that could have given it an extra kick. BUT, I still enjoyed every bite! The sweet potato fries were really good, and so was the milkshake. No complaints there at all. I thought the decor of the restaurant was hip and cool, and the service was excellent. (Again, they had me take a seat at the bar, brought me water while I waited, took my order quickly, and my food was ready to go as quickly as it could be made. The time that I waited was just enough time to do some catching up on my Facebook newsfeed.) :) Parking was easy, as there is a parking garage right across the street and no meters in front of the establishment- I was able to park in a free 30 minute green zone. I am giving it 4 stars out of 5, because as some reviewers have already mentioned, it was expensive. My tab came out to $19 for those three items, which seemed pretty excessive to me. However, I'll be back! I think it will be a fun place to take people who visit from out of town.

Their chili sucks, and it was pretty expensive for a burger joint. I would rather not spend my money there.

Last night my friend and I decided to go to The Barking Dog to see how it was and to listen to some jazz. I made reservations for two and was told the band would start around 7. We arrived and noticed hardly anyone there and no band. The food was terrible and we asked about the music and said the band had canceled. Wow what a big let down !! This was a Friday night !!! Modesto night life sucks to say the least because we tried several other venues and they sucked too !!! Come on Modesto !!!

Burger was really good but kinda pricy and when I subbed the sweet potato fries I knew there was an up charge but $2.50 come on? There was hardly any fries on the plate. I would have been better off ordering it as an appetizer for $5. That being said, I will still go back.

Fanciest burger and hot dog joint I have ever been in. Also a little bit on the expensive side. You need to order your fries and such separately. They use sweet pickles in their burgers! How unexpected! I was not a fan though. No sweet pickles for me. Overall the burger was good. My boyfriend had the chili dog, and I think he was okay with it, but not in love. To be honest, I'm not a fan of this place. It's expensive and I know a few other places that are at the same level (or better) with a lower price point. Definitely not a place I would go regularly, but I guess if you wanted to eat burgers and seem a little fancy for a date, this place would fit the bill.

Finally had the time to come try this burger place out. It's been on my to-do list for a while. For around $9+ for a burger, I expect something amazing, juicy, and flavorful. Or at least something better tasting than a burger from a fast food place. Sadly, what I got from Barking Dog Grill was mediocre. No special pizzazz or unique taste. However! Opposite can be said for their milkshakes. I ordered the cookies and cream one and was able to request how much cookies I wanted in it. Delicious, thick, and creamy! Only reason I would go back is for that.

Had a few extra minutes to kill before the show started and I was hungry for a good ole' fashioned milkshake! So I Yelped 'milkshakes' and up popped the Barking Dog. I really wanted a chocolate shake...ALL chocolate..made with chocolate ice cream and chocolate syrup. They were out of chocolate!?!? My friendly server recommended the chocolate peanut butter cup shake. Well, as it turned out I was GLAD they were out of chocolate cuz the chocolate peanut butter cup was out of this world. I almost went back after the show to have 'seconds' but my guardian health angel said no! :( My health angel fell asleep on the way home though, so I stopped at In-and-Out for some tasty fries. Folks, they use REAL ice cream...and they also give you that metal cup thingy with the leftovers in it for a 'second helping'! I will try their burgers next time.. they sound great. Made with 100% organic beef that does not contain any hormones or antibiotics. And the patties are hand-formed daily. Other reviewers said that the sweet potato fries are to die for. I will try them next time too!

The live music enticed us to have dinner Aug. 10 (Sat). Martin Martinez, blues and beige were very entertaining, plus couple other guest singers were awesome, too! However, we almost walked out of this restaurant because our food took over an hour before it got served :( Maybe they were short staff? Surprisingly, we actually loved the gorgonzola bleu burger, but totally unacceptable for food service to take that long... Hire more people!

It's great to see a business that embraces and supports local artists, musicians and poets. I go when there is live music and it's a fantastic atmosphere to enjoy your meal and visit with friends. It's more than just a burger joint, it's a place to experience culture in our community.

As I walk in I smell mop water. I smell the Oder of old water dried on the floor. The waiter is inviting and personable. The restrooms are lacking, they are a far cry from the dinning room. Hey owners remodel it. Menu is easy to follow and has variety. The blue rings a great, wife and is devouring them. One if my kids who dosnt eat blue chez loves it. The onion ring is perfect. My mushroom burger has minimal chez and flavor. It is juicy but it's swallowed by the bun that over takes the small meat party. Rock'en B's is better. I asked for thousand island sauce and the waiter made it. I like the vibe they are going for I liked the waiter we loved the onion rings. The burger is 3 stars the onion rings are 5 stars and the service was 4-5 stars.

