I have to make a shoutout to our waitress, Krystal. She went above and beyond serving us. The workers here have been friendly, making it a pleasant experience. I love the chicken kelaguen and tortilla chips & the light salad with popcorn chicken. The sushi was unique and tasty! ***Hi Christine!

Ono's Restaurant and Cafe in Bonita, reminds me when I was in Honolulu, Hawaii. Their menu is a mixed of Hawaiian, Korean, and Japanese cuisine. The food is great for reasonable price. The place is a warm cozy place and very quiet since it's kind a sits far away from the street. That's why it may be hard to find unless you've been there before. We had to drive around the huge parking lot to finally see the place. The price is very affordable and you also order to go. And yes, I was given 50% off for dessert fir checking in.

Sushi is good. Beef sliders are my favorite. Place needs a remodel. Price is fair. Kid friendly.

Very good and nice variety. Drove all the way from Encinitas and well worth the drive. For hubbi the beers is good too. Its ONOS.

Ordered Ramen and it was all watered down, didn't have any flavor at all. Tried to find the waiter for 5min. We asked for extra flavor and they decided to re make the whole thing, waited 25 min and they just completely ruined our appetite.. Never coming back here again!

I stopped in Ono's on a early Friday evening on the onset of happy hour to unwind and grab a few eats before heading home. I ordered a pint of Kirin draft beer for only $3, but the beer was a little flat. The temp was nice and cold but it was time to switch the barrel. For eats, I had the salmon skin roll at happy hour price of $3.50 and Jalapeno Hamachi of the regular menu for $8. The salmon skin roll was good. It was nicely presented, a little sticky, but it came with a good amount of toasted salmon skin which tasted very good. The avocado was very good and the carrot crunchy. Overall, it was a good tasty roll. The Jalapeno Hamachi was good as well and came with a very good. The ponzu sauce was light and flavorful, the lemon wedges were thinly sliced, including the jalapeno slices, and they both provided just enough flavor, to make the Hamachi or yellow tail brim with a vibrant flavor. The jalapeno was not spicy, but just tasty. The eats were good, but I just wish the beer were crisper, not flat, so I am settling for three and a half stars.

Enjoyed an evening with my wife and a full house of customers. Good service and attentive server. Drinks were prompt and good. They served water without request. We had the miso soup and Calamari to start. Both were good in flavor served in 8 minutes. Jumped in on 3 Sushi rolls (spicy tuna, Crunchy, and Dragon). Very good and took about 15 minutes which was about right with a full house. We had the Kalbi ribs, bulgogi fries and Keloguenn chicken. Solid dishes with great flavor. Service time was comfortable. Malasada for desert. It was all good and we would return.

I live near here and finding quality Asian fusion around my neighborhood is difficult. I've had problems with this establishment before, mainly customer service related but this isn't necessarily one of them. I ordered Macademia salmon, panko salmon, and basa grill all to go. Unfortunately the biggest let down was the macademia salmon. Keep in mind the Macademia salmon cost the most out of all 3 dishes. Aside from the small serving size at $17, the salmon was on the dry side and he so called "banana sauce" was spicy. I called the restaurant and whomever took the call said there's a tad bit of spice. I have a seasoned palate and I've eaten wasabi, tons of mexican food and this banana sauce tasted more like sirracha with a hint of banana sauce. The only compensation the lady on the phone could offer was to not order the banana sauce with the macademia salmon again. I've had this dish before and it never had as much heat as it did. Also it's a consistency issue because as I ate more of it there were pockets without as much spice. A customer shouldn't have to guess if the dish is spicy or not because the menu lacks the ability to properly inform the consumer.

We came here not too long ago and it was amazing! I did not expect it to be that good. The ambience is very appealing. The interior is cute and decorated, more of a Hawaiian theme. It's not too noisy and not too quiet which I enjoyed. We made the right choice of ordering the calamari and Kalbi Ribs. The calamari was very crunchy! My personal favorite was the Kalbi Ribs which came with rice and salad on the side. The ribs were chewy but easy to eat. It was just so delicious. Prices are decent, a little more to the expensive side. But that's okay, you pay for the quality of the food. Service was great. The servers were friendly and catered to our needs. I would definitely recommend this place.

Cali Love roll - awesome and was my fav Yin Yang - something about it tasted fishy - no sh*t ... it has fish, but it didn't taste fresh to me. Service was a bit slow when we came here around 8pm on a Friday night.

  • Carly M.

Nice atmosphere, but noticed it was quite slow for a Friday. But as we sipped our wine we started to notice how HOT it was in there...asked the server about it and he told us their ac was stolen? Really killed the vibe. After a few drinks it was WAY too warm. Fly's were too frequent, had to send back a drink because one died in it.. Food was good, the Bonita roll was very yummy. I got the seafood dynamite. Not the best, quite a dry dish. Pretty disappointing because the ingredients sounded promising. Mom got the panko salmon, the breading was yummy and the side of coleslaw was quite good, but the fish itself was flavorless. Creme brullee was delicious, but it was served bare, no strawberries. Poor presentation. Overall, just OK.

Yelp tricked me Maybe my spoiled taste buds are so used to better but even then, I'm not so much a picky eater. First time here & I'm not sure I would even return. The hubby and I ordered 5 rolls total and malasadas. (Sandy's Beach Roll, Philadelphia Roll, So Cal Roll, Rainbow &Sunshine) All the rolls were pretty small for a specialty roll.. but I was fine with it since I guess we came during happy hour so all our rolls was $8 &under except for the sunshine roll. The sushi did not taste fresh at all. The smoked tuna in the Philly roll was oversmoked! Even the green onions on the Sandy roll was dried.. I asked for spicy mayo &when brought out it was pretty warm, so I tasted just a little &it was sour! Thank you for bringing it out upon request, but no thank you! Service wise, they weren't as attentive as expected from a 4 star place.. the rolls took forever to come out. There was a waitress from another area that helped us out more than our own waiter. Our drinks remained unfilled, which did not help with the dry rice. The malasadas were the only good thing I got out of my experience. So, Ono, I'm sorry but 2 stars for your slow service for your less than mediocre sushi..

Asian and island fusion cuisine with a twist. Decor and music goes well with the theme in a tasteful manner and the food is delicious. I usually get the calamari, teriyaki beef sliders (served on sweet Hawaiian bread & with a side of sweet potato fries-fave), various rolls and malasadas. Happy hour is daily from 4-7pm & brunch hours are Saturday and Sunday from 9-12pm. Wait might be a bit because they don't have many servers but all the employees I've encountered are friendly, patient and helpful.

We don't have any Hawaiian fusion restaurants where I'm from and by far this place is quite wonderful. This restaurant is not that big, it does have a patio though and tv's. And an excellent menu. Thus far I've tried.. specials -garlic edamame (very flavorful) -chicken kelaguen w/ chips (i'm not a big fan but my fiance loves them) -bulgogi fries (a favorite/ highly recommended) -kalua pork sliders( comes in 3 very tasty. filling) sushi if you liked baked i suggest the.. -cali love roll -volcano roll Drinks -soju strawberry-mango / lychee(favorite) / mango kiwi (all great) service: so, so. could be better especially when not so busy. Will definitely come back to try more fusion items.

Service is still a bit slow here.. but has improved from my last visit. The place is really small so the waiting area flows into the dinning area. Awkward. Food was spot on though. What we had: *spam musubi (cook even threw in a sample of the upgraded musubi- it was so good.) *stuffed mushrooms *bulgogi fries *pulled pork sliders *Philidelphia roll (love that they use smoked salmon) *teriyaki beef plate Quick Tip: prices are a bit high, so checkout the daily specials and the daily happy hour menus!

My friend recommended this place for brunch on a Saturday morning. I had never heard of it before, and probably wouldn't have as it's in Bonita and I live in central San Diego. However, I am soooo glad I now know of this gem of a brunch spot. The decor and atmosphere take you to Hawaii. Between the carved wooden statues, the artwork, and the island smoothies, you really feel you're on a Hawaiian vacation! This place has both indoor and outdoor seating. It would be great for groups and families as well. The service was friendly and attentive. The food was AMAZING! I had the macadamia nut, banana pancakes with a side of Portuguese sausage. My friends had the berry French toast. I can't decide which one was better. They also have a number of other classic Hawaiian dishes with a Brazilian/Korean twist. Despite the drive, I would absolutely come back for brunch! I also hear their happy hour is a good option!

Great service and food! Nicole was a wonderful server who had a great attitude and was super attentive throughout our entire meal. The appetizer sampler, all of our entrees, and dessert were all delicious! I also loved the wine selection and the fruit hot sake (mango and strawberry recommended!). Everyone in our group of four enjoyed themselves and it was a lovely dining experience. We will be back!

I used to go this place all the time for their happy hour. This place has a great happy hour menu and its a great spot to go to if youre in this area. However, I went on a slow day so maybe my expectations were a little high. We ordered the spam musubi and the bulgogi fries. Its usually very delicious but on this particular day it was off par. They forgot the kimchi and sour cream. For the price, I wasn't impressed because it was smaller than the carne asada fries portion that I could easily go to. They redid our order but the fries were soggy and it felt like the toppings were just quickly put together. However, the other food is still good.

i didn't like what i experienced in this cafe on my last visit. i called for reservation so that we can seat in a booth for my friends birthday. we arrived in this place but all booths were in used. I'm a little upset because i expected that there'll be seat(booth) ready for me,couple kids and my friend but the hostess told me that the just started eating and some of them just ordered. the hostess is not having a good day i guess because she doesn't know how to smile/greet costumers. anyway food is ok but we waited so long for our food. NO AC its too hot.

I decided to go on a random drive around San Diego and ended up here. I came during happy hour so there were some specials. I order spam musubi, dragon roll, and philly roll. I also got the chicken teriyaki pasta which wasn't on the hh menu. The pasta was pretty good. Other than that, the food didn't really stand out to me.

If you see some of my previous reviews, you'll find that I am not generous with compliments. Ono's is more than worthy of my highest rating. The service: excellent. The food quality: Wow! I saw several reviews that said, "mouth-watering". I had not seen that before. Having been at Ono's for the first time, I can only say: "Under-statement". Up until now, my favorite has been Riki Sushi on 30th St. In San Diego. So, now I have two favorites! Try them both. You will not be disappointed. Then, you decide. You, definitely, will not regret it.

My partner had never been here so I decided to take him here for dinner. I've only been here once before for my birthday dinner with my cousins about two years ago. First thing I noticed when we came in was the absence of the big aquarium they used to have in the corner. My partner also commented that he expected the decorations to be more Hawaiian. I would love to see more Hawaiian-related items: surfboards, tiki torches, pineapples, etc. The hostess was very nice and she told us we can sit anywhere we want. As we sat down I noticed the happy hour menu on the table. We still had half an hour left! They have happy hour everyday from 4-7 pm. The menu includes 50% off their basic sushi rolls so we started with a caterpillar and spicy salmon. My partner got a Kirin Ichiban on tap and I got a glass of Cabernet. The sushi rolls were good but nothing spectacular. The rolls were not as firm because of the rice. It seems they used glutinous rice instead of sushi rice. And their soy sauce was little bitter. Maybe the containers were just sitting there and never rinsed when they change the soy sauce? We weren't planning on having big meals so we both decided to try their ramen. My partner ordered the chicken katsu ramen. I'm not exactly sure what the broth was, but when I tried it, it tasted like curry. The chicken katsu tasted...umm....like chicken. It was dry. I ordered the kahlua pork ramen with shoyu broth and it was delicious!!!! Shoyu broth is a clear brown broth based on chicken and vegetable stock with plenty of soy sauce. The resulting soup is tangy and salty yet still light to the palate. And Ono's shoyu broth was right on! I also love how the kahlua pork added a nice smoky flavor. The meat was moist and tender. Our overall experience at Ono's was very good! The service was excellent and prompt and the food was delicious. I definitely plan on coming back and try other things on the menu. The bulgogi fries sound interesting!

The lumpia was amazing I loved it. It was a long but skinny. The teriyaki sliders are great! The teriyaki chicken plate was not the best. The malasadas where not good at all they have a weird taste in them like alcohol was put in them and they have a bad aftertaste to them. The food was between a 3-4 but the service was really slow!

Came here on a Friday with some friends to grab a bite to eat as many other places were particularly busy on this past Good Friday. I am not from the area so I came here on references from my friends and this visit was not the best. We walked into the restaurant to check on the wait and the hostess of whoever the woman was seemed very confused when we simply asked her how long the wait was. She told us 25 minutes which did not seem accurate as there were tables leaving or tables that have not been cleared off. There was one other party ahead of us. As one of the employees slowly cleared off and reset a table right in front of us, another party of about 6 people showed up and waited outside with us. The first party got seated, then the party after us got seated next which was a little frustrating. We were then sat in the back booth by the restroom. Immediately feeling the heat in the restaurant which was very uncomfortable, especially for the night time. We were not handed menus and sat there for about 10 minutes until they finally arrived. We ordered, then the food took about another 30 minutes to come out. Sushi was good but not great and overpriced. Not a pleasant experience here, most likely will not be returning.

I love this place. It's always my go-to place if I'm in the mood for Kalbi ribs! Yummmmy. I also work pretty close by, so the lunch specials are pretty fairly priced. The service is awesome! They have late night happy hour on Wednesdays with super good deals. In 2012, I threw my husband a surprise party for his 30th birthday here, and they were wonderful. They allowed us to have a DJ and the entire outdoor patio to ourselves. The only thing that I don't like is that they have one booth that is a little tooooo close to the bathroom. But every other table and booth is good!

Sad food..... For them to say it's Hawaiian is disrespectful. The service was.....ok its actually the best thing they had. Food tasted like they took it out a package and threw it in a microwave. I personally would never tell friends about this place but what do I know im just sam choy's nephew

I absolutely love the food here, I live close by and come here often. My husband always gets the teriyaki chicken pasta and I'm the one thats more adventurous and try to get something different all the time,I like their bulgogi fries and their creme de la creme sushi roll. We did notice the place is a bit warm and we asked the server the last time we were there about it and she said the building had their AC units stolen and that they were working on replacing them. I Manage restaurants and I can see the complaints about slow service are valid and I have also asked about that, the response was that the servers do everything which people might not understand but I do so I'm going to enlighten some of you. Normal restaurants have the servers and "support staff" that includes a host, bartender, busser and runner of food, at this place theres only 1 person taking the food order, inputting the order, making the drinks, running the food out to the table, clearing any dirty plates from your table and processing your payment. Now multiply this times however many tables they have. I like coming here and would like this business to thrive so if you are willing to forgo the speed of service for some quality food then this is your place.

Multiple times I've returned hoping the service will improve..but unfortunately that hasn't happened.. And more recently we were still dining and the turned off the lights and fans (on one of the hottest and most humid days of the year!!) Slow, slow service, orders forgot, bills with wrong items... We we start having our meets elsewhere

I have never been here until my partner decided to take me out to dinner. I was expecting a Hawaiian theme place, and found that the ambience of that was not presented here. The restaurant had low lighting and was very intimate. They also have outdoor seating, but during the hot summer days i would recommend to eat inside for the AC. Looking on the menu they have a decent amount of different dishes to order from. Although it was not really much of any authenticity, it felt i was eating at a Japanese Restaurant rather than Hawaiian. I expected the place to be full of surf boards, leis, hawaiian girls status or even tiki statues! but none was present here. With not much hunger we both decided to try their ramen. I order the Chicken Katsu Ramen. It was pretty good! it came out nice and hot and the noodles and broth were both delicious. On the other hand the breaded chicken katsu was very dry, i took out the chicken and didnt bother eating it rather just ate the noodles and broth. The waitress was nice and very respectful. They had nice ambience all around and not very much traffic other than us two and a few other tables. it was good but not great in my opinion. My partner told me that they used to have a huge aquarium in the past sadly to see this was no longer here. Overall good exp. and service. The food was decent and Yummy. Will prob return sometime in the near future and i have to try something more Hawaiian. Just i hope they change their decor inside to represent Hawaii more than Japan.

I wanted to try something new today and decided to go with the Teriyaki Chicken Pasta. It was absolutely delicious. The sauce for the pasta is rich and the flavor goes well with the teriyaki chicken. The portion size is large and after my meal I still had leftovers. I ordered their tea rice and the way it was served was unique! It was very interesting to pour my tea.

The lunch (12pm-3pm) and happy hour specials (4pm-7pm) keep me coming back for more. The food is yummy and with the affordable prices I don't feel so bad eating here often. I noticed that a lot of the negative reviews are about their customer service. I've been to Ono's during a rush and a lull and both times I've had a pleasant experience. When it was really busy, I didn't see our waiter as much as when it was slow, but that's expected. The food is really good here so it's not a surprise that this is a place that gets packed during peak hours. If you want to avoid the wait (whether it's for a table or for your food), definitely plan to go for lunch or before 6pm. My usuals: * chicken katsu bowl with extra sauce (served only during lunch) * tempura spam musubi (happy hour) * bulgogi fries (happy hour)

What kind of local place doesn't have loco moco?! Overall disappointed with this place. They make musubis like sushi. No. Also the chicken kelaguen didn't taste very fresh. Sorry Ono's, it wasn't ono this time :(

We had our big family lunch here and they were very gracious in accommodating our big party. We were seated out on the patio which added to the atmosphere. The Mr and I ordered Ono's Bentos, short ribs and CA rolls for me, katsu and spicy tuna roll for him, we also ordered two rolls from their sushi menu to share with everyone, Maui Wowie and the Sun Kissed. The food did take a while to get out, but that was pretty understandable since we had a huge party and we arrived as they were just opening. The service was friendly and they were trying their hardest to make everyone happy. The food that came with the bento was okay, I thought their rolls were good. Those were pretty tasty. The lychee iced tea was refreshing, and flavorful. We ended the meal with malasadas and they were coated with cinnamon and sugar, and those were pretty good, helps to have them made to order. Had to have a point knocked off for having wet plates and silverware.

Service here is a bit slow, the food takes a while to come out... But they were friendly.. Nice ambience. Their food is good.... Love their ramen and salmon dish... The husband gets sushi, and he's satisfied.... Space is limited, not a whole lot of tables... But we've never had to wait the few times we've been here. Seating indoors and patio. Check out their HH menu. Try their Tempura Spam Musubi.. Yum!!

Overall 3.5 stars. Came here because it was recommended by Yelp. was immediately greeted and sat down at a table of my choice. Water was immediately brought out with menus so you can say that the service was a 5 out of 5. We ordered 3 rolls, one entree and 2 appetizers and three drinks. We had the soft shell crab and the shrimp which were on. 5 out of 5 both were crunchy and tasty. The drinks were the lychee onojito (5 star), midnight mojito(3 stars) lychee soju (5 star). The rolls were the onolicious(4), cali love(3), and cornconplis roll(4). All were too mushy. Almost all of the rolls broke apart before they hit my mouth. Very disappointed with this. The rolls came out looking nice but and real person who enjoys sushi can tell you that if your rolls break apart that often then it isn't worth shit. And last but not least the the seafood dynamite was 3 stars very bland.

This place gets 5 stars all the way. Impeccable service, mellow ambiance, and incredible food! I would recommend this place to anyone looking for some excellent Asian food with a twist. We ordered a lot of things to try and nothing was disappointing. The Bonita roll, gyoza, sliders, ceviche, tempura spam masubi, bulgogi fries, a creme brûlée.... All of it was a unique blend of flavors and twists on classic Asian dishes. And all of it was delicious! We had Desiree as our waitress and she was awesome! This place is a must try and we will definitely be back again.

Just okay. I know they're trying to be really upscale and exciting with their dishes, but I normally just get the lumpia or a lunch special. One time I got a little daring and got the smoked salmon/cream cheese roll (I don't like fish) and it was okay until I got a really hard piece of something in the fish -- not bone, but extremely dense meat. That was a little traumatizing.. Eh. Stop by and give it a try if you're in the area.

I have been coming to Ono's for years and always enjoyed their menu items. The decor, ambiance, outside patio, and staff are all a part of what make my visits enjoyable. When you can say you have gone somewhere for many years and had great service each time that in itself is a great feat. Recently they came up with a weekend brunch menu and I really enjoyed it. I have so many favorite items here, the Gyoza, Ahi Poke, Katsu Chicken, Kalbi Ribs are just a few. They use Jasmine Rice wish personally I love. While they do Entrees very well, they do sushi even better, fresh and unique. I highly recommend Maui Wowie [inside: crab / avocado / cucumber outside: fresh salmon / spicy scallops]. If you grew up in this area the Pizza [inside: crab / avocado / smoked salmon outside: dynamite sauce / baked] is a local favorite, ahhh memories of my childhood hehehe. On every trip I treat myself with a Carafe of flavored Soju, flavor of choice always Strawberry-Mango. Ono's has a great beer selection from the classics such as Kirin and Asahi to local craft beers. However nothing goes better with brunch than a Guava Mimosa. Ono's is a not so hidden gem in a quaint part of town. A dining experience you'll enjoy and be completely satisfied with. From great drinks, and delicious food, to a friendly attentive staff, you will be happy you came here.

