GREAT Breakfast spot in Livermore. I didnt go to the old location but the new one (was Giovanni's in Nob Hill shopping center) is adorable. They really updated the place and made it very nice. The food is AMAZING! I had the eggs benedict in phyllo dough - I highly recommend it with the sausage instead of ham. We've been on the hunt for a new breakfast stop for a while and I think we've found a place that we will frequent a lot. I've heard this place can get pretty busy but when we went we sat right down in the last spot in the restaurant (good timing!) The service is great too. If you get confused on what to order, because there is a lot, the waiter usually has great suggestions.

Rail road cafe has always been my favorite breakfast restaurant. The new location is open and inviting, it seems to always be busy with not a huge wait . The food is country meets gourmet, I think everyone will find something they will like there. Go try Railroad you will see!

This place sucks b*lls!! Food took WAY too long, then when we finally got it, it was underdone. It doesn't say much that the milk was the best part of our meal. Service was OK at best. And NO CREDIT CARDS??!! Are you kidding me? What year is it? You'd think they'd have a big sign on the door before you walk in that states they do not take Credit Cards, but no, surprise!! Sorry, all we had was $25 for our $29 meal, take it or leave it. In fact, you should be paying us to eat there!! Much better places to go in the area...

We had Breakfast here about 2 months ago and it was nothing to "Yelp about", as you can see from my delayed posting. I ordered the Benedict in Puff Pastry, which wasn't a horrible dish but it was just a little too 'busy' for being breakfast. Maybe I'm just old fashioned but I'd prefer plain old 'Eggs Benedict' from any other truck stop diner, over this fancy invention. My wife ordered the Lahaina French Toast, which was actually very good. I tried to switch with her but that didn't work out. Service was very attentive, always coming by to make sure our coffee was topped off.

I can't wait until they open in their new location... I can see it from our parking lot and I'm getting excited!

Ive been here since i was a kid and i always thought it was a decent breakfast restaurant. However, a couple weeks ago i tried something i've never really thought i would like... the swiss crepes. Those two tasty suckers were delicious! I dont see myself trying anything else until i get to the bottom of this dish infatuation.

This is one of the best kept secrets in Livermore. Best breakfasts and luches in the Tri Valley for the adventuresome. Unusual twists to the food they offer, such a their most delicious pumpkin custard served along with sandwiches and several breakfast items keep me going back every week for more. Fresh vegetables and fruit compliment many menu items. If you like the same old regularly served food, go somewhere else. The food here is adventurous and delicious and beautifully served. The friendly, excellent staff have all be with the restaurant for a long time so it feels familiar and comfortable. The prices are reasonable, the place is clean. The locals know that there's usually a wait on the weekends, but well worth it. They've have complimentary, pour yourself coffee by the door to drink until it's your turn. We love this non chain, privately owned restaurant.

We've been twice so far and can't wait to go again to try more of the menu. The sweet eggs benedict on the polenta cakes is my favorite. Great twist on the regular benedict. The puff pastry benedict has a really nice presentation and I love the artichoke but overall I liked the sweet version better than this savory version. My hubby is not quite as adventurous as me so he sticks to the country breakfast every time but I had a taste of his hash and the biscuits with gravy and they were both great. The kids had the pigs in a blanket combo which was a very generous portion for only $4.95, but it is actually bacon vs. sausage wrapped in pancakes. Still, they were happy. Feeling particularly gluttonous, we also ordered the bananas foster waffle for the table to share and it was good but a little heavy on the cinnamon. I think maybe the cinnamon, bananas, pecans and brown sugar sauce would have been better balanced by pancakes - all the toppings seemed to overwhelm the perfectly cooked fluffy waffle. Overall a great place for breakfast, but don't even think about coming here if you are counting calories - who knows how many days I'll have to spend at the gym working this off! :-) The cash only policy and the long waits are annoying but once you get a table the service is great. We had an extremely patient waitress who worked very hard to keep our toddlers happy and entertained. While you're waiting for a table they have free coffee outside which is horrible! Could they be watering it down on purpose? I almost didn't taste the cup of coffee they poured for me at the table, but that brew was much better. If you like a diner type atmosphere and an adventurous menu then you should definitely check this place out.

At the old location, the lady manager/owner chastised one of her workers 6-feet in front of me. I found her actions to be extremely ridiculous. The server was not very intelligent as well, though. She told me that I could not add bacon and eggs to my meal, no matter how much I paid. I have vowed never to go back and I have not. Note to the manger/owner, "Acquire some tact." -Good day.

This place is a tad pricier than a standard diner, but the food is far better. Their pumpkin bread french toast is fantastic, and they offer these little fruit cups with cream on top (oh, Lord, so good). Go for the spiced potatoes, the omelets, the custard, and the interesting flavors. This place is a breakfast and brunch joint, so it isn't open for dinner. They get very busy, especially on weekend mornings. They make a concession to that over-crowding by providing complimentary coffee outside, along with a table with a puzzle on it. The service has a standard small-town feel; it's neither great nor deplorable. The waitresses get the job done; sometimes they smile. This place is a hole in the wall in a dead shopping center. The locals know about it and turn out in good numbers. It's where I take company for breakfast, but the prices prevent me from eating there regularly. My take? Go there on a lazy weekday morning when you're playing hooky from work.

This WAS my favorite spot in the Tri-Valley area to get Breakfast; I'd even drive from Oakland if I had the urge. However as of today I will no longer come back. Today, 3-16-08, I took a date for Breakfast here, and we drove in from Oakland. We were told it was a 15 minute wait, however 20 mins past and 3 people that had shown-up after us were seated before us, all of the same sized 2 person army. I inquired what I believed to be a simple over-sight and was met by the Boss-Lady in Charge of seating, with an attitude invoking that of a hostile lady: "Are you capable of understanding how lines work?" she asked. Needless to say we immediately left for Vics All Star Cafe of Pleasanton. I will never make my way back to this hole. It was a favorite no longer. Thumbs down all the way around for this stink hole; unless you are a townie or a friend of the owner miss this place altogether.

I go here when I'm not in the mood for the traditional greasy cafe breakfast. I am in love with the Swiss sausage crepes ..so yummy... and served with scrambled eggs that have bell peppers, artichoke hearts, onion, and sometimes tomatoes ..very good. It doesn't make 5 stars for me because their dishes can be very give and take. Some of them are incredibly delicious, some are bland, and some are just not tasty in my opinion. I like that most of their dishes have quirky twists to them and combination that you wouldn't have thought of. The service is decent and it gets better as they remember you. The no credit card policy kind of sucks, but luckily I carry a check book. I look forward to checking out the new location in February.

  • Charles H.

No Credit Cards! Ive never enjoyed carrying $50 bills around, but wait they arent accepted here! So two 20's later I had a good meal with my parents. The Swedish Pancakes are quite good, but the lack of hashbrowns really takes its toll on my 2-Star rating. Yes I can also confirm that RRC will be moving into the Gianna's building which will hopefully be a good move but the location itself is not very good...

We now live in a condo just steps from this place and I've got one word for this place: dangerous! OMG - they have a really tasty menu, filled with way fancier, gourmet-like food than you'd expect from your average breakfast place!! So I guess the point is, it's not your average breakfast place. It's a really good breakfast cafe with an imagination, great food, great service, and a staff that actually cares about what they do whether it's front of house or back of house. I will write in all caps now the one thing to remember and not forget BRING CASH!! They don't take the plastic - just the green stuff or a check - whatever that is! Back to the food... there are items on the menu that are admittedly a bit too complex, to aspirational, too downright funky for many people - but in a town like this - the fact that someone is pushing the envelope is, quite frankly, refreshing - and charming. They are helping me to throw out my preconceived notions about rural towns near bigger more important towns and accept towns and their occupants on more than just face value. The railroad cafe is turning out solid and interesting food and while you might not like all of it I say A+ for the effort!! Did I say BRING CASH?? Don't forget!

It blows my mind that this place even exists. It's like if the Iron Chef took over a Denny's. Highly recommend for a weekend brunch.

Livermore is very short on breakfast places and Railraod has benefitted - always a wait on Sat. and Sun mornings. Friendly wait staff overall good food, plus come hungry the portions are huge!

Love this place!! Have been coming here for years and the food is always, always, always GREAT! In fact, this is my MOST favorite restaurant. Unique and well thought out menu and wonderful coffee. Service is always good and if you get seated in Janet's section(up front) your in for a real treat. Am just amazed at the bad reviews because they don't take plastic. So bring cash, have a great meal and quit whining!!

OMG, I love this place! I discovered it about six months ago, and I've been there at least once a week since then. I would have written a review sooner, but I just signed up on Yelp ten minutes ago. LoL. I have never had lunch here, but I've probably tried almost every breakfast item they offer :) It is fabulous. The french toast is yummy, as well as the banana/caramel waffle, however I'm somewhat of a health nut, so my USUAL is the egg-white omelette with spinach, mushrooms, and (sometimes) bacon and cheese. The wheat toast is the best EVER. Try it with the blackberry jam. Go for the fresh fruit over the potatoes, it has a light yogurt on it that's fabulous. I crave this place all the time!

This place is great for breakfast. The menu is varied and pretty creative, and everything usually comes out pretty delicious. Prices ain't bad either. Cozy on the inside in a nice, unassuming location.

Today I went to Livermore to check out wineries, note to self don't do this on a Sunday as you have to wait until Noon to taste wine. So I thought breakfast would be nice treat. I stumbled upon the Railroad cafe. I sat at the bar, note to others if you don't like the 30minute wait sit in the bar area its easier to get a seat. While my wait was not long the wait for my food was and there was something missing on my plate ...I got the benedict in puff pastry and I think I should of gone for the most reccomended swedish pancackes ( duh I am swedish ) alas no, I wanted to fill up to enjoy wine and be still able to drive. Well, the coffee was hot and good black until the third cup toward the end it tasted bitter. The service was excellent and it was fun to watch the kitchen sweat - Literally. I might go back but only if I am in a group. Next weekend will be crazy and the cafe is set back in what I suppose is a shopping strip but, the traffic on the main Ave by noon was bumper to bumper. And I was happy to walk around town. Back to Railroad cafe, the kitchen was a little slow but again its Sunday morning things are suppose to slow down a bit. Take out isn't available on Sunday mornings.

I'd give it only one star for the food alone. The menu doesn't offer much healthy options. Most items are either overloaded with sugar, fat, or both. Prices are also higher than say, Country Waffles. The extra star was for service, because although they lack healthy choices, the service is actually quite good. Too bad we won't be going back until they provide healthier options.

Railroad Cafe is by far the best breakfast/lunch place you'll probably ever eat at. This restaurant is where you'll find all the locals sitting at the counter. Although the pancake/french toast-type foods are phenomenal, its my opinion that they should be more noted for their salchicha sausage chipotle & eggs or their welsh rarebit. As odd as they may sound, they taste absolutely heavenly. Beware, if you plan on going mid-morning on either saturday or sunday you might have to wait 10-15 minutes to get a table. Once you eat there it will be no surprise that the head cook is actually a chef.

I really like this place. They have a unique menu and most of their dishes are very good. I was disappointed in the potato pancake but otherwise, have loved everything else. The chicken salad is awesome! The down sides are the hours, wait and cash only.

Well, we finally went and tried the Railroad Cafe per the recommendations on this site. Honestly, I was really disappointed. Now, I'm used to eating in some of the most up and coming places in SF and in the Sonoma Valley and am the child of a food critic. I'm used to trying new things. But this was just bad! We didn't wait long as we went early...but a few things just make it not worth it. The service was a bit off with several items forgotten and timeliness once we sat down slow. My french toast was mediocre, with no syrup for 10 minutes. My sausage was cold, not just cooled down, but cold! And my over-hard eggs, were runny! The server had to take it back to be warmed up. They brought me back my original sausage basically burned. It was hot alright. One thing that bothered me is that they took a piece of sausage that I had clearly eaten from and put it back on the grill with everyone else's food. I don' t think that would pass a health inspection. My husband's country fried steak, was not fried, but grilled. And gooey. We both would have been ok with it if my food had been cooked and his was as described. But neither happened. We honestly sat there saying, "well, we're not coming back here." Maybe it was just an off day but I was not impressed at all.

Service was awesome, almost to good. One of those places in Livermore that you know has been there for awhile. Menu is very different. When first glancing at the menu I was totally stoked with the names and descriptions of the food. Unfortunately, the food was not very good. I had the Country Breakfast which included gravy and biscuits, spinach tomato and scrambled eggs, and the most disgusting cornbeef and hash ever (I sware it had tuna in it). I'm sorry, maybe I'm a snob, I did like the vibe of the place, the service was fantastic, just the food wasn't good. Maybe it was the breakfast, but others at my table were not impressed.