Looking for a place to eat quick and easy and found the Barking Dog Grill. To my surprise as I walked in the live music sweep me off my feet. Then going through the menu I landed on one of their signature burger to die for. I will come back again.

AMAZING! AMAZING! AMAZING! This is the place to go for a high quality burger in the area by any comparison! The burgers are simply put THE BEST! The meat they get is from a private ranch& organic fed cows. I believe they grind their meat daily and for what they charge is worth every penny. Expect to spend anywhere between $11-$14 not including whatever you decide to drink. they also have live Jazz & Salsa music during the week in which it's very fun but it can get pretty loud. I recommend anyone visiting the area to give this place a try. I really wished more Bay Area restaurants had the same standards as this establishment. Don't sleep on this spot!

I know it's early in the year, but my lunch today is already a contender for Best Meal '13. Popped in for a quick bite and ordered the Sauteed 'Shroom burger with onion rings. The burger was so juicy and flavorful, it seemed to melt; the rings came hot and crispy. The interior is very modern and relaxed, and the service was both friendly and efficient. This is now on my go-to list whenever I pass through Modesto.

I am consistently surprised by how many establishments here get good reviews when the food is middling at best. This is definitely another one of those establishments. Mean little burger patties, on sad old burger bread and basic "ho hum' fries. Save yourself the trip and order at Inn-N-Out, you are doing yourself a favor and saving some money as well. I think its WAY overpriced for what its charging.

First we went in when a band was playing, which we thought would be fun. We couldn't have a conversation without being an inch from each other and yelling. Not a great start to what I thought was going to be a nice dinner... I don't know how people can say this food is good. For a place that calls itself a "burger shop", you would think that they would have perfected a burger. It reminded me of going to a little league baseball game, heading over to the snack shack and ordering a bland cheap plain ol burger. They try to sell you with the "organic beef" (hey it got me threw the doors), but unfortunately it fell extremely short of even being OK. Cheap sesame seed bun (basically sesame Wonder bread bun that you would find in a school cafeteria). Frozen french fries that they just throw some seasoned salt on. We also tried the chili dog, as not to be biased. The waiter tells us that the chili is delicious and homemade. The chili had no beans and looked like alpo dog food. Very bland, nothing I would go back a second time for. Bottom line not worth the trip and frankly I would have rather gone to In-n-Out and got a real tasty burger. Now I know, and so do you.

I would definitely go again. My daughter and I stopped in for dinner before an event at the Gallo Center. We were asked if we had reservations, which I didn't expect. Because we didn't, we were seated at the counter, which was fine. I liked being able to see all the food coming through and it gave me some ideas for next time. I soon realized why we should have made reservations. there was a special concert given by music students of Gottschalk Music. This place was packed from back to front with many proud parents and family members. I think it was a neat thing to do. The students did a great job and my daughter liked it. My daughter ordered the chili dog. She was so happy with it she told me her stomach was full but she wanted to keep eating (She's 10) . I ordered the mushroom burger and was very happy with that. The only thing is I'm not sure why they didn't ask how I wanted it cooked, especially considering a few of the comments I read on here. Oh, and one more.. though, this is a personal pet peeve of mine. The sauce, though tasty, was in a small circle in the middle of the bun. Kind of leaves the rest of the burger something less exciting than the "treat" in the middle. Both of our meals came with fries..great seasoning, I might add! Maybe they've changed things since those reviews that said they had to be ordered separately. Prices are reasonable for the food you get. This isn't Fast Food people! They were very busy and perhaps the girl was new, but we were passed by several times when our plates were empty and pushed forward. We were at the counter, so it wasn't hard to see us. My daughter's drink was refilled once and mine, not at all. Again, they were very busy and only two waiting staff. Everyone was very pleasant and I was still happy with the service overall.

Dang! I'm wishing I had ordered a milk shake...my burger and fries were so good. Probably the best I've had in forever. The bread and meat were both fresh and it tasted awesome. I apologize for using awesome but I can't think of anything better right now I think my servers name was something like Evan...she was so sweet and she brought my dog some water! I ordered the Gorgonzola Burger with sauteed onions and Provolone cheese. The ONLY thing I wish it had was maybe more lettuce and tomato. It was a bit too light on the veggies for me. But now I know to ask for more. I loved my food so much I was wishing my plate wasn't empty. It is so seldom that I love food like that. So yea...I'm pretty much hooked and I'm thinking I need to visit them at least once a month.