This place is great!! It's a blend of Japanese/Hawaiian food well all kinds of Asian food. The best is happy hour!! HH is everyday 4-7 and you can't beat the items they have on the menu, everything is legit but I especially am a fan of the spam musabi which is the best I have had from anywhere else I have had it also the hamachi OMG I can eat plate after plate of that stuff, it is served with a thin slice of jalapeño and lemon on top in a ponzu sauce, I believe it's a ponzu sauce well whatever sauce it is it's delicious! It's a little hidden inside of the strip mall area. Service is great and have had a great time when I go.

Always a pleasure to come here! A great place to enjoy islander infused food with a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. The creative food combinations here are delicious and flavorful. Every time I come the food hits the spot. Customer service is always friendly and attentive, a smile every time they serve or need anything. That creates a welcoming and enjoyable place.

This is a great hidden gem in San Diego! We came here on a hunch while we were looking for a place to eat with a large group. As soon as we walked in the servers greeted us and helped us create a 14 top table on their patio for our big group. Mars (sp?) was our waitress and she was an absolute gem! I used to work in a restaurant and know just how hard a large party can be, especially with no reservation, and at prime dinner time. Mars was really attentive and helped with making choices which were all most delish! At one point two of our salmons were not cooked thoroughly, and Mars quickly rectified the situation and even brought out special peppers to snack on while we waited for the recooked meals. The food took a little while to come out but again, we were a large party with no reservation so I'm sure the kitchen was doing the best they could. Overall the food was incredible- I highly suggest the bulgogi fries, and the kalbi ribs, mouth wateringly perfect!! I would definitely recommend this place out, I know some of the reviews say the service was not good but I was really impressed and glad we stopped by. If we lived in South San Diego, we would probably come in more often. It's definitely worth checking out.

I've been here several times, the food is really good. They don't give you a ton of food, which is good, it's just the perfect amount. The don't have a lot of different items on their menu, that's why I'm only giving 4 stars but the food is delish!

I absolutely love this restaurant. It is definitely on my "faves" list of all the San Diego restaurants. My menu "gotta haves" are: edamame (I have to figure out how they do it, 'cause it's the best), vegetable tempura, and crunchy roll. And their delicious dessert fried pastries are a perfect way to end an Asian-fusion dinner. Love it.

Almost a five. We had a table for ten outside and the two of us who came first had to go inside to get attention. Service a bit slow at first, but picked up. Our main server was the sweetest guy! The edamame could have a bit more flavor. I thought the bulgogi fries sounded gross, but they were actually pretty darned good. I ordered the chicken kelaguen, based on a 30+ year old memory of Troping's homemade version. This one was too spicy and not anything like her amazing family recipe. It was sent back and I wasn't charged...SUPER STAR for that!!! My friend likes the lava rocks so much, she didn't even offer a nibble!!! So Cal roll and Sandy's beach roll yummers. I settled for the chicken egg rolls and they were good with tons of the s&s sauce. Okay, now for the most amazing Midnight Mojito. This is a must have! And with muddled blueberries, of all things. Betcha can't drink just one!!!

Ono's is good, there's no doubt in that. However, customer service is just okay. I would've given this place 3 stars for food alone but with this recent experience I had to deduct a star. Reason being is that the table across from us was offered a 50% discount on their meal for the evening if they wrote a review and checked in on Yelp right away. 2 things wrong with that; if you're going to offer something like that either say it secretly OR offer it to everyone else across the board and if you're going to offer it just so you can get good reviews, don't offer it at all. You can get 5 stars off of the food alone but you didn't choose that route. Oh well, lessons learned and there goes my recommendations of your customer service.

  • Batsinia H.

Very small portions for a mediocre taste, overpriced menu, the malasadas ordered were the only thing worth the time spent there. Service was a little slow at first and the mojito was watered down.

Food is delicious! Service is top notch, and Happy hour specials until close (went on a Wed night). They even had chicken kelaguen and finadeni! If your in the Bonita area....definitely drop in.

We've been waiting a while for a good weekend brunch place in Bonita and now we have one. I had the Kahlua pork omelette and my wife had the stuffed French toast. Both were excellent. We'll be back.

Very friendly staff and good food. The teriyaki pasta is to die for! The interior brings a very good atmosphere for any occasion. The lumpia has such a great taste along with the sauce that gives it a little kick. Please Please order the Zenga! You will not regret it

Sadly I have to report the service has gone from bad to worse. I have been a long time loyal customer since the place opened. I was patient and always cut the staff slack because food is innovative and yummy. However, over the years the service has gone downhill. The servers should train on being more attentive to customers. I get that they have no control over the chefs. BUT If you have to WAIT (average wait is 30 minutes) then at least keep up w/ refills. If your WAIT is LONGER than 40 minutes (like mine was tonight (for 2 sushi rolls and 1 order of Malasadas), you'd expect an apology and complimentary ANYTHING. Apology was only after food was finally ready and servers awkwardly avoided eye contact and tried to appear to be busy... as I waited....and waited. Sorry Ono's - I'm hoping my post along w/ others will prompt a change. Hopefully caring for loyal customers matter...

Island time service. If you are in a hurry go somewhere else. The food is great, the atmosphere is wonderful, and servers are very polite and professional. I've ordered the following and I highly recommend: Spam Musubi - Appetizer Bulgogi Fries - Appetizer Kalua Pig Plate Teriyaki Beef Sliders Malasadas-Portuguese donuts. Yum. A favorite happy hour place too.

  • Ayesha W.

Chill vibe. Good food. I personally love the bulgogi fries & the zenga for dessert! The happy hour here is really good also! The last time I was here, I checked in & received 50% off a dessert. I come here often with friends. I live nearby so this is always one of the options when deciding where to go to eat. It never disappoints!

I signed up for yelp just so I could share how horrible the sushi was here. I've been here in the past plenty of times and the food was great, but this place is on the down slopes. I ordered the same sushi rolls I usually get and what was brought to the table was warm, far from fresh sushi. We never leave left overs but we hardly touched the rolls. This used to be a great place, and hopefully the owners read these reviews, we won't be returning

For a light lunch, highly recommend the Molokai Salad but with the Ginger Dressing. Then go Total Fat Ass! and get the Malasadas.

The food was good. I had a spicy octopus roll and my husband had sashimi plate. Tasty dinner. Service is friendly. They were out of all the beers my husband tried to order so they comped one which was nice of them. This is a casual and nice spot for a good meal.

  • Wiggle P.

I went here for the first time today with co-workers and I must say that this is the best meals I've had in some time. The menu has some very unique and creative dishes but nothing so wild you won't want to try if you aren't the adventurous type. We shared the teriyaki sliders, lumpia, and stuff mushrooms. Sounds standard but the stuffing, seasoning and toppings set these dishes apart. My only complaint is there isn't one near my house.

  • Lefty S.

Not really good service and the sushi is pretty basic. Good spot though if you wanted to get together with some friends and have some drinks during Cheap Sushi Happy Hours. Drinks and some basic rolls never a bad thing.

Nice place... but I was very disappointed with their seafood dynamite..The presentation was nice but the follow through was ehh so so..it was served in a tower type and rice underneath.. The jasmine rice was mushy and wet.. if you can't make rice right then you have a problem..the actual dynamite was dyna-DUD! It too was mushy.... I've had seafood dynamite at other places and it always has chunks of FRESH fish and shrimp.. It was never mush.. the dyna-dud had previously frozen tiny shrimp with crab.. no fish at all as far as I can tell.. It was hard because the consistency was mush.. The calamari was disguised as chicken nuggets and was bland..but there is a positive the Malasadas are delicious.. I will be coming back just for those...

If I could give a negative star I would. I don't know much about the restaurant business but you would think if you wanted to stay in business in this competitive industry you would have to have: 1. Greatfood 2.Great service. It was my first time there and Ono's had some pretty good sushi but their service was SO BAD that it completely made me lose my appetite. It took 20 min for someone to take our order, me asking the hostess what was taking our food long (a guy next to us got his sushi first and came after us!), another person bringing out our food and not even knowing what we had, another person asking us if we wanted water towards the end of the meal, and another person to bring our check. I had no idea who our real waiter was and being busy was no excuse for the amount of time it took. My friend and I both agreed that we would never come back there again. For the price of their sushi, they really need to work on their service if they want to keep afloat. It was bad. Just. Plain. Bad.

The food here is amazing and the decor is beautiful and relaxing. If you like island, Japanese or seafood you will love this place. The banana cheesecake dessert is to die for. Easily my favorite restaurant in Bonita!

Had Ono's for the first time yesterday and it was pretty good. Had sake bombs and 5 different rolls during happy hour. The SoCal Roll is absolutely a "must try" roll. It's probably one of my new favorites. The servers were nice and chill too. Our waitress was wonderful but I can remember her name. She was Caucasian female with red hair. The person who sat us, Miguel, was really nice too and hooked us up with some siracha. Definitely coming back.

Been here many times. But we got here at 250 ordered at 255 for lunch. Got our food at 330pm. Two lunch entrees, never got our miso soup. Got a side order of gyoza 3 minutes right before we received our desert. So I don't know what's going on with the service, but the staff is friendly and food is excellent. I have to give this visit 1 star because of how unorganized and terrible the service was.

Standard waiting time, not too long for a sushi restaurant. What was actually excellent was the curry katsu ramen, highly recommended! They're really friendly and available, my family and I enjoyed the dinner.

I've been here many times, and usually I'm not disappointed. I personally think it's one of the hidden gems of Bonita. I love their service, always so friendly and attentive. And their decor I can't ever get tired of looking at, especially their epic fish tank. So yes, and here's for the food and drinks A favorite dish of mine that I always come back to it the Chicken Teriyaki pasta entree. By the way, the reason why I give this four stars because the somewhat inconsistent overall taste of the the richness of the creamy plus sweet and salty sauce. There are times where it's tasting perfectly amazing, then the other times I visit sometimes it lacked (just a bit) the perfect taste I had before. Other than that, I had tried many of their other selections and all have made my stomach very Buddha happy. lol Entrees -Grilled Basa is definitely one to try, the presentation is what I love the most about it. -Teriyaki Beef Sliders is so tasteful! With how the meat is cooked combined with the caramelized onions, really play their roles very well together. Nom Desserts -Yeah try all of them. But I'm so sad they don't have the mango creme brulee anymore :((((( Appetizers -My family usually gets the calamari and gyoza, but then again I'll just be safe and say try all of them. lol Drinks -I usually get the Coconut Vanilla Tea Blend, even though it has caffeine, I find it the most soothing and silky. -Onotini's offffffffff courseeeeeeeeeee...only because like my fruity flavors - I had my first saki-bomb here, and I was surprised it tasted good. And lastly, THEIR SPECIALS ARE WORTH COMING BACK FOR! Around 4-7pm :) Hope this helps? lol

I went here for the first time the other day with my friends. The place had an intimate setting and nice ambiance. The wait for the food was quite long, 30-45 minute wait. We ordered a teriyaki chicken pasta, pizza sushi roll, and caterpillar sushi roll plus a dessert. Three of us shared all the different dishes and it was very fulfilling. The pasta in particular was my favorite since it was really creamy and flavorful. The sushi was really pricey compared to other places I have been to and it's nothing to go crazy for. The sushi isn't really worth to get. I remember us chipping in $15 each which was alright. The servers would rarely check on how we were doing throughout our time there and it took an extremely long time to get the bill which was annoying.

Totally a fan of this place - for a few reasons. First off, we went on a Wednesday when they have an extended happy hour. I believe its 4pm-close & their happy hour menu prices are unbeatable. There were several items priced at $5 or less. It was a toss up between the kelaguen chips and bulgogi fries. We ordered the bulgogi fries & were not let down! Pretty good portion & for $5!? I was amazed. Basic sushi rolls were 50% & I ordered a Philadelphia roll. Now this is my ONLY complaint. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but the salmon in the Philadelphia tasted like smoked salmon. Now, I love the overpowering taste of the cream cheese which is why I usually get a philly roll. But the smoked salmon overpowered the cream cheese so I was a little disappointed. Not to say that it wasn't good, just a personal preference of mine. My husband got a sun kissed roll & loved it. Seared ahi on top with pieces of salmon & I believe it was spicy tuna on the inside. It's supposed to have snow crab on top but they were out of it the day we went. At least the waiter was nice enough to let us know before making it. Overall good service & nice decor! We will definitely be back if we are in the area.

Have been going here on and off for the past couple of years. They occasionally have offer from Fox news for "be our guest". Always a nice place to eat. Their lunch specials are very reasonable for what you receive, especially the bento boxes. Their sliders are awesome! Made on hawaiian rolls and served with garlic aioli. My toddler surprisingly loved them. Their iced teas are yummy! My hubby loves the panko crusted salmon. We always get the malasdas. Overall, great place for families.

Came to eat for brunch. Rachelle seated us promptly with a smile. The decor here is pretty cool but the booths make me want to play Mahjong Solitaire (Go look at my pictures and tell me if you see it.) We started with a lemonade and a Chamomile Tea in the coolest decantor/tea kettle combo. You put it on top of the glass and it pours downward into the cup which you can also purchase for $25.00 there. I ordered the Calamari and Island Sampler appetizers along with the Caterpillar and my man ordered the Teriyaki beef plate. You know what really irritates me? When the owner of a place comes out of the back office walking around and makes eye contact with a customer and can not even afford a smile. This saddened me. They brought my man a miso soup as part of his plate and it was very good. I just did not understand why it was being served out of a Mexican salsa bowl, to each their own I guess. The calamari was cooked with a mixed tempura batter that was just awesome! The Island Sampler was just OK for me. Nothing truly stood out for me but it was still good and it pretty much stayed the same for me with the Caterpillar. My man let me taste the Teriyaki Beef and that was really good but the amount of meat portion for a meat plate was not very good. The service here was great and the food just OK. I had to try dessert especially since they are promoting on Yelp for half off on dessert. I ordered the Bonfire and the Malasadas with Cinn/Sugar and desert was good. OWNER: You should smile at your customers! I worked hard to be able to come and spend my money there. Also I would tell your property owner to fix that parking lot! It is horrendous

I was really hoping to like this place, as I'm always down to support local businesses. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the food and prices. I ordered a $14 baked roll, which completely fell apart when I tried to eat it. All of the flavors were so mixed up I could barely taste what was what. Disappointed with what I had ordered, I tried to eat off my kid's plates. There rolls were more traditional, but the fish was unimpressive. I won't be hurrying back to Ono's, even with it being a local neighborhood restaurant.

First time here, and it was amazing! The honey popcorn shrimp appetizer is TO DIE FOR. I got the bento box with teriyaki beef and it was delicious as well. Its sacrilegious not to have the malasadas and a cup of Kona coffee for desert!!! Yum yum yum

When my fiancè and I couldn't decide on what to eat, I searched on Yelp "dinner" and we where brought to this restaurant. It was a good choice! We tried the calamari, teriyaki sliders and katsu curry ramen. Everything was delicious! The only small complaint I have is that their sushi rolls are quite pricey. But overall, I'd recommend this place.

1st no body was there around dinner time and still took hella long to serve our food 2nd too pricey 3rd miso soup was cold when served 4th the sushi rice was hard as a rock horrible! 5th nori was old no crunch at all 6th service was not the greatest. 7th I don't know why this place has good reviews?????? Never ever coming back here again.

The food has always been amazing here but the service is always lacking. It takes a while to get stuff from the waiters and the sushi pieces are very large. I like this place but find it a bit pricy

    (4)
  • Karam K.

Way below average sushi. Was starving when I got here and was extremely disappointed and hungry when I left. Even the sliders were mediocre. I usually don't like to write bad reviews but in this case I feel obligated to let the rest know. I'm starting to think that any positive review here is done by friends and family. The one star was a must for me in order to post this review. And I'll give that to the service and staff, they have no say in the quality of food.

I've had sushi, but nothing like this. The Chef created the most eye popping sushi roll and it tasted even better. Our server just moved from HI and he created that easy going helpful attitude. I will be back soon without the kids. Not to kid friendly. A little pricey, but it was worth it.

In love with the atmosphere of the place. The decor is simple yet straight to the point, the restaurant is primarily slim and not very spacious but good enough to have a small celebration. I like to sit near the huge fish tank and today the waiter was friendly and when asked for recommendations, am happy that I've chosen the rolls that he mentioned. Everyday they have happy hour from 4-7, on wednesdays the happy hour is extended from 4 until closing. On Monday, they have 25% off specialty rolls from 7-10 and on other days are other specials, mostly on drinks. The Hana Hou ($11) which is baked easily became one of my favorites. If you enjoy a pizza roll with a twist this may be to your liking. Inside includes smoked salmon, avocado and crab and on the outside includes dynamite sauce, sauteed shitake and button mushrooms, unagi sauce. I thoroughly enjoyed the mushrooms. The Onolicious ($14) included smoked salmon, crab and cream cheese. Outside includes spicy scallops, bonito flakes, tempura and unagi sauce. This roll is deep fried and crunchy. I found the topping it with spicy scallops AND the bonito flakes a good idea, definitely creative. The Zen Roll ($14) includes spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, spicy crab, cucumber, daikon sprouts. Outside includes fresh salmon, avocado, lemon slices, red onion, red tobiko and garlic ponzu. This is a pretty heavy roll with still being refreshing and fulfilling. I can have just this roll and be completely stuffed. I favor onions on any roll and fresh salmon so this was my favorite roll from the get. There are various happy hour specials that I haven't got to try, however I do wish to visit again. They have bulgogi fries and chicken kelaguen with chips. Definitely on my "to-eat" list. They also have sake bombs ($5.50). It comes with a small hot sake and a 22oz Sapporo or Kirin. Not only do they serve sushi, although it was mostly what I've had. But they have various rice dishes. This place definitely meets quality and quantity, and I encourage all to dine at this bistro.

I've been going to Ono's for years. It started out as a much smaller place, then grew into the adjacent suite. I think that ownership changed somewhere along the way. Food is USUALLY excellent. The wife and I are creatures of habit. I always get the Kahlua Pig and she always gets Seafood Dynamite. A couple times, these dishes were not quite up to par. Don't know why. Different cook? I almost gave up, but the last couple visits, the dishes were back to their usual yummyness. Service is typically decent. Like most restaurants, they occasionally get a server who is a bit inattentive, but mostly I have no complaints. It's worth a visit.

Went back again 2 nights ago and experience was even better than before. Food was stellar, presentation great, but service was the real standout. Hostess was nice and accommodated our request for specific booth. Our server (Tyler) was amazing. See if you can request him as he will help you sort through their extensive menu options very patiently.

This place is great for happy hours. Half off basic rolls and 6 dollar sake and beer. And the bulgogi fries are awesome but their chicken is meh. The sushi is ok at best too As for dessert, zenga are hella good. It's all the evil things put it one!

I wanted up my ratings for this place because I love supporting local businesses but man... y'all really shoved the steel toe up my A$$. Now the very first time I've ever had anything from Ono's, I was mad in love with this Teriyaki pasta dish my ma brought home one night. This was about 5 years or so. The next time I've had something from there was their malasadas (as reviewed in my previous post). I was pretty disappointed. Now I finally get the chance to go and dine in with my sister and her family and the consensus around the table was disappointment, and here's why. THE FOOD: I ordered the Ying and Yang Roll ( which was supposed to be spicy), my niece had the kalua pork, my nephew had the katsu, my sister got the macademia-nut crusted salmon, my brother-in-law got something magnificent looking ( I think it was the Seafood Dynamite), and we all shared the glazed shrimp appetizer. Honey Popcorn Shrimp - This was not too bad. You can taste the honey and the crunch was nice. It complimented the texture of the shrimp and the greens helped to cut the richness of the glaze. Ying and Yang Roll - Now if I'm not mistaken, this roll was indicated to be spicy on their menu. Maybe it's just me but there was no spice detectable. I mean the flavor was alright but I was expecting something with more heat to it. Kalua Pork - The meat was dry. Like FORREAL. Macademia Crusted Salmon - Hmm. Well the black Thai rice was interesting. It had floral hints to the flavor. The salmon was okay but I was expecting to see more crust to it. The Seafood Dynamite - This was actually real good and the presentation was amazing. It looked as though it came out of a 5-star restaurant. The seafood and rice was stacked in a ring and the flavors melded together harmoniously. The Chicken Katsu - As per my nephew's comment, "the other place was better." THE SERVICE: Alright. So this is where we had the biggest problem. The waiter and my sister discussed the two different dishes. She asked what he thought was better and he said one item over the one she initially wanted. She chose her first selection and waited. Our server comes out with his recommendation and had to return it. To put it this way, we were almost done eating our food before my sister even got her dish. Another issue we had was ordering the appetizers. In addition to the shrimp, we had ordered the edamame. All around the table, we knew it was mentioned to the waiter and when we had asked, he said it was not ordered. Other servers walking around even asked if we were being helped because the wait took a while. I'll try and go back to this place one more time, and I hope they don't see this as bashing. Believe me, it's a beautiful restaurant with good people behind operations but there's always room for improvement. Hopefully my next visit will be better.

