I've never been disappointed with the tri- tip here. It has actually been successful at jading my opinion of all other tri-tip. The tri-tip is always moist and tender with a beautiful smokiness. The garlic is crispy with just the perfect amount if bite.

That was a damn good Tri-Tip sandwich. Easily the best I've had in Fresno. I put them above Watts, and Dog House. The reason they won't get 5 stars from me is the price. It's a little expensive for the size of sandwich. The rice pilaf and garlic bread was on point! I will be probably become a regular here.

Everyone in my party of four really enjoyed this place. We all had something different - tri tip, ribs, pork, and hot links and all of them were great ! I highly recommend Mike's. We'll certainly be back.

After not writing on YELP for 2 years, this place beyond deserves my praises! Oh. My. Goodness. Forget Doghouse Grill. This Tri-Tip sandwich will *Rock* your world. It is the most succulent. most delicious. most mouth-watering. most juicy. most divine. most tasty. most moist. most lush thing I will ever put in my mouth. Period. The key to tri-tip sandwiches is simplicity. You want to be able to taste and enjoy the meat for its numerous flavors. Mike hits that SPOT ON. Mike's hoagie-style bread and garlic butter spread perfectly compliment his amazing meat. Now granted he does offer you BBQ sauce (which is amaze-balls) but you definitely do NOT need it. That's how good this sandwich is. He doesn't need to mask the flavors of his meat with cheese, onions, or bbq sauce like other places. This guy's meat speaks for itself. I can't tell you how difficult it is for me to drive by this place *everyday* and resist the temptation to indulge.

Best BBQ joint in town. Nuf said. Well OK I'll add a few more words. This is the first tri tip sandwich that I didn't have to add bbq sauce to. If you like to add sauce they have picked a good one. Very good balance of flavors. I like that they don't give you some huge bun that overwhelms the sandwich. We also had the pulled pork and that was just as good. They put coleslaw on it and that brings a nice brightness to the meat. Very tender with good smoke flavor. For a side we had the potato salad and thats house made. Fresh and good flavor without that sweet Miracle Whip taste that I don't care for. Will be back.

Oh. My. Goodness. How is it possible that this little 559 area code has so many good places to eat! Mikes is RIDICULOUS. Had the trip-tip...very tender meat and excellent BBQ sauce. The best I've ever had. Better than Dog House (although their sauce is actually a little better, even as sticky as it is), and better than Watts in south Fresno. The garlic bread in all sandwiches is buttered and toasted to perfection, and thin to not overwhelm the sandwich. Kapow! Since I don't live around here, I also ordered a Hot link AND pulled pork sandwich, and split it with my son cause I wouldn't be back for awhile. WHOAH! The spicy link had an excellent sweet sauce to it, and was just spicy enough to make your mouth water, but not make you scream for help. The pulled pork? So tender, with a nice pickled garnishing. I added BBQ to mine, and I was set. I'll be back, and I'll stuff myself here. Can't believe how much I ate. I'd be embarrassed, if this review wasn't being read by a bunch of people that eat a lot as well.

Holy shit! The slogan or catch-phrase of this place is "The best tri-tip sandwich in town" -- and now, I KNOW it. I'm gonna say a couple bold statements right now, statements that you might not like which compares Mike's to other tri-tip sandwiches that are popular and established here in Fresno, so cover your ears (you've been warned): "FUCK The Meat Market's tri-tip sandwich." "FUCK Dog House Grill's tri-tip sandwich." Sorry Fresnans, but take that old mindset that these places are the staples for tri-tip (especially Meat Market) and just turn it on its ass, and tell it to go fuck itself. Mike's Grill is the end-all of this discussion -- period. Now, you may or may not even agree in particular about the places I mentioned above in the first place anyways, but whether you like it or not, these two places above (as of now), are deemed the most "popular" choices here in Fresno for tri-tip -- Meat Market and Dog House Grill. And I love(d) them both. Yes, "love(d)." Now I can simply and easily tell these places to go fuck themselves. I am boldly stating I do not give a FUCK about these places anymore. The long and blind "love affair" i've had with these places as a true Fresnan is OVER, and I do not feel bad one bit, nor any less of a Fresnan for it; these places can suck it. I'm literally screaming this right now guys, this is HOW excited I am about this place. I'm just FINALLY so happy Fresno has a place now that can compete nationally. I'm telling you, this is IT guys. This is 'Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives' worthy, this is 'Man v. Food' worthy, this is 'Anthony Bourdain' worthy -- finally Fresno! Do NOT miss this place; it used to be the tiny locksmith kiosk that was RIGHT next to the entrance located on the east side of Cedar (on the side where the McDonalds is at). They have a huge grill they are using that is literally visible to all traffic coming up and down Cedar. From what the lady told me, this place has been open since October of 2009. I've actually seen this place a couple times driving by, but figured I would not come here until I actually heard 'talk' of how good it might be. Out of nowhere, my mom randomly mentioned this place the other day. Her, being a fellow foodie, it was then I knew I had to try it! Now finally, onto the food (sorry, I know I can get rather long winded, just excited). To sample, we tried the Jumbo Tri-Tip sandwich (simply more meat than the regular, that's all) and the Pulled Pork Sandwich. As soon as I took a bite from the Tri-tip sandwich here, I instantly envisioned myself screaming 'fuck you" as loud as I could in the Meat Market and Dog House Grill's parking lots. Especially the retarded and moronically small parking lot at Dog House, wtf huh? Listen guys, I don't want to sound too exaggerative, it's not like you're gonna faint and orgasm once you take a first bite of the tri-tip here, but in all seriousness -- it's just simply better than any tri-tip i've ever had. It's not overly salty, which is a key as most tri-tip tends to be. The sandwich itself is nothing but the meat piled-on the bread with a side of barbecue sauce, which is ALSO great, not overly SWEET like Dog House's sauce. You may like the sweetness of Dog House's, or you may not -- but it's just the RIGHT balance here at Mike's. The pulled pork sandwich was also VERY good, with a vinegary, crunchy cole slaw on top, as well with a side of the house barbecue sauce. Even some herbs are visible in the pork, which is very reminiscent to another legendary pulled pork sandwich I had in New York called "Porchetta." This was just as good, maybe better than this classic spot. One thing that you'll also notice is that they toast the bread just RIGHT, which is a sesame roll that is just perfect. I've never seen a sesame roll used for BBQ, but it works. All of these small details combine to make such a superior sandwich then the crap at Meat Market's and even Dog House, which I have to say I thought WAS a very well done, meaty tri-tip sandwich -- and it still is guys, but Mike's -- is just that much better. Let me say this actually, If you like Dog House's tri-tip sandwich, you'll without a doubt LOVE Mike's. It tastes like a better, perfected version of Dog House's to be truthfully honest. The people here also are very, very nice and helpful. I want to think it's a family or couple that mainly runs this place. In conclusion: I can't wait to tell people about this place. Mark my words, this place is slowly going to catch fire and everyone will confirm that YES, this is "The best tri-tip sandwich in town." And sorry for the language of this review, but that's how excited I am that Fresno has a place like this.

So i finally tried this place. i ordered the tri tip sandwich and shared a frito boat with the bf. The first bite was sooooo amazingly good. The meat was extremely flavorful compared to dog house grill for sure. and the slices are a lot thinner, and super moist and delicious. I really loved the bread. They actually put a lot of garlic butter spread on it which i have no complaints other than it would make the bread go soggy faster. Their bbq sauce was really good too. It def. has more of a kick to it than dog house grills (which i love their bbq sauce too). Their frito boat was okay. my bf really liked the chili, but i felt it was a little on the salty side. With the tri tip sandwich on top of that I almost went into a sodium overload. And i thought the frito boat was a little expensive (but i bought it anyways I KNOW!) but none the less everything was super delicious and will def. be coming back.

Awesome tritip sandwiches, delicious ribs. Fast and friendly service. Best BBQ in NE Fresno.

Fast and simple tri tip on a good roll! The tri tip had so much flavor I never touched the bbq sauce! Chilli beans were bomb, hot as hell! I will return for sure! Its a cut to the chase order and get your food no hassle experience and thats great because its not always easy to get a great meal in 10 minutes when your in a pinch for time. Mikes will get it out to you quick!

So I've been a huge fan of Doghouse since it opened up. Didn't feel like making that drive today, and saw the reviews for Mike's Grill. Well, I had to try it. Amazing. The tri-tip was juicy, flavorful, and oh so tender. The bread was toasted and I think had some garlic buttery taste to it. The BBQ sauce was pretty good too. A little sweet, but with a nice kick. Although, I had half the sandwich without, so that I could truly savor the meat unadulterated :) There jumbo might seem a bit smaller compared to other BBQ sandwiches around, but the mild smoke flavor of the meat, and it's tenderness, makes me want to come back again for dinner!

4.5 stars overall 5 stars for the tri-tip sandwich. Definitely get the tri-tip sandwich if you haven't had it here! It's outstanding in it's simplest form...just lean, thinly sliced, perfectly seasoned and properly smoked, tender tri-tip on a herb buttered sesame roll. Definitely ask for the sauce on the side because you probably won't want to use it. If you do, you'll at least be able to control the amount. The sauce is well- balanced, but I think it can distract from the natural, smoky flavor of the meat if over-applied. They offer several sides that you typically find at BBQ joints- chili, potato salad, etc. I tried the chili, which simply consisted of pinto beans, finely ground meat and seasonings. It was definitely good, but I tend to prefer a more rustic chili with large chucks of meat , visible onions and different types of beans. Mike (the owner) explained that the chili without the beans was originally intended for topping dogs. In that case, it finely ground meat works perfectly as the chili needs to be somewhat pasty to stick to the dog and the bun. I also tried the pulled pork sandwich, which the owner admitted was still a work-in-progress. My complaint was not with the slaw, sauce, or bun, which is the same one used for the tri-tip, but in the pork itself. The consistency of the pork was so tender and moist it was bordering on mushy. The dry rub and outer crust were absent in this sandwich. Mike, who is a super nice and humble guy BTW, had no hesitation in soliciting my honest opinion and agreed with my take on the pork. Considering he's relatively new to BBQ and is still refining his menu and product, I'd say he's off to an excellent start. I highly recommend giving this place a try if you're a meat eater, especially a tri-tip fan.

Very good tri-tip I would recommend this over dog house and I consider dog house to be pretty decent tri-tip. The seating is outside and the Fresno heat can be unbearable to some if that is case get it to go. Their ribs are also very good as a matter of fact I have not had anything yet I would not eat again.

  • Kelly F.

Flavor wise, this place just edges out dog house grill for best tri tip in Fresno. Do to the outside seating and getting less meat for the price I like dog house but if you like the grab and go and great flavor this is a great place to try.

All of the food that my family, friends and I have tried at Mike's Grill has been simply wonderful. We have done weekly food runs at work just because it is so good. Lets put it this way any place that can get a teenager off Xbox 360 just to get to Mike's Grill for the food is awesome. My teenager was out the door before I could grab my purse. Tri-tip the best hands down. No other place offers tri-tip this good. Sauce or no sauce well that depends if you like sauce. Pulled pork sandwich is unbelievable, so wonderful. Pulled pork can be ordered with the slaw on the side. Hot links are smoky goodness. Oh, and the sides are great. Chili is perfect. Have to say that I miss the mac salad and the potato salad they reminded me of summer cook outs when I was young. All of this time going to Mike's Grill I haven't tried the ribs...always in a hurry but one day I will try the ribs that made it to the regular menu. Yes, when they first started ribs were a special not a regular on the menu.

Tried Mike's Grill today and was impressed. I like the concept very much. It is an old photo, or coffee, booth at the very south end of the shopping center on the SE corner of Cedar & Herndon. Mike has a big smoker trailer in the parking lot outside of the booth. He smokes his meat using a combination of apple and almond wood, then carries the meat into the booth where they take orders and prepare the food. Seating is alongside the booth on bar height counters and stools, or in a couple of parking places out back on plastic tables and fold-up chairs. I liked the ambiance very much. Mike's is known for their tri-tip sandwiches. I probably should have had one - it might have taken the review to 5 stars - but, being the contrarian I am, I went for the other items. My friend had the pulled pork sandwich combo and I had the pork baby-back ribs combo. The missing star, for now, is based on definitional differences, maybe. For instance, while the pulled pork sandwich was excellent, it seemed like it was more sliced, than pulled, I prefer pulled. The bread was excellent, and the potato salad was good - though I would like a bit more vinegar. I wanted to try the ribs. I prefer full pork ribs over baby-back ribs, but I didn't have that option. There sauce is sweet, I prefer mine a tad more tangy, and with a bit of a chili pepper burn, but that.s me. The meet was tender with a nice smoke ring. My faults, and these are purely based on my preferences, lean toward the rib meat. I like a rib that is done completely on a grill/smoker, and with a spicy dry rub applied first, followed by regular basting with a tangy mop sauce, and finished with a barbecue sauce. These seemed to be boiled first - not unusual, to save cooking time, then smoked with just a barbecue sauce applied. Very good, but not 5 star, IMHO. Your mileage may vary. My sides were chili beans - nice flavor to the chili, but nothing special, and the garlic toast, which is phenomenal. I would love to open a shop to compete with Mike - friendly competition mind you - but am poor and don't have a location. So, if I'm not doing my own grilling, I'll go to Mike's - it is a top notch second choice for me. Next time - maybe tomorrow - the tri-tip sandwich.