Been here a few times for lunch. Sometimes it's good, other times it isn't. One time the burger was cooked perfect, the next time it was overcooked, you could tell it was sitting there for long time. One thing that is consistent, however, is the service which is awful. But I guess that's what you get when you have one server for the entire place, running around like a chicken with its head cut off, and the owner/manager helping out here and there.

Great burger spot in Modesto. Stopped in with the wife on the way down 99. Didn't want the typical fast food along the highway. Our burgers were cooked a perfect medium rare, couldn't have asked for any better. Half-n-half basket of regular/sweet potato fries were ok. Service was fast, friendly, and attentive. Can't give it more than 3 stars because it was a bit pricey and they didn't serve CocaCola. Would go back again if craving a good burger.

Barking Dog Grill is a testament to how great an impression a place can leave by product alone. Their hamburgers are top-notch. The wait staff are also helpful (sorry to hear about the unfortunate experience from another yelper). It brings up an important point for any business to recognize how crucial good service can be for an impression. The atmosphere is comfortable. I happened to go on a night when a jazz band was playing. It's not a set of musicians who are like, "Look at me! Look at me!" Instead they will actually invite you to jam with them. Talk about a unique experience.

Service is good but the food is pretty terrible. $25 for a hot dog and meatball sub is highway robbery. I had a better hot dog at costco. The fries and meatball sub were way over salted. I already have high blood pressure cuz im fat. Also if you are going to have an open kitchen its not the best idea to be using a microwave. The have a griddle but nothing was cooked on it. FAIL

I went to the Barking Dog Grill for a business lunch and was happy with my experience. The waiters were very attentive and gave fast service. Even the owner waited on us an when I left my Keyes, the waiter ran after me. The food was up to par with other pub restaurants.

Want to feel like you're in college again, going out for a quick bite with your friends before the big game? That's the feeling I get every time I come here. What a great menu of foods that I probably shouldn't eat but hey I'm a young college student...or at least I was once. As soon as they start having late night hours to feed the scores of bar hoppers Thurs-Sat night then it will truly live up to the feeling it gives me and then it would be a 5 star all the way!

Not very sanitary. I watched the cook handle my food right after he counted a bunch if money, (no wash, nothing), then just throw it down on a dirty counter top. And I'm talking looked dirty from the night before dirty. I understand if it was a busy night. But it was still early. I'm not much of a restaurant snob, but I do like my food handled with some care. It's a shame because it is a cool looking place, but not worth it.

Avoid this place. Servers were friendly, but kinda clueless. I was greeted by a server who was on the phone and just kind of gestured to me to sit anywhere. Ordered a burger, was asked for my temperature, so I expected a thick, "pub-style" burger and ordered medium rare, since they claim to use "open range, organic beef". Got a very thin (but juicy) burger that came to my seat medium, and carried to mid-well. Smothered in the saltiest, winiest onions and a not-terribly interesting mayo, topped with generic blue cheese. Couldn't really taste the quality of the beef. With a plain side salad, meal came to twenty bucks, with tip. Staff was eating in plain sight in the kitchen. The whole place just came off amateur and careless from the get-go. Find a better burger.

All the staff there was very friendly, my burger was cooked perfectly, their dogs look delicious, can't wait to return to try them. The ambiance was wonderful, it is a cross between a trendy bar and a family grill. The chandeliers offset the untreated brick walls.

Consistently great food...kudos to the chef! Love the Chicago dog and Avocado bacon burger. Very fresh juicy meat...actually the only burgers I eat ENTIRELY. SO DELISH.

We have been coming to Barkin' Dog since the beginning. It's a great atmosphere tucked away in the heart of downtown Motown. The burgers are seriously the best in town, organic beef cooked to perfection. The burgers are always super fresh and juicy. I am not just partial to the burgers here though, the hot dogs and milkshakes are fantastic too. My all time favorite thing here is the tomato bisque. Who knew that a burger place could turn out such a delicious soup. I can't go too long without eating at BD. Consistently fantastic food.

The Barking Dog Grill was super fun! I came here with my parents and a guy I was dating at the time, and had a fab time. I don't know what nights they do it, but there was live music the night we came. You have to pay a cover, unless you are eatting, which we were. The burgers and hot dogs were superb, definitely complemented the high-energy environment. Their salads were pretty good as well, but the fruit salad I got frankly sucked...meh. My date and my dad got several beers, so what was suppose to be a cheap meal ended up being quite pricey, but that's what drinks tend to do.