Been here twice and both during happy hour. Good drink specials . The food is very good in my opinion. Not the best, but solidly good. Bulgogi fries and ceviche were my favorites. Nice atmosphere. Clean. Can get really busy on the weekends during happy hour for obvious reasons. Seems pretty understaffed bc the service, although very nice, was also very slow. When I looked around, many customers were sitting around waiting for service and looking pretty peeved. My table included. Basically waited 30min just to get drinks on the table! Eek. However, as soon as happy hour ended, normalcy returned and the service was great. Ono's needs to hire more hands for happy hour at least. All in all, would go back for happy hour for food and prices, but service definitely needs a pick-me-up. I gave a 3, but definitely 4 star potential.

I ordered the bento box with vegetable limpia and chicken katsu. It came with the most delicious miso soup and a salad that was also really good. The best part of the meal was the coconut vanilla tea that came in a really cool dispenser. The service was also amazing.

*sigh* I wish I could say that I was pleasantly surprised by what they had to offer. But after coming back, again, this time for the sushi, I was bitterly disappointed. I honestly don't know what happened. And it makes me sad that this local business has gone down hill (at least in my book). Like I've said before, I really used to like it here and would come often, but something has changed and not for the better. The sushi was pretty awful. We ordered a mix of rolls and were just completely shocked at how bad they tasted. We ended up picking them apart and just eating some of the veggies inside them. Even the crab and tempura wasn't good. Though, I will give them props for their tuna sashimi, which was probably the only thing actually worth eating. In terms of their rolls, I'd rather eat supermarket sushi. We ended up ordering the malasadas in an attempt to make the night end on a good note, and while they were good, it wasn't able to salvage the evening for us. I wish I wasn't so disappointed about this place, I really used to like it, a lot. It makes me sad. :(

It was our first time eating there. We liked the atmosphere and the staff was friendly but the food and service wasn't so great. My sister ordered the chicken karate bento box and the chicken was undercooked. The rice from the spider roll was mushy and the bento box was big but the portion was small...the restaurant is overpriced for the amount of food they serve..plus their service was slow. It took over 30 minutes to get our food.. wouldn't go back to this place.. I think Sushiya and Valentino's serve better good and they have faster service.

I love Ono's and go there often. I've probably been there 25 times and only had a problem with the food once. They replaced the item. So, great food, friendly and capable service, and you can't beat the 50% off happy hour. The atmosphere is Hawaiian-ish and a mix of classy and sports bar. Best sushi in San Diego.

There aren't many things I'd travel down to Chula Vista for - except work, of course. Actually, come to think of it, there's nothing else I'd travel south of the 94 freeway for other than work ... and now Ono's. I was confused by Ono's when my co-workers suggested it for a birthday celebration being that you can hardly find it in the little shopping center marked by one yellow and one blue dinosaur. See? Confusion. Weird little dinosaurs aside, once the food started coming, I was Ono's biggest fan. I ordered a Bento with a spicy crab roll and some kind of short ribs. With a little rice and salad on the side, I ate everything and it was just enough ... that is, until we saw the dessert menu. We ordered the malasadas, WHICH ARE SO RIDICULOUSLY AMAZING THAT YES, HAVE TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS, and shared some dessert called Zengu or Zenga or something to that effect. It was truly delicious but really, how can you go wrong with a fried tortilla stuffed with cheese? Ridiculous.

I've been here several times and I really like the sushi and decor. Only had the privilege to enjoy the extended late night happy hour once and that was last night (Wednesday). The hh had some awesome items for pretty cheap cheap! We tried the spam musubi roll and it was excellent!! I'd get 2 next time cause there were only 4 pieces in the order:( the other rolls we got were the "paradise" which included mango surprisingly and the "onolicious" which was deep fried and had some yummy cream cheese and tasty eel sauce slathered on top. Now for the service.... Walked in and it's always the same story, you wait right in the way of the door, servers, customers... But we got seated pretty quickly this time. This night which I thought was strange they had a full on patio/lounge set up in front with a loud DJ (it was wednesday mind you). The music from outside was being played inside and it was too too loud. I couldn't hear myself speak or even hear what was being said to me. Overall our service was good and I will come back for sure but maybe not past 7pm since it turns into this strange sushi club thing.

They have a bunch of good desserts here. They're not your usual cheesecake and brownie type desserts. Their desserts are really elegant. But, the best part of this place is the malasadas! It's hard to find a place that serves this, but they do over here! For those who don't know, a malasada is kind of like a beignet, but it's a little more dense and they use regular granulated sugar. They also have a large selection of coffees and teas to go with any of your desserts.

So, I've been here with family and friends many times, but I finally decided to write a review. First off, happy hour is awesome! Sake bombs are reasonably priced and the sushi is top-notch! Dinner includes a very well rounded menu of island inspired dishes including my girlfriends' favorite teriyaki chicken alfredo. I have had the salmon wrap, grilled halibut (AWESOME), and almost all of their appetizers. Overall, an awesome menu of quality food, good atmosphere, friendly staff and some killer Hawaiian Hazelnut coffee and desserts!

The other night we went car shopping down to the Imperial Beach area. We had planned a romantic walk on the pier but after test driving gutless Honda Civics that were automatic we became hungry. So I'm like "where is that place we like down in Bonita, I can't remember the name?" Well we start driving around end up on a toll road, and finally found it, it's called Ono's, they have sushi but it's not probably considered a Sushi place, I think it's a fusion of Japanese and Hawaiian food. The first time I was there I had taken a break from the INS immigration line with a number in my hand. We came into a much smaller space back then, it was more a tea boba shop with some added food items and great deserts. But we were delighted with the staff, the service, the food items and the ambiance is excellent. Beautiful clean large fish tank to watch, nice music, cool video's or photos displaying in the corners. Happy people : ) Anyway they told us they were planning to expand the menu some day, and now they have. They also expanded the restaurant and it's tastefully done with various tables and booths and low lighting that still manages to allow you to see your food and your friend across the table. Something about this place just has the most positive vibe, it's nice to see someone plan their business slowly grow and do it right. My friends I strongly urge you to take a little road trip out here if it's not too close it's really fun, tucked away back in a strip mall but I don't think you'll be disappointed. William was our waiter, he was on top of the water filling (as close as most staff can with Kim's water-a-hoilc tendencies). The food was fresh and quickly timed, our appetizer plate had edamame and no one in the city makes it the way they do. It's sweet and salty with sesame seeds and you just want to suck each one dry ;) I had the Kahlua Pork dish, it came with shredded pork, shredded cucumbers I think on the side and rice. I could not eat it all and brought more than half home which was even good when reheated 2 days later. I also had a lychee tea that was in a large glass like the old root beer ones with ice and I rarely finish drinks but had no problem with this one. Anyway, treat yourself for a romantic get-a-way and check this place out, it's easy to get there you needn't get lost like we did it's just down the I-5.

3.5 stars. Came here for the first time last week and I thought the sushi and service was just ok. The decor is cute but it's almost too quiet in there! (Well unless it's not usually like that). Came here b/c I heard there was a good happy hour..which didn't disappoint. It's was so cheap! The best part of the meal was dessert.. We had the famous malasadas! Even better when they were fresh and hot!

This place is REALLY good. My boyfriend and I came here because they had a deal on Facebook. I've heard my friends talking about this place so I decided to give it a shot. The service was good when we went. We had a woman waitress...I don't know her name, but she was very nice and got whatever we needed. We ordered the Bonita Roll, Kalua Pork plate, and the Volcano roll. All were very tasty. The Bonita roll wasn't too spicy even though it had the spicy tuna and chipotle sauce. It was the perfect amount of spice. THe Kalua pork was cooked with cabbage which is how i like my Kalua pork cooked. It came with some teri sauce on top which complimented it well. The Volcano roll was my favorite. I liked that it was baked. All the ingredients went together and blended in so well. OH, and their sweetened passion fruit tea is the BEST. It isn't too sweet. I really want to eat here again!

I've eaten here twice. The first time was for lunch, I forgot what I bought but it was "okay." The 2nd time was a romantic dinner between my husband & I. We were thinking of a place to go and I suggested Ono's since he's never eaten there before. I love the decorations, the setting and prompt service. Not to mention their malasadas! I thought the food was okay but for the price per entree is kinda pricey in my opinion. I got the chicken katsu entree and my husband ordered the kalua pork. I think for each entree it was about $16 each. I could always go to Da Kine's for a good and cheap Hawaiian style lunch or dinner for $9. I love their dessert selection! We tried one of their desserts...and it fit the name! It was soooo Ono!!! I would go here again, but this time I'd use the coupon from the Clipper magazine.

okay yesterday was my second going to ono's cafe. It was actually pretty good this time around. My friend and I ordered tempura sam misubi, terriyaki chicken pasta, dynamite mussels for appetizer, one of the specialty rolls and a kaluha creme brulee. It was all pretty bomb, especially the spam misubi. The only reason why I give it a 4/5 is because it was pretty pricy. For two people, it came out to be about $63 for all the things I listed above. However, I saw the happy hour menu which sounded awesome, but it is only during 4-7 (Mon-Fri). So if you want to go there during dinner on weekdays, it'll be a great place to go. Plus, it's a very unique hawaiian/sushi place to go.

  • Mega G.

We go here just for the warm, delicious malasadas (large donut holes in cinnamon or sugar--sugar tastes best I think, but you can get half and half). That's what the 3 stars are for. The service and atmosphere are very nice but the food is otherwise mostly disappointing. The BBQ lacks flavor and the pulled pork is ordinary. The sushi rolls are good but kinda pricey. BUT...you have to try the malasadas!

I've only been here once, but I'll definitely be back. My friend suggested that we meet here for dinner on a Saturday night. It was kind of easy to miss because it's sort of hidden behind the Wells Fargo. Plus, it was pretty dark out, and there aren't too many lights in the plaza it's located in. The parking lot was pretty bare, so that wasn't too reassuring. The restaurant had a few customers, too. However, my friend insisted this was a good place. I ordered the grilled chicken wrap, since I wasn't too hungry. I was expecting a little wrap, but it was pretty large, considering it was one of the less expensive items on the menu. I'm hoping that business here is better than what I saw. Perhaps it's just the tough economic times. Definitely will be back if I'm ever in the area to try some of their entrees.

Nice little find in Bonita. Really good food, comfortable setting, quick service! I had the Kilba ribs, sushi rolls and malasadas were all mouth watering good! But I especially like the Malasadas! They make them to order, 10 fluffy balls of fried dough rolled in sugar and cinnamon. YUMMY!

The sushi is good! The atmosphere is very nice and comfortable. We ordered the Hot Wahine, which was sooo yummy. We also ordered the Yellowfin Nigiri and two other specialty rolls which were neither horrible nor great. My only complaint is when we asked for Green Tea, they brought us jasmine tea... I'm not a tea conoisseur but I do know what green tea tastes like.. and it certainly doesn't taste like the smell of a bathroom. Sorry that's what it tasted like. Otherwise, we'll definitely be back, but will skip the tea = )

Met my wedding planner here for dinner since she recommended it and I'm glad we did. The location is quite a drive for me since I was staying downtown San Diego. The restaurant has a great vibe and the service was also excellent. We tried a couple of appetizers: stuffed mushrooms & calamari. Both were tasty and it was a decent portion. For my entree, I ordered the Macadamia Crusted Salmon with black Thai rice & Asian slaw. I enjoyed the salmon as it was cooked perfectly but the slaw was my favorite. The fusion of the flavors were so delicious. I was certainly glad that they gave a big portion of the slaw in my plate.

Great Happy Hour! With two sushi rolls, a few Onotinis and margaritas and a decadent Kalua creme brulee dessert, it was only $40 (after tip) for a friend and I to spend a lovely dinner at Ono's. The only drawback was the service, which I usually have no issue with. For some reason on my last visit my table was essentially ignored for an hour and we were left with empty drinks and unhapy faces. We had to basically stalk our waiter. It wasn't even a particularly busy night. Additionally, when our server did notice we were still there, he kept showing up with the check even though we indicated that we were planning to stay and have more drinks. Not the place to go if you expect to have stellar service. BUT...the decor is quaint, and the food delicious (the creme brulee came out still on fire...bonus points for the visual effects). It's never too crowded. Great local hidden gem. Get there from 4-7 for happy hour food prices, the happy hour drinks are until 10. And awesome for having something other than Sapphoro and saki to drink. Try the lychee matini or hibiscus margarita...

I'm so upset with our service that we had last night. If I could give this a negative 5 I would! Don't get me wrong, I still love their food, but the wait took us forever! I waited for over an hour to get my food and I finally just told our waiter to cancel my order (I don't even think he put the order in the first place) and demanded to receive a discount because of the inconvenience. I'm never like this even when I do receive crappy service but this was necessary. I hope they get their act together because it's a shame that a place with such good food has to have horrible service.

Service was good but the food was GREAT!!!! Wether you're in the mood for sushi or a full on dinner, this is the place to be. This is a great late night little nook with ambiance to spare. I've seen other reviews saying as much- and they are not kidding. Even if you simply wan't to wind down with a smoothie and a dessert, you and you're date will not find a better spot in bonita. Check this place out, you won't be sorry. -Chris

Last few visits service was not too memorable but this time around I had a great experience here with my mom for lunch. The waitress was perky and very accommodating. I also received 50%off dessert for checking in on Yelp. Their Zenga is a must have. I definitely love that their ingredients always taste fresh and is packed with lots of flavor!!!

Just left this place with my family. My wife and I ordered some ramen which by the way when it got to our table was cold and the noodles were under cooked. How do you under cook noodles???? My daughter ordered the teriyaki chicken and guess what??? The chicken was cold as well.... We've been coming to this place for a good minute and it just seems like the quality of food has been going down. Guess we won't be going back anymore. To top it off we got our spammusubi (our appetizer by the way) after our dinner was served.

This place is delicious. I've been here dozens of times, and everything on the menu is great. Quick service, friendly servers, and gourmet, delicious food. The ahi salad in particular is awesome; they use an entire ahi tuna steak and it's cooked to perfection. Their happy hour is from 4-7 as well, and is a great way to try this place out since it's 1/2 off many items and you can sample a lot. I take people from out of town here all the time because of how great it is. It's definitely worth trying out. Edit: I'm seeing a lot of bad reviews from people because of service issues? I've been here tons of times and have never had a problem. If you're worried about it, try going in from 4-7. Regardless of happy hour that's when I go, and I've never had an issue.

I was pleasantly surprised by this place. In my mind I was thinking, OK this is not going to be the real deal sushi, its going to be a white man's bastardization of what sushi is. I was partially right because they had some funky type of rolls on the menu. We settled for some rolls and not the nigiri sushi, but I was pleasantly surprised with the rolls. They were really good! The biggest surprise was the pizza sushi roll. I was reading the reviews here and saw that everyone liked the pizza roll. So I figured, why not. It was really good. I would love to order it again. They had to roll me out of the restaurant. Also had the blueberry soju mojito. That was a winner too!

There was a hair in my sushi - my bf hunted down one of the servers to show him (as it seemed ours was no where to be found) and this server himself literally said "eww gross" and took the plate back. Later our server comes back with a new plate (or so I hope because we can't see what it going on in the kitchen). No apology, no nothing. We weren't ever checked up on as we dined in and to get our tab we had to chase down the server again ... As well as to pay. Not to mention, they never brought us the edamame we ordered. I am not coming back. It is unfortunate because I had been looking foward to coming here for a while.

First time here. Ambiance and cleanliness of the restaurant was great. We ordered the Bulgogi Fries, Spicy Salmon Roll, and Shrimp Tempura Roll, and Zenga for dessert. - The Bulgogi Fries were good.. not as great as everyone hyped up Bulgogi to be though. - Spicy Salmon Roll were small rolls (since it was Happy Hour) and not as spicy as I expected. Still good though. - Shrimp Tempura Roll was ok. There was hardly any shrimp, but lots of crab as filler. - Zenga: Sooo yummy! I have a sweet tooth and the fried cream cheese was delicious, but a little too sweet for me to finish. Overall, the place is nice and a great place to eat. I will come back again and try other items on their menu.

This place is amazing! We never decide to go ANYWHERE in the chula vista area when we go out to eat. This place is such a great find. Centrally located and the sushi is fantastic. Jalapeño lava roll is my fave

The only thing I can complain about was the warmth of the place as it seems they have no AC. It was my first time back to Ono's in 2 years because of graduate school, but the food tasted better. The Katsu chicken was great and they added a tasty dipping sauce, and the Asian slaw is still very good in my opinion. My girlfriend got the chicken wrap, which was huge, and very good. We also shared a zen roll. It was very big and filling.

First time here came with sister and nephew. Server was Miguel. His recommendations were right on. He was very personable had great rapport with my nephew. Hooked it up by telling us to review on yelp and get 50% off a dessert. Would totally come back and ask for MIGUEL!

Ono's is a place to go if you are not in a hurry. This is the 3rd time I've eaten and each time we've had to wait a while to be seated. It didn't seem busy enough to have to wait this long. Oh well - on to the food. The food is pretty good. There were plenty of things to try on the happy hour menu. The Bulgogi Fries, Pulled Pork Sliders, and Spam Musubi were all very good.

My friends and I come here for happy hour every chance we get. I'm giving them 5 stars mostly because of their service. We always have a great experience and the food is an added bonus. Try the Bulgogi Fries, Hamachi Jalapeño, and their fruity Sake in a Carafe-I recommend the Strawberry Mango. Lastly for dessert I suggest their Zenga-it's cheesecake wrapped in a tortilla, fried and rolled in cinnamon, topped with chocolate sauce, flambè-ed bananas, vanilla ice cream and chopped macadamia nuts. Yum! **If you check in you get 50% off your dessert ;)))

My husband and I had dinner here about a week ago. At first the atmosphere was decent. The place kind of reminds me of some of the restaurants on Maui, HI. There was a couple sitting next to us who seemed to be dissatisfied with something. Apparently part of their order was completely overlooked and they ended up leaving barley touching their food. We decided to order anyways and give the place a chance. I ordered the Onos house roll and spicy tuna rolls, while my husband got a California roll and a tempura roll. We also ordered miso soup and edamame. By the time we ordered, the place started getting moderately busy. There was only one waiter serving all of the tables and another guy helping out with minor stuff like filling drinks etc. Even though it was busy, the place was silent and HOT. Only fans and they were on so high that the air was blowing into my eyes making me squint. We finally got our food after waiting 20 minutes. The food was okay. Not great. The miso soup was very season, super salty and there was no tofu in it. The edamame was also seasoned, possibly soaked in soy sauce or something. Both super salty. The sushi was okay, the rolls were so big that I couldn't eat it in one bite. And I ran out of water and it took them forever and a day to refill my glass. We left somewhat sweaty from sitting there so long in the heat and felt like we needed a gallon of water just to flush out the saltiness. And the bill was not cheap either. We are not gonna go back to this place. Looks like we need to keep looking disappointed.