My favorite place to eat lunch in Livermore. I like going here because I can get breakfast or lunch. My husband likes getting breakfast while my favorite is the chicken with bacon and asparagus sandwich - so good!!

I can't believe this gem of a restaurant is in Livermore. The food here is very, very creative and full of flavor. I love their potato pancakes for breakfast. The sandwiches, soups and salads are all very good too. The waffles are great with that delicious raspberry cream. It looks like a small-town diner, but the food is seriously out of this Tri-Vally world.

The breakfast is so varied...there are a million different items on the menu and the combinations are heavenly. The wait can be extreme on the weekends, so it is best to get there early (before 9:30). Breakfast here in the morning and head off to the Livermore Wineries for a good weekend daytrip.

I have been to this restaurant twice in their old location and did not like it either time, the food was just plain bad. I figured I would give them another try and was all excited and had a positive attitude to have a new good experience with them. We went this morning, Father's Day morning, at about 10:30 and asked to sit at a table rather than a booth because of accessibility issues. The woman taking the names said ok I have a table but then after consulting an old woman who appeared to be an owner or manager this old woman manager loudly announced "No we have no tables today they are only for large parties". The nice lady taking names tried to ask again but the rude old manager just loudly snapped at her again and said tables were only for large parties. Not only will I never go there again but I will make sure that nobody I know ever goes there again and I will be doing research to see if there are any complaints I can file over ADA accessibility discrimintation. If I could rate them a zero I would. What a terrible way to treat somebody - shame on you you nasty old woman.

  • Melly G.

The food was really, really good. Unfortunately, the my experience was absolutely horrid. From the person at the front door (not the hostess but some lady who was "helping" her or getting in her way was more like it) being a total grouch-a-saurus to the women behind the counter giving the kids snotty looks while they ate (OK- I have kids, I get it, not everyone's favorite restaurant guest) but the KICKER and why I am rating them a 1 was the OWNER giving my kids literally, the filthiest look I have EVER seen as we were getting ready to leave (having just dropped $55 on breakfast) and they were guilty of nothing more than being whiney. I have kids- I love them but this does not mean that I am immune to the fact that they can be annoying but seriously- this woman was OFFENSIVE! So, while I had really looked forward to trying this place, having heard great things and I really enjoyed my breakfast, grouchy servers aside, I will not frequent a place where I am not welcome to bring my family at 1:30 in the afternoon for a bite to eat. They did not have a line out the door and I have to ask myself, with food this good....do ya think it could be the horrible attitude of the owner that rubs off on the others and makes it OK to be downright cantankerous? Perhaps. But, I am not going back to find out again.

Oh my goodness... I have found a new favorite breakfast place! I should define my concept of "good"-- it is not large: It is unique and has a wide variety of choices... beyond bacon and eggs. To be the best, the food has to be fantastic!. Here to now, my favorite has been Katie's Place/Corner in Carmel and San Ramon because of their Eggs Benedict. I will say that for Eggs Benedict, they still cannot be beat. But for UNIQUE and Great tastes, Railroad Cafe tops my list. Three of us went and shared. I had a Chorizo hash with eggs, avocado, tomato, etc. It came with a pineapple tamale. It was fabulous. One of the others had the eggs benedict. I did that in lower case because it was not classic in any stretch of the imagination. It was made with a delicious Swiss sausage. Been to Switzerland often and never had anything that tasted like this, but it was great and a custom recipe from the head chef. It was not on an English muffin neither, but it was delicious. It came with a pumpkin custard that was "oh my god" good. The other dish was Swedish pancakes... traditional and tasty with a side of fresh strawberries in creme fraiche. I was so glad we shared. The servings were adequate that the three large men still had leftovers. We met the head chef. Impressive and creative. He tinkers a lot and his focus on presentation is obvious. You almost want to take a picture before you eat it. I'm a convert!

Went here on a Sunday morning around 9am. Service was very good and extremely friendly. Our glasses were never empty. Our waitress brought over markers and paper for our daughter to color on. Our food was delivered quickly. Now to the food. Oh my gosh it was phenomenal! I had the Blue Corn Jalapeño Pancakes. They were topped with chipotle bacon, mango salsa and orange syrup. It came with half of a banana drizzled with orange syrup; and blackberries & kiwi covered with yogurt. I was a bit worried about the orange syrup, but it turned out to be perfect. The pancakes were just the right amount of spicy and sweet. The chipotle bacon on top was delicious. I can't tell you about my husband and daughters' breakfast because they ate theirs so fast I didn't get a chance to check theirs out. They all three said it was fantastic (even picky 8 year old loved it). I live about 45 min away and I would drive back just to eat here (it was that good)

Great breakfasts and especially brunches in the weekend seems to start a day right. What can be better than to find a quaint unobtrusive dineresuqe place in Livermore right before wine-tasting? Railroad Cafe is located conveniently on the corner of Merietta and Stanley/Fenton. It has a large lot and plenty of friendly wait-staff. My friend and I were on the waiting list which we were informed would take roughly 20 minutes. 10 minutes later we were seated. Our waitress was timely and friendly without being irritating. The breakfast menu is served all day with an extensive selection. I opted for the Pumpkin Polenta "benedict". I love pumpkin, polenta, and poach eggs! Did I go to heaven??!! I was so thrilled. In between the polenta and eggs was a bed of lightly sauteed spinach, cherry tomatoes, onions, and more covered with their Hollandaise sauce. Layered right on top of that was their Swiss sausage and cheese. (ok - I had no idea the Swiss know how to do sausage. I NEED to know where to get me some of that!) It was scrumptious. My only complaint was that the polenta could have been warmer. It came with a pumpkin mousse(?) pudding with cranberry compote and sauce. That was a bit rich for me but delicious no less. I finished the whole plate aside except for the pudding. My friend ordered the Country Breakfast comprised of cornbeef hash with eggs scrambled with cheese and country gravy and biscuits. The hash was good which I stole a bite. She noted that the biscuits and gravy was mediocre and so was the scramble. I will have to go back and try it for myself. Both plates costed under $15 and with drinks, tax, and tip it was under $40 for both of us. We're generous tippers and I tip based on service. This service deserved 20% and more. With such an extensive menu, it's definitely a place I like to go back to savor more of their items. Oh, yeah, and the wine wasn't bad either - with a nice belly full of good food, it was easier to sample all the varieties...but that's for another review.

I have been going to the Railroad Cafe for 20 years. I have always loved many of the items on many of the different menus but have a few all time favorites. I have probably had the Cobb salad more than 100 times. I used to not be able to finish the salad - not so any more. The salad used to have large chunks of avocado, large chunks of egg, whole olives, large pieces of thick smoked bacon and lots of bleu cheese. Not so anymore - it has become a much smaller salad with small chopped pieces so that the tastes and flavors become muddled and nothing special. I will probably continue to go there (it's kind of tradition) but I will be looking for something better. And I will be sure to tell the owner, waiters and chef. So my review really has to do with the salad and not the restaurant as a whole.

What a major disappointment! Waiting for over 30 min to get food served. Then had to wait another 10 min for the side of bacon that was ordered with all the other dishes. They should have comped the bacon considering they obviously forgot it. Then to add insult they add 18% gratuity for 5 people at a diner with slow service. Not to mention the fact that my 3 year old toddler was the fifth person who didn't even eat! Lastly and the worst of all is they were so completely rude to us and my daughter. Just because she got out of her seat and wanted to walk after sitting there over an hour they yelled at her. So here is a fair warning, don't bring your children here. Totally ruined our morning!

I've been to the Railroad cafe twice - let's establish that right away. Both times, the food was exceptional. Please duly ignore anyone's review that says the food is "OK" or "I don't get what everyone is talking about" because they simply don't have the palette & probably think truck stop food is Haute Cuisine. Railroad Cafe's food is fantastic, bangin', the bees knees, period. It is an eclectic, gourmet mix of traditional American, Italian, Basque and Swedish. Prepare your taste buds for the ride of their lives, because Railroad Cafe doesn't hold back. Some of the combinations sound whacky, odd or just plain wrong, but I guarantee your mouth (and your belly) will be happy. NEEDS IMPROVEMENT: Personality. Customer Service. Let me explain: They don't think like a customer. Firstly, they have strange policies, like not seating a group unless all guests have arrived. OK. Understandable if, like usual, the place is packed to the gills with happy munching patrons. Why give seats to non-present guests when paying and present patrons are in abundance. I get that. But there has to be some compromise. Accommodation is the name of the game in the Service Industry. Secondly, the service you do get is sub-par. It comes across as if they know how good the food is, and almost feel like you should be paying them for the experience, as well. One of the owners served me today. When undecided in what to get, I exclaimed "It all looks so darn good!" She simply said "Yes." and walked away. After receiving my food, I was checked-on (this was the final time I was approached before she brought my check) and she asked if there was anything else I'd like. I said "No. This is heavenly!" She again simply said "Yes." in a bored sort of way and walked-off. This while another manager sat at a table surrounded by patrons at other tables and proceeded to give one of her waitress staff a not-so-glowing review in no-so-quiet tones. It put me off, to be frank. Professionalism, people! That, coupled with the other somewhat negative reviews on their customer service and the couple at the next table complaining to each other about how terrible the service was, really set the tone. Oh, and I never got a refill on my water - not one. I love the food, don't get me wrong. I WILL go back. I just won't expect much or be leaving much of a tip, other than "Get better at treating your customers right. They are the reason you are still in business."

I would like to give this place 5 stars, but for two issues: first, they changed the chicken salad and blintzes off the menu, and second, they are cash only. I probably would have eaten at this place 10 more time in the last year if i didn't have to go to the ATM first. I realize credit card companies charge 3%, but I bet they would increase their sales by 20% if they didn't make it so hard to give them money.

  • Mike M.

The three stars is mostly because I used to really like this place but some where along the way I just stopped wanting to eat there. Based on how busy they were during a visit just after the move I don't think my lack of patronage is hurting any though. My wife and I only eat fish or veggies. This makes breakfast a bit of an adventure at most places with the choices being very limited. Railroad used to be a good bet to have at least a few tasty vegetarian friendly dishes on their menu and while they still have choices I haven't been excited about any of them in a long time. The cash only thing is odd, but not a major problem as I'm old enough to feel uncomfortable if I don't have at least some cash in my wallet. The wait staff have always been friendly and attentive so no complaints there. The regular menu changes are probably less of an issue for people with less restrictive diets. When you're used to only having a very limited number of choices it can be very frustrating to no longer be able to get something that you know you are going to enjoy.

Most amazing breakfast money can buy. The atmosphere is very home-y and the servers are very genuine and helpful. The menu is very unique and you can find interesting twists on classic breakfast and lunch food. I love to go here for a nice weekend breakfast, although, I have net been for dinner (yet). Every time I have eaten here I've ordered something new and it has always been consistently fresh, delicious and of the highest quality. Just about anyone can serve eggs, but it takes something special to make the most important meal of the day the most exciting and the Railroad Cafe does it every time.

This is a spectacular place for breakfast. I've been working my way through the breakfast items on the upper left part of the first page of the menu: the blackberry Monte Cristo, salmon lox and bagel sliders, blue corn and jalapeno pancakes (seriously!), and the macadamia nut bread pudding with fresh fruit and a scrambled egg and ham tortilla wrap. Working through these sometimes unlikely-sounding offerings has been an absolute delight. Plus, I enjoy torturing my Facebook friends with the food photos I take after being served! :) Run, walk, drive, fly, or crawl to get here for breakfast. Mmmmmmm!

Super tasty egg white, spinach, and cheese omelette with extra tasty cinnamon toast and fruit!! My only complaint is the price of coffee at $2.25, but then the food prices are white reasonable. They have all kinds of unique and tasty sounding breakfast creations. I found the service to be very quick and friendly on a Thursday morning about 9:30am. I'll be back!

Great restaurant! The menu is an amazing collection of imaginative comfort food with lots of fresh fruit and produce. The best part about it is they even have a selection of smaller dishes which I LOVE. I've been coming here every week for a couple years and the service has always been friendly and efficient. Get the half Eggs Benedict or the Swedish crepes- Addicting.

They are good and have good food. The service is a bit spotty if you are not a white hair. Also they are non accommodating on their menu. I mean I don't go around making my own menu items up but sometimes you have to please your customer. Overall though a great place in Livermore to get a bite.