I really like this place. Sweet Potato Fries!!! I visited this place because I'll be playing there with my silly, fun, little band around mid-November and so I wanted to check it out. I've been there twice now. The burgers are wonderful but the next time I go there I think I'll try one of their fancy hot dogs. I LOVE the live music. The Friday night Jazz band is great and I really love the Creole Jazz band on, I think, Wednesday evenings. The guy who plays that big tuba thing should have taken up guitar or piano instead because when he put that thing down and started singing we all loved his voice. Understand that the service is a little slow because they simply do not have a lot of floor staff, but if you know that going in you wont be disappointed with your experience. Just RELAX and take your time. Parking is very convenient. A garage is located directly across the street. After dinner we walked to the movie theater from the Barking Dog. Oh YEAH! One more thing....GREAT milk shakes.

Love it! The blue cheese burger was probably one of the best burgers I've tasted. Loved the sweet potato fries, the music, the atmosphere, and the service.

We stumbled in one night when we were trying to kill time before a concert. A friend recommended this place and I was curious to what they would have to serve a vegan. The owner told me the garden veggie sub without cheese would do and the sweet potato fries. So that is what I ordered. My boyfriend ordered a burger which you would think came with fries but did not. The place was empty but getting our food took awhile. Our server was kinda rude. When he refilled my boyfriend's water glass the water was dirty so my boyfriend asked for clean water which still came back dirty. I felt the staff was more interested in hanging out with themselves. They started moping the floors before we left, I was praying I would not slip and fall. The food was good. The sweet potato fries were awesome, the best I have had, really crunchy. The owner was really nice and said they hope to offer more vegan food. Now only if the staff were better...

This is, hands down, the best burger I have ever had. Juicy, high quality meat, thick, crispy bacon, fries cooked to order. When they first opened my friend and I came every Friday night and had the same thing, Papa Burger w/ Bacon and Cheese, extra crispy fries, sodas, and a shake. Their shakes are phenomenal, we once ordered an applie pie shake and they were out of apple pie ice cream, so the owner had them put a slice of apple pie into a plain milkshake, it was amazing. The burgers are so amazing, juice drips out of them the entire time, so eat over your basket. My favorite time to go is 1pm right after lunch rush but in time to get the lunch special, Burger Fries and a Coke. for only 12 bucks, it is an amazing and affordable lunch. I'm very picky about fries and theirs are best when served extra crispy with a side of ranch. a little hot when served, but perfect all the way through. A word of advice, they do get busy on the weekends as they have live music. I've never had bad service and have been in enough so that the owner knows me by name, and often times I don't even have to order. I've been there once for breakfast, and it was an amazing breakfast, don't remember what I ordered, but my girlfriend had their green eggs and ham which is made with pesto. Now that J St Cafe has Crepes, I have trouble going to breakfast other places.

Today I stopped at the Barking Dog Grill for the first time after being told over and over again how great it is. I have to say that the staff was really prompt and friendly and even though i wasnt able to stay to check out the band they had tonight i thought it was cool they were bringin in some live music. Notice how I havent mentioned the food yet? When i walked in I expected to get some damn tasty "grilled" food that was going to shine itself as bright as i heard from my friends. This, however, was not entirely true. I decided to get a chili cheese dog with a side of onion rings and as the onion rings were mighty tasty indeed the hot dog left room for improvement. Even though the hot dog didnt meet my expectations i didnt think it appropriate to deduct this establishment more than a star after providing a pleasant eating environment and (again) those very tasty onion rings.

Went back to give this place a shot again. It was worth it. All of our meals were good. Only gripe is the fact that there isn't a separate menu to order for kids. While my 4 year old was able to finish their smallest burger, I felt that ordering her a basket of fries would've been way too much. Our tweenages split the chili fries, and they were so good. I had the Philly Steak minus cheese and peppers, so yes basically just a mushroom and meat sanie. lol ... My fiance said he felt like he was in one of those Carl's Jr commercials where they have diners eat at some high end restaurant and then come out at the end with fast food bags. It is sort of weird to eat burgers by candle light, but whatever. Service was a bit spotty. There was ONE waiter for a Friday evening crowd. The poor guy was sweating buckets. Although that was kinda gross. Anyhow the owner was friendly and eventually came from the back of the counter to help out as well. Come to think of it a party of like 12-15 came in a little after us... still only ONE waiter. Odd. Final Verdict 3.5 stars!