Like others I have been driving by this place for years and I finally gave it a go. I had the tri tip with chili and I was not disappointed. It was absolutely delicious. Meat was tender, BBQ sauce is amazing. Most definitely looking forward to trying other items off the menu.

When I came to California I knew I needed to eat a tri-tip sandwich. This place had the highest review and I soon realize for a good reason! The meat was melt in your mouth tender and I am still salivating about it. This place is a must eat.

The first time we went to search out Mikes Grill we pulled up just as he was closing up. Instead of just sending us away he came out shook our hands, asked our names, and talked to us for a few minutes. SO NICE! You dont see owners doing that everyday! The second time we went we were sure to get there with time to spare and Mike did not disappoint! I had the tri-tip sandwich which as stated in other reviews really does beat all of the other tri tip I've had in town thus far. It was Marvelous!!! The meat was super tender, and the flavor was man oh man so amazing! It doesn't need sauce, but I had to try the bbq and it was equally as good! No inside seating, as it's just an old key kiosk but the food is worth it!

WOW! This place delivers. Found this place on google and have to say this is one of the BEST tri-tip sandwiches I've ever ate! Stopped by from SD area and will be back for sure next time we drive through! Better than the Harris Ranch Tri Tip. Service was so nice and friendly. Potato salad was definately homemade. Roll was buttery and toasted to perfection. Great local atmoshpere.

I really wanted to love this place like everyone else seemed to love it. But no, that did not happen for me. The regular tri-tip sandwich seemed lacking in meat for the price. So if you like a good portion (as far as I am concerned the right portion) of meat you will want to double the meat. The tri-tip itself had a nice flavor and was good. What I didn't like is that the only condiment they have is BBQ sauce. I absolutely love tri-tip, it would be something I would order for my last meal. Personally I do not feel the need to put BBQ sauce on my meat to enjoy it. Don't get me wrong they have a good BBQ sauce and this is the only tri-tip that I do put sauce on but that is mainly because the sandwich is way too dry without it. As for the pulled pork it was way to mushy and did not work well with the coleslaw. The sides were not impressive. But that is just my opinion, if you love BBQ sauce on your tri-tip you will probably love Mike's so give it a try for yourself.

  • Evan S.

This is not the best BBQ I have ever had but it was in the top 5 and for the price it's pretty hard to beat. I had the hot link and it was delicious. I got the pilaf as my side and that was a bit flavorless I don't know how the other sides taste but I was very happy with my meal. Really good homemade BBQ sauce too!

Real good. Favorite bbq north of herdon.

Better than most places. Great if you're looking for high quality tri tip. i like the consistency of the meat, the bread, sometimes a bit too burnt/crunchy.

Great food with fast and friendly service! The tri tip was great and so was the chili. Well be coming back here a lot!

  • Laura M.

Mike's Grill has the best Tri-tip Sandwhich! A friend and I went on a tri-tip sandwhich rampage for a couple month period and deemed this the best tri-tip sandwhich compared to Dog House Grill, Watt's Family Grill, Cosmopolitan Deli-Grill, Rudy Jr's Chicken Man, BJ's Brewhouse, and Sequoia Brewing. I eat there about once a week and get the Tri-tip combo with the rice pilaf. The rice pilaf is pretty f-ing fabulous as well. What's great about the tri-tip sandwhich is that the tri tip is thinly cut, not chewy, and the bread is toasted with garlic and not soggy. The BBQ sauce is delicious and the people working there including Milke are very friendly.

Hands down, one of the best spots to eat at in town.

  • Pedro F.

the tri tip sandwich is spectacular!! definitely one of the best in town the hot link sandwich is pretty good too the sides, ribs and all isn't much to rave about but who cares? everyone knows when you go to mikes grill, you're going for the tri tip!!! one thing i haven't tried yet is the pulled pork sandwich, so im going to have to try that some time definitely the place to go for some good tri tip

  • Jessica G.

I will admit the tri tip sandwich was good. It is the customer service I have a problem with. When Mike, the owner, is there, the service is perfect. Unfortunately when Mike is not there, it is ran by some 20 year old LAZY boys. It took them over 8 minutes to get our drinks out to us when we were the only customers there. There were Two guys working, one with a black long ponytail and the another with light brown hair. They talked and goofed around more than they wanted to work. While we were sitting down eating, we saw two older ladies order and sit down. The guy with the the light colored hair dropped off their drinks. The older lady asked, "where are the straws?" The guy said "its over there" and pointed to the area where you.place your order at. He turned and walked away. The ladies looked in awe and said something to each other as the guy walked back and goofed around some more.. As a paid employee, and as a gentleman, the guy should have walked over to get the straws for the ladies.

Good but not worth the price. Honestly I was shocked by the price. The Meat Market is just as good and a much better deal.

  • Fred M.

The Tri tip was great and the bbq sauce was really great. Now that I have been to booth doghouse grill and Mike's grill. I would have to say that Mikes tri tip is the best. What Mike's misses on is a place to sit (inside) and enjoy the sandwhich. They have table and chairs outside but these days it's too cold when the sun goes down. The ribs were meaty and tastey but they didn't fall of the bone. I'm definately going back especially for the tri tip!

  • Va M.

Best tri tip sandwich! It's the perfect combination of flavors. The garlic bread is thin so u can taste the delicious meat. Great BBQ sauce and great smoked flavors. I have to say it, it's better than dog house... way better

  • Randy G.

I've never had a tritip sandwich as good as this one. I go here once or twice a month. The owner is super friendly and always remembers me and my husband. Go here and get the tri tip. You WILL love it.

My wife and I are from Chicago. We recently visited CA and made it a point to stop at Mike's Grill in Fresno due to the buzz around it online (Yelp). We've tasted some great beef sandwiches and italian beef. I've never tasted anything like Mike's Tri-tip sandwich. The bread that the beef was served on was superb, and the tri-tip seriously blew my mind! Don't let the humble exterior of the building fool you...This place is for real! Also, Mike is a fantastic owner! He has created something special in Fresno. My best wishes to him, his family and his exceptional business!!!

  • Marc H.

Best Tri-Tip sandwch to date. Moist and tender meat, Excellent Sauce, the bread was nicely toasted and crispy. Would like them to add grilled veg or something to complement the sandwich but all in all a great sandwich.

Mike's grill ROCKS! I am a big fan of Texas BBQ, and this is the closest you're going to come with Tri Tip. Delicious, very friendly and reasonably priced. His chili beans are the best I've had anywhere!

Very good tri-tip, not sure if its as tender as Dog house. The pulled pork was outstanding, the slaw on top made the sandwich.

  • Bossy C.

Pretty dang good! I just had the Tri-Tip sandwich. Really moist and tender meat. Very flavorful. Now that I think about it, it was probably the most moist and tender tri-tip sandwich I have ever had. The sesame seed roll is lightly toasted and buttered and the meat has a nice, rich smokey flavor. The sides we chose, as part of the combo, were the rice pilaf and the chill beans. Both were solid choices, but here it is all about the meat. I am sure you won't be disappointed.

  • Lin L.

First time here. Definitely impressed. Had the tri tip sandwich and baby back ribs. Food: excellent! Tri tip was tender , juicy, very flavorful (bordering on salty) but when BBQ sauce was added, the sweetness and acid balanced the savory flavors nicely. Toasted garlic bread gave nice texture to sandwich to contrast tenderness of meat. Ribs: tender, moist, good smoky flavor. Best I've had in Fresno. Service: prompt, friendly Didn't try any sides at this visit but will definitely be back. Would like to see brisket on the menu at some point. If they can make a brisket to match the ribs they will earn the fifth star.

after reading the reviews and post about the best tri tip in fresno, i decided to go try it out today. i was a bit surprised to see it how it looked like a shack, i thought it was just gonna be a very small place in a complex building. so yes, either you take it to go or eat it outdoors on the tables outside. my bf and i got the tri tip sandwich combo and hot link sandwich, which were both very delicious. the tri tip was pretty damn good. why? because it was good by itself and with the bbq sauce added. when i eat the tri tip sandwich at dog house, i always gotta add sauce cause it just tastes too plain without it. and mike's sauce is pretty good as well. the owner was real nice and i'm all for trying to places and supporting local businesses. a tip from the owner, if you see the line stretching out to the tree nearby, don't let it stop you from passing it up. he says customers get their orders in about 5 mins. i definitely recommend anyone to try out this place. the only thing i would change is the addition of fries to the menu. but i guess in a small place like that, there probably wouldn't be room for a deep fryer to cook some fries XD

  • Tom D.

Excellent tri-tip sandwich! There is not much more to say than others already have. The tri-tip is tender and smoky, the rolls are toasty and tasty, and the service is fast. The BBQ sauce was pretty good, fairly sweet with a little smokiness, though it covers up the flavor of the meat. You don't really need it. Chili beans were pretty tasty. My only complaint is that it's a little on the pricey side, especially considering their relatively low overhead. I think next time, I'll just spring for the sandwich. Want to try the ribs and hot links, too.

  • Chris S.

Mike's Grill gets 5 stars just for the Tri Tip... Who cares what the sandwich tastes like. The Tri Tip is so well done... Perfect slightly salty seasoning, strong pink smoke ring and flavor, perfect medium cook, great quality meat and... unlike most folks in town, he can cut it against the grain. Bravo.

  • Jason F.

I have only tried the tri-tip sandwich but each and every time it is excellent. Plenty of meat, perfectly prepared, thinly sliced, stacked high on a fresh grilled roll. YUM!

    (5)
  • Odin C.

i love this place! the tri-tip sandwiches are the best in town! Only rivaled by the Dog House Grill's tri-tip sandwiches. It is a shack, so i wouldn't suggest eating out there especially in the summer heat or winter cold. but definitely a awesome choice if you're eating on the go or out on a lunch break! The sides are okay...chili beans are good the others are a little bland, but lets face it, I'm there for the awesome bbq Mike makes, not the sides! Definitely go and give Mike's Grill a try! The meat is delicious and the bbq sauce adds an amazing kick of flavor as well!

this place is super tiny and super delicious. heard about this place from a gf and this place was apparently getting the rep of having better tri tip sandwhiches than dog house..so of course after hearing this, i just HAD to try this for myself because i LOVE dog house grill. i got there and waited in a line for a few minutes than took my order. i got a regular tri tip sandwhich with the bbq sauce on the side. at first i ate it, and i thought, "hey this is pretty damn good..i dont know if its exactly BETTER than dog house, but pretty up to par.." the meat was really tender and juicy and succulent, the bread was toasty, and the bbq sauce was perfect...and i NEVER eat my tri top with bbq sauce at the other place just cause i think it tends to take away from the taste, but this bbq sauce was so good i ate it with every bite! so i ate it and drove home pretty satisfied and not really sure if i thought it was better than dhg, BUT the next day i was CRAVING the stuff! i mean, u know its good if ur left craving for it..thats when i know anyways! so i told my bf he just had to try it and we drove by but unfortunately this place was closed on a sunday...which is understandable since its the holy day. i also want to talk about the owner himself. i think he was the owner anyways. this guy left such a great impression on me that it made me want to go eat and support his buisness everyday even before trying his food. he was so sweet and kind and so incredibly humble about his booming new buisness. i guess the day i had gone, they had already run out of meat twice..his buisness is definitly picking up fast and he knew it. he seemed so appreciative and almost happily overwhelmed at the success hes expierencing with his buisness but so incredibly grateful and gracious too. He was very friendly and attentive and even apologized for my 2 minute wait in line. im really rooting for this place and for mike. ive told all my friends and family about this place and its cheap and worth it for sure. so worth it.

place is darn good for it being so small.. the BBQ sauce is quite nice good complexity and the big one not over kill on the sweetness.. tri tip sandwich is pretty good id prefer it over dog house grill.. only fault was that it wasnt has hot as it should have been but everything else was spot on.. bread o baby nice since it had garlic butter on it and was toasted which gave the package a perfect delivery.. also had couple pieces of their rips which looked quite amazing.. only fault there was the meat wasnt fully penetrated with flavor.. so if you just had the meat alone without the BBQ i wouldnt like it as much.. meat was fall off the bone material but lacked a big kick.. my side with the tri tip was their chili.. hmm it had a interesting taste not sure if i really liked it but it was decent.. it was a tad bit better when i added some BBQ sauce to it just a small amount lol

A delish Tri Tip sandwich, meat cooked slowly and at a lower temp than other places results in a deep tender smokey goodness piled on a great roll buttered and grilled. Ribs get the same pampered treatment, give um a try when you want the Q but need something other than the sandwich.