I've eaten here several times - looks like a "down home" place but when you open the menu, you'll find that it's anything but! Very creative dishes and generous portions served in a family atmosphere! NOTE: For those with wheat or gluten issues, there are dishes you can eat here and the head chef is helpful and knows his stuff. Just beware of a waitress named Cindy who was unnecessarily surly with me when I tried to work out my allergy with her. Even with Cindy though, I'd go back for the great food!

WILL NEVER EAT HERE AGAIN! HORRIBLE SERVICE / HORRIBLE MAITRE D' / HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE Food wasnt that great... I'd take Dean's in P-town or Country Waffles over this train wreck of a place any day... No credit / debit cards? Not even laundromats are "cash only" nowadays! Refuse to seat you until your entire party is there? WTH? Sorry, I'm not making my almost 76 year old dad walk from the end of the parking lot and really it's only going to take my husband 5 minutes to park the car and walk in, yes you can seat us, but you just choose not to for some asinine reason "it's our policy"... it took the waitperson 10 minutes to come over and introduce herself, etc... if i could give this place negative stars, i would...

Where do I start.... Do you like cold eggs, raw potatoes and over cooked bacon - well then this place is for you. However, if you have not recently gotten out of prison and are use to eating normal tasting food I would strongly suggest eating somewhere else. On top of the low quality food, there is normally a wait (surprising I know - but in all fairness it is mostly old people) and once you finally get to your table the service is going to suck... I have gone to this place three times now and each time it gets worse and worse. Avoid!!!

Just had dinner at Railroad Cafe last night. O.M.G. - I figured it would be pretty good, as I am a perennial fan of their brunch. But this was great. Yes - still cash-only service, and they really cater to the early-bird set (only serve dinner Wed-Sat from 4:30-8). Because of this, it was a little sleepy. Unlike the brunch service, there were plenty of open tables, and no wait for a large party. Bring good company, though, as it was a bit quiet for my tastes. There were 7 of us, and we each got something different. I shared the skirt steak (yum, yum, yum) and the salmon (yum, yum) with my friend, but we all were passing plates around. Mom got the liver and onions, which was basically the best liver and onions I've ever had. My sister got the calamari steak with chipotle bacon, which was delicious. Someone had the chicken in macadamia sauce, which we were all using our dinner rolls to sop up. The only negative that I could mention from a food standpoint was that the veggies that came with the skirt-steak were a little over-done from cooking in the oh-so-delicious teriyaki broth, but that's just a matter of personal taste. I'd still order it again. This place only started serving dinner back in January, so I'm hoping I either came on a slow night or people start catching on to this place soon. It's scrumptious. And reasonable. And has parking. And I really want a chance to order the other half of the menu next time I'm in town.

The food is great! What I can't get past is the floor manager yelling at her staff in front of the guests. I've been there multiple times and every time she is loud, obnoxious, and a flat out b****!

Used to live down the street and frequented Railroad Cafe many times. I have had almost everything on the menu and have not been unhappy with any of it. Sometimes the waiters are hit or miss but that common with most restaurants. They put their own flare on some classic dishes that I really like. The Eggs Benedict in Puff Pastry is amazing and the pastry is super buttery good, the Pumpkin Bread is amazing and most breakfast items will come with Cinnamon Toast (Bread). The Ham Scramble with Potato Pancake is my favorite and go to meal! They also serve amazing lunches and they occasionally have some soups on special that are to die for!! If you are looking for a consistently great place to eat, you wont be disappointing coming here!!

Our experience this morning was not a good one. The Waitress was rude and she spilled butter all over my Mom and I. My shirt is now ruined. She did not even say sorry or offer to comp our meal. The Food was ok, my corn beef hash was flavorless and the potatoes were hard and boring. I would not go back here because the food was expensive and flavorless and who would want butter spilled on them!

This place is unique.... Good and bad I suppose. My friend and I got their version of Eggs Benedict, instead of being on an English Muffin it is on puff pastry. The Eggs Benedict were pretty good but the egg was way over cooked therefore it had no runny yolk, which is my favorite part!!!!! My dad "made" his own omelet and he loved it, it was stuffed full of the fillings. We also got a side of pancakes and those were delicious!!!!! The menu is very different, it took me awhile to decide what I wanted just because the majority of things just sounded kind of funky. I would not rush back here any time soon but I may come back eventually to give it another try.

Another great find thanks to Yelp! Atmosphere is typical breakfast joint, but the menu has something different to offer. Portions are ample, and the food delicious. Potato pancakes for me...great choice! The Swedish pancakes were calling my name too, but will give that a go next time. Needs some tweaking on their coffee. Good eats for breakfast!

This place is unassuming, casual dining on the outside, something very unique going on inside. Cant wait to try the Monte-Cristo Sandwich next time I'm there. The Basque eggs are to die for and the strawberry cheese blintzes were off the chain.

I am overdue for writing an update, but after many, many experiences with the Railroad Cafe, I have to advise people to go elsewhere...especially if you are with a group. Why? Because they will not seat you until your entire group has arrived. What the hell? This has happened to me on three separate occasions. I used to think it was a space issue and that once the moved into their new location this nonsense would stop, but it hasnt. God forbid you are the first in your party to arrive you will be instructed to wait, and if you inquire about getting a seat, rest assured you will be snapped at by one particular employee who (I think) wants to ensure you never return. I went there the morning after my wedding with a couple members of our party and we were treated like garbage. Unacceptable. Im done Railroad. Done, its over. Its not me, its you. Ive given you plenty of chances, and over the years I have come to delight in your menu...but your employees are a nightmare. Also, they dont take credit cards. Whats up with that?

I came today with my 9 month old son for some breakfast. This is a cash only place so be warned! The staff are very friendly and accommodating to kids. I only ordered an egg white omelet, coffee and a pancake - I can tell ya, the pancake is delicious. I will come back again for other things on menu and if experience is better than last, will upgrade my review.

Food is good. Portions WAY TOO BIG. Went there with my elderly mother. We looked up and our waitress (Judy) was moving Mom's walker from the out of the way but accessible place were I had parked it to the entrance. She did not ask or tell us that she was moving it. Service was very UNFRIENDLY. I raised a finger when she passed by as she had not attended to us in 20 min and she growled, "Hold on, you're not my only table". There were about 20 people total in the restaurant at the time. This is not the first time Judy has been short/rude. Service is not the job for her. As long as you're not in a group you might enjoy the food. The choices are many. Plan to box up your meal to take home. When it came time to pay I paid the bill + $2 for tip. Judy actually followed us outside and shocked and embarrassed us when she said "you forgot to pay the bill". She held a tray from which $5 was missing. I asked her to look into her pocket as I had counted the cash twice. She told us we'd have to come in to discuss. I would have if Mom hadn't been with me. Instead I gave her another $5. I guess she was determined to get a big tip.

Very tasty! My husband and I were impressed with the extensive menu with everything from usual favorites to unique dishes, like Basque Eggs Benedict! I definitely recommend it. The poached eggs come with swedish sausage (i think), fresh cut peppers, spinach, onions and grape tomatoes, covered with a tomato-based sauce rather than hollandaise. It comes with a generous serving of pumpkin custard topped with raspberry compote. My husband enjoyed a breakfast combination plate of Swedish Pancakes (absolutely delicious), blintzes topped with fresh fruit, and a slice of pumpkin polenta covered in a sweet gooey mess. We're personally not fans of the polenta, but those darned Swedish Pancakes took my breath away. Many reviewers received bad service, but we had very good service. Our waitress was very hospitable, and our coffee mug was never empty. Seriously, she'd "warm up our cup" after we've only taken one sip. We had fun and look forward to going back and trying the rest of the menu!

As i have been reading the comments here at yelp.com for the Railroad, i notice that some of these people are either correct about the place or "WTF is wrong with you!" I have notice that people always want to order what they want like pancakes and omelet but sometimes it doesn't work out. I can understand your frustration if you can't get what you want but thats how this place work by making some alternative move to their business. WIth out this alterations, the Railroad Cafe would not be the excellent place that it is today. I used to work near the Railroad and would try to go to here for lunch all the time. One of my favorite plates here is their House Turkey sandwich(Before they modified it, now they put tomatoes in it but its still good). I used to get this with french fries but once in a while i used to get it with a salad or a bowl of fruit. Probably one of their best sandwich that they have. Then i tried their Burgers. Each one was scrumptious. Especially their new one i just had recently, it felt like i was holding a 2 or 3 pound medicine ball! Their lunch menu is amazing but their breakfast is incredible. their waffles are always delightful the same with their pancakes. Their omelets have the right amount of cheese in them every time i order it. Their specialty breakfast is always good too. Recently i tried their Chorizo breakfast and it was amazing! the other one that i always get is their ranch breakfast (if your a big guy and want to eat a lot, get this. It will fill you up!). Now with the Railroad Cafe being open for dinner, i can come over and enjoy some of their speciality dinners. I have been there once during their dinners and the food was really good. one of the few things that i was surprised during the dinner is that it was kinda quite. Usually during the morning or lunch time, it is crazy busy with a 30 to 45 minute wait. Dinner, i walked in and they sat me down right away. The other surprising thing was that they served alcohol. YES PEOPLE ALCOHOL! They have beer, wine and speciality drinks too. The wine was probably my biggest surprise because they didn't have the big name wines. They had local wine which brings new customers if they like it, i know i did. The last one that surprise me the most, and probably to all of you, THEY ACCEPT CREIDT CARDS!!....no only cash but CREDIT CARDS. if you read the yelp categories for "do they take cards" and it says no, then they are lying. YES YELP IS LYING. lol. They do not take it only during dinner but during breakfast and lunch too. Final comment: those who say Railroad cafe is the worst place, or never will come here ever again....well your missing out on great food. Keep it up Railroad Cafe!

Apparently change can be a good thing. I had a great experience at the Railroad cafe with their Pumpkin Polenta French Toast and an unbelievable Olallieberry Crisp, tart and so very tasty. The food was served quickly, the coffee cups were never empty and the staff was always checking on us. A huge improvement over what the business used to be. In the old establishment it was a cash/check only business and having anticipated that I do not know if they take charge cards.

Where do I begin. The breakfast here is amazing and the customer service is outstanding!!!! I've only been here twice and it us by far the best experience I have EVER had at a restaurant. The first visit was so good, we decided to take our friends on the second visit. Even though the place was crowded, the manager was more than helpful with our party of 10, mainly kids. The waitress was super sweet and patient even with the kids, that were working my nerve. I actually felt sorry for her, but she kept a smile on her face. Even though our tip was added in and the waitress crossed out the tip line, we still gave her and extra $30.00 tip because she soooo deserved it! I am confident that after any future visits to Railroad Cafe, we will always leave happy.

As others have said it is cash only. I called this morning to check if they have upgraded to the 21st century by accepting atm in their new location, and this is what the lady not so nicly told me: "We don't take plastic of any kind, only cash or checks" -um, is it really worth loosing business because you are so cheap to loose the 1% charge to accept "plastic". hrm, I would think with this policy checks would be out the door too. Dear Railroad cafe, I like eating at your place, but people don't carry cash anymore. You are inconviencing your customers by making us get cash out. Please start accepting "plastic". thx its bad because now we are so limited on breakfast places, and I'm getting sick of eating at country waffles.

French toast was forgettable. Basic sliced sourdough. Swedish pancakes were dry and tough. They overmixed the batter. Sausage was good, but I think it was Aidelle's. I can get it at Raleys. They had other breakfast standards, but with goat cheese and polenta on them. Good for them, I guess. Cash only. I guess it's all about their convenience, not the customer's. There are better options for breakfast nearby and far. I'll pass.

I think the location is very convenient and the venue has the makings for a great neighborhood spot. But there's one problem, the food wasn't that good. When we were seated it seemed that the waitress didn't want us in her section, I shook that off. I ordered something very simple (from a menu with not many choices) Pancakes and French Fries. I've found that not many places can make Country Fried Potatoes like my southern raised grandmother, so it's safer to just order french fries. My friend ordered a peanut butter and banana sandwich. The sandwich also had strawberries and the side was scrambled eggs (I know right) The food arrived very quickly my pancakes were cooked longer than they should have been and had that burnt taste, not to mention there were some type of dust particles in the syrup (that I strained with a napkin before using) The french fries weren't any better. It seemed they had been sitting and re fried and brought to our table. My friend enjoyed her sandwich but I didn't get a vibe that she enjoyed the atmosphere.