We've been here several times and the sushi here is typically very good in our opinion. The place is expensive and sometimes slow but overall usually pretty good. Our recent experience, however, left us cold and we now must give this place the bad review it deserves. We dined in during happy hour last Friday. It didn't start out very packed but got busier as we sat there. Our server was fine at first, but service became extremely slow in terms of bringing out our food (my miso soup came out way later than our entrees and the sushi and only after reminding them twice), for refills, for anything extra we needed like more wasabi, and for some of our rolls. After asking many times for an update on whereabouts of one of our rolls, our server apologized and said they'd forgotten or lost our order and so it went to the bottom of the list and would therefore be a longer wait so did they just want us to take it off the order? My husband was very upset at this response. This was their fault, shouldn't they have put it to the TOP of the list and gotten it out to us as soon as possible to correct their mistake? Then we asked to speak to a manager, and our server said he'd go check. After a little bit he came out and said the manager wasn't available. On a Friday, during happy hour? Come on. He or she just didn't want to be bothered. We then asked who was in charge then and our server said he guessed he was. It was pretty ridiculous the way it was handled on their part. It was terrible customer service and very poor management. We will not recommend or provide repeat business to this place.

Nice calming place with good food and great happy hour. Everything I've tried has been good, the chicken kelaguen and chips is delicious, make sure to ask for a side of lemons and put that on there! The ceviche is also good, they made it their own in a good way. Customer service has always been good, I just wish my water would be refilled before it's empty.

There is NO Sushi/entree/food I don't like here. I LOVE everything here. They now have brew on tap (SD Local brews: Karl Strauss, Ballast Point, Coronado Brewery...and imports Sapporo & Kirin Ichiban). This place has Happy Hour EVERYDAY, including weekends... 4pm-7pm, Wednesdays HH is 4pm-10pm...and they also have Lunch specials EVERDAY until 3pm. The ambiance is nice and has the island feel with the island music playing overhead. Also, they have Ramen (Kalua Pig ramen, Katsu Curry ramen, and a Vegetable Ramen...all are sooo ono!)... before you leave this place, don't forget to order up some fresh and hot Malasadas (Portuguese style donuts), they come in sugar, cinnamon, or mixed... :) This place lives up to its name... everything is ono! :)

I just can't resist: ONO's should be O - NO! The good things: real chop sticks! Again, I ask myself, will I go back? The answer is no, not unless on some random outing with other non-really into sushi lovers. A couple of good deals for Happy Hour until 7 p.m. on drinks and rolls. Be aware, ALL their rolls are STUFFED with FAKE crab. If you don't this, FAKE crab is nasty! They don't even spell it "krab" and no where on the menu does it indicate its fake crab. So to my suprise, when I ordered the spider crab roll, I was highly disappointed to find it mainly missing except on the end pieces and all this fake crab and filler in the middle. The EEL roll suffered the same fate. Do I really need to go on? The happy hour Mojito Mint was good, but it was missing ice. Is that usual? The only bright spot was the sashimi combo for $22, while the chef did nothing special at all to this dish. It was just sliced fish, fresh salmon, yellowtail, albacore and tuna. We asked if they had any other fresh fish in to add and the answer was no. No saba, no snapper, nada. Their emphasis here is really more like fast-food nice terriyaki and appetizers. So, if I were stuck on an island, I'd eat at Ono's Island Cafe .... otherwise, with the wealth of good food in SD .... me thinks not.

Had the most horrible sushi here. Service was good, but the food was nasty. I ordered a regular tuna roll, and the rice was hard and dry; as if it had been left out over night. Pretty good blueberry mojito though.

Ono's, you've come a long way.. The first time I've ever been to Ono's was when it was a very small 600 square feet cafe in 2006. I'm very happy with the expansion of space and delicious menu. And is it worth the drive to Bonita? Yes. They have an excellent variety of hot tea and Boba (tapioca). If it's any one thing in the menu you should get, is their Malasadas -served freshly baked out of the oven. It's the best in San Diego so far... by me, an island girl. I should know. :)

Should have been a 2, but the food was really good. My girlfriend went here for a nice dinner. It wasn't busy and we got to seat ourselves. We sat down and the waiter got our drinks, while we looked through the menu. We had to wait about 20mins before he came back and got our order. Then we waited some more for our food to come and it didnt come all at the same time. I ordered the Kalbi Ribs which came out first and by time I almost finished it, our first roll of sushi came out. We were so irritated cause my gf was hungry waiting from her sushi, I would think that would have come out first. So, buy the time we got our second roll we were already done with the first. Service at this place was not good at all, they didnt even tell us, oh sorrry for the wait, or anything. Instead of being an hour dinner, cause we order 2 rolls and ribs, it ended up almost 2.5 hours. I gave an extra star because the food was really good, but would have been nice if we got our food in a timely matter and all together.

My husband and I have been to this place several times and the first time we waited for what seemed an eternity. It was date night so we didn't mind just having a few drinks and enjoying some QT. However we learned that the trick is to order your appetizers and food at the same time. They don't arrive together and it works for people who are in a rush. The food is great. I love the lumpia but my ultimate favorite is the teriyaki chicken pasta. they also have a good chicken wrap..mmmh! As for sushi my husband thinks it's "pretty decent" but he is used to much better since he is from Hawaii: ) They are pretty pricey but happy hour is the way to go!!

When we entered the door and were greeted by a sweet hostess, who promptly took us to a cramped table in the corner near the MONSTER fish tank. After the help noticed this was a poor place to put us they moved other tables around....better. Mom ordered macadamia crusted salmon and I the seafood dynamite. We were given a mediocre miso soup with specks of tofu and dried seaweed ( this is easy! Take a few extra min and do it right the first time). About ten min after they took our soup bowls our meals arrived. They both looked beautiful. seafood dynamite was tasty and was well presented. The salmon mom ordered also looked nice but was not cooked to her liking (she said it was squishy inside ) she did however really enjoy their version of slaw an the black rice. The desert was ok...Bond-fire it tasted good but I think it could have looked better. I think we will try it again. I hope they will show some more initiative and put together the complete package. If its worth keeping customers it's worth doing every meal right the first time!!

I CAME HERE WITH A GROUPON. I loved their almond milk tea, it was so tasty with the shaved ice. Our waitress was so polite and friendly but the food was just OK. We sat outside and enjoyed the ambiance of lovely Bonita. That's all.

I came here with my co workers. Food was delish! The decor inside is really pretty especially the fish tank. Relatively priced, just wish it wasn't so far from Point Loma!

Cool place. Was open "late" on a sunday night. Parents ordered the ramen, it was kinda curry-y but they liked it nonetheless. California rolls come with cucumber here, so I opted no cucumber. I also got the pizza roll and the jalapeño (?) roll? Well the latter had a jalapeño on top, and if removed, wouldn't be that spicy. I ordered the salmon wrap, but it was mostly vegetables. It was maybe a 5/10. There were a LOT of pescetarian friendly meal options though. Next time in town, I will try them all. Also, when you check-in to this place on your mobile, it automatically gives you a digital 50% off dessert coupon (with order equivalent to $25 or more). The e-coupon lasts for 3 hours, just take a screenshot or show it to your waiter as soon as you get it. Pretty cool! For dessert, we ordered some fruit and ice cream and mini doughnut plate, I couldn't really tell what it was because my little brothers moved their spoon around so the plate just looked like soup lol. But it was delish!!!

I lied when I said I would never come back...because I'm now a regular! Best happy hour menu in the south bay :) And the staff is incredible. Glad I gave it another try

Came in on Friday around 6PM, it was kinda busy but only had a 5 minute wait for a party of three. My dad said he was so surprised for onos to look so nice cause the plaza looks so dead.. and crappy haha. But anyways I looked at the menu and I was like DAMN this shit is pricey. But its coo cause I was eating with my parents. Pretty much all the rolls and entrees are $10+ I had the kalua pork served with rice and slaw. My mom had the kalbi ribs, and my dad had the seafood dynamite. And daaaamn, every bite was seriously worth it. All of the entrees had a rich taste to it, it wasn't like any l&l bullshit haha. It was actually legit! We definitely got what we payed for. We also got calamari cause it was happy hour. I was actually pretty bummed that they didn't fill up the whole plate.. but it was still good nonetheless. I would reccommend this place forsure! I gotta try the sushi next time tho, cause it all sounds tasty. Oh yeah they also got really cute waitresses HAH!

I was craving malasadas and ONO'S answered my prayers! Although their malasadas cannot beat Leonard's Bakery (obviously) but it does the job. I mean, I can't expect much since I'm in the mainland. As far as the food, they have both Hawaiian food as well as Japanese Sushi. Their happy hour is also worth checking out since it's super cheap. Overall, good service, good selection of food, good quality, and MALASADAS!!!...what more can I say? Now here's a question: where can I got some good malasadas in San Francisco?

Had dinner there last night with family, and it wasn't great. The staff was nice, but a bit sloppy in service. For instance, edamame came out after appetizers, along with our entrees -- by then, we didn't really want it anymore, but still ate it. They forgot our order of calamari, so I brought it to the waitress' attention before the check came (like I said, the window for eating appetizers is short) and asked her to not charge us for it. Of course, they charged us, but then removed it when we brought it to their attention again. We also ordered the house wines. My husband was charged $10 for his cab, while my chard was only $7. For this place's price point, I think $10 for a house cab is a little steep (unless we were wrongly charged, didnt bother to ask). The food is good. My chicken teriyaki was grilled nicely and very juicy. The 2 for 1 sushi rolls for the late night happy hour are a good deal. Our daughter loved their taro milk tea (it's huge) and their hot teas come in a novel little brewer. If looking for a happy hour place, consider that they have two on most days -- one is from 4-7, the other from 7-10, and they don't include the same specials. I was disappointed because we took our family there based on our past lunch experience. I think the staff just needs better timing and possibly more training.

Went here armed with a Sign on SD deal coupon, and we were pretty happy with our food choices. It was our first time here, so we really had no idea what we were ordering and unfortunately there were no pictures in the menu to give an idea of what you're getting. You really have to read through the menu to select what you want. You pay more for the food here because of the presentation not necessarily due to taste. I ordered an $18 Seafood Dynamite platter. Presentation was really pretty and it did taste awesome! The salad was good, but the papaya relish was terrible. The shredded papaya is not supposed to be mushy. There's supposed to be some crunch when you bite it. The calamari was good. We requested tempura flakes on top of our shaka roll, and it turned out pretty good.

Love this place! This is my new go to sushi spot. I love the Hawaiian flare they add to all their dishes. My favorite rolls are Crème de la Crème, Onolicious, and you have got to try the new Zen roll. Perfect balance of sweet and salty, tangy and crunchy! They have an amazing selection of hot fresh teas, my fav is Vanilla Coconut. The services is also great, very friendly happy people

Ono's Cafe has an excellent happy hour menu. Happy hour menu allows me to try a variety of different things when I'm there. My girlfriend usually orders different types of sushi rolls and I like to try the different appetizers. Specifically the bulgogi fries. They also started serving ramen not to long ago and if you're a fan of curry... Then I highly suggest the curry ramen.. Definitely worth it...

This was my first Hawaiian food experience so I wasn't sure what to expect. We got the appetizer sampler which had egg rolls, edamame, and dumplings. It was good, as another reviewer stated it came in it's own unique sauce which was very heavy in vinegar which burned my lips at first, but it did grow on me. I got the Pork for my meal which was suppose to be the most common hawaiian dish, which is what I wanted. I was disappointed when it came out because it looked boring, and at first tasted boring, but it definately grew on me. Maybe it was initially bland after the vinegar edamames! I finished the entire plate it was so good! Now we got the cheesecake roll dessert (I forget the name) and it was REALLY sweet. I'm not a huge sweet person so it was a little bit much for me, but paired with the ice cream it was actually pretty good. NOW, everything up to this point was good, I'd given it a 4-5 start HOWEVER a server (not even our server) had the nerve to come up to us and said said "are you guys gonna pay?" because they gave us the check but we were too engrossed in our conversation we were not ready to pay. I can't believe he had the nerve to say that to us!! He wasn't even our waiter! We felt so uncomfortable and he just stood there looking at us waiting for us to figure out the payment. After like 2 mins he was like "do you guys need a minute?" ummmmm NOT COOL , so he left and we proceeded to the counter to pay since they were in SUCH a rush to get rid of us. Well we stood at the counter for another 10 minutes (I went to the bathroom, came back, and my friend went to the bathroom, and came back) and no one even came to take our payment. I was so pissed! That's never happened to me..ANYWHERE The food was good though...

Ono's Cafe has always offered a very unique and delicious menu. My favorite dish to order here is the Seafood Dynamite. Unfortunately, it was a bit overcooked when I came here last Friday for dinner. It is definitely much busier nowadays compared to when it first opened up years ago but I don't want to think that just because they're busier and have an expanded menu that it would affect the quality of their food. Hopefully this was just an off night and when I return to order my usual dish, it'll taste just as good as I remember it. The service was very good. I was in a large party and we did not wait long to get any of our orders. They were even nice enough to service us ice cream with our malasadas which was a great combination for dessert.

Does anyone not like fresh sushi, great salads, and awesome Hawaiian food? Their Bento Boxes are the perfect lunch, with just the right amount of soup, two entrees, and 2 sides. When your finished, why not enjoy fresh, hot malasadas - which is a Hawaiian Doughnut, but so much tastier when they are hot (with sugar or cinnamon). Dine outside on the patio (lanai), or inside by the giant fishtank (no wonder the sushi is so fresh). Enjoy a smoothie, or loose leaf tea. This place is Ono (The Best).

This is the first place I ate sushi in SD. I crave for sushi when I leave Hawaii, and I am glad that the west coast have so much places that have sushi. I been to Ono's a couple times, and the experience is never consistent. You can have the best customer service but the food sucks, and vice versa. I ate there today with my son & daughter. We had edamame, some crunchy roll, spam musubi sushi, thai tea w/ bobba, calamari & malasadas. I make better edamame, that's all I can say. Everything else, me, jay.an loved. But our server was so dead. My other experience was when I ate with my family & my friend and her family. We had a bunch of order of sushi, lumpia, edamame, kilaguen, and their mixed boxed plates. I think we had one of the best servers, except our food just sucked. We ordered malasadas after and it was so hard to bite into, I couldn't even eat it. It's a fine dining experience eating sushi. I had their ahi poke salad and it would've been so good if their ahi was fresh.

OMG!! This place is AMAZING! so many delicious flavors in every bite. We made it for happy hour too! I took my husband here for his birthday, and he loved it! Now our favorite restaurant. The booths were so amazing, they were high and had a lot of privacy, this place is good for romantic night out, or even dinner with the kids! Especially good for happy hour, very, very good deals. We got the island platter, SO delicious, everything was cooked and made perfectly. We also ordered some sushi: shrimp tempura and vegetable rolls ( which happened to be half off!) and the drinks: midnight mojito, lychee onotini. The drinks were fabulous, not too strong, or weak-made just PERFECT! we ordered for entrees the teriyaki chicken pasts ( i substituted for tofu which was so good!) and the pear and mushroom salad, so many yummy flavors! For dessert they brought out a complimentary dessert. Probably one of the best desserts we had! This place is the best place we've ever eaten at. We will definitely drive the distance from OC just to eat here again!!

I ate here yesterday with my sister and her husband and we used a groupon voucher I purchased. My sister and I had been here before with one of our girlfriends and had fun, that's why I purchased the groupon voucher. When we walked in, surprisingly it was busy for a Wednesday night. Our waitress was attentive, which was nice and refreshing b/c no one likes bad service. When she saw the groupon voucher, I wasn't sure if we could use it on happy hour stuff. Originally, my sister and I were planning on ordering strictly from the happy hour menu. However, we were disappointed when we found out we couldn't use it on the happy hour menu and we could only use it on regularly priced items. How about you disclose this information on the voucher or tell us about it right away when we sit down and you see the voucher? I read the voucher to see if it was on there and if it was disclosed on the voucher, my bad if it was - I probably over looked it. On to the food and drinks. We ordered some coconut tea (yum), rootbeer, beer, 2 of the jalapeno rolls and crunchy roll (1 ticket). On another ticket we had two orders of the calamari from the happy hour menu. The jalapeno roll was good and so was the crunchy roll. However, the calamari was so gross I wanted to vomit. It didn't seem cooked, it was greasy, and just plain yucky. The calamari was tough. In short, it was the worst calamari I've had so far. My sister thought the same and I don't know what my brother in law thought. I've had better calamari and wasn't impressed at all. The food is way over priced and its only worth it to go there for happy hour in my opinion. I also got irritated when we had to ask for napkins. Aren't you supposed to bring napkins when your food arrives at your table? There was a lady sitting next to me and she had to return her food b/c the salmon wasn't cooked. Lucky for her instead of recooking the same salmon she was given that was undercooked, they just cooked a new one for her. They also gave them some type of free food for the inconvenience. Overall my dining experience was just okay. The atmosphere was fun and it appeared to be family friendly.

We discovered Ono's back in September 2013 and it just so happened to be Happy Hour. The prices were great and the food was very delicious. We since been coming to Ono's just about every Sunday. We have brought my brother and his wife for his birthday in October: they enjoyed the food so much that we brought his wife to Ono's for her birthday in November. Today, Christmas Eve, I brought the whole family out to Ono's and even my grandson thoroughly enjoyed the cuisine. As always, we had a fantastic time there. We look forward to returning back to Ono's very soon.

I gave it 4 stars, but i would've given it 4.5 if it were an option. The food was good. I had the Da Kine roll. It was yummy. The edamame comes in some sauce, not the typical steam+salt combo, and i was kinda turned off by it at first but i got used to it after a while. The food was fresh. The service fast, friendly, attentive, but not pushy. It's not in a high-traffic plaza, but had several patrons anyway. The food isn't cheap, but who really wants bargain sushi? in my mind this has become the replacement for what used to be yokozuna's- where back in the day, the food was just as good.

Check in offer only good for non happy hour items. Found dead spider on my glass of almond tea and still got charged for the drink. The least they coulda done is not charge me for the drink or honor the check in deal for 50% off the dessert. don't think i'll be coming here again. Gonna let my family and friends know bout my unhappy experience...

Ono's could possibly be my favorite restaurant in the Southbay. Nay, IT IS my favorite place to dine in the Southbay! Nestled nicely in Bonita, this place is a must if you so happen to be in the area and are looking for great food. The Hawaiian Japanese inspired fusion works! Great decor and good service and parking is a none issue. Their specialty sushi rolls, all amazing! I also recommend getting the Avocado shake or my personal favorite, the Taro chiller. You can celebrate an occasion here as well. We held my daughters baptismal party here and they were very accommodating and the spread was on point. I highly recommend this establishment.

Sushi wise, Extra Medium! : ) Just mediocre americanize rolls. This Place is really good for is on TUESDAY! happy hour 8-11, sometimes midnight. $4 sake bomb (12 0z beer w/ small saki bottle which contains about 4 shots). 2 for 1 basic sushi roll ( exp. teka maki), apptizer discounts and special drinks. Also a random D.J for the night enertainment.

We love Ono's decor, music, & food! Bento Box for lunch is a good deal. Thursday Ramen is yummy. Fish is prepared just right. Nice happy hour deals. Ono's doesn't use any MSG in anything which is a huge selling point for me! Sushi is their weakness here.

The food is way over priced $$ for the size of the serving you do actually get. There drink specialties that they claim to have created or at the very least took there own spin on are again: over priced, week in strength, and small in serving. I ordered a drink called dragons milk and it came in a small glass equivalent to a about 5-8 ounces filled half way with the actual drink and the rest with a lot of ice. it was a total rip off for its price. the servers are capable of answering most of your questions however there ability to multitask does seem to need some work. it took 4 reminders just to get a glass of water. all in all id say spend your hard earned money and time some place else. The only thing they had going for themselves was the decor. It was actually nice to look at. just don't touch anything otherwise you realize how cheap everything actually is. lol

Love coming here both for lunch & dinner. Not only do they have great food, they have good deals for both of those times. I particularly enjoyed the macadamian crusted salmon, island style, and the big easy. Drinks wise: mango mimosa & strawberry-mango soju are the bomb! For a perfect ending: bonfire!! Whenever you're there, try to get the booths instead of the table..the seats for the table seems too high for its height.

We decided to give Ono's a try last weekend. The only other time we had been there was about 6 years ago. Well, now this is going to be one of our regular places. We took our small children with us and they both LOVED the meals offered for kids. Very affordable and quality food for little ones. We also really enjoyed our meal. The ceviche appetizer dish was amazing. The staff was very friendly and really offered great service. We can't wait to go back.

I lived two years in Hawaii befor moving to San Diego so I'm always looking for Hawaiian themed restaurants. I came across Onos on yelp and had to take a look based off the pics and good reviews. I have to say that i was really impressed with this place. The restaurant has the island feel and even has some polynesian tiki flair. The atmosphere was warm inviting and then there is the food. I tried the island sampler and the island sushi roll. Everythig was great and the sushi tasted fresh. I ended the meal with some malasadas. I haven't found one other place that carries malasadas in San Diego. They are as close to Leonard's Bakery as you are going to find. I will definetly be going back to this place to finish the menu.