All that needs to be said is WOW!!!!! Mike's BBQ is amazing! Ive had both the pull pork sandwich and tri tip and I cant say which one I like the best because bother are perfect! The bread is awesome...the buttery richness of the garlic spread mixed with the flavors of the meats enhances it. Shout out to the THE HABIT....THIS PLACE KNOWS WHAT TRI TIP MEAT IS!! TAKE A LESSON! You can read the words on my review but my suggestion is jump in your car and make the drive to herdon and cedar area! Its well worth it and you will keep going back for more! What even makes this place more amazing is if you are lucky enough you will walk up to Mike himself doing what he does best... grilling on that BBQ!

I drive by this place on my way to school and one day decided to try it. Oh the time I've been wasting! This is the best to-go grill place around and the meat is tender and just right. Garlic bread for the sandwiches....soooo good!

  • Lina S.

3.5 because the tri-tip is delicious (5) but the sides are unworthy (2). i tried the beans and the cole slaw. the beans were bland and so was the cole claw. the trip is another story though. juicy and tender. bread is toasted and compliments the meat so well. i also tried the pulled pork sandwich... ehh. not what you'd expect after taking a bite of the tri-tip. the pulled pork sandwich had too much vinegar.

I have tried every tri-tip sandwich in the Fresno area. No one beats Mikes. It's that simple.

Incredible Tri-tip sandwich. Best in town IMO. Doesn't even need BBQ sauce! Great flavor....perfect!

The food is absolutely amazing!!!!! The owner is such a great guy, my family is totally impressed (and we are tough BBQ critics!). I wish I could recommend this place to everyone by screaming it from the roof top! People should defiantly go out of their way to try this place.

I tried Mike's pulled pork sandwich last week and it was as good or better than anything I've had in the world-famous Kansas City b-b-q joints. Melt-in-your-mouth tender, tasty bun, perfect container of sauce.....I could stand a spicier sauce, but that is just personal taste. Cole slaw was fine and anxious to try the mac salad next time as it was sold out. What a treasure!

If velvet tasted like something it would be Mikes BBQ. There are very few times that I smile its when I'm watching the ninja turtles and when I am eating mikes. The place is small and has some seating outside. The food is prepared in decent time. The tri tip is amazing juicy and not dry and they give u a good amount not some tiny piece but a big one.I didn't put BBQ sauce since the meat was good. I also tried the ribs which were fucking awesome!!!! I try to go to this place at least once a month.

If you like excellently BBQed meats, then you must try Mikes. 5 star every time. One of Fresno's finest spots. Go now. ....now they have shaved ice too

Mike's grill claim the best tri-tip sandwich, I was good but definitely not the best, the place is simple, BBQ sauce that goes with the sandwich was pretty good. If I was in the area I would probably stop again but wouldn't drive just to come and eat.

Made it over fun lunch and we ordered the tri-tip sandwich and ribs....both were delicious and the sauce took it over the top...a smoky with a little kick. Definitively will be back again.

This is the way I like my food--fresh with no frills. The man cooks like I do with butter, pork, bread; just simple foods made to taste delicious. The menu is limited because it's a small place so if they run out before you get there, oh well, come back tomorrow. They can't just go out back to the freezer, pull out more food and microwave it. Everything is cooked for that day so it is ultra fresh and very tasty. My husband had the tri-tip sandwich, which was good; but I had the pulled pork (because I could eat pork every day) and it was divine. I normally eat half of my sandwich, and even pull the ingredients out because it's tooooo much. Not this time. I ate the whole thing. The pork was very tasty, with a bit of crunch and tang from the marinated veggies. Someone else mentioned the roll. It is very good, perfect for this sandwich. No frills. You get your sandwich in a brown paper bag with a few napkins and some sauce. You can sit at the short counter or out under the trees in the parking lot. There are no slogans, no signs, just good food done right. Can we have a few more places like this in Fresno?

Very tasty and tender tri-tip sandwich! BBQ sauce with it was incredibly flavorful. A simple drive in stand, but worth the 4 minutes off the highway for a yummy and filling meal.

I'm from Texas and we don't do the tri-tip cut, but upon the Yelp recommendations I figured it was worth a try. Really good sandwich. Nice smoke flavor, juicy and fresh bun. If they served beer, would have been a five-star.

  • L B.

We had the pulled pork sandwich and the tri-tip, both were delicious. The buttered, toasted roll was a nice surprise. The spicy beans would be excellent for a chili dog. Our order came out very quickly during a busy lunch rush. We will be back for sure.

Like others said, the best tri-tip sandwich in Fresno. (I don't even know why Dog House Grill is considered the "standard" or the competition -- it's not in the same league.) Perfectly cooked and flavored tri-tip, sliced thin and served on delicious toasted bread. Great with or without the barbeque sauce. Sides are lackluster -- beans and... I forget what else I even tried. I guess because the sides are forgettable. And yet I still give this place five stars, because the sandwich is that good. Also, husband had the pulled pork and loved it.

  • Darren S.

Before Mike's Grill, my favorite tri-tip sandwich was from Firestone in SLO. This place has taken over the top spot. Didn't care much for the sides but the meat was tasty, succulent and while the sauce was good - wasn't necessary. The roll was light, buttery, and in a good ratio to meat

  • Mike A.

This place is awesome for the following reasons... 1. People named Mike are bad-ass! (Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, Mike's Grill..etc) 2. The tri-tip is damn good. 3. Everyone I know who's been here loves it Unless you're vegetarian, eat here. I rest my case

  • Frank R.

MIght very well be the best tri-tip sandwich in Fresno. At first glance, I thought the portion of meat tucked inside the roll was a little bit skimpy (you can order a half pound tri-tip sandwich for 9 bucks), but the $7.25 one I ordered was quite enough and filling. The bread was nicely toasted and a little garlic flavor came through as well that was enjoyable. All the elements that you want in an excellent tri-tip sandwich were present: tender meat, smoke ring, and well seasoned!

    (4)
  • Ri S.

Delicious and tender tri-tip served on what I think is garlic bread. The ribs are meaty and tender unlike other places. Flavor is consistent and I'm never disappointed when I stop by, that BBQ sauce is to die for. Lemonade was tart with just enough sweetness. Will be coming back to try the rest of the menu.

  • Niti W.

It's as good as it gets in Fresno for tri tip sandwiches. Yeah I'll pass on bulldog grill but not their fries that are heavenly!. Mikes tri tip sandwich so yummy!!!! The bread is nicely toasted and garlicky, the sauce is on the side for you to dip which is perfect because I hate soggy bread. The sauce is great as well. My husband has a new lunch spot since he works nearby, I just wish I was closer or at least at that part of town. This place is not to be missed of you're into tri tip sandwiches.

  • S P.

Can't go wrong with either this place or Dog House grill. Unlike dog house, they give you a barbeque dipping sauce instead so you get a better overall taste of the meat. My knock on this place is they don't really have variety of sides, but the chili is very good though. I can't give them a five star because their menu simply isn't on par with the dog house and their side of fries.

  • Tracy E.

Order Tri tip sandwich and 1/2 rack of ribs and rice pilaf as the side. The tri tip sandwich was amazing. Meat was so tender and juicy, it was excellent on its own with out the bbq sauce, so I just occasionally dipped the sandwich in the bbq sauce. The pork ribs were excellent also. Lots of meat on each rib and the nest just fell off the bone. The pilaf was ok, it was a little on the dry side. But don't we go to a bbq restaurant for bbq and not the side. My daughter liked it. I am a fan of a more sweeter bbq sauce so I could change one thing that's all. But in all honesty the sauce was good. I think this is going to be my families quick Monday night dinners after my daughter's dance class across the street. CAN'T WAIT FOR MONDAYS

  • Jeremy B.

After having the smokey, juicy tri-tip from Mikes I can never go back to Dog House Grill and be satisfied with that sandwich of mediocrity again. With the normal sandwich there may not be as much meat like Doghouse but the quality surpasses the quantity but they do offer an option with double the meat if that's what you want. This may be heresy as well but the BBQ sauce is a million times tastier as well. Definitely recommend Mike's over Doghouse anyway except for Sunday cause they're closed.

For the first time ever a place that doesn't lie when they say they are the best at something. HANDS down THE best tri tip sandwich ive ever had in my life. I cant believe ive been living down the street from this treasure for so long, but haven't tried it till today!!!! Shame on me, haha. Needless to say, I will become a regular. Great price, great food, fast service. Love love love Mike's grill!

Stopped by to try the BBQ tri tip sandwich. I really like it. The meat was juicy, moist and sliced thin. It came on a toasty bun with an awesome garlic butter spread. The BBQ sauce tasted like doghouse grill to me. I liked that it was on the side. My husband and I got a reg tri tip sandwich and we shared it. It was plenty. There wasn't a ton of meat but it was enough. I would totally be back. The lemonade was great also. I got a sugar free shaved ice and it was super good!! Fast and friendly service also.

This place is great! A little expensive for a struggling college student with bills to pay! But it's really good! I'm 4'11 & 98lbs & I eat just as much as my 200lbs bf. Next time ill most likely get the jumbo Tri tip with extra meat & a medium side of pilaf because I'm a monster when it comes to food! The tri tip sandwich was BOMB has so much flavor from the grill in my opinion better than dog house it's not as big as the dog house BBQ sandwich but the taste is way better!! & so was the pilaf, definitely the best pilaf I've ever had at a restaurant. Also the barbecue sauce is good. Not to sweet & just the right amount of tang! Also, the owner is really nice! Great guy & super friendly!! Ill definitely be back! When I have the money for it ;)

Love this place! I work at Fresno State and drive up to Mike's periodically for lunch. Its always good food served quickly. I especially like the rice and the beans as sides!

I really, really wanted this to be the best tri-tip I've ever eaten, but sadly it wasn't. I ordered the tri-tip sandwich and my friend ordered the rack of ribs. My tri-tip was well marinated and cooked well in between toasty bread, however, it was slightly too smoky and salty for my taste. My friend's ribs were just average and as we ate in the outside area, I felt like I was being eaten alive by all the flies that attacked my food and crawled all over my skin. I should have taken to-go like the people who ordered ahead of me, but as it was my first time there, I didn't know that there were that many flies competing for my food. Considering the average food and the ok price I would have given them 3 stars, however, the swarming flies were just not ok.

Best tri-tip I've had in years. I'd seen this place for a long time but never stopped in. One day I decided to give it a try and I'm so glad I did. If you're going to have lunch go early. Sides are decent.

I don't do 5 stars very often, but this place is definitely worthy! I've heard all the fuss and we just happened to be in the area of town today, so I made the executive decision to stop. I'm so glad we stopped. I got the tri tip with chili beans, Eric got the pulled pork. We took it home. It was delicious. The seasonings on the tri tip were perfect, the bread was perfect. The sauce was on the side. At first, I wondered why, but then it all made sense. You can dip it or just leave it off. Either way, the sandwich was delicious. It was the perfect ratio of bread to meat. I inhaled it, At first I thought it may need more meat, but no, the ratio was good. I felt I could have eaten another one. I'm pregnant and it wasn't the biggest sandwich in the world, but my chili filled me up. Eric's pulled pork was good too. It had slaw already on it, which he isn't used to. I think that's the way it should be eaten, he would prefer it on the side. He still said it was delicious. The menu is small. Not a huge variety of sides, but that's ok. They do a few things, and they do them perfectly. I like the chili beans well enough, but once I added my leftover bbq sauce, I liked them even more (chili isn't really my thing usually). The guy working was very nice and the food was prepared quickly. I will be back (although I want to try meat market, just to compare).

I seriously had to give Mikes 5 stars (my FIRST 5 star review) after today because it was just amazing. Their tri-tip truly is the very best I have ever had. That beats my families, my brothers, and anywhere else in town I have had it. It is amazing. Tender, juicy, flavorful, everything you could ever want in a tri-tip. I finally tried their chili beans today, and this sealed the deal for me. If I could, I would buy quarts of them because they are just that good. It's taken me 30 years to find chili beans as good as my dad makes, and I finally have. Amazing. You're the best, Mikes. Every time I go you seem to get better and better. I don't know how you do it, but keep it up!

I like this place, and have gone plenty of times. The tri-tip sandwich is the way to go! ask for extra sauce! My only gripe, as perviously stated, the consistence is all over the place sometimes TOO salty, or the meat is super dry, but sometimes it's AMAZING!