I HATE their new policy of not seating you until your entire party is present. So, if people come in after you and have everyone in their party accounted for, they may get your table and then you'll be put on the waiting list for a table once your friends arrive. This isn't some hoity toity restaurant, just give me a freakin' table! Food is still pretty good and the wait staff is improving.

More like 3.5 stars... When it was small, it was really good. I will never forget my daughter losing her first tooth here. To which everyone in the "room", yes it was THAT small lost her first tooth. Everyone applauded.. How loosing a tooth in a restaurant demands applause still befounds me, but, it was heart-warming... Since then, it has been good, but not as great. Maybe their new location coming soon at poor Gianna's(the last meal we ate their was superb! Sigh Gianna's, we loved you mostly, but your snobbery was a bit too much!), will bring better service, etc. I am hoping!

  • Paul M.

The score is actually about 3/1/2- 4 stars for the food, (pretty tasty) and 2 stars for any business that only takes cash. It's ok that you have an accountant, but if he's that good, he'll figure a way for you to actually accept credit/debit cards at the 3 percent rate, and hide your money too.. Get a new accountant and act like a real business, then I'll return. I bet they take in about 20-30% less business because of their stone age business practices.

I had heard good things about this place so my boyfriend & I went to check it out. I ordered biscuits & gravy and he got potato pancake, and a chicken fried porkchop (porkloin?). It all looked nice when presented until my boyfriend swore there was blood under the gravy covering his porkchop.... and sure enough we scraped the gravy & cut the inside and a pool of raw meat blood gathered. IT WAS DISGUSTING. We sent it back to be cooked and the waitress accomodated us, while making a face like she wasn't surprised. (It was the most she spoke to us the whole time) Anyway after it returned, we were relieved until he started to break in on his potato pancake. With one bite he looked at me, pushed away his plate and said "This shit is raw too," and I couldnt believe it so I took a bite for myself... and the sliced potatoes inside were raw too :( After that we had lost our appetite and left, only paying for mine... and the waitress insisting we return.. But we won't be.

The Railroad Cafe hearkens back to the old fashion cafe with a counter to sit at, booths, wait staff who has been there awhile and know many of the customers, and when credit cards didn't exist. You got that right they don't take credit cards (lose a full star for just that) just cash or check and they don't even have an ATM on premise. Don't get me wrong the food is good, the wait staff is very nice, and if I lived in Livermore I could see this as a regular place to have breakfast and lunch (they aren't open for dinner). On the culinary side I feel they try to hard while at the same time don't try hard enough. I had the eggs Benedict in puff pastry which was very good but really didn't need the artichoke hearts and tomatoes which actually distracted from the nice taste of the pastry, poached eggs, ham, and sauce. The fruit parfait (fresh fruit with yogurt, vanilla pudding and tapioca pudding) was too much too (although it was tasty). The real disappointment was the corned beef hash which my wife had. I could have easily popped open a can of Hormel corned beef hash and got the EXACT food. The upside is that the biscuits and gravy were very nice. We got a piece of spice cake to go which was tasty but a bit on the pricey side. Other than the desert the meal was a very good value. Bottom line if I am in the Livermore area for breakfast I will definitely want to try their other creative dishes. I hope in the meantime they join this century to allow credit cards. Also maybe they will rethink their corned beef hash (maybe some chunks of corned beef with diced country potatoes?).

Perfect breakfast experience. The service was prompt, REALLY friendly, and the coffee was always topped off. The food was excellent, the best eggs I have had in a looooong time. The menu is not what you expect, a lot of extremely creative items (lots of flavors used together), and some of the usual fare. You cannot classify this as a greasy spoon, the meal was light and hearty at the same time, but definitely not greasy! See you again soon RR Cafe!

Living all the way in Fremont, I don't get to visit the Railroad Cafe as often as I'd like. I've never even made it past ordering off the breakfast menu in the approximately 20 times I've been there. I always get stuck either yearning for one of their delicious breakfast specialties I've already had, or I'm compelled to try one of their new takes on breakfast. I so want to try their yummy-looking lunch options, but their breakfast is just too stinking good! The Cristo sandwich is one of my personal favorites, a genius concoction of ham, sweet fruits, and melty cheese sandwiched between two soft pieces of french toast. I used to hate those savory-sweet combinations, but this dish lured me to the other side, with no hope of return. I do agree with most every one else that it's idiotic that they don't take credit cards. Also, the service is never fantastic or even very warm. It's usually just adequate. That's still not enough to stop me from coming back. I just love their food too much. (BTW, unseasoned eggs or potatoes? What do you think the salt and pepper sitting in front of you are for?)

I came here for the first ime expecting diner food, however they seemed to be diner + + . I had to read everything on the menu carefully whereas nothing was a standard dish! Everything I saw served to other guests looked great, and my own meal was pretty good. I had as "basic" a dish they had (French Toast) and it was really good! They made it with sourdough bread, and it was really tasty. The staff there is friendly, and they keep the place remarkably clean. I definitely plan to return!

The service was great, menu was interesting and creative and my food was pretty good. Although to be honest, I'm more of a giant Denver omelet and greasy hash brown guy. The menu was a little to fancy for my taste. Although my wife was pleasantly surprised with the creative menu choices and all the fruit and sauce variety.

We had a wonderful breakfast; the service was quick and super friendly. The breakfast was very good but I expect a little more for the price. We loved the raspberry creme on the fresh fruit and the food is presented with a look of pride from the kitchen. The meal was fresh and very tasty. The room was kinda busy so if you like crowds you will like this place. They FINALLY take Visa so that is a nice change. The drinks made the full ticket price go up so I suggest they re-evaluate the coffee/tea prices. Overall pretty nice place to eat.

We had heard great things about this place and my wife and I have been looking for a good breakfast spot since we moved to Livermore. First of all, the restaurant is very difficult to find because it is not on the street; its actually hidden in a shopping center where most of the storefronts are practically boarded up, pretty depressing. There was no wait but the table we were seated at was about 3 feet from the door, I don't usually mind those things but my wife made a good point that there probably should not have been a table in that spot. It was after sitting down that I noticed a sign in the window that they don't accept credit cards, which shocked me. I was given directions to the nearest ATM which was about 200 yards away, very irritating. My wife had a difficult time finding something she wanted to order but then again, when she is irritated about something there is nothing you can do about it. The food was fine. The waitress did bring me the wrong order at first and I didn't get my food until after my wife and son were finished. They put a great yogurt on top of the fresh fruit which made ordering fruit instead of hash browns that much easier. The bacon inside of my omelette was very tough and difficult to cut through. We would definitely give it another try if they accepted credit cards, but since they don't want to come into the 1980's, we probably won't.

I really enjoyed my visit and found that two important things have recently changed. #1 - they now take credit cards (yay!) and #2 - they will seat incomplete groups. And my visit was on a Sunday morning so it wasn't a particularly slow time.

sorry. this is our 2nd visit..thought maybe the first was an anomaly. Nope. Downright rude waitress and hostess. Menu overly foo-foo (it's just breakfast, people). And WAY overpriced! WAY WAY overpriced!!!! We won't be going again.

Good food, reasonably priced, friendly wait-staff and nice atmosphere. Not so noisy that you can't hear your dining companions, and the variety of things on the menu is wonderful. Would recommend this place for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Railroad cafe is such a cute place to eat breakfast at, since it has that old diner feel to it. They have creative dishes, and my favorites are the swedish pancakes, the sweet sampler that I forgot the name of, and there potato pancakes with scrambled eggs. They always have cobblers and desserts you can have and have lunch past a certain time, but serve breakfast all day. They only take cash, so remember to go to the ATM before you eat!

Five us us just left after eating here for the first and last time, ever. We got in right at 11:00, when you can order from the breakfast or the lunch menu. We ordered 3 breakfasts, a burger and a sandwich. There's a big clock on the wall over the kitchen, so I could watch the minutes tick away. It our food took a half hour to come out. The place was not that full. Neither was my coffee and neither was anyone's water. I could see the waitress just standing around near the cash register. She wasn't busy at all. My wife had to give her a hand signal that her coffee was empty - that was in exasperation after waiting way too long in the hopes that she would just do her job without being asked. When she finally did amble over, I asked how much longer the food would take. She explained that "those big 10 oz burgers take a while to cook". Really? They can't cook a hamburger in half an hour? That's about twice as long as it takes me, I make bigger patties, and mine don't come out that greasy either. Give me a break. One of my daughters ordered the ham and pork panini sandwich. She doesn't like mustard, and hadn't realized that this sandwich would have mustard on it. I suggested she just scrape it off, but she said there was too much slathered on. I thought she was just being picky until I picked up one of the pieces of bread to use with some egg I had running on my plate. It had so much mustard it had actually become soggy. It was gross, and I really do like mustard (at least as a condiment!). Of the five of us, I think I wound up with the best dish - what they call a "Basque Pork Chop and Egg Benedict" on the menu. I have to say that was pretty good, although the "tomato gravy" they use instead of Hollandaise was way too sweet so clashed with everything else. The other two breakfasts were nothing special; about what you'd expect at a Denny's or IHOP. One of the other reviewers suggested Dean's or Country Waffles. I agree, they're both better. I had planned to leave a very small tip, since the service was SO bad. When I got the check, I started to do some quick math in my head, then I looked a little closer and realized they had already added an 18% gratuity to the check. Are you kidding me? In a little breakfast diner? For a party of 5? Forget that. Never going back.

Maybe it's my fault, or maybe it's theirs but I can simply not learn to like this place. The food is bland to me, the portions are a good size. I've only ever been here twice and both times on Sunday morning so that might be my first downfall. My first time I tried an omelet which was mediocre. My biggest gripe NO HASH BROWNS! How can you serve breakfast and not have hash browns? The second time I went in there was a big crowd outside as usual, but the hostess let me sit at the counter. I had the biscuits and gravy, with a side of potatoes. The gravy was different and not necessarily bad, but the biscuits were horrible, it tasted like there was too much flower that just didn't get mixed properly. The potatoes are over seasoned because they are too bland for human consumption otherwise. I plan to skip the Railroad Cafe from here on out. *Walks away grumbling "No Stinking Hash Browns"*

I love, love, love breakfast at the Railroad Cafe. The food is high quality, consistent, and delicious. I get the same thing every time (Swedish pancakes with banana, strawberries, and melba sauce) and am never disappointed. Even though I never stray from the familiar, I've never been here with anyone who didn't enjoy what they ordered. There are a few cons about this place, but, ultimately, the amazing food keeps me coming back. One con is that they have a super-annoying policy of not seating you until your whole party is there. No getting a head start on beverages or even ordering ahead for someone who is running late. You may find yourself stuck with a large party in their tiny waiting area as you stare longingly at available tables. Another con (and I realize that for some people, this will be a deal breaker) is that some of the employees can be a bit snotty. There are a few servers who are super friendly and accommodating, but the hostesses, in particular, can be curt and unfriendly. We could be wrong, but my husband and I suspect that one of the offending "hostesses" is actually an owner, which makes the snottiness especially bad. If their food wasn't so good, the curtness would be enough for me to not return, but, in my opinion, this is the best place to have breakfast in Livermore. I would give them 5 stars if their policies were more customer friendly and there was a bit less 'tude from some of the employees/owners(?). A friendly face and warm personality go a long way in greeting patrons and would do wonders for making a better first (and second, and third...) impression. Some previous reviews mention the cash-only policy, which, since they added dinner service, has finally been revoked. Thank God.

sure they are always busy and you will usually wait for a table but this place really hasn't done it for me. the menu is quite creative i'll give them that but once you actually try something you'll be pretty disappointed. the service is just ok! i have never been wowed with friendly outgoing service but just the waitress greeting tables and running food. i have read so much about this fantastic burger and i had to try it and i was sooo very disappointed. size of the burger was big but the quality of the meat tasted bad and was very chewy and rubbery. the bun was very soft but fell apart on me with each bite. i was a mess after eating this i had to ask for alot of napkins. the fries were bland and soggy with no flavor at all and the cheese on my burger was shredded and melted off the burger. i have just overall not been satisfied with the food here as many things are very bland and don't go well together at all. and the home style gravy is terrible. no flavor at all. with so many other choices for breakfast out there i'm sure i have seen the last of my visits to the railroad cafe. head on out to castro valley as they have SOME OF MY FAVORITE places in the bay area!