Great experience!! We had a coupon that we had purchased a few months ago and finally took advantage of. We weren't sure what to expect, but wow, what a wonderful surprise! We happened to go on a Wednesday and quickly discovered that they had an amazing assortment of happy hour items for half price that went well past the usual 7pm deadline - On Wednesdays, they extend their happy hour until 10pm!. So in addition to the great deal we got with our coupon, we took full advantage of half-price sushi and other great appetizers. The service was wonderful, atmosphere was bistro and food was incredible. If you've never had chicken kilaguen or malasadas - this is the place!

Worse lunch ever! We each ordered the lunch combo and we each sent them back! The grilled veggies were frozen then sautéed in oil (really?). The salad was wilted with nasty dressing. The chicken and beef is another whole other horror story. The miso soup was a package you add hot water to, it was so yucky! I am giving them a 1 star because the hand rolls we ordered were good but very over priced! We will not be going back nor will be recommend them to anyone. It made me sick!

I live in Eastlake, and trust me, this is the most decent sushi around. Yes, it's pricey - that's why I only go during happy hour, from 4-7pm daily. Basic rolls are half off, and they have drink specials too. I have only had their sushi so I can't speak for any of the hawaiian dishes.

If you want food that actually tastes good go to Onos been here 5 times and each time the food was fresh and tasty great job! I always just order basics like teriyaki chicken etc. The sushi is excellent and very creative in taste and presentation. The type of food here is what I consider "higher end more upscale" then your fast food chains.

Ate here a couple of times and enjoyed their dessert very much! On a nice day, the option to eat outside is great. We've eaten here during lunch so the prices were fair. The mango tea drink left a weird bitter aftertaste. The entrees we had were teriyaki chicken, katsu, and tempura shrimp. All needed a little bit more salt. The tempura was a miss. For the price, you only get two shrimp that are very oily compared to the shrimp offered in other places. 3-stars for the food for me, but 5 for the desserts. We had the bonfire and zenga and are worth the wait and every penny.

I've been coming here since I was a kid (my parents would always get their malasadas, it reminds them of times in Hawaii). Recently, Jay and I met a few friends here for their Happy Hour. It's pretty good. All basic sushi rolls are 50% off, their calamari and etc are discounted, and so are their cocktails. I ordered the lychee soju martini once before, which was really good. They make other flavors too, including apple, peach, ginger... But this time we opted for tea and sushi. I ordered the rainbow roll ($6@HH) which was really good. Jay ordered the kalbi ribs entree ($13), as well as a spider roll ($5@HH) and a california roll. They were all really good. Their mango tea ($3.95)is really soothing, black tea with a hint of mango. Our friends ordered the pizza roll ($10.95), the Ono roll(?), the da kine roll ($10.95). And we all had the calamari for appetizer. It was really crunchy and the sauce was a good compliment. In addition, their smoothies and desserts are all really great. The ambiance is nice. I remember coming here when our friends would perform on Friday nights, so its a great thing the management is supportive of local talent.

Best Malasadas in San Diego! They are my number one reason for coming to Ono's. They are warm chewy and just plain delicious. Besides the malasadas Ono's has great smoothies, drinks, and expansive food menu as well. Everything I have tried has been very tasty and so far I haven't heard any complaints. I usually run in buy some malasadas and a smoothie (the best one is the island princess) then run out but dining in is really nice as well. The interior is nicely decorated and their booths give a pretty good amount of privacy with their high backs. Their staff are very nice and helpful which really helps you de-stress and relax in the island atmosphere. Lastly, They also have happy hour which I hear is awesome. I haven't been to it yet but their food specials are definitely good reasons to go check it out.

Ono's Café has good food. Personally, I think the food is fusion between Japanese and Hawaiian, but not separate. I ordered the Molokai'i Salad during their lunch special for about eight dollars. The portions are decent and can fill you up. However, the service is bad. I was waiting for my food for more than 20 minutes. I was overhearing other customer's complaints about how the rice and chicken was not hot. The chicken on my salad was warm, but not hot. The Malasadas reminds of pancake puppies at Denny's. They are nothing too special, but they are tasty. The people around us talked too loud. I can overhear them two tables down. This place lacks privacy if you are trying to have an intimate lunch or dinner with a loved one.

Came here with 4 other people during Happy Hour. There was hardly anyone there so we got seated promptly. The wait staff & our waitress were very attentive, but I have to say the waitress (a young caucasion girl) exuded no personality whatsoever. Since the basic sushi rolls were 1/2 off we ordered 4 rolls (caterpillar, spider & 2 shrimp tempura) & some gyoza to start. Everyone enjoyed the gyoza, but it was agreed all around that even though the sushi rolls looked great, they were a bit 'bland'. We ordered a rainbow roll, but most of us had had our fill of sushi. A plate of fried calamari was ordered, along with chicken katsu, & I ordered the kalbi ribs. Everyone said they liked the calamari & the chicken katsu was very good. The kalbi ribs were very good (though I have had better). We finished everything off with sugar & cinnamon malasadas which everyone agreed were delicious. Despite our waitress having no personality, she was very attentive & stayed on top of meeting our needs. Food came out in a timely fashion & the restaurant decor fit the Island style theme. The basic sushi rolls were not bad, but needed more liberal use of wasabi, spices & sauces. I will need to try some of the specialty rolls next time I come here. Had the sushi been a little better I would have given them 4 stars. For now 3.5.

I really tried. I am a friend on facebook because my gf loves to drink there for happy hour and I randomly agreed to follow them on FB. SO we decided to meet there NOT on a tuesday night (the highly touted special night for cheap and good drinks and apps), and so far I think it was a mistake. The good: The service was really great. Nice staff, and very attentive. The rest: Small HH food selection, gross tasting sweet and sour sauce, frozen egg rolls which tasted awkward, expensive for just about everything, the filet satay ($15 I think??) which consisted of sugary filet equivalent to about 2 oz of meat. Before I go any further I shoud state that I am not above returning on a tuesday to sample the options, as many friends speak highly of this place, and by my date's information, they seemd to be having a bad night taste wise-and we didn't drink.... The reality is this: If I am not drinking and I want Asian food, I can think of about 347 places I would rather go to at this point...though I will not completely write them off. It was a weds. or a thursday, and I didnt order from the real menu except the Filet mignon satay, which I would never order again, even if they gave it to me for free, it still wouldn't be enough of a value at that price point. I was going to order a spider roll that night but opted out, and I am glad I did, because if they had botched that one, I wouldn't ever return. Im a food snob. I can admit it. I love good food, and I can't be bothered to tolerate mediocre food. I certainly don't want to be exposed to bad food. This food is mediocre. It is certainly not bad, but it is leaps and bounds behind "good", and "Great" can't even see it in the rear view mirror. There wasn't anything that turned me off about the place, because in fairness I didnt try their real menu, or their famous drinks. I only ordered HH menu, on an "off night". I will be back, and you will get to see my update. Until then read this whole review to understand my thoughts, or take it with a grain of salt.

Ok so I decided to try it one more time.... I ended up getting the lunch bento with chicken teriyaki and spicy crab sushi. I have to say that it surprisingly good! I was very happy....my daughter got the mini riblet bento box and I tried her and they were amazing! I ordered some malasadas and my daughter bit into it and thought it had a filing but it was that they didn't cook them all the way. I told our server and she was real nice trying to replace the malasadas with new ones but to my disappointment they ran out of them. So she ended up giving us a complimentary dessert that was like a cheese cake banana goodness " can't remember the name". Overall I had a much better experience this time around, but I will have to return just to get me some malasadas to go!

Ono's cafe was not up to my standards at all. I was so excited to try something new close to home but was sadly let down. The owners should know if they are going to charge as much as they do they should offer decent service first and second damn good food. The service on a Sunday evening was horrible. There were a few other people in that particular Sunday and there seemed to be only one waitress! It was insane. Everything seemed to take forever to get to the table. I had the teriyaki beef which was overcooked so much it was charcoal flavored. My friend had a special roll that tasted like nothing more then smoked salmon. The only thing that made the trip not a complete waste of time wast the Island Princess smoothie and the malasadas! Very good. IF I ever go again I may do a happy hour or just dessert. I was not impressed at all. Not a happy monkey!

Best so far in SD. One of the best places that I have ever ate at. I went in for lunch. They have great lunch specials. The waiter was nice and helpful. They had great rice and the food was fresh.

I went here with my husband for Valentine's Day. It was our first time here. The staff there were very welcoming and accomodating. The food was YUMMY! We had the Island Sampler which consisted of 5 pork gyozas, 5 vegetable lumpia, edamame,Thai chili sauce, ginger-soy diping sauce, masago and onion sprouts. We also ordered the Crunchy sushi and Katsu Chicken with Asian Salad and Jasmine rice. DELISH!

I haven't been here in quite awhile, but I remember them having a good seared ahi salad. So, after a walk around the golf course with my good friend, we decided to check it out. Place was crowded, good sign, it was happy hour another good sign, Also, if you check in here you get half off your dessert. So, with all those deals we had going our way the experience was quite nice. Our server was a little on the slowwww side, the half off wine wasnt flowing to quickly, we got our last glass of wine order just in time, thanks. All in all it was a nice night. Creme Brulee, yum, good thing we shared that sucker.

I'm only giving them the four star because I love their Malasadas. It's perfect for any donut lover and I think it's alot better than donut holes. Well worth the wait for it and it comes fresh and hot all the time. I would just come here for the Malasadas and nothing else. I've tried their sushi rolls but since their are other Japanese sushi restaurants that I've tried, the rolls are alright and it's a little pricey for the amount that they give you.

I can't give this place more than 3 stars until I've been here a few more times. First time newbie at this place this past weekend. Thanks Mike for suggesting this joint. I have to say the service was pretty good and our waiter was very knowledgeable and friendly. I liked the ambiance of the place. I had the Maui Wowie roll and order of Karagge. The roll itself had tuna/scallops and very spicy. Karagge was nothing to write home about, but still ok. I gotta hit up more of their signature rolls when I came back and oh yes...I will be back. Lastly, I have to mention the Malasadas (portuguese donuts). We had them sprinkled with cinnamon and it was definitely a good way to end a good meal. It was like butter.... in the sense that it just melted in your mouth. I think the malasadas alone wiped out the progress I had made when I jogged the 5 mile route around Miramar lake earlier that morning. Oh well... you only live once right?

Shine is off the apple. Yes, the happy hour prices are great but somehow, even with a restaurant.com gift certificate, we walked away feeling ripped off. The cornacopia roll was not very good - couldn't taste any distinct flavors or fish. The dynamite roll was also lackluster. Spider roll wasn't what I remembered it being. And the eel roll was just not good. Service was fine but I think I'm going back to Umi sushi at Otay Ranch Mall. They also have a happy hour and their ocean roll is so much better than anything here.

Love this place! The first time I tried Ono's about 6 years ago I wasn't very impressed, overpriced and so-so food. Luckily I talked myself into trying it again recently. The wife and I went there on a Wednesday night and were pleasantly surprised to find out that is was Happy Hour all night, awesome! Tried a couple of great tasting rolls, really tasty Bulgogi fries, and the wife's Rainbow Poke, all great! Went back a couple weeks later on a Tuesday and left happy again, more rolls, poke and Kelaguen chips this time, nothing disappointed us. Something changed (owners) in the last few years and they're doing things right there now! The only disappointing thing is the person who "greets" you when you walk in, its always the same guy, he's like a mortician on quaaludes, very complacent, very lifeless boring attitude, like he cant STAND being there. Put this kid in the back washing dishes and people would enjoy the service a lot better. Other than him the wait staff is great!

Great food the first time I ate here a couple months ago. I was looking forward to bringing my sisters there for dinner. We arrived at 930pm! They would not sit us down, not even outside. They advertise that they close at at 10pm, but will only serve you to go after 930pm. I think it is pretty ridiculous and misleading, they should change their signs. We drove off to a place that would sit us down. Chale w Ono's.

The service here is excellent! Our servers name was Miguel I think: the guy with glasses and a comb over. He recommended the best food and the best drinks for our party. Drinks and service came swiftly even with a full house. He even took the time to come back and check on us frequently when we could tell he was swamped. Friendly and efficient. Food was great also. Drinks were reasonably priced.

First time finding this jewel in the rough. Ono's will instantly become our favorite haunt, now that we moved in to Bonita just a few months ago. It's a bit misleading when you come into the plaza where Ono's is located - the building is a bit older and while there are cars in the lot, the whole place looks almost devoid of life. When u walk inside, it's pleasant, clean, if not a little run-of-the-mill for a Pacific Rim themed restaurant. The staff is extremely friendly, from the gal that sat us, to our waitress who was polite, had the timing down perfectly, and executed a very nice and attentive evening for me and my wife. OMG the food. We knew we were in for a treat with the Midnight Mojito starting us off. Fruity, but not the least bit overdone - and... u can't taste the alcohol (which could be dangerous). The mussels appetizer was wonderfully prepared and presented, with the chipotle giving the right amount of pizzaz to the shellfish. Even the miso soup was great; we're usually presented a salty or strongly flavored fare - Ono's was just right. The Mojito sushi rolls (keeping the theme alive) were such a completely new combination of flavors that if u don't keep an open mind, I'm sure some may be put off by the unorthodox pairings of fish and Mojito elements. The spider roll was good as well. The salmon dish was exemplary. Served on a three tier presentation, Asian slaw, the cherry infused "black" rice, and the salmon itself - the entire effect was wonderful. Bananas and macadamias on top of a nicely grilled piece of salmon. The balance struck between salt and sweet was pure magic. Don't even get me started on dessert. We had already eaten too much that there wasn't any way in heck we'd finish another dish... ...there was only one bite left on the dessert plate when it was taken away. And we did that probably just for the guilt at an almost vice-ridden meal. We're gonna come back; a lot. Ono's looks like a small hole-in-the-wall, not getting too big for its britches. Good move: they can focus on delivering a whole lot of great food. Time to taste the rest if the menu!!!

Usually this is a good place to have a meal, but I ordered over the phone and 15 minutes after arriving I'm still waiting for my food. The understaffed issue is becoming a big problem.

Great happy hour, would give 5 stars except for slow service. Good value and happy hour every day. We had a selection from the happy hour and regular menus and the Philadelphia roll was great. Smoked salmon was delicious. If you have room be sure to try the malasadas.

First of all, I wish I could give this place negative stars. This place plain out sucked. - We got seated and the waitress did not take our drink or food order until 15 minutes later - She served our drinks 10 minutes after that - Our food didn't come out till about an hour after that - When we asked for our appetizers, she said it was on its way and didn't come back for 20 minutes - The halibut that I ordered came with this black bean sauce that tasted like it came from the trash can of a Hilberto's. - The waitress took 20 minutes to get us the bill after we asked for it Would NOT recommend this place unless you are looking for horrible service and overpriced, bland food. Everytime I think of Ono's, I think, OH-NOOO!!!

I went to eat with my wife. We each ordered a plate and then we shared with each other . The food was great and the service was also good even though the place was busy. We finished our meal with a great desert. It's my first visit to this restaurant but it won't be my last.

I don't think there is anywhere else around that sells Malasadas so these guys automatically get a high recommendation on my book. It sucks they don't have the cream filled ones I've had in Hawaii, but it fulfills my fix for them. Took the parents and girlfriend for lunch today. My dad and I had the Moco Loco, Mom had this Seafood plate, and girl had the Teriyaki Chicken. Moco Loco was tasty and you can actually tell that they put quality beef into their burger as it has a more distinguishable taste. Though I did wish they gave me more for the $8.95 price, it was actually good for what it was. We also had the calamari for an app and it was better then most calamaris I've had. It could of been the fact that they gave this really nice soy/vinegrette sauce with it. Also had the Filet Mignon Skewers which was sort of a bust since it was $9 for only 3 small skewers of meat which comes with a salad. Since eating Hawaiian food, I've realized most portions are pretty huge so I was a little bummed out with the portions here. I sort of came out hungry even after $91 lunch for 3, but its actually ok since I had enough room for Malasadas at the end. I came out feeling happy full instead of comatose full. Only reason why I took them down to 4 stars is because it is a little on the pricey side. They did however provide tasty food so I still recommend them.

I have been there many time and tried something new every time and everything I try is great there! Their happy hour specials for food and drinks are great!!!! I have never an incident of bad service there. The sushi is so affordable and fresh. It has been hard to find a local place that is affordable, fresh, and with great service, but this has been that place for me! Their Best: Pizza Roll!!! mmm! :)

Ono's Cafe is located in a glorified strip mall... but don't be deceived! It's not that bad inside. We came for a late lunch around 3pm on a Friday and it was dead inside... too early for happy hour, but we had a restaurant.com gift certificate I was eager to use. The menu is expansive and has a lot of different appetizers, salads, seafood and sushi to choose from. We stuck with the sushi and got 4 of the specialty rolls: Da Kine, Paradise, Mojito and Creme de la Creme. Out of those my faves were the Da Kine and Paradise. The latter had mango in it which was a delicious addition. I must be on a cilantro kick because both Da Kine and Mojito both had cilantro in them... mm. The Mojito one is SPICY. From the looks of their menu... Happy Hour is 4-7pm Monday through Friday and includes half off the basic rolls and some drink specials. Apparently they have DJs playing Tuesday nights... might be willing to check that out for a livelier scene!!

I've never been disappointed with the food here. Sadly, we were quite disappointed with the service the last time we had dinner. Although we were seated promptly, our server William was nowhere to be seen except when came time to deliver our food. What's most disappointing is that we weren't offered water, to say the least, and not once did he return to our booth throughout our meal to check if all was okay or if we needed anything. What instilled our reason to consider frequenting this restaurant was the fact that another server, Alicia, happened to be tending to the booth next to us, and she was quite attentive. We resorted to having to interrupt her in catering to us, and she was most accommodating. Don't get me wrong; Ono's serves fabulous dishes. We just ended up leaving with a bad taste in our mouth regarding the service.

First Time here. The decor is good and very festive. Kinda hidden within a shopping center in Bonita, but good gem. One thing irked me was that the waitress sat us down but did not even mention that it was Happy Hour and the specials. Just gave us the menu's. I only found out by seeing the little table sign with desserts and happy hour items. I wanted chicken Kelaguen, but it wasnt on the menu, but it was on their happy hour menu. So i had to order it after the fact (after I noticed the happy hour menu). The food could've been better. It wasnt as flavorful as I would've liked. But it was still good nonetheless.

Had lunch here the other day. I ordered one roll and some gyoza (spelling?). The service was extremely friendly and prompt. The one roll I ordered, Paradise Roll, was very fresh and tasty. I will take my family back here. However, it was a bit more expensive than I expected. The roll I had was $17. The gyoza was reasonable. Either way, I don't have a problem paying for it if it tastes good. Discount sushi makes me leery sometimes unless I know the fish is fresh.

"Island Style Bistro" = Fusion. Salads, appetizers, sushi, wraps, Hawaiian and Japanese fusion entrees, specialty desserts, kona coffee, a billion teas, etc etc. But, what do I care about more than anything else on the menu? Malasadas. Malasadas = Portuguese doughnuts, rolled in sugar and/or cinnamon. Fluffy, warm, sweet pillows of heavenly deliciousness that remind me of my Grandma's version. You get 9 decent sized malasadas for $3.95, and they give you fair warning to order them early, because it takes a little more time to make. Heads up, if we eat here together, I will eat all of them. I don't care.

I first came here when Ono's Cafe just sold boba but after it expanded into a restaurant, it has definitely come up. Even when they first expanded, I honestly thought their entrees and sushi were too expensive. But prices have since come down. I basically come here now for their lunch specials. But my absolute favorite is their salmon wrap. A friend and I will usually split the salmon wrap and a salad and it's a perfect portion. Their malasadas are awesome too. I've only been to their happy hour once and from what I remember you can get some really good martinis and some sushi for cheap. The food is always presented beautifully and service for me has always been great.

Great food, good prices. Try the teriyaki chicken pasta, Molokai salad, the beef lumpia, and their Panko crusted salmon is great as well. Service is usually pretty good, but the reason I love to go here......the zenga. A cheesecake rolled in a tortilla like wrap fried with ice cream and sauteed bananas on the side. My favorite desert of all time. Only reason for 4 stars. Inconsistency with they're food. I've been here a good 30 times. 90% of the time it's great. Ohh yea food presentation is amazing as well.