    (4)

Simply put it is the best tri-tip in town. Place is packed come lunch time. Owner is super friendly and always willing to talk. Meat is juicy and melts in your mouth.

I felt the need to update the update of my original review. It's like every time I go here it gets a little better, which when compared to past visits seems impossible because its already amazing. Having previously tried the ribs, I decided to have them again. They were delicious before, but tonight they were even better, which I would have thought impossible! The ribs were super juicy and were cooked absolutely perfectly, when I got done eating the last rib I thought "Well damn now they are all gone, this sucks!" I also decided that tonight I would get the macaroni salad, a side that I usually never get, because no one can ever seem to make it properly. Well Mike's manages to pull it off and make a fantastic macaroni salad! It doesn't have that cloyingly sweet mayonnaise taste that a lot of pasta salad had, it almost tasted like it was a light pesto with hints of dill in it. I scarfed it down and wish I had gotten 2 sides, it was THAT good. I would also like to take this opportunity to say that the owner, who I am assuming is named Mike, is a pretty cool dude. He is always happy to see customers, and always thanks them for coming. When I see him standing there behind the counter, I kinda feel like giving him a high five. Also it is worth noting that whenever I come here, I always end up meeting pretty cool people standing in line. Today while waiting for my ribs, which coincidentally was a very short wait, we were talking about the iphone and just sort of hanging out. As always this place rules, and if you say otherwise you probably have some sort of head trauma, or a horrible affliction that affects your tastebuds.

Finally got to try the tri tip sandwich here after reading all the reviews on here. The sandwich was good. I enjoyed the toasty bun and the tri tip was tender and sliced thin, just the way I like it. I don't know about this place being WAY better than Doghouse. It was good but I don't think it was better. Mike's has a yummy bun and thinly sliced tri tip, but Doghouse give you more meat and I like their bbq sauce more. I call it a tied. If you are in a hurry and want a tri tip sando to go I would say go to Mike's. If you want to enjoy your company, watch some tv, and escape the heat I would say go to Doghouse. Would I come back to Mike's? Definitely! PS Mike is a nice guy!

  • Michael B.

Damn good tri-tip. Other reviews complained it was dry, but I love the fact that the meat is smoked and not bathed in bbq sauce. The meat had a great smokey flavor to it and I had no need to put any of the sauce they included. Also got a side of chili beans and wish I had gotten a medium sized one instead of the small, they were that good. Definitely going back to try both the ribs and the pulled pork. This place has become my favorite spot for tri-tip now, it's that good.

  • Jolly M.

Delicious and juicy. I am all about the alacarte tri-tip. Make sure to lather on the bbq sauce. I like smoked bbq with the char crusting smoked edges, this lacked it, yet was still worth it.

  • Aron S.

I'm dropping a star here due to 4 things. 1 When they were first going, there was a Macaroni Salad side dish which they quit making but said was coming back soon. Over a year has gone by, and no mac salad. It was their best side IMHO. 2 The quantity of meat on the Regular may have been lightened, and the Jumbo could certainly use an increase for the price. Mike's Grill is constantly compared to Dog House Grill which will blow the doors off for total meat quantity... 3 The menu used to have a 3-rib option which was about perfect for little guys. Where'd that go? 4 Lastly, there has been a noticeable variance in saltiness of the meat on different trips. Too much salt is no bueno. Consistency is key.

Doghouse? Meat Market? Watts? No, it's all about Mike's Grill for ur tri-tip sandwich period, no questions... I read plenty of yelp reviews, talking bout how good this place is, I admit to the whole eye rolling(in my head was, come on people, can't be that serious). And of course, I eventually got worked up to make time to try this place. Off I go still a non-believer, as a matter of fact, if this place disappoint me, I'm gonna blame it on all these yelpers(takeaway some street cred). Sure enough, as soon as I took a bite- OMFG- speechless, kept my mouth chewing, while my tastebuds was having orgasm, and my mind lifted to a state of climax. Ever since, I been preaching my story to all people that hasn't had a chance to try Mike's Grill. Believe it or not, most of them that took my advice, have made more return trips than myself, as a matter of fact. I think comparing Mike's Grill to dog house is a direct insult to Mike himself. Let me finish this review before I feel the need to get some of that BOMB ASS tri-tip sandwich....

  • Lauren H.

So after years of reading about this place on Yelp, we finally made it. Has to be the best tri-tip sandwich we have had available for purchase (yes, I can make better at my house, and no, they aren't for sale). The toasted bun, I believe, really elevates this sandwich to the next level. The sauce isn't really anything special, but if your sandwich is that good, who needs sauce? Meat was excellent...tender and rich, with nice smoked flavor. I like that they keep the menu simple, real simple. Do what you do, and do it right.

Still 5 stars! I was talking about this place to my coworkers every time someone brought up good food so we all pooled our money together and my manager went to Mike's and we all got tri tip sandwiches and ate them on our lunch breaks. Now everyone at work has experienced their tri tip sandwiches. Do you know how hard it was to work and interact with customers knowing I had Mike's Grill sitting in the back waiting for me?? I kept sneaking in the back and taking bites until I could go on my lunch break. I'm glad everyone got to taste it. Seriously,. Go here. You won't be disappointed.

The reviews for this place don't lie- this is the spot to go for a satisfyingly delicious tri-tip sandwich. I was actually out for a margherita panini from the bakery down the street, but they are part of a growing list of retarded bakeries I've run across that only serve cafe food until 2pm, yet they're open until 6pm. Their loss is Mike's gain! By itself, the sandwich is quite good, the meat is juicy and tender, but its even better with the BBQ sauce. As someone else has mentioned- it has the perfect meat to bun ratio. You never get a mouthful of just bread. I also tried the potato salad, but unfortunately, it was a flop. Not a fan of it at all. It was more like dry, vinegary mashed potatoes. A very weird taste and texture. I like it more creamy and rich, with fresh dill. The guy who (I think) owns the place is super friendly and had no problem recommending items on the menu to a first-timer like me. I came around 6pm and was surprised to be the only one there, given all these glowing reviews. Though the food comes out so fast, I'm sure a long line would be taken care of in no time. Definitely my new go-to place for BBQ in Fresno.

The smoke flavor, the tenderness and quality of the meat...amazing! Must try the the tri-tip sandwiches, I usually get the jumbo size, more meat! The bread is delicious too!

The tri-tip sandwiches are consistently good. The employees are consistently apathetic. I called in once because I was in a rush and was hoping the food could be ready by the time I got there. The teenager manning the kiosk told me there were no other customers in line and had a hard time understanding why I needed to place an order in advance. The tri-tip manages to be quite good despite the strong "I-Don't-Want-To-Be-Here" aura given off by the teenage employees who serve it. I've tried some of the other stuff on their menu, but nothing else compares to the tri tip.

I dont give a 5 star rating to often, but this place definitely deserves it!!! Great tri-tip sandwich!! The ribs are off the hook. The BBQ sauce is great(wish it had a little more spice). The service is fast. Not enough seating, but i dropped the tailgate of my pickup and ate. The meats are very tender, has a good hint of smoke and the rub is very tasty. Great BBQ place!!! One of the best in Fresno. If u haven't tried this place, its a must try!!!! I will definitely eat here many times to come!!!

So I am not sure what I can say about this place that has not been said yet. What I love about this food. Its goes back to real BBQ. Eating outside with a table and chairs enjoying a nice breeze. Not sitting in a super loud sports bar filled with drunks. Here when you order your most likely talking to the owner not some snot of a kid. I had the small tri tip combo; they have a big one that adds more meat. Mike the owner told us he bakes the bread himself daily. And you can taste how good it is. The meat has so much flavor and is so tender. Then you add the bbq sauce and the flavor is way increased. There is no other place in town that makes their meat this tasty. While we were there we got lucky and mike the owner had us try out a plate of his ribs to see how we liked them. He was playing with the rubs and wanted our opinion. 5 stars across the board. This place is awesome. Simple service, quick and absolutely the best around. Both their sauce and tri tip can not be beat. Other places pale in comparison especially the Meat market.

The best tri-tip sandwich I've ever had. The rice pilaf and chili beans are very good as well. I couldnt tell you how the other meat sandwiches taste because after around 20 visits, I cant get myself to risk trying anything else. The only better beef sandwiches I've ever had were some brisket sandwiches I've had at a few BBQ places in Texas and New Mexico. Also, the owner is there nearly every visit and always makes sure to ask how everything is and to give thanks for the business. I hope he can expand to a restaurant some day.

Solid, solid food. Not the best BBQ I have had, but definitely in the top 3 in Fresno. Inexpensive for the quality of food. Nice sized portions. Sauce has a nice little bite to it, not super spicy. Meat has a nice smoke flavor, not over smoked. The owner uses wood (appears to be oak) as I say him wheeling a wheelbarrow of the stuff over this his smoking rig.

Like many others, i've driven past here a thousand times and never stopped. With the rest of the week off and back in town, it was finally time to see what the fuss is about. and good god, i've been missing out. best tri tip i've ever had. Best. the fuss is with good reason. bbq sauce is delicious as well, and complements the tri tip perfectly, just the right amount of spice, and just the right level of sweet. Utterly unpretentious, and very reasonable (tri tip sandwich, 2 sides, and a drink for $10). worth every cent. definitely coming back; don't know if i can miss the tri tip to try anything else though.

This is the 2nd time I've eaten at Mike's Grill. The first time I ordered a pulled pork sandwich bc I'm a huge fan of swine, even though the sign said best tri-tip sando in town. The pulled pork sando is actually quite good, from what I remember. This time I opted to try the tri-tip sando and chili beans. The bread is slightly toasted I think, and overall the sando is tasty when adding the bbq sauce. The problem I had with it was that the meat seemed kind of dry, and I like my meat juicy with super pink/red centers and these slices were mostly all well done and brown, hence the reason I added all the bbq sauce. I wouldn't go so far as to call it the best tri-tip in town, but it might challenge some other heavily favored tri-tip sandos around the area. After trying both the pork and tri-tip, I currently favor the pulled pork sando over the tri-tip. Mike's is a no frills place where you can take your order to go or sit outside and eat your food.

Whats not to love about this place? Its good, its fast, its reasonably priced, its consistent and I never leave unsatisfied. The Good:: +The food! Flavor is just great. Meat so tender it just falls apart, the pulled pork has levels of flavor to it and the ribs are fantastic. +The service. For a walk up booth, they treat you really well. Friendly, fast, no complaints. +Price. For the food you're getting, I don't think the price was unfair at all. The Bad::: -Outside. This isn't a deterrent, but man, on hot days it really sucks to wait. -Nothing else really. Overall::: This isn't a sit down restaurant, so don't dress up. Its a booth restaurant where the owner wakes up at the crack of dawn to slow cook his meat. Its BBQ that tastes a whole world better than the slop they call food at Famous Daves and doesn't disappoint. Just go, get it to go, pop a movie in at the house and enjoy. Really recommend if you're needing something fast/good for lunch. I visit often :)

I came here because I had heard so much about it and I was visiting a friend up the street. Figured I'd go for the tri-tip because it seemed to be their signature sandwich. I walked up around 11:45 so I beat the lunch rush and the service was incredibly fast. By the time the kid behind the register took my money, the sandwich was in a bag and on the counter for me to pick up. I know it's not necessarily fair to compare this place to Dog House but since that is the only other tri-tip sandwich I've had in Fresno, my brain goes there. It was a good sandwich, but here's why I gave it only three starts... The meat for the price. With prices not that far off from Dog House prices for tri-tip, I was expecting Dog House proportions in the meat department. Sadly disappointed. On top of that, it was a little dryer than I was expecting. I loved the bread and the sauce saved the day, but I was only given one small, half-filled container that I rationed to use on one half of the sandwich. With that said, this place is still pretty cool. You can sit outside to eat or take it on the go. It's easy to get to, but also easy to miss if you're not paying attention. I like it. I'd be willing to try some of their other stuff. I'll just pass on the tri-tip unless I get extra sauce.

Juicy, tender meat and awesome BBQ sauce. The ribs were smokey and flavorful and the Tri-tip was sliced thin and perfect. The chili beans were okay but it's just my preference that chili be thick. The flavor was great. I craved BBQ and Mike's Grill was satisfying!