Nothing is better than a hugh breakfast after along night out. The food was great, and the sevice was wonderful. a very homey fill. The Swetish pancakes were amazing. My boyfriend had a slice of the cinnamon toast and it was fabulous. Next time I'll make sure I get some of that.

This place is wonderful- many varieties of pancakes (normal, potato, lemon, & Swedish) and other interesting menu items which other reviewers have already mentioned. My favorite is the Swedish pancakes. Overall, it is great food at great prices. My family of 3 can eat there for about $25. NOTE- They are moving to a new location Feb 2009- there is a shopping center with a Nobhill (old location of Gianna's) which is where they will be. it is supposed to be bigger so that is a huge plus! UPDATE- I visited the new location. Size wise it might be bigger than the old location, but it doesn't have that many more tables- so don't expect a huge improvement in wait time. It's also in a more noticeable location so I think it is getting more traffic than at the old location. I also noticed that they have some new staff who I'm not so happy with (their demeanor and attentiveness). When I was there, they started turning people away at 1:30PM. The sign says they're open til 2 PM! I can understand turning people away at 1:45 PM maybe but I think it's rude to do that to people 30 minutes before closing. I think the owner should remember that word of mouth helped make this place so successful and it can also be it's downfall- especially when they treat people like that. I for one thought it was very unfair to do- and I also thought they should have offered those folks the option to order to go (not once did they say that). So based on the most recent experience I am downgrading them two stars. If you go on a weekend- make sure to get there by 1 PM or they might refuse service to you because they're too busy.

A local institution (few in Livermore) that has a great chef who consistently challenges their own menu. First, the menu changes every 6 months or so. Their breakfasts are to die for. Best breakfast in Livermore! Their sausages are homemade. Their eggs dishes are hearty and delish! Their custard and yogurt combos are wonderful. Vegetarians have plenty of options. Meat lovers will be sated. Come and be happy!

Ugh ...no me gusta! Came here with fiance and kids for breakfast since we were in the area. Unfortunately I was extremely disappointed. Fiance eats here during the week from time to time and said the regular eggs/toast is good. We had a bunch of their basics.. Eggs, potatoes, waffles, ham, toast and biscuit/gravy. Unfortunately out of all of that maybe two things were decent. The potatoes were gross way too much rosemary, but bland otherwise. The gravy tasted like clam chowder with some sort of spicy chili flavor. GROSS! I will say their ham is quite tasty as is there coffee. Service is spotty. Not sure how they could forget my 4 year old's plate of ONE egg and toast, then wait till all of our food was cold and bring it. (I make the kids wait till EVERYONE is served before they can dig in.) Oh and the bathroom situation is HORRENDOUS. ONE F*CKING bathroom for a full restaurant. At any given time there were a good 5-7 people lined up. Ugh railroad cafe you can take your uber fancy menu and not so fancy tasting meals and shove em in your single bathroom. ...Final verdict- 1.5 stars **I forgot to add the kids cups are tiny as hell, totally funny they basically give you a 'shot' of oj or milk. I know dairy prices are on the rise, but can we increase the size of the cups to accommodate 'two shots'? maybe? ...

Used to go here and absolutely LOVED the Swedish pancakes. Went there this morning dreaming of how good they were going to be and I got a plateful of dry Swedish cakes with a teaspoon of powdered sugar and no frult or fruit sauce like they used to have. Instead I had a cup full of strawberries on the side with a teaspoonful of what seemed to be strawberry yogurt. When I asked the waitress what happened she said they changed the pancakes. I told her I thought that was a bad decision. I will not be back. Omelette that my son got was just a pancake of egg with a bunch of raw vegetables thrown on the top and then folded over. Did the place change hands or what? Not a pleasant experience.

RRC has a 1970's diner look and feel to it. I had the lamb sandwich and it was superb! The lamb was moist and tender, the portobello mushrooms were tasty, and the bread was perfect. It came with a side salad that was dressed nicely and even had strawberries in it! Freaking cash-only spot so caveat emptor! But for a cafe in a strip mall, I was thoroughly impressed! Auf.

Love this place, a Livermore institution. Sadly the building it is in seems to have missed the boat on the downtown revitalization and while the cafe itself is clean and bright inside, the rest of the strip mall is deserted and slowly falling down around them. I really hope something is done with this area because it gets more and more blighted every time I go there and it's more conspicuous the more they fix up everything around it. That's no fault of the Railroad Cafe however. The atmosphere of this place is a classic small town diner. I usually come in on a weekday (they are packed on weekends) and sit at the counter. Drinking black coffee from a white cup and reading the Independent (copies of which are available at the door), and chatting with waitresses that look like my grandma, it feels just like a diner in the Montana ranching town I grew up in. The food however, is a lot different. Very creative menu with a lot of different options. I usually have breakfast, but I have been happy with the lunch entrees I have tried as well. My favorite is the eggs Benedict in puff pastry. It's a tower of goodness. I always order it with the swiss sausage, which they have ship in from a specialty dealer in Monterey. It is outstanding. A few months ago they added an artichoke heart to the stack and it really compliments the hollandaise sauce I think. It is a bit complicated if you're looking for a simple eggs Benedict, but the flavors are great. I've eaten this half a dozen times and always left happy. It comes with a custard with strawberries and bananas and some raspberry yogurt sauce over the top. It is delicious if a little dessert-like for breakfast. Another standout are the swiss sausage crepes (can you tell I like the swiss sausage?). Two crepes wrapped around some delicious white creamy sauce with swiss sausage on either side of scrambled eggs with spinach and vegetables. My only complaint was that the eggs were a bit under seasoned, but the crepe filling was to die for. The bananas foster waffle was tasty but again a bit dessert-like. Then again, you ordered a waffle with bananas foster on it so what did you expect? There's no better place in Livermore to have breakfast. They don't take credit cards, so be ready for that.

C'mon ride the train, hey ride it woo woo! youtube.com/watch?v=U9vZ… I can smell them breakfast breezes from a mile away, Graduated from breakfast, I can eat brunch all day. Special dishes you looking tough to death, got the eggs done right, My belt is on too tight, food is looking out of sight, yeah yeah. Right about now it's about that time for me to holler, The prices won't break your walla so you can stay a balla. Woo, don't need no tickets for this thing Just jump on in, let the servers hit them switches on the train. Out of all the places to eat breakfast/brunch in the Tri-Valley area, this is my favorite spot. Their dishes are creative and servings plentiful. From a revised version of eggs benedict (they make it sweet), to swiss crepes, to country-style breakfasts, and to spanish scrambles on top of potato pancakes, this place is one of my favorites. By no means is it fancy, but it sure is homey. Most people that have never dined here before will have trouble finding it because its in a strip mall/plaza. Just drive in to the plaza and you'll see it near the entrance.

I have been looking for a local spot that serves up a great eggs benedict. Well, let's just say that my experience could have been better (to put it kindly). They offered 2 versions: # 1 was "Basque-themed" with spinach, garlic and a tomato-based sauce; # 2 was seasonal - pumpkin polenta instead of English muffins and a pumpkin creme sauce. All I wanted was the standard eggs benedict, which the waitress (with the phlegm-y cough / laugh and overdose of "perfume") obliged. Breakfast arrived, the hollandaise sauce was COLD and the diced red potatoes were literally flavorless. I will not be going back.

Great place for kids again becuase its your typical noisy cafe. Great service and the Eggs Benedict is served a bit differently and I loved it. Expect to wait on the weekends for a table for at least 15 minutes. Its worth the wait though.

I *heart* breakfast food! I had the lemon-ricotta silver dollar pancakes and a side of bacon. The pancakes were delish! They were light, airy & perfectly portioned for someone with my appetite - which isn't much. ; ) Were the place not so dang far I'd go to the Railroad Café on a regular basis. If I'm ever out in Livermore in the AM for gawd knows why, I'm making a pit stop to try their other breakfast items.

Had breakfast before golfing at Wente Vineyards. Had the eggs benedict with portabello mushrooms instead of English muffins topped with puff pastry accompanied with a fruit custard and berry puree. One friend had the potato pancakes with eggs and breakfast sausages. Everyone enjoyed what they had. A nice change from the standard bacon and egg greasy spoons. Will return when in the area which is not too often though. Saw on another review that the Swedish pancakes are good too. Service was prompt, courteous and friendly.

I go about once a week when I am craving a Cobb Salad. Comes with great pumpkin bread with a lemon spread. Never had to wait, though I usually get there about 1 after the lunch rush. I've had several servers and all have been friendly. I took a relative recently who just wanted a small (water glass size) iced tea and they didn't even charge her. Plates on other tables look good - I think I am next up for meat loaf some day when I tire of the Cobb Salad. Generous portions, prices are fine and I pay with my ATM card (Visa).

not sure where to begin with my review...anyway i came yesterday around 1 and we had to waited 20-30 mins for 2 ppl to be seated. the first thing that the server normally asks you is what you want to drink. so my friend and i wanted hot chocolate, but prior to actually ordering it my friend asked if there were any refills, and the old lady server said NO! are you freaking serious no refills for hot chocolate?! the cup was the average cup you would get at dennys or ihop. we still ordered hot coco anyway. MENU & FOOD: the menu is weird. I mean they had a lot of selections but i felt like you had to pay for every little single extra or additions you want. ex. if you want pancakes, all you're going to get is pancakes. NO EGGS NO SAUSAGE NO BACON. I ordered the combo: 2 french toasts, 2 eggs, 2 sausages. I think that alone was 10+. I must admit that the food taste good, but a little pricey and that portions are not even big to make you full. My friend ordered the rocky something breakfast. If they are going to charge their customers that much, they should give more on the place considering the fact that it is Livermore and not SF. ALSO, the service is slow...not sure if its because the servers are a little older.... I didn't pay but our bill for $25+$4tip If they had given us more food, i would have give then additional 2 stars

Railroad Cafe replaced Gianna's in a pretty awful location behind a gas station and Carl's Jr. But do not let the sketch location fool you! Railroad Cafe has some of the best breakfast in Livermore in my opinion, and I am the queen of the hunt for best breakfast (especially for those hungover weekend mornings). Came here on a busy Friday mid-morning with a large group of 8 hungry girls. We had to wait a bit for our table but with a large group thats expected. I looked at the menu and was overwhelmed with options. I seriously cannot wait to go back and try everything. I ate a little bit of everyone's meal and loved it all. The best part was this delicious toast with cinnamon sugar butter on it or something. Yummy. I could just eat that! Our service was excellent, which is sometimes rare for such large parties. She was very accommodating and attentive, and made it clear the tip was already included in the bill (some servers won't tell you hoping to get tipped extra!)

Been to the cafe several times since my last review and I must update to increase the stars to five. The breakfast offerings are so eclectic and varied that we normally order one savory entree and one sweet offering and share. Try the unusual new breakfast offerings (think they changed the menu about a month ago now). Some of them sound really odd, but they are so yummy. They continue to be accommodating, friendly and put out quality food. Yumm.

would've been nice if we were asked how our overpriced meal was. going to put customers outside, make the environment more inviting. not sure if I would return. food too weird to say tasty- vegetable medley good. not cheap- when I come for breakfast, want breakfast, not a medley of mish-mash. did not finish my breakfast, then the server turned to my husband and asked him if he wanted it !!! ??$#@ Talk about weird!

WOW this was the best breakfest in a while¡ My wife loved her food and normally she says it's ok, today she can't stop talking about it. She took pics and put it on FB and made me write a review. My food was great very differant this is a place to come back to Now the service was tidally differant no young kids in tight jeans and tighter shirts but my waitress was like a gma or a mom and most of them were that way so you feel at hone. The service was excellant

You know you've stepped into a local favorite when the waitresses know everyone by name, and the couple next to you doesn't have to pay the bill because another patron "got it this time 'round". I'd heard of the Railroad Cafe through locals. You come in and the first impression is that it's a very vintage - but sparkly clean - place. It's impressive to take a look at a steel kitchen that is so shiny it could be in a teeth whitening commercial (imagine the little sparkle shining on the teeth - that's how clean it is). The counters are a dark turquoise, the little benches have flower patterns, and there's china plates as decorations on the walls. The waitresses call you "honey" and your coffee cup is never empty. That place has *character*. There are comfy, cushy benches instead of hard chairs, even for the 2 person tables. It's got the old diner feel that feels like it's been there for generations. And so you wonder - will I find grandmalicious recipes in there? The answer is yes. The menu is quite surprising in terms of the mix of flavors - they don't just have eggs benedicts, they have eggs benedict their way; the french toast can be had with pumpkin bread; and fresh strawberries are always served with a raspberry cream. I had the swedish pancakes and asked our waitress if I could have it with apricot sauce that I'd seen with another menu item. She said no problem. I also asked for 2 pieces of bacon on the side. OMG the bacon there - if there's an indication of a great breakfast place, it's the bacon. The bacon is long and crispy and oh so delicious. It's cooked to perfection and not too thick and not too greasy. The swedish pancakes were light and sweet. My husband had the combination of pancakes, eggs overeasy and apple sausage links. The eggs were cooked to perfection, the ylks were golden and runny, the sausage links were meaty but not overly salty or dry like at other diners, and the maple syrup was warm and creamy. There was a lot of food and it was served quickly especially given that the place was packed. I would go back anytime! One last good thing to know: they only take cash or personal checks.