The food was fantastic. Their hamburger patties are nice and juicy. The live jazz music added very nicely to the ambience. Wait staff was very friendly and the service prompt. I will be going there more often.

I love this place--food has been wonderful every time I've eaten here. Great place to bring young children--the owners are incredibly friendly and they welcome us heartily every time we go there. Music on some weekday evenings and most weekends, get there before 7 to miss the crowd if that bothers you. Once the music starts, service tends to get spotty. But I can deal with that b/c this place has great prices! My favorite dishes: any hamburger, sweet potato & regular fries, feta salad sandwich. The atmosphere is great--old chandeliers, exposed brick walls, exposed ductwork overhead, open kitchen. Update 9/5/09: The waitstaff has gotten much more efficient. UPDATE: 9/24/09--Oh yeah, did I mention they have a poetry series every third Tuesday featuring fab poets from all over, organized by Gillian Wegener?

I would give this place one star, but I haven't actually eaten here so I feel that might not be fair. I came here with my parents on a Thursday evening. We entered the restaurant and sitting right at the entrance was a woman (the owner I THINK but I'm not sure) CHOMPING down on a big plate of food. It was seriously the most disgusting thing ever. She hadn't even finished chewing when she started talking to us!!! GROSS! So that was disgusting. Then she asks us if we were there for the music, we weren't. Apparently if you answer "yes" you have to pay $10, if you answer "no" you don't have to pay but still get to listen to the music. Right. The woman doesn't even get out of her chair to show us to a table (she was sitting down eating...at the front of the restaurant) and instructs us to "sit wherever we want." So we try to "sit wherever we want" but after two separate "oh you can't sit there"s shouted to us from across the room, I finally blurted out, "Can you just show us to a table where we CAN sit?" Anyway, the restaurant was by no means full, and our server took forever just to get our drinks (two waters and a beer) so when she came back I told her we were just going to leave. I have no intentions of ever coming back to see if the food here is actually good.

Worst burger ever. I would not go back there if you paid me. The burger was dry as sand and just about as flavorful. The pathetic few onion rings that came with my burger were overcooked and dark brown, like the oil had been in the fryer too long. And, they serve bread and butter pickles without warning and don't even carry dill pickles. Atmosphere was just awful, as well. One big room where you can see the less-than-sanitary practices in the kitchen, not enough wall hangings and a painted-concrete floor come together to make it unreasonably loud for the small crowd that was there. On top of it all, the prices are entirely out of line with the terrible quality of food. I can't really emphasize how awful this place was, or do enough to prevent you from spending your hard-earned money on that trash. Service was amateurish, but at least they were trying.

Barkin Dog has everything I'm looking for in a restaurant: amazing burgers (try the bleu cheese!), contemporary urban decor, great atmosphere, good music, friendly owner who greets you, live local music, free wifi, delicious milkshakes and affordable prices. It's my first choice for a casual evening any night of the week in downtown Modesto. I'm heading there right now!

We stopped in last Saturday and didn't realize the place was not officially open yet. By the time I realized they weren't open yet, we were already sitting down, and the waiter was really nice about it. They actually were opening within the hour. We had their burgers and sweet potato fries. Their burgers were fabulous! The atmosphere looked like it would be fun and casual. They had a live band setting up, and we were the first ones in there. Nothing like a nice burger and some cold beer on tap! If I'm ever in Modesto again I know where to get a great meal.

This place has good burgers but is a bit on the pricey side for lunch. The avocado bacon cheeseburger and sweet potato fries will set you back about $13. The owner is cool and they have live jazz music on the weekends. it's a great place to take your date on a Friday night.

A tasty burger. The saffron chicken is excellent, the buffalo chicken-gorgonzola salad is fabulous, and the sweet potato fries are to die for. Live entertainment most weekends--they bring in local talent, and the crowd is always having fun (some have a cover, some are playing for tips). Wine/beer and wine cocktails. Friendly and fun.

i love this place. its a little hole in the wall but the beef is certified organic and the chef shows tons of flare. its not just a buger joint. the chef has added sophistication to this small place by using quality ingredients with an upscale atmosphere. Some nights they have a jazz band and it really sets the mood.

Some of the best burgers in town!! If you like spicy, try the "Cinco de Mayo" . . .papa size. My wife and I eat here 1-2 times per month and we really like it. The burgers are great and the atmosphere is unique. The owners are very friendly and greet us personally just about every time we go in. Try it, you'll love it.