Hmm, i see what all the hype's about. This tri-tip is legit. I'm honestly not even a HUGE fan of tri-tip. I usually go for ribs or chicken or fish but never usually tri-tip. After i had Watt's and Dog House, i became a fan. And after i've had Mike's, i'm an even bigger fan. First off, Mike (the owner) is MADD cool. Never have i been to a restaurant--no matter how big or small, no matter the style of food or the area that it's in--where the actual owner of the joint was right there, front and center, and ready to converse and somewhat "hang" with the customers. He was so friendly! That alone made me think "Hmm, even if his food sucks, i'd still say this was a good spot just because of the customer service and camaraderie he shows". Thumbs up to Mike for being such a down-to-earth guy. Well, based off of my first impression, anyway. The menu is simple and straightforward. There's no confusion at all, which i appreciated. I don't remember everything that was on there but i do remember tri-tip sandwiches, pulled pork, sides (like chili beans and chips, etc) The tri-tip sandwhich i had was bomb! Perfectly tender meat as everyone has said, and the BBQ sauce provided is super good. The tri-tip is perfect by itself, but the BBQ sauce definitely enhances the meal. It was that perfect blend of sweet and sour, that tangy and spicy kinda taste. It was really good. I also ordered some chili beans and they were GOOD! I wish they would've had more meat in them but they were good the way they were. It was a nice compliment to the tri-tip. I also loved the bread they use. It was really soft, had garlic and some other type of seasoning on there i think, and it was delish. A good compliment to the meat and bread. Lets just say everything got dipped in everything. The beans, meat, bread, and BBQ sauce were all a good mix of flavors, lol. The area the place is located is cool. It's pretty decent. Right there in Fresno at Cedar & Palo Alto. Right up the street from that huge, well-known church called "The People's Church". It's an outdoor "walk-up" type of joint, like Rally's burger. There's a little seating area too, with a few chairs and a tent. It's a cool little chill spot, nothing fancy or anything. Simple and gets the job done. The ONLY reasons i'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because i think it's a TAD bit overpriced, and the fact that there wasn't a good combo meal deal type thing on the menu. The tri-tip sandwich alone was friggin 7 bucks. At Watt's i can get some decent tri-tip, as well as 2 sides, for about the same price, give or take a dollar or two. I'm not a cheap-skate; i just believe in getting what you pay for and getting stuff for a good value. The tri-tip was legit but i feel you should get more for the price you're paying. Regardless, it was good stuff. I'm a fan for sure.

Tri tip is smokey and tender on a garlic bread roll. Yumm-o! I'm not from Fresno and would have never found this place without Yelp. This is the reason it's my favorite app!

BEST TRI-TIP SAMMICH IN THE WORLD! For years I raved about Dog House's tri-tip sammich and how no one has ever topped it. Well folks, that time has come. What we have here is some fine tri-trip smothered in a delicious BBQ sauce placed in a warm toasted roll basted with garlic buttery goodness! Def a lunch time favorite. Seriously people. Do not hesitate to eat here. I'm crossing my fingers that they'll open a restaurant soon. Would I go back? Yes. Would I recommend? Hellsyes. Would I take a date here? No. Favorite dishes: I've only tried one...the tri-tip sammich!

Finally made it to Mikes for a couple of Tri Tip sammies. As other reviewers stated, it's just a tiny building with a little bit of seating outdoors but it's serviceable. I'll gladly sit there and eat next time if I'm not in a hurry. Service was nice and prompt. The guy who took our order seemed a little out of sorts but he wasn't rude or anything and he was efficient. I was a bit surprised at how quickly we got our sandwiches but it was a pleasant surprise. We ate on the road so didn't mess with the provided bbq sauce and ate them plain. That was not a problem AT ALL. I hope there's room on the bandwagon for us because we're fans. The whole time we were chewing we kept mumbling "What is that? OMG what is that flavor?" because the meat has this amazing flavor that you can't quite pinpoint or seem to get enough of. They really know how to build a sandwich here too. I've kind of gotten used to sucking it up and dealing with sandwiches that fall apart a little more with each bite, but not these. I expected my white shirt to be ruined before I got halfway finished, but other than some toasty little bread crumbs, I was nice and clean. The bread to meat ratio is perfect and even when you attack it with one hand it manages to stay intact somehow. It's like magic. These sandwiches are magically delicious! Considering how quickly Mikes turns out perfectly made, mouth watering sandwiches, there's really no excuse to opt for crappy fast food on your lunch break if you're anywhere near this place. Unless you dislike meat as a whole, I promise you'll like this place.

Personally, i think the tri-tip is better than doghouse but I only go to Mikes Grill because its walking distance from my parents house. If you want something quick and delicious go right ahead but if youre with a larger group of friends and need a sit down place theres plenty of other places nearby.

I found this place through a friend (thanks sabby) and have been back a couple of times. The tri-tip is super yummy and the bread they serve it on is delicious. I also tried the pulled pork and it is also very good. They both come with the bbq sauce which is very good. Overall a great place to grab a quick bite to eat.

Very great tasting tri-tip sandwich. I love the flavor and even prefer it over doghouse sometimes, although the two offer different tastes. The bbq sauce is tangy and rich and I love the crunchy texture of the roll. Sometimes unfortunately I will get a sandwich and the meat will be very fatty and chewy. It ruins my craving for this place but I really do enjoy it overall.

I've always been a tri-tip fan. Tri-tip is one of the best cuts of meat you will find. I've had them all in Fresno - the meat market, doghouse, QN4U, Sunnyside delicatessen and much more. Mikes tri-tip is by far the best. It is tenderly smoked, extra moist and full of flavor. The sandwich is so great I find it nearly a sin to put BBQ sauce on it. Mike himself is by far of the coolest owners out there. No matter how busy he gets he always makes sure to come out and ask his customers how they are doing. Where else are you going to find that in Fresno. Since having Mike's Grill for the first time a few months ago and dozens of times since then I will never have another tri-tip sandwich anywhere else

My goodness, I've been seeing this place for years but never bothered to try it because any other bbq place, they all taste the same. But their sandwich made me a believer! It was so moist and seasoned well and the pulled pork was amazing. The coleslaw def made the difference within that pulled pork. Definitely coming back and their ribs were simply amazing. Again, it was seasoned to my liking, which is very impt.

  • Mr. B.

Just have to reiterate how incredible this tri-tip sandwich is. Have gone here a few more times since my original review and it really is that good, and I think it's getting better somehow. If there's better tri tip I'd really like to taste it.

  • Curtis A.

4.5 stars still... This is the Tri-tip that I'd compare all others against. Tender, but not over cooked to the point of loosing the meaty texture. Moist. Well seasoned. To the point of my not really using or needing the BBQ sauce. (which is pretty good) Consistant. 4 different visits and pretty much the same everytime. Besides the obvious in regards to the no dining room issue, my only beef so to speak (hee-hee), is the sides. I haven't found one that I can really glom on to yet. Beans were OK. Pilaf was OK. I want a side that matches the stellar Tri-tip! Hmmm, perhaps I'm just spoiled and living with a sense of entitlement.

LEGIT!! This is a gem in north east Fresno. It is right next to my favorite Chinese restaurant, Hunan. The tri tip sandwich is the real star here. Perfectly seasoned and moist served on a grilled garlic roll. Amazing! Had half a pork sandwich. Also very good. The pickled cabbage went well with the richness of the pork and BBQ sauce. The ribs were okay, not my favorite since I am a beef rib fan. The chili beans on the side were also excellent. Not too tomato-y, but lots of spice and meat. I will be coming here frequently. Met Big Mike, the owner. Super nice fellow, was surprised I drove from Visalia just to try his place. Great job Mike. Steve out.

Finally made it here. Yes its the old little key shack behind union bank on cedar and herndon. Had the Tri-Tip Combo, Pilaf, and a side of 2 bones. Tri-tip was juicy and good, meat-o-plenty! BBQ sauce is good. Need to try the Chili Beans next time from what id heard. The Ribs..... good but not the best that ive had. They do have a few tables and a counter you can eat at but not too much seating. Good stuff and FAST! Got in and out within 20 min. I guess the most of the time was trying to catch the flying napkins. Great little lunch spot. BTW they do take CARDS!

I tried Mikes Grill this evening for the first time. My husband and I wanted to pick up a quick meal before the game. Probably the best tri-tip sandwich I've had in Fresno! Meat had delicious flavor, super tender, and the grilled roll was perfect. Order the "jumbo" sandwich, it was packed with meat!

This place is a must for tri-tip lovers. The smoked TT cannot be beat at any other place in town, including Doghouse Grill and the Meat Market.

I've eaten here several times. Their tri-tip sandwhich is great, but I have found my favorite in the pulled pork sandwhich. Love the toasted bread, great flavor, and love the the pulled pork comes with a cabbage and carrots that gives it a good crunch. I always get the meal and order the pilaf for my side that is great too. Just wish the portion was a bit bigger because I always want more. I took my fiance there to try it. He got the ribs and LOVED THEM! He said there were far better than Doghouse Grill. He can't wait to go back again!

Perfectly seasoned tri-tip but no sides please. Went there with the boyfriend today. Got a jumbo tri- tip, 2. Piece rib special, macaroni salad and chili beans. The chili was a sOupy meat consistency with sparce beans. The macaroni salad was bland with those hard shell shaped noodles. My boyfriend lovs macaroni salad so we got it but it was not great. The ribs were pretty good. I really enjoyed it but the man thought it was just ok. The sauce was super good though. Now the 4 starer! That wonderful tri-tip!! Perfectly seasoned on top of crispy wrapped round bread. It was the best balance. I bit into it and bam!!! Tenderness. It lived up to the yelp reviewsi read b4 going. It was about $8-9. but its nots overly huge like jumbo would make u think. This sandwhi h is built.to where when u bite nothing falls out. No messy disgusting business. Best sandwhich ever!! It does not need sauce!! Will be back for that sandwhich!!

Wow... How have I never heard about this place! These guys are the real-god-damn-deal. Like everyone else, it's only natural to compare this place to the other tri-tip staples of Fresno. But the fact is, those places DON'T compare. I now have no reason to go to Dog House Grill unless it's beer with friends. Although both serve great tasty tri-tip sandwiches, Doghouse is about $2 more and they give you half a cow's body on the sandwich (not a horrible thing, it's just a bit much and I do care about the condition of my heart). Mike's, on the other hand, serves a more manageable sandwich, packing a lot more flavor and is less expensive to boot. The owner, I'm going to assume is Mike, is a great friendly guy who truly loves making us happy. It really is a shame we don't have more places like this in Fresno. This place is awesome and I can't wait to come back in town to have more!! Oh, and I've read another person's review about how this place belongs on Man vs Food.... That's got my vote. Let's make it happen Fresnans!!

I was so happy that we decided to try Mike's Grill after seeing the review in Yelp. Yelpers never lie!!!! It was the best bbq & sandwich ever!!! I ordered 8 oz sliced Tri-tip, ribs, tri-tip sandwich, and chili. All are good! The fact that the joint was on a parking lot kinda has its ups and down side. One of the downside was the wind which giving distraction on enjoying your delicious bbq. Prepare to hold down your napkins or just order it and enjoy it in your car.

MMM.... You have GOT to give it up for this place, seriously. My first bite I literally thought to myself, "Holy shit!" It is, perhaps, the best tri-tip I've ever tasted. And not just for Fresno only, but in general. The meat is so moist and tender, and has that little smokey taste marinated into every tasty morsel that make up this sandwich (which is unique and rare). It doesn't hurt either that the perfectly toasted buns they use, is smeared with a light garlic spread. I've tried a few things from here and all are pretty solid, in terms of taste. Even their sides are pretty good. My only complaint is, I wish they had more soda options! A root-beer to me always goes well with BBQ....it's probably the molasses ;-) After you've tried this place, you'll be saying, "Dog House who?"

    (5)
  • Angel L.

Their tri tip sandwiches are one million times better than dog house! The meat is juicy and grilled perfectly. They really know what they're doing. The only reason I gave this place four stars is because it's a little shack so the seating is outside with little shade. If you decide to eat here, beware of flies.

  • Mary S.

The tri-tip is out of this world. I love the added bonus of a nice, crispy, buttered bun. The BBQ sauce is DELISH, and the rice and chili beans are freaking tasty. Good job, Mike!!!

I actually passed this place up when I entered the plaza because I didn't know that this business took over the old key shop. It should have been a dead giveaway that there was a grill out in the parking lot, but I was looking more of a restaurant than sorta an outside booth. I ordered the normal size tri-tip and their special 2 rib bones for 3 bucks. The tri-tip was overall pretty good. The bun was a toasted italian buttered bread and it was perfectly made. My only problem with the tri-tip was that it wasn't really hot temperature wise. I came exactly at twelve noon with a couple of friends and I thought the meat would have been better if it was a lot hotter. The 2 rib bones for 3 buck special was very good. It was extremely hot and the meat just melted off the bone. I almost lost all the meat onto my lap when i took the first bite and it just came right off. I don't know if their BBQ sauce is home made, but it was really good. Not to sweet and had a good complex flavor. For this place to be this good and be a small booth I give it mad props. Definitely would come here if I don't want to drive to dog house grill which is up the ways a bit. Actually I would put this on the same level as Dog house grill and its cheaper. Everybody should come check this place out. I'm sure in no time this place will go from jewel in the rough to mainstream hangout spot.