This place was surpising because it looked like a dumpy little diner but the food was really good. The menu was very unique because the combinations of foods looked interesting to downright odd. I got the cheese crepes. They were great. It had vanilla and orange zest inside. My friends liked their food too. Waitress was nice. all was good. I want to go again and try other things.

I went here last weekend, weekdays and early morning is best. Always a good meal! I rarely eat my whole plate but I always do here! Swedish pancakes were deelish! And recently I had their Blintzes (again)..amazing! This place always has neat and unique recipes too, a little bit of an older crowd, maybe a little pricey too. This place is moving to where Gianna's was over by Nob Hill soon, fyi. If this place is too busy or pricey for you try L&M just across the way.

I really love this place. I've been enjoying their fantastic food for many years, when they were located down the street and in Pleasanton. Their food is consistently very flavorful and really fresh tasting. Prices went up since they moved but I guess everything has. Another good thing about this place is the service. There are the same women working there that have been for years and years and they are excellent servers. I love taking people here for the first time because they are always so surprised at how great it is.

This place just keeps getting better and better. We had a wonderful Father's Day breakfast and the service was awesome. Only complaint was some lady who was arguing about wanting to be sat at a table. Guess she didn't realize it was Father's Day and they needed to save tables to make bigger parties. She was a rather large woman; probably couldn't fit in a booth.Otherwise, it was perfect...

I would give it 4 stars for breakfast, but I've been disappointed with the items I've had for lunch. Once, the chicken sandwich with artichoke hearts - the chicken was tough and chewy, definitely cheap meat. The next time I tried their Asian pork, which was just nothing to write home about. Each time, the waitstaff raved about the dishes. The salads on the side were good. If I go again, I would go for either a breakfast or salad, those seem to be the best.

I like this place... But they don't accept plastic!!!! ONLY CASH!! It is just one of those breakfast places that take you back to mom and pop shop days.

  • Ali H.

I have been going here for 6 months and I am tired of this place. We have to all be there to be seated, so we have to lie about how many are in our party and ask for our favourite booth until our family gets there. Did I mention we meet at 7 am' ish? Not a busy time what so ever. Sometimes we have to pay extra for the pot. pancake and sometimes we don't. And I appreciate a menu change, but why take off one of my new favourite dishes? It is very confusing and for a family that comes here almost every weekend, I will just stick to my egg white breaky I have the rest of the week. This was my treat and I am over it!

OK, it was time to give Railroad Cafe another chance. Finally went back several times recently with boyfriend, as well as out of town guests. Seating was prompt, coffee cups were refilled regularly, and service was for the most part efficient and friendly. Based on the past few experiences I would rate the breakfast food we've had at 4 stars, but it is just not , and never will be, our old Railroad as far as the ambiance and friendliness . The menu has changed, some favorites are gone, based on what our waitress said was customer preferences, and the new additions have been good. But I agree with another post, that there is a certain rigidity or "uptight vibe" that is uncalled for in a casual, family-friendly restaurant. And although service seems improved, it is not quite at the level of the nearby four-letter breakfast place, where food is not great, but where they earn high marks for consistently good customer service. Yes, we'll be back to Railroad Cafe, with the good and not so good.

New location...same old menu...same old decor. I thought I'd give it another chance when they moved to a new location, but other than the address...nothing changed. Cash only. They even moved the old green laminate counter from the old location. The food is so so. The service was bad. It took us 30 min to get a breakfast...and it wasn't that busy. I'll spend my CASH elsewhere.

  • Kiki G.

Cute, country-type decor. The food is good, but the coffee is just OK. I will definitely bring my folks here once I get settled in my new place. They will love it for breakfast! Large portions and plenty of choices. What's not to like?

    (3)
  • Samantha B.

Eh meh. I know it is a popular place in Livermore but I would rather drive to Pleasanton for better breakfast foods. The food is only okay and not worth the price. Also it is cash only, which actually detours us from going there most of the time.

  • Ilene S.

Since they moved to there new location, I have been disappointed twice. The waitresses were nice but the owner was just rude. First time I went they stopped seating people an hour before they closed. The hostess was polite but didn't see us unloading a wheelchair and taking our friend out of the car only to be turned away. We were parked right in front!!! The second time, I had my toddler who likes to walk around and greet everyone... No other restaurants have ever complained about her. The owner stated she needed to be out of the aisles... It wasn't busy and no one was complaining... Potato pancakes were raw, cold, and no flavor but I did like the fruit with yogurt... I'm done with this place it isn't worth my time - I had to leave early

*****UPDATE 5/14/07 ***** Okay...this is the last time I modify this review! I SWEAR! Came here for lunch with coworkers last Friday and had a bacon cheeseburger. It was delicious and huge! (I think 10oz. before cooking). Only gripe was the juicy burger made the bread fall apart before I was finished. Maybe some mustard or mayo to protect the bottom bun next time? :-) I'm giving Railroad another star back because their service is great. They're very attentive throughout the meal and accommodated our large group without complaint. ***** UPDATE EASTER SUNDAY 2007 - 3 STARS ***** Well, the honeymoon is over. Brought my wife and her sister all the way to Livermore today because I had raved about Railroad Cafe. She ordered the "country breakfast" and thought the biscuit was alright, but the corned beef hash was definitely from a can and the scrambled eggs with spinach, mushrooms and tomatoes were not seasoned at all. It was bland and she was pissed. A big issue my wife had with her food and the menu in general is that there isn't much flexibility in what comes with the dishes, and oftentimes the food seems mismatched. For example, the scrambled eggs that came with her breakfast didn't seem to go with the hash, which didn't go with the biscuits and gravy, and for the most part I agree. She also thought that there are too many menu options and that they need to pare it down and concentrate on making fewer dishes and making them great. Sister in law's Swedish crepe was interesting. She thought the crepe was a bit undercooked, but the filling was interesting...it was like a cream cheese/sausage mixture. She also complained of unseasoned eggs and vegetables, but was not as angry as my wife. Personally, I thought my Eggs Benedict with Puff Pastry was pretty good, but I wasn't ecstatic about it. Now I have to take my wife out for a nice dinner to make up for her shitty breakfast. ***** ORIGINAL REVIEW - 5 STARS - 03/31/2007 ***** Lately, some of my coworkers have gone out of their way to let me pick new places to eat lunch just so I can Yelp them. With such a tremendous responsibility, I feel a bit of pressure to pick places that don't suck. Luckily, Railroad Cafe is one of the truly great places in Livermore. Railroad Cafe is tucked in a shopping center that's basically dead. The only other store that's open next to it is a quilt store, so from the outside it doesn't look like much. But once you get seated and start reading the menu, you realize that this is not your ordinary diner. The menu is very creative, with things like eggs benedict served on puff pastry instead of English muffins (I must try this next time!) and the beef brisket sandwich I ordered, which was served with a chipotle barbecue sauce on a roll with pickles, onions and sweet peppers. Most of us seemed to order off their specials menu, which has all of these interesting concoctions on it. When everyone's food came (there were 9 of us), I seriously wanted to sample EVERYONE'S food. I think everyone raved about what they ordered, and we joked about returning again next week to try some of the other dishes. Service was attentive and fast, and our waitress thought our big group was fun. It's CASH ONLY, so keep that in mind. The first time I went to Railroad Cafe, I wasn't all the impressed. Looking back it's probably because I ordered something really basic, I think a ham and cheese omelette. If you end up at the Railroad Cafe, I definitely recommend you order something "special."

  • J B.

The best thing about Railroad cafe, is that you can not only get the plain old breaky you can get at any Ihop or Denny's, but you can get things that are out of the ordinary, and yet still so wonderful! The first few times I went there, I had the (damn, I cant think of the name...insert name of dried jalapeno)(here), with grilled polenta, 7 bean medley, silchach sausage(by the way, the best breakfast sausage EVER!!!!), eggs that are poached in green Chile salsa, and on the side is the best taco!!! Grilled onion, mascarpone, and cranberry taco....drool! Their potato pancakes are great too, specially when you get the ham one, then have them put the silchacha sausage in it!!! Being a breakfast man myself, I was disappointed when I tried the country fried steak and bisc and gravy. the steak sucked, absolutely no salt, IE flavor, and same with the gravy...no matter how great everything else is, I am a firm believer that the steak and gravy still needs to be good! I never know when I am going to want to go back to the basics!!! Anyways I will recommend, and go back to many times!

Went there yesterday for lunch--food and service were fantastic. I had the shrimp salad stuffed avocado; my mom had the turkey with apricot and mascarpone sandwich. Both were delicious and extremely fresh. We really liked the menu--many unexpected offerings. While the decor is dated and in need of a good scrubbing, it is easily overlooked once you taste the food. Service was attentive and great with my toddler. Our waitress magically appeared with paper and washable pens as soon as we were seated. My daughter enjoyed her grilled PBJ&Banana sandwich, too. Oh, and I can't forget to mention the sinfully delicious pumpkin bread that came with my salad. The slices were more like slabs and had to be shared. My mom and I were making so many "Mmmm" sounds that the group of businessmen seated near us started to stare! We will definitely venture out of P'town and head down Stanley Blvd. again for this gem of a restaurant.

Went this morning for breakfast it found it to be meeehhhhh. Hubby had some sort of chipotle egg plate, kiddo had pumpkin bread with fresh fruit and I had waffles. OJ tasted like it was out of a machine which isn't my cuppa tea. Waffles tasted good but had a too soggy texture in the center. Pumpkin bread was amazing, fruit was good except it has a yogurt sauce on the top which wasn't mentioned on the menu therefore picky kiddo wouldn't touch it. Hubby loved his eggs. I think we'll probably go back and give them another shot. I'll just order something different. :)

Today was the 2nd time we've eaten here. Last time we had breakfast, and this time was lunch. Both meals were absolutely fantastic. This place doesn't look like much from the outside...but you begin to suspect something is up when you note that the place seems always to be packed. I smile each time I look at the menu...such a refreshing change from the usual "Denny's" type fare that you might expect. The food is creative, fresh and delicious. My wife and I sat at the counter today, and every few minutes we were gawking at whatever was coming out of the kitchen. Expect to pay around $10 for a meal here, which is probably a few bucks more than you might pay elsewhere...but for this place it's certainly worth it.

Food here is tasty, but the coffee sucks. Also, they only take cash and checks (!?) so that's a minus for me. The wait can be long too, even in the new bigger location. If it weren't for the coffee and the cash only policy I'd give it 4 stars because the food is consistently good.

I love the eggs benedict (the sweet one is really good with the cookie on the side.) I have been there 3 times in 8 days this week! I took my husband, a girlfriend and 2 other friends for a birthday brunch. I love that you can have a unique breakfast menu even at 2pm. I avoid the wait by going AFTER I exercise around 11am if I can. The Swedish pancakes were light and good today!

1 Star at Best. The employees were helpful and sweet. The food sounded interesting on the menu but was very disappointing. I did not enjoy the Calamari Bacon tacos..I thought it sounds crazy..but it must be good, why else would they put this dish on the menu..it was terrible..so much so that I could not even finish one of the tacos. We won't be going back.

I like the varied menu of savory and sweet. The last time I went I had the French toast with a mango salsa...a bit strange to have cilantro on my French toast. I tried the eggs benedict in puff pastry another time and thought that was a winner. Cute homey decor and friendly staff.

I simply love this restaurant. The Chef's foods always has this wonderful twist, making the usual incredibly unusual. I have never eaten anything at the RR Cafe I didn't like. The Monte Crisco; amazing, the lace cookies with cheese and apricot; brilliant, the egg Benedict with either puff pastry or risotto; fantastic, on and on each dish better than the last. Every time I go my taste buds stand up and cheer. I just wish they would do two things: stay open for dinner and take plastic.