Ono's Cafe have good food & prices. However, even if there is a few people in there you will be waiting a while before getting your drink, appetizers, & entree. The waiter we had yesterday had to be reminded to get my daughter's coke & we had to ask another waiter for refills. Great happy hour food & prices. I always go for the calamari & CA roll.

I didnt really enjoy my meal at all. I guess I was expecting more of a traditional sushi resturant. They dont offer chef specials or no reccomendations. Rolls were warm, salty, and seaweed was tough.

Ono's is an awesome little gem in Bonita. Go during happy hour! Basic sushi rolls are half off. You're not going to find a better sushi place at those prices. Last time we were there we ordered the spicy tuna, spicy salmon, shirmp tempura, spider roll and volcano roll and a margarita. The bill came to $28 with tax!!

So yet another one of my surprises that didn't really surprise my +1 in crime, but finally made it to Ono's to try their food, AND finally made it inside the place and stayed longer than to just use the bathroom. The interior of the place is pretty nice. The high backed booths offer some privacy so you're not really looking at other people and that's kind of nice. I would give this place 5 stars, but we got sat pretty much all the way in the back corner of the place and really no one was there. My partner in crime and i have been on mini missions to find A. wicked good taco Tuesdays and 2. wicked good sushi spots. So here is the lowdown on the sushi here at Ono's. I had to order some Sake because my counterpart has never tried it. So we took a look at the sake menu and she came up with this cold sake and i don't remember the name but it was milky white and had a coconut after taste to it. NOT bad! I was kind of disappointed tho because they no longer carry the fruit flavored yummy sake i had before. Now for the Sushi!! So here is a list of what we ordered... Créme de la Créme Roll, On the inside was crab, cream cheese, shrimp tempura, and the outside smoked salmon, eel, avocado, macadamia nuts, my partner isn't to fond of eel and well i pretty much at that whole roll on my own, Oh well it was good =) and the best of i liked out of the 4 that we had ordered. Da Kine Roll, on the inside spicy crab, cucumber, On the outside, avocado, spicy salmon, cilantro, Not half bad, I'm not a huge fan of cilantro in sushi but both times i have had it its been alright. Paradise Roll, On the inside spicy albacore, cucumber, On the outside, fresh salmon, mango, avocado, microgreens, sweet plum sauce. This i don't remember standing out as AWESOME but this was the second time ihave had mango with Sushi and well what a nice mix. The last roll was the Mojito Roll, On the inside, spicy tuna, cucumber, yama gobo, On the outside, yellow tail, avocado, lime slices, cilantro. This one i enjoyed second most. The little slices of lime on top gave a nice tang to it. All of the rolls that were we ordered we good no doubt. I would be willing to go back to try some of the other rolls they have, but maybe with the coupon that my +1 is soooo good at finding. The place is a little on the pricey side as far as sushi goes so that's another set back for the 5 star award. We also missed happy hour by an hour, that what we get for being early.

Went there for dinner recently and a friend and I had sushi. It was gross! The fish was dry and it was just all wrong. I used to be a big fan but not anymore. Maybe someday I will go back for another chance but no time soon.

This place has been here awhile, and for most of it's existence, it had been a little shop where you could get a boba drink, a wrap, or a dessert. I went in here a few weeks ago thinking it was that same place - it's totally different. I guess that in the last year, they've expanded to twice the size and it's now a full service restaurant. I've since had a few meals here, and the food is GREAT. As a fusion place, they've put a really nice twist on traditional items. Here's some of the things I've ordered and will definitely order again: Avocado shake with boba (order this first and it will keep you busy until your food comes) Edamame (huge bowl!) - it's different but great - served warm with a sauce so that you put the whole thing in your mouth Kalua pig - wow, that first bite had so much flavor Kalbi Short Ribs - pretty darn good for a non-Korean place Pork Medallions - basically, tonkatsu with a great sauce Mojito Roll (sushi) - nice presentation and you'll love the lime twist Miso Soup - way better than your typical miso soup, lots of seaweed with a thick broth What's cool about this place is all the attention to detail. Each entree has a unique salad made especially to compliment the flavors of that entree. The service has also been good everytime I've been, so come and check this out!

I'm from Hawaii so for the very time I tried my very first malasadas in SD other than Leonard's (famous Hawaiian malasadas joint) and it was ONO oNO oooonoooo ONOOOO with french vanilla ice cream. Two thumbs up...love the cinnamon ones and love the setting...and love the fish tank. I haven't tried their sushi or other stuff there but I WILL DEF GO BACK FOR MORE MALASADAS!!

Pretty disappointed with the spicy rolls. It seems as if they just drizzled hot sauce on the fish and wrapped it with rice/nori. The rolls came loose after picking up with the chopstick - sushi should not do this. The only good thing that was served was the Bonita roll was yummy. The decor was nice. The servers were nice as well.

Ono's is a cute little hole in the wall spot in Bonita that can easily get overlooked. Went here with the boyfriend, daughter, and the bf's parents and made reservations for dinner. It's a very small venue and if you can, try to make reservations cause you never know if it will be full or not. We had a party of 5 and I didn't want to take any chances delaying getting our eat on. A very friendly and hospitable atmosphere, you walk in and see the modern island theme. Very cool, especially the 700 gallon fish tank in the corner. They have great happy hour specials, between 4-7, and drink specials later in the evening. I had ordered the terriyaki beef plate and it was not what I had expected. Usually when you order terriyaki beef plate you think beef with some terriyaki sauce and rice. Nope, this plate came with a salad with some type of ginger dressing (different but very tasty!), some white rice, and beef strips marinated in authentic terriyaki sauce with sauteed vegetables on top. It was very delicious and definitely something I can order again. If I could finish it I would have but I was so full! My daughter had ordered the creme de la creme sushi which was sprinkled with crushed macadamia nuts. She obviously enjoyed it cause she was nothing but smiles as she was eating. The roll was nicely presented and were the large rolls. Very filling and she was definitely satisfied. My boyfriend ordered the chicken katsu, lightly breaded chicken. Very moist and tender and it came with a very good katsu sauce. The parentals had ordered the halibut and salmon and they said it was very good as well. I didn't have a chance to try it but what they ordered was pretty much finished which speaks highly about the food. In addition, we had ordered the spam masubi and mind you I've tried many and you think you can't have it any other way, they do it in a sushi roll but they have a very good terriyaki sauce in it which takes it up another notch from the others. A must to try. We also tried the ahi poke which I was let down on since it was very small and there was too much going on with the other vegetables they added. It took the flavor away from the actual tuna. Their sweetened and flavored iced green teas are very refreshing and you're given the option of adding boba. For closure, we had the kahlua creme brule, so very good and creamy, perfectly blended, smooth, and the top was nice and crispy. They present it to you still burning so make sure you blow out the flame before you dig it, you don't want to leave without eyebrows. Very clean, great service, and a great hole in the wall to check out. A little on the pricier side but worth it for a nice dinner out with some friends and family.

I really like this place! The atmosphere is very nice (check out the huge fish tank) and the sushi was good. Very filling. I went with my friend and her daughter. I ordered the Big Easy. It was delish. It had cream cheese and smoked salmon in it. My friend's daughter is a big fan of Creme de la Creme. That ish was on point. It had tempura shrimp in it. I can't remember what my friend got, but it was hella good too. The prices weren't too bad either. Two things I wasn't digging: they don't have seaweed salad, and the miso soup wasn't anything to write home about. In fact, it wasn't even hot when it was served. And it tasted like styrofoam (if I knew what styrofoam tasted like, this would be it). I would definitley go back, as one roll was soooo filling and the service was decent.

Went over there with a few friends for a going away party last night and the food was delicious. Had the Honey dipped shrimp tempura, california hand roll and pizza roll. Great food that looks good and packs great flavor. The Sushi is out of this world. Chef Ed says that he concentrates on flavor that satisfies your taste buds. Great if you are dieting and don't want to feel stuffed, but the flavor and aroma will fill that need!

my cousins n i were in the mood for food. that usually means any of the half dozen or so "go-to" southeast san diego staples for sustenance. chinese, thai, hawaiian, italian, filipino, southern, pretty much anything.. but no, we opted for japanese and for close. we didnt wanna drive out of the way for a decent bite to eat so out comes the iphone and yelp* is in full effect. its 4pm- happy hour and 1/2 off basic rolls. first off, the only thing basic about the sushi rolls be da name, boy. the flavor packed in them little balls of rice, nori, krab, and goodness is bomb. we got an order of calamari and turns out that its probably one of the best plates of 10 armed cephalopod mollusks ive ever had. ever so lightly breaded and "to the tooth" and to the dome

After years of eyeballing yelp and reading their reviews for free, I finally decided to create a yelp account just after trying this little sushi place..and not for good reasons. My three friends and I came in around 8pm on a Sunday night, not sure what to expect. The atmosphere was quiet, dim (good place for a first date!) and pretty small and the waitress seated us promptly. Everything went smoothly until we actually started ordering the food- the waitress was so inattentive and didn't know how to serve us!! The service was absolutely horrible because: -The waitress gave my friend a LUKEWARM cup of tea instead of the beer she ordered -When I asked her for the Thai milk tea, she first said that there was only Thai tea and was ignorant if there was Thai MILK tea (she corrected herself after looking at the menu) -She served my friend and I two bowls of miso soup because we ordered entreees and the two bowls of miso soup were different in color. My friends' was almost clear and very very SALTY and she didn't even get to two spoonfuls before she had to put it down. -My other friend ordered lumpia and the waitress asked if she wanted lumpia as an appetizer or a meal, and when my friend asked what the price difference was, she said she had no idea and that there was no difference b/w appetizer and meal. WTF?! she had to go double check with the prices because she was absolutely clueless. -When we handed her our money she asked across the counter to my friend that she was 10 cents short of her cash.. while she should have walked across and let my friend know instead of YELLING at her that she was short of change. -when our rolls came out (we ordered three different rolls) a different waitress didn't even bother telling us which ones were which. awkwardd. in other words.. very VERY POOR SERVICE. our waitress didn't know ANYTHING and it was very frustrating. as for the food: i ordered the katsu chicken and my friend ordered the teriyaki beef bowl or something similar to that. the only thing that was good on my plate was the salad, but other than that, the chicken was really REALLY dry and the rice was very ordinary too (i was hoping for sticky rice). My thai milk tea and my friend's beer tasted watered down and bland- just stick to ice water IF you every visit this place!! The only good thing about this place were the rolls, but I would suggest you go someplace else where they sell rolls for half off because the prices were absolutely outrageous (at least for college students). I don't think i will EVER go back here again- i can find cheaper and yummier rolls at sushiya in the otay plaza. p.s. they seriously need to clean out the fish tanks or the poor fishes will get eaten by the algae.

I really like the laid-back vibe of Ono Cafe. The dining room is nice, not overdone and not pretentious. The servers there have been friendly and very attentive at each of our visits, and that's a big plus. Highly recommend the teri chicken wrap (though it does get a little messy when the sauce soaks through the wrap, but good flavor)! Also good is their calamari, the caterpillar roll and edamame. All basic, but done well. I can't rave a great deal about their malasadas, as the bar was set high for me (think Leonard's on Oahu), but they're not bad! Easy to find and plenty of parking. Ono's is a good choice for island-inspired dining.

I live in New York and I'm one of those people who says that "food simply doesn't taste as good outside of New York". I know this is exaggerating but I do often believe it. If it were true, Onos Cafe is most definitely an exception. This was one of the best places I've dined at in a long time. Firstly, the atmosphere was really "chill". I love restaurants that aren't too loud, where you can actually hear the person you're talking to. Onos Cafe is one of those places. They play great, relaxing music at a volume that is completely reasonable. The food is superb. I had the Macadamia Encrusted Salmon with banana sauce and it was a unique dish. My niece had an interesting seafood salad. At this Hawaiian bistro, you'll find an interesting variety of signature dishes and sushi rolls that are uniquely Hawaiian. It's a great spot in a great area of San Diego. We had terrific service there too.

This place is aight. Granted it was about 5 mins away from where I used to live. Sushi is kinda pricey in my opinion. If I was gonna pay that much I would have gone somewhere else. The happy hour selection wasn't all that great either.

Place is good. Way too over priced though. Inside the restaurant is really nice; has that hawaiian feel to it. Will go back when I am a baller.

Yummy, malsada's good. seaseme chicken sauce aweful (use the sweet sauce they give with the lumpia) instead. cali rolls big and yummy. 15% off coupon if you live in CV and get the coupon books. They have M-F happy hour. Drinks look pretty good. food menu limited.

Giving this place 4 stars only because the service tended to be more Hawaiian style than I would prefer. Food was really really good though. We had softshell crab, sampler, honey popcorn shrimp for apps and our table had the teri chicken wrap, kalbi ribs and ahi tuna app for dinner. Everone LOVED their food, nice and hot/fresh when the food arrived, very tasty and beautifully presented. This place is a GEM hidden in the back of an old strip mall in Bonita. It's casual and very friendly. We'll be back for sure! OH and we had 2 orders of the malasadas for dessert, it's not Leonard's but I'd come back just for those little fried pieces of heaven mm mm gooooood.

This review is strictly for the malasadas; I liked it very much. Only draw back is they use a paper bag to pack it. I don't need to be reminded how bad they are for you when the bottom part of the paper bag is soaked with oil.

cheap sushi. cute place. i love the decor. service was hella slow!!!! sushi rolls were ok. they fell apart when i would pick them up. calamari was average. i would def come back during happy hour.

Great food and excellent presentation. The ambiance was charming, a Hawaiian theme fused with Asian accents. I had the macadamia encrusted salmon. To die for! Check out their website and drool over the pictures. You also have to try all the desserts. I was having dinner with the family and we all each ordered something different from the dessert menu. The winner was the Zenga 8!!!, a Cheesecake filled crisp tortilla rolled in cinnamon, served with flambéed bananas, vanilla ice cream, macadamia nuts, and caramel. Wear a helmet when you eat this so you won't make a mess when it blows your mind!

A nice quaint find in Bonita. The only thing worth coming here for are the malasadas and the drinks. It's a cool place to chill out if you're local and you don't feel like driving far.

I recently went to Ono's for happy hour. Although their hh menu was small, it was very enjoyable (50% OFF). My friend and I each had a pizza roll and we shared the edamame and a strawberry banana smoothie. After, my friend ordered Malsadas--donut-like balls rolled in cinnamon or sugar. We ordered a side of ice cream and they were great together. For a sushi place in Bonita, it isn't bad at all.

Three of us went here last Friday to try the place out. The hostess who greeted us was cheerful and seated us right away even though we did not have a reservation. The place was nicely appointed - the decor was tastefully done and kept with the image they wanted to promote. Our service was also good to very good. Now for the food - one word: BLAND! I had their Kahlua pig with slivers of cucumber salad. The meat was too bland for my taste - I had to put extra salt and pepper to perk up the taste and even that did not do the trick. I had to pour some of the dipping sauce we had from our appetizer and that added some flavor to my dish. The cucumber salad that I had was tasteless. My friend's salad had a nice taste to it so I asked another server whether mine was supposed to taste like that. She seemed irritated and pointed out that we had 2 different kinds (though I never recognized what the difference was). Anyway, I asked for extra serving of dressing for mine. When I poured it and let it soaked for a few minutes, that made a ton of difference. My friend had the halibut. I tasted his dish and it was also bland. The accompanying bed of beans was too salty for my taste. Perhaps the idea is to mix two of them together to blend the taste? The halibut was small in size, considering that it is one of the more expensive items in the menu. My other friend's dish was okay but not that great, too but I think better than the two that we ordered. BTW, we ordered their appetizer combo. It never came and when we asked our server about it, she inquired from the kitchen and said that it was delivered to another table. She did a nice thing though - she comped us for the delay. Will I go back? Not very likely.. But I believe in second chances and I may after visiting other places that I would like to try first.

I have been to Ono's over 10 times. The seafood, especially the salmon is outstanding! The presentation of the food on unique plates is fantastic. My only regret is that the restaurant is not larger.

The extra star is for the parking convenience. Waaaaay too much hype for this place. Definitely overpriced. I've been here several times because couple of people in my group like it there. Last time I went here the server took way too long and forgot about us. When we mentioned we wanted to order another drink before happy hour ends (hinting he was gone way too long, about 20 minutes, and we hadn't ordered food yet) he said, "yeah, well you still have time". (Yeah...luckily we flagged you down, instead of tackling you!) The semi-good thing about this place was they let my group of four stay for longer than the usual hour/hour-and-a-half restaurant time as it was toward closing time, but the owner/manager was hovering over our table. We probably would've got the hint better if they cleared our table instead of letting things pile up. Worst thing about the server was that instead of giving us the extra few bucks cash change back (some paid with credit card), he kept if for himself as tip. What a jerk! Last I heard, tips were earned, not stolen. Food was just okay. I've definitely had better. I would be more understanding about the wait if place was packed, but it wasn't. I'd be more forgiving if it was my first time there, but as usual, they kind of sucked. I really hope my friends don't want to go back there and instead try something new. I'd rather go to Macaroni Grill and risk eating a Caesar salad with a million calories. If your food is going to be "meh", then Ono's...find it in yourself to go out of the way with customer service.

This is an awesome Hawaiian-Asian Fusion style restaurant. I haven't had the sushi yet, but i'm sure it's really good, cause one of the owners used to roll sushi at Yokozuna's. The teas and other drinks are great, the wraps are my favorite, the desserts are yummmmy, and most of all the staff is wonderful and very friendly. Oh yeah...and Last by certainly not least...my other favorite reason for visiting, is to get my MALASADA fix. Once ordered (if you like sweet, and fresh outta the fryer treats like me) you'll keep coming back for some more. So far, this is the place where you can get malasadas. If you know another place, please let me know. thanks.

  • Oh So Fresh B.

I haven't tried the meals here, but the dessert is great! Especially the Malasadas.. even though NOTHING can beat Leonard's Malasadas in Hawaii, Ono's is the closest one to it. Try the Xanga dessert too!

  • J F.

My husband and I love Onos! We only come during the happy hour because you can't beat the price. The sushi is irrestistible, especially the pizza rolls. The service is fine enough, but it is the food that keeps Onos on the top of out restaurant picks. I highly recommend this place and always take my relatives here when they come in town.

yum! i ordered the kalbi ribs as the main entree, avocado shake with boba for the drink and Portugese doughnnuts for dessert. my friends and i were extremely pleased with how the food tasted. their service was also excellent. we came in late around 10pm on a Saturday (usually closed by 11pm) but we never felt rushed. we were the only customers in the restaunt too. the ambiance of the interior was also nice. i'll be back here again.

  • Leilani P.

I came in for happy hour my first time here. The happy hour prices were decent- 50% off a small list of sushi rolls, cheap spam musubi, cheap fruit martinis, 30% off beers and a few other things. The other menu items seemed waaaay overpriced for what it was, so I stuck to happy hour. I didnt expect much and I got what I expected- not much. A tad less than mediocre service, which I was disappointed with since all of the reviews seemed to be good, and because it wasnt busy at all! Probably won't be back- there are way better Japanese happy hours.

  • Brent S.

I've been going there since the beginning, and have seen this place evolve from a small take-out/ 3 table setup to a full on dine in restaurant. they started off with just the smoothies/boba/malasadas and tea, but everything they add to the menu is delicious. Great service, as well.

We ended up driving all the way out to Bonita in search of good sushi, and in the end we left Ono's Cafe feeling that the drive out there was completely worth it. We originally were under the impression that they only served sushi, but upon looking over our menus we realized that this was a fusion restaurant, with their own twist on island classics including dishes from Hawaii, Japan, the Phillipines, Vietnam, among others. I had been craving sushi so I ordered a mojito roll, and the mushroom pear salad as my entreee. The mojito roll was fantastic- the fish was extremely fresh and the flavor was great. The salad was good too. It consisted of greens, candied walnuts, miso-raspberry vinagrette dressing, poached pears and warm sauteed mushrooms. The other people I was with also ordered sushi, which they liked a lot, along with miso soup and kalua pig. The miso soup was wonderful. It was a little thicker than most miso soup and had fresh green onion in it, along with the seaweed and perfectly sized tofu cubes. As for the Kalua pig, they both said that they preferred traditional Kalua Pig over the "fusion" version at Ono's. For dessert we ordered two orders of their malasadas to go and brought it home where everyone, including my 82 year old Portuguese grandmother who was born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii, gobbled them all up. They were a huge success and tasted almost exactly like the malasadas in Hawaii.