This place is great. Good food and good price. I had seen it many times but I never tried it before a buddy raved about how awesome the food is. If you go around lunch time, notice how many guys are eating in their white trucks... it is a favorite of contractors (my buddy is a contractor and we ate in his white truck).

This tri-tip is so good, it makes me borerline bi-polar just thinking about it... A sense of joy about finding such a place. Sadness that it's so far away. Anger that there isn't a place like Mike's close to me. Nostalgia about that first experience. Hope that I will one day return. All these emotions in literally less than 3 seconds, in my mind. There really isn't anything else to say that already hasn't been said. But I'll say it anyways just to reinforce the fact: -The bread here is the best you could use for a tri tip sandwich. So simple, I think to myself... Why couldn't I have thought that?" -They have a huge BBQ/smoker in the lot that you can see...that thing was smokin' hard when I arrived in the lot.. Once I saw it, I knew I was at the right place. -The Tri-Tip itself was perfectly cooked, low and slow, and you can even see a little pinkness on the edges, which I assume is smoke ring, but most people probably think it's blood from being cooked medium. -The BBQ sauce perfectly compliments the tri tip, with it's well balanced sweet and tangy flavor profiles. Oh, and they give you the sauce on the side... letting you control how much you want on. Thank you Mike. -Service was top notch. Mike was there and hooked it up...literally. I inquired about ordering just two ribs because I didn't feel like getting a 1/2 rack. He said no, but then two minutes later he walks out with an end tip and said, "Here, try this." YEAH MAN! Free rib hook up! But to tell the truth, not the best rib, but it was an end piece, and it was complimentary. Kudos. So, that's it. Simple. Go eat this. Now. Seriously, this is the best around.

Tried this place after all the good reviews and got the tri tip sandwich. The tri tip was very good as well as the toasted garlic bread, was toasted just right. As for the BBQ sauce wasn't impressed. Was good but tasted like any other sauce from a bottle. Wish they had multiple sauces to try. Will definitely be back to try the ribs and pulled pork. For it being better than doghouse.... Nope

BEST Tri-tip sandwich EVER!!!!! Doghouse has nothing on this place! Only complaint is that they don't serve the macaroni salad anymore :( Come on Mike, bring it back!

Best Tri-Tip sandwich in town. Pick it up and take it home unless its a nice day, only a couple tables and chairs outside. I usually get a jumbo sandwich with beans, wasn't a fan of the pilaf, I've made better. Also the garlic bread is the bread that comes w/ the sandwich toasted w/ butter and garlic yummm! The bbq sauce on the side is sooo good, smokey not too sweet like the bottled stuff. Service there is friendly and quick. Have not tried the hotlinks or ribs but I am sure they are great as well.

  • Nick A.

This is the best tri-tip sandwich you can get. That's all you really need to know, but I'll go on. The REASON why it's the best is because this guy prepares everything just the right way. He toasts the bread, slices the meat nice and thin and stacks it up, puts on the garlic spread, and (obviously) cooks the meat to perfection. Yeah, tri-tip is good, even if you just throw it on a damn hotdog bun and eat it, but believe me, once you have it like this, you won't want it any other way. I'm not a big fan of the ridiculously overrated Dog House Grill to begin with, I've always preferred home-made tri-tip. But really, this is BETTER than home-made because of all the effort that's put into making this sandwich great. They must have a meat-slicer to get cuts this thin, and yeah, it makes a BIG difference. I've driven past this place so many times going back to when it was a simple locksmith kiosk. The few times I tried to eat here before they happened to be closed, which brings me to the only thing I can really knock the place on- I wish they were open later. Seriously, Mike would make a killing if he ever wanted to do this- there's even a BAR within stumbling distance from his restaurant! I don't know what else to say other than you're right, Matt P. It was your review that changed my passing curiosity of Mike's Grill into a "must try" for me. My only regret is that it's taken me this long to finally get there.

Ok, people keep comparing this place to Dog House Grill. BOTH are GREAT to me. Mike's is an AWESOME CHANGE! My favorite part of my meal was the bread! Everyone talks about the meat but the bread made the sandwich for me. Great flavor, awesome comb meals. Highly recommend to EVERYONE!

Yaaaaaaaaa. So... we order our food. Husband got the jumbo tri tip, side of chili. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, side of garlic bread. The guy taking the order wasn't the friendliest of people. No Hi, how are ya. No conversation to speak of at all. Just kinda... what do you want. Ok. It's this much. Ok it will be a few minutes. The tri tip meat itself was perfect. It had a wonderful flavor and was juicy and tender. There was, however, nothing jumbo about that sandwich. It had about as much meat, or maybe a little less, than a classic fair tri tip sandwich. The side-o-chili was plopped out of a can of Hormell. It's not hard or expensive to make your own. The pulled pork sandwich was good, the bbq sauce was good, but wasn't anything special and wasn't something that I can't get at a hand full of other places. It was good mind you, but not special. The garlic bread is a joke. It's a bun (that you get from Costco) with butter on it, and maybe at some point it passed by some garlic... but it certainly didn't have any on it. And yanno, it's all out door seating, which, if the service and/or food was top notch really wouldn't be a problem. But it's not. For two sandwiches, two "sides" and two sodas, it came out to a little over $20. For the size and quality of everything, I personally won't be paying that again.

Mike's is awesome. My first time there, he suggested I try the tri-tip sandwich. I ordered the jumbo and some ribs to go. The sandwich and BBQ sauce were seriously the best I've ever paid for. I tried the ribs later on that day--they were good but the tri-tip was so much better. Since then I've decided that the pulled-pork sandwich is actually my favorite item. I've probably bought over 2 dozen sandwiches in the last three weeks so that people at work could try them.

I must update this review, BEST BBQ EVER, EVER, EVER!!! Within a week or so of the first review, I stopped and got more food. Tried the BBQ chicken. It was just delicious! Sadly, I was not hungry enough to grab a rack of ribs, my absolute favorite. My wife, who absolutely HATES bbq chicken, specifically, brown meat, saw that I had 2 thighs leftover. (How these were overlooked, I cannot explain, a huge oversight on my part!) But, anyways, she was starving, and decided to try them. Wifey Poo now LOVES bbq chicken, specifically thighs. I will keep her happy by going and getting her some more, because she's got a hankering for more of, and I am quoting, "the best stinkin' chicken I have ever had!" 2 Weeks Later...... Visited again, tried the ribs. Wow! So great I almost cried. Such smokey flavor. When I called my wife, and said the ribs were so fantastic, for the dozenth time, she mentioned that I may need to go lie down until I could be coherent again. 1 Week Later.... Today I suggested Mike's Grill to my coworkers, offering to go pick it up. I have been nominated to become the President of the company!

My brother was raving about this place so long we had to stop for lunch. It's a small stand. You order, pick up your food and can either take it to go or eat it on the tables setup outside under the tent. The tri-tip was moist and not seasoned. And the bread was soft and a bit toasted. Yummy! My favorite thing was the BBQ sauce they gave us on the side ! For sure the best tri-tip sandwich I have ever had. And my choice of protein is chicken, but I would make the drive out there on a hot summer day for this as a lunch option. The only thing is , it's hot outside and although they have a nice tent set up for you to enjoy your meal under. It's best just to take it to go! Heads up.

I finally had Mike's! I had a tri-tip sandwich of course with their potato salad. It all was delicious! However, the seating isn't. My friend and I went on a pretty warm day and their were flies constantly swarming our food and faces. It was incredibly annoying. I don't know how they can fix that problem, but definitely should think of something! Obviously could get it to go next time, but if I'm meeting a friend, not an ideal situation.

I really hate lowering 5 star reviews, but I feel I must. Over the last couple years, I haven't went to Mike's on a regular basis, as I wasn't in the general area. Now over the last year or two I am in the area more often, so I have stopped a few times off and on. The food is still good, but it seems like something has changed. The food just is not as outstanding as it once was. The main thing I have noticed is the price increases over the last few years. The tri-tip prices have raised by several dollars. I was a little shocked at the price of just a jumbo tri-tip to be $10. The sandwich was not as jumbo as it used to be, and for the price I was rather let down. As small as the jumbo sandwich was, I hate to see the size of the normal one. $25 got me a hot link sandwich, a jumbo tri-tip sandwich and a medium chili beans. It was not worth the price. I totally understand the cost of meat has went up, but the for $10 they should make it a combo or something. I probably won't be back anytime soon. For $25 I'll just buy a tri tip and cook it myself. Also check your bag before leaving. While I was there today, they seriously handed a woman an empty bag. She got to her car and came walking back saying "I thought my bag felt light". It was a good thing she checked the bag before leaving. I would have been really pissed over that.

Just tried the tri tip sandwich a few days ago. Was pretty good. I would say if you compare it to DHG, it tastes better. DHG has about 3x the meat though. Fast service. Will come back to try some more things on the menu.

It does the job, meat more on the salty side but something different if you're tired of the carnival of people at DHG (Dog House Grill). The place is outdoor so if you a pansy boy or girl then you won't enjoy the outdoor seating of the elements. Kinda pricey, almost same price as other places but it is better than some. I don't think is the BEST place is Fresno, it is certainly up there in the top 5 in the city but doesn't take top spot. I am not biased or a bandwagon jumper but to me and the family DHG is still the best as in price, size and taste. I just despise the parking spots and the College kids plugging up the restaurant. The beans and the macaroni salad were on point tho, they added that extra kick of flavor to the sandwiches. Meat was a little salty but certainly tasted the smoky flavor and that is good. Service was whatevers, cooks were like the, "hurry up and buy" type. I rate this place 3.0

All I can say is two words. AMAZING SANDWICH. 100% recommend!

Smelled this place as I pulled into the lot; they had their smoker going. Decided to try it after hearing good things. I got the half-rack of ribs and would've gotten potato salad, but a sign is posted stating they had a recent fire and didn't have many of their sides available. The ribs were pork (Doghouse's are beef, so I get ticked off at the constant comparisons on here) and melt-in-your-mouth tender. The rub was delicious, and the sauce tastes like store-bought KC Masterpiece. I sat on a stool by the walk-up window as if the place was Rally's, and the guy brought my food out the back door to me. Good service. Food was nice, too.

Was on a road trip when we decided to stop by this place after seeing the reviews on yelp. To be honest when we saw it's location (little stand in the middle of the parking lot), we (BF and I) were a little hesitant to try but I'm so happy we did!! We had the tri tip and the pulled pork sandwiches, and they were scrumptious!! Pulled pork sauce had just the right amount of sweet & smokey.

I always passed by Mike's grill but never tried until I saw a long line one day. The lady in front of me recommended tri tip sandwich. I also ordered their back rib and both were just ok. Nothing was special. I still want to try their pulled pork sandwich though.......

Stopped by for a pound of tri-tip and some pilaf. Pilaf is a bit oily, but everything was delicious!

  • Sarah O.

This place is yum!! Great tasty sauce, toasty bread, perfectly cooked tender tri tip and pulled pork sandwiches. The macaroni salad and potato salads have similar flavors, but still both good. My husband and I agree that we like Mike's better than Westwoods, Watt's, Dog House or Dickie's.

Have always heard how great this place was.....well, uhmmmm....sorry to say, NOT....Ordered the "BIG" tri-tip sandwich(supposedly more meat)... just more expensive and far less meat than Doghouse...sandwich roll was literally smashed flat and folded over when they wrapped it...requested a spicy bbq or hot sauce....response: "uhmm, we have jalapeños"....table seating in parking on asphalt on broken down chairs & cardtables that literally almost collapsed when u put your drink on them...TIP: spring for some new ones bro...wont be back anytime soon

This is my second time to visit here. This time I have tri tip sandwich and macaroni salad. It's bomb !!! Defiantly will come back and try other food next time.

Moist and perfectly cooked $9.30 tri-tip sandwich served with the best garlic bread buns in between this decadent and mouth watering beef, not smothered with BBQ sauce which is great. The flavor of the tri-tip was great, but the only negative it was very salty, which I hope could be improved. Overall the meal was pleasant and the prices isn't too bad. This place is more of a to-go place not a place to sit down and eat.

  • C L.

Pork ribs were smoked to the point of tasting like powder. Not yummy at all. The three stars are for their drinks--I liked the shaved ice, they let me have two flavors, and they give free refills on drinks!!

  • Phatalie J.

This review is for the tri-tip sandwich only. I have not had anything else from Mike's. Good god, the sandwich was basically a salt lick. I could not believe how unbearably salty the meat was. It was borderline inedible.