The food definitely makes up for the horrendously crappy serving staff. It's a really nice break from the norm; the menu is unlike anything you've ever seen. I always get the swiss sausage crepes...even when I was a vegetarian, I'd cheat and order them anyway. They're that good. The coffee is amazing, too. It almost has a bit of an apricot flavor to it. YUM. Like I said, the one thing that spoils it for me is the staff. They seriously don't care if you're satisfied with your service, and they act as if they're doing you a favor by allowing you to eat there. I think this is because they're well-established in Livermore, so you, as an individual customer, are really not all that important to them. My friend was visiting from England, and I raved and raved about that place. When I took her there, I asked one of the waitresses how long the wait was, and she kind of sneered at me and said, "What?" I said, "I was wondering how long the wait is," and she snapped, "It's long. Like 30 minutes or something like that." I was totally thrown by her hostile attitude, but I just said, "Okay, thanks," and she said, "Yeah, uh huh," and marched off. My friend was so shocked that her jaw actually dropped. I was so embarrassed, and haven't been back since. I'll probably visit again someday, but that experience was disappointing, to say the least. BUT...the food is wonderful, and the cafe itself is adorable. If they could just get a grip on the grumpy waitstaff, I'd go regularly. However, the women here are in dire need of a good, hard bangfest. Oh, how I miss those crepes...

First of all- WHO TAKES PERSONAL CHECKS ANYMORE? Railroad cafe only accepts cash or personal check?! Ok, so go armed with cash. Have gone to Railroad Cafe several times, each time a pity visit to allow redemption for previous "eh" experiences. Although, each visit has been disappointing, we'll focus on our latest debacle. I ordered 2 eggs (over medium) extra crispy bacon and potatoes- seems easy, right? The mister ordered an omelette- linguisa, mushroom & cheese, extra crispy potatoes and a side of gravy to go with his biscuit. Food came out...EEEK! 2 eggs, barely over easy, raw sliced potatoes- no salt, nothing! Omelette was a round slab of scrambled eggs folded over a pile of linguisa and mushroom...add a sprinkle of cheese. Needless to say, we sent back the potatoes. The waitress brought a plate and asked us to put our potatoes onto the extra plate, she wasn't sure how long it would take to cook them, but she'd bring them back when they were done. REALLY?! They're recycling potatoes? I then told her that I prefer to eat all my hot breakfast together at once, so she could take my eggs and just remove my order from the bill. Done. Mister finished his pile of meat and mushrooms, at about the last bite the potatoes finally came out. I attempted to make the most of it- and satisfy my hunger with my side biscuit. The 'born on' date of said biscuit was at least yesterday! Hard, cold, extra floury flavor....mmmm, biscuits just like grandma cooked them. (eye roll). We then got our bill, only to discover that she had not only removed my breakfast plate but also charged me $2.20 for my coffee. No complimentary coffee for the trouble? Wow. The bill, also had a side of gravy that was $2.75- FOR A HALF CUP OF GRAVY?!? A full order of biscuits and gravy is only $3.50. Doesn't quite add up. No more pity visits from us. This experience more than pushed us over the edge of 'how the heck are they even in business'?

Best breakfast spot in town. Delicious food is what makes this a clear choice for me. Notable mentions: -Great sausage options, swiss is my favorite. -Puff pastry with the eggs benedict. -Pumpkin french toast. -Mimosas (they should consider unlimited mimosas) -Good use of chorizo -Light, fluffy pancakes Free range eggs would earn them a 5th star from me.

Unfortunately some visitors who used to live in Livermore wanted to dine here. My fears were once again justified by truly poor food and truckstop quality service. I don't really like to be called "hun". We were 10 in the party and half were fairly unhappy. I couldn't finish mine and had an appointment so left the group before full complaints could be given. No matter, next time I will kindly refuse any invitations. And there is no way in hell I would go here of my own accord.

Came in for a late-ish lunch (a little after 1). Interior is cute and menu looked yummy. Hubby had a ranch style breakfast which was good. My salad was a big disappointment. I ordered a cobb salad. It was largely lettuce, pea shoots and blue cheese. It was supposed to have olives, bacon, avocado and chicken. There was no bacon, 1 olive and scant avocado and chicken. Service was also very, very slow considering the restaurant was not crowded. Would give it another try, but perhaps it's best to stick to breakfast fare and come a bit earlier in the day?

Knocking off a star after a more recent visit.... Undercooked eggs for everyone in the party and the prices really don't justify inedible anything. Plus, they still only take cash.

Today 6/12/2013 between 12:30 and 1:30 Service was average. Cleanliness was questionable. I saw our waitress cleaning dirty dishes then bringing out food to customers. Not good. I believe it's a health violation not to wash your hands before you serve food again.

Overall, 3.5 solid stars. The food was pretty good. Not the greatest, but solid. The pairings were unique and different than most brunch places, like pumpkin custard and puff pastries on benedicts. Be warned, their menu is extensive! Ordered: 1) Tri tip benedict: 3/5-- I thought the tri tip could've been better seasoned, but aside from that, the dish was well prepared. 2) Swedish pancakes: 3/5 I have had better swedish pancakes. I would skip this dish next time, and probably try their french toast. Service was great and coffee was fairly good. I wouldn't mind coming back if I was in the area.

A very comfortable place with some good food. Even in a very packed restaurant we were managed to be seated no problem. Our server was Linda, who not only shares my grandmothers name, but very much reminded me of my grandmother in both looks and personality. We started with their famous coffee cake, a recommendation from Linda, and it was amazing. The cake was tasty and crumbly, and the two butters it came with (honey butter, and cinnamon butter) were awesome. The cake was big, and for the first time almost EVER, I didn't finish all of something. I ordered their chicken club sandwich. The chicken breast was very big, tender and juicy. It came with bacon, cheese, and avocado. It was very good and a nice stray from my normal burgers. I ordered a side salad that came with crouton discs, and an orange vinaigrette. Very light and yummy, and the orange vinaigrette, even though there was a little too much, was very good. A cute and homey place ran by people who love to do what they do.

Very very good. Comfy and friendly "neighborhood" cafe with a Swedish past. I had the eggs Benedict in puff pastry...this is the way it should be! Sautéed spinach and mushrooms and onions with the egg and hollandaise sauce inside the puff pastry. Yummy! It comes with a side of pumpkin pudding with a berry cream on top and topped with crushed olalaberries. Smooth and delicious. Coffee is excellent but the cups need to be bigger. My fiancé had the cheese blitzes with berries. Excellent. He ate every bite. We also ordered the coffee cake as it was touted as a specialty. It was ok. I wouldn't order it again just because it was ordinary and I can use the calories on something else. Our waitress was nice and attentive. We will definitely come again.

After decades of delicious breakfasts, I finally made it to the Railroad Cafe for dinner! *cue thunderous applause* It was a dark and stormy night and I was in the mood for something comforting. I went with the Asian chicken and shrimp noodle soup and it did not disappoint (unlike my nephew who did not make the honor roll this quarter). The ingredients were fresh and it was just what the doctor ordered (disclaimer: I am not a doctor). My mom ordered a total show stopper of a salad. Such colorful fruit and gigantic shrimp! See the photo...you won't believe your eyes! Unfortunately her dainty tummy forced her to take half of it to go. Sigh. Is it too much to ask to see my mom finish a freaking salad??? But I digress... The restaurant's decor transports you to either another era or just an extremely backwoods area. The servers are reminiscent of your grandma if she were to wait tables and also still be alive today. This is the kind of place that has regulars. Not only do the waitresses know your name, but the cook, too. The cook! He even said goodbye to us and made a joke about the rain. Oh, silly cook. I love you, Railroad! You're so Livermore. Don't ever change.

Absolutely horrible. Went yesterday morning for breakfast. First the lady wouldn't seat us because are whole party wasn't there. She said everyone needs to be here before I seat you because table is set . I told her my daughter's hungry and I'd like to order now she finally let us go to our table. Then just like I said the rest of my party showed up less than a minute later. Ordered onion linguica omelette with avocado. With biscuit and gravy. Food came out I was starving. Biscuits and gravy was ice cold. Not edible. I had them heat it up. When It came back Biscuit was rock hard. So I didn't eat it. Omelette was bad. It just didn't taste good. Potatoes it came with had no flavor. Very disappointing. I will never come back here.

Outstanding service and scrumsh food. I had corned beef hash, which was delish along with their English muffins! Mimosas are yummy too. Can't forget about their homemade coffee cake with cinnamon butter! Ahh! The waitress was super attentive and really knowledgeable of the menu. The only reason why I didn't give 5 stars is because their potatoes had a dirt after taste. Although I still would recommend this place to anyone wanting breakfast food.

A Livermore institution - they serve good old-fashioned breakfast & lunch, in a quaint setting filled with clients and staff who have been with them for years! The breakfast is not inexpensive (specials are over $11 in most cases) but you will get unusual food here - like Swiss sausage crepes which I love! Parking is plentiful and the service friendly but slow - we smartly ordered coffee cake (warm and delicious) to tide us and the girls over while they got our orders ready. They also recently started accepting credit cards, which is welcome, because breakfast for 2 adults and 2 kids will set you back $50 easy.

Love this place and I really enjoy bringing my friends here. I usually go for breakfast and I usually order eggs Benedict, but it's a hit or miss. One day the egg will be over done or the egg will be under done. I may not have that again. But everything does taste very fresh!!

FAIL! Just stopped by for lunch on my honeymoon and my new husband's ulcers was bothering him so he was looking for something soothing. When the waitress came to our table I said that we were looking for soup. When the daily offer was a Mexican soup, we decided to try somewhere else. I was pleased when she recommended Sweet Tomatoes, but when she walked away she said "Or open a can of Campbell's ". Now, I understand that we were leaving without spending any money, after I had dared use there restroom, but that was completely uncalled for. Unfortunate, because their breakfast menu looked tasty. I had considered coming back the following day. Now we won't, that's for sure.

We have eaten dinner there many many many times. Tired of them running out of specials very early in the evening. The owner is very LOUD and bossy to the other waitresses who are TOTALLY fine without her. They only serve dinner 3 times a week so should keep the specials throughout entire evening. Owner very overly attentive and often intrusive to eating customers. Food good, but doubt we will go back.

Don't be fooled by their Grandma style flowery decor. The dishes are off the hook!! I got the Portabella Benedict and my hubby got country style hash and potatoes. Everything was done to perfection. Aaaaaaaamazing!

Best for breakfast and brunch. I've been going here for years. The breakfast is unique and the staff are the sweetest. I recommend their homemade coffee cake. It comes with honey butter and cinnamon butter. The turkey sausage egg white protein breakfast is also great. Their crepes, and waffles are fantastic. This place is family friendly and a true gem in Livermore. The vibe is causal, laid back and welcoming.

The butter on the cinnamon bread was rancid. Bread not toasted (but I could have misunderstood - I was expecting toast). I had a potato pancake (breakfast) topped with an egg & veggies scramble (including onion, mushroom, spinach, tomatoes and supposedly cheese) - it wasn't very good. The potatoes were shredded and I'm sure came out of a frozen food bag - the outside was crunchy but the middle of the potatoes was unpleasantly mushy and starchy. The eggs were so-so: there was a lot of fresh, raw tomato mixed in which gave it a raw, watery texture. I love really good breakfasts. As a note, I cooked professionally (in restaurants) for 11 years, and owned/operated a wholesale bakery for 5 years after that. For 4 years, I was part of team that cooked 300+ breakfasts per day each Saturday/Sunday, so I am rather picky about quality. The folks I went with liked their meals, it a favorite restaurant. I don't think I'd go back. And I don't recommend it.

They're breakfast is great, and there are games and tables to sit at and drink coffee if you end up having to wait for a table on Sunday's when they get busy. Eggs Benedict on puff pastry ftw. Nice place, good food, friendly people. This is one of my go-to breakfast spots.

Amazing food every time. I love that they change their menu so that I try something new each time. I have tried various things and I have loved them all. I try to bring everyone I know here so that they taste the delicious food and have that old dinner experience. Definitely recommend it!