It's Friday afternoon and I got a call that I didn't have to go into work. SWEET! Ok, now time to make plans. I get a friend and decide to check this place out. I had read service was bad but I thought they'd shape up by now. We got there and the hostess was no where to be found. we waited about 5 min and then she takes up to a table that had yet to be cleaned. We sit down wait another 5-10 min to be acknowledged by the waitress (who was kind of snooty). We could have made happy hour drink specials but the waitress took too long. Ugh! I had the onotini and it was ok. The roll was ok not the best. I'll try this place one more time but I was excited to try this place and was disappointed. I guess the service is what killed it for me. I mean you got 3 waiters for a small dining area and you can't take care of your table. I was going to leave a $2 tip but my friend said that was harsh, so I left 3 (and I usually leave a good tip since I get tips at my job and know this is crucial in making a living)

I've been to Ono's many times in the past, before their renovation, and this past Saturday, the food and service went beyond my expectations! Their happy hour specials include food and drinks. We came past happy hour but I still enjoyed a lychee martini and my sister had the strawberry martini. The boys ordered a pitcher of beer. The martinis were excellent. They were sweet with hints of soju. As far as the food went, we ordered an abundance of it and everything that we ordered delivered good quality, consistency, and flavor. The rolls we tried were the pizza roll, the mojto roll, the da kine roll, and the onolicious roll. We also ordered the calamari as an appetizer. For the meals: teriyaki chicken pasta, halibut, chicken katsu, and kalua pig. The portions were generous and all too delicious. To top it off, we had the brownie dessert and malasadas to go. The brownie dessert was so decadent and moist. The malasadas are always enjoyable and reasonably priced at $5 for 10. This is probably one of my favorite restaurants in the Bonita/Chula Vista area. The hawaiian fusion cuisines are all designed to please most everyone's palate. :)

its nice to see a cozy little sushi spot in bonita. the quality of the fish is great. the rolls are a little too pricey for their sushi. i like the vibe. very island like. check it out of if you're in the area. plenty of parking...away from the crazy scene and traffic of downtown/mission valley/northpark areas.

A very nice place. I liked the decor and the sharp, classy feel of the restaurant. Their theme was sort of Hawaii meets Easter Island meets Japan-type thing. I had the teriyaki chicken wrap which was huge and satisfying. Eaten with a huge iced tea, it was all I needed for a meal. I would definitely go again.

I love Ono's! My favorite thing to get is the Teriyaki Chicken Pasta with the teriyaki chicken on the side. It's $16, but it's delicious! The cocktails are also really good and so is the sushi. Happy Hour is until 7PM (:

So my husband and I just moved to Bonita and wanted to find an awesome Sushi place. We've tried many all over San Diego and as many Sushi restaurants there are there are very few that we walk away and think "wow that was good lets go back." This was one of those wow places. Apon walking in, the atmosphere was very quaint and cozy. A mixture of Hawaiian/Asian Fusion decor. We sampled a little bit of everything from the menu. Their menu is also quite extensive. For non sushi lovers they also have a very large selection of Beef and Poultry Entrees. The portions are also very good. instead of the norm 6-8 rolls they give you 10 and they are actually a size that you can fit in your mouth unlike some rolls that are so big you look like a blow fish while eating them. Our server Dan was also very attentive and friendly. He recommended a desert at the end of the night which was amazing. We devoured it in seconds. It was called Zenga which was a Cheesecake filled crisp tortilla rolled in cinnamon, served with flambéed bananas, vanilla ice cream, macadamia nuts, and caramel. YUM! My husband and I will be visiting this place again soon and plan on making it a local favorite.

one of the better hawaiian restaurants, as far as atmosphere, service, and food goes. it's very cute and cozy, and whenever the owner is in, he always makes it a point to greet us and check up on us. mine and my hubby's favorite dishes are the wraps, the salmon entrees, and the teriyaki chicken pasta.

Place is GREAT!! Went here on my lunch break, and the service was quick nice, the food was well prepared and the ambiance was super cool with tiki guys all over the place, wanted to thank the owner Edward but he wasn't there, so ill do it here. Thanks Edward I love Onos!!!

I was looking forward in going to ono sushi when I got there I was not greeted and I waited for 5 minutes to be acknowledge and that is because I had to yell and ask if I could sit myself down because the waitress was to busy chatting it up in the corner, after one bottle of saki and 3 different sushi orders I was feeling much better the food is great but the service could be much better, I also didn't want to ask the waitress for anything thing else since she had a face as though she just wanted to go home. Just for that I won't be going back.

Overall I the enjoyed the food and atmosphere at Ono's. Although the seating inside appears limited, there is outdoor patio that can also accommodate customers. The service was very good and the Happy Hour Specials were very reasonably priced. The food dishes contain good size portions and I felt that I got good value for the price paid. Although I won't come here to celebrate a big event, in particular due to the size of the restaurant, I would definitely go to Ono's on other occasions based upon my visit.

Food was alright. The zenga dessert was good, but the service was atrocious. The first time I visited, it took 40 minutes just to get my dessert. I decided to come give it another try, and although our waiter was friendly and the service was a tad bit quicker, it still took way too long for a restaurant that was slow at that hour. the manager didnt accept the Yelp discount from the Yelp app that I presented. What's the point of posting a discount on Yelp when they won't accept it? I came out very disappointed and will not be coming back.

We went here for lunch today and left very impressed. The decor was fantastic, we were greeted by a very friendy hostess and our server was very nice and knowledgable. I had the chicken teriyaki lunch plate and my wife had one of the bento boxes. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed our lunches. We only get to Bonita once a year as we live on the east coast, but we are hoping to come back to Ono's on our next visit. I highly recommend trying this place out.

Love their Happy Hour specials! M-F 50% off basic rolls is pretty good. It might be hard to get a table in the middle of happy hour on a Friday but if you come at the beginning of happy hour during any other weekday, getting a table should be no problem. Also love the drinks. Lychee-tini (sp?) is yummy. Melon-tini, I'm not really a fan of - way too sweet. Minus one star: Service can be pretty slow sometimes. Been here a couple times not during happy hour and they were fabulous.

  • Lynne K.

We went back to Ono's on a Saturday night and it was only so-so. The service was SO slow and she was super flakey! The rolls were still pretty good, though there was WAY too much cream cheese in one of them. Maybe it was just that it was Saturday night and somewhat busy, but I was kind of let down by the experience... Sad times.

Great food and a great Hawaiian themed atmosphere. Highly recommended. Before anything else, I must give honorable mention to their cinnamon malasadas. They're amazing and I suggest sharing an order with friends and pairing them up with vanilla ice cream for an uber-fantastic dessert treat. Within a two week span, I must've visited this place at least 7 or 8 times, mostly for Taro Chiller boba runs, but I did manage to experience a dinner (during happy hour), their excellent malasadas, and their "Sock it to Me Tuesdays" promotion. First off, their Taro Chiller boba drink is excellent (its off their menu at the moment, but you can ask and they should be able to whip it up for you). The taro flavor isn't too overpowering, and they do a good blend, with a good amount of boba. I got this drink every time I visited. My only gripe is that, for take out, its pricey ($5.80). But when you eat-in, you get your money's worth because they put it in a big glass mug. Secondly, their happy hour dinner was fun, mostly because of the cheap sake bomb special they had going. For $6, they give you a huge glass of on-tap japanese beer (at the time, it was Asahi), and a decent size carafe of sake. That was pretty much all I needed to "have a good time" if you know what I mean. For dinner, I had the tempura plate, which wasn't anything spectacular and it the veggies were a bit undercooked. Their "Sock it to me Tuesdays" promotion was excellent. Me and a whole bunch of my cousins came to hang out for a bit before we all headed home and we were treated to a DJ spinning some good hip hop tunes and some really great drink specials. If you're in the area, I'd highly recommend bringing some friends and sharing a glass. I'll definitely go to Onos again, only next time I'll sample their food a bit more. Cheers!

You know for a sushi joint in the Chula Vista/Bonita area, this spot wasn't too shabby. I had the 8 piece philly rolls and the 4 piece tempura rolls for the lunch hour. They had a pretty good deal on lunch specials, which I'll have to try next time. They also have good happy hour specials I will have to try at some point. The sushi was pretty good. Considering the only other sushi joint I've tried in the area is Bento Noodles (its okay) this place sushi wise is much better. The only knocks I have about this place is the day we went, they didn'thave much selection on the sodas. All they had was pepsi, root beer, and orange soda on tap. Guess they ran out of everything else that day? Other then that small glitch, service was good, waitress was very accomadating, and it was a nice lunch to have. Will come back soon.

Incredibly yummmmeeeee! A week ago I complained about not try the real food. Now i'm convinced! Me and some friends decided to come early for the happy hour. (Half off basic rolls and 30% off saki) To try some of the rolls....and the food was delicious. I tried the shrimp tempura roll, and caterpillar roll. Good sized portion and very fresh. Our waitress was super friendly and always had a smile. The ambiance was just as good probably even better this time. Happy Hour + Saki 2 me Tuesday = Good Times and Great Food!

After researching some of the local sushi joints near Chula Vista, while visiting San Diego for San Diego Comic-Con 2009, I decided to give this place a try after reading reviews. Let me tell you some thing, service was just "a - o - k." Really. Yesterday evening, it wasn't so busy, a few tables were occupied in groups of 1 (yes, solo) to 3 adults and 3 kids. s There were about 4 - 5 servers floating about the restaurant, and I don't even know how many chefs. At first, service was fine, I was being checked on every few minutes before my order of sushi came in. The Philadelphia roll is great if you don't like too much cream cheese and since it was a "Happy Hour" special, it was half priced. But i wonder, does that mean my Philadelphia roll was made smaller? I don't know. It had it a nice and not overloaded spread of cream cheese, smoked salmon, and a balanced cucumber. I also ordered the crunchy rolll which was also very tasty with cream cheese, spicy tuna, crab, and an exterior of crunchy tempura. It all seemed pretty balanced. The spam musabi was not done in the generic typical style but like a sushi cut roll, with the ham inside, wrapped with rice and seaweed wrap. And it was very delicious. And now, here's the part they messed up. I had placed an order for fresh salmon nigiri, just 2 pieces of salmon on top of rice. Very basic. It was nearly 7:05pm when I had placed an ordered, when I got most of my first order of food in. At around 7:25pm, I asked for the check. I was tired of waiting, and they had stopped checking up on me when they delivered my initial order of food over and I just wanted to leave. So, another server, got me my check, and I explained to her that my salmon nigiri order was never delievered and so she went back to find my original server, who came out and asked if I still wanted to the salmon and I told her "not if it isn't ready by now, I rather not" and then she explains that they had a realy big order. You know, two pieces of salmon, placed on top of rice, doesn't take longer than 3 minutes to make. I've seen it done in other sushi joints. Yet, this place, after 20 minutes, after a rush of big orders, couldn't take 3 minutes or less to place salmon slivers on top of rice? And honestly, I wouldn't have been so peeved about it, but the fact that the original server stopped checking in and didn't give me an update on the sushi. You don't wait until another server has to flag you down to update a customer, even if its just one customer, that his order will be delayed because of a massive big order. After 25 minutes? Really? The good: 1) sushi, even though the menu isn't so big. 2) some of the servers are nice 3) the decor is Hawaiian / Pacific themed, beautiful aquarium inside, the color scheme is very mild, and helps out with the overall theme... 4) the prices are average. not cheap. not expensive. just average. the bad: 1) the small sushi menu -- basics, and a few of their own.. 2) no sushi bar -- tables, tables, tables.... 3) service can be quite slowed down between orders The menu isn't really extensive, and when there is no sushi bar, it seems even smaller. If there was a sushi bar, maybe, things would have worked out better, or things would have been easier. Or maybe I would have had that salmon nigiri I was craving for..

came here for mother's day, and it was awful. sad because i have a buddy that works here and the service i received that day was just not indicative of his overall friendliness and that of the owner, which i had met a few months back during a wine & liquor convention.... anyway, this was my experience. i called saturday to make a reservation. the person who answered asked me to call back in 15 minutes (ok...) anyway, i call back and make reservations for 2:30 the next day. after church my mom, dad & i went straight to ono's. got there at 2:20. we weren't seated until 2:40. to be fair, they had tables outside, but it was cold & windy and i didn't want my mom catching the snifflies. ok so we were seated and our server (Ahi?) comes to take our order promptly (ok, ok not so bad). we order the pork gyoza ($5.95 for 5... "eh") and the calamari ($10.95... pretty decent). calamari comes out at i'd say 3:00?, gyoza 10 minutes later. so my parents and i are super hungry, and we scarf everything down by 3:15... and then we wait... and wait... and wait... until at 3:37pm the server comes back and i ask if it's gonna be any much longer for our food. (...ok so this is what really pissed me off. i mean, i was already irritated cause i was tired and hungry and so was my poor mom. i mean, that's why i made reservations THE DAY BEFORE so she wouldn't have to wait to eat.) so the server says: "sorry, it's mother's day." i try to keep my cool. in my head i'm thinking "YA SO F-ING WHAT? HOW IS THAT MY F-ING FAULT? YOU SHOULD HAVE MORE F-ING STAFF TO HANDLE THE RUSH. ITS MOTHERS DAY FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, THE F-ING MOST BUSIEST RESTAURANT DAY OF THE YEAR!!!" i mean seriously, everyone knows that... that was the most ridiculous answer anyone could give. i just found it extremely UNACCEPTABLE that my poor mom had to wait an HOUR AND 10 MINUTES TO EAT from the time of our reservation. that's honestly one of the reasons i picked ono's in the first place. i knew it was a small, quiet nice restaurant that i thought my mom would like. instead i'm embarrassed and have to apologize to my mom for the sluggish and atrocious service on HER day. /exhale... anyway, ONE BIG SHINING STAR FOR THEIR LACK OF SERVICE. ...food & decor & ambiance was very nice though... BUT WHO GIVES A FLYING F IF YOU'VE BEEN WAITING OVER AN HOUR FOR YOUR FOOD??

THE DYNAMITE SUSHI WAS.......DYNAMITE! IT EXPLODED IN MY MOUTH! (That's what she said!) I have to be honest though. If it wasn't for your food, I would have given this place 3 stars but since the food was INCREDIBLE, you get a hire score. Reasons Why I Would Have Given Them A Lower Score... -It took about 30-45 minutes for our rolls to be done, (there was only 6 rolls ordered). It was WAY too long of a wait for sushi rolls! -I have said this before but if I have to ask you two different times to refill my drink or if you just don't come back to refill my drink, it kinda angers me and you wouldn't like me when I am angry! Reasons Why I Ended Up Giving Them A Higher Score... -THE FOOD! Enough Said! The food was INCREDIBLE! I had the Seared Ahi Salad and this alone was a very delicious meal! But I also ended up getting the Dynamite Roll and it was perfect! With Dynamite sauce, rolls tend to get soggy and this roll kept it's form! Well, until it hit my mouth- EXPLOSION! -The atmosphere was JUST MY STYLE! So, much that there was a photo that I have in my room hanging on the wall! TOO FUNNY! If you live in the area, you have yourself a gem of a sushi place. i wouldn't drive down here on a daily basis but for sure if I am in the area, i would suggest going here!

I'm so glad that my sister took me here, because this is one of my top favorite restaurants. Don't be fooled by the look of this place. At first, I had a tough time finding the restaurant because it was tucked inside the corner of a plaza. From the outside, the cafe looks like a hole in the wall, but once inside, you'll quickly feel welcomed by their friendly staff and exotic atmosphere . I have not tried their sushi yet, so I cannot comment on that. But I do think their best dish is the teriyaki chicken pasta! You HAVE to get their gargantuan smoothies if you're there, they're all as equally good. The food is on the expensive side, but I love them that much to come back again and again!

Ono's Cafe has really good lunch specials and the happy hour is also relatively cheap. I highly recommend the katsu chicken. They also have really good gyoza. Teriyaki chicken wrap is a good item to order for an appetizer. I will have to come back more often to try different things on the menu.

I love Ono's! I've been coming here for years...well at least 5! They never disappoint. I consider Ono's a hidden gem. The service is always good and the food quality and taste are really good. What I love is that the entrees look like they are prepared by a chef in a more upscale place like Roy's but you don't have to pay those prices. Good happy hour! AND I LOVE THE MALASADAS! Definitely a must visit!

Took my parents here to celebrate Mother's Day and they are both pretty picky eaters. The fact that they liked the food here says a lot and I would have to agree with them as well. The place isn't that big and we had to wait about 20 minutes around 630 PM. Great ambiance and quality of food that kind of reminds me of King's Hawaiian in the Los Angeles area. The fact that they also serve sushi here is a plus. I would have liked to see a bigger Entrees selection but it's all good. I'd definitely come back, especially to try the Happy Hour!

The service here was fun and friendly, but the food was OK at best... Not really authentic Hawai'ian OR Japanese. I think if I came for dinner, my experience might have been different, but I was here at 2 in the afternoon when it was pretty desolate... Wasn't "amazing" but I'm willing to give it another try!

Haven't had dinner with a couple friends so we decided to hit up somewhere local and Ono's was a hop and a skip away. We got here about 5ish and were seated right away. I think we were the only patrons at that time. We were seated in a booth. It also happened to be happy hour so we took advantage of the Chicken Keluguen and 50% off Basic Sushi Rolls. Our drinks were served this these awesome Bamboo looking tall mugs. I ordered the Strawberry Iced Tea (choice of Black and Green) which was so yummy. We also ordered entrees (dang fatties, huh? we were hungry!) I got the Teriyaki Chicken Pasta which was a huge portion. Overall, the food was very delicious and filling. There was enough to take to lunch the next day. The service was very attentive. The decor was beautiful and not overdone. Price wise, a bit more than I wanted to pay for but worth it for all the food we were served. I'll definitely be coming here more often. :) Oh and we got the Malasadas to go. Yummy!

I LOVE the atmosphere at Ono's. I didn't know it existed cause it's kind of hidden in the corner of the plaza. Happy Hour 4PM-7PM. Basic Rolls half off along with some other things. Chicken Kelaguen was mediocre but good enough to eat, beef tastes better imo ($5 for Happy Hour). $3 Futomaki (First sushi I've tried with lettuce in it not bad at all). 5 FATTY Pieces. My bestfriend got the Teriyaki Chicken Pasta (YUM, but it costs $14). The Apple Green Tea w/ Boba (it comes in a big mug! but no free re-fills) was pretty good if you're not super picky, basically tasted like the Arizona apple green tea just added ice and tapioca balls. Service wasn't bad at all. Full and satisfied. Recommended. Price: $$ Unless you go during Happy Hour. Anyways, the only thing I wasn't a huge fan of was the Miso soup. It tasted watered down and the miso paste wasn't mixed in well, it seemed like it was more of an egg mixture and it was hardly heated. I found the menu online for future references and if you're super hungry you can be ready to order on the spot: menuclub.com/californiar… So I came here for a second time! Very Satisfied! The wait was just long for two basic rolls. I had the pizza roll (Thank the lord for happy hour!) and the waitress suggested to replace the salmon with shrimp tempura, it was a very good suggestion :) it tasted yummy! So, this place is the new joint to go to! UPDATE: Let's just say Ono's is something me and the friends ALWAYS crave now, and I highly recommend their shakes! SOOO YUMMY, I've tried their Tsunami (White chocolate, banana, and granola!) and Strawberry Colada so far, worth your money, and you can have boba if you'd like with it

I was taken here on a date. A date that I was not particularly excited for. Why did I go you ask? Well, I like to give everyone a second chance. Either way... I ended up getting what I thought was simply breaded salmon. I discovered that it was fried as well. I then discovered that I never want to eat fried salmon again. The raspberry vinaigrette dressing that came with the salad was a tad too plentiful as well. Perhaps I made some bad food choices that night, or perhaps this place just doesn't do it for me. I also had to watch the Lakers lose that night as we were sat just beneath one of their TVs. Not terribly impressed with any aspect of this experience.