Well, it was about time I found out what all the hype was about. I highly suggest that if you're interested in trying this place out, go during lunch time while the meat is fresh from the smoker. There's a small area for you to eat on the left side of the building; it's covered by a tarp with a few tables and chairs under it. I must say that their "Jumbo" Tri Tip Sandwich is not exactly the "jumbo" I had in mind. Their jumbo is the size of the French rolls used for the banh mi at Huong Lan. Of course, before I took a bite out of it, I had to see how thick the slices were. Eight thick reasonably thick slices (yes, I counted) between the grasp of a slightly soaked toasted garlic roll. You could get a combo that includes your choice of a side and drink for a little under $2 added to your order. Each tri tip sandwich comes with BBQ sauce, but the tri-tip is flavorful enough that you don't really need it. The smokey flavor was not as strong as I was hoping for, though. Mike's Grill offers ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, and hot link sandwiches. I noticed that someone posted a photo of rib tips; it would be nice to see rib tips offered separately on the menu. Overall, I don't mind coming here more often. *NOTE: I went here on Friday; I just posted this today.

Stumbled upon this place trying to look for something new. Came by around 1230 for lunch, and ordered a hot link sandwich and mac & cheese. They were out of mac & cheese and potato salad. They open at 11, so it was probably due to inefficient planning on their part (they hadn't made it yet). $6+ was a bit much to pay for the small sandwich I received, adding a drink and side was another $2. The sandwich alone did not fill me up, although I enjoyed it while it lasted.

  • Marc M.

I had their tri-tip a couple of times while I was at San Joaquin Valley Rehab (because ANYTHING is better than hospital food), and the inevitable comparison will be with Dog House Grill. While the tri-tip isn't bad by any means, it was just a step below Dog House in every aspect. Didn't really have/try any of the sides, so I can't comment on that. All in all, it's serviceable, but if I have a craving for tri-tip, I'll opt for Dog House instead.

  • Jeff T.

Despite more BBQ places finding their way in Fresno, Mike's still delivers the best tri-tip in town. The garlic bread is the perfect addition to the fresh, tender steak inside. Mike's is my favorite place to grab a quality bite when I don't have a lot of time, and it never disappoints.

  • Dang N.

The BBQ here is really solid. Super good. Would definitely make this a regular spot if I wan't trying to cut back on all my meats. Tried the ribs and a trip tip sandwich and liked them both a lot.

The best tri tip in california I'll say it everyday till I'm dead and gone thats how great they are don't believe me try it and then convince there not lol

  • Drew A.

When people say that this is the best tri tip in Fresno they are not joking. Tender, flavorful meat on a garlic bread roll. Perfectly seasoned and paired with an excellent bbq sauce. The sides are a bit lacking, although the macaroni salad stands apart from the rest. Also, the new shaved ice is the template from which all shaved ice should originate. perfectly shaved ice (no chunks or pieces even as large as a slush puppy) and syrup that is amazing and doesn't turn bitter. Do yourself a favor and get one, you won't be sorry.

  • Steven P.

It's alright. Nothing fantastic. Sliced meat stuffed in bread and BBQ sauce in a small plastic container is actually a little disappointing. Also, 2 sandwiches for almost 20 dollars seems a little high for me to get that at a sandwich stand.

    (3)
  • Priscilla Denise G.

One of the best tri trip sandwiches I have had in a while. really good BBQ sauce. the rice pilaf was so good and buttery. the bread was really good as well. I would like to try the potato salad next time. I would recommend for everyone to try it once. go with the jumbo size, you wont regret it. its well worth every penny you spent.

Finds like this are the reason I yelp. Mike's Grill is a tiny shack in the middle of a parking lot, and the only seating consists of a few outdoor lawn chairs underneath a camping-style pop up canopy. But when you're selling food this good, it's ok if ambiance takes an obvious back seat. The tri tip sandwich really is great, and the BBQ sauce is delicious. The meat is tender and the bread is perfectly toasted with a soft, buttery flavor. I definitely wouldn't go so far as to say it's the best sandwich or the best BBQ I've ever had, but it is an incredibly unique experience that was far and away the best meal I had while spending a week in the Fresno area. A must visit.

True bbq! One of my favorite places to go for a tri tip sandwich. The ribs are really tasty too but they're a total smokey gut bomb...but worth it.

  • Eric U.

This is the best barbecue in town hands down. It may not be your conventional restaurant, but Holy Smokes! Instead of having all the overhead of a sit down restaurant, these guys completely focus on perfecting their barbecue at a very reasonable price. If you want to sit down and eat, there is an area to do so with tables, chairs, and an awning. Great staff and the owner Mike checks in with his customers when he's there. It's very personal and a "Mom and Pop" establishment. Do yourself a favor and try this place!

    (5)
  • Dustin F.

Needs more meat for the price! I can get a whole Tri-Tip for $9 bucks. It was flavorful though and the sides were good. Good service.

    (3)
  • Joshua S.

Had the Tri-Tip sandwich. It was very good. The bread was toasted with what seemed to be butter and garlic. The meat was tender with a good amount of smoke. Its up there with Dog House...I wouldn't say better than though.

  • Cat R.

Great BBQ! Awesome tri tip sandwiches and tasty pulled pork. Hefty servings too! My favorite though are the chili beans and the garlic bread! Excellent! No 5 stars just cuz it is only located outside and when it's freezing or 110 outside, it's kinda uncomfortable but oh well! Definitely will be back!

Best tri tip in town! I'm a huge fan of Dog House, but Mike's deserves the top-dog award.

  • Mark K.

Found this place due to Yelp. My brother and I ordered the full rack of ribs and the large tri-tip, and a side of baked beans. WE both agreed, the tri-tip was ok but the ribs were some of the best we ever had, and we both say barbequed ribs are our favorite food. The beans were right up there with best-we-ever-had status. So we think, based on what Yelpers are saying, that some days the tri-tip is better and some days the ribs are better. The service was top-notch as both the guy taking our order and the cook were super-helpful, friendly and patient. The cook actually came outside to the tables and asked people how they liked their barbeque. Everyone raved. The only reason for knocking off one star is this: This is a small shack in a parking lot, much like those shack-style drive-through coffee stops you see in parking lots. The only seating is some VERY rickety card tables and cheap card-table chairs under a couple of pop-up canvas canopies. This forces you to make a choice. Take the hot barbeque home, letting it cool on the way (while your tri-tip sandwich gets soggy) or sit and eat in a parking lot - and deal with the flies, which were slightly annoying but not overpowering. We took the parking lot option as we were going somewhere afterward.

They have Very good tri tip sandwich. Definitely Better than most places out there . Sides are great also.

  • Raylene T.

I would not have stopped at this place if it wasn't for the good reviews on Yelp and through word of mouth. There is no indoor seating. It is just a little drive-thru shack with some stools and little tables and chairs outside. But, the food is DELICIOUS! I had the tri-tip sandwich (regular size) and pilaf.

    (4)
  • Mandy E.

The meat is clearly the star here. My husband and I each tried the tri-tip sandwiches (his was a jumbo), and they were great! Salty and smoky, and tasty even without the BBQ sauce. There was a good amount of meat for the price, and the jumbo had like TWICE the meat of the regular (which was already a good meat ratio). Gonna branch out to the pulled pork next time, but this place is a winner!

    (5)
  • Austin B.

This place is by far one of my favorite tritip sandwhich places. With it being a great place to pick up lunch so close to home while also not ever experiencing much of a wait, I usually find myself going here rather than its competitor Dog House which many people compare it to.

  • Sheila C.

This is a little hut spot on Cedar between First and Escalon in the Cedar Tree shopping center....well technically it is right on the entrance of said shopping center. I could care less about the location (although it is close to me) and the size because the food is good. My go to? Tri-Tip sandwich and I have never been disappointed. I fear I have never tried anything else, but why would I when I know what I like and they deliver it properly every time? Everyone I have taken here has liked the food, its fairly cheap but doesn't taste as such. Definitely worth your time.

  • John B.

5 star tri tip in a 2 star environment. Great, garlicky, moderately smoky tri-tip. Tons of meat on the jumbo. Flavorful. Perfectly cooked (although my contrarian mother-in-law proclaimed it "over baked"). I didn't even notice they didn't have fries - but my kids probably did... If I were a local and could take the sandwich home (or to the office), this would be a slam-dunk 5 star. But as a traveller passing through I had to eat my delicious sandwich on a dirty card table in a hot parking lot while shooing flies away. To go to the bathroom, I skulked into the asian market in the same complex.

Great tri-tip sandwich on a toasted garlic buttered roll with an optional tasty BBQ sauce. Simple ingredients, simple menu, and well prepared fare offered at a very reasonable price and fast service. Doesn't get any better than this.

Favorite tritip place by far. Has that nice moist and juicy flavor. They give you plenty of meat. And no horrible crowds or parking like doghouse.

    (5)
  • Amanda H.

I would love to give it a five, but -1 is for their lack of French fries. Paul says it's the best in town (& he's tried it all). They have outdoor seating in the parking lot, but it's better to get it to go.. They have ribs too. They're good but not the best.

    (4)

I experienced Mike's catering at a graduation party. Amazing food! I'm a healthy eater and I went for seconds!

    (5)
  • T C.

I tried the tri tip sandwich and it was good. I didn't care for the rice pilaf. Almost every bite I took had crunchy rice. If you are looking for a fast place to eat on your lunch hour this is good. It's a small place you walk up to and order. They have tables outside for you to sit too.

    (4)
  • Davong X.

The brisket was cooked okay except that the garlic just overpowered the meat. Portion size was a little small for a sandwich. Try it out for yourself.

Mike's claim is "Best Tri-tip Sandwich in Town". Sorry to say Mike that I have had it and it's not. Well, I have to rate the overall experience.. As for the Tri-Tip ($7.25) it was "OK" ...3 stars. The smoke flavor was there and there was enough meat, but the meat was a bit dry, I have had better in Fresno. The BBQ sauce that was provided on the side was "OK" also but not as good as I have experienced in Fresno. I also ordered a side of garlic toast ($1.69) and wish I had not because it was just the same as the bread used on the sandwich. Where the 1 star comes into play is the fact that when eating outside, you have to put up with all the files. I had to throw some of the bread away because of the successful touch down's on it from the flies. "They" delivered my sandwich outside and saw that I was sitting at a table, but never came out to ask if everything was ok. Would not go back.

    (2)
  • Ashley L.

The tri-tip sandwich is delicious! The best I've had! You def get your money's worth with how much meat they give you. I split the sandwich with my mom. Have was plenty! I also had the chili beans. It went perfect with the sandwich and hit the spot! Very pleased! Will definitely be back!

    (5)
  • Joe N.

This is a stand alone spot where you sit outside. Set up something like a taco stand. The tri-tip sandwiches were good and tender. The side of beans were really good. Overall their tri-tip sandwiches are NOT better than Dod House. I recommend that you try it but if you want the best tri-tip sandwiches in Fresno, go to Dog House Grill.

    (3)
  • B W.

The tri-tip sandwich was good in a no-frills, straightforward, meat on a piece of bread way. For the price you really cannot complain too much considering the portion. However, either the meat rub or the garlic bread was entirely way too salty and I was disappointed that it tinged the overall quality of the meal. Also, the BBQ sauce tastes store-bought and so in terms of a legit BBQ place that makes their own sauces, this one falls short.

    (3)
  • Mark A.

Had the Tri-tip sandwich, which was good, however there was only two slices of meat for a $7.99 Sandwich. The Jumbo for $9.99 looked like the size of sandwich I should have gotten. Four of us ate at the same time, and all the sandwiches were identical except for the Jumbo. Come-on guys....don't be so cheap.

    (2)
  • Ashley S.

Mikes has the BEST tri tip sandwich in town. Hands down. Many love Dog House, but I guarantee Mikes is more tender and flavorful. No need to add bbq sauce. Get it with a side of pilaf which is made with the meat drippings. OMG.

    (5)
  • Michael F.

I eat here at least twice a week, the tritip sandwich is excellent. Staff is always friendly and give quick service.

    (5)
  • Omar F.

No way that's the best tri tip in town. I also made the mistake of ordering the potato salad.

    (3)
  • david p.

I always thought it was a coffee kiosk so I actually looked at the sign and saw it was a grill. Had a trip tip slider and it wasn't bad, pretty tasty. The potato salad didn't lyrics really knock my socks off, but I added a smidge of their BBQ sauce to it to liven it up. I would definitely go again if I'm ever in the North of Herndon area.

  • Celestine V.