I wish I was more torn about this place. Someone has vision with the menu and specials, but the execution was way way off. We thought we would give it one more shot after finding a breakfast place in Livermore that really does delivery quality (we like to support locally owned small businesses). I had the spinach ravioli benedict. It came out in a pool of unsalted pasta water with a small drizzle of thick Hollandaise sauce over it. The ravioli were freezer burnt and tasteless and everything was just watery. The poached egg was cooked well, but there was zero flavor in the luke warm entire dish. My spouse, who really wanted to come here, had the chicken fried steak with fried eggs and home fries. The steak was cold and completely rubbery (once again seemed to have been in the freezer for God knows how long), he could only stomach two bites of the steak and then gave up. The home fries were cold and not crispy, and once again no flavor not even in the country gravy (very little was served with the steak and it tasted like milk and flour). The front of the house was run absolutely terribly by what seemed to be a disengaged mother and daughter combo. When we got to the counter our server was very pleasant and sweet and the second star is for her stellar service. End point, we paid 37.00 for two tasteless breakfast meals. WAY TOO much money for food that may look pretty good but has zero flavor and questionable quality. I have to say for the prices on the menu, this place should really be ashamed of the quality of their food and fix it.

    (2)
  • Art C.

Two stars is very generous. I wanted to like it but the menu is very unappetizing. In desperation I chose the burger as I thought it would be safer. A patty from Costco grilled at home would have been better. Fries were food service frozen quality.

  • Kathryn L.

Not bad. It's truck stop diner fare trying to be ambitious. All their benedicts sit on puff pastry instead of traditional english muffin. I did the regular eggs benedict with swiss sausage (large house made sausage patty) instead of canadian bacon. The eggs are cooked right and there was this tomato, mushroom, and spinach saute that underlined the eggs; I would have liked a little more hollandaise overall. Bestie did the portobello mushroom benedict. I think i would have enjoyed that more than the swiss sausage because the sausage was a little salty for my palette; that says a lot because I'm filipino...which means I'm mostly composed of salt & MSG. Both dishes were served with what's called "pumpkin custard." It had a school cafeteria jello pudding taste and it's covered in strawberry yogurt with a cranberry relish on top. This is weird to serve with benedict. It would also have suffered less if it wasn't oddly smothered with strawberry yogurt. Service was quick and friendly. I'd be back, but probably order something else.

I wish I could give this place an extra half star, for creativity and their year round pumpkin custard. This restaurant is strange, in a good way. I've been here a few times for breakfast and lunch. The menu is huge and random- Monte Cristos, Basque stye Benedict, and Japanese Ramen noodles...Ok, why not? The decor is outdated country and the service is friendly-ish. Its like a Perko's with some fight left in it. Ran by women all older than 40, the no nonsense demeanor of these ladies is somehow comforting. All day Breakfast. I'd recommend it when you're tired of the same old thing.

This was my boyfriend & i's first time here! We came here for a local vacation & just googled what would be the best breakfast spot in the area. Then came this place! We were greeted immediately when we walked in & sat quickly. We were placed with I believe her name was Rachel, she was absolutely lovely. Extremely attentive & checked on us often. She made the whole experience even more delightful. On top of, the food was great. Felt like home made food your mom or grandma makes for you. It all came out in a timely fashion. I had the pomegranate mimosa which I highly recommend! If I'm ever in the area to come by this place, I'll definitely be back! It wasn't crazy expensive or anything. It was extremely homey. The look, the feel. I felt like I was a regular at this cafe. I highly recommend it!

Everything is delicious here! I come mainly for the Salchicha Sausage plate because it's huge and the flavors are crazy good. They get pretty packed as they are primarily a brunch/breakfast/lunch place but it's well worth it. Ask for Rachel, she is absolutely the best.

Don't waste your money because it was a huge rip-off! Child's breakfast does not even include a pancake on the combo plate. I had to add a pancake for an extra $3.50! Coffee is disgusting. We had a party of 16, whom a lot of us have not seen each other in 10 years. Needless to say, we were talking and still eating fruit, and what not. All of a sudden, the manager came storming into the patio where we were and yelled (no exaggeration)"we have people who want to sit!!!" I have never experienced this before at a restaurant. This is not a dive, the prices are high, so you would think you would have better service. I was appalled!!! If it was the last place on earth, I would not take my business there! ****ZERO STARS****

This used to be my favorite place to go. The food is good but not worth the bad attitudes of the staff. I will never contribute a dime to this establishment again. Used to be the best breakfast in town, but I'm afraid those days have come to an end. But I don't fancy being treated like a burden when I choose to dine out. Between the service, the horrendous raw sewage smell, and flavorless food, this place is now officially off my list.

I've been to the Railroad Cafe three (3) times so far. I really enjoyed it twice. The third time, however, my wife and I were given a little cup of syrup that had a small living cockroach swimming around like it was in a sticky swimming pool. Needless to say, we walked out right away. It's a real shame too as this WAS one of our favorite breakfast places in Livermore. But, we won't be returning.

My wife and I were very impressed with The Railroad Cafe! We are always a bit timid eating at a public restaurants with our two children (3.5 year old and 18mon), but their service was so top notch I could not thank them enough. As I mentioned, the service was fabulous, but the food was delicious too. We are not from the Livermore area, but if we're in the area again I'd love to come back! I highly recommend this establishment, especially if you have children!

My sister took me here for the first time for a late breakfast. It was SO GOOD. I haven't tried anything else other than the breakfast food so I can't say much for anything else. I had the pancakes and they were perfectly cooked and buttery. Such a great flavor. The coffee was good and the bacon was tasty as well, can't really mess that up. The lady who served us was very social and funny. My mom and sister ordered the pumpkin spice french toast (when they had it back in December) to share and they were dying over it. I'm not even a huge fan of pumpkin spice anything and I tried it and it was so yummy. I definitely would love to bring friends here for some yummy breakfast.

Too bad this place sucks.. We had biscuits and gravy = spicyish, but taste was not good Salmon eggs Benedict = very very fishy. Looked pretty but that was seriously the only good thing about it.. Normal eggs Ben = just ok. And on the bad side of ok. Service= did her job with no happiness. Also after warning them about the nasty fish the waitress got more rude (and I was super nice about telling her) and she actually never apologized.. Come on guys please read this and fix things. Livermore needs a good breakfast place..

Just driving home from SF to the OC, and came to Yelp for help to find a diner for breakfast. This place fit the bill, standard Americana menu, all the good stuff that is so bad for you. The place was crowded, a good sign, the staff friendly and attendant, the food was as expected. I start a new diet tomorrow, so this was a last splurge, very happy.

I have eaten there four times in the last month while working on a local project. Overall, they have a decent selection. Their hamburgers are good, but the fries were cold. I do like their spicy ramen noodles, but their tortilla soup is bland. I will continue to go there while I am local...the staff has always been friendly, I expected poor service as I read some nasty reviews about it. They either fixed that problem, or the customers were grumpy.

My first visit to the Railroad Cafe and it was wonderful! I had the Sunday Special, Prime Rib Benedict Breakfast with spinach, mushrooms, and asparagus. It was really good! The service was top notch. Super friendly and quick attentive service. The food came out quickly which I appreciated being on a tight time crunch. I highly recommend it if you are in the Livermore area. Very cute down home country feel. Where everyone knows everyone.

This place serves up consistently great chicken salad (5-stars). The order comes with a tasty pumpkin custard with fruit on top and 2 huge slices of homemade loaf bread. What a treat for a meal! Hubby rates their meatloaf 4-stars. Usually, the huge man-eater meals served at these types of restaurants are bland - not this place, consistently tasty. Definitely on the favorites list.

This place seems to always be spot on. Specials are always amazing and different than what you would normally find in Livermore breakfast cuisine. My only gripe would be the steak in my omelette always seems to be though. Other than that perfect for breakfast!

Went with friends to a local place. Pleasant experience. Terrific waitress. I mean, seriously awesome waitress. Not enough ways to explain how great she was with kids. They brought paper, markers anda strawberry bowl out as soon as we sat down. Busy place. Good food. Great waffles. I had crepes with sausage and spinach scrambled eggs. Really yummy. We had 8 people in our party, food all arrived in time. Husband didn't like his veggie omelet for the price. Our half of the bill was $50 with tip, which was a bit much really. Seemed about $10 more than we were used to. Some of our party ordered lunch so there was a good variety of food to sample. Oh and the pumpkin French toast was awesome.

Great food and for the most part excellent service staff. However, if the owners wife does not like how you look, you will get skipped over. My husband and I have been coming here for 6 years and we consider this our "go to" breakfast spot. We have brought numerous people here over the years and recommend it to all. However, when the owners wife is working the hostess station, we are skipped multiple times for seating. Parties that come in 10 mins after us are seated before us. At first I thought it was a fluke but no.....EVERY SINGLE TIME! She needs to stay home and let her son run the place. She is the dark cloud over a sunshine of a restaurant.

From reading the reviews, I can see that some people are very unhappy with RRC. I LOVE their food. They are a locally family owned restaurant. It's very rare that I get a grumpy waitress, but I try to give them a smile of mine to try to brighten their day. The restaurant went through some changes when the owner passed away. His wife and son run the restaurant now. Being a widow myself, I can understand that things are not always easy. It may be time for her to stay home and let the son run the business, as he is very good at it. I like the variety of their menu and the fact that their fruit and veggies are ALWAYS the best and fresh! If you like patty melts, try their sausage patty melt (not on the menu) - it's what my late husband ALWAYS ordered and loved! I get the blintzes sometimes, or the Eggs with tomatoes and Avocado with the Lox sliders. Really good and generous portions of Lox. Try it with an open mind - the servers are all humans and have good days and bad days, just like the rest of us. Their counter is also a good place to sit, if you can get one of the local regulars out of their seat!

I've been here a few times and it's usually been very good. This time was a terrible experience. First as we were ordering our food, my daughter asked what she could substitute the fruit for. The waitress very rudely answered" well what do you want?" The food took quite a while to get, which is fine as it is a busy place. I ordered a potato pancake with a scramble on top. The potato inside was raw. When she came over I told her it was raw and she said that's how it supposed to be, picked it up with her hand and flipped it over. She took $2 off the bill for it. I felt like she was very rude, has probably been there for many years and maybe doesn't care anymore. Whatever the case I won't be going back there!

My husband and I have been to Railroad Cafe a few times, the food is always good and the service is always bad. They have a huge menu with tons of options and they always get my picky orders correct. You just have to beg the servers to refill your coffee because they just stand around talking. There aren't very many breakfast places in Livermore so that's what keeps this place busy.

This place has been in Livermore a long time serving the best food at a very reasonable price. The breakfast menu is expansive with great flavors and as much as my wife and I like to try new places, we always seem to get right back to the Railroad Cafe every week. I listed the price as a single $ sign since most everything is between a few dollars and $12 and the next level up goes to $30 (only for two people eating a lot). We have been going there for over 30 years and have never had a bad meal.

We went for breakfast, first time for me. Breakfast was really good. All of us enjoyed everything we ordered. I would say they have a crazy menu, but our food was good. We will definitely be back to try other things. BTW, my family ordered two fresh toast combos, the Mexican Omelet and the Ranch breakfast. All very good.

I came here with friends who'd just finished a triathlon, so they were famished and ready to shove buckets of food in their mouths. We were also a big group, dining at prime breakfast time. Unsurprisingly, a table to fit all of us wasn't ready, there was maybe a 20 minute wait, and during that time we could hang out on the back patio where there's kids games and coffee available on a self-serve basis. Once seated, the group devoured piles of food, so it's good that this Cafe serves up hefty portions. There is also a lot to choose from, almost too much to choose from. Indecision gripped my end of the table and I eventually opted for a Monte Cristo with seasonal berries, the friend across from me got a scramble sort of thing, and a side of bacon, and we shared the lot. My Monte Cristo was substantial, and it was new to me to have it piled high with a chunky strawberry compote. It ended up being more like a stack of french toast and gooey fruit, the savory items in the middle got a little lost amongst all the sweet. Still, it was all consumed. As was the bacon (of course) and nearly all the omelet scramble thing that I don't recall eating much of, but I do recall contained a lot of spinach. Our waitress was friendly and threw back enough sass to put the most unruly of our lot in place, which he deserved. The Railroad Cafe seems to be the Madonna Inn of Livermore. Whatever we ordered seemed to include something pink. Pink yogurt of some sort on the blintzes, pink berries and creamy stuff on the Monte Cristo, pink toppings on other dishes. So much pink! Most breakfast dishes were in the $10 range. Throw in a couple mimosas, iced teas, diet cokes, and the meal worked out to about $20/person, with tax and tip already included in the bill because we were a big group. Oof! What a lot of food.

The staff was super friendly and the service was great. I ordered the Tri tip pepperjack cheese egg Benedict and it was pretty good. They give you a lot of tri tip. My dish came with custard which was okay. I didn't like it too much. Other than that it's a good friendly place to eat.