Ono's Cafe meets asian, sushi, hawaiian style fusion to the core! I cannot believe I haven't reviewed this place as my family and I have been going to this restaurant for quite some time now. Located in a nice neighborhood and tiny strip mall, Ono's is the jewel of Bonita and even more so another south bay fave! I give this place a 5 because of the following: 1. Creative and delicious entree and sushi menu (plating is exquisite as the taste of the food tantalizes your taste bud) --- I recommend their "Onolicious" roll 2. Ambience and atmosphere is very relaxing (gorgeous fish tank, island style decor without the tacky leis and typical hawaiian t-shirt style print) 3. Price is very reasonable for the quality of the food! 4. Variety of hot and cold teas as well as dessert menu. (You might not need dessert because the entrees are relatively large in portions). Never say "No" to Ono's!!! :-)

went for dinner on a friday night ( we have groupon) first time there, wait was super long, we ordered 4 rolls , 3 rolls came altogether but not the Ono's roll, our waiter said it will be out shortly, we finished all 3 rolls and the 4th one was still yet to be served, the waiter told us 4 times it will just couple more minutes, when he finally confessed that the roll we are waiting was accidentally dropped because someone walked in to the guy holding the roll while he was walking out of the kitchen, lame excuse we think, we guessed he forgot to put in the order and when we got it it was really not that good , i can only guessed they rushed making it. Overall, not too impress with this place, not a place we would go back to. Sushi were okay but not something we would crave and go back to.

I went here with my boyfriend yesterday just to try something new. We were a bit confused when we entered because we couldn't figure out what type of restaurant it was until we asked the waitress. The place itself is beautiful but there is no privacy. We were seated next to the aquarium which is nice but we were facing another couple the whole time which was not cute. The Lakers game was on and it would have been better if there was actually sound. We chose spicy crab that wasn't spicy at all. The caterpillar roll was decent and the Island Princess and avocado smoothies weren't that great. The price was a lot cheaper since we came at happy hour though. So here the break down. Pro: The ambiance is really nice Service was spot on Half off sushi Con: Sushi was decent but not amazing No privacy Overall we enjoyed our time and we will probably come back and try some of the ribs

This place has very good specialty sushi rolls. The only problem is that it can be overpriced for the amount you get. Drinks are excellent though. Range from Soju, hot tea (which I highly recommend) and standard sodas etc. I wouldn't mind coming back and dishing out a few couple dollars just for the service of the waiters and the atmosphere were great plus.

This place has really, really good food and drinks .... But the service is awful ! Went in today, starving & no one bothered to bring us waters or utensils.... After 8 excruciating minutes we got up and left to go take our hunger elsewhere. We really hope they step up their service.

Pretty tasty sushi. The happy hour menu is nothing special if you just want to fill up on the standard rolls. Gotta order the sake bomb though. They also have a good selection of drinks and hawaiian style entrees. Service is great!

This place is awesome. I first went to Ono's a few years ago, before the remodel. I found out about them through an ad that I was placing in a publication. I bought a wrap and the ahi poke for lunch with a smoothie. The poke was good and fresh, and the wrap was good, but the spinach flat bread itself kind of fell apart. I also ordered a bag of malasadas for the fam at home. I had one in the car on the drive back and fell in love with 'em. The second time around I brought my girlfriend (now my fiance). She ordered the Teriyaki Chicken pasta and I ordered the Seafood Dynamite. Both dishes were great. The Teri Chicken pasta had this nice creamy sauce laced with teriyaki flavoring. The addition of mushrooms made it even awesomer. That's right, I said AWESOMER! The Dynamite, I can't really say much about it other than that it's one of my favorite dishes in all of San Diego. You get salmon, chunk crab meat, flying fish roe and delicious sweet sauces on a bed of fluffy white rice, and sides of a ramen pasta-type salad and a shredded kim-chi salad. The service was good, and the waitresses are very friendly. The teas and smoothies are great. Occasionally the chef will come out and ask people how their food is, which is a nice personable touch. My only gripe is the seating against the windows. It's a little awkward feeling because if you sit with your back against the cushion, you're about a foot and a half away from the table. But that can be easily remedied by you not sitting there. I wanna go back during happy hour, half priced sushi rolls, beer, and musubi!!

I've been coming to Ono's since they opened and I feel the food and selection is good here. I've never been disappointed with either the food or service. This particualr time I was with a group and everyone's food was good except I thougtht mine was a pricey because the dish was so small. I would have given a higher rating but had an issue with billing on my credit card. The issue was eventually resolved to my satisfaction but not without a lot of hassle on my part. I feel that the employees and maybe even the owner\manager need to have a procedure in place to handle customer issues instead of ducking them. Whenever I called to speak with the manager I was informed that he wasn't in and I should call back the following day at a certain time. So I call back and was given the same run around. After a few days of this I drove back to the cafe. My issue was resolved when I spoke with the owner\manager and he gave me a gift certificate (with a generous amount) for my troubles. The owner is a young guy and maybe not up to dealing with customer issues but I let him know that he NEEDS to address this issue along with his staff. During this fiasco I was pretty down on Ono's but have softened my stance and am willing to give them another chance. This was never an issue about the food or service relating directly to my eating experience but the handling of my credit card issue.

I like this place. I love the decor and I like how we have something like this in the Chula Vista area. I also like that they're local-owned, I always support these types of places. I've been there a handful of times and from what I remember I've tried their malasadas (never tried any from Hawaii so I don't know how authentic tasting they are), smoked salmon wrap (really tasty and good portion) and their drinks. I know the mango or passion green or black iced tea are craveable. Their milk teas and advocado shakes weren't the best though. Last time I ordered a milk tea and the boba was hard and tasted old. Just try the fresh teas and leave out the boba. Try the place if you live in the area.

Happy Hour was not that great. The rolls were bit under average (fell apart, small portion), the service could have been much better (no napkins, utencils, water, took twice as long as it should). The part that got me was their lack of drink specials for a Wednesday (half off bottled wine, saki bombs). I was outside and cold and they didn't have anyone to light the lamps. I was let down a bit, but they did allow me to bring my dogs which made the pain almost bareable. Sorry Guys, but it was a bad experience. :( Oh.........when you get the edamame make sure you tell them for the regular edamame and not the edamame soup. I had to suck on my fingers to clean them after every pod.....annoying! Just throw some garlic on them and send them out. Ditch the broth laden edamame!

Sliders and Molokai salad is my one at this joint. Haven't yet explored the menu to its fullest, but the decor and jams set the tone. Love the fact that they play my type of playlist..Island style vibes and I here they do it big on Wednesdays. A few more visits on Wednesdays and several orders later will give it two more stars, then its a wrap. Cheeyhoo!

malasadas = zeppoles = total deliciousness!!! The rating is really for the malasadas. They are as everyone yelped, not to be missed, even if you're full. These remind me of the zeppoles that I used to get as a kid at the San Gennaro feast in NYC, except these have regular sugar or cinnamon, instead of powdered sugar. Of course, since I was already full from lunch, I had to bring the rest home. My method for reheating later that evening (couldn't let them sit there overnight) was a short microwave followed by a short time in the toaster oven, and added powdered sugar, of course, and it was still fantastic. Pricing is a bit high, so went for lunch and the bento $8. Not large servings, but everything tasted very good. Had the grilled tilapia and california roll, came with rice, small salad, and pickled cucumbers. Probably would not fill someone with a more normal appetite, but was fine for me. Friend had the kalbi ribs, and futomaki roll. Good amount of ribs (not large but enough for smaller appetites), but doesn't futomaki usually have egg in it (this didn't). Need to find one of those clipper coupons that some folks have mentioned and go again for dinner. YUM! Restaurant is nice, the space is actually split in two sections, the left side has the smaller tables and the fish tank, and the right side has about 4 booths, but the last booth is a straight path to the rest rooms (so not for those who don't like to be near the bath rooms). Enjoy!

Went to Ono's for the first time last Friday, and LOVED it! I live close by and kept driving by the place; and wondered about it. Let me just say that the sushi was delicious. We had the Crunchy roll and the Jalapeño Lava roll. The chipotle sauce on the Jalapeño roll was yummy. It had enough spice, to give it that extra kick. The waiter was very nice and helpful. As other reviews, yes, it was a little bit slow getting our order, but it wasn't that bad. It was well worth the wait. This place is a MUST go back.

  • Fred P.

This place is pretty good. The food is outstanding and the Happy hour specials are worth looking at. A little pricey for how much food you get, but what you do get is pretty tasty. However, they are pretty understaffed and the little staff they have serving the customers are pretty unskilled. Last time we were there, we had to wait a long time for just our drinks and then, the food. Could understand if the place was full, but it wasn't. I would still go back though, just to enjoy the specials.

You have to have the Zenga...best desert ever! Put in the order early though because it takes awhile. I love ONOs...only soft spot is the service. It's up and down. But the Teriyaki wrap is delicious as is most of the entrees.

Not really a cafe Not really a sushi bar It has a nice feel. Food is not authentic anything.. There seemed to be some Korean some Sushi and some of it was great The staff really let the experience down... With such a small restaurant you expect a little more personal experience They have such nice decor and then they have sticky old tables and paper napkins which resemble a 1970s style cheap ass dinner.. I would expect this to be good for lunch or weeknights when there is nobody there..

Ono's should be called "OH NO" The food was horrible. We just came back from a trip to Hawaii and wanted to continue the party. I get it that they are trying to play on the Hawaiian food stereotype with Spam sushi, but come one. Gross, why would you do that. After eating here, I was saying "OH NO NEVER AGAIN."

A big fan of the Teriyaki Chicken plate! Always fresh, always delicious and very consistent. The spicy kimchi salad is probably my favorite salad of all time! Have great Thai tea, and Almond green tea! Great place to come with the family or friends. They do have limited seating so when it's busy there can be a wait unless you don't mind sitting outside!

I'm a huge fan of Ono's happy hour which starts at 4pm every weeknight. The yellow tail rolls are half price and only $3.50. Best yellow tail deal in town. Other sushi rolls such as spicy tuna, eel, salmon are also well priced. For dessert try the malasadas which and mini donuts coated in sugar and cinnamon. Yummy!

I have made a personal vow never to come here ever again. The last time I made an attempt to have a meal here, it took 20 minutes to get a glass of water. No one took our order for over 35 minutes. I don't even want to know how long it would have taken to get our food after that. My family and I are nice people and never have we once stood up and walked out of a restaurant.. But that's what happened. Perhaps if the staff was more experienced and not high school students it may have been another story. Not even an apologetic glance our way! Sure the ambiance is nice but be prepared to wait a considerable amount of time for your food. I've eaten here a handful of times and the food is not memorable to me which says a lot. Now this place is just a distant memory to me, much like a bad dream I would not like to experience again. Sorry. Not sorry.

I have been coming to this place for years and I really like the food. I haven't even checked what other people on here have said but I am surprised its not at least 4 stars. My favorite dishes are the Molokai salad and the fried bread desert thingies.

THURSDAY IS THE NIGHT TO GO! This is the closest thing to Sushi Deli we have in the south bay.. so unless I want to drive for twenty minutes I'll come here.. but only on Thursday nights.. They have decent sushi just like sushi deli and a matching drink special (but only on Thursdays.. did I mention Thursdays?)... They even have a late night Happy Hour as well.. Good spot to check out if you want sushi and drink specials.. but only on Thursday! Seriously THURSDAY!

Got there just after 5 on a friday eve hoping to take advantage of their happy hour specials.. half off basic sushi rolls and drink specials? i was all for it, especially because i'm a homesick girl from hawaii and the name itself reminds me of home.. i posted a coupla pics. and after ordering 3 different sushi's, the shrimp ceviche and the chicken eggrolls, an onotini (lychee) and a sapporo later, i was still hungry! the thing that killed any chance of giving Ono's any ray of hope in my eyes was the fact that it was sucha small little place, and soon as we got there, there were people coming in consistantly. majority of whom had kids and babies. not my crowd for a happy hour mood....... and i promise, i tried. but kids seated in such close proximity, are hard to just ignore. i'm not a baby-hater either, there were jus so many. we ate our last eggroll and headed outta there. straight to McD's nearby (yeah, seriously!) because i was still hungry!!! i suppose if we went and ordered appetizers and entrees, i mighta woulda been satiated, but you cant tell me the crowd woulda been any better. seriously. i cant stand that cluster-f*ck feelin especially with crying babies and whiny kids. sorry. woulda been jus one star if the waiter wasnt cool... thanks tim.

The theme is good and the ambiance is great but the service is slow and the food is a lil pricy and skimpy. Nothing special about the food in this place. It's better for its desserts and lil things. Don't expect to be satisfied.

The ahi salad is amazing! I really like that Ono's offers unique entrées(not just your typical teriyaki chicken or a noodle dish) as well as a variety of delicious sushi rolls. The servers are always friendly and in a great mood, even when ordering to go!

I've been here a few times both with my hubby and also with my granddaughter. Service has always been good to excellent. Love their seaweed salad and the seared ahi salad. The sushi rolls are big and tasty. Don't like the edamame swimming in sessami oil though. Yesterday afternoon my hubby & I had finished our meal and saw another table being served an interesting dessert, so we asked for it too. It's called Zenga with carameled bananas, cheesecake filled turnovers, and vanilla ice cream -- great dessert to share! .. and if you check in on yelp, desserts are 50% off.

This place has the best sushi, hands down! There are so many different kinds with a lot of exotic flavor. My family's favorite sushi is "the big easy" and "creme de la creme" The way they present the food is also nice, you can tell they put a lot of work into it. The servers are all very helpful and attentive, especially Miguel who always checked on us and made sure we had everything we need, giving us refills without us having to ask. When my family craves sushi this is the first place we think of! Definitely recommend it. They also have a really good happy hour menu!

We first found Ono's last Jan. while visiting SD. Ate there several times then and we were always pleased. I am happy to say it is as good now as it was then. We like the lunch specials for taste and value and the happy hour menu is quite good. We are somewhat puzzled by some negative reviews as they do not reflect our experience at all. We look forward to our return in Dec.

Hubby wanted a late night snack and we left with full bellies and leftovers for tomorrow! Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because my Pacific Protein Roll didn't want to stay together, it kept falling apart because it was so jam-packed with yummy goodness! Not that I'm complaining . Miguel was our server, he was cool. He even said that we could fill our malasadas with chocolate filling, yum!!

Slooooooow!!! Hire more people please. I usually go for lunch and I usually get helped right away. I went for dinner on a Saturday night. What the hell was with all the waiters that night??? You guys had attitudes like you wanted us to hurry and get out. Wasn't pleasant at all. We got seated and after 15-20 mins, not even a menu or waters. Wth. We had to ask for it. Food was alright. Nothing to die for. Next time I'm going somewhere else.

I came across this place through my girlfriend and I enjoyed the food, service, and overall experience while eating at this restaurant. The happy hour menu is really good, along with the lunch specials they ususally have some pretty good deals. The food was good and I highly recommend coming here. Get the bulgogi fries! Also, this place supports Mogl!

DO NOT GO HERE IF YOUR GLUTEN FREE! I specifically called ahead to make sure they offer gluten free soy sauce for the sushi rolls. When I got there I asked the staff about 50 questions and told them I have celiac disease (there was no one else in the entire place so I know she wasn't to busy) after specifying what I could and couldn't have I ordered food feeling pretty confident. The waitress proceeded to serve me soy beans covered in regular soy sauce (which just so happens to be practically deadly for me) I wish that they educated there staff a little more about food allergies and there importance. If the had I might not have to spend the next 48 hours with stomach flu symptoms :(

Never again am I coming here. Food had no flavor. Felt sick after I ate it. Not to mention its way to expensive for their portions. Ordered a salmon wrap which might as well should of been a lettuce wrap since there was almost no salmon. Gross

I accidental came across Ono's by being random on Yelp an simply hungry looking for food, saw that this was a sushi spot and decided to check it out. Since then, my boyfriend and I have been coming here! I really enjoy their sushi presentation, the decor of the inside and outside of Ono, not to mention they have spectacular waiters and waitresses! Their smiles are welcoming and they're attentive! My favorite rolls from here is the Crunchy and the Onolicious, it's to die for and I am so serious, make sure you add some spicy mayo too. The Gyoza is really good too! I definitely recommend this place to my friends and after eating sushi from here I really wouldn't want to go to Osaka or Chibas unless I'm in that side if town (west, east)

Great service. Reasonable prices and awesome sushi. Other than their sushi all the items on the menu are worth the try. Easily my go to sushi for both a quick fix or sit down meal with friends or family. The whole staff is friendly and outstanding.

Oh no! Ono's didn't blow my mind. Based on the 3 rolls I tried yesterday I thought Ono's was just so-so. I love saying the name of the place though, as you can probably tell. My go-to default order at any sushi place is the rainbow roll. It was good but I thought the fish was too warm and the avocado was SO skimpy :(.I also tried the Hana Hou which was my least favorite. It had smoked salmon in the inside and dynamite sauce and mushrooms on the outside. Smoked salmon and mushrooms are two things I love so I had high hopes but alas, the mushrooms were too sour and the dynamite sauce too rich and overwhelming. I ended up scraping off the excess sauce and the mushrooms. The boyfriend ordered much better. His Maui Wowie was delicious and my favorite of the meal. Inside was just your basic California roll and outside was this yummy spicy concoction of salmon and scallops. Really tasty! Service was excellent! I really liked our waiter and when his son came into the restaurant I darn near melted - he was adorable! Four rolls and a beer came out to about $45.

Ive been coming here since it first opened. Not only have they expanded the menu but the actual restaurant. I would recommend the salmon wrap with the calamari as an appetizer. And of course you can't go wrong with the malasadas (mix of cinnamon and sugar) for dessert! They are a must have! The sushi is a little pricy so I would recommend to get the lunch specials.

This place was awesome. I went on a Friday night with some friends and took a seat outside. The service was prompt and very polite. I won't hold it against them but a little more attention to detail would have helped. We didn't get our initial round of water and my teriyaki beef sliders was misordered as beef teriyaki (with rice). All good, they let us keep the non burger for free. The servings were plentiful and everything came out perfect: pork, chicken and beef were juicy and had a lot of flavor. Little details like the breading on the calamari, the presentation and topping on the volcano roll shows how much effort they put into the food. Looking forward to coming back soon can re-rate this place with 5 stars!

Hot Malasadas which you could get with sugar or cinnamon. I have eaten here numerous times and it is a favorite for family events. Panko crusted salmon with Thai rice and the edamame is fantastic (4 stars). The Molokai salad is amazing. The service is OK and they offer a variety of boba drinks and teas. Excellent for kids with the huge fish tank in the corner and outdoor seating. I have used them for catering my daughter's birthday and I recommend you get the chicken pasta which everyone loved.

Ate here at happy hour. Super good deal if you can make it there during the time. Waiter was cool and kept checking up on us. Calamari was really good and fresh. The 50% off section was kind of small but we had the caterpillar roll was good. Parking lot got packed really fast right after we got there so parking could be an issue in the small lot.

I came here with a friend one late afternoon cause we were craving a snack. I had never been here before, however I was pretty pleased with the happy hour menu options and the dessert that we had. We shared bulgogi fries which was pretty much a plate of fries topped with bulgogi meat, kimchi, and some other basic toppings you would find on carne asada fries. It was actually pretty good...the kimchi really did add a lot to the dish and made it seem more asian-inspired. The happy hour menu was decently priced...my friend and I shared that plate and it only cost $5! There were even a few fries left over that we couldn't finish- I definitely recommend this item. We also ate this dessert called the zenga...I liked it! It was sort of like a cannoli with cream cheese inside and garnished with some glazed bananas. I really liked it, however the cream cheese got to me after a few bites. I think it was just super strong due to filling being a tad under-sweetened, but aside from that it was a yummy treat. We had good service. There was a server that came by to check on our water and was understanding after we asked twice for a couple more minutes to review the menu. During the meal, a couple of people came by to see how we were doing. I appreciated the effort to make us feel welcome during our time there. Overall, I would give the place 4.5/5 stars. The ambience was actually very nice and the booth seats were comfy. But I just wish the restaurant was a bit bigger. We went during an hour where their weren't too many guests however I can totally see myself feeling claustrophobic during peak time. Also, the items on the regular menu seemed kind of expensive. I'll be sure to make sure I go during happy hour for some better deals!

I love their apple green tea. The ahi salad is awesome too. That said I am disappointed that there staff is CRAP! I once walked out after having waited 30 minutes at a table without one person asking if we wanted water. at about 20 minutes I complained and was told we were not her table. So instead of getting frequent business they only get me walking in for tea once in a blue moon.

Excellent sushi as well as a variety of other delicious menu items; something for everyone! This is our go-to place for special occasions. Ono's has the quality, creativity and variety PLUS the ambiance! The service has always been good for us as well. My whole family loves this place.

My husband and I love this place. Its fun, fresh, and delicious. Everything is tasty from the menu including the drinks. My favorite drink is the green almond milk tea including the pearls. Best appetite is the calamari with the tingy sauce. All the sushi rolls are unquie and yummy! My only con from this place is that the sushi isn't spicy enough. I love spicy foods. That's why they get only four stars than five.