As a pescatarian, my rule is I eat meat if I want on vacation, or maybe once a month. This was my meat day. I was CRAVING some tri tip, and let me tell you, this is THE place to go in Fresno. It's a bit more on the expensive side but this tri tip was incredibly juicy, their bbq sauce was slightly sweet, served on a garlic bread bun, and the pilaf was magnificent. And if you're craving a sno cone for the heck of it, they have really big ones here. It's pretty much a hole in the wall, but it is easily the best around. Edit: I feel compelled to bring this rating down one star after today. This place is still amazing, their food is just as good as before, but after further consideration, I like to give a review for the whole place. Mostly, that last star goes away for the amount of flies that constantly seem to plague this place. I sincerely hope these guys get a real place someday, and when they do, they'll be a shoe in for that fifth star. So if you're going out to eat, this isn't really the place, but if you're gonna grab and go, this is definitely the best choice.

    (4)
  • Mike S.

Hmm. The tritip sandwich was decent. Not worth the price considering the venue. The prices need to drop about 20%. The idea of a roadside/walkup type situation should ideally be that you are sacrificing not having a nice restaurant in exchange for better prices.

    (3)
  • Abe S.

Food was good. Tender tri tip sandwich with a forgettable barbecue sauce. Shaved ice was good the only reason I'm giving this hole in the wall a one star review is solely based on the customer experience. It's happened twice and I'm no longer returning due to this. We were the only customers and the gentleman in the booth is just not warm, friendly, or at all attentive. He makes you feel ashamed to be there and to even ask for an order adjustment. I hate interacting with him and he wasn't even busy. I get you're at a hot box drive thru but do not be completely distant and blatantly rude to your customers. Never again.

Beats Doghouse on everything but the flat screens. At this rate it's only a matter of time until they're known all over Fresno. BBQ Tri-tip sando was awesome, garlic bread and a cup of sauce made it a perfect Saturday afternoon lunch. Staff was friendly and fast, nice guys. Keep on it Mike!

  • Talia H.

If you like doghouse you need to ditch the crowd and give this place a try. The tritip is amazing...melts in your mouth everytime!

  • Brian W.

Amazing tri-tip sandwiches! Best in town! Mike loves his BBQ, and it shows. No-frills menu, just awesome BBQ smoked to perfection. I love the rolls for the tri-tip sandwich. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and brushed with olive oil.

    (5)
  • Dustin C.

Finally had the chance to make it over to Mikes Grill and was not disappointed at all. My girlfriend and I both ordered the tritip combo, (I got the pilaf side and she got the macaroni salad), both were really good. I love the fact that they put the sauce on the side and not smother it on the meat so you can't taste anything but sauce, although the sauce is delicious. Service was great and food came out very fast and correct! Can't wait to go back and try the ribs next time! Keep up the great BBQ!

    (5)
  • Chelsea D.

Great customer service!!! Tri tip sandwhices are probably best in town!!! They get your food out fast. It's definitely a great lunch place to eat!!! I recommend this place if u want seething fast and good! Prices are also fair!

  • Scott R.

I am a tri tip connoisseur of sorts. And can I just tell you that this place knocks it out of the park! The tri tip is tender, smoky and stack high on a perfect roll. The bbq sauce is served on the side, and dipping is a must because this sauce sets off the taste of the meat perfectly. If you're not already driving here right now, you've made a terrible mistake and I pitty you

  • Liz P.

Hands down, best tri-tip in town! One of my favorite places to grab a bite. Location does have some tables and chairs but I prefer to take it to go since Fresno is so darn hot. The wings are also very yummy, so yummy that once my dog got to them before I did. Couldn't even blame him, I would have totally done the same!

    (5)
  • Sam R.

I loved everything about it. Honestly the food was so delicious. I don't have much of an appetite so I got the tri-tip slider sandwich with pilaf and it was soooo yummy. I loved the smoke flavor of the meat and I know I'm gonna be craving that BBQ sauce that came with the sandwich! Definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a quick lunch stop!!!!!

    (5)
  • Mark A.

If you drive by the strip mall you might miss this small shack on the side. I went with the Tritip sandwich and it was very good. The smokiness was there and cooked perfectly. They certainly do this well. Only complaint is if you eat it there underneath the makeshift seating area is prepare to battle the flies. If they could minimize this would be great. Worth a shot to try for sure though.

Tied for best I've ever had. The tri tip is amazing and the pulled pork is a close second. The vinegar coleslaw is great and unique for the area.

Best tri tip you will EVER eat! The rice pilaf is great too. The BBQ sauce is on point. Ribs are a must try. If it's your first time, get the tri tip.

I've heard about this place for years. Never took the time to stop and try it. Well today was the day and I'm happy I did. Tri tip is moist and has good flavor. Good eats.

Really is the best tri tip in town. The bbq sauce, seasoned bread, and tender, tasty meat is so good. I know it's a keeper when I keep coming back.

This is one of those moments where you wish you could give half stars. I thought long and hard about whether to give 4 stars and explain how it is really better than 4 stars or give 5 and talk about how it is not perfect. I so seldom give anything 5 stars because there are so few places that come anywhere near perfection. I walked into this one with a lot of skepticism. "Best Tri-tip in Fresno" is a BOLD statement. This (general) part of the country is known for its tri-tip. In fact, when talking about great meat, there aren't a lot of other things we are known for. Texas can keep their brisket and the South might make great BBQ but here we make tri-tip. I'm getting a little off topic here. The sandwich was great. The service was great. The tri-tip was really great. I made a list of the things that detract from your dining experience but there is little to no reason for me to talk about it. Most of it was the run-of-the-mill stuff you expect with a little shack of a restaurant like this. (flys, no bathrooms, only outdoor seating, etc.) I was totally ready to give 4 stars but I just kept thinking about that sandwich. The meat was perfect. The bread was perfect. Great flavor. When I first unwrapped the sandwich, it looked a little limp and unimpressive. But then I ate it. It didn't need the BBQ sauce but I added some to the second half just to mix it up. It was GREAT with and without the sauce! I wish this place was open late and I really wish they had French fries but every time I think about the reasons to only give 4 stars I just start thinking about that sandwich. It's REALLY GOOD.

Ummm one word, AWESOME!! Family ordered Jumbo tri tip combo and 1/2 pork rack!!!! Sides were garlic bread and chili beans...we were in HEAVEN!!! Everything was tender and juicy. Their bbq sauce was like crack!!!!! If you never went there, please give them a try...support local own businesses!!!!!!!!!!!!

This placed lived up to the reviews. Had the jumbo tri-tip sandwich and it was fantastic and pretty affordable. There were old time regulars who were in line buying up Tri-tip sandwiches like crazy. Great place. Definitely recommend.

This place is a simple BBQ joint. Nothing fancy but the food was delicious. I expected a building but this place is just a grill with a shack to prepare the food. There is seating outside with shade. I felt the outdoors seating really highlighted the food. I ordered the tri tip sandwich. It was tender and juicy, served on garlic bread which gave it some saltiness. A solid place to grab a quick lunch in an hour gap. Great service with a humble stand serving food.

I frequent this place whenever I'm down in Fresno. Its located in the middle of a parking lot. Since I have the kids with me its a great place to park, order food, and eat in the car. Also, what's convenient is that there's a McDonalds in the same plaza, so I grab food for the kids there while we eat here. I always order the trip tip sandwich and if your a first timer its highly recommended. The bbq sauce that accompanies it is really good. I wish they give a little bit more of it. A must place visit to try out if your in the Fresno area.

Underwhelmed here. Why did not my tri-tip sandwich look anything like the ones in the pictures posted? Do the stars need to align? Right day, right cook, right staff? Maybe I need to try it again but my meal wasn't special or notable at all. I too found it to be dry and skimpy on the meat. My urge wasn't filled and I left thinking I'd never be back. Folks were nice enough... -G

Great try tip sandwich but it still takes second place in Fresno to Doghouse Grill. Super nice guy. Every side that we have tried there has been decent. The one area that Mike has doghouse beat is quickness.

I have been driving past Mike's Grill for the past 2 years. Last month I finally got the urge to stop and try something. Ordered the jumbo tri tip sandwich combo and also a half rack of ribs. The tri tip sandwich was awesome. It's better when you dip it in the BBQ sauce that it comes with. The bread is the same as their garlic bread. The rib was even better. You can pull the meat right off the bone. I have been there at least 5 times since the first visit. The tri tip was still good as ever. My only disappointment is that the size of the BBQ sauce is now smaller. Also somehow the rack of rib is not the same. The first time I visited, Mike was there to meet and greet us. Maybe the skills of his two other helpers on the grill are not as good with the ribs. Prices are okay. Rib prices did go up. But overall, one of the best tri tip sandwiches I have had in Fresno hands down. Visited Mike's Grill again on 11-5-11. The tri tip sandwich never disappoint. I asked to see if they charged for extra cups of BBQ and they said no. Tri tip tastes even better when you have enough BBQ sauce to dip it in. Awesome!

Sorry...didn't do it for me. Tri-Tip sandwich and beans was ordered, sandwich wise starting with the bread which would have been acceptable except for the overwhelming garlic taste, why does a tri-tip sandwich need to be on garlic bread? I like the fact that it was toasted but hell I ate that sandwich an hour ago and have brushed and flossed and still taste the garlic! On to the meat...meat to roll ratio not good, 50% more meat is needed for that size of roll. Taste wise I hate to say it but am I missing something here...seemed rather bland, not the "wow!" taste I was expecting, just not much there flavor wise. Beans...please accept my apologies in advance. Did we open up a #10 can of Hormel beans, brown off some ground beef and combine. Again bland land appeared, if you're going to serve beans they've got to be simply outrageously good or just don't do it. Last observation...Flies everywhere and tent seating area not clean, food remnants on floor and tables. Booth/kiosk tents folding chairs can still and must be clinically clean at all times.

If you have been searching for a great BBQ spot with great food and good prices, head on down to Mikes. If you have only been Ho-Hum about BBQ, Mikes grill will make you a believer in smoke. Excellent tri tip; one of the best pulled pork sandwiches I have ever eaten! I hope they can keep up with their quality as their customer numbers grow. Beans a little spicey for my wife, just about right for me, but could have more depth of flavor. Cole slaw good. Ambiance -0-. Let's face it - it is only a take out spot. The outside seating is seldom adequate In this climate - too hot with flies in summer, too cold & damp in winter. Maybe the small in between times would be okay. Service is fairly fast unless there is a long line. Allow a little extra time there. Summary- 4 stars for food only. Take it home to enjoy there.

Very dry tri tip. Good ribs but for an unworthy price. I'd prefer it if a place that took so long to provide you their food was at least making it fresh. I understand the arduous task of smoking meat, but for it to come out dry or requiring and @$$load of BBQ sauce. Get with it, mon! I do miss Allee Brand BBQ!

Best tri-tip in town! The meat is smoked and they let the tri-tip stand for itself, (you can add BBQ sauce) so its not pre-smothered in BBQ sauce like Dog House. If you like tri-tip, eat here; you won't be disappointed.

I drive bye this place every week when I work in the area, the smell is makes you hungry and draws you in. Finally stopped by and grabbed a TriTip sandwich, they clam to be the best, its very good but top 5 for sure in my book. The guy that was working was by him self and he was pretty busy, he was very nice and worked very fast, all the orders were spot on. This is a must try place and I will be back.

Outdoor seating. It was worth the dollar extra for the extra meat. Meet tasted very good. Pulled pork sandwich was good sauce was a tad bit spicy. We asked for the slaw on the side and they forgot to give it to us. They forgot to give us our drink as well. I gave it a four because it is hard to find a good tri tip sandwich. My husband and I are tri-tip connoisseurs and we preferred the Santa Maria style over the slow cooked style. Overall it was worth getting off the freeway for lunch.

Doghouse has nothing on this place. My first time here, and I will be returning very soon.

How to find it: A food stand at the corner entrance of a shopping plaza. Has tables/chairs set up outside under a tent. Thankfully there was a light breeze on this hot 80 some degree day that we tried this for lunch. Trip Tip Combo: Soda, Chips, Jumbo Tri-Tip Sandwich for $12(?). Savory slices of tri-tip with soft baguette (?) bread. PRovided a side of BBQ sauce which I wish they gave us more of.

Bang for buck. Place is actually a little shack and took me a few minutes to find it. At first I was unsure of the high rating but was proven wrong. Amazing tri tip sandwich with two side of equally good beans and rice. The sandwich bread is actually garlic bread hugging some amazing beef. Another great find on Yelp in a area I know very little about.

We stopped here on our way to Yosemite last week and I am so glad we did! The place is a little shack where you order from outside and sit on some chairs to enjoy your meal. I had the Hot Link & The Tri Tip sandwhich with rice & beans/chili for the sides. I loved the rice & beans! Great taste! Sandwhiches were very good. You can taste the freshness of the meat. The bread is coated with garlic which adds to the taste...who doesn't like garlic on toasted bread?!?! I wish this place was close to me because I'd go every weekend!
